direct gradient analysis was applied to the montane vegetation of the Mt. Field massif, Tasmania. Ecological response surface were constructed, describing the relationship between the mean % cover of each of 100 vascular plant species and two major environmental complex-gradients represented by soil drainage and altitude. The hypotheses tested were that: (1) the ecological responses of species are generally of Gaussian form; (2) the modes of minor species have a uniform random distribution along gradients; (3) the modes of major species are evenly distributed; (4) the frequency distribution over species of modal abundance is either lograndom or lognormal; and (5) alpha diversity has a unimodal trend along environmental gradients. The hypotheses were tested both for the full site of vascular species and for each of five species groups defined by structural form. Hypothesis (1) was rejected: only 45% of species had response surface which appeared unimodal and symmetric. Hypotheses (2) and (4) were rejected for the full set of species, but each was supported for all but one of the structural groups. The modes of herb species were clumped, rather than random and the frequency distribution of modal percentage cover for shrubs was inconsistent with both lograndom and lognormal hypotheses. Contrary to hypothesis (3), the modes of major species were randomly distributed. Although total alpha diversity had a complex trend surface, the patterns for the alpha diversities of each structural group were unimodal, in accordance with hypothesis (5). The results suggest that an adequate model of community variation along environmental gradients must take into account differences in response patterns between species groups.  相似文献

One cornerstone of ecological theory is that nutrient availability limits the number of species that can inhabit a community. However, the relationship between the spatial distribution of limiting nutrients and species diversity is not well established because there is no single scale appropriate for measuring variation in resource distribution. Instead, the correct scale for analyzing resource variation depends on the range of species sizes within the community. To quantify the relationship between nutrient distribution and plant species diversity, we measured NO3- distribution and plant species diversity in 16 paired, modified Whittaker grassland plots in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. Semivariograms were used to quantify the spatial structure of NO3- from scales of 0.4–26 m. Plant species diversity (Shannon-Weiner diversity index; H ) was quantified in 1-m2 plots, while plant species richness was measured at multiple spatial scales between 1 and 1,000 m2. Small-scale variation in NO3- (<0.4 m) was positively correlated with 1-m2 H , while 1,000-m2 species richness was a log-normal function of average NO3- patch size. Nine of the 16 grassland plots had a fractal (self-similar across scales) NO3- spatial distribution; of the nine fractal plots, five were adjacent to plots that had a non-fractal distribution of NO3-. This finding offered the unique opportunity to test predictions of Ritchie and Olff (1999): when the spatial distribution of limiting resources is fractal, communities should display a left-skewed log-size distribution and a log-normal relationship between net primary production and species richness. These predictions were supported by comparisons of plant size distributions and biomass-richness relationships in paired plots, one with a fractal and one with a non-fractal distribution of NO3-. In addition, fractal plots had greater large-scale richness than paired non-fractal plots (1,0–1000 m2), but neither species diversity (H ) nor richness was significantly different at small scales (1 m2). This result is most likely explained by differences in the scale of resource variation among plots: fractal and non-fractal plots had equivalent NO3- variation at small scales but differed in NO3- variation at large scales (as measured by the fractal dimension). We propose that small-scale variation in NO3- is largely due to the direct effects of plants on soil, while patterns of species richness at large scales is controlled by the patch size and fractal dimension of NO3- in the landscape. This study provides an important empirical step in understanding the relationship between the spatial distribution of resources and patterns of species diversity across multiple spatial scales.  相似文献

