The stomach contents of 516 Pomatomus saltatrix and 506 Cynoscion guatucupa from southern Brazil were examined. Both species preyed primarily upon teleosts and crustaceans and occasionally squid. Seasonal variation in the diet was related to prey availability in the area, confirming the opportunistic feeding behaviour of both species. During the summer, P. saltatrix preyed upon four prey species (Loligo sanpaulensis, Artemesia longinaris, Mullus argentinae and Paralonchurus brasiliensis), whereas in the autumn and winter Engraulis anchoita was the predominant prey. C. guatucupa similarly preyed upon A. longinaris and P. brasiliensis during the summer, with juvenile C. guatucupa and E. anchoita also consumed. The latter species was an important dietary constituent during other seasons, as were A. longinaris (autumn), Umbrina canosai (winter), Trachurus latami and euphausids (spring). Although P. saltatrix had a broader diet than C. guatucupa during the summer, the latter species had a broader diet overall. Diet breadths were lower from autumn to spring, due to the predominance of E. anchoita in the diet of both species. This restricted diet resulted in significant intra- and inter-specific diet overlap during the winter but, because of the seasonal abundance of E. anchoita, the high levels of diet overlap do not necessarily indicate competition.  相似文献

The Brazilian codling (Urophycis brasiliensis) is the target of an important artisanal fishery in Uruguay. In the present study we analysed the feeding habits of this species over a 2‐year cycle. The samples were obtained from landings of the artisanal fishery at two sites on the Uruguayan coast: one representing a transitional habitat between estuarine and marine conditions (Piriápolis), the other representing a typical marine ecosystem (La Paloma). Different approaches were considered (Index of Relative Importance, IRI; graphical methods and multivariate techniques of cluster analysis and Principal Component Analysis). The ontogenetic changes in the diet were also assessed. Stomach contents of 870 individuals were analysed and a total of 24 prey species identified. The shirmp Artemesia longinaris has the highest IRI (89.9%) score followed by Cynoscion guatucupa (IRI = 4.3%). Molluscs were only marginally represented (IRI < 0.01%). Both the graphical method of Cortés and the method of Amundsen indicate the specialization of Brazilian codling to A. longinaris. However, a trend to a generalist diet evolves in bigger fishes, which also consume fishes in important quantities, mainly C. guatucupa. Moreover, opportunism is occasionally present both seasonally and spatially, and responds to variations of the availability of prey items throughout its distribution. U. brasiliensis predation plays an important role in the trophic dynamics of the SW Atlantic ecosystem. It is dependent on shrimp for feeding, a reason for an integrated management of coastal habitat and fisheries of both resources. The dependence of Brazilian codling, mainly when it is small, on shrimp calls for an integrated management of both the coastal habitat and fisheries.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze the feeding habits of the juvenile striped weakfish, Cynoscion guatucupa Cuvier, from Bahía Blanca estuary, Argentina. C. guatucupa is one of the most important regional fishing resources although in the last 10 years landings have greatly decreased. The year class strength of fish as well as stock size and yield are determined during the early life stages. Knowledge about the diet of young C. guatucupa may therefore contribute to our better understanding of the influence that the changes occurring in the biota of the estuary exert on the abundance fluctuations of this species. To this end, we investigated the ontogenetic and seasonal dietary changes of C. guatucupa between 1.00 and 12.99 cm total length (age 0+), and we related them to changes in habitat use and prey selection. Two dietary shifts were found during ontogeny. The first shift, at approximately 4 cm total length, involved a change from demersal-pelagic prey (mysid shrimps) to demersal-benthic prey (Peisos petrunkevitchi Burkenroad). The second shift, at approximately 8 cm total length, involved a progressive increase in ichthyophagy (mainly an increase consumption of the Argentine anchovy Engraulis anchoita Hubbs & Marini). Seasonal dietary changes were also found. They evidenced the changes in the availability of organisms. In autumn, the chaetognath Sagitta friderici Ritter-Zahoni, P. petrunkevitchi, and E. anchoita were the dominant prey items; in winter, the copepod Labidocera fluviatilis Dahl along with S. friderici, mysids, and P. petrunkevitchi constituted the majority of the diet; and, in summer, mysids were the most important prey item consumed. Selectivity data showed that whereas some prey items, such as the copepods Acartia tonsa Dana and Paracalanus parvus (Claus) and S. friderici, were consistently negatively selected by all size classes throughout the year, other prey items, such as fish larvae, mysids, and P. petrunkevitchi, were selected in one season and avoided in another. Additional dietary seasonal differences observed in our research indicate that the limited food supply and the low water temperatures are limiting factors for winter juveniles in BahÕa Blanca estuary. These factors may also directly influence the more-than-10 cm total length seaward migration of large numbers of C. guatucupa that is registered at the end of every autumn.  相似文献

