The effect of flowering time and of distance between pollen donor and pollen recipient on the proportion of filled achenes, aborted seeds, and seedling survivorship was studied in populations of Espeletia schultzii in the Venezuelan Andes. Hand-pollinations were performed in two different years and at different times during the flowering season. Pollinations within-population included crosses between plants within a few meters to a maximum of 500 m apart and between-population pollinations included crosses between plants more than 10 km and up to 78 km away. Late in the flowering season, plants suffered a reduction in the proportion of filled achenes and an increase in aborted seeds. The proportion of filled achenes and aborted seeds did not vary significantly between the distances between pollen and ovules in crosses done early in the flowering season. However, the proportion of filled achenes in crosses between individuals within 30 m distance were very variable, either very successful or not successful. Beyond 30 m, for some of the populations, the frequency of unsuccessful crosses was almost 0. This pattern was observed at three elevation sites in two consecutive years. When crosses were done late in the flowering season, the proportion of filled achenes was lower in crosses between close individuals and between very distant ones. Seedling survivorship varied significantly between the crossing distances at the higher elevation only. The results show that a clear effect of the incompatibility alleles on the crossing success of the plants is present in the different populations examined, while they suggest that the effect of inbreeding or outcrossing depression is less clear but might still be present only under certain conditions. Late in the season, when plants might have fewer resources available for reproduction and at the high and intermediate site where cold and dry environmental conditions are less favorable for the plants, the discrimination among distances was stronger.  相似文献

The reproductive capacity in nine Mexican Douglas-fir populations was determined by analyzing seed production traits from 144 trees collected in 2001. Significant variation was found for all traits among populations; they contributed between 21% and 43% of total phenotypic variation found in these traits, indicating broad differences in reproductive capacity for that particular year. Seed efficiency (filled seed/seed potential) varied from 14% to 42% among populations; all populations from Central Mexico had a seed efficiency below 25%. The proportion of developed that were empty seeds varied from 0.40 to 0.81 among populations, whereas seed size varied also from 0.88 to 1.21 g per 100 seeds among them. Average ratio of filled seed weight to cone weight (reproductive efficiency) was 29.6 mg g−1, but it varied three-fold between populations with extreme values. Populations with larger cones had greater seed potential and heavier seed but not necessarily higher reproductive or seed efficiency. Most reproductive indicators were significantly correlated with latitude, with lower values in the marginal populations from Central Mexico, in the southern extreme of the species range. Given these results, the need for conservation of Douglas-fir populations in Central Mexico is discussed.  相似文献

Restricted gene dispersion – resulting from both self-pollination and limited capability of pollen migration, as well as seed dispersion at short distances – has been considered the main reason for spatial genetic structuring in plant populations. This study evaluated the intrapopulation genetic structure and the mating system in four populations of Solanum lycocarpum, a woody bush occurring in Brazilian Cerrado vegetation. Two hundred and twenty-four individuals were genotyped through five nuclear SSR loci (30 alleles) and six cpSSR loci (82 haplotypes). The study evidenced that the species mates predominantly by outcrossings , that biparental inbreeding is not common, and that there are almost 10 trees participating as pollen donors per mother-tree. The populations were formed by many mother lineages, indicating efficient seed dispersion by the fauna and the occurrence of multiple foundation events. Spatial genetic structure was observed in three populations (average Sp=0.0184 ± 0.0030) and it resulted from both restricted seed dispersion and from vegetative reproduction. During the collection of seeds for ex situ conservation, seeds must be gathered from 150 to 200 mother trees, so that the effective size of 500 individuals is retained. The sampling must comprise the biggest possible number of populations in a wide area to enable the maintenance of the biggest possible haplotypic diversity.  相似文献

很多植物的花,其柱头上接受的花粉供体多样性数量通常与果实成熟和种子产出有关。关于提高花粉多样性能否增加植物的生殖产出问题,文献中时常有相互矛盾的结论。本研究通过对自交不亲和性植物文冠果(Xanthoceras sorbifolium)进行1、2、3、4种花粉供体传粉实验,调查了不同花粉供体数量对文冠果雌性生殖的影响。结果表明,增加亲和花粉供体的多样性,一定程度上提高了花序上果实的坐果数量,同时也增加了果实中种子的数量及单粒种子重量。对文冠果授以4种亲和性花粉供体后,花序上成熟果实的平均数最多;3种亲和性花粉供体传粉后,每个果实中的种子数最多,单粒种子也最重。如果混合花粉中含有自交花粉,那么果实将败育。除花粉多样性影响雌性生殖产出外,母本基因型也具有重要影响,即增加文冠果种植品系的多样性,将有助于提高果实和种子产量。本研究还讨论了花粉遗传多样性效应、母本交配选择及果实选择性败育假说。  相似文献

