Several decades ago, due to eutrophication, Albufera de València lagoon lost the charophyte meadows that covered the bottom in the past but had never been studied in detail. An area close to the lagoon will be restored now to improve water quality and to recover submerged vegetation. To have information on the background of the charophytes from this area, four 80-87 cm long sediment cores were extracted from the lagoon. The subfossil charophyte fructifications (oospores and gyrogonites) were isolated and identified in two of the four cores. Moreover, sediment core fractions from the third and fourth cores were allowed to germinate under several conditions. The study of the lagoon sediments has revealed that at least 11 morphologies of charophyte fructifications existed in the past. Ten of these were determined at species level: Chara vulgaris, Chara hispida, Chara aspera, Chara baltica, Chara tomentosa, Chara globularis, Lamprothamnium papulosum, Nitella hyalina, Tolypella glomerata and Tolypella hispanica. However, one form of Chara gyrogonite did not fit in any known species. L. papulosum oospores and gyrogonites were the most abundant and concentrated in the deepest sediment layers when the lagoon held brackish water. Large changes in salinity due to freshwater input drove charophyte species substitution (disappearance of L. papulosum). During the oligohaline period C. vulgaris sexual propagules were the most abundant. The last charophyte community before its disappearance due to eutrophication was composed mainly of C. hispida, C. tomentosa and N. hyalina (the two latter with small numbers of oospores in the sediment). To characterize the morphology of the unidentified gyrogonite species, 100 specimens were studied. This type could be a local variety of a more common species, probably C. vulgaris, grown under particular ecological conditions. Old collected oospores (more than 45 years old) germinated and could be identified as C. vulgaris and C. hispida.  相似文献

Abstract The brackish water charophyte Lamprothamnium succinctum regulates its turgor pressure against changes in the external osmotic pressure. Upon hypotonic treatment, the rate of cytoplasmic streaming in the internodal cells fell to almost zero, and then recovered to the original value within 20 min. The decrease could be inhibited by lowering the external Ca2+ concentration in the hypotonic medium. Also, cytoplasmic streaming in tonoplast-free cells of L. succintum was sensitive to Ca2+ like freshwater charophyte. Thus, the concentration of free Ca2+ in the cytoplasm seems to increase transiently upon hypotonic treatment.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of macrophytes (Ruppia drepanensis) Tineo and Lamprothamnium papulosum (Wallr.) J. Gr. was studied along transects perpendicular to the shoreline in Lake Gallocanta (Aragón, NE Spain) in 1988 and 1990. In the shallow zone, a gradient from the shoreline to offshore waters was clear: Small R. drepanensis plants were the only colonizers of nearshore waters affected by wave action and desiccation. R. drepanensis and L. papulosum coexisted at intermediate depths in the shallow zone. L. papulosum reached higher biomasses than R. drepanensis in the deepest parts of the shallow zone. In the deepest zone of the lake, stands of the two species did not overlap. Individual plants of R. drepanensis occured patchily within a sparse prairie of L. papulosum. This spatial pattern was observed at different lake levels, suggesting that macrophytes are adapted to fluctuations of environmental conditions. In very shallow water the macrophytes decay as indicated by negative net production and low chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b and plant K+ concentration/water K+ concentration ratios.  相似文献

Internodal cells of a brackish water charophyte,Lamprothamnium succinctum (A. Br. in Ash.) R.D.W. regulate the turgor pressure in response to changes in both the cellular and the external osmotic pressures. During turgor regulation upon hypotonic treatment, net effluxes of K+ and Cl from the vacuole, membrane depolarization, a transient increase in the electrical membrane conductance and a transient increase in concentration of cytoplasmic Ca2+ are induced. Activation of the plasmalemma Ca2+ channels and the Ca2+-controlled passive effluxes of K+ and Cl through the plasmalemma ion channels are postulated.  相似文献