Seabirds use several methods to transport food to their chicks; most species carry food in their stomachs or crops, but some terns and auks carry prey in their bills. Terns usually only carry one prey item at a time, limiting the rate at which they can provision their chicks, and restricting their effective foraging range. However, some terns do occasionally carry multiple prey, which should offer a selective advantage, but there are very few studies investigating the factors influencing the occurrence of multi-prey loading. We investigated the occurrence of multi-prey loads in provisioning Greater Crested Terns (Swift Tern) Thalasseus bergii bergii breeding on Robben Island, South Africa. Of 24 173 loads photographed, 1.3% comprised multiple prey items. Up to 11 fish were carried at once, but most multi-prey loads contained two Anchovies Engraulis encrasicolus, the most common prey item for this population of terns. Mixed species prey were recorded for the first time in a tern. Multi-prey loads occurred more frequently during mid- and late-provisioning, presumably because large chicks can cope with multiple prey, and have higher energetic requirements than small chicks. Mean standard length of Anchovies in multi-prey prey loads was less than Anchovies in single loads, possibly suggesting terns compensate for smaller prey sizes by bringing multiple prey back to their chick. The orientation of multiple Anchovies in a tern’s bill tended to be the same, suggesting that they were captured from polarised fish schools. At least some multi-prey loads were caught in a single dive.  相似文献

Ntiamoa-Baidu, Y. & Nuoh, A. A. 2000. The role of the Ghana coast in the annual cycle of migratory terns. Ostrich 71 (1 & 2): 183.

Data are presented on counts of migratory terns on the Ghana coast over a ten-year period, 1986–1996. Fourteen species of terns were recorded during the period. Influx of terns begins in late August, peaking in September/October, with the highest likelihood of tern occurrence on the Ghana coast recorded in August-November and April-May. Terns fed mostly offshore and used the coastal lagoons as roosting sites, although a few species e.g. Black Tern Chlidonias niger and Little Tern Sterna albifrons, foraged also on the lagoons. Two sites, Songor Lagoon and Densu Delta, regularly held over 50 % of the total count recorded for all sites. A comparison of the day-time counts with dusk roost counts indicate that the day time counts under-represent the total numbers of terns using the Ghana coast. Trends in the populations of the four most abundant tern species: Black Tern, Common Tern Sterna hirundo, Sandwich Tern S. sandvicensis and Royal Tern S. maxima, are analysed; and the implications for conservation of the species are discussed.  相似文献

Prey size was evaluated for seven passerine trans-Saharan migrant species at two spring stopover sites in Sardinia, Italy. The species considered were Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca, Spotted Flycatcher Muscicapa striata, Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus, Garden Warbler Sylvia borin, Whitethroat Sylvia communis, Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus and Wood Warbler Phylloscopus sibilatrix. The analysis was made for three prominent prey types: beetles (Coleoptera), ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and “flying prey” (wasps and bees [Hymenoptera, excluding ants] and flies, Diptera, pooled), The prey size distribution in the diets of some species was very similar to that caught in our insect traps, showing that our estimates of availability are, at least partially, relevant. On the whole, diets deviated from food available in a species consistent way. The size distributions of “flying prey” differed between the two sites but were almost constant in the birds' diets. In contrast, size distributions of available beetles and ants at the sites were similar but were different in the birds' diets. Different feeding behaviour of the birds, in terms of physiological constraints during migratory stopovers, is discussed. Paired species comparisons show that the diets of most species differ significantly in the distribution of the size classes of at least some prey types. The conclusions drawn from the comparisons of the size distributions of all prey items collected from a bird species in one season are very similar to the conclusions drawn from comparisons based on the presence/absence of a size class per faecal sample. We compared the similarities of diet with and without using information on prey size. With the exception of the Pied Flycatcher and the Redstart at one of the study sites, size information did not add to diet segregation. Certain size classes within prey types tended to be common in the diet of these migrant passerines. However, specialization on certain size classes within broad taxonomic categories was not evident.  相似文献