Macadamia tetraphyll a is a subtropical rain forest tree from fragmented lowlands in eastern Australia. Owing to habitat loss and fragmentation, this commercially important species is vulnerable to extinction. Breeding system and fecundity were investigated in nine populations incorporating three habitat types (moderately disturbed, highly disturbed, and intact) to determine if seed set, seed weight, and genetic diversity are compromised by disturbance. Breeding success was also tested using pollen donors from distant (30–100 km), local (2–3 km), neighbor (10–20 m), and near-neighbor (< 10 m) sources. Macadamia tetraphylla is weakly self-compatible but incapable of automatic self-pollination. Across populations, seed to flower ratios were always < 0.1 percent in open-pollinated trees and trees from moderately disturbed habitats had the highest fruit production. Outcross pollen produced more seed per raceme than open-pollinated or self-pollination treatments. Seed set and seed weights were positively influenced by pollen source with local pollen and distant pollen effecting more or heavier seeds. Germination rates and genetic diversity did not vary significantly in seedlings from different pollen sources. Results suggest a pollen source from at least a 2 km distance is an optimal outbreeding distance; however, many wild populations do not have conspecifics at optimal distances owing to habitat fragmentation. Highly disturbed populations are producing seed but the longevity of these sites is threatened by weed invasions. We conclude that small populations in degraded habitats that are at risk of being overlooked should not be ignored but should be a focus for restoration efforts as they are a valuable asset for the conservation of M. tetraphylla .  相似文献

Since pollen usually travels limited distances in wind-pollinated plant species, plants growing at low density may become pollen limited. We examined how local pollen availability and population density affect reproductive success in two wind-pollinated, dioecious species, Thalictrum fendleri and Thalictrum dioicum. Distance to the nearest flowering male, the number of flowering males within 2 m, and flower number on those males served as measures of local pollen availability. Increased distance from pollen donors reduced seed set in the lowest-density population of each species, but seed set in high-density populations was not correlated with local pollen availability. For plants in high- and low-density populations at similar distances from pollen donors, this distance only affected seed set in low-density populations. To ensure that differences in resource availability were not causing spurious correlations between seed set and plant density, we constructed low-density artificial arrays in populations of T. dioicum. In these, seed set decreased rapidly with increases in distance from pollen donors. Despite these effects, the density of males in a population was not correlated with average seed set in T. dioicum, and hand pollination in the T. dioicum populations also failed to increase seed set over natural levels. These results suggest that pollen receipt only limits seed set on isolated plants within low- density populations of T. dioicum and T. fendleri.  相似文献

For sexual selection to be important in plants, it must occur at pollen load sizes typical of field populations. However, studies of the impact of pollen load size on pollen competition have given mixed results, perhaps because so few of these studies directly examined the outcome of mating when pollen load size was varied. We asked whether seed paternity after mixed pollination of wild radish was affected by pollen load sizes ranging from 22 to 220 pollen grains per stigma. We examined the seed siring abilities of 12 pollen donors across 11 maternal plants. Seed paternity was statistically indistinguishable across the pollen load sizes even though, overall, the pollen donors sired different numbers of seeds. This lack of effect of pollen load size on seed paternity may have occurred because fruit abortion and early abortion or failure of fertilization of seeds increased as load size decreased. Thus, failures of fruits and seeds sired by poorer pollen donors may keep seed paternity constant across pollen load sizes.  相似文献