A stratigraphic, palaeontological and sedimentological study was carried out in the red beds cropping out on the left side of Oued Tafarahit, south-east of the Ksour Mountains (Algeria). The studied succession consists of a non-marine fining-upward detrital formation, including microconglomerate, sandstone and clay beds, which were previously attributed to the Cenozoic sensu lato, since no palaeontological evidence was available. Sedimentology suggests deposition in a fluvial environment. The clayey levels yielded the assemblage formed by the charophytes Peckichara atlasensis, Maedleriella cristellata, Nitellopsis (Tectochara) thaleri, Grovesichara sp., and Lamprothamnium papulosum and the ostracods Neocyprideis meguerchiensis, Herpetocypris? sp. and Cyprinotus? sp. This assemblage allows constraining the age of the detrital series from Oued Tafarahit to the Ypresian. Ostracods are typical of freshwater to euryhaline environments. The freshwater taxa (Herpetocypris? sp. and Cyprinotus? sp.) would indicate phases of desalinisation during periods of flood. However, the brackish water species (Neocyprideis meguerchiensis) is characteristic of saline phases related to low water table periods. Moreover the charophyte and ostracod assemblage confirms a close palaeobiogeographic relationship between North Africa and Southern Europe during the Lower Eocene.  相似文献

The occurrence of the unique autotrophic ciliate Mesodinium rubrum was investigated in a suite of lakes of various salinities situated in the Vestfold Hills oasis, Princess Elizabeth Land (eastern Antarctica). M. rubrum was found to occur in all but the most hypersaline lakes in the survey but was most numerous in the more brackish lakes. Salinity and water column temperature appeared to be the most important factors controlling the occurrence and abundance of this species. Nutrient levels (phosphate and nitrate) did not appear to be important controlling factors, although their influence may have been distorted by the fact that nutrient concentrations were generally higher in the more saline lakes. The widespread occurrence of this species in brackish and saline lakes of the Vestfold Hills provides opportunities to study the ecology and possible physiological and ultrastructural adaptations to living in a high-latitude environment of this ubiquitous and important species in marine microbial food webs.  相似文献

Mollusc and polychaete distribution in the mud flats along the Dese estuary (lagoon of Venice, Italy) was analysed in May, August and October to evaluate taxonomic biodiversity and zonation pattern of soft macrobenthos in an area of the lagoon hardly known from this point of view. Throughout the studied area most of the species were polychaetes, particularly Streblospio shrubsolii (Buchanan), which showed greater abundance from May to October. Molluscs and polychaetes showed a zonation of marine species which colonize brackish environments in the outer and intermediate areas of the estuary and of brackish water species in the inner one. In the outer area different assemblages were attributed to different sediment types. This distribution pattern, put in relation to the distance from the sea, was evident in May and partly blurred in August and October: the assemblages of the inner area of the estuary invaded the intermediated area in August and affected outer area in October because of spreading of the brackish water species S. shrubsolii, which became dominant. The distribution pattern of molluscs and polychaetes can be explained in terms of confinement as the leading factor influencing water quality and dynamics of the ecosystem. It is also needed to be taken into consideration the role played by competition due to different degree of opportunism of the most abundant species.  相似文献

Coastal lagoons are at risk internationally due to impacts associated with human-induced land use change. The resilience of aquatic macrophytes in these systems is threatened by altered hydrological regimes, elevated nutrient loading, and increased dominance of nuisance species. We describe the aquatic plant dynamics of the Waituna Lagoon Ramsar Site, a 1,350?ha lagoon frequently opened to the sea for flood mitigation which is characterised by fluctuating water levels and salinity. The shallow lagoon supports a macrophyte community dominated by Ruppia megacarpa and R. polycarpa. Repeated survey of 48 sites across the lagoon during late summer in 2009, 2010 and 2011 were applied to describe aquatic plant composition and abundance. This period coincided with three opening events (winter 2008; winter 2009; spring 2010) when the lagoon switched from a predominantly fresh-brackish system to being influenced by tidal exchange and lower water levels. The lagoon experienced a period of 43?days open to the sea in 2008?C2009, 67?days in 2009?C2010 and 181?days in 2010?C2011, during which macrophytes were subject to saline conditions in excess of 10?ppt. We observed a decline in the occurrence of Ruppia from 2009 (69?% sites) to 2011 (23?% sites). The shift in productivity was associated with the duration of the open phase and the period plants were subject to saline conditions >20?ppt and low water levels. The resilience of the system is also at risk from increased algal-dominance due to the intensification of agricultural land use occurring in the Waituna Lagoon catchment. While lagoon opening events cause extreme changes in water depth and salinity that can limit macrophyte growth, they also provide a mechanism to reduce the effects of eutrophication. Understanding these trade-offs is pivotal in management decisions regarding the likely impact of opening events on the ecological character of coastal lagoons.  相似文献

