An inductive power link for a wireless endoscope   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
An inductive link is presented that can handle freedom of motion. The envisaged application is to power a wireless camera capsule used for non-invasive visual inspection of the small bowel. Up to 150 mW of usable dc power can be delivered to the capsule for the entire duration of its travel along the gastric track. The outer dimensions of the power receiver compartment inside the capsule are ? 10 mmx13 mm. The power efficiency of the link is measured to be 1% under worst-case geometrical conditions. The issue of patient's health and safety regarding exposure to the electromagnetic field is addressed. To this purpose, an experimental method is applied to predict specific absorption rates. Conversely, the effect of biological tissue on link performance and practical workability is evaluated as well. Electric shielding of the transmitter coil is applied to reduce biological tissue interaction. In this way, appliance on a living subject is made both safe and practically feasible.  相似文献

Hip endoprosthesis for in vivo measurement of joint force and temperature.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Friction between the prosthetic head and acetabular cup increases the temperature in hip implants during activities like walking. A hip endoprosthesis was instrumented with sensors to measure the joint contact forces and the temperature distribution along the entire length of the titanium implant. Sensors and two inductively powered telemetry units are placed inside the hip implant and hermetically sealed against body fluids. Each telemetry unit contains an integrated 8-channel telemetry chip and a radio frequency transmitter. Force, temperature and power supply data are transmitted at different frequencies by two antennas to an external twin receiver. The inductive power supply is controlled by a personal computer. Force and temperature are monitored in real time and all data are stored on a video tape together with the patient's images. This paper describes the design and accuracy of the instrumented implant and the principal function of the external system components.  相似文献

A new system for continuous measurement of oxygen uptake by means of a telemeter has been developed. Oxygen uptake and pulmonary ventilation during rest and exercise were determined using a portable oxygen consumption meter (Oxylog). A small interface circuit between the Oxylog and the transmitter of a frequency modulated bio-telemeter system was designed and installed inside the Oxylog. Data from the transmitter were passed to a receiver and were fed into a microcomputer system. The microcomputer system displayed and printed out minute values of ventilation and oxygen uptake. The accuracy and reliability of the new system were checked by comparison with the traditional (Douglas bag) method. In the range less than 80 l.min-1 of ventilation and less than 2 l.min-1 of oxygen uptake, the system was not inferior to the Douglas bag method. The new system was applied for field continuous measurement of oxygen uptake during a doubles tennis game. The results of the application indicate that the telemetry system developed here is a very practical and useful way of measuring oxygen uptake during sports activities.  相似文献

The prospective of using direct‐write printing techniques for the manufacture of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) has made these techniques highly attractive. OPVs have the potential to revolutionize small‐scale portable electronic applications by directly providing electric power to the systems. However, no route is available for monolithically integrating the energy‐harvesting units into a system in which other components, such as transistors, sensors, or displays, are already fabricated. Here, the fabrication and the measurement of inkjet‐printed, air‐processed organic solar cells is reported for the first time. Highly controlled conducting and semiconducting films using engineered inks for inkjet printing enable good efficiencies for printed OPVs between ≈2 and 5% power conversion efficiency. The results show that inkjet printing is an attractive digital printing technology for cost‐effective, environmentally friendly integration of photovoltaic cells onto plastic substrates.  相似文献

A photo-medical capsule that emits blue light for Helicobacter pylori treatment was described in this paper. The system consists of modules for pH sensing and measuring, light-emitting diode driver circuit, radio communication and microcontroller, and power management. The system can differentiate locations by monitoring the pH values of the gastrointestinal tract, and turn on and off the blue light according to the preset range of pH values. Our experimental tests show that the capsule can operate in the effective light therapy mode for more than 32 minutes and the wireless communication module can reliably transmit the measured pH value to a receiver located outside the body.  相似文献

A radio-telemetry recording system is presented which is applied to stimulate specific brain areas and record neuronal activity in a free-roaming rat.The system consists of two major parts:stationary section and mobile section.The stationary section contains a laptop,a Micro Control Unit (MCU),an FM transmitter and a receiver.The mobile section is composed of the headstage and the backpack (which includes the mainboard,FM transmitter,and receiver),which can generate biphasic microcurrent pulses and simultaneously acquire neuronal activity.Prior to performing experiments,electrodes are implanted in the Ventral Posterolateral (VPL) thalamic nucleus,primary motor area (M 1) and Medial Forebrain Bundle (MFB) of the rat.The stationary section modulates commands from the laptop for stimulation and demodulates signals for neuronal activity recording.The backpack is strapped on the back of the rat and executes commands from the stationary section,acquires neuronal activity,and transmits the neuronal activity singles of the waking rat to the stationary section.All components in the proposed system are commercially available and are fabricated from Surface Mount Devices (SMD) in order to reduce the size (25 mm × 15 mm × 2 mm) and weight (10 g with battery).During actual experiments,the backpack,which is powered by a rechargeable Lithium battery (4 g),can generate biphasic microcurrent pulse stimuli and can also record neuronal activity via the FM link with a maximum transmission rate of 1 kbps for more than one hour within a 200 m range in an open field or in a neighboring chamber.The test results show that the system is able to remotely navigate and control the rat without any prior training,and acquire neuronal activity with desirable features such as small size,low power consumption and high precision when compared with a commercial 4-channel bio-signal acquisition and processing system.  相似文献