The range expansion of a plant species begins with colonization of ecological empty patches from posterior source populations. This process involves stochastic loss of genetic diversity. However, the founder population could restore genetic diversity by gene flow from posterior populations via seeds and pollen and its recovery affects evolutionary potential for species expansion. To clarify the recovery process of genetic diversity during species range expansion, gene flow via seeds and pollen was investigated at the expansion front of Fagus crenata. Based on eight nuclear microsatellite genotypes of a total of 150 individuals and 225 seeds at the northernmost leading-edge population, genetic diversity, fine-scale spatial genetic structure (FSGS), and genetic differentiation from other five northern populations were investigated. Moreover, both seed and pollen immigration and their effects on genetic diversity at different successional stages were analyzed. The leading-edge population showed lower genetic diversity and substantial genetic differentiation, reflecting its strong genetic drift. Non-significant FSGS and a negative inbreeding coefficient for mature trees may indicate that the earliest generation consisted of founders from foreign seed sources. The significant proportion of seed and pollen immigration increased the number of different alleles for later successional stages. The effective number of pollen parents from foreign sources (20.8) was markedly higher than that from the local source (2.1). These results indicated that pollen immigration incorporated new and rare alleles and increased the genetic diversity of the population. However, the proportion of foreign gene flow decreased during succession, probably due to the increased reproductive success of local individuals as they reached maturity and grew in size.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to elucidate the sources of seed size variation in Hydrophyllum appendiculatum, an outcrossing, biennial plant. The genetic basis of seed size variation was examined with a diallel breeding design. The analysis did not reveal any evidence for additive genetic variance, suggesting that seed size could not evolve in response to natural selection. A series of greenhouse experiments was conducted to determine the sensitivity of seed weight to a number of ecological variables. Seed weight was affected by inbreeding depression: seeds produced by self-pollinations were significantly lighter that outcrossed seeds. Maternal plants did not differentially provision seeds that were the result of crosses between subpopulations (separated by 300 m) or between populations (separated by 1.7 km). Mean seed size was independent of the number of outcrossed pollen donors (one vs. many) that sired seeds on an inflorescence; however, the variance was greater on inflorescences pollinated by multiple donors. Direct manipulations of the abiotic environment showed that seed size was greater on plants growing under full sunlight compared to shaded plants. Seed size was unaffected by soil type, fertilizer addition, or defoliation. Finally, I determined the effect of varying pollination intensity at the level of a single inflorescence, and at the whole plant level. Seed weight was greatest on plants that had only 1 and 5 inflorescences pollinated, and least on those that had 10 and 20 pollinated. At the inflorescence level, seed weights were greatest on those where all flowers were pollinated, compared to inflorescences where only half of the flowers were pollinated. Perhaps the greatest contributor to variance in seed size in this species was the temporal decline within plants through the flowering season. These results indicate that maternal plants are not capable of producing uniform seed crops. Rather, the final distribution of seed size produced by plants within a population will necessarily vary and be the result of pollination effects, heterogeneity in the abiotic environment, and developmental constraints.  相似文献

The mating system of a species is an essential factor that determines the genotypic frequencies of its populations in each generation. Thus, knowledge in this regard is important in the application of practical measures in conservation and forest tree breeding. Austrocedrus chilensis (D.DON) PIC. SER. ET BIZZARRI is a member of the Cupressaceae native to the Andean–Patagonian Forest of Argentina and Chile with regional economic importance. It is a dioecious tree with pollen and seeds distributed by wind. Isozyme markers were utilized to study the mating system of this species through the survey of individual effective pollen clouds in a natural low-density population. If random mating occurs, effective pollen clouds that pollinate single seed trees are expected to be genetically homogeneous. The classical HardyWeinberg test of panmixia was also performed. Although it failed to reject random mating, the analysis of the pollen clouds showed that this mating pattern does not occur. Evidence of locally distributed heterogeneous pollen clouds is presented. It has been suggested that abortion of ovules in perennials is caused partly by early acting genetic load (abortions due to ‘bad offspring’). However, it is still unclear what proportion of abortions of naturally pollinated seeds are due to early genetic load. Here we suggest that variation between maternal genotypes (abortions due to ‘bad maternal genotypes’) may be an even more important factor causing genetic abortions than early load, based on results from Scots pine. The early load is severe in Scots pine: in experimental self-pollinations on average 76% of the seeds were aborted. Comparison of naturally pollinated and experimentally cross-pollinated seeds showed that the abortion rate of naturally pollinated seeds was only slightly, and not statistically significantly, higher than that of experimentally cross-pollinated seeds (30% vs. 26.5%, respectively). Thus, although early load can be high under self-pollination in Scots pine, it does not account for a high share of abortions of naturally pollinated seeds. Instead, maternal genotype determined the seed abortion rate: in a separate experiment using an experimental population (clonal stand), 29% of the total variance in seed abortion was due to variation between maternal genotypes. We studied further whether ‘bad maternal genotypes’ could be explained by trade-offs between seed abortion and other fitness functions. Only one statistically significant genetic correlation was found, a positive association between cone production and successful seed development. Thus ‘bad maternal genotypes’ aborted a higher proportion of their seed and produced less cones than the ‘good maternal genotypes’. Restricted seed dispersal frequently leads to fine‐scale spatial genetic structure (i.e., FSGS) within plant populations. Depending on its spatial extent and the mobility of pollinators, this inflated kinship at the immediate neighbourhood can critically impoverish pollen quality. Despite the common occurrence of positive FSGS within plant populations, our knowledge regarding the role of long‐distance pollination preventing reproductive failure is still limited. Using microsatellite markers, we examined the existence of positive FSGS in two low‐density populations of the tree Pyrus bourgaeana. We also designed controlled crosses among trees differing in their kinship to investigate the effects of increased local kinship on plant reproduction. We used six pollination treatments and fully monitored fruit production, fruit and seed weight, proportion of mature seeds per fruit, and seed germination. Our results revealed positive FSGS in both study populations and lower fruit initiation in flowers pollinated with pollen from highly‐genetically related individuals within the neighbourhood, with this trend intensifying as the fruit development progressed. Besides, open‐pollinated flowers exhibited lower performance compared to those pollinated by distant pollen donors, suggesting intense qualitative pollen limitation in natural populations. We found positive fine‐scale spatial genetic structure is translated into impoverished pollen quality from nearby pollen donors which negatively impacts the reproductive success of trees in low‐density populations. Under this scenario of intrapopulation genetic rescue by distant pollen donors, the relevance of highly‐mobile pollinators for connecting spatially and genetically distant patches of trees may be crucial to safeguarding population recruitment.  相似文献

