Respiratory oxygen consumption by roots was 1·4- and1·6-fold larger in NH+4-fed than in NO-3-fed wheat (Triticumaestivum L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) plants respectively. Higherroot oxygen consumption in NH+4-fed plants than in NO-3-fedplants was associated with higher total nitrogen contents inNH+4-fed plants. Root oxygen consumption was, however, not correlatedwith growth rates or shoot:root ratios. Carbon dioxide releasewas 1·4- and 1·2-fold larger in NO+3-fed thanin NH+4-fed wheat and maize plants respectively. Differencesin oxygen and carbon dioxide gas exchange rates resulted inthe gas exchange quotients of NH-4-fed plants (wheat, 0·5;maize, 0·6) being greatly reduced compared with thoseof NO-3-fed plants (wheat, 1·0; maize, 1·1). Measuredrates of HCO-3 assimilation by PEPc in roots were considerablylarger in 4 mM NH+4-fed than in 4 NO-3 plants (wheat, 2·6-fold;maize, 8·3-fold). These differences were, however, insufficientto account for the observed differences in root carbon dioxideflux and it is probable that HCO-3 uptake is also importantin determining carbon dioxide fluxes. Thus reduced root extension in NH+4-fed compared with NO-3-fedwheat plants could not be ascribed to differences in carbondioxide losses from roots.Copyright 1993, 1999 Academic Press Triticum aestivum, wheat, Zea mays, maize assimilation, ammonium assimilation, root respiration  相似文献

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] plants that had been subjectedto 15 d of nitrogen deprivation were resupplied for 10 d with1.0 mol m–3 nitrogen provided as NO3, NH4+, orNH4++NO3 in flowing hydroponic culture. Plants in a fourthhydroponic system received 1.0 mol m–3 NO3 duringboth stress and resupply periods. Concentrations of solublecarbohydrates and organic acids in roots increased 210 and 370%,respectively, during stress. For the first day of resupply, however, specific uptake rates of nitrogen, determined by ionchromatography as depletion from solution, were lower for stressedthan for non-stressed plants by 43% for NO3- resupply, by 32%for NH4+ + NO3 resupply, and 86% for NH4+ resupply. Whenspecific uptake of nitrogen for stressed plants recovered torates for non-stressed plants at 6 to 8 d after nitrogen resupply, carbohydrates and organic acids in their roots had declinedto concentrations lower than those of non-stressed plants. Recoveryof nitrogen uptake capacity of roots thus does not appear tobe regulated simply by the content of soluble carbon compoundswithin roots. Solution concentrations of NH4+ and NO3 were monitoredat 62.5 min intervals during the first 3 d of resupply. Intermittent‘hourly’ intervals of net influx and net effluxoccurred. Rates of uptake during influx intervals were greaterfor the NH4+ -resupplied than for the NO3 -resuppliedplants. For NH4+ -resupplied plants, however, the hourly intervalsof efflux were more numerous than for NO3 -resuppliedplants. It thus is possible that, instead of repressing NH4+influx, increased accumulation of amino acids and NH4+ in NH4+-resupplled plants inhibited net uptake by stimulation of effluxof NH4+ absorbed in excess of availability of carbon skeletonsfor assimilation. Entry of NH4+ into root cytoplasm appearedto be less restricted than translocation of amino acids fromthe cytoplasm into the xylem. Cultivated Agave mapisaga and A. salmiana can have an extremelyhigh above-ground dry-weight productivity of 40 Mg ha–1yr–1. To help understand the below-ground capabilitiesthat support the high above-ground productivity of these Crassulaceanacid metabolism plants, roots were studied in the laboratoryand in plantations near Mexico City. For approximately 15-year-oldplants, the lateral spread of roots from the plant base averaged1.3 m and the maximal root depth was 0.8 m, both considerablygreater than for desert succulents of the same age. Root andshoot growth occurred all year, although the increase in shootgrowth at the beginning of the wet season preceded the increasein growth of main roots. New lateral roots branching from themain roots were more common at the beginning of the wet season, which favoured water uptake with a minimal biomass investment, whereas growth of new main roots occurred later in the