Rodlet cells in intestinal epithelia of infected and uninfected European eels Anguilla anguilla from brackish and fresh water were studied by light and electron microscopy. Deropristis inflata (Trematoda) was found in eels from brackish water, whereas eels from fresh water were infected with Acanthocephalus clavula (Acanthocephala). In a comparison between uninfected and infected eels from brackish water, a higher number of rodlet cells was recorded in the intestinal epithelia of infected fish. Evidence is presented that rodlet cells secrete their contents in a holocrine manner into the lumen of the eel intestine. The occurrence of organelles within the mature rodlet cell was rare. ? 1998 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles  相似文献

Growth rates of the entire phytoplankton community of a brackish lagoon in northeastern Japan were estimated by measuring increasing chlorophyll a content in dialysis bags during the summer and early autumn of 1986. The chlorophyll a contents of lagoon water fluctuated between 20 and 200 mg m–3. At lower densities of phytoplankton (20–50 mg chl. a m–3), growth rates (the rate of increase of chlorophyll a) exceeded 1 turnover per day, while at higher densities (more than 50 mg chl. a m–3), the growth rate decreased rapidly. Tidal exchanges of chlorophyll a showed net exports of chlorophyll a from the lagoon to adjacent waters. The exchange rate of chlorophyll a was estimated to be 0.65 d–1. At about 140 mg m–3 of chlorophyll a concentration, the increase of chlorophyll in the lagoon water compensated for tidal export. Only a small proportion of primary production was consumed by zooplankton in the lagoon. There were also net exports of ammonium and phosphate from the lagoon. Nutrient flux from sediment exceeded the phytoplankton requirement and was the major source of the ammonium and phosphate exports from the lagoon. The low inorganic N/P atom supply ratio in the lagoon suggests that nitrogen is a major nutrient limiting phytoplankton growth.  相似文献

Identifying the factors influencing the settlement of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) juveniles in continental habitats is crucial to designing effective management and conservation measures for this endangered species. A long-term data series (1993–2008) of European eel and European catfish (Silurus glanis) abundance in a freshwater canal of the Camargue water system (southern France), along with parallel data on water salinity and glass eel abundance in the adjacent Vaccarès lagoon, was analysed to identify the possible causes of decline in eel abundance observed in the canal during the last two decades. A model including glass eel recruitment and catfish abundance as covariates explained 78% of the observed variation in eel settlement success. Results suggest that (1) salinity does not play a significant role in determining the fraction of eels moving from the brackish lagoon to the canal; (2) density dependence affects settlement success, possibly through a reduction of juvenile survival in the adjacent lagoon; and (3) catfish abundance is negatively correlated with eel settlement. We discuss this latter point in terms of possible predation of catfish upon eels and/or inter-specific competition between the two species.  相似文献

