Selective brain cooling (SBC) is defined as a brain temperature cooler than the temperature of arterial blood from the trunk. Surrogate measures of arterial blood temperature have been used in many published studies on SBC. The use of a surrogate for arterial blood temperature has the potential to confound proper identification of SBC. We have measured brain, carotid blood, and rectal temperatures in conscious sheep exposed to 40, 22, and 5 degrees C. Rectal temperature was consistently higher than arterial blood temperature. Brain temperature was consistently cooler than rectal temperature during all exposures. Brain temperature only fell below carotid blood temperature during the final few hours of 40 degrees C exposure and not at all during the 5 degrees C exposure. Consequently, using rectal temperature as a surrogate for arterial blood temperature does not provide a reliable indication of the status of the SBC effector. We also show that rapid suppression of SBC can result if the animals are disturbed.  相似文献

Selective brain cooling (SBC) is defined as the lowering of brain temperature below arterial blood temperature. Artiodactyls employ a carotid rete, an anatomical heat exchanger, to cool arterial blood shortly before it enters the brain. The survival advantage of this anatomy traditionally is believed to be a protection of brain tissue from heat injury, especially during exercise. Perissodactyls such as horses do not possess a carotid rete, and it has been proposed that their guttural pouches serve the heat-exchange function of the carotid rete by cooling the blood that traverses them, thus protecting the brain from heat injury. We have tested this proposal by measuring brain and carotid artery temperature simultaneously in free-living horses. We found that despite evidence of cranial cooling, brain temperature increased by about 2.5 degrees C during exercise, and consistently exceeded carotid temperature by 0.2-0.5 degrees C. We conclude that cerebral blood flow removes heat from the brain by convection, but since SBC does not occur in horses, the guttural pouches are not surrogate carotid retes.  相似文献

To investigate the role of the angularis oculi vein (AOV) in selective brain cooling (SBC), we measured brain and carotid blood temperatures in six adult female Dorper sheep. Halfway through the study, a section of the AOV, just caudal to its junction with the dorsal nasal vein, was extirpated on both sides. Before and after AOV surgery, the sheep were housed outdoors at 21-22°C and were exposed in a climatic chamber to daytime heat (40°C) and water deprivation for 5 days. In sheep outdoors, SBC was significantly lower after the AOV had been cut, with its 24-h mean reduced from 0.25 to 0.01°C (t(5) = 3.06, P = 0.03). Carotid blood temperature also was lower (by 0.28°C) at all times of day (t(5) = 3.68, P = 0.01), but the pattern of brain temperature was unchanged. The mean threshold temperature for SBC was not different before (38.85 ± 0.28°C) and after (38.85 ± 0.39°C) AOV surgery (t(5) =0.00, P = 1.00), but above the threshold, SBC magnitude was about twofold less after surgery. SBC after AOV surgery also was less during heat exposure and water deprivation. However, SBC increased progressively by the same magnitude (0.4°C) over the period of water deprivation, and return of drinking water led to rapid cessation of SBC in sheep before and after AOV surgery. We conclude that the AOV is not the only conduit for venous drainage contributing to SBC in sheep and that, contrary to widely held opinion, control of SBC does not involve changes in the vasomotor state of the AOV.  相似文献

A three-dimensional mathematical model was developed to examine the induction of selective brain cooling (SBC) in the human brain by intracarotid cold (2.8 degrees C) saline infusion (ICSI) at 30 ml/min. The Pennes bioheat equation was used to propagate brain temperature. The effect of cooled jugular venous return was investigated, along with the effect of the circle of Willis (CoW) on the intracerebral temperature distribution. The complete CoW, missing A1 variant (mA1), and fetal P1 variant (fP1) were simulated. ICSI induced moderate hypothermia (defined as 32-34 degrees C) in the internal carotid artery (ICA) territory within 5 min. Incorporation of the complete CoW resulted in a similar level of hypothermia in the ICA territory. In addition, the anterior communicating artery and ipsilateral posterior communicating artery distributed cool blood to the contralateral anterior and ipsilateral posterior territories, respectively, imparting mild hypothermia (35 and 35.5 degrees C respectively). The mA1 and fP1 variants allowed for sufficient cooling of the middle cerebral territory (30-32 degrees C). The simulations suggest that ICSI is feasible and may be the fastest method of inducing hypothermia. Moreover, the effect of convective heat transfer via the complete CoW and its variants underlies the important role of CoW anatomy in intracerebral temperature distributions during SBC.  相似文献

