Molecular phylogenetic tools are often useful in distinguishing cryptic species with similar morphologies, but they can also be helpful in identifying morphotypes of a species, which displays completely different shapes. We performed molecular-phylogenetic analysis of supra-tidal green algae in the Kamchatka peninsula that belong to the order Prasiolales (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta). Based on rbcL sequences results, two new species were recorded for the first time in Kamchatka. Approximately 1.4% of the field-collected Rosenvingiella constricta had a unique uniseriate hood-like blade shape, although their rbcL sequences were 100% identical with typical multiseriate filamentous plants. Kamchatka’s population of R. constricta showed 99.4–99.6% identity in rbcL sequences with the populations from Canada and New Zealand. Another similar-looking Rosenvingiella species collected from the same locality had 93.5% identity of the rbcL gene sequence with R. constricta. Morphological and geographical analyses also suggested that this species might be a new species of the genus Rosenvingiella. Prasiola delicata was recorded for the first time in Kamchatka. The Kamchatka population of P. delicata showed 100% identity in rbcL gene sequence with the population from Vancouver, but differed from the Canadian population morphologically.  相似文献

The white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) is an endangered species across most of its distribution range, and information on its ecological requirements is needed to implement effective conservation measures. Its habitat use has been studied in different areas and at various spatial scales. However, being a nocturnal species, there is scarce information on its habitat selection during foraging periods. In this work we analyse nocturnal habitat use of white-clawed crayfish in pools of a small stream in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula at two different scales: (1) microhabitat selection and (2) pool characteristics. Large crayfish showed a clear positive selection for deeper microhabitats, a selection pattern that was weaker for medium-sized crayfish and absent for small ones. On the other hand, crayfish of all sizes avoided cobble and boulder microhabitats and positively selected fine substrate and more exposed microhabitats. Crayfish abundance in pools was positively influenced by pool area, pool depth and the availability of fine substrates, especially silt. While studies on white-clawed crayfish habitat use have often stressed the importance of rough substrates as crayfish refuge, our results show that fine substrates are positively selected by foraging crayfish of all size classes and promoted active crayfish abundance in pools. These apparently contradictory results may be due to the differences in microhabitat preferences exhibited by active and inactive crayfish. Thus, our results help to better complete the picture of white-clawed crayfish habitat requirements.  相似文献

Two fungi collected from submerged woody debris were found to represent hitherto undescribed species of the ascomycete genera Clohiesia and Paraniesslia. They are described as Clohiesia curvispora sp. nov. and Paraniesslia aquatica sp. nov. based on morphological characters. Clohiesia curvispora is characterized by immersed ascomata under a clypeus, and unitunicate, cylindrical asci containing one-celled, curved, elongate-fusiform ascospores. Paraniesslia aquatica is characterized by small, superficial, setose ascomata, and unitunicate, clavate asci containing verrucose, brown ascospores. Each species is illustrated with light micrographs and compared with similar taxa in this article.  相似文献

Utricularia regia is described and illustrated. It occurs in the Sierra Madre del Sur region of Guerrero, Mexico, and belongs to section Psyllosperma; a key to differentiate the species of sect. Psyllosperma is included. The new species is similar to Utricularia hintonii and U. petersoniae, from which it differs in the unusual division of the upper lip of the corolla into four lobes and its peculiar coloration pattern. A table comparing the differences among these three species is presented. Utricularia regia adds a new, narrowly endemic species to the flora of Guerrero, Mexico.
Resumen  Se describe e ilustra como especie nueva para la ciencia a Utricularia regia a partir de ejemplares procedentes del estado de Guerrero, México. La nueva especie se ubica en la sección Psyllosperma y está mejor relacionada con Utricularia hintonii y U. petersoniae; de las que se diferencia por la división del labio superior de la corola en cuatro lóbulos y por su peculiar coloración; se presenta una tabla en la que se comparan más ampliamente estas tres especies y se incluye también una clave para diferenciar las especies de la sección Psyllosperma. Utricularia regia agrega un elemento endémico más a la flora de Guerrero y de México.