During January and February of 2002 and 2003, we studied the diet of the Antarctic Tern Sterna vittata gaini at two colonies in Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, by identifying the prey fed to chicks by breeders. The fish Notothenia coriiceps was the main prey in both seasons, followed by the myctophid Electrona antarctica, Antarctic krill Euphausia superba and gammarid amphipods. The contribution of fish to the diet increased as chicks grew older. Fish and amphipods were brought to chicks during the day, whereas adults brought Antarctic krill at sunrise and sunset. Both the duration of the feeding trips and the number of trips per foraging bout varied according to the type of prey caught. Preliminary information suggests that, among other causes, the foraging strategy is strongly influenced by the predation pressure of skuas on chicks. Results are compared with the only two previous study on the diet of the Antarctic Tern at the South Shetland Islands.  相似文献

We studied the impact of a wind farm (line of 25 small to medium sized turbines) on birds at the eastern port breakwater in Zeebrugge, Belgium, with special attention to the nearby breeding colony of Common Tern Sterna hirundo, Sandwich Tern Sterna sandvicensis and Little Tern Sterna albifrons. With the data of found collision fatalities under the wind turbines, and the correction factors for available search area, search efficiency and scavenging, we calculated that during the breeding seasons in 2004 and 2005, about 168 resp. 161 terns collided with the wind turbines located on the eastern port breakwater close to the breeding colony, mainly Common Terns and Sandwich Terns. The mean number of terns killed in 2004 and 2005 was 6.7 per turbine per year for the whole wind farm, and 11.2 resp. 10.8 per turbine per year for the line of 14 turbines on the sea-directed breakwater close to the breeding colony. The mean number of collision fatalities when including other species (mainly gulls) in 2004 and 2005 was 20.9 resp. 19.1 per turbine per year for the whole wind farm and 34.3 resp. 27.6 per turbine per year for 14 turbines on the sea-directed breakwater. The collision probability for Common Terns crossing the line of wind turbines amounted 0.110–0.118% for flights at rotor height and 0.007–0.030% for all flights. For Sandwich Tern this probability was 0.046–0.088% for flights at rotor height and 0.005–0.006% for all flights. The breeding terns were almost not disturbed by the wind turbines, but the relative large number of tern fatalities was determined as a significant negative impact on the breeding colony at the eastern port breakwater (additional mortality of 3.0–4.4% for Common Tern, 1.8–6.7% for Little Tern and 0.6–0.7% for Sandwich Tern). We recommend that there should be precautionary avoidance of constructing wind turbines close to any important breeding colony of terns or gulls, nor should artificial breeding sites be constructed near wind turbines, especially not within the frequent foraging flight paths.  相似文献

Stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N) and gut content analyses were used to investigate size‐related feeding habits of four reef fishes (the beaugregory Stegastes leucostictus, the french grunt Haemulon flavolineatum, the schoolmaster snapper Lutjanus apodus and the yellowtail snapper Ocyurus chrysurus) inhabiting an offshore (non‐estuarine) mangrove islet off Belize, Central America. Comparisons of isotopic niche space and Schoener diet similarity index suggested a low to moderate degree of niche overlap between fish size groups. The δ13C gradient between mangrove and seagrass prey as well as results of Bayesian mixing models revealed that sampled fishes relied mostly on seagrass prey items. Only small and large juveniles of the carnivorous species L. apodus derived a part of their diet from mangroves by targeting mangrove‐associated Grapsidae crabs and fish prey, respectively. Isotopic niche shifts were particularly obvious for carnivorous fishes that ingested larger prey items (Xanthidae crabs and fishes) during their ontogeny. The utilization of mangrove food resources is less than expected and depends on the ecology and life history of the fish species considered. This research highlights that mangrove‐derived carbon contributed relatively little to the diets of four fish taxa from an offshore mangrove islet.  相似文献

