Seasonal fluctuation in river stage strongly affects the ecological functioning of tropical floodplain lakes. This study was conducted to assess the influence of hydrological seasonality on bacterial production and abundance in two floodplain lakes of the Autana River, a blackwater river in the Middle Orinoco basin, Venezuela. Water samples for nutrient chemistry, chlorophyll a, and microbiological determinations were collected in two floodplain lakes and in the mainstem of the river during 1997–98. DOC and chlorophyll a concentrations were similar between mainstem and lake sites during high water when river and lakes were well connected but became different during the period of low water when the interaction was minimal. Higher values of bacterial production were observed in the floodplain lakes (0.62–1.03 g C l–1 h–1) compared to the mainstem sites (0.17–0.19 g C l–1 h–1) during the period of low water, while during the period of high water river and lake sites showed similar levels (0.04 g C l–1 h–1). Bacterial numbers followed bacterial production in the floodplain lakes, reaching higher numbers during the period of low water (1.41–2.40 × 106 cells ml–1). Availability of substrate and inorganic nutrients, pH, and inputs and losses of bacterial cells could be determining the observed seasonal patterns in bacterial production and abundance. The Autana lakes exhibited a strong seasonal pattern in the chemical and biological conditions, showing higher productivity during the lentic phase that lasted between 5 and 6 months.  相似文献

Food concentration (0.5 × 103 – 5 × 105 Scenedesmus cells m1–1) significant influenced the somatic growth, maturation and survivorship ofS. proboscideus larvae. A density of 5 × 104 cells m1–1 was optimal for early larval stages. Of four temperature tested (20–35 °C), 30 °C resulted in the best growth and survival. Maturation time was inversely related to temperature, and was size- rather that age-dependent. Larvae were tolerant of a wide conductivity range, but optimal growth and survival were observed at 260 µS cm–1. Nitrate-Nitrogen (NO2-N) caused a larval mortality of 50% after 24 h at 0.58 mg1–1.  相似文献

Coupons of stainless steel type AISI-304 were exposed to the industrial cooling system of a petrochemical plant fed by seawater from the Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in order to study thein situ formation of biofilms. Bacteria, microalgae and fungi were detected on the coupons as soon as 48 h after exposure. Their respective numbers were determined at times 48, 96 and 192 h and over the following 8 weeks. Aerobic, anaerobic and sulfate-reducing bacteria were quantified according to the technique of the most probable number, and fungi by the pour plate technique. The number of microorganisms present in the forming biofilm varied over the experimental period, reaching maximal levels of 14×1011 cells cm–2, 30×1013 cells cm–2, 38×1011 cells cm–2 and 63×105 cells cm–2, respectively, for aerobic bacteria, anaerobic bacteria, sulfate-reducing bacteria and fungi, and the dynamics of this variation depended on the group of microorganisms.Bacillus sp,Escherichia coli, Serratia sp andPseudomonas putrefaciens were identified among the aerobic bacteria isolated. Additionally, microalgae and bacteria of the genusGallionella were also detected. Nonetheless, no evidence of corrosion was found on the stainless steel type AISI-304 coupons over the experimental period.  相似文献

Factors influencing the species composition, distribution and abundance of benthic invertebrates were determined in a eutrophic subarctic lake from April 1978 to April 1979. Collections were made at five stations located at depths of 4 to 13 m. The largest populations of up to 5 × 103 animals m–2 were found in the deepest part of the lake. of the 24 species recorded in this area, the chironomidsProcladius denticulatus, Dicrotendipes modestus, Chironomus decorus andGlyptotendipes barbipes were most common. The strong development of benthos in the profundal zone was attributed to a consistently large supply of food and warm (4 °C) winter temperatures on bottom. Slightly smaller populations (up to 4 × 103 animals, m–2), composed of 19–23 species, occurred in shallower water, a reflection of lower (1.5 °C) winter temperatures. In the anoxic northern part of the lake, only 4–8 species were found in low numbers (400–1 000 animals m–2). This was likely due to low (<5% saturation) oxygen levels in water and high organic content (18.5%) of the sediments.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of meiofauna in the sediments ofAvicennia marina,Bruguiera gymnorrhiza,Ceriops tagal,Rhizophora mucronata andSonneratia alba at Gazi Bay (Kenya), is described. Seventeen taxa were observed, with highest densities in the sediments ofBruguiera (6707 ind. 10 cm–2), followed byRhizophora (3998 ind. 10 cm–2),Avicennia (3442 ind. 10 cm–2),Sonneratia (2889 ind. 10 cm–2) andCeriops (1976 ind. 10 cm–2). Nematodes accounted for up to 95% of total densities; other common taxa were copepods, turbellarians, oligochaetes, polychaetes, ostracods and rotifers. High densities occurred to about 20 cm depth in the sediment. EspeciallyCeriops sediments show still high densities of nematodes (342 ind. 10 cm–2) and copepods (11 ind. 10 cm–2) in the deepest layer (15–22 cm). Particle size and oxygen conditions were major factors influencing meiobenthic distribution;Uca burrows had a major impact on distribution and abundance of meiofauna.  相似文献