The mechanism of selective brain cooling (SBC) allows the brain to remain cooler than the rest of the body. This paper aims to provide new ideas to better understand SBC, emphasizing how it works, how it is controlled and what its role is. There are two distinct types of SBC in homeotherms: (1) using precooling of arterial blood destined for the brain, with cool venous blood returning from the nose and head skin, (2) using venous blood to cool the brain directly. There is a common mechanism of control of SBC intensity. Reduced sympathetic activity leads to simultaneous dilation of the angular oculi veins, supplying the intracranial heat exchangers, and constriction of the facial veins, supplying the heart. Therefore, SBC is enhanced during heat exposure, endurance exercise, relaxed wakefulness and NREM sleep, and vanishes in the cold and during emotional distress. SBC is a multifunctional effector mechanism: it protects the brain from heat damage; it intensifies in dehydrated mammals, thereby saving water; it helps exercising animals delay exhaustion; it might thermally modulate alertness; it is used in diving animals to drop cerebral temperature much below its normal level, expanding diving capacity and protecting the brain from asphyxic damage. Altogether, SBC integrates both thermal and non-thermal regulatory functions.  相似文献

Whole-body cooling can be used in the treatment of various brain pathologies, for example, after hypoxic events. Potential complications include haemodynamic instability, coagulation disorders and infection. Selective brain cooling (SBC) would therefore appear to make good sense. In an animal model a new approach to SBC was therefore evaluated. A rat weighing 350 g was sedated with alpha-chloralose (40 mg/kg/h) and d-tubocurarine (4.05 mg/kg/h), mechanically ventilated and placed on a heating pad. A thermocouple was introduced into the somatosensory cortex to a depth of 2.5 mm. SBC was achieved using a novel approach: PTFE tubing (ID 100 microns) with an inlet and an outlet was wrapped around and glued to a piece of wood, and introduced non traumatically into the pharynx. The tubing was perfused with cold water (+4 degrees C). Under SBC the cortical temperature dropped from 38.4 degrees C to 27.7 degrees C while the core temperature remained stable. In an animal model SBC was successfully accomplished via the pharynx. Further studies should now be done to evaluate the effectiveness of this approach in larger animals with potentially different anatomical features.  相似文献

Storage behaviour of 'Core', 'Core Columbu', 'Fradis' and 'Meloni' white prunes, and a black one ('Sighera') of Sardinian germplasm were evaluated following immersion for 0 (control), 15, 30, 45 or 60 sec in water at 20, 50, 55 or 60 degrees C with or without 2% (w/v) NaHCO3 (SBC). As international varieties, fruit from one white plum ('Shiro') and one black prune ('Stanly') were subjected to the same treatments. Fruit was harvested at commercial maturity, treated and then stored for 1 month at 5 degrees C and 90% RH followed by a simulated marketing period at 20 degrees C and 80% RH for 6 days. Fruit appearance, external damage, firmness and decay percentage were monitored after storage and SMP. Treatments did not induce rind damage (browning or discoloration) to any variety. SBC at 20, 45, 50 or 55 degrees C for 15 or 30 sec was not effective in controlling decay and compared to controls no improvement was observed. Immersion for 45 or 60 sec with SBC at all temperatures improved decay control with respect to controls and best results were obtained at 50 or 55 degrees C. Immersions at 60 degrees C improved decay control, but differences were not significant compared to the control attained with solutions of SBC heated at 55 degrees C. The overall appearance of 'Core', 'Core Columbu', 'Fradis' and 'Shiro' decreased significantly after the SMP period, especially when treated at 55 or 60 degrees C for 60 sec. Fruit shrivel was the main cause of the low rating. SBC did not affect shrivel indicating that heat treatment may be the probable cause. In general, local varieties were less affected by decay than other varieties and they performed well during storage.  相似文献

