All‐solid‐state batteries are expected to enable batteries with high energy density with the use of lithium metal anodes. Although solid electrolytes are believed to be mechanically strong enough to prevent lithium dendrites from propagating, various reports today still show cell failure due to lithium dendrit growth at room temperature. While cell parameters such as current density, electrolyte porosity, and interfacial properties have been investigated, mechanical properties of lithium metal and the role of applied stack pressure on the shorting behavior are still poorly understood. Here, failure mechanisms of lithium metal are investigated in all‐solid‐state batteries as a function of stack pressure, and in situ characterization of the interfacial and morphological properties of the buried lithium is conducted in solid electrolytes. It is found that a low stack pressure of 5 MPa allows reliable plating and stripping in a lithium symmetric cell for more than 1000 h, and a Li | Li6PS5Cl | LiNi0.80Co0.15Al0.05O2 full cell, plating more than 4 µm of lithium per charge, is able to cycle over 200 cycles at room temperature. These results suggest the possibility of enabling the lithium metal anode in all‐solid‐state batteries at reasonable stack pressures.  相似文献

A facile and scalable approach is reported to stabilize the lithium‐metal anode by regulating the Li nucleation and deposition kinetics with laser‐induced graphene (LIG). By processing polyimide (PI) films on copper foils with a laser, a 3D‐hierarchical composite material is constructed, consisting of a highly conductive copper substrate, a pillared array of flexible PI, and most importantly, porous LIG on the walls of the PI pillars. The high number of defects and heteroatoms present in LIG significantly lowers the Li nucleation barrier compared to the copper foil. An overpotential‐free Li nucleation process is identified at current densities lower than 0.2 mA cm?2. Theoretical computations reveal that the defects serve as nucleation centers during the heterogeneous nucleation of lithium. By adopting such composites, ultrastable lithium‐metal anodes are obtained with high Coulombic efficiencies of ≈99%. Full lithium‐metal cells based on LiFePO4 cathodes with a material loading of ≈15 mg cm?2 and a negative/positive ratio of 5/1 could be cycled over 250 times with a capacity loss of less than 10%. The current work highlights the importance of nucleation kinetics on the stability of metallic anodes and demonstrates a practical method toward long lasting Li‐metal batteries.  相似文献

The charge transfer kinetics between a lithium metal electrode and an inorganic solid electrolyte is of key interest to assess the rate capability of future lithium metal solid state batteries. In an in situ microelectrode study run in a scanning electron microscope, it is demonstrated that—contrary to the prevailing opinion—the intrinsic charge transfer resistance of the Li|Li6.25Al0.25La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) interface is in the order of 10?1 Ω cm2 and thus negligibly small. The corresponding high exchange current density in combination with the single ion transport mechanism (t+ ≈ 1) of the inorganic solid electrolyte enables extremely fast plating kinetics without the occurrence of transport limitations. Local plating rates in the range of several A cm?2 are demonstrated at defect free and chemically clean Li|LLZO interfaces. Practically achievable current densities are limited by lateral growth of lithium along the surface as well as electro‐chemo‐mechanical‐induced fracture of the solid electrolyte. In combination with the lithium vacancy diffusion limitation during electrodissolution, these morphological instabilities are identified as the key fundamental limitations of the lithium metal electrode for solid‐state batteries with inorganic solid electrolytes.  相似文献

Although Li–O2 batteries are promising next‐generation energy storage systems with superior theoretical capacities, they have a serious limitation regarding the large overpotential upon charging that results from the low conductivity of the discharge product. Thus, various redox mediators (RMs) have been widely studied to reduce the overpotential in the charging process, which should promote the oxidation of Li2O2. However, RMs degrade the Li metal anode through a parasitic reaction between the RM and the Li metal, and a solution for this phenomenon is necessary. In this study, an effective method is proposed to prevent the migration of the RM toward the anode side of the lithium using a separator that is modified with a negatively charged polymer. When DMPZ (5,10‐dihydro‐5,10‐dimethylphenazine) is used as an RM, it is found that the modified separator suppresses the migration of DMPZ toward the counter electrode of the Li metal anode. This is investigated by a visual redox couple diffusion test, a morphological investigation, and an X‐ray diffraction study. This advanced separator effectively maximizes the catalytic activity of the redox mediator. Li–O2 batteries using both a highly concentrated DMPZ and the modified separator exhibit improved performance and maintained 90% round‐trip efficiency up to the 20th cycle.  相似文献