Over 2 years, experiments were conducted tocompare the effects of sediment disturbance by different bioturbating, macrofaunal organisms on the diversity and structure of the associated infaunal community. The four species investigated were the bivalves Nuculoma tenuis (Montagu, 1808) and Abra alba (Wood, 1802), the heart urchin Brissopsis lyrifera (Forbes, 1841), and the burrowing decapod Calocaris macandreae (Bell, 1846). These organisms were chosen to allow assessment of the effects of contrasting feeding activities and body sizes of the bioturbating species on the diversity of the macrobenthic communities. Bioturbation by the sub-surface deposit feeders N. tenuis and B. lyrifera promoted higher levels of and diversity in treatments exposed to intermediate levels of disturbance. Whilst no such intermediate response was demonstrated for A. alba or C. macandreae, it was evident that changes in the associated fauna were influenced by the feeding type of the bioturbating organism responsible. It was also shown that different elements of the associated community responded differently to biotic disturbance. The results indicate that the variability in density and distribution of such bioturbators are important factors in structuring infaunal communities, and in setting and maintaining levels of diversity in apparently homogeneous areas.  相似文献

Summary Several null models are proposed for testing whether size or habitat differences in West IndianAnolis lizards are greater than expected by chance. The models differ primarily in choice of the pool from which species are sampled to form random communities. Regardless of choice of pool, size differences in the Lesser Antilles are greater than null models predict; the pool using species on the known source (Puerto Rico) gives a greater variance in ratios but about the same mean ratio (for males), or a greater mean ratio (for females), compared with the pool composed of species on the islands being tested (the Stronget al., 1979, Galápagos procedure). On satellite islands of the Greater Antilles, sizes do not differ more than expected from null models. Pools composed of mainland-source species give null communities with more small or more large ratios than those composed of island species, depending upon whether four-species islands are included or excluded, respectively. Colwell and Winkler's unmodified Narcissus hypothesis is contradicted by these results in procedures where species not likely to be able to occur on small islands are included in the species pool. Using the most biologically reasonable, but not other, choices of source pool, species on satellite islands of the Greater Antilles differ more in structural habitat then expected by chance. In contrast to some of the results on size, here mainland-source pools are more likely to produce a statistically significant difference between real and random communities, as predicted by the Narcissus hypothesis. However, exclusion of structural habitat categories not found on satellite islands is necessary to achieve this significance.  相似文献

A desirable property of a diversity index is strict concavity. This implies that the pooled diversity of a given community sample is greater than or equal to but not less than the weighted mean of the diversity values of the constituting plots. For a strict concave diversity index, such as species richness S, Shannon's entropy H or Simpson's index 1-D, the pooled diversity of a given community sample can be partitioned into two non-negative, additive components: average within-plot diversity and between-plot diversity. As a result, species diversity can be summarized at various scales measuring all diversity components in the same units. Conversely, violation of strict concavity would imply the non-interpretable result of a negative diversity among community plots. In this paper, I apply this additive partition model generally adopted for traditional diversity measures to Aczél and Daróczy's generalized entropy of type . In this way, a parametric measure of -diversity is derived as the ratio between the pooled sample diversity and the average within-plot diversity that represents the parametric analogue of Whittaker's -diversity for data on species relative abundances.  相似文献

We test the hypothesis that the biodiversity of the death assemblage of shelled molluscs (gastropods and bivalves) on a single sandflat is representative of the biodiversity of the regional living fauna from the complete spectrum of habitat types, and can therefore be used as a surrogate for the purposes of rapid biodiversity assessment. Two biodiversity indices considered appropriate for such an assessment are average taxonomic distinctness (+) and the variation in taxonomic distinctness (+), which are, respectively, measures of the degree to which the species are taxonomically related to each other (i.e. the average taxonomic spread), and the degree to which taxa are over or under represented (i.e. the evenness of the distribution across the taxonomic tree). In each case, measured values were compared with the regional living species pool using a randomisation test. Collections and identifications of shells were made by both a non-expert in mollusc taxonomy and by taxonomic experts, the latter using microscopic examination of sediment samples as well as simple surface searches for macro-species. In all studies, + for the gastropods in the death assemblage was fully representative of the regional living fauna, but for bivalves it was significantly lower. This is because most of the bivalves were characteristic of the sandflat habitat, which introduced a bias, whereas post-mortem transport of gastropods, characterising exotic habitats, is more random. For gastropods, in all studies but one, + was significantly higher than expected from a random sample of the regional species pool, and for bivalves this was the case for all studies, suggesting the over-representation of some taxa and the under-representation of others. For the total shelled molluscan fauna (gastropods + bivalves) all + values were below, and all + values above, expectation. Results obtained by experts and a non-expert in mollusc taxonomy did not differ. In general, death assemblages at a single location are only likely to be representative of a wider region if there is randomisation as a result of post-mortem transport processes.  相似文献

