This study aimed at simulating different degrees of winter warming and at assessing its potential effects on ciliate succession and grazing-related patterns. By using indoor mesocosms filled with unfiltered water from Kiel Bight, natural light and four different temperature regimes, phytoplankton spring blooms were induced and the thermal responses of ciliates were quantified. Two distinct ciliate assemblages, a pre-spring and a spring bloom assemblage, could be detected, while their formation was strongly temperature-dependent. Both assemblages were dominated by Strobilidiids; the pre-spring bloom phase was dominated by the small Strobilidiids Lohmaniella oviformis, and the spring bloom was mainly dominated by large Strobilidiids of the genus Strobilidium. The numerical response of ciliates to increasing food concentrations showed a strong acceleration by temperature. Grazing rates of ciliates and copepods were low during the pre-spring bloom period and high during the bloom ranging from 0.06 (Δ0°C) to 0.23 day−1 (Δ4°C) for ciliates and 0.09 (Δ0°C) to 1.62 day−1 (Δ4°C) for copepods. During the spring bloom ciliates and copepods showed a strong dietary overlap characterized by a wide food spectrum consisting mainly of Chrysochromulina sp., diatom chains and large, single-celled diatoms. We have studied the seasonal dynamics of abundance and feeding characteristics of three species of calanoid copepods (Acartia spp., Centropages hamatus and Temora longicornis) in the White Sea from the surface water layer (0–10 m), in order to assess their role in the pelagic food web and to determine the major factors governing their population dynamics during the productive season. These species dominated in the upper water layer (0–10 m) from June through September, producing up to 3 generations per year. Data on the food spectra revealed all species to be omnivorous; but some inter- and intraspecific differences were observed. Generally, copepods consumed diatoms, dinoflagellates and microzooplankton. The omnivory index ‘UC’ (i.e., fatty acid unsaturation coefficient) varied from 0.2 to 0.6, which implied ingestion of phytoplankton. The different degree of selectivity on the same food items by the studied species was observed, and therefore, successful surviving strategy with minimal overlapping could be assumed. In total, the populations of the three studied copepod species grazed up to 2.15 g C m−2 day−1 and released up to 0.68 g C m−2 day−1 in faecal pellets. They consumed up to 50% of particulate organic carbon, or up to 85% of phytoplankton standing stock (in terms of Chl. a), and thus played a significant role in the transformation of particulate organic matter. Seasonal changes in abundance of the studied species depended mostly on water temperature in the early summer, but were also affected by food availability (Chl. a concentration) during the productive season.  相似文献

Recent technological advances have led to the discovery that free-living, planktonic protozoa are ubiquitous in nature and appear to be important components of pelagic food webs (e.g., fluorescent straining, flow cytometry). Despite this, limited information exists tying their seasonality to rate processes that drive succession patterns. The abundance, and seasonal growth and grazing loss of an entire protozoan assemblage were evaluated in Lake Michigan. The protozoan assemblage was species-rich (100 taxa) and abundant throughout the year in Lake Michigan. Nano-sized protozoa (Hnano and Pnano, <20 μm in size) ranged in abundance from 102 to 103 cells ml−1, while micro-protozoa (Hmicro and Pmico, >20 and <200 μm in size) ranged in abundance from 4 to 17 cells ml−1. The biomass of Hnano and Hmicro by itself represented more than 70–80% of crustacean zooplankton biomass, while Pnano and Pmicro constituted nearly 50% of phytoplankton biomass. Protozoa exhibited growth rates comparable to other components of the plankton in Lake Michigan, and some populations grew at rates similar to maximum rates determined in the laboratory (rates of 1–2 day−1). Overall, it appears that macro-zooplankton predation is a major loss factor counter-balancing growth with only small differences between the two rate processes (<0.1 day−1). Discrepancies between growth and grazing loss in the spring were likely attributed to sedimentation losses for larger species of tintinnids and dinoflagellates (Codonella, Tintinnidium, and Gymnodinium) that can account for their occurrence in the deep chlorophyll layer. In the summer, carnivory among similar sized species (Chromulina and small ciliates) may be additional loss factors impinging on the protozoan assemblage.  相似文献