growingseason. The root: shoot dry weight ratio was extremely low, less than 0.07 for 6-year-old plants of both species, and decreasedwith plant age. The elongation rates of main roots and lateralroots were 10 to 17 mm d–1, higher than for various desertsucculents but similar to elongation rates for roots of highlyproductive C3 and C4 agronomic species. The respiration rateof attached main roots was 32 µmol CO2 evolved kg–1dry weight s–1 at 4 weeks of age, that of lateral rootswas about 70% higher, and both rates decreased with root age.Such respiration rates are 4- to 5-fold higher than for Agavedeserti, but similar to rates for C3 and C4 agronomic species. The root hydraulic conductivity had a maximal value of 3 x 10–7ms–1 MPa–1 at 4 weeks of age, similar to A. deserti. The radial hydraulic conductivity from the root surface to thexylem decreased and the axial conductivity along the xylem increasedwith root age, again similar to A. deserti. Thus, although rootsof A. mapisaga and A. salmiana had hydraulic properties perunit length similar to those of a desert agave, their highergrowth rates, their higher respiration rates, and the greatersoil volume explored by their roots than for various desertsucculents apparently helped support their high above-groundbiomass productivity Key words: Crassulacean acid metabolism, productivity, root elongation rate, root system, water uptake  相似文献

The specific respiration rates of nodulated root systems, ofnodules and of roots were determined during active nitrogenfixation in soya bean, navy bean, pea, lucerne, red clover andwhite clover, by measurements on whole plants before and afterthe removal of nodule populations. Similar measurements weremade on comparable populations of the six legumes, lacking nodulesbut receiving abundant nitrate-nitrogen, to determine the specificrespiration of their roots. All plants were grown in a controlled-environmentclimate which fostered rapid growth. The specific respiration rates of nodulated root systems ofthe three grain and three forage legumes during a 7–14-dayperiod of vegetative growth varied between 10 and 17 mg CO2g–1 (dry weight) h–1. This mean value consistedof two components: a specific root respiration rate of 6–9mg CO2 g–1 h–1 and a specific nodule respirationrate of 22–46 mg CO2 g–1 h–1. Nodule respirationaccounted for 42–70 per cent of nodulated root respiration;nodule weight accounted for 12–40 per cent of nodulatedroot weight. The specific respiration rates of roots lackingnodules and utilizing nitrate nitrogen were generally 20–30per cent greater than the equivalent rates of roots from nodulatedplants. The measured respiratory effluxes are discussed in thecontext of nitrogen nitrogen fixation, nitrate assimilation. Acclimation of NO3 transport fluxes (influx, efflux)in roots of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. cv. Bien venu) andtheir sensitivity to growth at low root temperature was studiedin relation to external NO3 supply, defined by constantconcentrations ranging from sub- to supra-optimal with respectto plant growth rate. Plants were grown from seed in flowingnutrient solutions containing 250 mmol m–3 NO3at 17°C for 20d, and solution temperature in half the cultureunits was then lowered decrementally over 3 d to 7°C. Threedays later plants were supplied with NO3 at 1, 10, 100or 1000 mmol m–3 maintained for 18 d. Dry matter productionwas decreased more by low root zone temperature than low [NO3]e. Root specific growth rates were inversely related to [NO3]eand shoot:root ratios increased with time at [NO3]e between10–1000 mmol m–3. Net uptake of NO3 at 17°Cwas twice that at 7°C, and at both temperatures it doubledwith increasing [NO3]e between 1–10 mmol m–3with further small increases at higher [NO3]e. Mean unitabsorption rates of NO3 between 0–6 d and 6–14d were linearly related (r2 of 0.79–0.99) to log10[NO].Steady-state Q10 (7–17°C) for uptake between 0–6d were 0.91, 1.62, 1.27, and 1.10, respectively, at [NO3]eof 1, 10, 100, and 1000 mmol m–3, compared with correspondingvalues of 0.98, 1.38, 1.68, and 1.89 between 6–14 d. Thedata indicated that net uptake rates at 7 and 17°C divergedover time at high [NO3]e. Short-term uptake rates from1 mol m–3 NO3 measured at 17°C