Summary From September 1979 to October 1980 in two types of biotopes (in the stream at Kali and in the Biaa Przemsza River near Jaroszowiec, southern Poland)P.amnicum, P.milium, P.subtruncatum, P.nitidum, P.personatum, P.casertanum andP. sp.non det. were found.P.amnicum was accepted as an indicator species for the river community, andP.milium for the stream. The irregular changes of species composition of the sphaeriid community in the stream at Kali are rather accidental and the only temporary occurrence ofP.nitidum, P.personatum andP. sp.non det. in the Biaa Przemsza River might be connected with seasonal migration.The dominance structure of thePisidium community in the stream agrees with the model described by CONNELL (1977) for the communities of large sedentary animals and plants. The dominance relations in the river community are similar to the situation described by CONNELL (1977) as characteristic for small lakes and islands.The density of the Sphaeriidae on the chosen habitat in the Biaa Przemsza River oscillated between 300 and 3.300 ind./m2 and it reached almost 130.000 ind./m2 in the stream at Kali.The SHANNON-WIENER's diversity index (H) and that of equitability or evenness of species abundances (J) had low values during the whole period of investigation.This study was performed as part of the Problem MRII/15 of the Polish Academy of Sciences.  相似文献

Genomic DNA blot analyses using probes derived from the BALB/c 3 flanking region of the L d gene (L d 3 fl-C) and from near the BALB/c D3 d gene (50.2A) indicate that the B10.GAA37 mouse strain has a multi-locus D (D w16) region distinct from the five-gene organization observed in the D d and D q regions. To isolate the D w16 region class I genes, a genomic B10. GAA37-EMBL3 library was generated and screened with probes that preferentially hybridize to K and D region class I genes. Hybridization analyses of the isolated clones with L d derived oligonucleotide probes suggested that one of the clones contained the L w16 gene, whereas several other clones contained the L w16 gene. The sequence of the D w16 gene is most similar to that of the D p gene, particularly in the 3 half. Furthermore, the L w16 gene is quite similar in the 5 half and virtually identical in the 3 half to the L d gene, indicating that L w16, but not D w16, is a member of the L d gene family. Collectively, these data suggest that, through a D region recombination event, the novel D w16 region may have been assembled from primordial counterparts of the D p and L d genes.The nucleotide sequence data reported in this paper have been submitted to the GenBank nucleotide sequence database and have been assigned the accession number M60774-M60776, and M62759.  相似文献

All four species of Australian quolls (Dasyurusspecies) have declined since European settlement in terms of bothrange and population numbers. Six highly polymorphic simplesequence repeats (CAn microsatellites) were used to estimate thegenetic variability and population differentiation within andamong twenty populations (including museum specimens from sixpopulations), as a preliminary means of assessing populationconservation status and relative levels of variability withinmembers of the genus. Overall mean expected heterozygosity (HE)and corrected allelic diversity (A) were highest among westernquolls. Northern quolls, eastern quolls, and tiger quolls werenot significantly different from each other in either measure. There were also significant differences in diversity amongpopulations within species. Genetic differentiation wasestimated by a number of methods and showed that themicrosatellites used here were useful for defining differencesboth among species and populations. Allele frequency data weresummarised by two-dimensional MDS, which was able to partitionpopulations into distinct species clusters. Similarly, theassignment test was able to assign most individuals to both thecorrect species and population levels. Results of MDS and theassignment test may prove useful in forensic applications. Genetic distance and subdivision between pairs of populationswere assessed by two means based on different mutation models formicrosatellites: infinite alleles model (Nei's D, FST) andstepwise mutation model (Goldstein's mu;2, RST). Pairwisemeasures of population subdivision indicate that most populationsshould be conserved as separate management units. We discussresults of these analyses in terms of applications toconservation for each of the four Australian species of quoll andprovide a genetic basis for future population monitoring in thesespecies.  相似文献