Ingestion rates and selectivity of the Arctic pelagic amphipod Themisto libellula were studied experimentally in Kongsfjorden (Svalbard, 78°N) during the summer period. Feeding incubations were conducted on naturally occurring copepod communities at different concentrations ranging from 25 to 250 preys L−1. The ingestion rates increased with food availability from 1.3 to 17.7 preys ind−1 day−1, which corresponded to 0.3–11% of body carbon day−1. Despite the high prey concentration used in the experiments the satiation level was not reached. We suggested that T. libellula is able to take the maximum benefit from dense patches of preys, which represent a good adaptation to the high variability in food supply characteristic of polar environment. Copepodids stage III of Calanus spp. appeared to be the preferred preys of T. libellula. Smaller copepods such as Oithona similis and Pseudocalanus spp., were also selected but only when their relative abundance exceeded 25% of the total prey available. The potential predation impact of T. libellula is discussed in relation to the mesozooplankton small-scale patchiness and predator abundance.  相似文献

Trophodynamics and predation impact of the 2 dominant chaetognaths Eukrohnia hamata and Sagitta gazellae were investigated at 19 stations in the vicinity of the Prince Edward Islands and at a 24-h station occupied at the sub-Antarctic Front in late summer (April/May) 1996. During the entire investigation, the zooplankton assemblages were numerically dominated by copepods with densities ranging from 21 to 170 ind. m−3. Amongst the copepods, Clausocalanus brevipes, Metridia gerlachei and M. lucens dominated accounting for >90% of the total. Generally, chaetognaths were identified as the second most important group composing at times up to 30% (mean = 14.7%) of total zooplankton abundance. Of the two chaetognath species, E.␣hamata was generally numerically dominant. Gut content analysis showed that both chaetognath species are opportunistic predators generally feeding on the most abundant prey, copepods. No feeding patterns were evident during the 24-h station, suggesting that both species feed continuously. The feeding rates of E. hamata ranged from 0 to 0.50 prey ind. day−1 and between 0 and 0.90 prey ind. day−1 for S. gazellae. The maximum total predation impact of E. hamata was equivalent to 5.2% of the copepod standing stock or up to 103% of copepod production per day. For S. gazellae the predation impact was lower, reaching a level of 3.2% of the copepod standing stock or 63% of the daily copepod production. Chaetognaths can, therefore, be regarded as an important pelagic predator of the Prince Edward Islands subsystem. Received: 27 March 1997 / Accepted: 11 September 1997  相似文献

Water hyacinth productivity and detritus accumulation   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Water hyacinth [Eichhornia crassipes (Mart) Solms] productivity and detritus accumulation were evaluated in eutrophic lake water with and without added nutrients (fertilized and control reservoirs, respectively). Seasonal changes in plant productivity and detritus accumulation were determined at monthly intervals for one year. Significant differences were observed in plant productivity between seasons and nutrient additions. Seasonal plant productivity ranged from 1.9 to 23.1 mg (dry wt) ha−1 for the fertilized reservoir and −0.2 to 10.2 mg ha−1 for the control reservoir. Detritus accumulation was not significantly different between seasons or nutrient additions. Seasonal N assimilation by plants ranged from 34 to 242 kg N ha−1 for plants in the fertilized reservoir and < 0 to 104 kg N ha−1 for plants in the control reservoir. Annual net N recovered in detritus represented 21 and 28% of the total N removed by plants in the fertilized and control reservoirs, respectively. Net N loading to the reservoirs from detritus was 92 to 148 kg N ha−1 yr−1.  相似文献

