We studied in a laboratory experiment using stream tanks if two percid prey fish, the perch (Perca fluviatilis) and the ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus), can recognize and respond to increased predation risk using odors of two piscivores, the pike (Esox lucius) and the burbot (Lota lota). Burbot is night-active most of the year but pike hunts predominantly visually whenever there is enough light. Perch is a common day-active prey of pike and dark-active ruffe that of burbot. We predicted that besides recognizing the predator odors, the prey species would respond more strongly to odors of the predator which share the same activity pattern. Both perch and ruffe clearly responded to both predator fish odors. They decreased movements and erected the spiny dorsal fins. Fin erection showed clearly the black warning ornamentation in the fin and thus erected fin may function besides as mechanical defense also as warning ornament for an approaching predator. No rapid escape movements were generally observed. Both perch and ruffe responded more strongly to pike odor than to burbot. There were no clear differences in response between day and night. In conclusion, we were able to verify clear predator odor recognition by both prey fish. Both perch and ruffe responded to both predator odors and it seemed that pike forms a stronger threat for both prey species. Despite of diel activity differences both perch and ruffe used the same antipredatory strategies, but the day-active perch seemed to have a more flexible antipredatory behavior by responding more strongly to burbot threat during the night when burbot is active.  相似文献

Male nuptial colour hues are important for the maintenance of reproductive isolation among cichlid fish species, and environmental changes that lead to narrower light spectra can lead to hybridization. However, cichlid species can naturally co-occur in narrow light spectrum habitats, such as turbid shallow lakes and the deep benthic zones of African rift lakes. Closely related species from narrow light spectrum habitats tend to differ little in the palette of male nuptial colours, thus for these taxa differences in colour patterns may be more important than differences in colour hue for species recognition. To investigate this hypothesis we examined morphometric and genetic differentiation among males of four sympatric putative species within the deep-water genus Diplotaxodon. These taxa live in a narrow-light spectrum environment where only blue light is present, and males differ primarily in 'monochromatic' black, white and silver patterning of the body and fins. Significant genetic differentiation was present among taxa in both microsatellite DNA and mitochondrial DNA, including one pair with no significant morphometric differentiation. Thus, these taxa represent reproductively isolated biological species, a result consistent with male nuptial patterning being important for species recognition and assortative mating. As such, we suggest that narrow-light spectra need not always represent barriers to effective visually mediated mate recognition.  相似文献

Geographic variations in reproductive traits are important for evolutionary biology, but often difficult to investigate because of the need for a large-scale survey and the ephemeral nature of secondary sexual characteristics. Here, using web image searches (Google Images and Twitter), we revealed large-scale geographic variations (>1500 km) in breeding timing and nuptial coloration in the mutually ornamented fish, Japanese dace (Tribolodon hakonensis). As this fish is easily caught and many anglers upload their photographs on the web, we were able to find a total of 401 high-resolution photographs from all over Japan. Breeding periods were determined from dates of photographs with/without nuptial coloration, which matched with previous studies. We also found that breeding periods might have advanced three weeks over the last 80 years in the Chitose River, potentially because of climate change. Additionally, the pattern of latitudinal cline for breeding timing revealed delayed timing in higher latitudes, although regional variations were also high. Finally, we quantified the patterns of nuptial coloration for this mutually ornamented fish, and confirmed that over 80% of individuals showed typical colorations, but others showed rare phenotypes that were never previously described, including an intermediate coloration between T. hakonensis and a potentially hybridizing species, T. brandtii. Our web-based method for estimating breeding phenology could be adopted for organisms with temporal sexual characteristics, such as plants (e.g., flowering time) and some fishes. Web image analyses are still preliminarily with many limitations, but could be promising for investigating variations in visible traits.  相似文献