Novel NMR pulse schemes for simultaneous measurement of 1 D CHand 2 D NHresidual dipolar couplings in proteins is presented. We show that 2 D NHcoupling can be very useful for protein structure determination. The 2 D NHcoupling can be measured from 15N dimension with good accuracy on a slowly relaxing TROSY resonance, utilizing HNCA-TROSY-based experiments, which concomitantly supply large 1 D CHcoupling. The dynamic range of 2 D NHcoupling is comparable to 1 D NC coupling, but instead, it also serves non-redundant information on the course of protein backbone, thanks to rotational degree of freedom with respect to peptide bond. The HNCA-TROSY-based experiments are optimal for measuring residual dipolar couplings at high magnetic fields owing to absence of rapid transverse relaxation of carbonyl carbon. The reliability of the proposed approach was tested on 15N/13C human ubiquitin. A very good correlation with ubiquitin solution as well as crystal structure, for both 1 D CHand 2 D NHcouplings, was obtained.  相似文献

The Caesalpinia hintonii complex is formed by five endemic species (C. hintonii, C. laxa, C. macvaughii, C. melanadenia and C. epifanioi) occurring in central Mexico. This species complex is under incipient genetic divergence as by-product of local adaptations in reproductive and morphological traits to different habitats. We estimate the genetic variation and structure of populations of this species complex to assess the extent of genetic differentiation among populations and related species along its geographic distribution. Estimations of genetic diversity and structure were done based on ten enzymes and 18 loci. Mean number of alleles per locus ranged from 1.5 to 1.9. Polymorphic loci ranged from 42.1 to 68.4. Observed (Ho: range 0.191–0.275) and expected (He: range 0.205–0.317) heterozygosities in this complex were higher compared with other endemic and legume species. Neis genetic diversity estimates showed that most genetic variation was found within (HS = 0.325) rather than among populations (DST = 0.085). Populations of the species C. hintonii showed a considerable genetic differentiation (FST = 0.207). The results of genetic diversity and structure within and among populations are in accord with the great morphological differentiation described for this species complex.  相似文献

The question of whether beta-2 microglobulin (B2m)-independent expression of the mouse major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigen H-2Db results from the atypical glycosylation pattern associated with this MHC antigen (i. e., three glycans instead of two) has been addressed. Cell-surface expression of transfected H-2Db in the B2m deficient cell line RIE was completely abolished by the drug tunicamycin (Tm). Introduction of a functional B2m gene by transfection did not re-establish cell-surface expression of Db in the presence of Tm. Tm had no effect, however, on the expression of a truncated Db molecule lacking the 1 and 2 domains which is glycosylated at amino acid position 256, suggesting that the Db molecule, unlike other class I antigens, possesses an unstable conformation in the 1 and/or 2 domains which requires the attachment of glycans before it is transported to the cell surface. Once attached, however, glycans may confer a stable 1/2 conformation apparently peculiar to Db which allows cell-surface expression in the absence of B2m.  相似文献

Modern forestry has created stands with even age distribution of trees and fragmentation of the habitat. In boreal forests, the effects on biodiversity within many taxa need to be examined. We tested the hypothesis that species richness of foliose and fruticose lichens and spiders is positively related in the lower canopy of spruce (Picea abies) in forests with, or without, management in central Sweden. High species richness of lichens may increase the structural complexity of the microhabitat on spruce branches, and bring a higher species richness also in the spider community. In six areas, spruce branches were sampled in old-growth and managed boreal forest stands, respectively. Forest management did not affect the species richness of spiders or lichens, but an effect due to sampling area was found in the latter taxon. There was a significant covariation between species richness of lichens and spiders, and the hypothesised positive correlation was confirmed by separate analyses for each area and combining the probabilities. Moreover, regression analysis on mean values from each site revealed a positive relationship. We conclude that species richness of lichens and spiders covary on spruce branches for functional reasons, i.e. more lichen species promotes a more diverse spider community by increasing the structural heterogeneity. Our results might provide a shortcut for assessing biodiversity in boreal forests.  相似文献