Walter (Jahrb Wiss Bot 87:750–860, 1939) proposed a two-layer hypothesis, an equilibrium explanation for coexistence of savanna trees and grasses. This hypothesis relies on vertical niche partitioning and assumed that grasses are more water-use efficient than trees and use subsurface water while trees also have access to deeper water sources. Thus, in open savannas, grasses were predicted to predominate because of their water use efficiency and access to subsurface water. This hypothesis has been a prominent part of the savanna literature since first proposed. We review the literature on Walter’s hypothesis and reconsider his original intentions. Walter intended this hypothesis to be restricted to dry savannas. In his opinion, mesic and humid savannas were controlled by biotic factors and disturbances. We surveyed the global savanna literature for records of vertical niche partitioning by grasses and trees. We find that, within the scope of Walter’s original intentions, this hypothesis works remarkably well, and in some cases is appropriate for deserts as well as for dry temperate systems and even some mesic savannas.  相似文献

We propose a new structure for artificial joints with a joint capsule which is designed to overcome the drawback of current prostheses that omit many functions of the lubricant and the joint capsule. The new structure is composed of three components: lubricant, artificial joint and artificial joint capsule. The lubricant sealed in the capsule can not only reduce the wear of the artificial joint but also prevents the wear particles leaking into the body. So unexpected reactions between the wear particles and body can be avoided completely. A three-dimensional (3-D) finite element analysis (FEA) model was created for a bionic knee joint with capsule. The stresses and their distribution in the artificial capsule were simulated with different thickness, loadings, and flexion angles. The results show that the maximum stress occurs in the area between the artificial joint and the capsule. The effects of capsule thickness and the angles of flexion on stress are discussed in detail.  相似文献

Bifunctional sensor transmitter modules of two-component systems exert both positive and negative control on the receiver domain of the cognate response regulator. In negative control, the transmitter module accelerates the rate of phospho-receiver dephosphorylation. This transmitter phosphatase reaction serves the important physiological functions of resetting response regulator phosphorylation level and suppressing cross-talk. Although the biochemical reactions underlying positive control are reasonably well understood, the mechanism for transmitter phosphatase activity has been unknown. A recent hypothesis is that the transmitter phosphatase reaction is catalysed by a conserved Gln, Asn or Thr residue, via a hydrogen bond between the amide or hydroxyl group and the nucleophilic water molecule in acyl-phosphate hydrolysis. This hypothetical mechanism closely resembles the established mechanisms of auxiliary phosphatases such as CheZ and CheX, and may be widely conserved in two-component signal transduction. In addition to the proposed catalytic residues, transmitter phosphatase activity also requires the correct transmitter conformation and appropriate interactions with the receiver. Evidence suggests that the phosphatase-competent and autokinase-competent states are mutually exclusive, and the corresponding negative and positive activities are likely to be reciprocally regulated through dynamic control of transmitter conformations.  相似文献

Background  

Gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy has been popularly applied for the diagnosis of diseases of the alimentary canal including Crohn's Disease, Celiac disease and other malabsorption disorders, benign and malignant tumors of the small intestine, vascular disorders and medication related small bowel injury. The wireless capsule endoscope has been successfully utilized to diagnose diseases of the small intestine and alleviate the discomfort and pain of patients. However, the resolution of demosaicked image is still low, and some interesting spots may be unintentionally omitted. Especially, the images will be severely distorted when physicians zoom images in for detailed diagnosis. Increasing resolution may cause significant power consumption in RF transmitter; hence, image compression is necessary for saving the power dissipation of RF transmitter. To overcome this drawback, we have been developing a new capsule endoscope, called GICam.  相似文献

