Tensile studies on cuticle of different chitin fibre architecture indicate that the intimate relationship between physical stiffness and the extent of chemical tanning holds for those cuticles which are mechanically isotropic in their surface planes, but not for those which are mechanically anisotropic.  相似文献

A common structural pattern (as observed under the SEM) in the main body of sectioned sclerites of the family Alcyoniidae, and octocorals in general, is the arrangement of acicular crystals in concentric layers. The crystals roughly follow the direction of the spicule axis, however, the sectioned tubercles of large Sinularia spicules have the acicular crystals oriented in the direction of the tubercles (i.e. perpendicular to the spicule axis), contrary to the sectioned tubercles of Sarcophyton and Lobophytum spicules. They reveal some rod-like structures, furcating the acute processes at the top of the tubercles. Sectioned small, club-like Sinularia sclerites show numerous tiny acicular crystals, oriented with their long axes at a fairly constant degree of inclination around a central axis. SEM studies of sectioned Cladiella sclerites show a granulate structure organized in concentric layers, but lacking acicular crystals. The Silurian Atractosella cataractaca show important characters in common with Recent alcyoniid species.  相似文献

The elytral base sclerites (= sclerites located at the articular region between the forewing and thorax in Coleoptera) of selected taxa were examined and homologized. Although the elytral base sclerites are highly modified compared to the wing base sclerites of the other neopterans, they can be homologized by using the conservative wing flapping and folding lines as landmarks. A reduction of the first axillary sclerite was identified as a general trend of the elytral base sclerites, although the sclerite usually has a very important function to mediate flight power from the notum to the wing. This result indicates that the functional constraint against the basal sclerites is relaxed because of the lack of an ability to produce flight power by elytra. In contrast, the elytral folding system formed by the basal sclerites is well retained, which probably occurs because proper wing folding is a key for the shelter function of the elytra. The elytral base sclerites apparently contain more homoplasies than the serially homologous hindwing base sclerites of Coleoptera, which suggests that the structure is less useful for higher-level systematics. However, the faster evolutionary rate of the elytral base sclerites suggests there is potential for studying the lower-level phylogeny of Coleoptera.  相似文献

The marginal hooks and anchors have been digested from the haptors of the monogeneans Gyrodactylus salaris and Discocotyle sagittata. These structures then can be measured and drawn more accurately than those surrounded by haptoral tissue. The technique also facilitates the study of isolated hooks with SEM. The results of studies using this digestion technique are presented.  相似文献

A new method of three-dimensional (3-D) analysis of sclerotised structures of monogenoids was performed by processing z-series images using 3D-Doctor. Z-series were obtained from Gomori's trichrome-stained specimens of marine and freshwater monogenoids under laser scanning confocal fluorescence microscopy. Measurements obtained from 3-D images were then compared with those from 2-D images taken from both flattened and unflattened specimens. Data comparison demonstrated that 3-D morphometry allowed avoidance of over-estimation due to deformation and the reduction of errors associated with different spatial orientations. Moreover, study of 3-D images permitted observation of morphological details that are not detectable in 2-D representations.  相似文献

The gross morphology of soft coral surface sclerites has been studied for taxonomic purposes for over a century. In contrast, sclerites located deep in the core of colonies have not received attention. Some soft coral groups develop massive colonies, in these organisms tissue depth can limit light penetration and circulation of internal fluids affecting the physiology of coral tissues and their symbiotic algae; such conditions have the potential to create contrasting calcifying conditions. To test this idea, we analyzed the crystal structure of sclerites extracted from different colony regions in selected specimens of zooxanthellate and azooxanthellate soft corals with different colony morphologies, these were: Sarcophyton mililatensis, Sinularia capillosa, Sinularia flexibilis, Dendronephthya sp. and Ceeceenus levis. We found that the crystals that constitute polyp sclerites differ from those forming stalk sclerites. We also observed different crystals in sclerites located at various depths in the stalk including signs of sclerite breakdown in the stalk core region. These results indicate different modes of calcification within each colonial organism analyzed and illustrate the complexity of organisms usually regarded as repetitive morphological and functional units. Our study indicates that soft corals are ideal material to study natural gradients of calcification conditions. J. Morphol. 2011. © 2011 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Early Cambrian lobopodian sclerites and associated fossils from Kazakhstan   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