During the last two decades, the monostromatic green seaweed Gayralia sp. has been harvested sporadically by local fishermen on the Paraná coast of southern Brazil and sold to Japanese restaurants. However, the production is erratic and its economic impact very small. This paper provides basic information about a technique to cultivate this seaweed on suspended nets in Paranaguá Bay, southern Brazil, aiming to develop a more reliable and sustainable source of income for impoverished coastal dwellers. Gayralia sp. occurs year round in the region, usually growing on mangrove stems and roots. Polypropylene nets (10 m long × 1 m wide with 16 cm mesh) were placed close to the mangrove fringe. Recruitment occurred year round reaching a peak of 500 recruits m−2 during early spring. Higher recruitment occurred at periods of low temperature (21–23°C) and high salinity (30–33 psu). Growth rates of Gayralia sp. ranged from 5.75 ± 0.56% to 6.50 ± 0.43% day−1 during the winter and from 1.43 ± 1.65% to 4.65 ± 2.17% day−1, during the summer. Production ranged from 22 ± 6 g m−2 DW in June to 58 ± 21 g m−2 DW in September 2004 in 45 days after zooid settlement. The simplicity of the cultivation method, reasonable growth rates and extensive favorable area for cultivation suggest that mariculture of Gayralia sp. may become a good alternative of income for the local inhabitants.  相似文献

The influence of body size on the consumption of live zooplankton (Daphnia spp.) by freshwater crayfish was examined using yabbies (Cherax destructor) ranging from 5 to 45 g. Food preference between live zooplankton and inert pellets was also assessed under experimental conditions. In experimental tanks, yabbies of four size classes (<15, 15–24.9, 25–34.9 and 35–45 g) were presented with live Daphnia. All yabbies were held in separate tanks with five animals per size class. In yabbies less than 15 g, the feeding mode on zooplankton involved rapid searching and probing with the first two pairs of walking legs. Once a prey was located, the chelae on the end of these walking legs would grasp the zooplankton and then rapidly move it towards the mouthparts. Yabbies larger than 25 g tended to use their walking legs to push the Daphnia nearer to their third maxilliped which would then force or scoop the zooplankton towards the mouthparts. A short-term feeding trial showed that there was no significant difference between size classes in regards to zooplankton consumption (P > 0.05). Capture efficiency of live Daphnia by yabbies less than 15 g was significantly lower (76%, P = 0.008) than the three larger size classes (93.6%). Yabbies less than 15 g consumed a significantly (P < 0.001) higher percentage (5.2%) of their body weight than the other size classes (1.1%, 0.8%, and 0.6%, respectively). In the presence of both live zooplankton and a pellet diet, yabbies spent significantly (P = 0.005) more time feeding on zooplankton (85%) than on inert pellets (15%). This was the first study to quantify zooplankton consumption by yabbies and the results provide insights into understanding the trophic role of freshwater crayfish in structuring zooplankton communities and the husbandry management of crayfish farming. The morphological variation of recently described species (also the older taxa) of Zamia distributed within southeastern Mexico that have wide, coriaceous leaflets is analyzed. The complex is designated as the Z. katzeriana species complex in reference to an historic collection of this name, which is also the earliest named species in the complex. The complex consists of Z. cremnophila, Z. lacandona, Z. splendens and Z. purpurea. During the 1990’s, Z. splendens was separately synonymized under Z. katzeriana and Z. verschaffeltii, both collected in Mexico by German collectors during the 18th century, but the precise locality is unknown. Information concerning the incomplete holotype of Z. verschaffeltii is particularly ambiguous, and the possible type locality suggested by Schuster, Socorro, is imprecise, thus generating taxonomic confusion. Morphometric characterization and discriminant analysis of the contemporary and historic collections (i.e., Z. katzeriana and Z. verschaffeltii) included all the known populations (11) and individuals (115) of the complex throughout its range. The results show that Z. verschaffeltii is not morphometrically related to any of the species in the complex and that Z. splendens should be considered a synonym of Z. katzeriana.
Resumen  En este artículo se caracteriza la variación morfológica de las especies de un complejo de Zamia, que presentan folíolos anchos y coriáceos con distribución en el sureste de México, la mayoría de reciente descripción. El complejo es denominado Z. katzeriana, por una colección histórica de este nombre, y consiste de Z. cremnophila, Z. lacandona, Z. splendens y Z. purpurea. Zamia splendens fue sinonimizada separadamente bajo dos colecciones históricas Z. katzeriana y Z. verschaffeltii, de las cuales se desconoce con exactitud su lugar de procedencia, excepto que fueron colectadas en México por botánicos alemanes del siglo XVIII. La información, en especial sobre el holotipo incompleto de Z. verschaffeltii es muy ambigua y la posible localidad tipo mencionada por Schuster, Socorro, es imprecisa, lo cual ha generado confusiones taxonómicas. La caracterización de la variación morfométrica incluyó a todas las poblaciones (11) e individuos (115) conocidas actualmente para el complejo en todo su rango de distribución en México. El análisis discriminante incluyendo a las colecciones históricas, determina que Z. verschaffeltii no está relacionado morfométricamente con ninguna especie del complejo y Z. katzeriana está estrechamente correlacionada con Z. splendens.