We investigated how benthic nanoflagellate communities in marine sediments respond to sedimentation of organic material and to the presence of macrofaunal organisms in controlled boxcosms. An input of 24 g C m–2 resulted in a sharp increase in densities, from 93 to 477 × 103 flagellates cm–3 within 11 days. At the onset, this increase was paralleled by enhanced bacterial production and bacterial numbers. When bacterial production collapsed, flagellate ingestion rates, varying from 17 to 67 bact flag–1 h–1, were sufficient to control bacterial abundance. The presence of macrofauna accelerated the burst in flagellate densities. With macrofauna the same maximum densities were reached, but later densities dropped to relatively low levels. Macrofaunal bioturbation resulted in higher flagellate densities deeper in the sediment (up to 1200% at 3 cm and up to 460% at 6 cm deep). Correspondence to: R.P.M. Bak.  相似文献

Investigations on the abundance, biomass and position of heterotrophic flagellates (HF) in the benthic microbial food web of a melt water stream on King George Island, Antarctic Peninsula, were undertaken during the Antarctic summer from 23rd December 1997 until 13th March 1998. Abundance and biomass of potential HF resources (picophotoautotrophic and non-photoautotrophic bacteria) as well as potential predators on HF (ciliates and meiofauna) were also investigated. HF abundance ranged from approximately 9 × 103 to 81 × 103 cells cm–3, values which fall into the same range as those found in lower latitudes. Numerically important benthic HF were euglenids, kinetoplastids, thaumatomastigids and especially chrysomonads. Most species identified have been shown to have a worldwide distribution. Abundance of the benthic ciliates ranged from 27 to 950 cells cm–3. Mean bacterial abundance was 1.9 × 107 and 5.2 × 108 cells cm–3 for picophotoautotrophic and non-photoautotrophic benthos, respectively. The well-developed microbial community was able to support the large number of nematods, gastotrichs, tardigrads and rotifers with abundances reaching more than 1000 individuals cm–3. The largest portion of heterotrophic biomass was formed by the meiofauna with a mean of 63 g C cm–3, followed by that of the heterotrophic bacteria with 4.80 g C cm–3. Picophotoautotrophic bacteria contributed a mean of 1.37 g C cm–3. HF and ciliates mean biomass was 0.61 and 1.99 g C cm–3, respectively, with the HF biomass comprising between <10 and 70% of the total protozoan biomass. The data obtained in this study identify the melt water stream as a hot-spot of heterotrophic microbial and meiofaunal activity during the austral summer. The HF in the melt water stream formed a diverse group in terms of taxa and potential feeding types. Chrysomonads, kinetoplastids, euglenids and thaumatomastigida were the most abundant taxa. A classification into feeding types identified an average of 34% of the total HF as bacterivorous while all others were able to utilise other, larger organisms as resources. Potential trophic interactions between HF and bacteria and higher trophic levels are discussed.  相似文献

The McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica form the coldest and driest ecosystem on Earth. Within this region there are a number of perennially ice-covered (3–6 m thick) lakes that support active microbial assemblages and have a paucity of metazoans. These lakes receive limited allochthonous input of carbon and nutrients, and primary productivity is limited to only 6 months per year owing to an absence of sunlight during the austral winters. In an effort to establish the role that bacteria and their associated viruses play in carbon and nutrient cycling in these lakes, indigenous bacteria, free bacteriophage, and lysogen abundances were determined. Total bacterial abundances (TDC) ranged from 3.80 × 104 to 2.58 × 107 cells mL–1 and virus-like particle (VLP) abundances ranged from 2.26 × 105 to 5.56 × 107 VLP mL–1. VLP abundances were significantly correlated (P < 0.05) with TDC, bacterial productivity (TdR), chlorophyll a (Chl a), and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP). Lysogenic bacteria, determined by induction with mitomycin C, made up between 2.0% and 62.5% of the total population of bacteria when using significant decreases and increases in TDC and VLP abundances, respectively, and 89.5% when using increases in VLP abundances as the sole criterion for a successful induction event. The contribution of viruses released from induced lysogens contributed <0.015% to the total viral production rate. Carbohydrate and protein based organic aggregates were abundant within the water column of the lakes and were heavily colonized by bacteria and VLPs. Alkaline phosphatase activity was detected within the matrix of the aggregates, implying phosphorus deficiency and consortial nutrient exchanges among microorganisms.  相似文献

