Summary

Stratigraphic, relative pollen analytical data and pollen concentration data are presented from two cores collected from a lowland infilled lake basin in the eastern Scottish Borderlands. The stratigraphic sequence between 1·30 m and 2·16 m shows an oscillation of open water and deep water sediments indicating lake-level changes. This is supported by the pollen analytical data which show a markedly changing pollen sedimentation rate and a hiatus in Flandrian II due to changing lake-levels and an overall reduction in water-level. Supporting evidence is also drawn from Din Moss, a nearby radiocarbon dated profile.  相似文献

Summary

Features of the vegetational history in a part of south-east Scotland are interpreted from three pollen diagrams from upland sites, two of which illustrate the whole Post-glacial from Zone IV to Zone VIII. Zones and Sub-zones of the Boreal forest development are identifiable and have been indicated. Evidence of agricultural activities of early man appear in sub-zone VIIb and the effect of these and of later clearances upon the primaeval forest are interpreted from the diagrams.  相似文献

Summary

Pollen analytical investigations are described from a site on the Pass of Drumochter in the central Grampian Highlands. Three pollen assemblage zones were identified in the profile which spans the mid- and late-Postglacial periods. The earliest vegetational record is of birch and hazel woodland, which was in turn succeeded by the establishment of pine forest, possibly around 7000 B.P. Declining arboreal pollen percentages and increased values for open-habitat taxa in the upper reaches of the profile reflect the impact of Neolithic man in the area, with the destruction of the forests, and the spread of dwarf shrub heath and heather moor across formerly wooded hillsides.  相似文献

Holocene sediments of three closed Danish lake basins (Solsø, Skånsø, Kragsø) were used for the inference of post-glacial vegetational dynamics in former heathland areas in northern West Jutland, Denmark. The sites were selected to represent the major geomorphological units of West Jutland. The Holocene history of each lake basin was investigated by mapping of sediment distribution, analysis of loss-on-ignition, coarse inorganic matter, humus content, mineral magnetics, δ13C, pollen and selected other microfossils. These techniques were supplemented by plant macrofossil analysis at one site. Holocene terrestrial vegetational development was inferred at each site from analyses of pollen and microscopical charred particles. Chronologies were provided by numerous 14C dates. Stratigraphies of wet ground and terrestrial pollen and spore types were zooned by stratigraphically constrained cluster analysis. Based on the resultant site pollen asemblage zones (site PAZ), regional PAZ were proposed. Using modern analogues, Holocene floristic richness was estimated from pollen richness in the microfossil assemblages. The results support the hypothesis that disturbance is one of the most important mechanisms behind the maintenance of floristic richness. In particular, the response of estimated floristic richness to the intensity of vegetational fires followed the predictions of the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis. A period of elevated palynological richness and inferred vegetational disturbance was identified at all sites between 6000 and 5200 BC (calendar years). Using correspondence analysis (CA), the major gradient in the terrestrial pollen sequences was identified as a light-shade gradient, and CA first axis sample scores were used as a supplement to standard AP/NAP pollen ratios as an indicator of the shade-tolerance/light-demand of Holocene terrestrial plant communities. In spite of different vegetational developments since 4000 BC, the timing of major changes towards more light-demanding vegetation types were broadly synchronous at the three sites. Using chord distance as a dissimilarity index, rales of palynological change suggest that the interval between 8000 and 7500 BC (calendar years) was the period of most rapid vegetational change during the Holocene, both in terrestrial as well as lacustrine ecosystems. While climatic forcing of the rapid events around 8000 BC is hypothesised, the synchronous timing of relatively rapid inferred change in lake and terrestrial vegetation around AD 600 may reflect changes in climate as well as in land-use. Reducdancy analysis was used to develop a model between fire intensity (inferred from microscopical charred particles) and vegetational response, as reflected by pollen assemblages. Formulated at one site and tested at the two other sites, the model explains regional Colluna-heathland expansions as a result of vegetational burning. Similarly, declines in heathland cover are explained by lack of maintenance by fire. Regional vegetational development in northern West Jutland is reconstructed and special consideration is given to heathland history. The Holocene heathland development is interpreted as resulting from its importance for grazing. It is hypothesized that on poor soils, Calluna-dominated heathland was a better grazing resource than grass-dominated pasture, due to the winter-grazing offered by Calluna and the low palatibility of dominant grasses on poor soils. This hypothesis is relevant for the explanation of the variation in timing of heathland expansions on the different soil types represented by the study sites.  相似文献