This study focuses on selective feeding by developmental stages of two oceanic copepods, Calanus finmarchicus and Calanus helgolandicus from nauplii to adults. A mixture of four algal species of different biochemical composition, Prorocentrum nanum (dinoflagellate), Thalassiosira minima (diatom), Rhodomonas baltica (cryptophyte) and Dunaliella tertiolecta (chlorophyte), added in an equal biovolume, was used in three different experimental set-ups. In set-up 1 the algal species were present as single cells of similar size (14 μm). In set-up 2 the diatom T. minima was present in chains of two or three cells and was therefore larger than the other algae, while the biovolume of all species remained the same. In set-up 3, the diatom T. minima was excluded from the mixture. Feeding selectivity of the copepods was assessed in relation to the quality of the algal species expressed in terms of carbon and nitrogen content, fatty acid composition, and chain length of the diatom. The results show that younger stages and adult females of C. finmarchicus and C. helgolandicus did not show a preference for an algal species when the algae were of similar size. In the feeding experiments where the diatoms were offered as chains, both copepod species showed a selective behaviour only on the basis of algal size. Individual ingestion rates increased from 0.4 to 0.7 μg C day–1 for nauplii of both species to 5 μg C day–1 for adult females of C. helgolandicus to 12 μg C day–1 for C. finmarchicus. Individual filtration rates ranged from 5 ml day–1 for C. finmarchicus nauplii to 70–98 ml day–1 for adult females, and from 3 ml day–1 for C. helgolandicus nauplii to 35–46 ml day–1 for adult females. Ingestion and filtration rates per unit body carbon decreased gradually in both copepod species with increasing body carbon. The daily ingested amount of food decreased for C. finmarchicus from 124–134% of the body carbon for nauplii to 19% of the body carbon for adult females, and for C. helgolandicus from 117–137% of the body carbon for nauplii to 13–26% of the body carbon of adult females. The copepod Temora stylifera was fed with the pennate diatom Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima for 15 days. This diatom does not produce polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) but only synthesizes other oxylipins such as the hydroxyacid (5Z,8Z,11Z,13E,15S,17Z)-15-hydroxy-5,8,11,13,17-eicosapentaenoic acid (15S-HEPE). Effects of this monoalgal diet were compared to copepods fed with the PUA-producing diatom Skeletonema marinoi and the control dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum which does not produce any oxylipins. Both egg production and hatching success were negatively affected by the two diatoms compared to the control diet. Both diatoms also induced malformations in the offspring, with the number of malformed nauplii increasing dramatically with time. Malformed nauplii were apoptotic (TUNEL-positive) indicating imminent death. In terms of recruitment, only 4 healthy nauplii female−1 day−1 with S. marinoi and 9 healthy nauplii female−1 day−1 with P. delicatissima were produced during the 15-day experimental period. The results indicate that P. delicatissima induced negative effects comparable to those of S. marinoi even though it did not produce PUAs. This is the first study that tests the biological activity of oxylipins other than PUAs on copepod reproduction.  相似文献

A variable fraction of fecal pellets produced in the epipelagic layer is intercepted and retained before reaching the bottom. We assessed fecal pellet retention in the ice-covered Beaufort Sea in early February by comparing the shape and size-frequency distribution of pellets collected by a sediment trap moored at 210 m to that produced in vitro. Appendicularian ellipsoidal and copepod cylindrical pellets made up 75 and 24% of the flux (165 μg C m−2 day−1). In contrast, production (135 μg C m−2 day−1) was dominated by cylindrical pellets (93%). The vertical flux of cylindrical pellets at 210 m was attenuated by 70%. Pellets >120 μm in width, represented 42% of the production, but were not detected in the trap. Retention most likely resulted from coprorhexic feeding by copepods such as Metridia longa. Our observations suggest that the detritivore food web prevailing under the ice of the Arctic Ocean in winter is dominated by appendicularians feeding on pellets fragmented by copepods.  相似文献

Measurements of plankton community structure and trophic resourcespotentially available to planktonic copepods were made in the mangroveestuaries of six rivers in Northeastern Australia. The Pascoe, Claudie,Lockhart, McIvor and Daintree Rivers represent wet tropical systems on CapeYork, whereas the Haughton River estuary has restricted freshwater inflowbecause of a drier climate and freshwater diversion for agriculture. TheHaughton River was sampled approximately monthly between October 1992 andMay 1994, and had a mean abundance of zooplankton >37 μm of 200l−1 (range 60–500 l−1). The Cape Yorkrivers were sampled infrequently, and zooplankton abundances ranged between0.4 and 1400 l−1. The zooplankton of all rivers was dominatedby copepods, particularly representatives of the genus Oithona which werecharacteristic of a distinct mangrove fauna. Physical forcing influencedthe zooplankton of mangrove estuaries much more than the measured biologicalvariables. The water column was characterised by high concentrations ofparticulate matter, up to 3.3 mg l−1 C and 1.1 mgl−1 N, of low food quality (as indicated by the C:N ratio).Phytoplankton biomass (as chlorophyll a) in all six rivers was on averagefour-fold greater than in neighbouring coastal waters (1.1–12.6μg l−1), and 25% of this chlorophyll a wasderived from cells >10 μm, and thus potentially available tocopepods. The degree of mixing, determined by the combination of tidal stateand the extent of freshwater input, appears to drive both the quantity andquality of particulate material available to higher consumers and thedistribution of zooplankton communities within mangrove estuaries. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Food preferences of tanypodinae larvae (Diptera: Chironomidae)   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Analyses of the gut contents of larvae of three species of Tanypodinae, collected from four sites in north-east England and Scotland, invariably showed small particles (1–10 µm2), predominantly of detritus, to be more abundant than large particles (10–100 µm2), mostly algae and diatoms. No animal remains, such as carapaces, head capsules and chaetae, or vascular plant fragments were found in any of the intestines. In contrast, food-choice and growth experiments suggested that animal food (particularly Tubificidae and Chironominae larvae) was important in the tanypod diet. In the food-choice experiments, six different foods offered to small (4–7 mm long) and to large (8–12 mm long) larvae of Procladius choreus Meigen, were chosen in the following order: live Tubificidae spp.; detritus; live Chironominae larvae; a mixture of algae and diatoms; live Ostracoda spp.; and live Cladocera spp. However, when the results of the individual choices were examined, it was clear that the small larvae had consumed greater amounts of the small types of food (i.e. detritus, algae and diatoms) in comparison to the large larvae. In the growth experiment, those larvae of P. choreus reared solely on Tubificidae, detritus or Chironominae larvae thrived, while those fed on algae and diatoms, ostracods or cladocerans grew more slowly and fewer survived the experimental period. It was concluded that although Tanypodinae larvae are primarily predators with definite food preferences in ideal foraging conditions, in adverse conditions they will utilize a range of available stand-by foods, the most important of which appears to be detritus.  相似文献

