动物生物学实践教学是生命科学本科教学的重要内容,为了适应高等教育改革和宽口径人才培养模式的要求,在动物生物学实践教学中,以培养学生技能为指导思想,对其实践教学的内容和方法进行改革,旨在实践教学中充分发挥学生的主观能动性,激发学生兴趣,培养学生的综合实践能力.同时,针对动物生物学实验及实习教学中存在的问题,提出了实践教学改进方面可行的建议.     

浅谈细胞生物学实验教学改革

开设细胞生物学实验课程3年来,围绕以技术学为中心,向单独设课及开放式实验教学的方向,分步进行教学改革与探索。同时对课程改革中出现的课时计划、实验室管理及建立细胞生物学实验课程体系等问题,进行了初步探讨。

The Bielefeld teaching program in zoo biology

The teaching program in zoo biology of the University of Bielefeld offers a 4-week course that aims at providing special knowledge of zoos and zoo animals from theoretical, educational, and applied points of view. The course includes 1 week each of seminar-type lectures, a 1-week visit to one particular zoo, “comparative” 1-day visits to different zoos, and reports and seminars to be given by the participants. During the “zoo week” the students are required to select one of the exhibits and to make full-day behavioral observations of the animals. Requirements include seminar talks, a protocol about the observations, and the design of a label.     

Addressing the threat to biodiversity from botanic gardens

Increasing evidence highlights the role that botanic gardens might have in plant invasions across the globe. Botanic gardens, often in global biodiversity hotspots, have been implicated in the early cultivation and/or introduction of most environmental weeds listed by IUCN as among the worst invasive species worldwide. Furthermore, most of the popular ornamental species in living collections around the globe have records as alien weeds. Voluntary codes of conduct to prevent the dissemination of invasive plants from botanic gardens have had limited uptake, with few risk assessments undertaken of individual living collections. A stronger global networking of botanic gardens to tackle biological invasions involving public outreach, information sharing and capacity building is a priority to prevent the problems of the past occurring in the future.     

How evolutionary biology challenges the classical theory of rational choice

A fundamental philosophical question that arises in connection with evolutionary theory is whether the fittest patterns of behavior are always the most rational. Are fitness and rationality fully compatible? When behavioral rationality is characterized formally as in classical decision theory, the question becomes mathematically meaningful and can be explored systematically by investigating whether the optimally fit behavior predicted by evolutionary process models is decision-theoretically coherent. Upon investigation, it appears that in nontrivial evolutionary models the expected behavior is not always in accord with the norms of the standard theory of decision as ordinarily applied. Many classically irrational acts, e.g. betting on the occurrence of one event in the knowledge that the probabilities favor another, can under certain circumstances constitute adaptive behavior. One interesting interpretation of this clash is that the criterion of rationality offered by classical decision theory is simply incorrect (or at least incomplete) as it stands, and that evolutionary theory should be called upon to provide a more generally applicable theory of rationality. Such a program, should it prove feasible, would amount to the logical reduction of the theory of rational choice to evolutionary theory.

Inquiry-based training improves teaching effectiveness of biology teaching assistants

Graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) are used extensively as undergraduate science lab instructors at universities, yet they often have having minimal instructional training and little is known about effective training methods. This blind randomized control trial study assessed the impact of two training regimens on GTA teaching effectiveness. GTAs teaching undergraduate biology labs (n = 52) completed five hours of training in either inquiry-based learning pedagogy or general instructional “best practices”. GTA teaching effectiveness was evaluated using: (1) a nine-factor student evaluation of educational quality; (2) a six-factor questionnaire for student learning; and (3) course grades. Ratings from both GTAs and undergraduates indicated that indicated that the inquiry-based learning pedagogy training has a positive effect on GTA teaching effectiveness.