To address how habitat destruction and hierarchical competition among species affect the spatio-temporal dynamics of a multi-species community, we present a compartment model in which multiple species undergo dispersal and competitive interactions in a patchy habitat arranged in a two-dimensional lattice. We assume that disturbances are periodically imposed on some parts of the lattice in a block, followed by a period free of disturbance. For convenience, species are ranked in order of competitive ability. We further assume that the intrinsic growth rate of species i, i , and the dispersal ability, D i , increase in decreasing order of rank. Our model can analytically determine the exact number of surviving species when disturbance is absent. In the presence of disturbance, we numerically examine how spatio-temporal changes in environmental heterogeneity affect species coexistence and extinction, for the case in which the value of i /D i monotonically increases or decreases with rank. The results demonstrate that (1) when the interspecific competition is smaller than the intraspecific competition, we can provide predictions on the prospective order of species to be driven extinct and the order of potential species to revive with increasing extents of disturbance; (2) when the interspecific competition is stronger than intraspecific competition, a small difference in the disturbance level can lead to drastic changes in the species composition, their densities and the order of species extinction. In addition, comparison with other similar models reveals that differences in species interaction in local population dynamics critically affect the disturbance-mediated species diversity.  相似文献

The main features of an interstitial ciliate community, living in the coastal sand of the Mediterranean sea, were analyzed during a one-year survey, carried out on 113 samples. The community was composed of 56 species, 31 of which belong to 8 resident genera. Total density varied from 0 to 410 individuals cm–3 and followed a Spring-Summer and an Autumn-Winter trend, not related to temperature or to any single abiotic variable (interstitial dissolved O2, grain sand size, salinity), although the density of some taxa was related to one abiotic factor. During Spring, diversity increased by a synchronous bloom involving the whole community. Some taxa, such as the predator Lacrymaria and its prey Frontonia, were significantly associated. The finding of the simultaneous bloom of congeneric species, like that of the genus Remanella suggests that they respond to the same environmental factors, and avoid interspecific competition.  相似文献

Recently, two distinct cDNA clones encoding the catalytic subunit of the vacuolar H+-ATPase (V-ATPase) were isolated from the allotetraploid cotton species Gossypium hirsutum L. cv Acala SJ-2 (Wilkins 1992, 1993). Differences in the nucleotide sequence of these clones were used as molecular markers to explore the organization and structure of the V-ATPase catalytic subunit genes in the A and D genomes of diploid and allotetraploid cotton species. Nucleotide sequencing of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products amplified from G. arboreum (A2, 2n=26), G. raimondii (D5, 2n=26), and G. hirsutum cv Acala SJ-2 [(AD)1, 2n=4x=52] revealed a V-ATPase catalytic subunit organization more complex than indicated hitherto in any species, including higher plants. In the genus Gossypium, the V-ATPase catalytic subunit genes are organized as a superfamily comprising two diverse but closely related multigene families, designated as vat69A and vat69B, present in both diploid and allotetraploid species. As expected, each vat69 subfamily is correspondingly more complex in the allotetraploid species due to the presence of both A and D alloalleles. Because of this, about one-half of the complex organization of V-ATPase catalytic subunit genes predates polyploidization and speciation of New World tetraploid species. Comparison of plant and fungal V-ATPase catalytic subunit gene structure indicates that introns accrued in the plant homologs following the bifurcation of plant and fungi but prior to the gene duplication event that gave rise to the vat69A and vat69B genes approximately 45 million years ago. The structural complexity of plant V-ATPase catalytic subunit genes is highly conserved, indicating the presence of at least ten introns dispersed throughout the coding region.  相似文献

