The paper reconstructs the governance of genomics by sketching the main features, modes of operation and tactics of the emerging genomics apparatus. Genomic governance in the 20th century is characterized by the simultaneous operation of a process of the stabilization of knowledge regimes, in particular via patenting. Furthermore, we observe a heterogenization and globalization of the actors and knowledge creating systems in genomics governance. A variety of different mechanisms and strategies of governance are mobilized simultaneously. The transition of governing via risk to governance by uncertainty is another important feature of contemporary genomics governance. The implications of these trends for the regulation of genomics are considerable and might lead to the emergence of new patterns and spaces of conflict and controversy. The governance of genomics in the 21st century could become a more complex challenge than currently anticipated by many policy makers and the scientific community.  相似文献

Abstract

When the Human Genome Project (HGP) was launched, our genome was presented as our ‘blueprint’, a metaphor reflecting a genetic deterministic epistemology. Eventually, however, the HGP undermined rather than strengthened the understanding of genomes as blueprints and of genes as ultimate causal units. A symbolical turning point was the discovery that the human genome only contains~22,500 genes. Initially, this was seen as a narcissistic offence. Gradually, however, it strengthened the shift from traditional genetics and biotechnology (i.e., gene-oriented approaches) to genomics, i.e. genome-oriented or systems approaches, emphasizing complexity. The 20th century can be regarded as the century of biotechnology and of the gene. Its history demonstrated that the will to know (notably: to know ourselves) has never been a disinterested affair: it is driven by a will to improve (notably: to improve ourselves). In this article it is claimed that, as genomics takes us beyond a genetic deterministic understanding of life, this must have consequences for societal research and debate as well. Policies for self-improvement will increasingly rely on the use of complex interpretation. Therefore, the emphasis must shift from issues such as genetic manipulation and human enhancement to issues involved in governance of novel forms of information.  相似文献

BackgroundThe integration of genome-based knowledge into public health or public health genomics (PHG) aims to contribute to disease prevention, health promotion, and risk reduction associated with genetic disease susceptibility. Men and women differ, for instance, in susceptibilities for heart disease, obesity, or depression due to biologic (sex) and sociocultural (gender) factors and their interaction. Genome-based knowledge is rapidly increasing, but sex and gender issues are often not explored.ObjectiveTo explore the implications of a sex and gender analysis for PHG.MethodsWe explore genome-based knowledge in relation to sex and gender aspects using depression as an example, gender equality, and the intersection of sex and gender with other social stratifiers such as ethnic background or socioeconomic status.ResultsWe advocate a sex- and gender-sensitive genomics research agenda alongside studies that provide sex-disaggregated data rather than controls based on sex. Such a research agenda is needed to guide research on how genomics is understood and perceived by men and women across groups, and for the equitable and responsible translation of such knowledge into the public health domain.ConclusionsIncluding sex and gender analysis in PHG research will not only shed more light on phenomena such as diseases with a higher prevalence in either men or women, but will ultimately lead to gendered innovations by way of exploring how gendered and cultural environments increase or safeguard genetic predispositions.  相似文献

Abstract

The successful commercial introduction of the Turkey red textile dyeing process from Western and South Asia into Western Europe occurred via France in the mid 18th century. The French state was deeply involved in facilitating this technology transfer. During the later half of the century, French dyers from Rouen were involved in a further transfer of this process into Great Britain. In particular, the efforts of Scottish dyers to recruit and utilize the knowledge and skills of M. Papillon, the ambiguous role of the Scottish Board of Manufactures, and the assistance of Professors Black and Hope are described. The eventual success of such ventures resulted in the implementation of the Turkey red process industrially in Glasgow by 1785.  相似文献

Abstract

The current achievement of genome sequence projects of a dozen eukaryote organisms (including human genome) and the development of functional genomics are providing the basic knowledge required to utilize gene-specific reagents for both basic understanding of cell physiology and therapeutical development. The field of chemical genomics has the ambitious goal of designing molecules that could act selectively on every single gene or gene product in a cell and in vivo. The progress in oligonucleotide-based approaches will be the topic of this review, however, other nucleic acid- and SELEX-based approaches as well as high sequence-specific low molecular weight DNA-specific ligands will also be discussed.  相似文献