In the Province of Chubut (43°S–47°S), from 2001 to 2005 an on‐board observers program analyzed 18 903 fishing hauls captured at depths of 19–104 m. Sport fishing tournaments near Puerto Rawson, Chubut, were also monitored from 2004 to 2006. The aim was to document the southward expansion of five cartilaginous fish species and ten bony fish species caught in Central Patagonian waters (Argentina): Psammobatis extenta, Psammobatis bergi, Atlantoraja castelnaui, Sympterygia acuta, Torpedo puelcha, Selene setapinnis, Oncopterus darwini, Dules auriga, Mullus argentinae, Cynoscion guatucupa, Prionotus nudigula, Conger orbignyanus, Urophycis brasiliensis, Trachurus lathami, and Trichiurus lepturus. Reproductive populations of S. acuta, O. darwini and C. guatucupa were detected in the Engaño Bay area close to Puerto Rawson (43°10′S–43°19′S). The newly reported fishes pertain to warm‐temperate waters, where most of the species are native to the Argentinean Zoogeographic Province. One likely hypothesis explaining their occurrence in the area is the prevalence of higher water temperatures in recent times in the San Jorge Gulf and adjacent waters. Another likely hypothesis is the increase in sampling and catch efforts in Patagonian coastal areas and also improved capabilities in taxonomic recognition of the species.  相似文献

Walter, C. B., Cooper, J. &; Suter, W. 1987. Diet of Swift Tern chicks in the Saldanha Bay region, South Africa. Ostrich 58:49-53.

The diet of the Swift Tern Sterna bergii was investigated over a ten-year period off the west coast of South Africa by collecting regurgitations from chicks during ringing operations. A total of 1311 prey items of 25 identifiable species (20 of which were fish) was collected. Fish formed 86% of all the prey items. Other prey species included cephalopods, crustaceans and insects. 60% by number of prey taken consisted of pelagic shoaling fish, of which Cape Anchovy Engraulis japonicus occurred most frequently and was the most abundant prey species in seven of the nine years in which samples were collected. Weekly collections in 1984 confirmed that pelagic shoaling fish, in particular Cape Anchovy, were the most abundant prey taken during the chick-rearing period. Prey size varied from 7 to 138 mm in length and from 0,l to 30,0 g in mass.  相似文献

Synopsis This paper describes a study performed in the Gulf of Aqaba on food selectivity and hunting behaviour of three species of sympatric fish from the genusCephalopholis. These fishes occur in the shallow-water coral habitats of the Red Sea and feed on fishes and invertebrates. Of these,C. argus andC. miniata prefer selected fish species (95 and 86% of their diet respectively), whereasC. hemistiktos consumes more invertebrates (36%) and is less selective with respect to fish species. All three species employ various techniques to catch their prey and in situations where their elected food is absent they readily switch to substitute prey species.  相似文献

This study quantifies the occurrence of gelatinous zooplankton in the stomach contents of fishes from the southwest Atlantic Ocean (33°–55°S). More than 69,000 fish stomachs belonging to 107 species were examined. A total of 39 fishes were documented as consumers of gelatinous zooplankton, 23 of which were newly discovered. Three gelatinous organism consumption categories are recognized: (1) very frequent consumers (10 species, six of which were exclusive); frequent consumers (five species); and occasional consumers (26 species). Three types of gelatinous prey (ctenophores, salps and medusae) were found in the stomach contents of fishes. Ctenophores were consumed at high levels across almost the entire continental shelves of Argentina and Uruguay. Salps were frequent prey on the slope and southern shelf. In contrast, medusae were consumed in coastal areas, slopes and the southern shelf. Classification methods (group average sorting of the Bray–Curtis similarity measures based on log (X?+?1)-transformed percentage data) determined six areas where fishes predated on gelatinous organisms. SIMPER (similarity percentages) analysis determined which fishes contributed more to the consumption of gelatinous organisms. Results revealed that two fish species (Stromateus brasiliensis and Squalus acanthias) had high gelatinous zooplankton predation rates throughout the entire study area, while another six species (Patagonotothen ramsayi, Helicolenus dactylopterus lahillei, Macrourus holotrachys, Merluccius hubbsi, Schroederichthys bivius, and Macruronus magellanicus), while widely distributed, seemed to have specific areas where consumption occurred. This study not only provides new knowledge about the importance of gelatinous zooplankton in the diet of numerous fishes, but might also be valuable for planning and managing local fisheries.  相似文献