Abstract

On the use of characteristic specific combination to compare vegetational types. – A comparison between ordination and classification of phyto-sociological types using synthetic tables and characteristic specific combination of Raabe was made. The results of classification and ordination are very similar in both the cases, so that we can propose the characteristic specific combination of Raabe as a good method to limit the number of species when the vegetational types have to be classified.  相似文献

Summary

The long-standing debate of whether the Romans faced a wooded landscape when they invaded northern Britain is reassessed in light of new palynological evidence in the Hadrianic-Antonine frontier zone. The radiocarbon-dated pollen diagrams suggest that, except for at Fozy Moss, Northumbria, substantial woodland clearance was already underway prior to the Roman invasion of the area. It is evident that there was considerable spatial and temporal variability in the vegetation cover during the period under consideration.  相似文献

New information about the vegetational history of the Balearic Islands during part of the Holocene derives from the results of a pollen study of a 20‐metre‐deep core from Cala Galdana on the SW coast of Minorca.

The lower part of the pollen diagram at the beginning of the Atlantic Period records significant quantities of pollen of Corylus and also local taxa indicating swamp vegetation. In the middle part, Corylus is greatly reduced, AP percentages decrease appreciably and Olea and Ericaceae reach important values, while Plantago Poaceae and Cerealia increase significantly. In the upper part, a rise in Chenopodiaceae occurs, during which a slight increase of the arboreal taxa takes place with greater dryness. Most recently, vegetation changes reflect human activity.  相似文献

Abstract

The present paper examines some biological and ultrastructural aspects of fertilization and early development of the embryo in Cytinus hypocistis, a parasitic plant belonging to the Rafflesiaceae. The probable functions of a mucilaginous substance contained in the ovary and embedding the numerous pollen tubes coming from the style are discussed.

It was ascertained that pollen tubes pass through the micropyle and enter a synergid pushing, their way through the nucellar cells that show swollen walls owing to a probable enzymatic action whose function is to facilitate pollen tube penetration. It was hypothesized that the secretion of such enzymes is attributable to the numerous pollen present in the ovary or entering the mycropyle.

Since, in all the ovules observed, synergid degeneration was never found before the arrival of the pollen tube, this degeneration was interpreted as being caused by the material disharged by the pollen tube, rather than being an essential prerequisite for pollen tube penetration into the synergid.

Pollen tube content was observed to be made up of an intensely electron-dense substance surrounding many lipidic globules and numerous polysaccharide vesicles that fuse with the pollen tube wall, clearly contributing to its growth.

The sequence of the first divisions of the developing embryo was followed and the extreme reduction of the embryo is confirmed.

In Cytinus hypocistis starch is totally absent from all the sells belonging to the female gamethophyte as well as to those belonging to the embryo, but lipidic globules are very frequent; it is therefore supposed that these bodies constitute good material for the nutrition of the zygote and early embryo.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyse, by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), the validity of the typification of the pollen of Centaurea L. s.s., carried out by Wagenitz (1955) with light microscopy and based on the exine structure and sculpturing. The pollen of six species have been analyzed: one species for every type of pollen present in Italy: C. sempervirens L., C. alpina L., C. scabiosa L., C. alba L., C. montana L., C. cyanus L.