Lithium (Li) metal has been extensively investigated as an anode for rechargeable battery applications due to its ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity and the lowest redox potential. However, significant challenges including dendrite growth and low Coulombic efficiency are still hindering the practical applications of rechargeable Li metal batteries. It is demonstrated that long‐term cycling of Li metal batteries can be realized by the formation of a transient high‐concentration electrolyte layer near the surface of Li metal anode during high rate discharge process. The highly concentrated Li+ ions in this transient layer will immediately be solvated by the available solvent molecules and facilitate the formation of a stable and flexible solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer composed of a poly(ethylene carbonate) framework integrated with other organic/inorganic lithium salts. This SEI layer largely suppresses the corrosion of Li metal anode attacked by free organic solvents and enables the long‐term operation of Li metal batteries. The fundamental findings in this work provide a new direction for the development of Li metal batteries that could be operated at high current densities for a wide range of applications.  相似文献

The instability of lithium (Li) metal anodes due to dendritic growth and low Coulombic efficiency (CE) hinders the practical application of high‐energy‐density Li metal batteries. Here, the systematic studies of improving the stability of Li metal anodes and the electrochemical performance of Li metal batteries through the addition of combinational additives and the optimization of solvent compositions in dual‐salt/carbonate electrolytes are reported. A dendrite‐free and high CE of 98.1% for Li metal anode is achieved. The well‐protected Li metal anode and the excellent cyclability and rate capability of the 4‐V Li metal batteries are obtained. This is attributed to the formation of a robust, denser, more polymeric, and higher ionic conductive surface film on the Li metal anode via the electrochemical reductive decompositions of the electrolyte components and the ring‐opening polymerization of additives and cyclic carbonate solvents. The key findings of this work indicate that the optimization of solvent compositions and the manipulation of additives are facile and effective ways to enhance the performances of Li metal batteries.  相似文献

Solid‐state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) may become one of the high‐energy density storage devices for the next generation of electric vehicles. High safety and energy density can be achieved by utilizing solid electrolytes and Li metal anodes. Therefore, developing cathode materials which can match with Li metal anode efficiently is indispensable. In SSLMBs, Li metal anodes can afford the majority of active lithium ions, then lithium‐depleted cathode materials can be a competitive candidate to achieve high gravimetric energy density as well as save lithium resources. Li0.33MnO2 lithium‐depleted material is chosen, which also has the advantages of low synthesis temperature and low cost (cobalt‐free). Notably, solid‐state electrolyte can greatly alleviate the problem of manganese dissolution in the electrolyte, which is beneficial to improve the cycling stability of the battery. Thus, SSLMBs enable practical applications of lithium‐depleted cathode materials.  相似文献

Lithium metal anodes are expected to drive practical applications that require high energy‐density storage. However, the direct use of metallic lithium causes safety concerns, low rate capabilities, and poor cycling performance due to unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and undesired lithium dendrite growth. To address these issues, a radio frequency sputtered graphite‐SiO2 ultrathin bilayer on a Li metal chips is demonstrated, for the first time, as an effective SEI layer. This leads to a dendrite free uniform Li deposition to achieve a stable voltage profile and outstanding long hours plating/stripping compared to the bare Li. Compared to a bare Li anode, the graphite‐SiO2 bilayer modified Li anode coupled with lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide cathode (NMC111) and lithium titanate shows improved capacity retention, higher capacity at higher rates, longer cycling stability, and lower voltage hysteresis. Graphite acts as an electrical bridge between the plated Li and Li electrode, which lowers the impedance and buffers the volume expansion during Li plating/stripping. Adding an ultrathin SiO2 layer facilitates Li‐ion diffusion and lithiation/delithiation, provides higher electrolyte affinity, higher chemical stability, and higher Young's modulus to suppress the Li dendrite growth.  相似文献

