The authors conducted a gillnet survey in 2013 in Black Lake, Michigan, USA to evaluate the lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) stocking programme that began in 2001. Objectives were to (i) estimate year‐class specific abundance of juvenile lake sturgeon in Black Lake; and (ii) determine year‐class specific survival of stocked year classes and determine whether year‐class‐specific first‐year survival was related to average size at the time of stocking. Deployed were 15 and 20 cm stretch mesh gillnets at 72 randomly selected sites in Black Lake over a 3‐week survey using a Schnabel multiple‐mark, multiple‐recapture estimator to determine overall abundance of stocked fish. Ages for captured fish were determined from fin ray cross sections and the presence of coded wire tags, and apportioned the overall abundance estimate of juveniles to year class using an age‐length key. Overall survival estimates were calculated by dividing the year‐class specific abundance estimates by the number of fish stocked that year. Also evaluated was the relationship between first‐year survival and average total length (TL) at time of stocking using logistic regression. Overall survival from stocking to 2013 ranged from 0.03 to 0.53. First‐year survival was positively associated with average TL at stocking, and ranged from 0.05 for fish stocked at 9 cm TL to 0.84 for fish stocked at 22 cm TL. Estimation of future cohort‐specific abundance based on size‐based expected survival allows managers to establish annual stocking targets that should lead to the achievement of long‐term population goals for adult abundance.  相似文献

Localized catastrophic events can dramatically affect fish populations. Management interventions, such as stocking, are often undertaken to re‐establish populations that have experienced such events. Evaluations of the effectiveness of these interventions are required to inform future management actions. Multiple hypoxic blackwater events in 2010–2011 substantially reduced fish communities in the Edward‐Wakool river system in the southern Murray‐Darling Basin, New South Wales, Australia. These events led to extensive fish kills across large sections of the entire system following a period of prolonged drought. To expedite recovery efforts, 119 661 golden perch Macquaria ambigua and 59 088 Murray cod Maccullochella peelii fingerlings were stocked at five locations over 3 years. All fish stocked were chemically marked with calcein to enable retrospective evaluation of wild or hatchery origin. Targeted collections were undertaken 3 years post‐stocking to investigate the relative contribution of stocking efforts and recovery via natural recruitment in the system. Of the golden perch retained for annual ageing (n = 93) only nine were of an age that could have coincided with stocking activities. Of those, six were stocked. The dominant year‐class of golden perch were spawned in 2009; before the stocking programme began and prior to blackwater events. All Murray cod retained (n = 136) were of an age that coincided with stocking activities, although only eight were stocked. Among the Murray cod captured, the dominant year‐class was spawned in 2011, after the blackwater events occurred. The results from this study provide first evidence that natural spawning and recruitment, and possibly immigration, were the main drivers of golden perch and Murray cod recovery following catastrophic fish kills. Interpreted in the context of other recent examples, the collective results indicate limited benefit of stocking to existing connected populations already naturally recruiting in riverine systems.  相似文献

Through combined effects of over-exploitation and predation by invasive non-native sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus (Linneaus 1958), the lake trout Salvelinus namaycush (Walbaum 1972) population in Lake Erie collapsed and was considered extirpated by 1950; annual stocking occurred in 1969 to bolster and maintain this population as natural recruitment ceased. While various hatchery strains of lean ecotype lake trout remain the focus of Lake Erie’s stocking, between 2004 and 2011 a humper-like ecotype was stocked to aid re-establishment efforts. We assessed ecotype performance via adult fish collected during the summer-stratified period (2004–2017) and evaluated if life history and ecological characteristics varied between stocked ecotypes. Ecotype-specific differences in survival, length-at-age, accumulation of weight with length, and diet were observed. Lean lake trout grew faster (length-at-age) and matured at larger sizes than the humper ecotype. Humper lake trout exhibited higher sea lamprey wounding and lower survival rates than lean lake trout. Humpers also consumed more benthic prey fish than lean lake trout, suggesting this ecotype may exhibit a more benthic orientation than leans. Our study represents the first evaluation of how a non-lean ecotype lake trout performs outside their native ecosystem and provides fishery managers with valuable information relevant to re-establishing lake trout populations in the Great Lakes.