The validity of the pollen typification suggested by Wagenitz has been confirmed also at the ultramicroscopic level. The ultrastructure and the sculturing of the sporoderm are described in detail and some discrepancies, mainly due to the different potentialities offered by the two methods, are pointed out.  相似文献

Abstract

Viability and germinability tests were carried out on the pollen of Crocus sativus L., a sterile triploid commonly known as saffron. Pollen taken from dehiscent anthers was examined by means of vital staining and cytochemical techniques in order to detect its viability; germination in vitro was evaluated. From the results obtained it is evident that saffron pollen is viable at a high percentage (65%) but germinates at a very low percentage. Moreover in vitro germination is very slow, and is accompained by numerous morphological anomalies. The low germination of the pollen is due to the triploidy of C. sativus.  相似文献

Abstract

« Harmomegathy »: a still open problem not yet well-known. - Wodehouse used the term « Harmomegathy » to indicate the form and volume change in pollen grains, due to water loss or assumption. Roundish and tricolporate grains in the anther become oval and decrease in volume during the dehydration preceeding anthesis. Viceversa during rehydration on the stigma they undergo the opposite process.

Pollen water content at an thesis varies from species to species and it usually ranges between 10 and 20%; nevertheless in some families as Zingiberaceae and Araceae it is higher. Anther and pollen dehydrations are affected by environmental factors, such as humidity of air and temperature, before the anthesis and when pollen is suspended in air. Besides, to avoid the further loss of water during pollen flow, an oily layer derived from tapetum degeneration is deposited outside the pollen grains.

During dehydration and rehydration pollen grains undergo a stress due to shape and volume changes expecially in the colpus and/or pore areas. Pollen walls are structured in order to avoid their own damage, which could be followed by protoplast death and/or irregularities in grain shape. Intine, formed by pectocellulosic filaments, has elastic properties, as sporopollenin, the component of exine.

Stigma can be dry or wet, namely covered or not by stigmatic exudate giving place to different hydration patterns. The structure of intine and exine has to match that of the stigma, in fact pollen will find the best place and way to proper hydration only on stigmas of its own species. Grains structure also must be sterically conform to stigma: this is well-shown in species as Linum, Lytrum and Primula which have an heteromorphic autoincompatibility.

The right keeping of shape and structure of grains, despite the hydration and dehydration, is therefore essential to the physical-morphological recognition between pollen and stigma, which preceedes the biochemical recognition.  相似文献

Aim We analysed lake‐sediment pollen records from eight sites in southern New England to address: (1) regional variation in ecological responses to post‐glacial climatic changes, (2) landscape‐scale vegetational heterogeneity at different times in the past, and (3) environmental and ecological controls on spatial patterns of vegetation. Location The eight study sites are located in southern New England in the states of Massachusetts and Connecticut. The sites span a climatic and vegetational gradient from the lowland areas of eastern Massachusetts and Connecticut to the uplands of north‐central and western Massachusetts. Tsuga canadensis and Fagus grandifolia are abundant in the upland area, while Quercus, Carya and Pinus species have higher abundances in the lowlands. Methods We collected sediment cores from three lakes in eastern and north‐central Massachusetts (Berry East, Blood and Little Royalston Ponds). Pollen records from those sites were compared with previously published pollen data from five other sites. Multivariate data analysis (non‐metric multi‐dimensional scaling) was used to compare the pollen spectra of these sites through time. Results Our analyses revealed a sequence of vegetational responses to climate changes occurring across southern New England during the past 14,000 calibrated radiocarbon years before present (cal yr bp ). Pollen assemblages at all sites were dominated by Picea and Pinus banksiana between 14,000 and 11,500 cal yr bp ; by Pinus strobus from 11,500 to 10,500 cal yr bp ; and by P. strobus and Tsuga between 10,500 and 9500 cal yr bp . At 9500–8000 cal yr bp , however, vegetation composition began to differentiate between lowland and upland sites. Lowland sites had higher percentages of Quercus pollen, whereas Tsuga abundance was higher at the upland sites. This spatial heterogeneity strengthened between 8000 and 5500 cal yr bp , when Fagus became abundant in the uplands and Quercus pollen percentages increased further in the lowland records. The differentiation of upland and lowland vegetation zones remained strong during the mid‐Holocene Tsuga decline (5500–3500 cal yr bp ), but the pattern weakened during the late‐Holocene (3500–300 cal yr bp ) and European‐settlement intervals. Within‐group similarity declined in response to the uneven late‐Holocene expansion of Castanea, while between‐group similarity increased due to homogenization of the regional vegetation by forest clearance and ongoing disturbances. Main conclusions The regional gradient of vegetation composition across southern New England was first established between 9500 and 8000 cal yr bp . The spatial heterogeneity of the vegetation may have arisen at that time in response to the development or strengthening of the regional climatic gradient. Alternatively, the differentiation of upland and lowland vegetation types may have occurred as the climate ameliorated and an increasing number of species arrived in the region, arranging themselves in progressively more complex vegetation patterns across relatively stationary environmental gradients. The emergence of a regional vegetational gradient in southern New England may be a manifestation of the increasing number of species and more finely divided resource gradient.  相似文献

