This paper revisits and old question “Beer or wine?” as regards the potential alcoholic drinks consumed by prehistoric societies in southeastern Europe. Archaeobotanical remains of sprouted cereal grains as well as cereal fragments from the Bronze Age sites of Archondiko and Argissa on mainland Greece, presented here for the first time, provide strong indications for the making of something similar to beer in late 3rd millennium bc Greece, opening up a series of new questions about the recipes followed in this process and their origins. Beyond the recipes themselves, the paper highlights a range of available options as regards alcoholic drinks in Bronze Age Greece, beer and wine, offering thus a more detailed approach to preferences and possible identities reflected in the choice of alcoholic drink among prehistoric societies inhabiting the southernmost tip of the Balkan Peninsula, the Aegean and mainland Greece.  相似文献

Hosts represent a limited resource for the developing offspring of parasitic insects laying eggs in or on spatially discrete resources like fruits, seeds, or other insects. The quality of hosts differs with respect to the value and amount of resources they provide for the feeding larvae. Accordingly, the size of a clutch of eggs laid on a given host should be a function of host quality, because severe competition between developing larvae can lead to increased mortality and/or decreased size of the offspring, both causing a fitness loss for the offspring and the mother. Therefore, females should be selected for the ability to estimate host quality and to adjust their clutch size accordingly. Using the parasitic wasp Nasonia vitripennis (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) this study investigated the respective contribution of developmental mortality of offspring vs. the clutch size decision of the mother as a determinant of final offspring emergence per host. In addition, taking offspring size into account, the study examined the fitness consequences of female oviposition decisions. Developmental mortality was very low in all quality classes of hosts except previously frozen and thus dead host pupae. Females laid reduced clutch sizes on dead, previously parasitized, and smaller hosts. In contrast to offspring number, offspring size did not differ between host qualities. We conclude that females are able to sense the quality of a host and adjust the number of eggs they lay to mitigate larval competition.  相似文献

Health care reform strategies proposed by provincial governments include decentralized funding and increased public participation in decision making. These proposals do not give details as to the public participation process, and a number of questions have been raised by the experience of some communities. Which citizens should form the decision-making group? What information do they need? What kinds of decisions should they make? What level of participation should they have? The results of a survey by Abelson and associates (see pages 403 to 412 of this issue) challenge the assumption that "communities" are willing to participate in health-care and social-service decision making. Willingness varied according to the composition of the groups polled, and participants'' support for traditional decision makers increased after the complexities of the decision-making process were discussed. However, whereas their study measured willingness to participate at one point in time only, experience gained from Ontario''s Better Beginnings, Better Futures project indicates that, given sufficient time, "ordinary" citizens are willing and can acquire the skills needed to decide how resources should be allocated for social services.  相似文献

Members of a social group have to make collective decisions in order to synchronise their activities. In a shared consensus decision, all group members can take part in the decision whereas in an unshared consensus decision, one individual, usually a dominant member of the group, takes the decision for the rest of the group. It has been suggested that the type of decision-making of a species could be influenced by its social style. To investigate this further, we studied collective movements in two species with opposed social systems, the Tonkean macaque (Macaca tonkeana) and the rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta). From our results, it appears that the decision to move is the result of the choices and actions of several individuals in both groups. However, this consensus decision involved nearly all group members in Tonkean macaques whereas dominant and old individuals took a prominent role in rhesus macaques. Thus, we suggest that Tonkean macaques display equally shared consensus decisions to move, whereas in the same context rhesus macaque exhibit partially shared consensus decisions. Such a difference in making a collective decision might be linked to the different social systems of the two studied species.  相似文献

Conservation efforts and emergency medicine face comparable problems: how to use scarce resources wisely to conserve valuable assets. In both fields, the process of prioritising actions is known as triage. Although often used implicitly by conservation managers, scientists and policymakers, triage has been misinterpreted as the process of simply deciding which assets (e.g. species, habitats) will not receive investment. As a consequence, triage is sometimes associated with a defeatist conservation ethic. However, triage is no more than the efficient allocation of conservation resources and we risk wasting scarce resources if we do not follow its basic principles.  相似文献