Hatchery augmentation has been used to mitigate declines in fish populations worldwide, especially for sturgeon species. Information regarding stocking success including survival, dispersal, and growth of sturgeon post‐stocking may refine sturgeon augmentation programs and facilitate recovery. Pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus populations have been supplemented by hatchery‐reared stocks for 25 years in the Missouri River, USA. We assessed survival, dispersal patterns, and growth characteristics of post‐stocked pallid sturgeon in the lower Missouri River. Hatchery‐reared pallid sturgeon stocked at age‐1 (4.1%) and > age‐1 (2.9%) were recaptured at a higher frequency than fish stocked at age‐0 (0.3%). Post‐stocking dispersal patterns suggested dispersal range increase as age increased, but individuals tended to remain in the same river segment as their stocking location. Growth rates varied by year class with younger year classes having truncated growth trajectories compared to older year classes. Post‐stock survival of pallid sturgeon varied by age‐at‐stocking and suggest age‐1 survival has declined through time. Augmentation of pallid sturgeon may benefit from considering dispersal from stocking location and by stocking older individuals which appear to have increased survival post‐stocking. A better understanding regarding environmental drivers of growth and specific habitat features used is needed to better predict optimal timing and location of future stockings.  相似文献

  1. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts are often stocked into rivers to supplement natural reproduction, yet hatchery-reared fish have lower survival compared to wild conspecifics. However, few studies have assessed riverine migratory performance and survival differences in hatchery and wild smolts, or more specifically naturally reared smolts (hatchery fish released earlier as parr), particularly in rivers with weirs which may further reduce survival.
  2. Using acoustic telemetry, including a subset of fish with novel transmitters that identify predation events, we assessed survival and migration patterns of hatchery- (2017: n = 32; 2018: n = 30) and naturally reared Atlantic salmon smolts (2017: n = 8; 2018: n = 30) in a Lake Ontario tributary with two weirs to better understand their ecology and assess the influence of environmental parameters on migration.
  3. Naturally reared smolts were 13.9 times more likely to survive than hatchery-reared smolts and mark–recapture models indicated that weirs did not reduce survival for either group. Survival per km was lowest at the release site, indicating pre-migration mortality, and specifically high stocking-related mortality of hatchery-reared smolts. Speed and times of day fish migrated (i.e. migratory performance) did not vary by rearing group, suggesting that the high mortality of hatchery-reared smolts may be due to other factors related to hatchery and stocking operations. Overall mean (± SD) migration speed for smolts was 0.70 ± 0.39 km/hr and movements occurred significantly more frequently at night (18:00–06:00).
  4. Smolts were detected in Lake Ontario after they left the river; however, the array in Lake Ontario was not conducive to providing much detail regarding movement patterns. There was no predation of the two predation tags detected in Lake Ontario, indicating that movements were made by smolts and not predators.
  5. With ongoing restoration efforts of Atlantic salmon in Lake Ontario, it was important to understand the smolt migration patterns and success of the stocked fish. Our findings of similar migratory performance yet different relative survival of hatchery- and naturally reared smolts help inform management with regards to stocking strategies that could improve Atlantic salmon reintroduction success.

