The interaction of excitation and inhibition in responses due to attentional mechanisms in the visual system has been investigated. The studies reported herein use the tactile system of humans to test a specific hypothesis about the processes of attention that have never been directly addressed. Both exogenous and endogenous Inhibition of Return (IOR) reaction-time paradigms with a 100 Hz, 35 microm of peak displacement amplitude were used. In these experiments multiple Stimulus Onset Asynchronies were tested which made it difficult for subjects to learn timing patterns. We tested whether a detection time to a target which is to be attended to is a composite of at least two underlying mechanisms. These mechanisms were explored using exogenous and endogenous IOR experiments. It is hypothesized that these mechanisms work in a push-pull fashion: one deploying attention when new events occur, and the other withdrawing attention ("Disengagement") after it has been deployed. Based on the results, a new hypothesis is proposed stating that one form of attention (selective attention) competes with IOR in determining the time taken to detect a target in the tactile system.  相似文献

Abstract

Endogenous and exogenous attention in touch have typically been investigated separately. Here we use a double-cueing paradigm manipulating both types of orienting in each trial. Bilateral endogenous cues induced long-lasting facilitation of endogenous attention up to 2?s. However, the exogenous cue only elicited an effect at short intervals. Our results favour a supramodal account of attention and this study provides new insight into how endogenous and exogenous attention operates in the tactile modality.  相似文献

Previous studies investigated the effects of crossmodal spatial attention by comparing the responses to validly versus invalidly cued target stimuli. Dynamics of cortical rhythms in the time interval between cue and target might contribute to cue effects on performance. Here, we studied the influence of spatial attention on ongoing oscillatory brain activity in the interval between cue and target onset. In a first experiment, subjects underwent periods of tactile stimulation (cue) followed by visual stimulation (target) in a spatial cueing task as well as tactile stimulation as a control. In a second experiment, cue validity was modified to be 50%, 75%, or else 25%, to separate effects of exogenous shifts of attention caused by tactile stimuli from that of endogenous shifts. Tactile stimuli produced: 1) a stronger lateralization of the sensorimotor beta-rhythm rebound (15-22 Hz) after tactile stimuli serving as cues versus not serving as cues; 2) a suppression of the occipital alpha-rhythm (7-13 Hz) appearing only in the cueing task (this suppression was stronger contralateral to the endogenously attended side and was predictive of behavioral success); 3) an increase of prefrontal gamma-activity (25-35 Hz) specifically in the cueing task. We measured cue-related modulations of cortical rhythms which may accompany crossmodal spatial attention, expectation or decision, and therefore contribute to cue validity effects. The clearly lateralized alpha suppression after tactile cues in our data indicates its dependence on endogenous rather than exogenous shifts of visuo-spatial attention following a cue independent of its modality.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In the current study we compared the effects of temporal orienting of attention based on predictions carried by the intrinsic temporal structure of events (rhythm) and by instructive symbolic cues; and tested the degree of cognitive, strategic control that could be exerted over each type of temporal expectation. The experiments tested whether the distinction between exogenous and endogenous orienting made in spatial attention may extend to the temporal domain. TASK DESIGN AND MAIN RESULTS: In this task, a ball moved across the screen in discrete steps and disappeared temporarily under an occluding band. Participants were required to make a perceptual discrimination on the target upon its reappearance. The regularity of the speed (rhythmic cue) or colour (symbolic cue) of the moving stimulus could predict the exact time at which a target would reappear after a brief occlusion (valid trials) or provide no temporal information (neutral trials). The predictive nature of rhythmic and symbolic cues was manipulated factorially in a symmetrical and orthogonal fashion. To test for the effects of strategic control over temporal orienting based on rhythmic or symbolic cues, participants were instructed either to "attend-to-speed" (rhythm) or "attend-to-colour". Our results indicated that both rhythmic and symbolic (colour) cues speeded reaction times in an independent fashion. However, whilst the rhythmic cueing effects were impervious to instruction, the effects of symbolic cues were contingent on the instruction to attend to colour. FINAL CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, our results provide evidence for the existence of qualitatively separable types of temporal orienting of attention, akin to exogenous and endogenous mechanisms.  相似文献

Based on the data obtained in a series of experiments with laboratory animals, conclusions about changes in the activity of calcium-dependent proteases in the brains of rats with induced neurodegeneration have been drawn. The properties of the proteolytic and regulatory components of the calpain system under the action of neurotoxic agents: amyloid β-peptide and glutamate have been characterized, and the main endogenous regulatory mechanisms of changes in the intensity of calcium-dependent proteolysis have been established. The neuroprotective properties of exogenous calpain regulators acting by different mechanisms: sex steroids and calcium channel regulators have been tested on degeneration models examined.  相似文献

