Relationships amongCalamagrostis longiseta var.longiseta, C.l. var.longe-aristata andC. fauriei, which are principally at the 2n=28 chromosome level, were studied mainly on the basis of population samples. The populations comprised (1) “pure” populations of each ofC.l. longiseta, C.l. longe-aristata andC. fauriei and (2) populations showing a gradation fromC.l. longiseta toC. fauriei via the intermediateC.l. longearistata and fromC.l. longiseta toC.l. longe-aristata. Hybridization betweenC.l. longiseta andC. fauriei was estimated to be ultimately related to the geneses of the population structures detected, and it was concluded thatC.l. longe-aristata must be of hybrid origin betweenC.l. longiseta andC. fauriei. Populations showing a gradation fromC.l. longiseta toC.l. longe-aristata were regarded to have been brought about by the extinction ofC. fauriei from the hybridizing population coupled with the change of environments and also by the secondary contact betweenC.l. longiseta and plants ofC.l. longe-aristata migrating from the area that produced it. No significant reduction of pollen fertility and seed productivity was found inC.l. longe-aristata. Based on the results of population analyses, the delimitation of the taxa concerned was made clearer. The examination of herbarium specimens showed that the range ofC.l. longe-aristata considerably exceeds the overlapping area of the present ranges ofC.l. longiseta andC. fauriei. The three taxa were deviated ecologically, and “pure” populations ofC.l. longe-aristata were found on several damp subalpine fields in central and northern Honshu that seemed to represent the most suitable niche for this taxon. It was estimated thatC.l. longe-aristata would evolve into a new good species if the future organism-environment interactions are favorable for it.  相似文献

Centaurea phrygia agg. was studied in part of Central Europe (Czech Republic, Slovakia and Ukraine) to evaluate its karyological and morphological variation. Three ploidy levels were found: diploid (C. pseudophrygia, C. stenolepis and several populations ofC. phrygia s.str.), tetraploid (C. oxylepis and several populations ofC. phrygia s.str.), and triploid (very rare, only single individuals). Only one taxon,C. phrygia s.str., comprises populations of two ploidy levels, but they seem to be geographically separated. Multivariate morphometric analysis confirmed the separation of the four taxa; the length and the width of appendages of middle involucral bracts, visibility of appendages of inner involucral bracts, the length and the width of an involucre, and the length/width ratio of middle cauline leaves are the most important discriminant characters. Several populations intermediate between two species (eitherC. pseudophrygia andC. stenolepis orC. oxylepis andC. phrygia s.str.) were found. Their possible origin from introgressive hybridization is discussed considering their morphology (intermediate between putative parental species), chromosome numbers (always the same as in putative parents), and distribution (both spatially and ecologically more or less intermediate between distribution ranges of putative parents). A determination key for the four studied species, including intermediates, is also presented.  相似文献

Foliage and bark samples were collected from the tree that provided the type specimen forJuniperus deppeana var.sperryi Correll, as well as from trees from populations ofJ. pinchotii Sudw.,J. flacida Schl., andJ. deppeana Steud. var.deppeana. These four taxa were compared using terpenoid and morphological characters. The terpenoid data suggest thatJ. deppeana var.sperryi is most closely related toJ. deppeana var.deppeana; no evidence of relict or present hybridization withJ. flaccida was detected. The morphological data showedJ. deppeana var.sperryi to be intermediate in several characters betweenJ. deppeana var.deppeana andJ. flacdda. The probability of a hybrid origin for this taxon is discussed. Due to the scattered occurrence of trees referable toJ. deppeana var.sperryi, it is proposed that this taxon be reduced in rank toJ. deppeana formasperryi.  相似文献

An experimental crossing program was carried out in order to test the hypothesis thatArmeria villosa subsp.carratracensis, a serpentine endemic from Southern Spain, is of hybrid origin. Fruit-set and mainly pollen stainability data in artificial hybrids demonstrate that internal interspecific barriers are weak. Two generations of backcrossing with the two putative parents —A. colorata andA. villosa subsp.longiaristata— can restore pollen stainability to an average of 83.2 and 68.7, respectively. A morphometric analysis of 148 specimens belonging to parental species, different artificial hybrid generations and wild putative hybrid race shows that (1) morphological characters have a strong genetic basis and thus are good markers in identifying hybrids and introgression inArmeria; (2) artificial backcrossing produces in morphometrical characters a variation which conforms in both trend and magnitude to what is commonly attributed in the wild to introgression; (3) the position of the putative hybrid race is intermediate between the two parental species used in the program. These results are in accordance with the hypothesis of hybrid origin ofA. villosa subsp.carratracensis. Natural and experimental hybridization inArmeria, I  相似文献