were higherin plants grown with roots at 7°C than at 17°C; for7°C plants there was a strong inverse linear relationship(r2=0.94) between uptake rate and treatment log10 [NO3]ewhilst rates in 17°C plants were independent of prior [NO3]e. Rates of NO3 influx and efflux under different steady-stateconditions of NO3 supply and root temperature were calculatedfrom dilution of 15N added to culture solutions. Efflux wassubstantial relative to net uptake in all treatments, and wasinversely related to [NO3]e at 17°C but not at 7°C.Ratios of influx: efflux ranged from 1.6–2.9 at 17°Cand 1.3–1.8 at 7°C, indicating the proportionatelygreater impact of efflux at low root temperature. Ratios ofefflux: net uptake were 0.53–1.56 at 17°C and 1.21–3.58at 7°C. The apparent sensitivities of influx and effluxto steady-state root temperature varied with [NO3]e.Both fluxes were higher at 17°C than 7°C in the presenceof 100–1000 mmol m–3 NO3 but the trend wasreversed at 1–10 mmol m–3 NO. Concentrations oftotal N measured in xylem exudate were at least 2-fold higherat 7°C compared with 17°C, attributable mainly to higherconcentrations of NO3 glutamine and proline. The resultsare discussed in terms of acclimatory and other responses shownby the NO3 transport system under conditions of limitingNO3 supply and low root temperature. Lamaze, T., Sentenac, H. and Grignon, C. 1987. Orthophosphaterelations of root: NO3effects on orthophosphate influx, accumulation and secretion into the xylem.—J. exp. Bot.38: 923–934. Orthophosphate (Pi) accumulation by barley (Hordeum vulgareL.) roots was specifically inhibited by NO3 as comparedto Cl and SO42 –, and Pi secretion into the xylemwas stimulated. The inhibition of Pi accumulation by NO3was also observed in roots of intact photosynthesizing horsebean(Vicia faba L.), rice (Oryza sativa L.) and soybean (Glycinemax L.) plants. NO3 effects on Pi transport by rootswere more thoroughly investigated with corn (Zea mays L.). Theywere due to intracellular NO3. Pi secretion was stillstimulated by NO3 after Pi withdrawal from the absorptionsolution. 32Pi influx decreased during Pi accumulation, supportingthe hypothesis that this ion allosterically regulated its owntransport system by feedback control. This control was modulatedby other anions: the decrease was more pronounced in the presenceof nitrate. Chronologically, the depressive effect of NO3on 32Pi influx appeared after the inhibition of Pi accumulation.Furthermore, under conditions where Pi accumulation was notaffected by NO3, 32Pi influx and Pi secretion into thexylem became insensitive to the presence of nitrate. Our hypothesisis that the stimulative effect of NO3 on Pi secretionand the depressive one on 32Pi influx are the repercussionsof an increase in the Pi cytosolic concentration due to an NO3-induced decrease in Pi uptake by the vacuoles. The effect of light on NO3 utilization was investigatedin non-nodulated soybean (Clycine max L. Merr., cv. Kingsoy)plants during a 14/10 h light/dark period at a constant temperatureof 26C. A 30–50% decrease of net NO3 uptake ratewas observed 2–6 h after the lights were turned off. Thiswas specifically due to an inhibition of NO3 influx asmeasured by 15N incorporation during 5 min. The absolute valuesof NO3 efflux depended on whether the labelling protocolinvolved manipulation of the plants or not, but were not affectedby illumination of the shoots. Darkness had an even more markedeffect in lowering the reduction of 15NO3 in both rootsand shoots, as well as xylem transport of 15NO3 and reduced15N. Concurrently with this slowing down of transport and metabolicprocesses, accumulations of NO3 and Asn were significantlystimulated in roots during the dark period. These data are discussedin view of the hypothesis that darkness adversely affects NO3uptake through specific feedback control, in response to alterationsin the later steps of N utilization which are more directlydependent on light. Phosphorus and nitrogen uptake capacities were assessed during36–58 d drying cycles to determine whether the abilityof sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.) to absorb these nutrientschanged as the roots were subjected to increasing levels ofwater stress. Water was withheld from