The recent miniaturization of acoustic tracking devices has allowed fishery managers and scientists to collect spatial and temporal data for sustainable fishery management. The spatial and temporal dimensions of fish behavior (movement and/or vertical migrations) are particularly relevant for rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) because most rockfish species are long-lived and have high site fidelity, increasing their vulnerability to overexploitation. In this study, we describe the short-term (with a tracking period of up to 46 d) spatial behavior, as determined by acoustic tracking, of the black rockfish Sebastes schlegelii, a species subject to overexploitation in the Yellow Sea of China. The average residence index (the ratio of detected days to the total period from release to the last detection) in the study area was 0.92 ± 0.13, and most of the tagged fish were detected by only one region of the acoustic receiver array, suggesting relatively high site fidelity to the study area. Acoustic tracking also suggested that this species is more frequently detected during the day than at night in our study area. However, the diel detection periodicity (24 h) was only evident for certain periods of the tracking time, as revealed by a continuous wavelet transform. The habitat selection index of tagged S. schlegelii suggested that S. schlegelii preferred natural reefs, mixed sand/artificial reef bottoms and mixed bottoms of boulder, cobble, gravel and artificial reefs. The preference of this species for the artificial reefs that were recently deployed in the study area suggests that artificial seascapes may be effective management tools to attract individuals. The vertical movement of tagged S. schlegelii was mostly characterized by bottom dwelling behavior, and there was high individual variability in the vertical migration pattern. Our results have important implications for S. schlegelii catchability, the implementation of marine protected areas, and the identification of key species habitats, and our study provides novel information for future studies on the sustainability of this important marine resource in eastern China.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted to demonstrate species recognition in Dascyllus aruanus. Aggression was used as a criterion for recognition. Free-living fish were presented with live stimuli in a choice situation where visual cues could be isolated from other cues. The stimuli were conspecific and heterospecific fish. Practically all the responses were aggressive. Aggression towards D. aruanus and Dascyllus marginatus was similar in its intensity, and higher than towards Dascyllus trimaculatus. Aggression towards Amphiprion bicinctus was negligible. Elimination of all but visual cues resulted in a decline in attack rate without changing attack preference. The high level of interspecific aggression limits the use of aggression as an indicator of species recognition under the presented experimental situation.  相似文献

In regions with high biodiversity, where species are exploited as a source of income, it is essential to learn more about the species that are being commercialized. For the ornamental fish black arowana (Osteoglossum ferreirai), distributed only in Colombia and Brazil, there is currently a lack of information about population estimates in each location, genetic data and lastly, about the events that lead to the current distribution of the species. A genetic population study was conducted by sequencing the mitochondrial genes cytochrome b and ATPase 6, and genotyping of eight microsatellite loci. Mitochondrial gene results indicated the absence of variable sites, and the microsatellite results showed a significantly lower heterozygosity than expected demonstrating that currently the genetic diversity of the species is low. The fact that this species is been exploited and that it shows low genetic diversity means it can quickly become endangered. For this reason, conservation, management and use programs for the black arowana should include and consider the genetic data obtained as well as additional life history and ecological factors to promote its sustainable use.  相似文献

Summary The guppy, Poecilia reticulata, is economically the most important species of freshwater ornamental fish cultured in Singapore. About 30 strains with different color patterns and fin shapes are reared in guppy farms practising monoculture in Singapore. To compare the growth rates of domesticated strains with different color patterns, newborn fry of 11 strains were obtained on the same day from a single farm in Singapore and were reared experimentally in the laboratory for about 100 days. Each strain was distributed randomly into 4 tanks with 30 fish/tank. Weekly weighings of 10 fish/tank were made from 17 to 100 days of age. Three strains were homozygous for the autosomal recessive blond gene which gives rise to a pale yellow background pigmentation (bb). These blond strains had significantly smaller body weights than corresponding ones with the same color pattern but with the wild-type grey-brown background coloration due to the dominant allele (BB). The strains with the red tail pattern due to a dominant X-linked gene (Rdt) had more rapid growth than those with other tail color patterns including the blue, black, green snakeskin and variegated. However, no significant differences were detected among the other color pattern strains. Thus among the strains studied, the blond strains were associated with slower growth while those with the red tail color were associated with faster growth.  相似文献

The Internet has changed the way biologists communicate; this includes the collection of information on fish biology. This technological change may allow the possibility for biological monitoring by general citizens via the Internet. The Japanese Internet atlas of fishes, WEB sakana-zukan, has been in operation since 2002. It provides an opportunity to communicate and accumulate information on fish biology by amateur users, who consist mainly of sports fishing fans. This website has functioned not only as an entertainment and educational tool for users with an environmental and ichthyological interest. To date, more than 35,000 photographs of fishes have been registered on the website by more than 1,000 unique users, and more than 37,500 photographs of fishes have been posted in its bulletin board system (linking approximately 28,000 photographs to the website) by more than 2,000 unique users. As these photographs almost always include time and locality data, it is possible to provide distribution data by publishing the information as scientific papers or registering them as collections at the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Natural History (the Image Database of Fishes (KPM-NR) contributing to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility). If the communication method is developed and improved, various scientists will be able to collect much more biodiversity data from general citizens via the Internet.  相似文献