Evolutionary theory and observation predict wider phenotypic variation in hybrids than parental species. Emergent phenotypic novelty in hybrids may in turn drive new adaptations or speciation by breaking parental phenotypic constraints. Primate hybridization is often documented through genetic evidence, but knowledge about the primate hybrid phenotype remains limited due to a small number of available studies on hybrid primate morphology. Here, we examine pelage and morphometric variation in two Brazilian marmoset species (Callithrix penicillata and C. geoffroyi) and their hybrids. Hybrids were sampled in an anthropogenic hybrid zone in the municipality of Viçosa, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. We analyzed hybrid facial and body pelage color variation, and compared 13 morphometric measures between hybrids and parental species. Five different hybrid facial morphotypes were observed, varying from intermediate to parental-like. Hybrid facial morphotypes were biased towards C. penicillata, suggesting that the pelage of this species may be dominant to that of C. geoffroyi in this context, and indicating that mate preference, and therefore gene flow/introgression, may be biased towards C. penicillata within the hybrid zone. Hybrid morphometric features were on average intermediate to parental species traits, but transgressive hybrids were also observed, suggesting that morphometric variation for the studied traits is consistent with Rieseberg’s complementary allele model. Finally, we observed a decoupling of facial patterning and size/shape in hybrids, relative to parent phenotypes, suggesting that an important factor driving phenotypic novelty within the Viçosa marmoset hybrid zone might be the loosening of evolutionary constraints on phenotypic trait integration.  相似文献

In a mixed population ofAndropogon glomeratus var.pumilus andA. longiberbis in Lake County, Florida, there were six individuals morphologically intermediate between and less fertile than these two taxa. In a discriminant analysis using two characters, spikelet length and raceme sheath width, the putative hybrid plants are significantly different from both parents (P<0.01). Reproductive isolation of these taxa in other mixed populations comes, at least in part, from a combination of nonsynchronous flowering and cleistogamy.  相似文献

Intermixed populations of Arabis holboellii Hornem. var. pendulocarpa (A. Nels.) Roll., A. williamsii Roll., and their putative hybrids; and of A. holboellii var. retrofracta (Grah.) Rydb., A. drummondii Gray and A. divaricarpa A. Nels., the latter also considered to be a probable hybrid taxon, were studied in the field in Montana and Wyoming. In spite of the “intermediacy” of the putative hybrids in both cases, hybrid swarms were not found. In each instance, the “intermediate” as well as the taxa regarded as parental were remarkably uniform. The existence of three relatively uniform morphotypes in each of the several populations is contrary to the usual situation involving hybridizing taxa. A possible explanation is that seed production, at least in the “intermediate” morphotype individuals, involves apomixis, thus circumventing the usual sexual process that would result in a hybrid swarm. Amphiploidy as a possible mechanism for producing A. divaricarpa as a stable hybrid was ruled out in one population where the chromosome number 2n = 14 was found in all three taxa present in the population. Arabis divaricarpa, widely distributed in northern North America, often occurs as a uniform morphotype where no other species of Arabis grows. If it is of hybrid origin, as the evidence suggests, a mechanism other than sexual reproduction must be present to keep up uniformity and at the same time perpetuate the taxon. It is suggested that facultative apomixis is involved in the reproductive process and that it controls the genetic variability that would otherwise be present by insuring maternal inheritance in each successive seed crop.  相似文献

Luzula campestris, L. pallidula and tetraploi plants of this section from Ireland were studied electrophoretically. A hypothesis of alloploid origin for the Irish tetraploids from a hybrid betweenL. campestris andL. pallidula, based on the morphology, and karyology of the relevant taxa, has been tested. The presumed parental taxa are divergent in several loci,L. pallidula being highly homozygous andL. campestris moderately heterozygous. The Irish tetraploid combines the alleles of the putative parents, has no unique alleles, and exhibits a high frequency of heterozygotes, inAdh-2 andGpi-1, with invariably additive patterns. The Irish tetraploid has a low genotype diversity. The allozyme data support the hypothesis of alloploid origin for the Irish tetraploid withL. campestris andL. pallidula as possible parents.  相似文献