A three-channel biotelemetry system measuring ECG, respiration, and body temperature is described. The transmitter employs a 6-kHz subcarrier oscillator and is small enough for surgical implantation in animals the size of rats or larger. The frequency modulated 6-kHz tone from the reciver can be demodulated directly or recorded on an inexpensive cassette tape recorder for future analysis. The transmitter cost is approximately $35.00 and measures 3 times 1 cm. A battery life of several weeks and transmitter range of 10-100 m is typical. Transmission is on the FM broadcast band (88-108 MHz) and reception from an inexpensive FM portable receiver is possible.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In Arabidopsis thaliana, ethylene perception and signal transduction into the cell are carried out by a family of membrane-bound receptors, one of which is ethylene resistant 1 (ETR1). The large cytoplasmic domain of the receptor showed significant sequence homology to the proteins of a common bacterial regulatory pathway, the two-component system. This system consists of a transmitter histidine kinase and a response regulator (or signal receiver). We present the crystal structures of the first plant receiver domain ETRRD (residues 604-738) of ETR1 in two conformations. RESULTS: The monomeric form of ETRRD resembles the known structure of the bacterial receiver domain. ETRRD forms a homodimer in solution and in the crystal, an interaction that has not been described previously. Dimerization is mediated by the C terminus, which forms an extended beta sheet with the dimer-related beta-strand core. Furthermore, the loop immediately following the active site adopts an exceptional conformation. CONCLUSIONS: The three-dimensional structure of ETRRD shows the expected conformational conservation to prokaryotic receiver proteins, such as CheY and CheB, both of which are part of the chemotaxis signaling pathway. ETRRD provides the first detailed example of a dimerized receiver domain. Given that the dimer interface of ETRRD coincides with the phosphorylation-dependent interfaces of CheY and CheB, we suggest that the monomerization of ETRRD is phosphorylation-dependent too. In the Mg(2+)-free form of ETRRD, the gamma-loop conformation does not allow a comparable interaction as observed in the active-site architectures of Mg(2+)-bound CheY from Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium.  相似文献

The innate immune system is the body’s first defense against invading microorganisms, relying on the recognition of bacterial-derived small molecules by host protein receptors. This recognition event and downstream immune response rely heavily on the specific chemical features of both the innate immune receptors and their bacterial derived ligands. This review presents a chemist’s perspective on some of the most crucial and complex components of two receptors (NOD1 and NOD2): starting from the structural and chemical characteristics of bacterial-derived small molecules, to the specific proposed models of molecular recognition of these molecules by immune receptors, to the subsequent post-translational modifications that ultimately dictate downstream immune signaling. Recent advances in the field are discussed, as well as the potential for the development of targeted therapeutics.  相似文献

A miniature radiotelemetry transmitter is described suitable for chronic or acute monitoring of temperatures from animal or human subjects. The transmitters can be easily constructed with little or no electronics background from discrete components readily available from any electronics supplier. Transmitters weighed from 2.5-20 g, had volumes of 0.8-3.5 ml, had normal currents of 50-120 muA with potential transmitter lives of 35 h to greater than 1 yr, and transmission ranges of 10-30 m. Transmitters could be implanted, swallowed, or connected to chronically or acutely attached temperature probes. The design of the telemetry system allows for reception on any commercial FM receiver. Depending on mode of decoding the temperature data transmitter signal can be accurate to measure changes of from 0.15 to 0.015 degrees C. Thus with a minimum of expense and little electronics background a temperature-dependent transmitter system can be constructed for monitoring temperatures from unrestrained subjects.  相似文献

为弄清榆木蠹蛾Holcocerus vicarius Walker幼虫的发育情况及预测其发生时间, 通过测量榆木蠹蛾幼虫的头壳宽、 体长、 体宽、 前胸背板宽、 上颚长和上颚宽, 运用Crosby生长法则和线性回归方法分析来找出判定幼虫龄数的最佳形态指标, 推断其幼虫的龄数。结果表明: 各龄幼虫头壳宽平均值的变异系数和Crosby指数最小, 其他5项指标的变异系数和Crosby指数较大, 头壳宽为最佳分龄指标。根据头壳宽将榆木蠹蛾幼虫分为20龄, 不同龄幼虫头壳宽值符合Dyar定律提出的幼虫头壳宽增长规律, 头壳宽和龄数的回归方程为y=0.233+1.686x+0.127x2-0.005x3 (R2=0.996)。榆木蠹蛾幼虫龄数的确定为研究其发生规律、 生物学习性及进行综合防治提供依据。  相似文献