Accommodating weanling horses in loose housing (sleeping hall with deep-litter bed and paddock) environments in winter at northern latitudes exposes the nonhuman animals to low ambient temperatures. We determined the heat loss of nine weanling horses in a cold environment by infrared thermography to assess their thermoregulatory capacity. This study examined the thermal and metabolic responses of six men during exercise in water at critical temperature (Tcw, 31.2 +/- 0.5 degrees C), below Tcw (BTcw, 28.8 +/- 0.6 degrees C), at thermoneutrality (Ttn, 34 degrees C), and above Ttn (ATtn, 36 degrees C). At each water temperature (Tw) male volunteers wearing only swimming trunks completed four 1-h experiments while immersed up to the neck. During one experiment, subjects remained at rest (R), and the other three performed leg exercise (LE) at three different intensities (LE-1, 2 MET; LE-2, 3 MET; LE-3, 4 MET). In water warmer than Tcw, there was no difference in metabolic rate (M) during R. The M for each work load was independent of Tw. Esophageal temperature (Tes) remained unchanged during R in water of ATtn (36 degrees C). However, Tes significantly (P less than 0.05) declined over 1 h during R at Ttn (delta Tes = -0.39 degrees C), Tcw (delta Tes = -0.54 degrees C), and BTcw (delta Tes = -0.61 degrees C). All levels of underwater exercise elevated Tes and M compared with R at all Tw. In water colder than Tcw, the ratio of heat loss from limbs compared with the trunk became greater as LE intensity increased, indicating a preferential increase in heat loss from the limbs in cool water. Tissue insulation (Itissue) was lower during LE than at R and was inversely proportional to the increase in LE intensity. The rate of sensible heat loss from a Clun Forest ewe was studied at several fleece depths in a temperature-controlled chamber. A simple resistance analogue was used to describe the heat flow from different body regions. Heat loss from the trunk depends largely on the mean fleece depth l. The fleece resistance was about 1.5 s cm-1 per centimetre depth. Heat transfer through the fleece was accounted for by molecular conduction, thermal radiation and free convection. The fleece conductivity -kb attributed to free convection depends on the mean temperature difference (-Tst---Tct) across the fleece according to the relation -kb = 8.0 (-Tst---Tct)0.53. Estimates of the sensible heat flux from the trunk at environmental temperatures, Ta, between 0 and 30 degrees C range from about 8 W (l = 7.0 cm, Ta = 30 degrees C) to about 160 W (l = 0.1 cm, Ta = 0 degrees C). In contrast, the sensible heat loss from the legs depends mainly on the local tissue resistance. For environmental temperatures between 0 and 30 degrees C, the calculated tissue resistance for this region of the body varied from about 8 to 1 s cm-1. The corresponding heat loss from the legs was between 10 and 20 W, compared with between 3 and 7 W from the head. The fastest heat loss from the legs occurred at an environmental temperature of about 12 degrees C. Although the proportion of the heat loss from the extremities depends on environmental temperature, the total heat loss (sensible or latent) was closely related to the mean skin temperature of the trunk.  相似文献

The response of tumours to hyperthermia was tested by giving graded heat treatments and assessing local control at 90 days. Mice were divided into three groups which were pre-treated for 3 days in ambient temperatures of 4, 21 or 35 degrees C. This enabled the mean tumour resting temperature to be varied by up to 11 degrees C, before subsequent heat treatment. For the heat treatments, the tumours were clamped in order to eliminate blood flow, resulting in uniform temperature distributions and hence more uniform thermal sensitivity. TCD50 values were used to construct Arrhenius plots. For all three pre-treatment temperatures, these plots demonstrated a factor of 1.6 increase in heating time per degree Celsius reduction in heating temperature. However, tumours kept in a 4 degrees C environment before treatment were more thermally sensitive than those kept in 21 degrees C conditions, while those in a 35 degrees C environment were more resistant. Pretreatment at 4 degrees C was equivalent to an increase of either 0.5 degree C in heating temperature or 28 per cent in heating time, compared with pre-treatment at 21 degrees C. Pre-treatment at 35 degrees C was equivalent to a reduction of either 0.6 degree C in heating temperature or 25 per cent in heating time. These data indicate that the pre-treatment tumour temperature is an important parameter, but the effect of heat treatment is more closely related to absolute heating temperature rather than to the increase in temperature above the normal resting level.  相似文献