Summary A comparative study was carried out between aeroallergenic pollen spectra in Trieste and at Lozzo di Cadore. The two localities were found to be different on a five-day running mean basis as to the 8 pollen taxa monitored by the National Aerobiological Monitoring Network managed by the Italian Association of Aerobiology (AIA). In the zone of Lozzo the pollination curve of the spring flowering taxa showed a lag of about one month due to the colder climate. Lozzo di Cadore showed a poor airborne pollen content,Corylus and Graminaceae being prevailing. Trieste has a higher airborne pollen diversity and longer pollination times because of its higher floristic and vegetational complexity. In Trieste the allergenic pollen spectrum showed great quantities ofOstrya, Quercus, Oleaceae, Graminaceae and of ruderal taxa, widespread over the area, due to man's influence.  相似文献

Abstract

Pollen grain viability and starch presence in pollen were followed during the long blooming period (May-November) of Parietaria judaica, the most widespread pellitory in Italy, responsible for many cases of allergic diseases. Observations were carried out near Siena (Tuscany), in the years 1978 and 1979.

Viability is high in late spring and early autumn, and pollen grains are starchy. The presence of starchless grains is always related to low viability: a production of pollen with a low viability occurs at the beginning and end of blooming, and also in summer, during drought periods. Pollen grain viability varies widely during the blooming period, and its variations are correlated to meteorological conditions, mainly rainfall and temperature.

Allergic diseases due to pellitory, however, are mainly reported between April and July, and on the other hand a small amount of patients states that they suffer all the year round. The discrepancies between the periods of viable pollen production and of declared symptoms by patients, are discussed.  相似文献

Background: Flower orientation is considered an evolutionary response to pollinators and abiotic factors. Several members of the genus Cremanthodium (Asteraceae) growing in alpine habitats in the Sino–Himalayas have conspicuously nodding capitula, the function of which is not understood.

Aims: We investigated the influences of nodding capitula on floral thermal conditions, pollinator visitation rate, pollen viability and achene production in Cremanthodium campanulatum.

Results: (1) the nodding capitulum did not modify internal thermal conditions, but the elongated involucral bracts could shelter pollen from UV-B radiation; (2) water and UV-B radiation seriously reduced the viability of pollen grains; (3) capitula artificially held erect set significantly fewer achenes than nodding ones; and (4) no pollinator preference was observed between capitula that were artificially held erect and natural nodding ones.

Conclusions: This study indicated that the nodding capitulum of C. campanulatum may protect pollen from being damaged by UV-B radiation, being washed away from the anther and stigma, and enable it to avoid rain damage during the wet monsoonal period. Our results suggest that nodding capitula in C. campanulatum possibly confer a selective advantage and may be driven by non-biological agents rather than pollinator attractors.  相似文献