Parasympathetic heart rate regulation was studied in full-term (FT) and very preterm (VPT) infants at the corrected age of 5 months during endogenous and exogenous sustained attention. Cardiac interval duration and the respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) were used as indices of parasympathetic regulation of heart activity during infants’ sustained attention to a new visual stimulus (exogenous attention) and anticipatory attention to repeatedly appearing and disappearing stimuli in the visual expectation paradigm (endogenous attention). The psychomotor development and behavior regulation were assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, and the clinical risk was scored on the Ballard scale. A shift of attention state affected the RSA only in the FT infants. The endogenous attention was associated with a relatively high RSA level, with the higher RSA levels being significantly correlated with the Bayley Behavior Rating Scale scores. At the age of 5 months, the degree of clinical risk in the VPT infants was not correlated with specific features of parasympathetic regulation. The results are discussed in terms of the concepts of physiological mechanisms of exogenous and endogenous attention in infants. The central regulation of the autonomic functions during a shift of attention state is less efficient in healthy VPT infants as compared to their FT peers. The RSA reactivity can be a more sensitive indicator of CNS regulatory disorders than the standard indices of clinical risk.  相似文献

CRISPR/Cas9-Mediated Genome Editing in Soybean Hairy Roots   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
As a new technology for gene editing, the CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat)/Cas (CRISPR-associated) system has been rapidly and widely used for genome engineering in various organisms. In the present study, we successfully applied type II CRISPR/Cas9 system to generate and estimate genome editing in the desired target genes in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill.). The single-guide RNA (sgRNA) and Cas9 cassettes were assembled on one vector to improve transformation efficiency, and we designed a sgRNA that targeted a transgene (bar) and six sgRNAs that targeted different sites of two endogenous soybean genes (GmFEI2 and GmSHR). The targeted DNA mutations were detected in soybean hairy roots. The results demonstrated that this customized CRISPR/Cas9 system shared the same efficiency for both endogenous and exogenous genes in soybean hairy roots. We also performed experiments to detect the potential of CRISPR/Cas9 system to simultaneously edit two endogenous soybean genes using only one customized sgRNA. Overall, generating and detecting the CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome modifications in target genes of soybean hairy roots could rapidly assess the efficiency of each target loci. The target sites with higher efficiencies can be used for regular soybean transformation. Furthermore, this method provides a powerful tool for root-specific functional genomics studies in soybean.  相似文献

Visual orienting of attention and gaze are widely considered to be mediated by shared neural pathways, with automatic phenomena such as inhibition of return (IOR)--the bias against returning to recently visited locations--being generated via the direct pathway from retina to superior colliculus (SC). Here, we show that IOR occurs without direct access to the SC, by using a technique that employs stimuli visible only to short-wave-sensitive (S) cones. We found that these stimuli, to which the SC is blind , were quite capable of eliciting IOR, measured by traditional manual responses. Critically, however, we found that S cone stimuli did not cause IOR when saccadic eye movement responses were required. This demonstrates that saccadic IOR is not the same as traditional IOR, providing support for two separate cortical and collicular mechanisms of IOR. These findings represent a clear dissociation between visual orienting of attention and gaze.  相似文献

Recent functional neuroimaging evidence suggests a bottleneck between learning new information and remembering old information. In two behavioral experiments and one functional MRI (fMRI) experiment, we tested the hypothesis that learning and remembering compete when both processes happen within a brief period of time. In the first behavioral experiment, participants intentionally remembered old words displayed in the foreground, while incidentally learning new scenes displayed in the background. In line with a memory competition, we found that remembering old information was associated with impaired learning of new information. We replicated this finding in a subsequent fMRI experiment, which showed that this behavioral effect was coupled with a suppression of learning-related activity in visual and medial temporal areas. Moreover, the fMRI experiment provided evidence that left mid-ventrolateral prefrontal cortex is involved in resolving the memory competition, possibly by facilitating rapid switching between learning and remembering. Critically, a follow-up behavioral experiment in which the background scenes were replaced with a visual target detection task provided indications that the competition between learning and remembering was not merely due to attention. This study not only provides novel insight into our capacity to learn and remember, but also clarifies the neural mechanisms underlying flexible behavior.  相似文献