It is hypothesized that the stocking procedure influences survival, growth and distribution of introduced fishes; however, there is still limited information on the effect of various stocking strategies on recaptures in natural freshwaters. The present study aim was to investigate how the rate and distribution of anglers' catches of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) vary with the stocking season (spring, summer and autumn), lake area, method (shore and offshore releases), and fish size (≤500 and >500 g) in the large and shallow Lake Balaton, Hungary. In 2010, 4500 two‐summer‐old individually‐tagged common carp were stocked to test 36 release set‐ups (three seasons × three lake areas × two methods × two size groups). Anglers reported the date, location and fish size (standard length and weight) on 787 recaptures within 2 years after the release. Recapture rate was highest in summer and lowest in autumn stockings, but was not affected by the stocking area, method or fish size. Regarding space, the widest dispersals were in recaptures in autumn and in the centre of the lake, but fish movement was not influenced by the stocking method or fish size. In conclusion, in summer the stocking quotas should be evenly distributed along the entire shoreline; early spring stockings may be optimized for transport costs and concentrated by each lake basin. Late autumn stockings should be avoided, and the capacity of effective wintering ponds should be developed. This study also provides a good framework for testing fisheries management alternatives in other intensively fished habitats.  相似文献

Hatchery‐reared fish are commonly stocked into freshwaters to enhance recreational angling. As these fishes are often of high trophic position and attain relatively large sizes, they potentially interact with functionally similar resident fishes and modify food‐web structure. Hatchery‐reared barbel Barbus barbus are frequently stocked to enhance riverine cyprinid fish communities in Europe; these fish can survive for over 20 years and exceed 8 kg. Here, their trophic consequences for resident fish communities were tested using cohabitation studies, mainly involving chub Squalius cephalus, a similarly large‐bodied, omnivorous and long‐lived species. These studies were completed over three spatial scales: pond mesocosms, two streams and three lowland rivers, and used stable isotope analysis. Experiments in mesocosms over 100 days revealed rapid formation of dietary specializations and discrete trophic niches in juvenile B. barbus and S. cephalus. This niche partitioning between the species was also apparent in the streams over 2 years. In the lowland rivers, where fish were mature individuals within established populations, this pattern was also generally apparent in fishes of much larger body sizes. Thus, the stocking of these hatchery‐reared fish only incurred minor consequences for the trophic ecology of resident fish, with strong patterns of trophic niche partitioning and diet specialization. Application of these results to decision‐making frameworks should enable managers to make objective decisions on whether cyprinid fish should be stocked into lowland rivers according to ecological risk.  相似文献

The length–weight relationships for 10 freshwater fish species from an intermittent river basin in a semi‐arid region of Brazil were analyzed. Specimens were caught using a dragnet (3.5 × 2.5; stretched mesh size 5 mm) during running and pool phases from January to November 2015. The specimens were measured for total length and weight. Previously unavailable in FishBase, the detailed length–weight relationships of Compsura heterura, Phenacogaster calverti, and Serrapinnus piaba are reported for the first time. All fish collected presented total lengths (TL) lower than the maximum reported in FishBase.  相似文献

This study reports the length–weight relationship (LWR) and length‐length relationship (LLR) estimated for four fish species inhabiting in Chilika Lake, India. Total 504 specimens were sampled from mono‐filament gill nets (mesh size 12 mm, 22–24 mm, 34–38 mm, 42 mm) during January 2015 to December 2015. The estimated b values from LWR ranged between 2.79 (T. biaculeatus) to 3.29 (C. praeustus). In all species, the relationships between length‐weight and length‐length were highly correlated (p < .05). The study provides first world reports on LWRs and LLRs for all the 4 studied species.  相似文献

Population characteristics of pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus in the lower Missouri River are relatively unknown. Therefore, data collected from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Pallid Sturgeon Population Assessment Program was synthesized to (i) document the population structure of pallid sturgeon by origin (hatchery‐reared or wild), gender, and reproductive readiness, (ii) document the minimum size and age‐at‐maturity by gender, and (iii) document the fecundity rates of the fish that were successfully spawned in the hatchery. During this 4‐year study (2008–2011), relative abundance for wild and hatchery‐reared pallid sturgeon collected with gill nets did not significantly change whereas relative abundance for wild fish using trot lines declined significantly. The proportion of hatchery‐reared pallid sturgeon increased annually, with the population being composed primarily of hatchery‐reared fish. The proportion of reproductively ready females to non‐reproductively ready females was 1 : 2.0, compared to male ratios at 1 : 0.9. Minimum fork length‐at‐maturity was estimated for females at 788 mm and for males at 798 mm. Minimum age‐at‐maturity for hatchery‐reared released fish was age‐9 for females and age‐7 for males. Highest relative fecundity, based on the ovosomatic index, was 10% with an overall mean of 7%. The number of eggs per ml (egg size) was not correlated with fork length (P = 0.0615) or weight (P = 0.0957). Relative condition factor (Kn) for females was significantly different by reproductive condition (P = 0.0014) and Kn for males did not differ between reproductive conditions (P = 0.2634). Detecting shifts in population characteristics are essential not only to understand population dynamics since hatchery inputs and natural perturbations continue to change the population structure but also to assess species recovery efforts to ensure long‐term species sustainability.  相似文献