From a semiotic perspective biological mimicry can be described as a tripartite system with a double structure that consists of ecological relations between species and semiotic relations of sign. In this article the focus is on the mimic who is the individual benefiting from its resemblance to the cues or signals of other species or to the environment. In establishing the mimetic resemblance the question of mimic’s activity becomes crucial, and the activity can range from the fixed bodily patterns to fully dynamic behavioural displays. The mimic’s activity can be targeted at two other participants of the mimicry system—either at the model or at the receiver. The first possibility is quite common in camouflage and there are several possibilities for mimic’s activity to occur: selecting a resting place or habitat based on conformity with the environment, changing body coloration to correspond to the surrounding environment, covering oneself with particles of the soil. In its activity aimed at the model, the mimic develops a strong semiotic connection with its specific perceptual environment or part of it and obtains a representational character. In the second possibility the activity of a mimetic organism is aimed at the receiver who is confused by the resemblance, and between the two participants an active communicative interaction is established. Such type of mimicry can be exemplified by abstract threat displays found in various groups of animals, for instance a toad’s upright posture as a response to the presence of a snake. From the semiotic viewpoint it can be interpreted as the motive of fear in the predator’s Umwelt being entered into the mimic’s subjective world and manifested in its behaviour. The mimetic organism ends up in an ambiguous position, where it needs to pretend to be something other than it is. In the final part of the article it is argued that the mimetic sign is basically a false designator as the mimic’s activity to become a sign is aimed at a specific type of signs. Rather than signifying belonging to its own species or group, a mimetic sign indicates that its carrier belongs to the type of some other species. The tension between the form and behaviour of mimetic organisms arises from the discrepancy between the type of organism that it essentially is and the type of organism that the mimetic sign it carries imposes on it.  相似文献

The long-term loosening of artificial hip joints remains a serious clinical problem. Optimization of implant design and material will improve the fixation, but it requires a detailed knowledge of the forces which act on the implant. A four-channel telemetric transmitter was developed and arranged completely inside a hermetically closed artificial hip joint. This permits long term in vivo measurements of the three-dimensional forces without endangering the patient. The external telemetry system consists of an inductive power supply, an RF receiver, a microcomputer with hardware extension and a VHS video system. The personal computer offers real-time data processing of three orthogonal force components as well as slow motion analysis of recorded measurements. After several years of animal tests, two instrumented prostheses were implanted in the first patient (male) in May and August of 1988. In March 1990 a third prosthesis was implanted in a second patient (female). Joint force measurements have regularly been performed from the first post-operative day until now for several kinds of activity.  相似文献

The interaction of body‐worn antennas with the human body causes a significant decrease in antenna efficiency and a shift in resonant frequency. A resonant slot in a small conductive box placed on the body has been shown to reduce these effects. The specific absorption rate is less than international health standards for most wearable antennas due to small transmitter power. This paper reports the linear relationship between power absorbed by biological tissues at different locations on the body and radiation efficiency based on numerical modeling (r = 0.99). While the ?10 dB bandwidth of the antenna remained constant and equal to 12.5%, the maximum frequency shift occurred when the antenna was close to the elbow (6.61%) and on the thigh (5.86%). The smallest change was found on the torso (4.21%). Participants with body‐mass index (BMI) between 17 and 29 kg/m2 took part in experimental measurements, where the maximum frequency shift was 2.51%. Measurements showed better agreement with simulations on the upper arm. These experimental results demonstrate that the BMI for each individual had little effect on the performance of the antenna. Meaningful testing of stab resistant body armour requires the use of realistic body tissue simulants. A device for the determination of the force-displacement behaviour of materials in high impact loading situations has been developed for the testing of such simulants. Force measurement is achieved with the use of electrical foil strain gauges applied to a cylindrical load cell. A piezo-resistive accelerometer (+/- 500 g) is used to calculate the displacement of the device through double integration of its signal, with the impact velocity used as a boundary condition. The signals from the strain gauge circuit and the accelerometer are sampled at 2500 Hz. The data are transmitted to a receiver via telemetry using a 418 MHz FM transmitter and from the receiver to a laptop PC via the serial port. Calibration of the device is described and sample results showing forces up to 2500 N and displacements up to 0.04 m are presented.  相似文献

The public health situation in Sweden has become drastically worse since the Autumn of 1997. A massive roll-out of GSM main transmitter towers and roof-mounted transmitters that became allowed after mid-1997 led to a booming sale of GSM handsets all over Sweden. The authorities in Sweden have issued a brochure on ‘Radiation from Mobile Systems’ [] stating that good transmitter coverage leads to low handset output power that can vary from 2 W down to 0.001 W []. Thus, we examined health statistics data and GSM coverage in all counties in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Here, we show that there is a very strong correlation between health degradation and weak GSM coverage, while there is no such relation noticed for the time period 1981–1991 when no handset power regulation was applied. The immediate implications from this study are the needs for: 1) a deeper analysis of handset power levels and health statistics and, 2) reconsideration of the planned massive roll-out of yet another mobile system (3G).  相似文献