The mapping and sequencing of the human genome has been the 'Holy Grail' of the new genetics, and its publication marks a turning point in the development of modern biotechnology. However, the question remains: what has been the impact of this discovery on how biotechnology develops in science, and in society at large? Using concepts developed in the social studies of science and technology, the paper begins by rehearsing the historical development of the Human Genome Project (HGP), and suggests that its translation into genomics has been achieved through a process of 'black-boxing' to ensure stabilization. It continues by exploring the extent to which the move to genomics is part of a paradigm shift in biotechnology resulting from the conceptual and organizational changes that have occurred following the completion of HGP. The discussion then focuses on whether genomics can be seen as part of the development of socially robust knowledge in late modernity. The paper suggests that there is strong evidence that a transformation is indeed taking place. It concludes by sketching a social scientific agenda for investigating the reconstitution of the new genetics in a post-genomic era using a 'situated' analytic approach based on an understanding of techno-scientific change as both emergent and contingent.  相似文献

Despite its high economic importance, little is known about rose genetics, genome structure, and the function of rose genes. Reasons for this lack of information are polyploidy in most cultivars, simple breeding strategies, high turnover rates for cultivars, and little public funding. Molecular and biotechnological tools developed during the genomics era now provide the means to fill this gap. This will be facilitated by a number of model traits as e.g., a small genome, a large genetic diversity including diploid genotypes, a comparatively short generation time and protocols for genetic engineering. A deeper understanding of genetic processes and the structure of the rose genome will serve several purposes: Applications to the breeding process including marker-assisted selection and direct manipulation of relevant traits via genetic engineering will lead to improved cultivars with new combinations of characters. In basic research, unique characters, e.g., the biosynthesis and emission of particular secondary metabolites will provide new information not available in model species. Furthermore comparative genomics will link information about the rose genome to ongoing projects on other rosaceous crops and will add to our knowledge about genome evolution and speciation. This review is intended as a presentation and is the compilation of the current knowledge on rose genetics and genomics, including functional genomics and genetic engineering. Furthermore, it is intended to show ways how knowledge on rose genetics and genomics can be linked to other species in the Rosaceae in order to utilize this information across genera.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Mainland Portugal is not renowned for having been a whaling nation of significance. However, preliminary studies have brought to light enough historical references to suggest that whaling occurred from at least the 13th century, and the present work identifies 38 historical sources documenting whale use or whaling on the Portuguese coast between 1201 and 1728. A peak of whale-related sources occurred during the 13th and 14th centuries, and almost all Portuguese accounts are contemporary to those found from the French and Spanish Basque countries, such that the beginning of the whaling activity seems to be coeval. No geographical cluster of whaling activities can be established—they seem to have been unevenly scattered along the entire coastline. Nor can a chronological north–south movement of coastal whaling activities be discerned. The geographical and chronological patterns give support to the assumption that whaling was not introduced to Portugal by the Basques, who are known to have spread westward from the French Labourd (11th century), via Golf of Biscay, to Asturias, and southward to Galicia (14th century). Rather, Portuguese whale use seems to have originated independently of Basque influence. Several of the sources specify “black whales” as the target species. This is consistent with modern knowledge about the distribution and migration patterns of North Atlantic right whales during Basque medieval and early modern whaling. The Portuguese sources are not clear as to numbers of whales taken, nor to the whaling technology used, but the activity was sufficiently well organized and developed to warrant the levying of tithes in the feudal system of 13th-century Portugal.  相似文献