Steelhead, Oncorhynchus mykiss, were first introduced into the Great Lakes in the late 1800s. Subsequently, natural recruitment across the Lake Michigan basin has been regularly supplemented by primarily one hatchery strain. Recently, multiple strains derived from locations across the species native range along the west coast of the United States have also been stocked by different management agencies. Prior to 1983, hatchery supplementation of Lake Michigan steelhead populations in Michigan was largely unsuccessful due to low smolting rates of small (<120 mm) hatchery yearlings (estimated survival 0.01%). Accordingly, contributions of hatchery fish to historical adult spawning runs in Michigan tributaries were low (0–30%) across six major drainages. Large yearlings of different hatchery strains (>150 mm) have been stocked exclusively since 1983, increasing estimates of survival to smolting (90%). Consequently, the proportion of hatchery adults in spawning runs increased to 13–79%. We examined the effects of changes in stocking practices on straying rates of hatchery steelhead and to temporal changes in levels of genetic diversity and relationships among populations. We used microsatellite loci to estimate allele frequencies for six populations sampled for two time periods (1983–1984 and 1998–1999). Measures of inter-population divergence (mean FST) were not significant for either time period. However, spatial genetic relationships among historical and contemporary populations were significantly correlated with geographic distance; a result not expected if gene flow (natural straying) among populations was mediated solely by hatchery supplementation. Increased numbers of alleles in spawning adults from populations can be attributed to alleles specific to recently introduced hatchery strains.  相似文献

Declines in the number of anadromous brown trout in the Karup River in Denmark, due to environmental degradation, led to the stocking of large numbers of hatchery trout during the 1980s. This practice was gradually replaced by stocking with the offspring of electrofished local trout The genetic contribution of the hatchery fish to the current population of anadromous trout in the river was estimated by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of mitochondrial DNA, using seven restriction endonucleases. Fish from the hatchery strain as well as from five locations in the river system, and from a further unstocked river were screened. Eight haplotypes were observed. The distribution and frequencies of the observed haplotypes revealed little genetic differentiation among stocked populations. The hatchery strain differed significantly from the stocked populations. One haplotype which was found at a high frequency in the hatchery strain was almost absent from the stocked populations. This suggests that the genetic contribution of the hatchery trout to the current population is much less than would be expected from the number of stocked fish. The possible reasons for the failure of the hatchery trout to contribute to the gene pool, and also the implications for conservation biology, are discussed.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine optimum stocking density for Clarias batrachus larvae and fry during hatchery rearing. The increase in stocking density decreased the total weight, specific growth rate (SGR) and percent weight gain of Clarias larvae during a 13‐day experiment. Survival rate was highest at a stocking density of 1000 m?2 and lowest at 5000 m?2. Stocking density did not influence the total biomass production of larvae. Clarias batrachus fry performance was studied during a 28‐day hatchery rearing experiment whereby fry stocked at a density of 100 m?2 attained the highest total body weight (P < 0.05). The survival rate greatly declined to 59–61% by a density increase to 300 m?2 and above. Stocking density influenced growth and survival of C. batrachus larvae and fry during hatchery rearing. The best performance was obtained when larvae were stocked at 2000 m?2; survival was highest with C. batrachus fry stocked at 200 m?2.  相似文献

