The social behaviour of high and medium elevation colonies of yellow-bellied marmots in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, were studied. The medium elevation animals were consistently larger, exhibiting greater physical spacing, lower frequencies of greeting and upright playfighting, and a higher agonistic component than did those of the more closely-integrated high-elevation colony. These results are interpreted as part of a complex series of adaptations within the genus Marmota to variations in ecology related to growing season.  相似文献

The maternal behaviour of three species of voles was compared using a semi-naturalistic laboratory system. Meadow vole females spent more time out of the nest, and exhibited less maternal behaviour in terms of nursing and brooding, and more non-social behaviour such as locomoting, eating, and drinking, than the females of the other two species. Across all species, maternal behaviour decreased from parturition onward, while non-social behaviour increased. Paternal care was well developed in the prairie vole and pine vole, but was never observed in the meadow vole. During the first postnatal week, male prairie voles showed a tendency to enter the nest when the female left the young unattended. This trend was not apparent in the male pine vole. The physical parameters of pup development, including eye opening and the development of fur, were similar in all three species. Behavioural development, however, was most rapid in the meadow vole, intermediate in the prairie vole, and slowest in the pine vole. These results are compared with those of previous field and laboratory studies, and are discussed with reference to the life-history strategy of each species.  相似文献

Field studies of the social organization of yellow-bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventris) in the vicinity of Gothic, Colorado, were initiated in 1962. Data collected during the subsequent 14 years are sufficient to analyse the behaviours that correlate with the time yearling male and yearling female marmots leave their natal home sites. Dispersal of yearling male yellow-bellied marmots was delayed when there were many yearling males in a harem, when yearling males were underweight, and when the rates of amicable interactions between yearling males and adults were high. Dispersal of yearling females was delayed when adults behaved amicably toward them and when the rates of adult aggression were low. Dispersal of yearling females was independent of the number of females in a harem. These observations are in accord with a model of dispersal that relates sexual differences in dispersal to maternal reproductive tactics, and to responses of yearlings that would maximize their own fitness.  相似文献

Marathrum schiedeanum and Marathrum rubrum are annual Podostemaceae, thus their seeds are important to their dispersal and persistence in their habitat. We assessed the effect on germination of (1) light (white, red and far red) and darkness, (2) temperature (15, 20, 25, 30 °C and alternating 20/30 °C), (3) osmotic potential (0 to −0.8 MPa), (4) proximity to moisture sources and (5) seed storage. Seeds of M. schiedeanum and M. rubrum were non-dormant and had a high germination capacity (96%). Seeds were positive photoblastic; at 15 °C germination drop to zero, and germination rate was slower at 20 °C and at 20/30 °C than at 25 °C. A small proportion of seeds of both species germinated even at osmotic potentials as low as −0.6 MPa (11%) for M. rubrum and −0.8 MPa (70%) for M. schiedeanum. Seeds germinated only when near to the source of moisture (91.3–87.1% and 53.3–35.6% for M. schiedeanum and M. rubrum, respectively) and 2 years in dry storage did not modify their capacity to germinate. At the beginning of the rainy season, light and temperature in the rivers may be high enough for germination. The ability to germinate at low osmotic potential may be related to early germination during the rainy season. This may be because the seed mucilage assists in diffusion of water from the substrate to the seed. Both species germinated faster at −0.06 MPa, than in distilled water, which may indicate appropriate conditions for germination of these short-lived species.  相似文献

Yellow-bellied marmots (M. flaviventris) acclimated to Ta = 20 °C were implanted with U-shaped polyethylene thermodes in the peridural space of the spinal cord. Decreasing the temperature of the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar areas of the cord increased heart rate, electromyographic activity, and oxygen consumption in the animals. These responses differed qualitatively from those elicited by heating the same cord areas, indicating specificity of the response to the temperature change.Increases in heat production were proportional to the amount of cooling of the cord. The thoracic area was found to be more thermosensitive than the lumbar area. No behavioral or physical thermoregulation was apparent when the spinal cord temperature was changed in these animals.In addition to the conclusion that regulation of spinal cord temperature may be important in the euthermic marmot, it was postulated that the temperature receptors located in the thoracic cord of the marmot may be important in maintaining shivering thermogenesis during arousal from hibernation.  相似文献

Male Wistar rats were injected intraperitoneally with either saline, L-trytophan, D,L-5hydroxytryptophan, L-tyrosine, L-DOPA or choline and killed by the near-freezing method 15 and 45 min after injection. The brains were removed, pulverized and acetylcholine, dopamine, norepinephrine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, aspartate, glutamate, glycine and γ-aminobuttyric acid wwere extracted and concurrently measured using previously reported methods. Compared to saline injected controls, some precursors not only resulted in changes in the specific neurotransmiter systems being pertubated, but also changes in the content of other neurotransmitters.  相似文献