Some of the factors governing seed-set in three populations ofLythrum salicaria are examined during two seasons. Plants spatially segregated from legitimate neighbours by distances exceeding 1m set few seeds. Plants with small inflorescences set fewer seeds than those with medium or large inflorescences. Flowers having self pollen applied to the stigma before legitimate pollination set fewer seed per flower than those pollinated with legitimate pollen only. Seeds of the mid-style morph germinated more effectively than those of the long style morph and seeds of the short-style morph showed very low levels of germination.  相似文献

Pollen limitation and resource limitation have been documented as the major factors responsible for plants commonly producing more ovules than seeds, but few studies have examined pollen deposition directly in natural populations at different sites and times. We investigated the causes of low seed set in four populations of Liriodendron chinense (Magnoliaceae), an insect‐pollinated endangered tree endemic to southern China, over 2–3 years. One pistil potentially produces two ovules. The number of pistils per flower varies among populations, but in three of the four populations the variation in a given population was not significantly different among years. Overall, populations with higher pistil numbers tend to set more seeds per flower, but a positive correlation between pistil numbers and seed production per flower was observed in only one of the four populations. The numbers of pollen grains deposited per stigma varied from 0 to 60. The proportion of pollinated stigmas per flower ranged from 44% to 88% among populations and years. The numbers of pollen grains deposited per stigma and the percentages of pollinated stigmas were significantly different between populations, and two populations showed significant differences between years. A positive correlation between stigmatic pollen load and seed set was sought in ten population‐by‐year combinations but, in a given population, high stigmatic pollen loads did not always result in high seed set. Examination of pollen deposition, pistil and seed production over several sites and years showed that in addition to pollination, other factors such as resource or genetic loads were likely to limit the (lower than 10%) seed set in L. chinense. Summary I examined the effects of pollen loads containing pollen from one, three and five donors on fruit production and fruit quality in Campsis radicans. Number of pollen donors had no significant effect on % fruit production, seed number, seed weight or seed germination. In singledonor pollinations the identity of the donor did have a strong effect on the above parameters. Furthermore, the best single donor sired fruits with more seeds and heavier seeds than any mixture containing this donor. This pattern indicates interference of pollens or preemption of some ovules by the inferior pollen. In Campsis, therefore, the number of pollen donors contributing to a pollen load is less important than the identity of these donors in determining fruit production and fruit quality. Seeds from fruits resulting from mixed pollination were slightly more variable than seeds from fruits resulting from single-donor pollinations.  相似文献

Summary Differential male reproductive success was studied in clones at two seed orchards of Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco. The performance of tester pollen parents was compared in controlled pollinations with two-parent pollen mixes. Marker pollen homozygous for a rare IDH allele was the genetic marker in each pollen mix. The resulting seeds were analyzed electrophoretically. At both seed orchards, the proportion of seeds sired by tester pollen significantly varied among the tester pollen parents. Tester pollen parents did not perform the same across all seed parents. The significant interaction effect was evidence of male-female complementarity. These results suggest a genetic basis to differential male reproductive success in Douglas fir.  相似文献