Growth, biomass and production of two small barbs (Barbus humilis and Barbus tanapelagius) and their role in the food web of Lake Tana were investigated. From length–frequency distribution of trawl monitoring surveys growth coefficient, Φ′ values were estimated at 3.71–4.17 for B. humilis and 3.70–4.14 for B. tanapelagius, respectively. Values for B. humilis were confirmed in pond experiments. Mean biomass of the small barbs was 13.3 kg fresh wt ha−1, with B. humilis being most abundant in the littoral and sub-littoral zones, whereas B. tanapelagius was most abundant in the sub-littoral and pelagic zones. The two small barbs had a production of 53 kg fresh wt ha−1 year−1. Although their P/B ratios of about 4.0 were relatively high for small cyprinids, both their biomass and production were low in comparison with other small fish taxa in other tropical lakes. Of the zooplankton production only about 29% was consumed by the small barbs. However, they did not utilize calanoid copepods, which were responsible for approximately 57% of the zooplankton production and it is likely that small barb production was food limited during certain periods of the year. Piscivorous labeobarbs consumed about 56% of the small barbs production annually, but additionally, Clarias gariepinus, and many bird species were also preying on them. Therefore, limitation of Barbus production by predation during certain periods in the year cannot be excluded.  相似文献

Juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks, Sphyrna lewini, are apex predators within their nursery ground in Kāne‘ohe Bay, Ō‘ahu, Hawai‘i. Understanding daily maintenance requirements of a top-level predator is an important step toward understanding its ecological impact within a nursery ecosystem. Juvenile S. lewini were fed a range of daily ration levels to examine the effect of feeding rate on growth and gross conversion efficiency. The von Bertalanffy growth model yielded the best fit to the data, predicting a maintenance ration of 115 kJ kg−1 day−1 (3.4% body weight (BW) day−1) and a maximum growth rate of 38 kJ kg−1 day−1. This finding is in agreement with the previous prediction of high energetic requirements for S. lewini. In combination with the hypothesized food limitation within Kāne‘ohe Bay, this result may explain the observed high mortality rates of S. lewini. Gross conversion efficiency, K 1, ranged from −36% to 34%, with maximum efficiency at feeding levels of 5.1% BW day−1. The growth conversion efficiency of S.␣lewini is similar to that of lemon sharks and teleost fishes. Growth rates of juvenile S. lewini are possibly restricted by their high metabolic rate, limited food availability and foraging inexperience. By directly examining the effect of ration size on growth and food conversion, it was possible to resolve discrepancies between earlier studies, which used respiratory metabolism and gut content analyses.  相似文献

Salinization of freshwater bodies due to anthropogenic activity is currently a very serious problem in Mexico. One of the consequences may be changes in the rotifer and cladoceran populations, both of which are generally abundant in freshwater bodies. Under laboratory conditions we evaluated the effect of different salt (sodium chloride) concentrations (0–4.5 g l−1) on the population dynamics of ten freshwater zooplankton species (rotifers: Anuraeopsis fissa, Brachionus calyciflorus, B. havanaensis, B. patulus and B. rubens; cladocerans: Alona rectangula, Ceriodaphnia dubia, Daphnia pulex, Moina macrocopa and Simocephalus vetulus). All of the zooplankton species tested were adversely affected by 1.5–3.0 g l−1 NaCl. In the range of salt concentrations tested, the population growth curves of B. patulus and B. rubens showed almost no lag phase and reached peak abundances within a week or two; A. fissa had a lag phase of about a week, while both B. calyciflorus and B. havanaensis started to increase in abundance immediately following the initiation of the experiments. Increased NaCl levels reduced the population abundances of A. fissa, B. calyciflorus and B. havanaensis at or beyond 1.5 g l−1. NaCl at 1 g l−1 had little effect on the population growth of cladocerans. M. macrocopa, which was more resistant to NaCl than the other cladoceran species, showed positive population growth even at 4.5 g l−1. The rates of population increase (r, day−1) were generally higher for rotifers than for cladocerans. Depending on the NaCl concentration, the r of rotifers ranged from +0.57 to −0.58 day−1, while the r for cladocerans was lower (+0.34 to −0.22 day−1).  相似文献