This paper presents data from a twelve-year (1986–98) monitoring of waterbird populations at Muni Lagoon, and discusses the ornithological importance of the lagoon and trends in the use of the site by waterbirds. The small brackish lagoon forms part of the Muni-Pomadze Ramsar site situated on the Ghana coast. A total of 48 species of waterbirds were recorded at the site comprising of 29 species of waders, eight species of terns, two species of gulls, seven species of herons and egrets, one species each of duck and cormorant. The most abundant waterbirds species recorded on the site were the Curlew Sandpiper, Ringed Plover, Greenshank, Black-winged Stilt, Common Tern, Black Tern, Royal Tern and the Sandwich Tern. Three species of waders, Black-winged Stilt, Pratincole and Little Tern were observed to breed at the site. The highest numbers of waterbirds occurred on the site in the period September to March. The site remains an internationally important wetland site by virtue of supporting internationally important numbers of four species of terns: Royal Tern, Sandwich Tern, Common Tern and Black Tern. The value of Muni lies more in its use as a feeding/staging site for migrating waders that spend the non-breeding season in Ghana or pass through to winter further south, and as a roosting site for terns which feed mainly at sea. The use of the site by waterbirds has increased by some 400% between 1986 and 1998. This is attributed to improved prey availability resulting from the opening of the lagoon into the sea during the 1994 floods, and reduced disturbance of feeding and roosting birds. This would imply that the value of the site as waterbird habitat could improve considerably with appropriate habitat management interventions and continued protection.  相似文献

The diets of the most conspicuous reef‐fish species from northern Patagonia, the carnivorous species Pseudopercis semifasciata, Acanthistius patachonicus, Pinguipes brasilianus and Sebastes oculatus were studied. Pinguipes brasilianus had the narrowest diet and most specialized feeding strategy, preying mostly on reef‐dwelling organisms such as sea urchins, limpets, bivalves, crabs and polychaetes. The diet of A. patachonicus was characterized by the presence of reef and soft‐bottom benthic organisms, mainly polychaetes, crabs and fishes. Pseudopercis semifasciata showed the broadest spectrum of prey items, preying upon reef, soft‐bottom and transient organism (mainly fishes, cephalopods and crabs). All S. oculatus guts were empty, but stable‐isotope analyses suggested that this species consumed small fishes and crabs. In general, P. brasilianus depended on local prey populations and ate different reef‐dwelling prey than the other species. Pseudopercis semifasciata, A. patachonicus and probably S. oculatus, however, had overlapping trophic niches and consumed resources from adjacent environments. The latter probably reduces the importance of food as a limiting resource for these reef‐fish populations, facilitating their coexistence in spite of their high trophic overlap.  相似文献

Bego, G. W. 1973. The feeding habits of the Whitewinged Black Tern on Lake Kariba. Ostrich 44: 149–153.

The stomach contents of 33 Whitewinged Black Terns were examined over the period 26 August 1971 to 6 January 1972. The most important single food item was the sardine, Limnothrissa miodon. This sheds new light on the habits of this fish. The terns fed primarily during calm weather. Sardines are caught by hovering and diving. Fishes of the genera Haplochromis and Synodonlis, also appeared in the stomach contents. Terns taken from marginal localities appear not to feed on fish. Of the insects eaten Odonata are the most important aquatic source of food, while many terrestrial insects are eaten (Orthoptera, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Isoptera). Such insects could have been found drifting on mats of Salvinia on which the terns rest, otherwise insects are either hawked or skimmed from the surface of the water.  相似文献