The results of the first systematical investigation into the aerobic methanotrophic communities inhabiting the bottom sediments of Lake Baikal have been reported. Use of the radioisotopic method revealed methane consumption in 12 10- to 50-cm-long sediment cores. The maximum methane consumption rates (495–737 µl/(dm3 day) were recorded in sediments in the regions of hydrothermal vents and oil and gas occurrence. Methane consumption was most active in the surface layers of the sediments (0–4 cm); it decreased with the sediment depth and became negligible or absent at depths below 20 cm. The number of methanotrophic bacteria usually ranged from 100 to 1000 cells/cm3 of sediment and reached 1 million cells/cm3 in the regions of oil and gas occurrence. The seventeen enrichment cultures obtained were represented mainly by morphotype II methanotrophs. Phylogenetic analysis of the enrichment cultures in terms of the amino acid sequence of the α subunit of the membrane-bound methane monooxygenase (MMO) revealed the predominance of methanotrophs of the genus Methylocystis. The effects of small negative air ions on the oxygen uptake of isolated mouse liver cells were studied by exposing the liver cells to varying ion concentrations. For concentrations of the order of 1–2 × 105 ions/cm3, the oxygen uptake was always higher than in the normal atmospheric conditions of 3–8 × 102/ions/cm3. For intermediate concentrations varying effects of activation and inhibition were observed. A statistical analysis showed that the oxygen uptake increased by approximately 14% when liver cells were exposed to ion concentrations of values 1–9 times the normal, by approximately 9% when exposed to 10–99 times the normal, and by approximately 38% when exposed to 100–999 times the normal. The significance and possible implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

The abundance and relative importance of autotrophic picoplankton were investigated in two lakes of different trophic status. In the eutrophic lake, measurements of primary production were performed on water samples in situ and in a light incubator three times during the day whereas for the oligotrophic lake, only one measurement of primary production was performed on water samples in the incubator. Dark-carbon losses of phytoplankton from Lake Loosdrecht were investigated in time series. Cell numbers of autotrophic picoplankton in eutrophic Lake Loosdrecht (3.2 × 104 cells ml–1) were lower than in meso-oligotrophic Lake Maarsseveen (9.8 and 11.4 × 104 cells ml–1 at the surface and bottom respectively). In the phytoplankton of both lakes the ratio of picoplankton production increased with decreasing light intensity. In Lake Loosdrecht depth-integrated contribution of picoplankton to total photosynthesis was less than 4%. The P-I-relationship showed diurnal variations in light saturated photosynthesis, while light limited carbon uptake remained constant during the day. Dark carbon losses from short-term labelled phytoplankton during the first 12 hours of the night period accounted for 10–25% of material fixed during the preceeding light period.  相似文献

Summary Estimates of bacterial numbers from raw sewage sludge and sludge treated by thermophilic aerobic digestion were compared with simple indicators of sludge quality and concentrations of potential substrates. Significant differences were found between sludge types for all but one of the variables examined (frequency of dividing cells). During a stable period of digestor operation, the average number of viable obligate thermophiles present in digested sludge (1.63 × 106 ml–1) was approximately 102-fold greater than in feed sludge (1.10 × 104 ml–1). Total numbers of bacteria were slightly greater in digested sludge (3.24 × 1010 ml–1) than in feed sludge (2.39 × 10 ml–10), as were viable counts of bacteria at incubation temperatures of 37°C and 55°C. Significant correlation was found between viable counts of bacteria at 37°C and 55°C for digested sludge, and 65°C and 55°C for feed sludge. The numbers of obligate thermophiles present and the total of bacteria present were related to the temperature and pH of the digested sludge and inversely related to the numbers ofEscherichia coli and coliforms present, which were not detected at temperatures greater than 50°C.  相似文献