mature plants in large(6 I) containers and the uptake capacity of excised roots insolution was determined as soil water potentials decreased from–0.03 MPa to –5.0 MPa. Phosphorus uptake rates of excised roots at given substrateconcentrations increased as preharvest soil water potentialsdecreased to –5.0 MPa. Vmax and Km also increased as soilwater potentials declined. Declining soil water potentials depressednitrogen uptake at set substrate concentrations, but uptakecapacity, calculated as the sum Vmax for both NH+4+NO3,did not change significantly with drying. The sum Vmax correlatedwith root nitrogen concentration. Root uptake capacity for nitrogen and phosphorus was extremelystable under severe water stress in this aridland shrub. Maintenanceof uptake capacity, coupled with a previously demonstrated abilityto conduct hydraulic lift, may enable A. tridentata better tomaintain nitrogen and phosphorus uptake as soil water availabilitydeclines. These mechanisms may be important in the ability ofA. tridentata to maintain growth, complete reproduction, andgain an advantage against competitors late in the season whenthe soil layers with higher nutrient availability are dry. Barley was grown at a range of oxygen concentrations (0.5–9mg l–1), in nutrient solutions. Growth of both shootsand seminal roots was restricted by O2 concentrations lowerthan 2–3 mg l–1) but nodal root growth was not. Root porosities were increased even at those O2 concentrationswhich did not restrict growth, and were inversely proportionalto the protein levels of the roots. Sugar concentrations increasedappreciably only at those O2 concentrations which also restrictedgrowth. Hordeum vulgare L., barley, root porosity, sugar, protein, oxygen concentration  相似文献

The short-term dependence of NO3 uptake upon photosynthesisand sugar supply to the roots of soybean plants was investigatedin a series of experiments where CO2 availability, light intensityor conduction of phloem sap to the roots were severely limited.Removal of CO2 from the atmosphere or girdling of the stem equallyprevented the stimulation of NO3 uptake when plants weretransferred from darkness to the light. The effect of thesetwo treatments can be reversed by CO2 re-supply or by additionof 10 mM glucose in the nutrient solution, respectively. Glucosewas also more effective in stimulating NO3 uptake byintact plants in darkness than in light. Collectively, theseobservations are interpreted as evidence that the diurnal changesin NO3 uptake are due to decreased phloem transport ofphotosynthates in darkness. Accordingly, the magnitude of thesechanges was much dependent on starch accumulation in the leavesat the end of the photo-period. Shading the plants lowered thisaccumulation, and resulted in an amplification of the diurnalchanges in NO3 uptake. These results are discussed inconnection with the hypothesis that the carbon-dependent plasticityof the night/day ratio of NO3 uptake is an importantfeature of the co-ordination of the acquisition of N and C bythe plant. Root growth in chickpea (Cicer arietinum) has been studied fromthe early vegetative phase to the reproductive stage in orderto elucidate its growth and maintenance respiration and to quantifythe translocation of assimilates from shoot to root. A carbonbalance has been drawn for this purpose using the growth andrespiration data. The increase in the sieve tube cross-sectionalarea was also followed simultaneously. Plants growing in a nutrient culture medium were studied todetermine the relative growth rate (RGR) 5–60 d aftergermination. RGR declined from 113 to 41 mg d–1 g–1during the measurement period. Simultaneous with the RGR analysis, respiration rate was also measured using an oxygen electrode. The respiration rate declined as the plants aged and a drasticreduction was recorded following anthesis. The relationshipbetween RGR and respiration rate was used to extrapolate themaintenance respiration (m) and growth respiration (1/YEG).The respiration quotient (r.q.) of the roots was 1.2 and theQ10 in the range 20–25 °C was 2·2. A carbon balance for the roots was constructed by subtractingthe carbon lost during respiration from that gained during growth. The roots were found to respire no less than 80% of the carbontranslocated. The increase in the cross-sectional area composed of sieve tubeswas measured near the root-shoot junction as the plants grew.Chickpea has storied sieve plates which simplifies these measurements.Their cross-sectional area increased during growth mainly becauseof an increase in sieve tube number. The diameter of individualsieve tubes remained constant. Specific mass transfer (SMT) values for seive tubes into theroots have been computed during various stages of growth. SMTvalues were relatively constant before anthesis (approx. 