Sixty-two isolates from basidiocarps of Armillaria spp. were obtained from Hokkaido Island, northern Japan. Six species (Armillaria cepistipes, A. gallica, A. nabsnona, A. ostoyae, A. sinapina, and an undescribed species, “Nag. E”) were identified by pairing tests with known tester strains and one subspecies (Armillaria mellea subsp. nipponica, a non-heterothallic form of A. mellea) was identified by its macro- and micro-morphological characters of the basidiocarps. This is the first case of “Nag. E” being reported from Hokkaido Island.  相似文献

Specimens of the type collection of Laboulbenia polymorpha Sugiyama (1978) were reexamined. The holotype, M. Ishikawa 673, is composed of three slides and includes three morphologically different forms of thalli, of which two forms were illustrated (Sugiyama 1978, fig. 1-D, 1-E). On the other hand, one of the paratypes, M. Ishikawa 674, has now been lost but photographs were made earlier from this slide, in which one mature individual illustrated as fig. 1-C (Sugiyama 1978) is included. This individual was not correctly shown in Sugiyamas illustration, but actually has a strong resemblance to a form in slide 673-b that was not illustrated by Sugiyama (1978). Thus, three different forms have been recognized as variations of L. polymorpha. In the present article, each variation was termed C-form, D-form, and E-form because Sugiyama (1978) used the same notation in his figures. A mature specimen of C-form in slide 673-b has been selected as a lectotype. Slide 673-d includes only young thalli, one of which was illustrated as fig. 1-G (Sugiyama 1978). This young thallus undoubtedly belongs to another species; mature thalli of the same species were also found in slide 673-b. Another paratype, K. Sugiyama 2101, includes C- and D-forms of L. polymorpha. Infection sites of the C- and D-forms have been determined: the C-form grows mainly on the lateral margins of the elytra of the host, and the D-form occurs mainly on the basal part of the elytra and the mesothorax.  相似文献