A low diversity fossil assemblage dominated by Mongolitubulus spines, from the Early Cambrian Geres Member of the Shabakhty Formation at Koksu, Malyi Karatau, Kazakhstan, enables identification of its sclerite variability within the scleritome. No other sclerotised structures could be matched with the spines, indicating that these were the only sclerotised part of the body and were periodically shed. The prominent spines of Mongolitubulus have a scale–like external ornamentation and fibrous internal structure. Possibly they armed the body of a lobopodian similar to Xenusion . The Mongolitubulus spines belong to a series of Cambrian phosphatic fossils, the other end members of which are sclerites of Microdictyon , the second most abundant component of the Koksu assemblage. The latter superficially resemble schizochroal trilobite eyes, but in life covered the dorso–lateral sides of the body segments, as is evident from complete specimens from the Chinese Chengjiang locality. A pair of sclerites of Microdictyon , representing uncompleted exuviation, from Koksu show that each hole originally contained a non–phosphatised lenticular body. This makes a compound eye nature of the Microdictyon sclerites likely, and even their homology with arthropod eyes cannot be excluded.  相似文献

A high degree of automation of the wingstroke in the Heteroptera has resulted in the simplification of the axillae and associated musculature. The functions of the indirect, asynchronous flight muscles are summarised from previous investigations and original work. Functions are suggested for the tonic muscles but await confirmation by electrophysiological research.
The deformations seen in heteropteran wings can be explained in terms of muscularly generated and aerodynamic forces. Unsteady aerodynamic benefits of such deformations, though unproven, may be of primary importance. Torsion, camber change and transverse flexion are all candidates for the generation of unsteady effects. The 'near clap and peel' seen at pronation has been described in other insects by Ellington (1984a), and it seems likely that it serves the same purpose in Heteroptera.
Heteroptera, like many other insects, show wing-tip flexion. Among several possible functions, inertial stress reduction is shown to be important.  相似文献

A nondestructive protocol for preparing specimens of Monogenoidea for both alpha-taxonomic studies and reconstruction of 3-dimensional structure is presented. Gomori's trichrome, a stain commonly used to prepare whole-mount specimens of monogenoids for taxonomic purposes, is used to provide fluorescence of genital spines, the copulatory organ, accessory piece, squamodisc, anchors, hooks, bars, and clamps under laser scanning confocal microscopy.  相似文献

Cuticle from the metathoracic femur of adult locusts (Locusta migratoria) is characterized with respect to changes in water content and in protein extractability during maturation. The swelling behaviour and extractability of fully-sclerotized cuticle are compared to those of chemically-modified, unsclerotized cuticle. It is concluded that although dehydration may contribute to the stabilization of cuticle, it cannot account for the observed differences. The properties of mature cuticle can best be explained by the assumption that covalent cross-links are present between protein molecules.  相似文献

Our knowledge of how genes act on the nervous system in response to the environment to generate behavioral plasticity is limited. A number of recent advancements in this area concern food‐related behaviors and a specific gene family called foraging (for), which encodes a cGMP‐dependent protein kinase (PKG). The desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) is notorious for its destructive feeding and long‐term migratory behavior. Locust phase polyphenism is an extreme example of environmentally induced behavioral plasticity. In response to changes in population density, locusts dramatically alter their behavior, from solitary and relatively sedentary behavior to active aggregation and swarming. Very little is known about the molecular and genetic basis of this striking behavioral phenomenon. Here we initiated studies into the locust for gene by identifying, cloning, and studying expression of the gene in the locust brain. We determined the phylogenetic relationships between the locust PKG and other known PKG proteins in insects. FOR expression was found to be confined to neurons of the anterior midline of the brain, the pars intercerebralis. Our results suggest that differences in PKG enzyme activity are correlated to well‐established phase‐related behavioral differences. These results lay the groundwork for functional studies of the locust for gene and its possible relations to locust phase polyphenism. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Locust leafminer, Odontota dorsalis (Thunberg), activity was observed for 2 yr on 70 black locust, Robinia pseudoacacia L., trees grown from seed collected from its native range. Four black locust seedlings from Tennessee had low numbers of eggs, larvae, pupae, and mines, and were selected for clonal propagation. These clonal propagules were resistant to locust leafminers collected from three different counties in Maryland. This resistance was also observed in controlled choice and no-choice tests in outdoor screen houses. Adults showed different ovipositional preferences for black locust trees from different seed sources, which were reflected in lower numbers of larvae, pupae, and mines in resistant clones. It was concluded that antixenosis and antibiosis were involved in the mechanisms of resistance to the locust leafminer in black locust.  相似文献