Whole body hypothermia can be used to treat the injured brain (e.g. after hypoxic events). Side effects include hemodynamic instability, coagulopathy and infection. Because of these side effects it appears reasonable to cool the brain selectively (selective brain cooling, SBC) without changing the core temperature. A new animal model was used to demonstrate SBC from the pharynx and to examine effects of SBC on the duration of pharmacologically induced seizure activity. Sprague-Dawley rats (n=18, 12 successful experiments) were sedated and mechanically ventilated. Invasive blood pressure monitoring was instituted and blood gases were drawn to evaluate the arterial blood gas status. Electrical brain activity was recorded using a microneedle in the extracellular compartment of the rat brain cortex. Cooled water was circulated through a small tubing into and out of the pharynx of the animals. The cortical as well as the rectal temperature were recorded. After the injection of a single dose of bicuculline (1 mg/kg i.v.) per animal the duration of the induced seizure activity was measured and compared with the temperature prior to the induction of seizure activity. The cortical blood flow (CBF) was detected using intra tissue Doppler signals in the rat cortex in the same location as the EP-study. The influence of a brain temperature reduction between 36.5 degrees to 31.5 degrees C on the seizure duration was examined. There was a positive correlation between the seizure duration and the cortical temperature (r=0.64). Also the CBF was increased during seizure activity (p=0.02) and the increase correlated weakly with cortical temperature (r=0.18). The core temperature remained in the normothermic range (36.9+/-0.7 degrees C) Conclusion: The duration of induced seizures correlates with local brain temperature. In the future further studies should examine the efficiency of induced (selective) brain cooling to treat prolonged seizure activity.  相似文献

The onset and intensity of shivering of various muscles during cold air exposure are quantified and related to increases in metabolic rate and convective heat loss. Thirteen male subjects resting in a supine position and wearing only shorts were exposed to 10 degrees C air (42% relative humidity and less than 0.4 m/s airflow) for 2 h. Measurements included surface electromyogram recordings at six muscle sites representing the trunk and limb regions of one side of the body, temperatures and heat fluxes at the same contralateral sites, and metabolic rate. The subjects were grouped according to lean (LEAN, n = 6) and average body fat (NORM, n = 7) content. While the rectal temperatures fluctuated slightly but not significantly during exposure, the skin temperature decreased greatly, more at the limb sites than at the trunk sites. Muscles of the trunk region began to shiver sooner and at a higher intensity than those of the limbs. The intensity of shivering and its increase over time of exposure were consistent with the increase in the convective heat transfer coefficient calculated from skin temperatures and heat fluxes. Both the onset of shivering and the magnitude of the increase in metabolic rate due to shivering were higher for the LEAN group than for the NORM group. A regression analysis indicates that, for a given decrease in mean skin temperature, the increase in metabolic rate due to shivering is attenuated by the square root of percent body fat. Thus the LEAN group shivered at higher intensity, resulting in higher increases in metabolic heat production and convective heat loss during cold air exposure than did the NORM group.  相似文献

A solar box cooker (SBC) was constructed with a cooking area deep enough to hold several 3.7-liter jugs of water, and this was used to investigate the potential of using solar energy to pasteurize naturally contaminated water. When river water was heated either in the SBC or on a hot plate, coliform bacteria were inactivated at temperatures of 60 degrees C or greater. Heating water in an SBC to at least 65 degrees C ensures that the water will be above the milk pasteurization temperature of 62.8 degrees C for at least an hour, which appears sufficient to pasteurize contaminated water. On clear or partly cloudy days, with the SBC facing magnetic south in Sacramento, bottom water temperatures of at least 65 degrees C could be obtained in 11.1 liters of water during the 6 weeks on either side of the summer solstice, in 7.4 liters of water from mid-March through mid-September, and in 3.7 liters of water an additional 2 to 3 weeks at the beginning and end of the solar season. Periodic repositioning of the SBC towards the sun, adjusting the back reflective lid, and preheating water in a simple reflective device increased final water temperatures. Simultaneous cooking and heating water to pasteurizing temperatures was possible. Additional uses of the SBC to pasteurize soil and to decontaminate hospital materials before disposal in remote areas are suggested.  相似文献