The distribution patterns of macrobenthic invertebrate assemblages at different spatial scales and in relation to natural and anthropogenic disturbance gradients were investigated in the Pialassa Baiona, a eutrophic and polluted brackish coastal lagoon located along the Italian coast of the northern Adriatic Sea. This coastal lagoon shows a complex physiography with several shallow water ponds and channels separated by discontinuous artificial embankments. Environmental variables and macrobenthic invertebrate assemblages showed higher heterogeneity at small spatial scale (i.e. within channels and ponds). Distinction between channels and ponds is only weakly supported by the distribution patterns of macrobenthic assemblages. Depth was the major factor in structuring benthic communities within ponds, while species distributions along the channels were strongly correlated with the anthropogenic disturbance gradient. Anthropogenic disturbance mainly affected species richness, which was inversely correlated with the organic carbon contents in the sediments and the water surface temperature, which is affected by the input of cooling water from two thermal power plants. Some opportunistic species, like the polychaetes Streblospio shrubsolii and Capitella capitata, were more abundant in the southern polluted areas. In particular, the abundance of S. shrubsolii significantly increased with organic carbon contents in the sediments and water surface temperature, while C. capitata was more abundant in the warmed sites and close to sewages. Conversely, the abundance of the amphipod Corophium insidiosum was inversely related to organic carbon contents.  相似文献

In brackish lagoons, Daphnia is replaced by calanoid copepods (Eurytemora affinis, Acartia spp.) and rotifers when a certain threshold (depending on, for instance, fish density) is reached. We hypothesize that loss of Daphnia induces a regime shift from clear to turbid at high nutrient concentrations. We conducted a factorial designed enclosure experiment with contrasting salinities (0–16‰), low fish predation (one three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, m−2) and three levels of nutrient loading in a shallow brackish lagoon. A change point analysis suggests a strong regime shift from a clear to a turbid state at 6–8‰ salinity at low and high loading, but not for the control. From the low to the high salt regime, chlorophyll a (Chla), Chla:total phosphorus (TP) and Chla:total nitrogen (TN) ratios shifted highly significantly for all nutrient treatments, and the bacterioplankton production followed the changes in Chla. These changes occurred parallel with a shift from cladoceran and cyclopoid copepod to rotifer dominance. Monitoring data from 60 Danish brackish lagoons show increasing Chla with increasing TP and TN as well as interactive effects of TN and salinity, peaking at intermediate salinity. A relatively weak effect of salinity at low nutrient concentrations and the stronger effect at intermediate high salinity are in accordance with the experimental results. However, these data suggest a lower salinity threshold than in the experiment, which may be explained by a higher fish density. Our results have implications for the management of coastal lagoons both at present and in a future (predicted) warmer climate: (1) improved water quality can be obtained by reducing the nutrient loading or enhancing the freshwater input to a level triggering a shift to Daphnia dominance (typically <2‰), (2) fish manipulation is probably not a useful tool for brackish lagoons, unless the salinity is below the threshold for a potential shift to a clear Daphnia dominated state, and (3) more abrupt changes will expectedly occur in low-saline coastal lagoons at increasing salinity during summer in a future warmer climate.  相似文献

Secondary salinisation is recognised worldwide as a threat to aquatic biodiversity. Wetlands in the Wheatbelt Region of Western Australia are particularly affected as a result of clearing of deep-rooted native vegetation for agriculture. Between 1996 and 2001, the Western Australian government nominated six natural diversity recovery catchments (NDRCs), being catchments with high value and diverse wetlands in need of protection. One, the Buntine–Marchagee NDRC, supports approximately 1000 wetlands in varying states of salinisation. The challenge is to prioritise these wetlands for ongoing management. In this paper we propose an approach to prioritise representative wetlands using aquatic invertebrates. On the basis of hydrology, salinity and remnant vegetation, 20 wetlands covering a range of salinities were selected for sampling of water quality and aquatic invertebrates. Of the 202 taxa recorded, most endemic taxa occurred in fresh/brackish wetlands, while hypersaline wetlands supported predominantly cosmopolitan species. Taxa richness was greater in fresh/brackish than saline and hypersaline wetlands, with conductivity explaining 83 % of between-wetland variation in taxa richness. Classification using invertebrate assemblages separated fresh/brackish, saline and hypersaline wetlands, with greatest between-year variability within saline and hypersaline sites. Wetlands were ranked using taxa diversity, presence of conservation-significant taxa and temporal similarity. Mean rank across indices provided the final overall order of priority. Hypersaline wetlands were ordered separately to the fresher water wetlands (fresh/brackish and saline) so that priority for future management was detailed for both types of wetlands. The analysis indicated that although fresh/brackish sites support the highest biodiversity, naturally saline sites also supported wetland assemblages worthy of ongoing protection.  相似文献

