The question of whether or not neural activity patterns recorded in the olfactory centres of the brain correspond to olfactory perceptual measures remains unanswered. To address this question, we studied olfaction in honeybees Apis mellifera using the olfactory conditioning of the proboscis extension response. We conditioned bees to odours and tested generalisation responses to different odours. Sixteen odours were used, which varied both in their functional group (primary and secondary alcohols, aldehydes and ketones) and in their carbon-chain length (from six to nine carbons).The results obtained by presentation of a total of 16 × 16 odour pairs show that (i) all odorants presented could be learned, although acquisition was lower for short-chain ketones; (ii) generalisation varied depending both on the functional group and the carbon-chain length of odours trained; higher generalisation was found between long-chain than between short-chain molecules and between groups such as primary and secondary alcohols; (iii) for some odour pairs, cross-generalisation between odorants was asymmetric; (iv) a putative olfactory space could be defined for the honeybee with functional group and carbon-chain length as inner dimensions; (v) perceptual distances in such a space correlate well with physiological distances determined from optophysiological recordings of antennal lobe activity. We conclude that functional group and carbon-chain length are inner dimensions of the honeybee olfactory space and that neural activity in the antennal lobe reflects the perceptual quality of odours.  相似文献

为了明确棉铃虫对苯乙醛和乙酸苯甲酯两种关键花香气味的联系性学习行为,在室内分别测定了不同学习训练的棉铃虫雌雄成虫对两种关键花香气味的选择偏好性反应和雄成虫的触角电位反应。偏好性测定结果表明,无花香气味接触经历的棉铃虫对苯乙醛和乙酸苯甲酯的选择频次均无显著差异,且单纯的花香气味接触经历也不能诱导棉铃虫气味偏好性的显著改变,唯有花香气味接触经历伴随蔗糖溶液进行强化训练时,才能诱导气味偏好性的显著性改变。从对两种花香气味的联系性学习看,棉铃虫更容易将苯乙醛与蔗糖溶液进行联系性学习,而不容易将乙酸苯甲酯与蔗糖溶液进行联系性学习。从性别差异看,雌虫比雄虫具有更强的将花香气味与蔗糖溶液进行联系性学习的能力。触角电位测定结果表明,不同学习训练的棉铃虫雄成虫对两种花香气味和绿叶气味顺-3-己烯-1-醇的EAG反应值之间不存在显著性差异。总之,花香气味伴随食物资源的联系性学习经历,能够明显提高棉铃虫成虫对花香气味的选择偏好,可以此为基础进一步优化花香引诱剂的配方设计和应用技术。  相似文献

The foraging behaviour of bumble bees is well documented for nectar and/or pollen gathering, but little is known about the learning processes underlying such behaviour. We report olfactory conditioning in worker bumble bees Bombus terrestris L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) obtained under laboratory conditions on restrained individuals. The protocol was adapted from the proboscis extension conditioning previously described in the honey bee Apis mellifera L. Bumble bees were found to be able to learn a pure odorant when it was presented in paired association with a sugar reward, but not when odour and reward were presented in an explicitly unpaired procedure. This suggests an associative basis for this olfactory learning. Bumble bees showed similar conditioning abilities when stimulated with two different floral odours. An effect of the sugar reward concentration on the learning performances was found.  相似文献

This study investigated the ability of the honeybee to discriminatebetween six compounds previously identified as oilseed rapefloral volatiles: linalool, 2-phenylethanol, methyl salicylate,benzyl alcohol, (E)-2-hexenal and 1-octen-3-ol. These componentswere tested individually or in a synthetic mixture for theirability to elicit the conditioned proboscis extension response.Three experiments were done: conditioning to the mixture atone concentration (1.0, 0.1 or 0.01 µg per component)and testing to the individual components either at the conditioningor at the other concentrations; conditioning to individual componentsand testing to the mixture (1.0 µg); conditioning andtesting to the individual components (1.0 µg). The resultsfrom the proboscis extension assay were then compared to thoseobtained from free-flying bees in a flight room. From the conditionedproboscis extension assay, a conditioning threshold level wasfound (0.1 µg for the mixture studied) below which a reliableconditioning could not be achieved. Recognition thresholds wereobserved: bees responded to concentrations ten-fold higher orlower than that used for conditioning. Responses to lower concentrationswere weaker, whilst responses were increased at concentrationshigher than the conditioning one. A hierarchy within the compoundstested was found, with linalool, 2-phenylethanol and methylsalicylate cueing mixture recognition more effectively thanthe other components. The ranking order of the six componentswas similar in both the conditioned proboscis extension andthe conditioned foraging behaviour in flight room. When conditionedand tested to the individual components, bees discriminateda learned odour from a number of others. However, the specificitylevel for the recognition of the learned odour varied accordingto the component, the most clearly discriminated being the compoundswhich were used by the bee in mixture recognition.  相似文献

Honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) were individually subjected to a classical conditioning procedure in order to obtain an olfactory conditioned proboscis extension response. To relate the behavioural response directly to antennal detection abilities, a technique was developped for coupling proboscis extension responses and electroantennogram recordings, with the stimulation being provided by the effluent of a gas chromatograph (GC). Bees were conditioned with a six-component mixture being part of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) floral volatiles, and tested with the individual components separated by GC. Responses of the conditioned bees were compared to those of unconditioned bees. No behavioural response was obtained in the control group, neither to the individual components nor to the mixture. Conditioning induced behavioural responses for three components, and an increase of electroantennogram responses for all components. A second experiment was conducted with an air entrainment extract of oilseed rape flower volatiles. Behavioural responses of conditioned and unconditioned bees were recorded. Responses obtained from conditioned bees tested with the air entrainment extract showed six groups of behaviourally active GC peaks. Unconditioned bees showed the same pattern of responses but at a lower level. The coupled technique described here appears to be a reliable tool for locating active components in a synthetic as well as in a natural mixture of floral volatiles. The effects of conditioning on odour discrimination and on its sensory correlates are discussed.  相似文献

Individually restrained worker bees were trained to recognize complex odors in a conditioned proboscis extension assay. Three groups of bees were considered, based on the responses recorded during the experimental procedure: selective learners, nonselective learners, and nonlearners. For conditioning, three concentrations of two synthetic mixtures were used. The distribution of bees between groups was not significantly affected by the nature or by the concentration of the conditioning mixture. After conditioning, bees were tested with the individual compounds, and the responses were analyzed with respect to the three groups. Selective learners showed discriminative responses to a few key compounds, while nonselective learners responded to all the compounds, and nonlearners to none. These results showed that complex odor recognition is based on the recognition of key components and relies on the ability of bees to learn.  相似文献

Humans can detect and differentiate the presence of different odours even at trace levels of these odorous compounds. The odour quantification of any particular samples is normally based on conventional panel decisions. Other analytical instruments could be used to detect trace levels of odorous molecules. This study presents the results of a biological sensor system subject to different odorants. The system consists of a sensor in which the isolated olfactory receptor proteins (ORPs) from bullfrogs (Rana spp.) were coated onto the surface of a piezoelectric (PZ) electrode, similar to the mechanism of human olfaction. The PZ crystal served as a signal transducer. The results indicate rapid (about 400 s), reversible, and longterm (up to 3 months) stable responses to different volatile compounds such as n-caproic acid, isoamyl acetate, n-decyl alcohol, beta-ionone, linalool, and ethyl caporate. The sensitivity of the sensor ranges from 10(-6)-10(-7) g, fully correlated with the olfactory threshold values of human noses. An array of six sensors consisting of five fractionated ORPs and one referenced phospholipid probe is able to respond to different odorants and form a typical fingerprint for each odorant.  相似文献

Olfactory processing of two odorants and their mixture was investigated in bumble bees Bombus terrestris using classical conditioning of the proboscis extension. In a standard procedure, workers were able to learn linalool, phenylacetaldehyde, and the mixture of these two components, with a similar level of response to these three stimuli. Thereafter, when we applied a differential conditioning procedure where one rewarded odorant was presented alternately against an unrewarded one, an asymmetrical discrimination between the two pure odors was found. Bumble bees performed well in the discriminative task when linalool was the rewarded stimulus and phenylacetaldehyde the unrewarded one, but they had difficulty learning phenylacetaldehyde if it was the rewarded odor in the symmetrical procedure. Indeed, unrewarded stimulations with linalool appeared to disrupt the learning of the alternative odor, possibly due to an innate biological meaning of linalool.  相似文献