The diet of seven fish species from the Río de la Plata was studied to evaluate their behaviour as predators on the invasive bivalves Corbicula fluminea and Limnoperna fortunei. It was concluded that the teleosts Pterodoras granulosus, Pimelodus maculatus, Paraloricaria vetula and Ricola macrops prey upon C. fluminea, whilst Leporinus obtusidens, Rhinodoras dorbignyi and Brochiloricaria chauliodon feed on Lim. fortunei. These fish species had altered their diets to consume large amounts of these molluscs. Three of the fishes recorded here were previously unknown to feed on molluscs. The fishes studied here prey upon molluscs that ingest trace metals with their food items, thus monitoring the situation is suggested as several of these fish species are caught for human consumption.  相似文献

I studied the feeding behavior and diet of the carangid jack Caranx latus in a subtropical reef at Búzios Island on the southeastern Brazilian coast. Caranx latus foraged alone or in small groups of up to three individuals during daytime employing two main feeding styles: searching for prey while swimming in mid-water and following individuals of other fish species which disturbed the substrate while foraging among the rocks. The labrid wrasse Bodianus rufus was the main fish species followed by the jack. The jack feeds on crustaceans and fishes some of which are benthic rocky bottom dwellers and are caught during following. The behavioral flexibility of C. latus enables this fish to consume both crustaceans from the water column and benthic rocky dweller fishes. There is little dietary overlap between C. latus and the followed B. rufus. The interspecific feeding associations could be regarded as advantageous for C. latus allowing access to a broader range of prey categories and increasing the food intake through the consumption of large benthic fish prey  相似文献

Black seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli, and Japanese seaperch, Lateolabrax japonicus, are important commercial species in the coastal waters of western Pacific Ocean, including Japan, Korea and China. In Hong Kong, larvae and juveniles of these two species occur in bays and estuaries during late winter and spring. This study reports on the ontogenetic changes in food habits in larvae and juveniles of these species in an artificial rocky shore area. Copepods and cladocerans were the most numerous food items for black seabream. There was a shift to larger and benthic prey as the fishes grew. Japanese seaperch <2.1cm fed predominantly on copepods and cladocerans, while larger prey were added as fish size increased. Japanese seaperch >6.0cm were piscivorous. Maximum prey width increased with fish standard length and mouth gape width in both species. Overall, black seabream showed greater diet breadth than did Japanese seaperch. In black seabream, diet breadth increased with fish size. In Japanese seaperch, diet breadth increased with size for fishes <4.0cm, then decreased as the fishes became piscivorous. Prey selectivity in black seabream was determined using information on prey availability in plankton samples. In general, preference was stronger for cypris larvae, Penilia avirostris and decapod larvae than for copepods and podonids. In recent years, overfishing and environmental degradation have led to the decline of fish populations in Tolo Harbour. Absence of fishes with empty gut indicates that inner Tolo Harbour is still an important nursery area for these two commercial species.  相似文献

The most common gurnard species in the Gulf of Gabes (Tunisia) are Chelidonichthys lastoviza and C. obscurus. These two species were collected by trawl nets between February 2000 and July 2002 at depths ranging from 80 to 150 meters. In the laboratory the stomach contents were examined for diet assessment and to determine diet variation in relation to fish size, season and sex. The importance of different prey items was analysed utilising several feeding indexes, while diet overlap was tested using Schoener's index and the null model test. The two species showed similar diets, with the same qualitative and quantitative composition. Basic food consisted of crustaceans, mostly mysids and decapods. For Chelidonichthys lastoviza:Gastrosaccus sp. (F = 48.57%), Anchialina agilis (F = 30.57%) and Sicyonia carinata (F = 21.71%); for Chelidonichthys obscurus:Gastrosaccus sp. (F = 80.95%), A. agilis (F = 55.41%) and Pontocaris lacazei (F = 15.15%). A change in food composition based on fish size was observed in both species: mysids more frequently in the diet of small specimens, and decapods in the largest fishes. Seasonal variation in their diet was also recorded. The two fishes showed a significantly higher number of empty stomachs in late autumn and winter. Regardless of species and size class, a biologically significant diet overlap was observed between C. lastoviza and C. obscurus. This result may indicate a lack of competition among triglid species size‐class combinations or strong competition that has not yet led to resource portioning.  相似文献