Inhibition of Return (IOR) is one of the most consistent and widely studied effects in experimental psychology. The effect refers to a delayed response to visual stimuli in a cued location after initial priming at that location. This article presents a dynamic field model for IOR. The model describes the evolution of three coupled activation fields. The decision field, inspired by the intermediate layer of the superior colliculus, receives endogenous input and input from a sensory field. The sensory field, inspired by earlier sensory processing, receives exogenous input. Habituation of the sensory field is implemented by a reciprocal coupling with a third field, the habituation field. The model generates IOR because, due to the habituation of the sensory field, the decision field receives a reduced target-induced input in cue-target-compatible situations. The model is consistent with single-unit recordings of neurons of monkeys that perform IOR tasks. Such recordings have revealed that IOR phenomena parallel the activity of neurons in the intermediate layer of the superior colliculus and that neurons in this layer receive reduced input in cue-target-compatible situations. The model is also consistent with behavioral data concerning temporal expectancy effects. In a discussion, the multi-layer dynamic field account of IOR is used to illustrate the broader view that behavior consists of a tuning of the organism to the environment that continuously and concurrently takes place at different spatiotemporal scales.  相似文献

How are local motion signals integrated to form a global motion percept? We investigate the neural mechanisms of tactile motion integration by presenting tactile gratings and plaids to the fingertips of monkeys, using the tactile analogue of a visual monitor and recording the responses evoked in somatosensory cortical neurons. The perceived directions of the gratings and plaids are measured in parallel psychophysical experiments. We identify a population of somatosensory neurons that exhibit integration properties comparable to those induced by analogous visual stimuli in area MT and find that these neural responses account for the perceived direction of the stimuli across all stimulus conditions tested. The preferred direction of the neurons and the perceived direction of the stimuli can be predicted from the weighted average of the directions of the individual stimulus features, highlighting that the somatosensory system implements a vector average mechanism to compute tactile motion direction that bears striking similarities to its visual counterpart.  相似文献

神经工程是近年来在生物医学工程领域备受关注的学科发展新方向。它运用神经科学和工程学的方法来分析神经功能并为神经功能缺失与紊乱的修复提供新的解决问题的方案;而脑-机接口则是当前神经工程领域中最活跃的研究方向之一。脑-机接口是在脑与计算机或其他外部设备之间建立的直接的通信和交流通道。在脑-机接口系统中,具有特定模式的脑信号携带着受试者希望表达的意愿,计算机将接收到的脑信号转换成相应的控制命令,于是那些有运动障碍的残疾人就可以利用脑-机接口系统来实现与外界的交流与对外部设备的控制。在基于脑电信号的脑-机接口系统中,受试者产生的脑信号大致可以分为内源性(endogenous)和外源性(exogenous)两类。其中外源性的成分主要取决于外部物理刺激(视觉、听觉或触觉)的参数而与认知行为无关;而内源性成分则主要由认知行为产生而与外部的物理刺激无关。在许多情况下,脑-机接口中的瞬态诱发电位通常都同时包含着内源性和外源性两种成分。寻找新的脑-机接口模式使之能显著提升记录脑电信号中的内源性与外源性成分在脑-机接口研究中具有重要意义。本文中将介绍一种基于运动起始时刻(motion—onset)的新的脑-机接口实验范式。本文的最后还探讨了脑-机接口未来发展的趋势与展望。  相似文献

How the cilium appeared is still such a poorly defined question that current hypotheses range from a symbiotic spirochaete to a cellular eye. In this paper, the whole question is subdivided into a list of problems which are morphological, physiological and temporal. These problems are examined one by one, in order to analyse the most popular exogenous hypothesis of Margulis as well as other recent exogenous and endogenous hypotheses. To overcome fundamental topological and temporal difficulties, a new endogenous hypothesis is expounded, according to which the cilium derives from a cellular peduncle reinforced with microtubules. This hypothesis implies a geometrical rationale for the ninefold symmetry. In the last paragraph the consequences of the various hypotheses are compared.  相似文献

Defensive mechanisms, including noxious or toxic substances, are favored by predation-driven natural selection. The acquisition of noxious/toxic substances can be either endogenous, in which the substances are produced by the organism, or exogenous, in which the substances are produced by another organism and are sequestered. Evidence indicates that the defensive skin alkaloids of Neotropical poison frogs (Dendrobatidae) have an exogenous source: a diet of ants and other small alkaloid-containing arthropods, which we term the diet-toxicity hypothesis. A critical prediction of the diet-toxicity hypothesis is that independent origins of dietary specialization will be found to be correlated with independent origins of skin alkaloids. We tested this prediction in an integrated framework using comparative methods with new and published data on feeding ecology and chemical defense for 15 species of dendrobatids in five genera. We found a significant correlation between alkaloid profiles and degree of dietary specialization. This reveals a recurring association of dietary specialization and alkaloid sequestration in dendrobatids, which suggests parallel evolutionary trends in the origins of defensive mechanisms.  相似文献