The degree to which abundances are divided equitably among community species or evenness is a basic property of any biological community. Several evenness indices have been proposed to summarize community structure. However, despite their potential applicability in ecological research, none seems to be generally preferred. In this paper we show that, unlike other evenness indices without any clear information-theoretical meaning, Hill's parametric diversity measure E ,0 has an immediate relation to Rényi's generalized information. Therefore, E ,0 might be adequate for summarizing community structure within the context of a general theoretical framework of diversity analysis based on information theory.  相似文献

Summary The sex ratios of three Mesopolobus species were found to vary in different hosts in a gall-forming community in Berkshire. These relationships were consistent with Charnov's host size—sex ratio hypothesis (Charnov 1979). Due to the segregation of host species on different species of Quercus, it was possible to conduct a geographical variation experiment proposed by Charnov et al. (1981). The results of this experiment suggest that the parasitoids have a fixed rule of thumb and are not flexible in their sex allocation in response to changes in host size distribution. The data, therefore, do not support the prediction of Charnov's hypothesis. Problems associated with this kind of field experiment are discussed.  相似文献

The rotifer fauna of 19 mostly small water bodies (natural and artificial ponds, clay-pits and pools) in Pozna was studied on four occasions during 1996–98 to determine the suitability of urban areas for rotifer habitats. Rotifers were present in all the water bodies studied, with 114 species in 39 genera found, representing ca. 25% of all rotifers recorded from Poland. Mean diversity was 10 spp (range 1–36). Most common were: Brachionus angularis and Keratella cochlearis (spring), Colurella uncinata, Lecane closterocercaand Lepadella patella (summer) and L. closterocerca and K. cochlearis (autumn). Rotifer densities (1-1503 ind l–1), Shannon's diversity (H 0.00-3.71) and dominant species differed in different water-bodies. The index of percentage similarity of community showed strong differences in qualitative structure of rotifer assemblages. The different types of water habitats, both the existing or the newly created in towns, may explain the relatively high diversity of rotifer communities observed in the urban areas studied.  相似文献

Species diversity and richness, and seasonal population dynamics of phytoplankton, planktonic protozoa, and bacterioplankton sampled from the epilimnion of Crystal Bog in 2000, were examined in order to test the hypothesis that these groups diversity and abundance patterns might be linked. Crystal Bog, a humic lake in Vilas County, Wisconsin, is part of the North Temperate Lakes Long-Term Ecological Research Site. Phytoplankton and planktonic protozoa were identified and enumerated in a settling chamber with an inverted microscope. Bacterial cells were enumerated with the use of fluorescence 4, 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI)-staining procedures, and automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (ARISA) was used to assess bacterioplankton diversity. Bacterial cell counts showed little seasonal variation and averaged 2.6 × 106 cells/mL over the ice-free season. Phytoplankton and planktonic protozoan numbers varied by up to two orders of magnitude and were most numerous in late spring and summer. Dinoflagellates largely dominated Crystal Bog throughout the ice-free period, specifically Peridiniopsis quadridens in the spring, Peridinium limbatum in summer, and Gymnodinium fuscum and P. quadridens in fall. Brief blooms of Cryptomonas, Dinobryon, and Synura occurred between periods of dinoflagellate domination. The dominant dinoflagellate, Peridinium limbatum, was calculated to have a growth rate of 0.065 day–1 and a doubling time of 10.7 days. Heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNFs) were a consistent component of the planktonic protozoa; seasonal patterns were determined for three genera of HNFs (Monosiga, Bicosoeca, and Desmarella moniliformis). Three genera of ciliates (Coleps, Strobilidium, and Strombidium) comprised the greater part of the planktonic protozoa in Crystal Bog. The number of species of planktonic protozoa was too low to calculate a diversity index. Shannon–Weaver diversity indices for phytoplankton and bacterioplankton in the epilimnion followed very similar seasonal patterns in this lake, supporting the hypothesis that in freshwaters, diversity patterns of these groups are linked.  相似文献