Two repeated DNA sequences isolated from a partial genomic DNA library of Helianthus annuus, p HaS13 and p HaS211, were shown to represent portions of the int gene of a Ty3 /gypsy retroelement and of the RNase-Hgene of a Ty1 /copia retroelement, respectively. Southern blotting patterns obtained by hybridizing the two probes to BglII- or DraI-digested genomic DNA from different Helianthus species showed p HaS13 and p HaS211 were parts of dispersed repeats at least 8 and 7 kb in length, respectively, that were conserved in all species studied. Comparable hybridization patterns were obtained in all species with p HaS13. By contrast, the patterns obtained by hybridizing p HaS211 clearly differentiated annual species from perennials. The frequencies of p HaS13- and p HaS211-related sequences in different species were 4.3x10(4)-1.3x10(5) copies and 9.9x10(2)-8.1x10(3) copies per picogram of DNA, respectively. The frequency of p HaS13-related sequences varied widely within annual species, while no significant difference was observed among perennial species. Conversely, the frequency variation of p HaS211-related sequences was as large within annual species as within perennials. Sequences of both families were found to be dispersed along the length of all chromosomes in all species studied. However, Ty3 /gypsy-like sequences were localized preferentially at the centromeric regions, whereas Ty1/ copia-like sequences were less represented or absent around the centromeres and plentiful at the chromosome ends. These findings suggest that the two sequence families played a role in Helianthusgenome evolution and species divergence, evolved independently in the same genomic backgrounds and in annual or perennial species, and acquired different possible functions in the host genomes.  相似文献

Balkwill from tropical Africa: B. aristata from south-central Tanzania, B. aenea from south-western Tanzania and northeast Zambia, and B. purpureotincta from south-western Zambia. A transient transformation system for the unicellular marine green alga, Platymonas subcordiformis, was established in this study. We introduced the pEGFP-N1 vector into P. subcordiformis with a glass bead method. P. subcordiformis was incubated in cell wall lytic enzymes (abalone acetone powder and cellulase solutions) to degrade the cell wall. The applicable conditions for production of viable protoplasts were pH 6.5, 25°C, and 3 h of enzyme treatment. The protoplast yield was 61.2% when P. subcordiformis cells were added to the enzyme solution at a concentration of 107 cell ml−1. The protoplasts were immediately transformed with the pEGFP-N1 vector using glass-bead method. The transformation frequency was about 10−5, and there was no GFP activity observed in either the negative or the blank controls. This study indicated that GFP was a sensitively transgenic reporter for P. subcordiformis, and the method of cell wall enzymolysis followed by glass bead agitation was applicable for the transformation of P. subcordiformis.  相似文献

Here we evaluate the origins and relationships of Mexican and Central American Diplazium hybrids derived from crosses involving either D. plantaginifolium or D. ternatum. Based on study of live plants and herbarium specimens, we distinguish D. ×verapax from the similar D. riedelianum and present evidence that the former is a sterile hybrid derived from a cross between D. plantaginifolium and D. werckleanum. We also describe new hybrids, D. ×torresianum and D. ×subternatum from Mexico and northern Central America. Both involve D. ternatum as one parent. Diplazium. cristatum is the other putative parent of D. ×torresianum, and D. plantaginifolium is the second parent of D. ×subternatum. We also designate lectotypes for D. cordovense and D. dissimile.  相似文献

Two populations of Chaetophora elegans (Roth) C. Agardh and two of Stigeoclonium helveticum Vischer were investigated for microhabitat characteristics and morphological variation in streams of São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. Different patterns of microhabitat distribution were found between species investigated. Populations of C, elegans were distributed under relatively narrow microhabitat conditions (high irradiance, low depth, moderate to high current velocity, rocky substrata and lower values of niche width) and showing little morphometric variation (colony diameter, main axis cell size, and apical branch number), Stigeoclonium helveticum occurred under more diverse microhabitat conditions, revealed by lack of significant difference between sampling units with and without the alga and wider niche width, but also exhibited relatively narrow morphometric variation (plant length, main axis cell and ateral branch cell sizes). The narrow microhabitat conditions and smaller niche width of C. elegans can explain its low abundance (percentage cover) in streams from the area studied as well as in other regions of São Paulo State, In contrast, the wider variation of microhabitat conditions and the higher niche widths of S. helveticum suggest that this green alga is able to grow in a high number of stream ecosystems in the region investigated, ranging from undisturbed to highly disturbed habitats. Thus. the results suggest that S. helveticum is a generalist species.  相似文献