The social behaviour of four colonies of hoary marmots (Marmota caligata) was studied in Glacier National Park, Montana, during the summer of 1970. Colony structure involved a dominant male with a few females (3 years or older), 2-year-olds, yearlings and pups. Patterns of burrow use, greetings, play, and aggressive chasing are described, indicating a closely-integrated social structure with reproductive patterns suggesting late dispersal and maturation. A close resemblance to the behaviour of the Olympic marmot (M. olympus) is proposed.  相似文献

The preoptic anterior hypothalamus (POAH) thermoregulatory controller can be characterized by two types of control, an adjustable setpoint temperature and changing POAH thermal sensitivity. Setpoint temperatures for shivering (Tshiver) and panting (Tpant) both increased with decreasing ambient temperature (Ta), and decreased with increasing Ta. The POAH controller is twice as sensitive to heating as to cooling. Metabolic rate (MR) increased during both heating and cooling of the POAH. Resting temperature of the POAH was lower than internal body temperature (Tb) at all temperatures. This indicates the presence of some form of brain cooling mechanism. Decreased Tb during POAH heating was a result of increased heat dissipation, while higher Tb during POAH cooling was a result of increased heat production and reduced heat dissipation. The surface temperature responses indicated that foxes can actively control heat flow from body surface. Such control can be achieved by increased peripheral blood flow and vasodilation during POAH heating, and reduced peripheral blood flow and vasoconstriction during POAH cooling. The observed surface temperature changes indicated that the thermoregulatory vasomotor responses can occur within l min following POAH heating or cooling. Such a degree of regulation can be achieved only by central neural control. Only surface regions covered with relatively short fur are used for heat dissipation. These thermoregulatory effective surface areas account for approximately 33% of the total body surface area, and include the area of the face, dorsal head, nose, pinna, lower legs, and paws.  相似文献

Summary The cellular processes loaded with neurosecretory elementary granules penetrate the ependyma and project into the third ventricle at the level of preoptic nucleus of Zoarces viviparus L. These cellular processes seem to be arising from the neurosecretory cells. At this zone, not all but some of the ependymal cells have a cilium. Lipid synthesis from leucine by fat cells of Glossina morsitans in vitro was inhibited by dopamine, adrenaline, noradrenaline and octopamine. Noradrenaline and octopamine were most active with maximal response occurring at 10?4 and 10?5 M respectively. The release of free fatty acids and the synthesis of proline from alanine by fat cells were stimulated by octopamine but not by the other amines. Maximal release of material from fat cells occurred at an octopamine concentration of 10?2 M but at higher concentrations the response was diminished.The inhibition of lipid synthesis by octopamine was blocked by the α-adrenergic antagonist phentolamine but not by the β-adrenergic antagonist propranolol. Neither receptor-blocking-agent affected the action of corpora cardiaca extracts upon fat cells indicating that separate receptors are present for amines and the peptide hormones.  相似文献

Myriophyllum spicatum L. is a nonindigenous invasive plant in North America that can displace the closely related native Myriophyllum sibiricum Komarov. We analyzed the chemical composition (including: C, N, P, polyphenols, lignin, nonpolar extractables, and sugars) of M. spicatum and M. sibiricum and determined how the chemistry of the two species varied by plant part with growing environment (lake versus tank), irradiance (full sun versus 50% shading), and season (July through September). M. spicatum had higher concentrations of carbon, polyphenols and lignin (C: 47%; polyphenols: 5.5%; lignin: 18%) than M. sibiricum (C: 42%; polyphenols: 3.7%; lignin: 9%) while M. sibiricum had a higher concentration of ash under all conditions (12% versus 8% for M. spicatum). Apical meristems of both species had the highest concentration of carbon, polyphenols, and tellimagrandin II, followed by leaves and stems. Tellimagrandin II was present in apical meristems of both M. spicatum (24.6 mg g−1 dm) and M. sibiricum (11.1 mg g−1 dm). Variation in irradiance from 490 (shade) to 940 (sun) μmol of photons m−2 s−1 had no effect on C, N, and polyphenol concentrations, suggesting that light levels above 490 μmol of photons m−2 s−1 do not alter chemical composition. The higher concentration of polyphenols and lignin in M. spicatum relative to M. sibiricum may provide advantages that facilitate invasion and displacement of native plants.  相似文献

