Three species of Holorchis are redescribed from marine fishes from off Corsica. They are: Holorchis pycnoporus from Diplodus vulgaris, D. sargus, Lithognathus mormyrus, Pagellus erythrinus, Sparus pagrus and Symphodus roissali; H. micracanthum from Sparus pagrus and Pagellus erythrinus; and H. legendrei from Mullus surmuletus. The characteristics differentiating these species are discussed, in particular those separating H. pycnoporus and H. legendrei, species which previously have been considered synonyms. The internal morphology of the cirrus-sac differs distinctly between these forms, which also have microhabitat and host differences.

The following lepocreadiid species are described from Cheilodactylidae from south-western Australia. Cliveus peroni n. g., n. sp. from Nemadactylus valenciennesi is characterised by its attenuated forebody and C. acaenodera n. sp. from Dactylophora nigricans by its attenuated forebody, the pattern of forebody spination and the large cirrus-sac. Jericho chojeri n. g., n. sp. from N. valenciennesi has a large infundibuliform oral sucker and paired ani. Rugocavum n. g. is distinguished by the possession of a blind, wrinkled glandular pit on the postero-ventral surface of the forebody. R. nemadactyli n. sp. from N. valenciennesi has its vitelline field restricted to the hindbody, whereas in R. morwong n. sp. from N. valenciennesi the vitelline field reaches into the forebody. Paraneocreadium australiense Kruse, 1978 from N. valenciennesi is redescribed and its coiled internal seminal vesicle and lobed gonads are considered distinctive features. Scaphatrema nemadactyli (Kurochkin & Korotaeva, 1972) n. g., n. comb. from N. valenciennesi has a wrinkled, boat-shaped body, a Lepidapedon-like cirrus-sac and multiple testes; it was originally placed in the genus Multitestis, but these characters suggest that a new genus should be erected for it within the subfamily Lepidapedinae.

The species Helicometra boseli Nagaty, 1956 is redescribed from the holocentrid Sargocentron spiniferum (Forsskål) off New Caledonia. It is characterised by a short forebody, long cirrus-sac, reaching well into the hindbody, and undulating lateral margins. Stenopera rectisaccus Fischthal & Kuntz, 1964 is considered a synonym. The status of the four species of Helicometra Odhner, 1902 from holocentrids is discussed. Three of the Helicometra species reported from holocentrids exhibit characteristics used to erect the genus Stenopera Manter, 1933, which is currently considered a junior synonym of Helicometra.

B6C3F1 mice from a hybrid production colony frequently were serologically positive by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and consistently negative by culture forMycoplasma pulmonis. Subsequently, 162 mice were obtained and intensively studied using an expanded group of cultural procedures, ELISA, and histopathology. Lesions attributable to mycoplasma infection were not found, butMycoplasma arthritidis was isolated from 20 mice. TheM. pulmonis ELISA was positive (IgM, IgG, or both) in 113 mice. Selected sera were tested simultaneously in both theM. pulmonis ELISA and in an ELISA usingM. arthritidis antigen, and were found to be positive in both the IgM and IgG classes in both ELISAs. Thus, cross-reacting antibody was produced in mice naturally infected withM. arthritidis, confirming previous observations based on experimental infections. To our knowledge, this is the first report of naturalM. arthritidis infection in laboratory mice.

InCallithrix, Saguinus, Aotus, andCallicebus other group members than the mother participate in infant care. Differences among these species are obvious in respect to the time of being off any caregiver, and in respect to the carrying position (Aotus andCallicebus). Alloparental care, a basic behaviour pattern in these species, has evolved from the parking behaviour of the prosimians. The infants are «parked» at other group members.

The genera Pycnadenoides Yamaguti, 1938 and Pseudopycnadena Saad-Fares & Maillard, 1986 are redefined and their validity discussed. Two forms, currently considered to be Pycnadenoides senegalensis Fischthal & Thomas, 1972, one from Lithognathus mormyrus and Diplodus vulgaris off Corsica (Scandola) and one from Sparus aurata off Provence and Languedoc, are described separately, as some preliminary biochemical studies suggest that they might be distinct. This species is commented upon in relation to Distomum mormyri Stossich, 1885, D. umbrinae Stossich, 1885, Pycnadenoides pagrosomi Yamaguti, 1938 and P. ghanensis Fischthal & Thomas, 1968. Pseudopycnadena fischthali Saad-Fares & Maillard, 1986 is redescribed from Diplodus vulgaris, D. annularis and D. sargus off Corsica (Scandola).