This article examines the interactions between the media and genomics, with particular reference to the case of deCODE Genetics in Iceland. It focuses on the role of "forward-looking statements" and other forms of speculation as they operate in the science of genomics, in the social relations that happen around genomics, and in the commercial genomics economy. The article discusses how these fundamentally anticipatory speech acts uttered or written by genomic corporate executives, journalists, or social scientists are simultaneously volatile, exceeding any formal practices of accounting or analysis, and demanding to be accounted for, analysed, or valued. The article discusses four speculative events or cases in the genomics economy: the March 2000 bursting out of the genomics bubble, prompted in part by remarks by President Clinton and Prime Minister Blair to the media concerning gene patenting; the new disclosure requirements of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding "forward-looking statements" as they appear in genomics press releases; deCODE Genetics' registration statement with the SEC that discloses a settlement of a dispute over the ownership of a fragment of DNA; and the entanglement between the author's ethnographic fieldwork and the breaking news story of reported payoffs from deCODE to the Icelandic political parties.  相似文献

As a result of expanding scientific understanding of the interplay between genetics and dietary risk factors, those involved in nutritional management need to understand genetics and nutritional genomics in order to inform management of individuals and groups. The aim of this study was to measure and determine factors affecting dietitians’ knowledge, involvement and confidence in genetics and nutritional genomics across the US, Australia and the UK. A cross-sectional study was undertaken using an online questionnaire that measured knowledge and current involvement and confidence in genetics and nutritional genomics. The questionnaire was distributed to dietitians in the US, Australia and the UK using email lists from the relevant professional associations. Data were collected from 1,844 dietitians who had practiced in the previous 6 months. The main outcomes were knowledge of genetics and nutritional genomics and involvement and confidence in undertaking clinical and educational activities related to genetics and nutritional genomics. Mean scores for knowledge, involvement and confidence were calculated. Analysis of variance and χ 2 analysis were used to compare scores and frequencies. Multivariate linear regression was used to determine predictors of high scores. The results demonstrated significant differences in involvement (p < 0.001) and confidence (p < 0.001) but not knowledge scores (p = 0.119) between countries. Overall, dietitians reported low levels of knowledge (mean knowledge score 56.3 %), involvement (mean number of activities undertaken 20.0–22.7 %) and confidence (mean confidence score 25.8–29.7 %). Significant relationships between confidence, involvement and knowledge were observed. Variables relating to education, experience, sector of employment and attitudes were also significantly associated with knowledge, involvement and confidence. Dietitians’ knowledge, involvement and confidence relating to genetics and nutritional genomics remain low and further investigation into factors contributing to this is required.  相似文献

For over a century the Mexican state has justified its control of forests by claiming that rural people are ignorant and destructive fire setters, in the face of abundant evidence to the contrary. Academic and popular stereotypes of the state have tended to assume that official power and knowledge go hand in hand. In an institutional ethnography ofthe Mexican environment agency, SEMARNAP, I. show how official ignorance is deployed both within and outside state forestry institutions, and how ignorance and complicity may be as important as knowledge in asserting state power. Rather than internalizing official fire discourse, rural people in Mexico learn to mouth polite fictions in their encounters with officials. I argue that the scholarship on governmentality derived from Foucault has uncritically internalized the link between power and knowledge. A closer attention to the production and translation of knowledge within state institutions leads to a more nuancedunderstanding of various forms of obscurity and ignorance which accompany official knowledge claims. Soybean (Glycine max) is one of the most important cultivated plants worldwide as a source of protein‐rich foods and animal feeds. Anthracnose, caused by different lineages of the hemibiotrophic fungus Colletotrichum, is one of the main limiting factors to soybean production. Losses due to anthracnose have been neglected, but their impact may threaten up to 50% of the grain production.TaxonomyWhile C. truncatum is considered the main species associated with soybean anthracnose, recently other species have been reported as pathogenic on this host. Until now, it has not been clear whether the association of new Colletotrichum species with the disease is related to emerging species or whether it is due to the undergoing changes in the taxonomy of the genus.Disease symptomsTypical anthracnose symptoms are pre‐ and postemergence damping‐off; dark, depressed, and irregular spots on cotyledons, stems, petioles, and pods; and necrotic laminar veins on leaves that can result in premature defoliation. Symptoms may evolve to pod rot, immature opening of pods, and premature germination of grains.ChallengesAs accurate species identification of the causal agent is decisive for disease control and prevention, in this work we review the taxonomic designation of Colletotrichum isolated from soybean to understand which lineages are pathogenic on this host. We also present a comprehensive literature review of soybean anthracnose, focusing on distribution, symptomatology, epidemiology, disease management, identification, and diagnosis. 目的 了解手术室护士专科培训需求,为合理设置手术室专科护士培训内容,探索培训模式提供依据。方法 采用自拟问卷,对参加2013年黑龙江省手术室专科培训的学员进行问卷调查,采用SPSS 18.0进行卡方检验和非参数检验进行统计分析。结果 不同年龄以及不同职称的护士希望得到培训的内容有显著性差异(P < 0.05),教学方式与考核方式趋于多样化,以临床实际操作为主,OSCE考核被青年护士所接受。在学员培训内容重要性认知评价的9个方面中手术室专科知识最为重要。结论 重视和发展护士分层级核心能力,构建多样化的手术室专科护士培训模式,进一步提升专科护理培训质量。  相似文献