The interpeak latencies (IPLs) of the acoustically evoked brain stem potentials depend on brain stem temperature. This was used to see whether face fanning during hyperthermia lowers brain stem temperature. In 15 subjects, three thermally stable conditions were maintained by a water bath. In each condition the IPLs were determined in 10 separate trials. In condition A esophageal temperature (Tes) was 36.9 +/- 0.3 degrees C and increased to 38.6 +/- 0.2 degrees C in condition B. In conditions A and B the head was enclosed in a ventilated hood (air temperature 38 degrees C, relative humidity 100%) to suppress any direct heat loss from the head. From conditions A to B the IPL at peaks I-V decreased by 0.146 ms/degrees C change in Tes, reflecting a change in brain stem temperature. In condition C the hood was removed and the face was fanned by a cold air-stream (8-15 degrees C, 4-10 m/s) to maximize direct heat loss from the head. Skin temperature at the sweating forehead decreased from 38 to 23 degrees C, whereas Tes in condition C was maintained at the same level as in condition B (38.5 +/- 0.2 degrees C). The IPL at peaks I-V showed no difference between conditions B and C. It is concluded that face fanning in hyperthermic subjects does not dissociate brain stem temperature from Tes.  相似文献

Evaporative and convective heat loss from head skin and expired air were measured in four male subjects at rest and during incremental exercise at 5, 15, and 25 degrees C ambient temperature (Ta) to verify whether the head can function as a heat sink for selective brain cooling. The heat losses were measured with an open-circuit method. At rest the heat loss from head skin and expired air decreased with increasing Ta from 69 +/- 5 and 37 +/- 18 (SE) W (5 degrees C) to 44 +/- 25 and 26 +/- 7 W (25 degrees C). At a work load of 150 W the heat loss tended to increase with increasing Ta: 119 +/- 21 (head skin) and 82 +/- 5 W (respiratory tract) at 5 degrees C Ta to 132 +/- 27 and 103 +/- 12 W at 25 degrees C Ta. Heat loss was always higher from the head surface than from the respiratory tract. The heat losses, separately and together (total), were highly correlated to the increasing esophageal temperature at 15 and 25 degrees C Ta. At 5 degrees C Ta on correlation occurred. The results showed that the heat loss from the head was larger than the heat brought to the brain by the arterial blood during hyperthermia, estimated to be 45 W per 1 degree C increase above normal temperature, plus the heat produced by the brain, estimated to be up to 20 W. By cooling the hypothalamus during hyperthermia, selective brain cooling reduces the drive on evaporative heat loss effectors, in so doing saving body water. To investigate whether selective brain cooling was increased in dehydrated sheep, we measured brain and carotid arterial blood temperatures at 5-min intervals in nine female Dorper sheep (41 +/- 3 kg, means +/- SD). The animals, housed in a climatic chamber at 23 degrees C, were exposed for nine days to a cyclic protocol with daytime heat (40 degrees C for 6 h). Drinking water was removed on the 3rd day and returned 5 days later. After 4 days of water deprivation, sheep had lost 16 +/- 4% of body mass, and plasma osmolality had increased from 290 +/- 8 to 323 +/- 9 mmol/kg (P < 0.0001). Although carotid blood temperature increased during heat exposure to similar levels during euhydration and dehydration, selective brain cooling was significantly greater in dehydration (0.38 +/- 0.18 degrees C) than in euhydration (-0.05 +/- 0.14 degrees C, P = 0.0008). The threshold temperature for selective brain cooling was not significantly different during euhydration (39.27 degrees C) and dehydration (39.14 degrees C, P = 0.62). However, the mean slope of lines of regression of brain temperature on carotid blood temperature above the threshold was significantly lower in dehydrated animals (0.40 +/- 0.31) than in euhydrated animals (0.87 +/- 0.11, P = 0.003). Return of drinking water at 39 degrees C led to rapid cessation of selective brain cooling, and brain temperature exceeded carotid blood temperature throughout heat exposure on the following day. We conclude that for any given carotid blood temperature, dehydrated sheep exposed to heat exhibit selective brain cooling up to threefold greater than that when euhydrated.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of water temperature on the human body during low-intensity prolonged swimming. Six male college swimmers participated in this study. The experiments consisted of breast stroke swimming for 120 minutes in 23 degrees C, 28 degrees C and 33 degrees C water at a constant speed of 0.4 m.sec-1 in a swimming flume. The same subjects walked on a treadmill at a rate of approximately 50% of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) at the same relative intensity as the three swimming trials. Rectal temperature (Tre) in 33 degrees C water was unchanged during swimming for 120 minutes. Tre during treadmill walking increased significantly compared to the three different swimming trials. Tre, mean skin temperature (Tsk) and mean body temperature (Tb) in 23 degrees C and 28 degrees C water decreased significantly more than in both the 33 degrees C water and walking on land. VO2 during swimming in 23 degrees C water increased more than during swimming in the 28 degrees C and 33 degrees C trials; however, there were no significant differences in VO2 between the 23 degrees C swimming trial and treadmill walking. Heart rate (HR) during treadmill walking on land increased significantly compared with HR during the three swimming trials. Plasma adrenaline concentration at the end of the treadmill walking was higher than that at the end of each of the three swimming trials. Noradrenaline concentrations at the end of swimming in the 23 degrees C water and treadmill walking were higher than those during the other two swimming trials. Blood lactate concentration during swimming in 23 degrees C water was higher than that during the other two swimming trials and walking on land. These results suggest that the balance of heat loss and heat production is maintained in the warm water temperature. Therefore, a relatively warm water temperature may be desirable when prolonged swimming or other water exercise is performed at low intensity.  相似文献