A nonmetric trait, known as the supra-acetabular fossa and groove, is described for European Upper Paleolithic and mesolithic populations. This morphological feature consists of a pit posterior or superior to the anterior-inferior iliac spine and an associated groove which arcs over the roof of the acetabulum. Presence of the trait seems to be primarily related to the origin of the reflected head of rectus femoris. The trait is variable in its expression, shows an increase in definition with age, and occurs equally in males and females. Although the trait is commonly found in pre-Upper Paleolithic hominids, it is extremely rare in the Upper Paleolithic, limited to a single occurrence in the Oberkassel 2 female. In the Mesolithic, except for two innominates from Vlasac (Yugoslavia), the trait is found only in NW European populations, especially Skateholm (Sweden) and Henriksholm-Bøgebakken (Denmark) where it occurs in more than 50% of the known pelves. Given the trait’s restricted geographic distribution and high occurrence in Skateholm and Henriksholm-Bøgebakken, it is suggested the supra-acetabular fossa and groove represents a skeletal marker for NW European Mesolithic populations. As such, it provides evidence for the development of social territories in the early Holocene.

Early biological control attempts ofDiatraea saccharalis in Barbados had failed. Subsequent intensive release campaigns of several parasite species from the Neotropics. Africa and India resulted in the temporary establishment ofMetagonistylum minense andTrichogramma japonicum and the permanent establishment ofLixophaga diatraeae andApanteles flavipes. The latter built up an extraordinarily high population level within a short period of time. From damage assessments it is evident that due to high parasitism crop damage was reduced considerably. The joint borer infestation which fluctuated around 15% until 1966 decreased to less than 6% in 1970.

Hybrids ofApanteles melanoscelus (Ratzeburg) were produced from colonies originating from France, Yugoslavia, and Connecticut. All strains, as well as freshly collected “wild” Connecticut parasitoids of the same species were evaluated in the laboratory for developmental rate, host attack rate, and sex ratios. Development was significantly slower in all the laboratory strains compared to the progeny of forest collected Connecticut females. Progeny production was greater (almost 2X) for the “wild” females and the French-Yugoslavian-Connecticut hybrid than for the laboratory Connecticut strain. The proportion of females collected from the “wild” (Connecticut) strain was higher than that observed in any laboratory strain. A field test was conducted using the triple hybrid in 3 release plots with ca. 6000A. melanoscelus cocoons released per plot in central Connecticut, U.S.A. Weekly collections of gypsy moth larvae showed that the % parasitism was significantly higher in release plots than in the 3 check plots. These results suggest the value of inundative releases ofA. melanoscelus for reduction of sparse gypsy moth populations, but they did not show that hybridization of these strains produced a more effective parasitoid under forest conditions.

The diamond-back moth,Plutella xylostella (L.) is a major pest of cruciferous crops in Trinidad, West Indies. Pesticides are applied as a control measure but it is now resistant to several of them. Indigenous parasitesApanteles aciculatus (Ashm.),Apanteles sp. (glomeratus group),Spilochalcis hirtifemora (Ashm.) andTrichogramma brasiliensis (Ashm.) are unable to exert economic control.Apanteles plutellae (Kurdj.) andTetrastichus sokolowskii Kurdj. were introduced and are now well established. It is recommended to introduce additional parasitesMacromalon sp. andThyraeella collaris (Grav.) in order to obtain complete biological control.

Chromolaena odorata L. is a major weed of tropical plantations and pasture lands.Pareuchaetes pseudoinsulata Rego Barros [Lep.: Arctiidae] was mass-reared and released to control the weed on the Mariana Islands of Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan in the western Pacific. One year following establishment ofP. pseudoinsulata on Guam, the weed was reduced 100% at 3 of 4 sites monitored with fixed quadrats. Seed production was prevented if defoliation occurred prior to the beginning of the flowering season. If defoliation occurred shortly after flowering began, the developing seeds were eaten byP. pseudoinsulata or there was a significant reduction in weight and germination of seeds that matured. Eighteen months after establishing on Guam,P. pseudoinsulata had defoliated approximately 25,000 hectares of the weed. This is the 1st report on the quantitative impact of any control agent forC. odorata, and though the long term effect of the insect is still unknown, these results are encouraging.