6·5g h–1 cm–2), but decreased following anthesis. Wedid not evaluate possible retranslocation from roots: any suchretranslocation would have the effect of increasing our SMTvalues. The Carbon Economy of Rubus chamaemorus L. II. Respiration   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
MARKS  T. C. 《Annals of botany》1978,42(1):181-190
Respiratory activity and seasonal changes in carbohydrate contentof the storage organs of Rubus chamaemorus L. have been investigated.Leaf dark respiration rate increases in a non-linear mannerfrom 0·7 mg CO2 evolved dm–2 h–1 at 0 °Cto 4·6 rng CO2 evolved dm–2 hh–1 at 30 °C.Root and rhizome respiration rates increase from 1 µ1O2 uptake g–1 fresh weight h–1 at 0.7 ° C to10 µ10, uptake g–1 f. wt h–1 at 20 °C.Rhizome carbohydrate reserves decline from a September peakof 33 per cent alcohol insoluble d. wt to 16 per cent in May. The circumpolar distribution of R. chamaemorus is discussedin relation to the evidence presented here and in the precedingpaper of the series.  相似文献

The processes of NO3 uptake and transport and the effectsof NH4+ or L-glutamate on these processes were investigatedwith excised non-mycorrhizal beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) roots.NO3 net uptake followed uniphasic Michaelis-Menten kineticsin a concentration range of 10µM to 1 mM with an apparentKm of 9.2 µM and a Vmax of 366 nmol g–1 FW h–1.NH4+, when present in excess to NO3, or 10 mM L-glutamateinhibited the net uptake of NO3 Apparently, part of NO3taken up was loaded into the xylem. Relative xylem loading ofNO3 ranged from 3.21.6 to 6.45.1% of NO3 netuptake. It was not affected by treatment with NH4+ or L-glutamate.16N/13N double labelling experiments showed that NO3efflux from roots increased with increasing influx of NO3and, therefore, declined if influx was reduced by NH4+ or L-glutamateexposure. From these results it is concluded that NO3net uptake by non-mycorrhizal beech roots is reduced by NH4+or L-glutamate at the level of influx and not at the level ofefflux. Nodulated white clover plants (Trifolium repens L. cv. Huia)were grown as simulated swards for 71 d in flowing nutrientsolutions with roots at 11 C and shoots at 20/15 C, day/night,under natural illumination. Root temperatures were then changedto 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17 or 25 C and the total N2, fixation over21 d was measured in the absence of a supply mineral N. Alltreatments were subsequently supplied with 10 mmol m–2NO2 in the flowing solutions for 14 d, and the relativeuptake of N by N2, fixation and NO3 uptake was compared.Net uptake of K+ was measured on a daily basis. Root temperature had little effect on root d. wt over the 35-dexperimental period, but shoot d. wt increased by a factor of3.5 between 3 and 25 C, with the sharpest increase occurringat 7–11 C. Shoot: root d. wt ratios increased from 25to 68 with increasing temperature at 7–25 C. N2-fixationper plant (in the absence of NO2 ) increased with roottemperature at 3–13C, but showed little change above13 C. The ratios of N2 fixation: NO2 uptake over 14d (mol N: mol N) were 0.47–0.77 at 3–7 C, 092–154at 11–17 C, and 046 at 25 C, reflecting the dominanceof NO3 uptake over N2 fixation at extremes of high andlow root temperature. The total uptake of N varied only slightlyat 11–25 –C (095–110 mmol N plant–1),the decline in N2 fixation as root temperature increased above11 C was compensated for by the increase in NO 3 uptake. The % N in shoot dry matter declined with decreasing root temperature, from 32% at 13 C to 15% at 3 C. In contrast, concentrationsof N expressed on a shoot water content basis showed a modestdecrease with