Abstract

This research was aimed to assess the photosynthetic activities of barley (Hordeum valgare L.), clover (Trifolium repens L.), and pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) under different saline conditions with two strains of Pseudomonas putida (UW3 and UW4) treatments. An exceptional observation was revealed on barley biomass ratio (288.8%) that irrigated with brackish saline water (10,000?mg/L) with the presence of P. putida UW4 strain. In general, P. putida UW3 strain was significantly increased crops biomass ratio (249.4%, 202.1%, and 212.5%) for barley, pearl millet, and clover, respectively, which were irrigated with 10,000?mg/L brackish saline water. Plant root and shoot systems were significantly increased in their length and weight reflecting the improvement of plants’ photosynthetic activities under salt stress conditions with the presence of P. putida strains. The results from pulse amplitude modulation fluorometry showed that the plants were recovered from the saline stress effect once P. putida strains were applied. The outcome of this research was highly recommended to apply P. putida strains (UW3 and UW4) with field crops for phytoremediation, in particular, where salinity (soil and/or brackish water) was environmentally challenging.  相似文献

The big‐scale sand smelt Atherina boyeri lives in fresh water, brackish water and sea water of the western Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Previous studies concerning distribution, biometric characters and genetic molecular markers have suggested the possible existence of two or even three different groups or species of sand smelt, one ‘lagoon’ type and one (or two – punctuated and non‐punctuated on the flanks) ‘marine’ type. In this study, the presence and the localization of an insertion was described, c. 200 bp in length, in the mtDNA of the lagoon and marine punctuated specimens of A. boyeri and its absence in the marine non‐punctuated specimens, as well as in other two congeneric species, Atherina hepsetus and Atherina presbyter, and in the atheriniform Menidia menidia. The intergenic spacer is located between the tRNAGlu and cytochrome b (cyt b) genes and shares a c. 50% sequence similarity with cyt b. The distribution and the features of the intergenic spacer suggest that it might have originated from an event of gene duplication, which involved the cyt b gene (or, more likely, a part of it) and which took place in the common ancestor of the lagoon and the marine punctuated specimens. The data obtained therefore support the hypothesis of the existence of three cryptic and, or sibling species within the A. boyeri taxon and provide a genetic molecular marker to distinguish them.  相似文献

The role of current velocity as an environmental factor affecting the distribution of amphipod species was investigated in the brackish Gamo lagoon, Japan. Two gammaridean amphipod species, Eogammarus possjeticus and Melita setiflagella, were found inhabiting stations of different water current with same substrates. E. possjeticus and M. setiflagella selected substrates at low and high water current, respectively. The lifestyles and anatomical features of these two free-living amphipods contributed to their adaptation to habitats with different water currents. The results of field and experimental observations suggest the existence of some type of interspecific competition between the two species. The presence of E. possjeticus caused a displacement of the fundamental niche of M. setiflagella. Received: October 10, 2000 / Accepted: August 17, 2001  相似文献

Edaphic (sediment-associated) diatoms were collected from five sites along a gradient from slightly brackish to saline marsh on 30 November 1977 and 29 April 1978. Several environmental factors change along this gradient in addition to salinity, including tidal flushing and percent organic content of the soil. A total of 112 taxa were identified, with Amphora exigua Greg., Navicula phyllepta Kütz., N. salinarum Grun., and N. tripunctata (Müll.) Bory being among the five most abundant taxa on both sampling dates. The taxonomic composition of the diatom flora was very similar to those observed for other salt marshes located along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Diatom taxa were generally euryhaline and distributed continuously along the gradient from brackish to saline marsh. Species diversity (H1) and the number of taxa in a sample (S) were also similar to those reported for other North American salt marshes. The number of taxa in a sample was higher in the saline than in the brackish area on both sampling dates while species diversity was greater in the saline area only in April.  相似文献