Phlomisxmargaritae is a rare and sterile hybrid taxon foundin a single endangered population in southern Spain. It waspreviously described as a morphologically intermediate hybrid, putatively between Phlomis purpurea and P. composita. The presentstudy used allozymes as molecular markers to assess the hybrididentity ofP.xmargaritae . Ten putative loci from seven enzymesystems were resolved: five were monomorphic and fixed acrossall taxa studied and the rest (Aat-1, Aat-2, 6-Pgdh-2, Pgi andPgm) were polymorphic in at least one taxon. The two parentaltaxa are fixed for different alleles at 6-Pgdh-2 and show distinctallelic frequency differences for four other loci. Phlomisxmargaritaedisplays fixed heterozygous phenotypes for four of the fivepolymorphic loci, these being composed of combinations of thealleles found in the parental taxa. No unique alleles were detectedin P.xmargaritae. We conclude that this taxon is of hybrid originand confirm the identity of the parental taxa involved. It isfurther suggested that this population is composed of individualsthat are recent F1hybrids that have not undergone backcrossingor introgression. Global conservation measures are necessaryfor the whole hybrid system in this location since further continuousassessment could reveal the evolutionary input of hybridizationin Phlomis.Copyright 2000 Annals of Botany Company Endangered species, genetic diversity, isozyme variation, hybrid species, Phlomisxmargaritae, plant conservation, population genetics, Lamiaceae, Spain.  相似文献

Natural hybridization frequently promotes gene introgression among closely related species in sympatric populations, producing complex patterns of morphological variation. Therefore, a detailed understanding of the dynamics of interspecific gene flow and its morphological patterns is of widespread interest. We tested if introgressive hybridization promotes an increase in transgressive characters in comparison with the parental species. A sunflower species complex occurring in Mexico formed by two native invasive species, Tithonia tubaeformis and Tithonia rotundifolia, was analyzed using 46 morphological characters (leaf, flower and fruit) in five hybrid zones (N = 150 individuals) and two pure sites for each parental species (N = 80 individuals). In general, T. tubaeformis differed significantly from T. rotundifolia in all the examined characters, except six foliar and one inflorescence character. Morphological characters support the hypothesis of hybridization in this complex, even though both species remain morphological distinct in mixed stands. Individual hybrids appear to be a mosaic of parent-like (24.8 % of traits), intermediate (26.1 %) and transgressive (37.8 %) phenotypes (the remaining 11.3 % of the traits did not differ significantly from both parental species). Our results suggest that individuals from the same parental species were more similar among themselves than to putative hybrids, indicating occasional hybridization with segregation in hybrid types or backcrossing to parents. Evidence indicates a unidirectional pattern of gene flow toward T. rotundifolia.  相似文献

Examination of leaf flavonoids of all taxa ofCoreopsis sectionPalmatae revealed that most members synthesize an array of common flavone (mostly luteolin and apigenin) glycosides. Each diploid species or diploid member of a species is characterized by a particular ensemble of compounds. These taxa includeC. major, C. verticillata, C. pulchra, C. palmata, andC. tripteris. The latter species differs from all other taxa in producing flavonol (kaempferol and quercetin) glycosides and what appear to be 6-oxygenated compounds. Tetraploids ofC. verticillata exhibit the same flavonoids as diploid members of the species, thus flavonoid chemistry supports the hypothesis that they originated from diploids within the species. Certain populations of hexaploid and octoploidC. major are similar chemically to diploids, suggesting they also originated as intraspeciflc polyploids. Other populations of these polyploids exhibit a flavonoid profile which differs from the profile of the diploids, and this profile is nearly identical to the octoploidCoreopsis × delphinifolia. The latter taxon has been viewed by Smith (1976) and Mueller (1974) as an interspecific hybrid betweenC. verticillata andC. major and/orC. tripteris. Species-specific compounds from the former species occur inC. × delphinifolia but no compounds unique to either of the latter two species are discernable. Flavonoid chemistry is not useful in ascertaining whether either or both species have been involved withC. verticillata in producing plants referable toC. × delphinifolia. There is morphological intergradation between octoploidC. major andC. × delphinifolia, and all plants not appearing to be “pure”C. major exhibit a flavonoid chemistry likeC. × delphinifolia. All plants of sectionPalmatae considered to be alloploids (includingC. × delphinifolia) produce the same array of leaf flavonoids, including several “novel” compounds not expressed in the putative parental taxa. Two of the “novel” flavonoids are present in the geographically restricted diploidC. pulchra. The systematic and phylogentic significance of this is not readily apparent.  相似文献