This study provides the first biological information on a small freshwater benthic fish species Odontobutis sinensis (Wu, Chen & Chong, 2002) from Liangzi Lake, China. The length‐weight relationship was BW = 0.0080TL3.23. The male : female sex ratio was 1.56 : 1. Based on the gonadosomatic index (GSI), the spawning season is from April to June. Females first matured at 7.90 cm total length (TL). Absolute fecundity varied from 346 to 2588 eggs. Main food items consisted of crustaceans and smaller fishes.  相似文献

Hatchery‐reared adult brown trout, Salmo trutta v. fario L., [215–335 mm standard length (LS), n = 82] were individually tagged and released into three sections of the Blanice River in May 2007. Wild populations of brown trout and grayling, Thymallus thymallus, L., in these sections and three non‐stocked control sections were also tagged. The recapture rate of hatchery‐reared adult brown trout after 6 months (18%, n = 15) was comparable to that of wild adult brown trout in stocked (15%, n = 14) and control (14%, n = 11) sections. The recapture rates of wild brown trout and grayling after 6 months were higher in control sections than in stocked sections, but the differences were not significant. The movement of recaptured large juvenile wild brown trout from stocked sections was significantly higher (36%) than from control sections (9%). Wild brown trout growth and grayling growth were unaffected by stocking with adult hatchery‐reared brown trout.  相似文献

As pallid sturgeon, Scaphirhynchus albus (Forbes & Richardson, 1905), natural reproduction and recruitment remains very minimal in the lower Missouri River from Gavins Point Dam (river kilometer [rkm] 1305.2) to the confluence with the Mississippi River (rkm 0.0), hatchery supplementation and river‐wide monitoring efforts have continued. Annual survival estimates of hatchery‐reared pallid sturgeon stocked in the lower Missouri River were previously estimated during 1994–2008. Low recapture rates prior to 2006 limited the data available to estimate survival, which resulted in considerable uncertainty for the estimate of annual survival of age‐1 fish. Therefore, the objective was to provide more precise estimates of annual survival of pallid sturgeon using five additional years of stocking and sampling. The Cormack‐Jolly‐Seber model structure provided in program MARK was used to estimate the age‐specific survival estimates. Over 135 000 hatchery‐reared pallid sturgeon were released during 1994–2011 and recaptured at a rate of 1.9%, whereby estimates for the annual survival of age‐0 (Ø = 0.048) and >age‐1 (Ø = 0.931) were similar to those previously reported, but the age‐1 (Ø = 0.403) survival estimate was 52% lower. Post hoc analysis using time‐specific survival estimates indicated lower survival for age‐1 fish post‐2003 year classes, relative to the pre‐2002 year classes. An analysis confirms that hatchery‐reared pallid sturgeon continue to survive in the wild. However, low survival during the first 2 years of life is a management concern as efforts are aimed at maximizing genetic diversity and population growth. A follow‐up analysis also demonstrated the variability of capture rates and survival over time, which reinforces the need to continue to monitor and evaluate mark‐recapture data. The mark‐recapture efforts have provided demographic parameter estimates that remain a critical component for species recovery as these data are incorporated into population models.  相似文献

The amago salmon, Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae, is an endemic subspecies of O. masou in Japan. Owing to the extensive stocking of hatchery fish throughout Japan, indigenous populations of O. m. ishikawae are now on the verge of extinction. We examined the genetic effects of stocking hatchery fish on wild populations in the River Koza, Japan, using microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) markers. For mtDNA, haplotype mt1, which is common in wild populations, was present exclusively in isolated wild populations assumed to be unaffected by previous stocking, while it was never observed in hatchery fish. Genetic diversity was much higher in wild populations in the stocked area, which shared many mtDNA haplotypes with hatchery fish, than in isolated wild populations with haplotype mt1. Pairwise F ST estimates based on microsatellites showed significant differentiation among the isolated populations with many microsatellite loci monomorphic. Significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium was observed in wild populations in the area subject to stocking, where a Bayesian-based assignment test showed a high level of introgression with hatchery fish. These results suggest that wild populations with haplotype mt1, which became isolated through anthropogenic environmental change in the 1950–1960s, represent indigenous populations of O. m. ishikawae in the River Koza. They have low genetic diversity, most likely caused by genetic bottlenecks following damming and environmental deterioration, while stocking of hatchery fish over the past 30 years apparently had a large impact on the genetic structure of wild populations in the main channel of the River Koza.  相似文献