The pollen diagram from Stracciacappa (Sabatini volcanic complex, Rome) provides a record of vegetational and climatic change spanning the last 60000 years, which is the time since when volcanic activity in the crater came to an end. The chronological framework of the sediment core is set by five AMS and three conventional radiocarbon dates; the mean sedimentation rate obtained by radiocarbon measurements was used to extrapolate the age of the record beyond the reach of 14C dating. The sequence from Stracciacappa provides results of fundamental importance for the understanding of the vegetational changes which occurred during the last pleniglacial period in central Italy, and it can be considered as a reference pollen record for the regional biostratigraphic characterization of this period. The site shows a high climatic sensitivity, particularly highlighted by the development of some pleniglacial oscillations with woodland, which interrupted the succession of steppe and grassland vegetational formations typical of the glacial periods. Unfortunately, due to sedimentation problems and alteration of the top level sediments, the Holocene is only recorded in part. Only for one millennium, from ca. 8300 to 7200 uncalb.p., was a real forest expansion characterized by over 90% arboreal pollen found.  相似文献

Summary

Pollen analytical data are presented from a site near Cupar, Fife. The stratigraphy and pollen spectra are used to infer the changing patterns of vegetation in the area during the Lateglacial and Postglacial periods. In the Lateglacial Interstadial the local development of Betula-Juniperus scrub was followed by a period of open habitat during the colder Loch Lomond Stadial. The early Postglacial forest was dominated by Corylus and Betula, although Ulmus was also a major woodland component before the arrival of Alnus. Following some initial deforestation due to anthropogenic activity, subsequent woodland clearance was almost total and open habitat communities dominated.  相似文献

Forest succession was investigated by pollen analysis of two mor-humus sections and of peat from a 3 m-diameter hollow under mixed conifer-hardwood forest in north-central Massachusetts, USA. The humus profiles recorded a major forest perturbation caused by the removal of Castanea dentata by the chestnut blight (1910–1912), and the peat from the hollow extended the record beyond the time of colonial settlement (1733). Fagus grandifolia was a forest dominant before 1733 but declined abruptly upon settlement. Castanea, a late Holocene immigrant to the area, rapidly increased its pollen representation after settlement until the epidemic of the chestnut blight. Forest succession following the loss of Castanea involved the successive rise to dominance of Betula, Quercus, Acer rubrum, and Tsuga canadensis. These vegetational changes conform to observations made during studies of forest-stand composition by other workers. Allogenic factors such as logging, disease, and wind have initiated major compositional change, which has been modified by autogenic successional processes such as the gradual rise to dominance of Tsuga canadensis around one of the humus sections. The two humus sites resolve fine-scale pattern in former vegetation such as differences in the distribution of Pinus strobus and Castanea over 200 m, the distance between the mor-humus sites. These within-forest sites permit investigations of fine-scale vegetational patterns and processes that are of interest to forest ecologists.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to present the atmospheric pollen concentrations of Palencia, Spain. Data were collected for three consecutive years (1990–92). An active volumetric pollen trap, type CAP2, was used. During this time, 88 different pollen types were identified, of which 27 occured at more than 0.15% of the total pollen recorded annually. These types formed the main pollen spectrum of this sampling station. Pollen coming from herbs (Poaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Plantago Urticaceae, etc.) was predominant (53.79%); arboreal pollen (Quercus, Populus Cupressaceae, etc.) represented 42.11%, and pollen from shrubs (Ericaceae, Sambucus etc.) only 4.10%.

May and June was the time of the year with maximum pollen emission to the air. This was due to the quantities of pollen coming from Poaceae and Quercus which together represent 47.25% of the pollen recorded over the three‐year sampling period. Herbaceous pollen appeared throughout the year with maximum concentrations recorded in the spring, coinciding with the maximum levels of arboreal pollen in the atmosphere.

An analysis of multiple regression and one‐way anova test between pollen concentrations and selected meteorological parameters show that relative humidity and average temperature are the meteorological factors most correlated with the concentrations of specific pollen types (Plantago, Ligustrum, Sambucus, Carex). In the same way, when the winds are predominantly from the northeast (second quadrant), there are higher pollen concentrations of Sambucus Ericaceae and Mercurialis.  相似文献