Synopsis The littoral environment and fish fauna of Swartvlei, an estuarine lake, was monitored for four years during which major habitat changes occurred. Initially (1979) the zone was dominated by the submerged macrophytes Potamogeton pectinatus, Chara globularis and Lamprothamnium papulosum. This plant community was replaced by filamentous algal mats during 1980 and with the disappearance of these mats in 1981 the littoral zone was transformed into a sandy habitat. There was a highly significant decline in the numbers of fishes in the littoral zone between the macrophyte and sand phases but no significant decrease in fish biomass between the two phases. Analysis of gill net catches revealed an increase in the CPUE of the family Mugilidae between the macrophyte and sand phases but a decline in the CPUE of vegetation associated species such as Monodactylus falciformis and Rhabdosargus holubi over the same period. The increase in mullet stocks during the sand phase was attributed to epipsammic micro-algal production and the input of allochthonous detritus during the 1981 floods. The three fish species diversity indices used in this study showed minor fluctuations between the habitat phases and these variations were related to changes in the equitability of distribution between the individual species within each habitat type. The numbers of fish species recorded during the macrophyte, algal mat and sand phases varied by less than 20%. The resilience of estuarine fishes to major alterations in their environment was illustrated by the fact that all fish species recorded at the beginning of 1979 were present at the end of 1982, despite major habitat and food resource changes.  相似文献

Possible reproductive isolation between freshwater and brackish water populations of the dioecious charophyte Chara aspera was studied by means of cross-fertilization experiments and AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism). Three Swedish freshwater populations and three (German and Swedish) Baltic Sea populations of C. aspera were sampled. Cross-fertilization experiments were performed in a full combination setup of all populations and with two different salinities (0 and 10 PSU). Both freshwater and brackish water females formed about 70% more gametangia at 0 than at 10 PSU. Male individuals collected from freshwater had higher fertility than brackish water males at both salinities. 57% of all gametangia of females from freshwater developed into oospores compared to only 8% of gametangia of brackish water females. 42% of all oospores were fertilized in crosses between habitats (freshwater–brackish water) compared to 36% in crosses within habitats, the difference was not significant.Oospore and bulbil germination was investigated using propagules from freshwater and brackish water populations and incubation salinities of 0, 5, 10 and 20 PSU. None of the oospores collected from brackish water germinated. Germination of oospores and bulbils from freshwater was higher at 0 and 5 PSU than at higher salinities. Only around 40% of bulbils from brackish water germinated at 20 PSU compared to around 70% at the other three salinities. Germination of all bulbils was delayed at 20 PSU compared to other salinities.Genetic similarities (Jaccard indices of AFLP data) were higher within than between populations, but comparisons within habitat (freshwater–freshwater and brackish water–brackish water) were not different from comparisons between habitats. Our results did not identify any reproductive isolation between freshwater and brackish water populations, but indicate low gene flow between the two habitats. Oospore and bulbil germination success were highest at salinities corresponding to the conditions of their original habitat, suggesting genetic adaptation to their environmental conditions and indicating that propagules transported from freshwater to brackish water or vice versa will hardly develop into fertile plants. Additionally, brackish water plants perform poorer in all aspects of sexual reproduction than freshwater plants. Possibly, successful dispersal of oospores is not subjected to high selective pressure within the Baltic Sea where new sites easily can be colonized by means of vegetative reproduction. We assume that these adaptations will favour speciation within C. aspera and support the idea of the geologically young Baltic Sea as a “cradle of plant evolution”.  相似文献