Abstract Segment 9 of male Raphidioptera, comprising tergite, sternite, gonocoxites, gonostyli and gonapophyses, is a benchmark for homologies in the male and female terminalia of the three Neuropterida orders Raphidioptera, Megaloptera and Neuroptera. The segments relating to genitalia are 9, 10 and 11 in males and 7, 8 and 9 in females. Results from holomorphological and recent molecular cladistic analyses of Neuropterida agree in supporting the sister‐group relationships between: (1) the Raphidioptera and the clade Megaloptera + Neuroptera, and (2) the suborder Nevrorthiformia and all other Neuroptera. The main discrepancy between the results of these studies is the nonmonophyly of the suborder Hemerobiiformia in the molecular analysis. The monophyly of the Megaloptera (which has been repeatedly questioned) is further corroborated by a hitherto overlooked ground pattern autapomorphy: the presence of eversible sacs within the complex of the fused gonocoxites 11 in Corydalidae and Sialidae. The recently discovered paired complex of gonocoxites 10 (parameres) in Nipponeurorthus (Nevrorthidae) indicates that the curious apex of sternite 9 of Nevrorthus and Austroneurorthus is the amalgamation of the sclerites of gonocoxites 10 with sternite 9, interpreted as synapomorphic. In the molecular study, the Nevrorthidae, Sisyridae and Osmylidae branch off in consecutive splitting events, a result that is supported by the analysis of male genital sclerites reported here. Extraordinary parallel apomorphies (e.g. excessive enlargement and modification of gonocoxites 10 ending in a thread‐like ‘penisfilum’) in derived representatives of Coniopterygidae, Berothidae, Rhachiberothidae and Mantispidae corroborate the dilarid clade of the morphological analysis and leads us to hypothesize a sister‐group relationship of the Coniopterygidae with the dilarid clade. A re‐interpretation of the tignum of Chrysopidae as gonocoxites 11 means that the structure previously called the gonarcus represents the fused gonocoxites 9. In Hemerobiidae, the corresponding sclerite is consequently also homologized as fused gonocoxites 9. The enlargement of the lateral wings of the gonocoxites in both families is interpreted as a synapomorphy. Excessive enlargement of gonostyli 11 in the Polystoechotid clade and Myrmeleontiformia supports a sister‐group relationship of these two clades. The occurrence of certain serial homologues of female genitalia structures (gonocoxites and gonapophyses), such as the digitiform processus together with the flat appendices in segment 8 of certain Myrmeleontidae, or the wart‐like processus together with the flat circular sclerites in segment 7 of certain Berothidae, as well as the presence of gonocoxites 8 as pseudosternites in certain Nemopteridae and Coniopterygidae, are probably character reversals. The digitiform processus of tergite 9 (pseudogonocoxites) in Rhachiberothidae and Austroberothella (Berothidae) are either independently developed acquisitions with a function in oviposition, or are homologous sclerites, possibly of epipleurite origin.  相似文献

The oviducal muscles of the locust, Locusta migratoria, contract in a spontaneous and rhythmic fashion when isolated from the central nervous system. Hemolymph of ovipositing females, when added to isolated locust oviducts, altered the spontaneous contractility of the oviduct. This response was not evident after addition of hemolymph from a nonovipositing female and was still present after addition of the α-aminergic receptor antagonist, phentolamine. Oviducts in which mature eggs were present responded to homogenates of the corpus cardiacum by increasing both the frequency and amplitude of muscular contraction, whereas oviducts devoid of eggs showed no response. Extracts of ventral nerve cord also increased the spontaneous activity of the oviduct musculature. Although the muscles of the oviduct responded to homogenates of the brain, this response differed in two ways from the response due to corpus cardiacum homogenates. First, oviducts devoid of mature eggs responded to brain homogenates; and second, the response caused by the brain homogenates could be eliminated by the addition of 1 μM phenoxybenzamine. The significance of these results is discussed.  相似文献