1 In the dioecious, perennial herb Silene dioica , the density of pollen donors in a population is determined by overall plant density, the sex ratio and the proportion of plants infected with the anther-smut fungus Microbotryum violaceum , which results in permanent sterility of both male and female plants.
2 Pollinators ( Bombus spp.) were found to prefer male flowers and to avoid diseased flowers. This may result in an overall lower visitation frequency and increased risk for pollen limitation in populations with a low density of males or a high incidence of disease.
3 Compared with open-pollinated flowers, hand pollination resulted in a significant increase in the number of seeds produced per fruit in populations with an experimentally reduced proportion of males (25% and 50% male flowers) but not in a naturally male-dominated population (75% male flowers). Seed production per plant was increased by hand pollination only in the most female-dominated population. Because the floral sex ratio is often male-biased, resources rather than pollen availability are likely to set the upper limit for total seed production per individual in most healthy populations of S. dioica.
4 There was a negative relationship between seed set and incidence of disease across 22 populations in both years of a field study. However, there was no consistent difference between the responses of highly diseased populations (incidence 30–56%) and populations with a low disease incidence (incidence 0–8%) to hand pollination.
5 In a greenhouse experiment with cloned hand-pollinated females, the presence of spores on healthy flowers was found to reduce seed set significantly. In highly diseased populations, therefore, the frequent deposition of spores by flower visitors onto remaining healthy plants may decrease seed production below the potential level determined by resources or pollen availability.  相似文献

A series of strains of the homozygous speciesOenothera grandiflora (characterized by the genome BB and plastome III) were combined with plastome IV fromO. parviflora (BC-IV) by means of appropriate crosses. An incompatibility between genome B and plastome IV is expressed in the haplo- and diplophase: (1) B-IV pollen, though normally developed, is largely inactive. The extent of the inactivation varies between different strains and shows a seasonal fluctuation as determined by seed set in outcrossing and selfing experiments. (2) In most of the strains lethality of BB-IV embryos is the rule, leading to empty seeds. This can be ameliorated by including another plastome in the zygotes and developing embryos on account of the biparental plastid transmission inOenothera. It can best be demonstrated in crosses with a seed parent having normal green plastids of plastome IV and mutated chlorophyll deficient plastids from a different plastome in the pollen parent, leading to variegated progeny as well as a remainder of empty seeds. (3) In about one-half of the strains the BB-IV plants exhibit a temporary bleaching of thevirescens type. The incompatibily between genome B and plastome IV does not support the earlier assumption that plastome IV is the ancestor of plastomes II, III, and V. Instead, a precursor plastome is postulated from which plastomes II, III, and IV are descended. 大别山五针松是典型的风媒传粉植物,花粉流是种群基因流的重要形式。用重力玻片法研究大别山五针松母树林的花粉飞散特征,分析了时间和空间对花粉飞散的影响,结合林分密度和气象因子探讨花粉飞散的特点。结果表明:大别山五针松从5月中旬开始传粉,散粉期为14d,盛粉期为3d,种植密度低的下坡花粉密度比密度大的上坡的要高。日散粉最大值出现在10:00~14:00,植株中上部花粉密度较高,距花粉源50m处花粉密度最高。建议对种植密度大的区域移栽以促进花芽生成,以保证结实率与提高种子品质。  相似文献

Reticulate and microechinate pollen forms withinSilene latifolia (S. alba, S. pratensis) were first described from N. America, where the species is an introduced weed. A previous study showed that the two forms also exist in Europe and intergrade along a zone roughly congruent with intergradation zones in seed morphology and flavone glycosylation genotypes. The present survey of pollen from herbarium specimens is more extensive and covers localities from nearly the whole of the species' native Eurasian and North African range. The first axis of a detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) of qualitative characterstate data for 11 pollen morphological characters shows a gradient between the two extreme exine types, reticulate and microechinate. When mapped, the co-ordinates of pollen samples on this axis indicate a broad zone of intergradation which coincides approximately with the somewhat sharper transition between low- and high-tubercle seeds in C. and N. Europe, but becomes diffuse in Italy and the Mediterranean region and diverges from the seed transition zone in SW. Asia and the Middle East. The biological significance of the pollen morphs is unknown; the variation pattern in pollen morphology, unlike that in seeds, is not consistently correlated with macroclimate.  相似文献