The superoxide dismutase from Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the only Cu-containing superoxide dismutase that lacks zinc in the active site. To explore the structural properties of this unusual enzyme, we have investigated its stability by differential scanning calorimetry. We have found that the holo-enzyme is significantly more stable than the apo-protein or the partially metallated enzyme, but that its melting temperature is markedly lower than that of all the other characterized eukaryotic and prokaryotic Cu,Zn superoxide dismutases. We have also observed that, unlike the zinc-free eukaryotic or bacterial enzymes, the active site copper of the mycobacterial enzyme is not reduced by ascorbate, confirming that its redox properties are comparable to those typical of the enzymes containing zinc in the active site. Our findings highlight the role of zinc in conferring stability to Cu,Zn superoxide dismutases and indicate that the structural rearrangements observed in M. tuberculosis Cu,SOD compensate for the absence of zinc in achieving a fully active enzyme.  相似文献

Using video cameras and motion detection software, we examined sequential positions of the lizard Podarcis carbonelli in a temperature gradient to look for patterns in spatial and temporal thermoregulatory movements. As lizards shuttled between warm and cool areas, their movements were typically slow; punctuated by bursts of speed. The animals were relatively inactive when heating, moved almost continually when cooling, and spent less time heating than cooling. Traditional modeling techniques proved unsuccessful, so we assessed the movement patterns with nonlinear dynamical techniques. The shuttling frequency, and the pattern of velocity changes, both met the qualitative attributes (self similarity, strange attractors, and noisy power spectra) and the quantitative criteria (positive Lyapunov exponent and capacity and/or correlation dimensions less than 5) that suggest deterministic chaos. These movement patterns appear regular, but at unpredictable times the patterns become disturbed before returning to regulation. There are both behavioral and physiological advantages to movements that follow a model of deterministic chaos control.  相似文献

Munida gregaria is the most abundant galatheid crab species in the Beagle Channel (55 °S 68 °W) off Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. This species has two different and simultaneous feeding habits: predator and deposit feeder. The objectives of this work were to determine whether either of the two different feeding habits imply differences in assimilation and oxygen consumption. Subsamples of 40 and 20 crabs of each sex were randomly selected, transported to the laboratory, and used in assimilation and oxygen consumption experiments, respectively. Animals were placed in individual chambers at 8 ± 1 °C. The assimilation experiment was conducted using four types of diet: isopods (CRU), algae (ALG), pulverized fish food (PFF), and particulate organic matter (POM). The crabs' routine metabolism and postprandial oxygen consumption - or specific dynamic action SDA - were measured using Clark-type polarographic electrodes. Two kinds of food were offered: CRU and PFF to simulate both feeding habits. Assimilation in M. gregaria for both feeding habits presented values > 90% for dry mass and energetic content. Consumption rate varied between 15 and 50 mgingested gDM− 1, and was significantly higher for CRU and PFF diets. Females showed significantly higher consumption rates than males for all diets. On average, the routine metabolism of M. gregaria was 15 ± 5 μlO2 h− 1 g− 1. Deposit feeding may confer energetic advantages to female M. gregaria, especially because this diet has a low energetic cost of assimilation. Deposits of high-energy content showed the highest consumption rates among four the experimental diets. In terms of mass and energy, the deposit diet also showed the highest assimilation efficiency. The postprandial oxygen consumption was lower in females and in the deposit feeding experiment. We suggest that females may prefer the deposit feeding habit to maximize their ingested energy, allowing them to devote more energy to reproduction. This is attained by a high consumption rate and by minimizing the energy used in assimilation.  相似文献

The effects of histidine and histamine on branchial vascular haemodynamics were studied using the isolated, perfused gill of the tropical cichlid, Oreochromis (Sarotherodon) niloticus. Histidine had no vasoactive effect while histamine induced vasodilatation. Histamine-induced vasodilatation was irreversibly inhibited by the H1 and H2 receptor antagonists, piriton and cimetidine, respectively. This suggests a possible involvement of the non-neurogenic histaminergic system, acting directly via H1 and H2 histamine receptors, in the regulation of branchial vascular haemodynamics in teleosts.  相似文献

Rugopharynx rosemariae new species is described from the stomachs of grey kangaroos, Macropus giganteus Shaw, 1790 and Macropus fuliginosus (Desmarest, 1817) from south-eastern Australia. The new species differs from other species of the genus in spicule length and in the length and shape of the oesophagus. Parasitic life-cycle stages are described from natural infections; free-living life-cycle stages were obtained by culturing eggs from gravid females. Third stage larvae burrow into the gastric mucosa producing small elevated nodules resulting from a localized fibroplastic and inflammatory reaction in the lamina propria and submucosa. Fourth stage and adult worms occur in the stomach lumen. Rugopharynx brevis (Canavan, 1931) is made a synonym of Rugopharynx australis (Mönnig, 1926).  相似文献