increasing temperature, from 345 mol m–3at 3 C to 290 mol m–3 at 25 C. The effects of a range of applied nitrate (NO3) concentrations(0–20 mol m3) on germination and emergence percentageof Triticum aestivum L. cv. Otane were examined at 30, 60, 90and 120 mm sowing depths. Germination percentage was not affectedby either sowing depth or applied NO3 concentration whereasemergence percentage decreased with increased sowing depth regardlessof applied NO3 concentration. Nitrate did not affectemergence percentage at 30 mm sowing depth, but at 60 to 120mm depth, emergence percentage decreased sharply with an increasedapplied NO3 concentration of 0 to 1·0 mol m–3then decreased only slightly with further increases in appliedNO3 of about 5·0 mol m–3. Root and shoot growth, NO3 accumulation and nitrate reductaseactivity (NRA) of plants supplied with 0, 1·0 and 1·0mol m–3 NO3 at a sowing depth of 60 mm were measuredprior to emergence. The coleoptile of all seedlings opened withinthe substrate. Prior to emergence from the substrate, shootextension growth was unaffected by additional NO3 butshoot fr. wt. and dry wt. were both greater at 1·0 and1·0 mol m–3 NO3 than with zero NO3.Root dry wt. was unaffected by NO3. Nitrate concentrationand NRA in root and shoot were always low without NO3.At 1·0 and 10 mol m3 NO3, NO3 accumulatedin the root and shoot to concentrations substantially greaterthan that applied and caused the induction of NRA. Regardlessof the applied NO3 concentration, seedlings which failedto emerge still had substantial seed reserves one month afterplanting. Coleoptile length was substantially less for seedlingswhich did not emerge than for seedlings which emerged, but wasnot affected by NO3. It is proposed that (a) decreasedemergence percentage with increased sowing depth was due tothe emergence of leaf I from the coleoptile within the substrateand (b) decreased emergence percentage with additional NO3was due to the increased expansion of leaf 1 within the substrateresulting in greater folding and damage of the leaf. We studied the responses of Xanthium occidentale (Bertol.) (cockleburor Noogoora burr), a noxious weed, to atmospheric CO2 enrichmentand nitrate-N concentrations in the root zone ranging from 0.5to 25 mM. CO2 enrichment (1500 cm3 m–3) increased dry-matterproduction to about the same extent (18 per cent) at all levelsof supplied N: most of the increment in dry matter was distributedequally between leaves and roots so that there was little effecton shoot-to-root dry-weight ratios. Growth was stimulated greatlyby N and plateaued at 12 mM supplied N. Shoot-to-root dry-weightand total N ratios increased with increasing N supply. CO2 enrichmenthad no effect on the total amount of N accumulated by plants, but increased the N-use efficiency of leaves. Enriched plantshad lower concentrations and quantities of N in their leavesthan controls, and therefore lower shoot-to-root total N ratios.Little free NO3 accumulated in organs of control or enrichedplants. NO3 was the major form of N in xylem sap fromdetopped plants at low supplied NO3-N, but amino N was equalin importance at high supplied NO3-N in control and enrichedplants. Concentrations of NO3 were lower in the xylemsap of CO2 enriched plants. It was concluded that the betterN-use efficiency of CO2 enriched plants could result in increasedgrowth of X. occidentale in regions of marginal soil fertilityas atmospheric levels of CO2 increase. Diurnal K+ and Anion Transport in Phaseolus Pulvinus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Diurnal movement of Phaseolus leaf is caused by deformationof the laminar pulvinus located at the joint of the leaf bladeand the petiole. The plants were cultured in solutions withvarious ion compositions, and changes of K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+,Cl, NO3– and P1 concentrations both in the upperand lower parts of the laminar pulvinus were measured. Culturein 10 mM KCl solution caused an increase in K+ and Clconcentrations both in the upper and lower parts without anysignificant change in the concentration of NO3; culturein 10 mM KNO3 solution caused an increase in K+ and NO3concentration without any significant change in the concentrationof Cl; and culture in 10 