Floral scent is a key mediator in many plant–pollinator interactions. It is known to vary not only among plant species, but also within species among populations. However, there is a big gap in our knowledge of whether such variability is the result of divergent selective pressures exerted by a variable pollinator climate or alternative scenarios (e.g., genetic drift). Cypripedium calceolus is a Eurasian deceptive lady’s-slipper orchid pollinated by bees. It is found from near sea level to altitudes of 2500 m. We asked whether pollinator climate and floral scents vary in a concerted manner among different altitudes. Floral scents of four populations in the Limestone Alps were collected by dynamic headspace and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Flower visitors and pollinators (the subset of visitors with pollen loads) were collected and identified. Preliminary coupled gas chromatographic and electroantennographic measurements with floral scents and pollinators revealed biologically active components. More than 70 compounds were detected in the scent samples, mainly aliphatics, terpenoids, and aromatics. Although several compounds were found in all samples, and all samples were dominated by linalool and octyl acetate, scents differed among populations. Similarly, there were strong differences in flower visitor spectra among populations with most abundant flower visitors being bees and syrphid flies at low and high altitudes, respectively. Pollinator climate differed also among populations; however, independent of altitude, most pollinators were bees of Lasioglossum, Andrena, and Nomada. Only few syrphids acted as pollinators and this is the first record of flies as pollinators in C. calceolus. The electrophysiological tests showed that bees and syrphid flies sensed many of the compounds released by the flowers, among them linalool and octyl acetate. Overall, we found that both floral scent and visitor/pollinator climate differ among populations. We discuss whether interpopulation variation in scent is a result of pollinator-mediated selection.  相似文献

In order to understand the biological significance of flower odour for attraction of mosquitoes, electrophysiological responses to headspace flower odour samples of Silene otites (L.) Wibel were investigated on Culex pipiens pipiens biotype molestus Forskal 1775 and Aedes aegypti L. using coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD). No remarkable differences in antennal responses to the odour compounds have been found between these two mosquito species. Further, the behavioural attractiveness of the electrophysiologically active compounds, singly or as multiple odour mixtures, was evaluated with bioassay experiments with C. pipiens molestus. In bioassays, C. pipiens responded to 14 electrophysiologically active compounds in different magnitudes (65–20%) and acetophenone, linalool oxide (pyranoid), phenyl acetaldehyde and phenylethyl alcohol were found as more attractive in comparison to the least attractive compound, hexanol. In two-stimulus choice test, mosquitoes were significantly more attracted to the mixture of the four most attractive compounds compared to the mixture of all 14 compounds. The results of present study confirm that floral odours are attractive cues for mosquitoes.  相似文献

Honey bees are important model systems for the investigation of learning and memory and for a better understanding of the neuronal basics of brain function. Honey bees also possess a rich repertoire of tones and sounds, from queen piping and quacking to worker hissing and buzzing. In this study, we tested whether the worker bees’ sounds can be used as a measure of learning. We therefore conditioned honey bees aversively to odours in a walking arena and recorded both their sound production and their movement. Bees were presented with two odours, one of which was paired with an electric shock. Initially, the bees did not produce any sound upon odour presentation, but responded to the electric shock with a strong hissing response. After learning, many bees hissed at the presentation of the learned odour, while fewer bees hissed upon presentation of another odour. We also found that hissing and movement away from the conditioned odour are independent behaviours that can co-occur but do not necessarily do so. Our data suggest that hissing can be used as a readout for learning after olfactory conditioning, but that there are large individual differences between bees concerning their hissing reaction. The basis for this variability and the possible ecological relevance of the bees’ hissing remain to be investigated.  相似文献

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) serve as important infochemicals, mediating several ecological interactions including herbivory and pollination. Atmospheric pollutants including traffic‐related air pollution may impair the detection of VOCs used by insects in insect–plant interactions. We investigated the indirect effect of petrol exhaust pollution on olfactory learning and memory (short and long term) in honey bees. Using appetitive olfactory conditioning, we trained bees to learn one of four floral VOC profiles; linalool, dipentene, myrcene and geranium. VOCs were unpolluted or polluted with exhaust collected from a petrol generator. Exhaust emissions included concentrations of CO (246.07 + 17 ppm), NO (20.50 + 6.90 ppb) and NO2 (20.93 + 0.05 ppb) consistent with those typically encountered in urban areas and near roads. Once bees had learnt the training VOC, we tested whether they could recognise that VOC 1 h, 24 h and 48 h post‐training. Bees took significantly longer to learn polluted VOCs and forgot them faster than unpolluted ones. We also tested the ‘masking’ potential of pollution on floral VOCs. Using gas chromatography mass spectroscopy we noted differences in the chemical profile of polluted versus unpolluted VOCs and tested whether bees could recognise polluted VOCs if trained using unpolluted ones. For several VOCs tested, bees could distinguish between polluted and unpolluted VOCs. Ultimately, our results show that air pollution changes the recognition and retention of floral VOCs by bees which may consequently impact foraging efficiency.  相似文献