目的 运用休哈特控制图对科室临床路径运行指标(完成比例、变异率)实施预警控制管理。方法 选择某科室2016年1—12月份临床路径运行数据,绘制该科室临床路径完成比例、变异率休哈特控制图(P控制图),结合临床诊疗特点自设预警控制指标及控制点。结果 利用休哈特控制图(P控制图),实时对该科室临床路径完成比例、变异率预警控制,分别针对该二项指标给予2次预警控制,督促分析整改。结论 休哈特控制图可以全面展现科室临床路径运行趋势、增加不同科室间临床路径运行的可比性、实时预警纠偏科室临床路径的不良运行,降低运行惯性;作为一项精细化管理的重要工具,要求实施者具有统计、临床、管理等相关知识储备。  相似文献

Biobanks are collections of human biological tissue used for genomics research. This promises a better understanding of the gene-based contribution to common disease and development of a more personalized approach to healthcare with safer drugs and more effective treatment. However, biobanks are also controversial owing to the ethical, legal, social and political issues raised about their collection and use of biological samples. Therefore, their democratic governance is not only a normative challenge but also an empirical one. This paper is concerned with both challenges: it attempts to “evaluate” processes of democratic governance of genomics by focusing on the case of UK Biobank. The overall argument is that although the UK Biobank performs well in terms of general democratic governance structures, there are epistemological and practical limits to specific democratic governance processes.  相似文献

Abstract  We recall first the progress of human knowledge in the first twenty years of our 20th century. In the years 1920–1935 we had the advent of quantum mechanics, which changed and advanced our understanding of physics. This progress is due to a group of scientists who were born at the beginning of the last century. Enrico Fermi made a fundamental contribution to the new era with his theoretical original ideas (the Fermi Statistics and the theory of weak interactions), and with the experimental discovery of the properties of neutrons and their use in the development of nuclear energy for civil purposes. 【目的】创伤弧菌是致死率最高的弧菌物种,但目前尚无在全基因组层面挖掘毒力相关因子的研究。本研究以创伤弧菌分离来源(临床和环境)作为不同表型,通过与260株基因组序列进行关联分析,挖掘毒力相关因子,从而进一步了解创伤弧菌致病因素。【方法】对139株创伤弧菌分离株进行高通量测序,获取其全基因组序列;与公共数据库已公开发表的121株基因组整合,使用pyseer软件进行全基因组关联分析,对与不同分离来源显著相关的基因进行注释和解读。【结果】共发现11个基因与临床分离株显著相关,其中9个是本研究新发现的创伤弧菌潜在毒力相关因子。【结论】本研究使用群体基因组学和统计遗传学方法,在全基因组范围扫描挖掘了创伤弧菌毒力相关因子,为深入揭示该物种致病机制、设计新的疫苗和治疗靶点提供了重要依据。  相似文献