1. Density, maturation and survival of female bank vole ( Clethrionomys glareolus ) in the northern taiga of Finnish Lapland were studied using long-term capture–mark–recapture data from two large grids, one food-addition grid and one control grid, in 1982–94.
2. The density on the food grid was consistently higher than the density on the control grid.
3. Females born early in the breeding season usually matured, except at very high densities. Those born later in the summer season commonly delayed maturation to the following spring.
4. Winter survival of sub-adult (having delayed maturation) females was significantly higher than survival of adult (breeding) females. However, empirical values of sub-adult and adult survival, as well as difference between them, were not consistent with survival values assumed in theoretical models on optimal deferred breeding.
5. There was a density-dependent relationship between the maturation rate of young voles and the density of already established breeding females (both bank voles and all Clethrionomys together; C. rutilus and C. rufocanus occasionally occurred on the study grids). This density dependence was different for the two grids (weaker on the food-addition grid).
6. These findings are discussed within an evolutionary context: we have, on the basis of these findings, no evidence suggesting that the observed delayed maturation represents an evolutionary optimal strategy. Background

Little is known about lay understanding and decision making in response to colic. Horse-owners/carers are key to identifying colic and initiating veterinary intervention. Understanding how owners think and act in relation to colic could assist veterinary surgeons in tailoring information about colic with the aim of improving colic outcomes.

Methods

A mixed methods approach was employed including qualitative in-depth interviews and a cross-sectional questionnaire. Qualitative data were analysed using Grounded theory to conceptualise processes involved in horse-owner management of colic. Following this, a cross-sectional survey was designed to test these concepts. Cluster analysis explored the role of the human-horse relationship upon colic management strategies.

Results

Fifteen horse-owners with a range of colic experience participated in the interviews. A theoretical conceptual model was developed and described how horse-owners’ recognised, assessed and responded to colic. Three main management strategies were used including ‘wait and see’, ‘lay treatments’ and ‘seek veterinary assistance’. Actions in response to colic were moderated by owners’ experience of colic and interpretation of the severity of colic signs. A postal questionnaire gathered data from 673 horse-owners from the North-West of the UK. The majority (605, 89.9%) of respondents were female. Cluster analysis revealed 5 meaningful groups of horse-owners based upon assessment of questionnaire items on the human-horse relationship. These groups included 2 professional and 3 amateur owner typologies. There were differences in the responses to some questionnaire items among the identified groups.

Conclusions

This study describes lay understanding and management of colic among a population of horse-owners from the North-West of the UK. The information may serve as a basis upon which to tailor existing programmes designed to educate owners about colic management strategies, and may inform veterinarians’ interactions with horse-owners.

ObjectiveTo determine patients'' preferences for a shared or directed style of consultation in the decision making part of the general practice consultation.DesignStructured interview, with video vignettes of acted consultations.Setting5 practices in Lothian, Scotland.Participants410 patients (adults and adults accompanying children) attending surgery appointments.ResultsPatients varied in their preference for involvement in decision making in the consultation. Under multiple regression analysis, patients'' preference was found to be independently predicted by the problem viewed (patients presented with physical problems preferred a directed approach), patients'' age (patients aged 61 or older were more likely to prefer the directed approach), social class (social classes I and II were more likely to prefer the shared approach), and smoking status (smokers more likely to prefer the shared approach). Those patients who were able to answer (or who thought their doctor''s style similar to those in the vignettes) were more likely to describe their own doctor''s style as similar to their preferred style. No major association in preference was found with sex, frequency of attendance, or perceived chronic ill health.ConclusionPatients may vary in their desire for involvement in decision making in consultations. Although this variation seems to depend on the presenting problem, age, social class, and smoking status, these associations are not absolute, with large minorities in each group. Doctors need the skills, knowledge of their patients, and the time to determine on which occasions, with which illnesses, and at which level their patients wish to be involved in decision making.  相似文献

The wine lactic acid bacteria Leuconostoc oenos OENO and Lactobacillus buchneri CUC-3 catabolize L-arginine to ornithine and ammonia as major end-products, with 1 mole of arginine converted into 2 moles of ammonia and 1 mole of ornithine. Some citrulline was also excreted into the medium. The excreted citrulline was reassimilated and catabolized by the lactobacillus strain, though not by the leuconostoc. Urea was not detected during arginine degradation. The activities of all three enzymes of the arginine deiminase pathway (arginine deiminase, ornithine transcarbamylase and carbamate kinase) increased significantly over time in the presence of arginine. On the other hand, arginase and urease activities were undetectable in cell extracts of cultures grown in the presence of arginine. The results show that the arginine deiminase pathway, and not the arginase-urease pathway, is the route for arginine degradation in wine lactic acid bacteria.  相似文献