The main structural and functional characteristics of bacterioplankton and bacteriobenthos of three lakes in the lower course of the Amur River are presented: the total number of bacteria (TNB), biomass, the numbers of bacteria of certain aerobic and anaerobic groups; the intensities of methanogenesis (MG), methane oxidation (MO), assimilation of 14C-compounds, sulfate reduction (SR); and gross estimate of organic matter decomposition (D). Depending on the reservoir type and the anthropogenic load, TNB constituted (2.27 to 16.1) × 106 cells/ml in water and (1.06 to 10.35) × 109cells/cm3 in sediments; MO was 0 to 0.28 ml CH4/(l day) in water and 0 to 8.4 ml CH4/(dm3 day) in sediments; MG in sediments was 0.001 to 40 ml CH4/(dm3 day); SR varied from 0.001 to 24.8 mg S/(dm3 day); D was 0.3 to 25 g C/(m2 day) in water and 0.2 to 4.9 g C/(m2 day) in sediments. The role of anaerobic microbial processes of organic matter decomposition was shown to increase with an increase in the anthropogenic load, attaining 95% of the total D in the ecosystem of an accumulating pond.  相似文献

Phosphorus removal by ponds receiving polluted water from non-point sources   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Phosphorus discharged into the water column of lakes, streams, reservoirs, and ponds is either assimilated by algae or retained by the sediment. A laboratory study was conducted using intact sediment-water columns obtained from three ponds to measure their capacity to assimilate P. Phosphorus retention by these systems was determined at two P levels (2 and 10 mg PL–1 or equivalent to an area loading of 26 and 130 g cm–2). The potential P removal rates were 20.4, 28.8 and 30.8 g P CM–2 day–1 for PSF (pond adjacent to septic fields), PP(pond adjacent to a pasture), and PAF (pond adjacent to agricultural farm land), respectively. Longer residence time was needed for P removal at high P loading (10 mg PL–1) than at low P loading (2 mg P L–1). At high P loading, 76–82% of the floodwater P was removed within 10 days. All sediments showed a greater sorption capacity under reduced conditions than under oxidized conditions. At the P levels evaluated, pond sediments functioned as net sinks for water column P.  相似文献

Geochemical investigations of interstitial waters from the Salton Sea, CA reveal evidence of concentrated brines in the sediments underlying the lakes two basins. The brines are likely caused by the gradual dissolution of evaporite deposits. The chemical composition of the brine in the northern basin is dominated by magnesium and sulfate and differs from the southern basin where the dominant components are sodium and chloride. Sediment depth distributions of major ions and porosity indicate diffusion of salts from the sediments into the overlying waters in both basins. Benthic fluxes have been calculated for the four most abundant ions: magnesium, sodium, sulfate and chloride. For the northern basin we calculate diffusive fluxes of 3.7 × 10–2, 8.2 × 10–2, 44 × 10–2, and 5.4 × 10–2 g cm–2 yr–1 for magnesium, sodium, sulfate and chloride, respectively. For the southern basin we calculate diffusive fluxes of 0.9 × 10–2, 9.7 × 10–2, 6.9 × 10–2, and 25 × 10–2 g cm–2 yr–1 for these same ions. By scaling up our results we estimate the salinity flux from the sediment to the water column to be between 3.6 × 104 and 3.6 × 105metric tons per year, equivalent to 1–10% of the riverine input. These results are important for developing strategies to combat rising salinity in the Salton Sea, CA.  相似文献

Bacterial abundance and the rates of sulfate reduction (SR) and total organic matter decomposition (Dtotal) were studied in the bottom sediments of nine lakes in the vicinity of Vilnius (Lithuania) during the ice-free seasons of 2006–2009. During the spring mixing of the water, aerobic processes of organic matter decomposition prevailed in the bottom sediments of most lakes, while anaerobic processes predominated (up to 80–90% Dtotal) in summer and early autumn. SR rates in the bottom sediments made up 0.16–2.6 and 0.09–2.0 mg S2?/(dm3 day) for the medium-depth and shallow lakes, respectively. The highest numbers of sulfate-reducing bacteria (up to 106 cells/cm3) and SR rates were observed in summer. SR rate in mediumdepth lakes increased with development of anaerobic conditions at the bottom and elevated sulfate concentrations (up to 96.0 mg/dm3). In shallow lakes, where O2 concentration at the bottom was at least 6.7 mg/L, SR rates increased with temperature and inflow of fresh organic matter, especially during cyanobacterial blooms. The average SR rates in the bottom sediments of the lakes of urbanized areas were 4 times higher than in the shallow lakes of protected areas. Accumulation of organic matter and its intensive decomposition during summer may enhance the processes of secondary eutrophication of these small and shallow lakes.  相似文献