RIF-1 tumors (100-300 mg) were exposed in vivo to heat treatment (41-48 degrees C) for 30 min and then assayed for either cell survival or tumor control. The tumors were heated either with normal perfusion or with temporary vascular occlusion (clamped for 30 min prior to and during the 30-min treatment). The physical technique of water bath heating ensured temperature uniformity in both the perfused and vascularly occluded tumors. Survival curves for tumor cells heated under both conditions had a shoulder and exponential regions. While the T0's were not statistically different in the two cases, cells from the tumors whose blood flow had been occluded showed an enhanced sensitivity to heat as evidenced by a reduction of the shoulder by 2.5 degrees C. A similar increase in sensitivity was measured with the tumor cure assay with the TCT50 decreasing from 47 degrees C for unclamped tumors to 45 degrees C for clamped tumors. The two assays are therefore in excellent agreement in assessing the effectiveness of heat treatment and the influence of vascular occlusion on the heat sensitivity of this tumor. Since the clonogenic assay was performed immediately after treatment, this agreement between assays indicates that direct cell kill by heat is the major factor in determining cure in this tumor.  相似文献

It is necessary to consider breed and cold tolerance in the housing and caring of horses. This study demonstrates differences in heat loss between horse types at low temperatures and examines rate of loss in different types during different seasons. Eighteen horses participated. Groups by type were light (L), warmblood (W), coldblood (C), and pony (P). A camera filmed thermographic images at 15 degrees C, 2 degrees C (all types), -8 degrees C (L, W, C), and -12 degrees C (P). The study calculated loss from the neck, trunk, and inner surfaces of front and hind legs. Loss was similar in all types at 15 degrees C. L, W, and C dissipated more heat at 2 degrees C than at 15 degrees C (p < .001) and from neck and trunk at -8 degrees C than at 2 degrees C (p < .05). P dissipated heat similarly at 2 degrees C and -12 degrees C. At 2 degrees C, loss was less from neck and trunk in C and P compared with L (p < .05).