Studies following the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska indicated that river otters (Lontra canadensis) from oiled regions displayed symptoms of degraded health, including reduced body weight. We examined the fate of ingested oil in the digestive tract and its effects on gut function in captive river otters. Fifteen wild-caught males were assigned to three groups, two of which were given weathered crude oil in food (i.e., control, 5 ppm day−1, and 50 ppm day−1) under controlled conditions at the Alaska Sealife Center. Using glass beads as non-specific digesta markers and stable isotope analysis, we determined the effects of ingested oil on retention time and nutrient uptake. Our data indicated that oil ingestion reduced marker retention time when we controlled for activity and meal size. Fecal isotope ratios suggested that absorption of lipids in the oiled otters might have been affected by reduced retention time of food. In addition, a dilution model indicated that as much as 80% of ingested oil was not absorbed in high-dose animals. Thus, while the ingestion of large quantities of weathered crude oil appears to reduce absorption of oil hydrocarbons and may alleviate systemic effects, it may concurrently affect body condition by impacting digestive function. Fish <1 year old were sampled during 1 year using nets inshore at South Georgia. Some fish were kept in aquaria. Growth rates were estimated using the exponential model. During June to October 1980, field growth rates of Parachaenichthys georgianus and Champsocephalus gunnari were 0.33 and 0.48% SL day−1, respectively. Gobionotothen marionensis (1979 cohort) grew at 0.40% SL day−1 during June to November in the field, and 0.34% SL day−1 in the laboratory from September to March. Notothenia coriiceps grew at 0.28% SL day−1 in the laboratory during September to March. During November to December, Artedidraco mirus grew at 0.82% SL day−1 in the field. The 1980 cohort of G. marionensis grew at 1.39% SL day−1 during November to January in the field. During January, the field growth rate of G. gibberifrons was 1.39% SL day−1. Growth rates increased three-fold from winter to summer. Temperature can only explain one-half of this range in growth rates, whereas all of this range can be explained by food availability. Therefore, seasonal food resource limitation has a major effect on Antarctic fish growth. Received: 30 June 1997 / Accepted: 7 September 1997  相似文献

Nutrient-enriched water hyacinths were stocked in outdoor tanks and cultured under both high nutrient (HN) and low nutrient (LN) regimes for 10 months. Seasonal changes in standing crop biomass and morphology of LN water hyacinths were similar to those of HN water hyacinths, despite a ten-fold between-treatment difference in N availability and a two-fold difference in average plant N concentrations (1.0 and 2.0% for LN and HN plants, respectively). Tissue N accumulated by the LN plants prior to stocking helped support standing crop development during the 10 month study. In both HN and LN treatments, the rate of detritus deposition, or the sloughing of dead plant tissues from the mat, was lower than the actual detritus production rate because of the retention of dead ‘aerial’ tissues (laminae and petioles) in the floating mat. The retention of laminae and petioles may serve as a nutrient conservation mechanism, since nutrients released from decomposing tissues in the mat-water environment may be assimilated by adjacent plants. The average rate of detritus deposition (both dry matter and N) by LN water hyacinths (1.2 g dry wt. m−2 day−1 and 0.017 g N m−2 day−1) was lower than that of HN plants (3.0 g dry wt. m−2 day−1 and 0.075 g N m−2 day−1) during the study. Low detrital N losses by the water hyacinth probably enhance the survival of this species in aquatic systems which receive nutrient inputs intermittently.  相似文献