The behaviour of eight large benthopelagic fish taxa was analysed using video records collected with an ROV on the mid-slope of the Bay of Biscay. The studied species were roundnose grenadier (Coryphaenoides rupestris), orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus), deep-sea scorpionfish (Trachyscorpia cristulata echinata), and black scabbardfish (Aphanopus carbo), as well as individuals belonging to the families Alepocephalidae, Chimaeridae, and Scyliorhinidae, and to the order Squaliformes. Some of the observed fish were grouped at the family taxonomical level due to visual identification to species being unreliable. Assumed natural (undisturbed) behaviour was categorised in terms of (i) body position with respect to the bottom sea floor, (ii) locomotion and (iii) activity type. Reaction (disturbed) behaviour to the approaching ROV was categorised in terms of reaction type and distance. Environmental conditions (depth, temperature, current speed and direction) and observation conditions (ROV speed and altitude) were recorded simultaneously with fish observations in order to explain the variability in the observed reaction behaviour. A multivariate analysis identified three groups corresponding to a behaviour pattern of a sit and wait strategist (one species), an active bottom hunter (three taxa), and a group of species displaying little activity in their bottom habitat (three taxa). At species level the environmental and observation conditions had some explanatory power for individual behaviour variability. It is hypothesised that the varied behaviour of mid-slope benthopelagic fish contributes to maintain a high species diversity of large predators in an energy poor environment.  相似文献

Fishes are known to use chemical alarm cues from both conspecifics and heterospecifics to assess local predation risks and enhance predator detection. Yet it is unknown how recognition of heterospecific cues arises for coral reef fishes. Here, we test if naïve juvenile fish have an innate recognition of heterospecific alarm cues. We also examine if there is a relationship between the intensity of the antipredator response to these cues and the degree to which species are related to each other. Naïve juvenile anemone fish, Amphiprion percula, were tested to see if they displayed antipredator responses to chemical alarm cues from four closely related heterospecific species (family Pomacentridae), a distantly related sympatric species (Asterropteryx semipunctatus) and a saltwater (control). Juveniles displayed significant reductions in foraging rate when exposed to all four confamilial heterospecific species but they did not respond to the distantly related sympatric species or the saltwater control. There was also a strong relationship between the intensity of the antipredator response and the extent to which species were related, with responses weakening as species became more distantly related. These findings demonstrate that chemical alarm cues are conserved within the pomacentrid family, providing juveniles with an innate recognition of heterospecific alarm cues as predicted by the phylogenetic relatedness hypothesis.  相似文献

This study investigated whether male body colour is a trait upon which females of Skiffia multipunctata, a viviparous fish of the subfamily Goodeinae, base their choice of potential mate. About 60% of the males in the study had black patches on the sides of their bodies and/or dorsal fins. Patches varied in number, size and distribution. Most males (70% of the fish in the study) had diffuse orange colouration on their flanks, mainly on the peduncle. The hypothesis was that, after controlling for differences in body size, females would choose males with more black or orange colouration than males with less exaggerated patches of colour. However, in contrast to this hypothesis, females preferentially approached the males with less black colouration. Since orange colouration did not have a significant effect on female response, and there was no correlation between black and orange colours on the males in the study, females rejected males with more black colouration rather than preferring males with more orange or other visible colours. These findings indicate that sexual selection by female mate choice is not driving black or orange male body colouration in Skiffia multipunctata.  相似文献

2010年6月-2011年8月,利用一字型、十字型、随机型和海拔垂直型4种相机布放模式在古田山国家级自然保护区拍摄兽类独立照片(independent photograph,IP)共2551张,能识别物种的兽类IP有1240张,占整体IP的48.6%,不能识别物种的兽类(松鼠科以外的啮齿动物)IP1167张,占45.8%;无效IP144张,占5.6%。所拍能识别物种的兽类共有14种,隶属4目9科,其中黑麂(Muntiacus crinifrons)为国家Ⅰ级保护动物,鬛羚(Naemo-rhedus sumatraensis)和黑熊(Selenarctos thibetanus)为国家Ⅱ级保护动物。在种-监测日曲线当中,4种监测模式随监测日的不断延长,兽类种类大体呈现半年左右趋于稳定的规律,建议监测时间以半年为一个周期较为合适。研究发现,兽类IP和单相机拍摄率在一字型、十字型和随机型之间不存在显著差异(P>0.05),但与海拔垂直型存在极显著差异(P<0.01)。海拔垂直型由于相机分布均匀,在拍摄种类、拍摄率等各项监测指标上都显著高于其他3种模式。  相似文献