Lithium metal as an ultimate anode material of future rechargeable batteries may furnish the highest energy density for its pairing cathode, although preventing the growth of lithium dendrites in liquid electrolytes is a major challenge. This work reports that stable lithium metal anodes can be achieved by charging with high‐frequency sinusoidal ripple current generated by rotating triboelectric nanogenerators (R‐TENGs). Compared with constant DC current charging, sinusoidal ripple current charging by R‐TENG improves the uniformity of lithium deposition during cycling test. Consequently, symmetric Li/Li cells exhibit lower overpotential and better cycling stability. In addition, full cells assembled with lithium metal anodes and LiFePO4 cathodes show considerably improved capacity retention when charged by R‐TENG's sinusoidal ripple current (99.5%) compared to constant current (78.7%) after 200 cycles. The charging strategy device in this work provides a promising direction toward improving the cycle life of Li metal batteries. In addition, the combination of R‐TENGs with Li metal batteries offers an encouraging solution for achieving stable energy supply in self‐powered systems.  相似文献

Lithium‐sulfur batteries offer high energy density, but their practical utility is plagued by the fast decay of lithium‐metal anode upon cycling. To date, a fundamental understanding of the degradation mechanisms of lithium‐metal anode is lacking. It is shown that (i) by employing a specifically designed electrolyte, the lithium‐metal anode degradation can be significantly reduced, resulting in a superior, high‐rate battery performance and (ii) by combining advanced, 3D chemical analysis with X‐ray diffraction, the properties of the lithium‐metal anode can be effectively monitored as a function of cycling, which is critical in understanding its degradation mechanisms. These findings suggest that the crystallinity of the impurity phases formed in the lithium‐metal anode via chemical reactions with the electrolyte is the dominant degradation factor. It is shown both experimentally and by computational modeling that by employing electrolyte additives containing metal ions that have lower reactivity with sulfur than lithium (e.g., copper, silver, and gold), the crystallinity of the impurity phases can be significantly reduced, resulting in a stable lithium‐metal anode. A pathway to develop a practical, affordable, environmentally compatible, rechargeable Li‐S battery system is offered, and insights to develop other high‐energy‐density battery systems based on the high‐capacity lithium‐metal anode are provided.  相似文献

Securing the chemical and physical stabilities of electrode/solid‐electrolyte interfaces is crucial for the use of solid electrolytes in all‐solid‐state batteries. Directly probing these interfaces during electrochemical reactions would significantly enrich the mechanistic understanding and inspire potential solutions for their regulation. Herein, the electrochemistry of the lithium/Li7La3Zr2O12‐electrolyte interface is elucidated by probing lithium deposition through the electrolyte in an anode‐free solid‐state battery in real time. Lithium plating is strongly affected by the geometry of the garnet‐type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) surface, where nonuniform/filamentary growth is triggered particularly at morphological defects. More importantly, lithium‐growth behavior significantly changes when the LLZO surface is modified with an artificial interlayer to produce regulated lithium depositions. It is shown that lithium‐growth kinetics critically depend on the nature of the interlayer species, leading to distinct lithium‐deposition morphologies. Subsequently, the dynamic role of the interlayer in battery operation is discussed as a buffer and seed layer for lithium redistribution and precipitation, respectively, in tailoring lithium deposition. These findings broaden the understanding of the electrochemical lithium‐plating process at the solid‐electrolyte/lithium interface, highlight the importance of exploring various interlayers as a new avenue for regulating the lithium‐metal anode, and also offer insight into the nature of lithium growth in anode‐free solid‐state batteries.  相似文献

There is a growing concern about the cyclability and safety, in particular, of the high‐energy density lithium–metal batteries. This concern is even greater for Li–O2 batteries because O2 that is transported from the cathode to the anode compartment, can exacerbate side reactions and dendrite growth of the lithium metal anode. The key to solving this dilemma lays in tailoring the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed on the lithium metal anode in Li–O2 batteries. Here it is reported that a new electrolyte, formed from LiFSI as the salt and a mixture of tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether and polymeric ionic liquid of P[C5O2NMA,11]FSI as the solvent, can produce a stable electrode (both cathode and anode)|electrolyte interface in Li–O2 batteries. Specifically, this new electrolyte, when in contact with lithium metal anodes, has the ability to produce a uniform SEI with high ionic conductivity for Li+ transport and desired mechanical property for suppression of dendritic lithium growth. Moreover, the electrolyte possesses a high oxidation tolerance that is very beneficial to the oxygen electrochemistry on the cathode of Li–O2 batteries. As a result, enhanced reversibility and cycle life are realized for the resultant Li–O2 batteries.  相似文献