Natural hybridization may result in the exchange of genetic material between divergent lineages and even the formation of new taxa. Many of the Neo-Darwinian architects argued that, particularly for animal clades, natural hybridization was maladaptive. Recent evidence, however, has falsified this hypothesis, instead indicating that this process may lead to increased biodiversity through the formation of new species. Although such cases of hybrid speciation have been described in plants, fish and insects, they are considered exceptionally rare in mammals. Here we present evidence for a marine mammal, Stenella clymene, arising through natural hybridization. We found phylogenetic discordance between mitochondrial and nuclear markers, which, coupled with a pattern of transgressive segregation seen in the morphometric variation of some characters, support a case of hybrid speciation. S. clymene is currently genetically differentiated from its putative parental species, Stenella coerueloalba and Stenella longisrostris, although low levels of introgressive hybridization may be occurring. Although non-reticulate forms of evolution, such as incomplete lineage sorting, could explain our genetic results, we consider that the genetic and morphological evidence taken together argue more convincingly towards a case of hybrid speciation. We anticipate that our study will bring attention to this important aspect of reticulate evolution in non-model mammal species. The study of speciation through hybridization is an excellent opportunity to understand the mechanisms leading to speciation in the context of gene flow.  相似文献

Phytogeographical, morphological, and molecular evidence for the widespread but sporadic occurrence of sterile hybrids betweenLeucaena leucocephala subsp.glabrata andL. esculenta subsp.esculenta in South-Central Mexico is presented. Most morphological and DNA characters studied in the putative hybrids showed states intermediate between the proposed parental taxa. The occurrence of non-additive nuclear ribosomal DNA phenotypes is discussed and the need to use a suite of nuclear taxon-specific markers to determine hybridity is emphasized. The origin of the hybrid is discussed in relation to the disruption of the distributions of both parental taxa through use by man as minor food plants, providing another example of the important influence of human interference on the evolution ofLeucaena. The successful use of dried leaf material as a source of DNA is highlighted as an efficient way to identify sterile hybrids at the molecular level.  相似文献

A karyological study of 15 taxa ofScorzonera L. from the Iberian Peninsula has been made. The chromosome numbers found inS. hispanica var.pinnatifida, S. baetica, S. reverchonii, S. angustifolia, S. laciniata var.calcitrapifolia and var.subulata (2n = 14) are new. Diploid cytotypes with 2n = 14 and 2n = 12 prevail, andS. hispanica var.crispatula is the only taxon which exhibits autopolyploidy (2n = 14, 28). x = 7 is considered to be the base chromosome number within the genus, with x = 6 being derived from it by translocation. This and detailed karyotype analyses allow to group the Iberian Peninsula species ofScorzonera into three groups.  相似文献

Nineteen Cymbopogon taxa belonging to 11 species, two varieties, one hybrid taxon and four unidentified species were analysed for their essential oil constituents and RAPD profiles to determine the extent of genetic similarity and thereby the phylogenetic relationships among them. Remarkable variation was observed in the essential oil yield ranging from 0.3% in Cymbopogon travancorensis Bor. to 1.2% in Cymbopogon martinii (Roxb.) Wats var. motia. Citral, a major essential oil constituent, was employed as the base marker for chemotypic clustering. Based on genetic analysis, elevation of Cymbopogon flexuosus var. microstachys (Hook. F.) Soenarko to species status and separate species status for C. travancorensis Bor., which has been merged under C. flexuosus (Steud.) Wats were suggested towards resolving some of the taxonomic complexes in Cymbopogon. The separate species status for the earlier proposed varieties of C. martinii (motia and sofia) is further substantiated by these analyses. The unidentified species of Cymbopogon have been observed as intermediate forms in the development of new taxa.  相似文献