Organisms often undergo shifts in habitats as their requirements change with ontogeny.Upon entering a new environment, it is vitally important to be able to rapidly assess predation risk. Predation pressure should selectively promote mechanisms that enable the rapid identification of novel predators. Here we tested the ability of a juvenile marine fish to simultaneously learn the identity of multiple previously unknown predators. Individuals were conditioned with a 'cocktail' of novel odours (from two predators and two non-predators) paired with either a conspecific alarm cue or a saltwater control and then tested for recognition of the four odours individually and two novel odours (one predator and one non-predator) the following day. Individuals conditioned with the 'cocktail' and alarm cue responded to the individual 'cocktail' odours with an antipredator response compared to controls. These results demonstrate that individuals acquire recognition of novel odours and that the responses were not due to innate recognition of predators or due to a generalised response to novel odours. Upon entering an unfamiliar environment prey species are able to rapidly assess the risk of predation, enhancing their chances of survival, through the assessment of chemical stimuli.  相似文献

Evaluation of combinations of flower odor compounds in the field revealed several compounds that were attractive or co-attractive with phenylacetaldehyde (PAA) to pest noctuid and pyralid moths. A number of moth species responded positively to the key floral odorant PAA. The floral odorants cis -jasmone, linalool, benzyl acetate, limonene, β-myrcene, methyl salicylate, and methyl 2-methoxybenzoate all increased captures of some moths when added to traps with PAA, but responses varied among the moth species that were trapped. For example, soybean looper moths, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), most strongly responded to PAA + β-myrcene, but benzyl acetate, cis -jasmone, and limonene also increased captures of these moths when these compounds were used in traps along with PAA. Velvetbean caterpillar moths, Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), responded most strongly to PAA + linalool, but β-myrcene, cis -jasmone, and limonene also increased captures of these moths in traps over numbers trapped with PAA. Positive responses to floral compound blends were also noted for golden looper [ Argyrogramma verruca (F.)], grass looper [ Mocis disseverans (Walker)], tobacco budworm [ Heliothis virescens (F.)], southern armyworm [ Spodoptera eridania (Stoll) (all Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)], and melonworm [ Diaphania hyalinata (L.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)]. Overall, PAA + β-myrcene appeared to be the strongest floral compound combination for pest species trapped, compared to PAA or other compound blends.  相似文献

The Apocynaceae–Asclepiadoideae are well known for their specialized floral morphologies and pollination systems and many species have distinct floral aromas. However, our knowledge on the chemistry of floral volatiles in this plant family is relatively limited although it has been suspected that floral scent plays a key function for pollinator attraction. This is the third paper in a series of papers reporting on the floral odours of Asclepiadoideae. Floral odours of eleven species from seven genera (Cibirhiza, Fockea, Gymnema, Hoya, Marsdenia, Stephanotis and Telosma) of early diverging taxa of Apocynaceae–Asclepiadoideae, and two species of Secamone (Apocynaceae–Secamonoideae) were collected using headspace sampling and then analyzed via GC–MS. We detected 151 compounds, of which 103 were identified. The vast majority of chemicals identified are common components in flower odour bouquets of angiosperms. However, striking was the high relative amount of acetoin (97.6%) in the flower scent of Cibirhiza albersiana. This compound has rarely been reported as a flower scent component and is more commonly found in fermentation odours. Bray–Curtis similarities and Nonmetric-Multidiminsional Scaling (NMDS) analyses showed that each of the species has a distinct odour pattern. This is mostly due to only twelve compounds which singly or in different combinations dominated the scent of the species: the benzenoids benzyl acetate, benzaldehyde, methyl benzoate, and 2-phenylethyl alcohol; the monoterpenoids (E)-ocimene, (Z)-ocimene, linalool, and eucalyptol; and the aliphatic compounds acetoin, and (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal. The floral scent compositions are discussed in relation to tribal affiliations and their potential role for pollinator attraction, and are compared with the scent data available from other Asclepiadoideae species.  相似文献

Insects are capable of detecting, and discriminating between, a very large number of odours. The biological relevance of many of those odours, particularly those related to food, must first be learned. Given that the number of sensory receptors and antennal lobe (AL) glomeruli is limited relative to the number of odours that must be detectable, this ability implies that the olfactory system makes use of a combinatorial coding scheme whereby each sensory cell or AL projection neuron can participate in coding for several different odours. An important step in understanding this coding scheme is to behaviourally quantify the degree to which sets of odours are discriminable. Here we evaluate odour discriminability in the fruit fly,Drosophila melanogaster, by first conditioning individual flies to not respond to any of several odourants using a nonassociative conditioning protocol (habituation). We show that flies habituate unconditioned leg movement responses to both mechanosensory and olfactory stimulation over 25 unreinforceed trials. Habituation is retained for at least 2 h and is subject to dishabituation. Finally, we test the degree to which the conditioned response generalizes to other odourants based on molecular features of the odourants (e.g. carbon chain length and the presence of a target functional group). These tests reveal predictable generalization gradients across these molecular features. These data substantiate the claim that these features are relevant coding dimensions in the fruit fly olfactory system, as has been shown for other insect and vertebrate species.  相似文献