The role of time in ecology has a long history of investigation, but ecologists have largely restricted their attention to the influence of concurrent abiotic conditions on rates and magnitudes of important ecological processes. Recently, however, ecologists have improved their understanding of ecological processes by explicitly considering the effects of antecedent conditions. To broadly help in studying the role of time, we evaluate the length, temporal pattern, and strength of memory with respect to the influence of antecedent conditions on current ecological dynamics. We developed the stochastic antecedent modelling (SAM) framework as a flexible analytic approach for evaluating exogenous and endogenous process components of memory in a system of interest. We designed SAM to be useful in revealing novel insights promoting further study, illustrated in four examples with different degrees of complexity and varying time scales: stomatal conductance, soil respiration, ecosystem productivity, and tree growth. Models with antecedent effects explained an additional 18–28% of response variation compared to models without antecedent effects. Moreover, SAM also enabled identification of potential mechanisms that underlie components of memory, thus revealing temporal properties that are not apparent from traditional treatments of ecological time‐series data and facilitating new hypothesis generation and additional research.  相似文献

It has been hypothesized that neural activities in the primary visual cortex (V1) represent a saliency map of the visual field to exogenously guide attention. This hypothesis has so far provided only qualitative predictions and their confirmations. We report this hypothesis’ first quantitative prediction, derived without free parameters, and its confirmation by human behavioral data. The hypothesis provides a direct link between V1 neural responses to a visual location and the saliency of that location to guide attention exogenously. In a visual input containing many bars, one of them saliently different from all the other bars which are identical to each other, saliency at the singleton’s location can be measured by the shortness of the reaction time in a visual search for singletons. The hypothesis predicts quantitatively the whole distribution of the reaction times to find a singleton unique in color, orientation, and motion direction from the reaction times to find other types of singletons. The prediction matches human reaction time data. A requirement for this successful prediction is a data-motivated assumption that V1 lacks neurons tuned simultaneously to color, orientation, and motion direction of visual inputs. Since evidence suggests that extrastriate cortices do have such neurons, we discuss the possibility that the extrastriate cortices play no role in guiding exogenous attention so that they can be devoted to other functions like visual decoding and endogenous attention.  相似文献

The hypothesis that the responsiveness of sexual behavior and LH secretion to exogenous gonadal steroid treatment is dependent on the endogenous steroid environment existing prior to treatment was tested in female rats. The major finding was that estrogen was more effective in stimulating lordosis behavior when treatment was commenced immediately after ovariectomy than when it was delayed for 6 weeks. This indicates that the sensitivity of behavior regulating mechanisms in the female rat declines after removal of the “activating” hormones, as previously reported for testosterone in the male. Similar results were obtained in groups of animals whose pattern of steroid secretion prior to ovariectomy had been changed by 2 months' exposure to constant light. The constant illumination itself showed no significant effect on behavioral responsiveness in spayed estrogen-treated rats. Results are also reported for plasma LH determinations and uterine weights in each of the experiments. Plasma LH levels were found to be lower under conditions of constant as compared to cycling light, both in spayed untreated and spayed estrogen-treated animals.  相似文献

The activation of endogenous opioid mechanisms and their subsequent effects on rodent behavior and physiology has usually been characterized following artificial stress. In this study the more naturalistic stress arising from social conflict between male mice was used to investigate the involvement of opioid systems in post-conflict analgesic and ingestive behaviors. Both the aggressive encounters and the subsequent defeat experience resulted in marked analgesia and the induction of ingestive behaviors. Feeding and drinking responses were analogous to those observed after administrations of either the endogenous opioid peptide, β-endorphin, or the exogenous opioid agonist morphine. The ingestive behaviors following defeat or central opiate administration were blocked by the opiate antagonist naloxone. The present results support the hypothesis of a direct activation of the endogenous opiate system following social conflict.  相似文献

The mechanisms of exogenous nitric oxide (NO) production through in vivo biotransformation of nitro-, nitroso-and amino-containing substances were discussed. In addition, the mechanisms of production and cellular sources of endogenous NO, appearing in the blood and tissues after the exposure to various DNA-damaging factors, have been considered. Considerable quantities of endogenous NO were detected in the body in the first hours after translation inhibition by cycloheximide or animal exposure to superlethal radiation doses, i.e., after the exposure to factors inducing destructive processes. The time and dose dependences of exogenous and endogenous NO production have been established. NO produced after a single or repeated administration of NO-donating compounds as well as endogenous NO proved to inhibit deoxyribonucleotide (dNTP) and DNA synthesis in animal tissues. Nonspecific compensatory responses to disturbed protein homeostasis included cyclic production of endogenous NO. The maximum levels of nitrosyl complexes were registered when the rate of protein synthesis decreased. The role of polyamines in the induction of macromolecule biosynthesis is discussed and NO production from these arginine-rich compounds is proposed. NO is released at the stage of polyamine inactivation. The inactivation mechanism includes the hydroxylation of aminogroups by NO synthase, the formation of nitroso intermediates, and their denitrosation with NO release.  相似文献