The study contributes to the discussion of mastax evolution within Rotifera by giving an insight into the ultrastructure of the mastax in the rotifer species Filinia longiseta (Flosculariacea) and additionally into the bdelloid rotifer species Adineta vaga and Zelinkiella synaptae. The existence of cuticularized jaw elements (trophi) in the mastax, a muscular pharynx, is one of the defining rotiferan characters and the basis on which the monophyletic taxon Gnathifera Ahlrichs 1995a, comprising Rotifera, Gnathostomulida, Micrognathozoa and Acanthocephala, was erected. By means of SEM observations of the trophi and ultrathin serial sections (TEM) of the mastax, the internal and external organization of the jaw elements of F. longiseta is reconstructed. TEM sections of the incus of Filinia demonstrate that the fulcrum and the rami are built up by multitudes of tiny cuticular tubes. While tubular substructures in the rotiferan fulcrum have been described previously, distinct cuticular tubes as a substructure of the ramus have only been described for species belonging to the taxa Seisonidea and Bdelloidea so far ( [Koehler and Hayes, 1969] and [Ahlrichs, 1995b]). By comparing the appearance and arrangement of the cuticular tubes in the rami of F. longiseta to those found in species of Seisonidea and Bdelloidea, a higher degree of resemblance between the structures in F. longiseta and Bdelloidea can be reported. The occurrence of the ramus substructures in species of Seisonidea (Paraseison annulatus and Seison nebaliae) is given consideration to represent an intermediate between the ramus substructure of Bdelloidea/Flosculariacea and Ploima. Additionally, the mastax musculature of F. longiseta, being associated with the trophi, is described: A total of seven muscles are found that directly insert the jaw elements or are indirectly associated with them via muscle-to-muscle connections.  相似文献

Seventeen natural Bulgarian populations of the species of the genusCarex sect.Digitatae were studied morphologically and karyologically. Stepwise discriminant analysis was used as a multivariate test for the separation of groups of populations from different taxa and to find a subset of characters contributing most for this separation. The following taxa were found in Bulgaria:C. humilis Leysser var.humilis; C. humilis var.longifolia Stoeva etPopova, var. n.;C. digitata L.;C. ornithopoda Willd. subsp.bulgarica (Vel.) Stoeva etPopova, comb. n. Aneuploid series of some chromosome numbers were found inC. digitata — 2n=48, 50, 52, 54, 56 and inC. ornithopoda subsp.bulgarica?2n=52, 53, 54, 56.C. humilis has 2n=36 and a much more heterogeneous karyotype than that of the above taxa. The values of the Euclidean distance between the populations vary within similar limits in both speciesC. humilis andC. digitata; this is not in accordance with the karyological results. The within and between population morphological variations were compared in each species. The first dominates in overall variation, which is probably connected with the very large populations and their mosaic space structure.  相似文献

The taxonomic status ofEupatorium chinese var.oppositofolium andE. glehni (=E. chinense subsp.sachalinense) inE. chinense complex semsu Kitamura has long been controversial. In this paper, the degree of divergence between diploids of these two taxa was examined by means of morphological studies including principal component analysis, the electrophoretic analysis of esterase isozyme variation and observations on habitats. The data obtained through the examinations indicate these two taxa are diverged enough to be recognized as distinct biological species. Since the polyploidE. chinense var.oppositifolium is more or less intermediate in morphology between the two diploid taxa, it is considered to have masked the distinction between the two diploid taxa. Also, electrophoretic evidence suggests that polyploidE. chinense var.oppositifolium is not a hybrid or hybrid derivative withE. glehni as a parental species. Possible origin of polyploidE. chinense varoppositifolium is also discussed.  相似文献

A plant collected in South Africa in the early 1960's has been considered an intergeneric hybrid with the parental taxa beingRuspolia hypocrateriformis (Vahl)Milne-Redhead var.australis Milne-Redhead andRuttya ovata Harv. The intermediate morphology of the plant provided the strongest evidence of its hybrid origin. The natural hybrid, named formally as ×Ruttyruspolia A. Meeuse & de Wet, is highly sterile. Crosses between the two presumed parental taxa produced two plants that are very similar to the putative natural hybrid. We had examined the presumed parental species and the natural and artificial hybrids using enzyme electrophoresis. The two parental species are highly differentiated at genes specifying soluble enzymes; they have a genetic identity of 0.51. They have no common alleles at two genes, and contain alternative alleles in very different frequencies at two loci.Ruttya andRuspolia exhibit both unique and common alleles at two additional genes. The natural and artificially produced plants of ×Ruttyruspolia are identical electrophoretically and contain alleles unique to each of the parental species at two genes. In addition, individuals of ×Ruttyruspolia combine alternative high frequency alleles from each parent at two loci. Allozymes provide strong confirming evidence for the hybrid origin of naturally occurring ×Ruttyruspolia because the products of specific alleles either unique to or highly characteristic of the two putative parental taxa are found combined in ×Ruttyruspolia.  相似文献