The housefly, Musca domestica, was conditioned to odours using the proboscis extension response to labellar stimulation with sucrose solution as an unconditioned response and the properties of conditioning were investigated. Among trials including forward pairing of the conditioned stimulus (CS) with the unconditioned stimulus (US), backward pairing and isolated presentations of CS and US, only forward pairing is effective on the acquisition of conditioning. Backward pairing combined with forward pairing does not influence the effectiveness of the forward pairing. CS given overlapping with a US presentation permits only weak conditioning. The acquisition of conditioning decreases with increase of the CS-US interval. In the differential conditioning situation to two odours, discriminative responses are observed. In the flies conditioned with one antenna, the conditioned response is elicited not only by stimulation of the antenna used for conditioning but also by stimulation of the antenna not used for conditioning, although the response using the former is higher than with the latter. The ability to be conditioned is reduced immediately after fastening on a clay bed and increases with time. Ability can also be improved by transection of the ventral nerve cord.  相似文献

We investigated the ability of honeybees, Apis mellifera, to use olfactory information gained in a given experimental context, in other contexts. First, restrained bees were subjected to a Pavlovian associative learning procedure, based on the conditioning of the proboscis extension response (PER), where a floral odour was paired with a sugar reward. We observed the orientation behaviour of conditioned and na?ve bees in a four-armed olfactometer with four contiguous fields either scented with the conditioning odour or unscented. Information transfer was clearly shown, conditioned bees orienting towards the conditioning odour, whilst na?ve bees shunned it. Second, the effect of passive olfactory exposures during the bees' development was assessed in two behavioural contexts: either orientation in the olfactometer or a PER conditioning procedure. Two exposure periods were applied: (1) the pupal stage (9 days before emergence); (2) the early adult stage (8 days after emergence). No effect of preimaginal exposure was recorded, but exposure during the early adult stage induced a higher choice frequency of the odour field in the olfactometer, and lower learning performance in the PER conditioning assay. These observations show that olfactory information gained during development can modify bees' later behaviour in different contexts: this is another instance of olfactory information transfer in bees. These results also suggest that nonassociative learning phenomena, taking place at a critical period during development, might be involved in the maturation of the bees' olfactory system, and in the organization of odour-mediated behaviours. In Southeast Asia the native honey bee species Apis cerana is often attacked by hornets (Vespa velutina), mainly in the period from April to November. During the co-evolution of these two species honey bees have developed several strategies to defend themselves such as learning the odors of hornets and releasing alarm components to inform other mates. However, so far little is known about whether and how honey bees modulate their olfactory learning in the presence of the hornet predator and alarm components of honey bee itself. In the present study, we test for associative olfactory learning of A. cerana in the presence of predator odors, the alarm pheromone component isopentyl acetate (IPA), or a floral odor (hexanal) as a control. The results show that bees can detect live hornet odors, that there is almost no association between the innately aversive hornet odor and the appetitive stimulus sucrose, and that IPA is less well associated with an appetitive stimulus when compared with a floral odor. In order to imitate natural conditions, e.g. when bees are foraging on flowers and a predator shows up, or alarm pheromone is released by a captured mate, we tested combinations of the hornet odor and floral odor, or IPA and floral odor. Both of these combinations led to reduced learning scores. This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the prey-predator system between A. cerana and V. velutina.  相似文献

Abstract:  Campoletis chlorideae Uchida (Hym., Ichneumonidae) is an important solitary koinobiont larval endoparasitoid of many noctuid species including Mythmna separata (Lep., Noctuidae). In the present study, maize volatiles induced by feeding damage of M. separata were found to be attractive to C. chlorideae in a Y-tube olfactometer. Eleven compounds were released in significant amounts from M. separata -infested maize seedlings, of which five compounds, ( Z )-3-hexen-1-ol, ( Z )-3-hexenyl acetate, ( E )-2-hexenal, linalool and phenylethyl acetate were chosen for electrophysiological and behavioural tests. All five compounds elicited electroantennogram responses in C. chlorideae . However, only pure ( Z )-3-hexenyl acetate and linalool were attractive to the parasitoid in the Y-tube. Interestingly, linalool was also attractive to starved parasitoids over a range of doses tested. These results suggested that ( Z )-3-hexenyl acetate and linalool may be key infochemicals in the host-foraging behaviour of C. chlorideae , and linalool may act as a food-source signal for the parasitoid.  相似文献