The effect of the phenolic glycoside, salicin, on food intake of the common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) was studied in a series of feeding experiments. Increasing the concentration of salicin in a diet of fruits and cereals led to significant reductions of food intake in the short term (6 days). After prolonged (20 days) exposure to salicin, food intake (19 g kg−0.75 day−1) was still reduced relative to controls (31 g kg−0.75 day−1) but not reduced to the same extent as in the short-term experiments. Nonetheless, over these 20 days, common brushtail possums regulated their intake of salicin so as not to exceed a threshold limit of 1.9 ± 0.1 g kg−0.75 day−1. Manipulative experiments sought to determine whether this threshold intake was in response to pre-ingestive factors (taste) or the post-ingestive consequences of ingesting salicin. Dietary salicin (0.17–5.0% DM) had no significant effect on nitrogen balance or urea metabolism and injection of a specific serotonin receptor antagonist, ondansetron, did not lead to increases in salicin intake as has been found for some other plant secondary metabolites. Similarly, administration of 1.3 g salicin by gavage had no significant effect on the subsequent intake of salicin compared to controls that were gavaged with water. We concluded that pre-ingestive factors were responsible for common brushtail possums limiting their intake of salicin-rich diets rather than any measurable post-ingestive consequence of feeding. The investigation of the zooplankton community in the upstream part of Stratos reservoir during a 24 months survey (September 2004–August 2006) revealed 26 invertebrate species (14 rotifers, 6 cladocerans, 5 copepods and one mollusk larva). The mean abundance of the total zooplankton was higher in the first sampling period (2004–2005) and ranged between 8.81 and 47.74 ind. L−1, than the second period (2005–2006) when fluctuated between 1.91 and 43.09 ind. L−1. The seasonal variation was strongly influenced by the presence of rotifers, which accounting on average for 68.4% in total. Among them Keratella cochlearis and the order Bdelloidea were numerically the most important, while Macrocyclops albidus prevailed among the copepods and Bosmina longirostris among the cladocerans. Dreissena polymorpha was the only mollusk found in the zooplankton community. Rotifers, copepods and cladocerans showed a seasonal succession with the former preceding in the abundance having their first maximum in spring, while copepods and cladocerans followed, having peaks of abundance in early summer and in autumn, respectively. No seasonal succession among the cladoceran species was observed. The intense water flow in the upstream part of the reservoir, as well as temperature, conductivity, DO, pH, phosphates and silicates, were significant parameters controlling abiotic and biotic elements of the ecosystem and consequently influencing the seasonal variation and the dynamics of the zooplankton community.  相似文献

Abstract Seasonal variation in bacterioplankton abundance, biomass, and bacterioplankton production was studied over eight years in hypertrophic Lake S?byg?rd. Biologically, the lake is highly variable; this is due mainly to large interannual variation in fish recruitment. Bacterioplankton production was low during winter, typically 1–3 × 107 cells l−1 h−1, and high during summer, albeit greatly fluctuating with maximum rates typically ranging from 60 to 90 × 107 cells l−1 h−1 (or 0.4 to 0.6 mg C l−1 day−1). Less pronounced variations were found in bacterioplankton abundance, which typically ranged from 3–8 × 109 cells l−1 in winter to 15–30 × 109 cells l−1 during summer. The specific growth rate of bacterioplankton varied from 0.02–0.2 d−1 in winter to 0.5–2.3 day−1 during summer. Interpolated mean bacterioplankton production, in terms of carbon, ranged from 0.08 to 0.16 mg C l−1 day−1, corresponding to 1.6–5.5% of the phytoplankton production, while biomass ranged from 0.28 to 0.36 mg C l−1, corresponding to 1.9–4.6% of the phytoplankton biomass. We conducted regression analysis, relating the bacterioplankton variables to a number of environmental variables, and evaluated the interannual parameter variability. Chlorophyll a and phytoplankton production contributed less to the variation in the bacterioplankton variables than in most previous analyses using data from less eutrophic systems. We suggest that the proportion of phytoplankton production that is channelized through bacterioplankton in lakes decreases with increasing trophic state and decreasing mean depth. This probably reflects a concurrent increase in fish predation on macrozooplankton and loss by sedimentation. An important part of the residual variation in the equations hitherto proposed in the literature could be explained by variation in macrozooplankton biomass and pH > 10.2. A negative effect of high pH on bacterioplankton production was confirmed by laboratory experiments. The impact of different zooplankton varies considerably, with Daphnia seeming to have a negative impact on bacterioplankton abundance and, thereby, indirectly on bacterioplankton production, while Bosmina, rotifers, and cyclopoid copepods seem to stimulate both abundance and production. Bosmina apparently also stimulate the bacterioplankton specific growth rate. Received: 8 February 1996; Accepted: 16 July 1996  相似文献