Reproductive traits of Oxyurichthys tentacularis, a most demanded fish in Ashtamudi Lake, S. India were studied from samples collected using gill net, cast net and dip net during 2013–2015. Sexes were separated by observing the urogenital papilla in males and the gonads. Five maturity stages were identified by examining the gonads. Though advanced maturity stages were encountered throughout the year, higher preponderance of ripe gonads was discernible during August to November and February to April. Gonadosomatic indices indicated same trend in both sexes. The length at first maturity was 86.67 mm in males and 80.17 mm in females. The absolute fecundity ranged from 5,112 (102 mm TL) to 52,431(175 mm TL). Fecundity established linear relationships with total length, body weight and ovary weight. Ova diameter studies revealed that spawning takes place in batches at regular intervals and the species is a multiple spawner. The ratio of males to females was found to be 1:0.7 (χ2 = 10.8; p < 0.05). The pooled average for the whole period showed a perceptible dominance of male population in all of the months except in January (χ= 2.3; p > 0.05) could be observed.  相似文献

The dominancy of semi‐wild and hatchery‐reared white‐spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis juveniles was evaluated using pair‐wise enclosure tests and field stocking tests. The semi‐wild S. leucomaenis originated in a hatchery, being stocked into the test stream as eyed‐eggs. In the pair‐wise enclosure test, the semi‐wild S. leucomaenis dominated the hatchery S. leucomaenis that were of a similar standard length (LS). The semi‐wild S. leucomaenis were subordinate to hatchery S. leucomaenis that were > 11% larger in LS. In the field stocking test, the abundance and growth of semi‐wild S. leucomaenis was decreased in the presence of larger hatchery S. leucomaenis (14% larger LS). Taken together, these results suggest that larger hatchery S. leucomaenis ecologically suppress the smaller semi‐wild S. leucomaenis. Salvelinus leucomaenis juveniles that are stocked with the intention of supplementing natural populations should be < 10% larger than their wild counterparts at the time of stocking to minimize their competitive advantage. The semi‐wild and hatchery S. leucomaenis used in both tests were genetically similar individuals, suggesting that the differences are due to the early rearing environment of either a natural stream or hatchery. The hatchery S. leucomaenis have lower levels of aggression as a result of selection in the hatchery rearing environment. Rearing in a natural stream from the eyed‐egg stage is likely to increase their lowered aggression.  相似文献

The study provides new information on the reproductive biology of Hypselobarbus thomassi (Day, 1874) an endemic cyprinid fish in the Western Ghats–a biodiversity hotspot of India. A total of 384 specimens (males = 244 and females = 140) were collected monthly from April 2009 to March 2011 from Kallada River of Southern part of Western Ghats, India. Monthly sex ratio indicated that males predominated in the fishery, and an overall sex ratio was significantly different from the expected value of 1:1 (male:female = 1:0.57, x2 = 28.17, p < .01). Based on the monthly analysis of gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the proportion of mature individuals, the spawning season of H. thomassi occurred between May to October with a peak in June to August. The length at first maturity (L50) recorded was 290 mm TL in males and 330 mm TL in females. The absolute fecundity ranged between 305 (234 mm TL) to 1,089 (414 mm TL) and relative fecundity oscillated between 77.3–220.69 oocytes/g of fish. The fecundity established a linear relationship with total length, body weight and ovary weight. The findings of this study would be very effective to impose sustainable conservation plan for this threatened species in Kallada River and other Western Ghats river systems.  相似文献