mM KH2PO4 solution caused anincrease in K+ and P1 concentrations without any significantchange in the concentrations of NO3- and Cl. K+ moved from the upper to lower parts or from the lower toupper parts diurnally in all plants cultured in any solutionmentioned above. The main inorganic anion that accompanied thisK+ movement was Cl in KCl solution, and NO3 inKNO3 solution. When the seedlings were cultured in distilledwater or in KH2PO4 solution, neither Cl NO3 norP1 accompanied this K+ movement. In these cases, mainly H+ and/ororganic anions are supposed to move in exchange for and/or incombination with K+ movement. (Received November 8, 1982; Accepted June 13, 1983)  相似文献

Net photosynthesis rates (PN) of Viciafaba plants were measuredin chambers containing either clean air or air containing between50 and 300 parts 10–9 ozone (O3) with or without 40 parts10– 9 SO2. Exposure to O3 concentrations greater than 50 parts 10–9 for periods of 4 h resulted in reductions in PN with greaterreductions at higher concentrations. After exposure ceased, recovery of pre-exposure PN depended on O3 concentration. Exposureto less than 90. 100 parts 10– 9 was followed by completerecovery after 20 h whereas 200-300 parts 10– 9 resultedin visible injury and irreversible depression of PN. The additionof 40 parts 10– 9 SO2 to O3 significantly decreased Psbut the effect of SO2 declined with increasing O3. The additionof SO2 had no significant affect on recovery patterns. It is postulated that Vicia faba plants are able to toleratethe absorption of O, up to a threshold above which progressivedecreases in PN occur due to effects on photosynthetic processes. The slow and sometimes incompletely reversible effects of O3on PN indicate cellular differences in the injury mechanismand repair capacity compared with the action of SO2 alone. Lowconcentrations of O3 with SO2 result in additive injury to PNsuggesting independent action of the pollutants, but the reductionin SO2 action with increasing O3 indicates a limit for potentialphysiological injury More the onset of visible injury.  相似文献

Induction of CN-insensitive respiration with low concentrationsof respiratory inhibitors was studied. If roots were treatedwith 10–3 M CN for 96 hr, the plants died, whilethose treated with 10–4 M CN showed healthy growth. O2 uptake in untreated rice and wheat roots showed a negativeresponse to 10–2 M CN to a considerable extent. On the other hand, pretreatment with 10–4 M CNfor more than 6 hr did not greatly affect respiratory rate, but made respiration insensitive to 10–2 M CN.A similar induction of CN-insensitivity was also broughtabout with 10–4 and 10–3 M H2S and 10–4 MNaN3. Growth of two actinorhizal species was studied in relation tothe form of N supply in water culture. Non-nodulated bog myrtle(Myrica gale) and grey alder (Alnus incana) were grown withNH4+, NH4NO3 or NO3 (4 mol m–3 N). A nodulatedseries of bog myrtle was also cultivated in N-free medium. Relative growth rate (RGR), utilization rate of N, and shoot/rootratio were highest for the two species with the N completelysupplied as NH4+. In both species, nitrate was largely reducedin the roots and the presence of NO3 in combined-N supplyalways affected the RGR and N utilization rate negatively. BothN2 fixation and complete NO3 nutrition represented conditionsof relative N-deficiency resulting in relatively low tissue-Nconcentrations and a greater allocation of dry mass to the roots. The physiological N status of nodulated M. gale plants was comparativelygood, as indicated by a normal nodule weight ratio and a relativelyhigh N2-fixing rate per unit nodule mass. However, whole-plantN2-fixing capacity remained relatively low in comparison withacquisition rates of N in combined-N plants. The anion charge from the nitrate reduction was largely directlyexcreted as an OH efflux. H + /N ratios generally agreedwith the theory. In comparison with NH4+ nutrition, carboxylateconcentrations were higher in N2-fixing M. gale plants and theH + /N ratio in nodulated plants was less than unity below thevalue for ammonium plants as previously found for other actinorhizalspecies. Therefore, NH4+ should be an energetically more attractiveN source for actinorhizal plants than N2.