Discriminating between black and white spruce (Picea mariana and Picea glauca) is a difficult palynological classification problem that, if solved, would provide valuable data for paleoclimate reconstructions. We developed an open-source visual recognition software (ARLO, Automated Recognition with Layered Optimization) capable of differentiating between these two species at an accuracy on par with human experts. The system applies pattern recognition and machine learning to the analysis of pollen images and discovers general-purpose image features, defined by simple features of lines and grids of pixels taken at different dimensions, size, spacing, and resolution. It adapts to a given problem by searching for the most effective combination of both feature representation and learning strategy. This results in a powerful and flexible framework for image classification. We worked with images acquired using an automated slide scanner. We first applied a hash-based “pollen spotting” model to segment pollen grains from the slide background. We next tested ARLO’s ability to reconstruct black to white spruce pollen ratios using artificially constructed slides of known ratios. We then developed a more scalable hash-based method of image analysis that was able to distinguish between the pollen of black and white spruce with an estimated accuracy of 83.61%, comparable to human expert performance. Our results demonstrate the capability of machine learning systems to automate challenging taxonomic classifications in pollen analysis, and our success with simple image representations suggests that our approach is generalizable to many other object recognition problems.  相似文献

The Midas cichlid ( Cichlasoma citrinellum ) of Nicaragua shows stable polychromatism in that a consistent, small proportion of the fish in nature lose their melanophores and thereby become gold-coloured. Before metamorphosis, all fish look alike. We asked whether the pre-transformed offspring of gold and normal morphs might differ in their morphological and physiological responses to white and to black backgrounds despite looking the same. More chromatophores developed in all juveniles exposed for two weeks to a black than to a white background. When moved from one background to the other, the fish adjusted to white faster than to black. Most importantly, genetically normal fish (N) colour-matched quicker than genetically gold fish (G) irrespective of the direction of change. Adjustment in G was also more variable, indicating poorer control. A parallel pattern was recorded photometrically in melanophores of excised scales: aggregation of pigment was faster than dispersion. And pigment in the melanophores of N aggregated and dispersed swifter than did those of G. Therefore, pre-metamorphosed juvenile G could be more vulnerable to predation than are juvenile N. This reveals a possible source of selection against the offspring of gold morphs before they become gold-coloured.  相似文献

Connectivity is a key factor in metacommunity ecology, because it influences dispersal and colonization rates. However, it has received less attention in aquatic than in terrestrial ecology research. We investigated whether connectivity is a good predictor of species richness in functional fish communities (freshwater, FS; estuarine, ES and estuarine-freshwater, EFS) from 31 coastal lakes in southern Brazil. We used a model selection approach, including lake area and distance from the ocean as additional predictors of species richness and two connectivity metrics: primary connectivity (C P) and estuarine connectivity (C E), which measure connectivity to neighboring lakes and system-wide connectivity, respectively. Both metrics estimate functional connectivity and were calculated on habitat-based cost distances. Connectivity was more important for predicting richness of functional communities than for total richness, particularly C E, which was distinctively related to each functional fish community richness (directly related to ES and EFS, and inversely related to FS; C P was related only to ES). Remarkably, connectivity was more important than area for predicting ES and EFS richness. These results add support to dispersal limitation as an important mechanism influencing fish communities. We suggest that incorporating environmental filters (habitat type) to quantify connectivity is useful for accessing the patterns of species richness.  相似文献

Males and females of Prokelisia marginata (Van Duzee) and Prokelisia dolusWilson communicate through substrate-transmitted vibrations. The acoustic signals (attraction and courtship calls) of these planthoppers are effective in mate location, attraction, and mate choice. Attraction calls are structurally distinct for both species and differ in pulse type, pulse repetition rate, and pulse duration. Using playback of prerecorded calls, individuals discriminated between conspecific and heterospecific signals. Depending on the sex and species, response calls were produced three to eight times more frequently to conspecifics than to heterospecifics. However, acoustic signals alone did not explain reproductive isolation and hybridization failure in these two congeners. Some heterospecific pairs called, courted, and attempted to join genitalia, but no connections were successful and no progeny were produced. Thus, acoustic behavior is not a guaranteed premating isolating mechanism in no-choice situations. Other courtship behaviors and possibly morphological differences in genitalia also contributed to their isolation. Females displayed a variety of rejection behaviors to conspecific and heterospecific males, suggesting that sexual selection (female choice), in addition to species recognition, may be an important force in the evolution of the acoustic signals of planthoppers. Although signal structure was not dependent on wing form (planthoppers exhibit wing dimorphism), the age when females first began to call was related to wing form. Brachypterous (flightless) females of both species began calling early in adult life (day 2), whereas macropterous (migratory) females began calling later in adult life (day 6). This pattern is consistent with the oogenesis-flight syndrome, in which reproductive maturity is delayed until after migration occurs.  相似文献