Lake Khubsugul phytoplankton is dominated by Diatoms and Chlorococcales. Its algal flora is rather peculiar, but lacks Baikalian endemics.Primary production ranges from 2 to 5 mg C m–3 d–1. Total bacteria in the open water is 150–200 × 103 cells ml–1.Predominant in numbers and biomass throughout the year are two pelagial species of Copepoda — the endemic Mixodiaptomus kozhovi Step., and Cyclops abyssorum Sars.The bottom fauna consists of cold stenothermic invertebrates, mostly Chironomidae. In biomass, they rank only third, however, after Gammaridae and Mollusca. The average zoobenthos biomass of the lake is 5.5g m–2.  相似文献

Sediment and peat accumulation rates as well as heavy metal fluxes are examined in Scandinavian lakes, marine coasts and peatlands. Modern accumulation rates are determined using Pb-210 and other chronological tools. Mean deposition rates in the past 150 ± 20 yrs are 3–95, 40–190 and 1–5 mg·cm–2·yr–1 for lakes, marine coasts and peatlands respectively. The Pb-210 fluxes at the investigated sites are quite variable. The lowest values are found for peatlands 0.04–0.20 pCi·cm–2·yr–1 while coastal marine environments showed 0.35–0.70 pCi·cm–2·yr–1. A wide range of variation of Pb-210 fluxes is obtained for the studied lake sediments 0.01–0.51 pCi·cm–2·yr–1.The chronological records of Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd and Hg show that heavy metal fluxes are much higher in coastal marine areas. Inland lakes and ombrotrophic peat-bogs indicate that Pb is introduced exclusively through the atmosphere and decrease exponentially from South to North Scandinavia. However, the other heavy metals are transported to freshwater systems by different hydrologic and atmospheric processes. Zn and Fe exhibit some correlation with lake-drainage area.  相似文献

The qualitative and quantitative composition of the Chaetoceros Ehr. species was studied in Amursky Bay (Sea of Japan) from January 1996 until May 1998. In all, 30 species, 1 variety, and 1 form of this genus were registered. The species Chaetoceros occurred in plankton throughout the year at a water temperature of –1.8–25°C and a salinity of 11–35. The numbers of Chaetoceros species varied between 100 and 1071000 cells/l, and the biomass varied between 0.9 × 10–3 and 3.3 g/m3. The numbers were maximum in summer and minimum in the beginning of spring. The Chaetoceros species comprised 45–70 and 5–18% (winter), 68–98 and 65–95% (spring), 50% (summer), and 20% (autumn) of the total phytoplankton numbers and biomass. Six dominant species and 1 variety of Chaetoceros were found. Seasonal complexes formed by the Chaetoceros species were identified and described.  相似文献

In 1980, 1982 and 1984–1987 the total count of bacteria (TC), the number of saprophytic bacteria (plate count, PC), total Coliforms and Enterococci were determined at 22 to 30 sampling sites in the pelagial of Lake Peipsi-Pihkva. Bacterioplankton production was investigated seasonally at two locations from May to November 1985–1987. Eleven inflows and the outflowing River Narva were studied three times in the vegetation period 1985–1987 and in winter 1987.The average TC was highest in L. Pihkva (4.3 × 106 cells ml–1), lower in L. Lämmijärv (3.9 × 106 cells ml–1) and the lowest in the northern part of L. Peipsi (2.2 × 106 cells ml–1). According to these data, L. Pihkva and L. Lämmijärv were similar to typical Estonian eutrophic lakes. L. Peipsi had mesotrophic features with a tendency to eutrophy in its southern part.The numbers of saprophytic bacteria (PC) in L. Pihkva and L. Lämmijärv fluctuated from 110 to 360 cells ml–1, in L. Peipsi from 98 to 290 cells ml–1, and up to 5400 and 5900 cells ml–1 in the mouths of the Rivers Velikaja and Suur Emajõgi, respectively. The average production value per vegetation period was 37.9 g C m–2.The numbers of Coliforms and Enterococci indicated that the pelagial was in a good sanitary state. Enterococci and high total Coliform numbers (up to 1000 per 100 ml) were determined at the mouths of the Rivers Suur Emajõgi and Velikaja.In comparison with the early 1960s, 1.5–2.0-fold increase in the total amount of bacteria in the 1980s was revealed in the southern more eutrophic regions of L. Peipsi-Pihkva where the fluctuation of parameters was greater.  相似文献