The low Coulombic efficiency and serious security issues of lithium (Li) metal anode caused by uncontrollable Li dendrite growth have permanently prevented its practical application. A novel SiO2 hollow nanosphere‐based composite solid electrolyte (SiSE) for Li metal batteries is reported. This hierarchical electrolyte is fabricated via in situ polymerizing the tripropylene gycol diacrylate (TPGDA) monomer in the presence of liquid electrolyte, which is absorbed in a SiO2 hollow nanosphere layer. The polymerized TPGDA framework keeps the prepared SiSE in a quasi‐solid state without safety risks caused by electrolyte leakage, meanwhile the SiO2 layer not only acts as a mechanics‐strong separator but also provides the SiSE with high room‐temperature ionic conductivity (1.74 × 10?3 S cm?1) due to the high pore volume (1.49 cm3 g?1) and large liquid electrolyte uptake of SiO2 hollow nanospheres. When the SiSE is in situ fabricated on the cathode and applied to LiFePO4/SiSE/Li batteries, the obtained cells show a significant improvement in cycling stability, mainly attributed to the stable electrode/electrolyte interface and remarkable suppression for Li dendrite growth by the SiSE. This work can extend the application of hollow nanooxide and enable a safe, efficient operation of Li anode in next generation energy storage systems.  相似文献

Lithium metal is the most promising anode material for next‐generation batteries, owing to its high theoretical specific capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, the practical application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) has been plagued by the issues of uncontrollable lithium deposition. The multifunctional nanostructured anode can modulate the initial nucleation process of lithium before the extension of dendrites. By combing the theoretical design and experimental validation, a novel nucleation strategy is developed by introducing sulfur (S) to graphene. Through first‐principles simulations, it is found that S atom doping can improve the Li adsorption ability on a large area around the S doping positions. Consequently, S‐doped graphene with five lithiophilic sites rather than a single atomic site can serve as the pristine nucleation area, reducing the uneven Li deposition and improving the electrochemical performance. Modifying Li metal anodes by S‐doped graphene enables an ultralow overpotential of 5.5 mV, a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99% over more than 180 cycles at a current density of 0.5 mA cm?2 for 1.0 mAh cm?2, and a high areal capacity of 3 mAh cm?2. This work sheds new light on the rational design of nucleation area materials for dendrite‐free LMB.  相似文献

Uncontrollable dendrite growth hinders the direct use of a lithium metal anode in batteries, even though it has the highest energy density of all anode materials. Achieving uniform lithium deposition is the key to solving this problem, but it is hard to be realized on a planar electrode surface. In this study, a thin lithiophilic layer consisting of vertically aligned CuO nanosheets directly grown on a planar Cu current collector is prepared by a simple wet chemical reaction. The lithiophilic nature of the CuO nanosheets reduces the polarization of the electrode, ensuring uniform Li nucleation and continuous smooth Li plating, which is difficult to realize on the normally used lithiophobic Cu current collector surface. The integration of the grown CuO arrays and the Cu current collector guarantees good electron transfer, and moreover, the vertically aligned channels between the CuO nanosheets guarantee fast ion diffusion and reduce the local current density. As a result, a high Columbic efficiency of 94% for 180 cycles at a current density of 1 mA cm?2 and a prolonged lifespan of a symmetrical cell (700 h at 0.5 mA cm?2) can be easily achieved, showing a simple but effective way to realize Li metal‐based anode stabilization.  相似文献

To reconcile the energy storage ability and operational safety of lithium metal batteries (LMBs), a transformation from a liquid to a solid‐state system is required. However, Li volume variation, poor interfacial contact, and high operation temperatures hinder its practical applications. To address the above issues, here, an integral structure design for solid‐state LMBs is shown, in which a Li‐preinfused 3D carbon fiber (Li/CF) anode is ionically connected to a cathode via an autopolymerized gel electrolyte. The gel electrolyte helps to encapsulate the liquid electrolyte within the Li/CF anode and the cathode to improve the interfacial contact. The gel also serves as a reservoir that balances the liquid electrolyte supply during repeated Li stripping/plating process. As a result, the symmetrical cells and full cells with Li/CF electrodes exhibit improved cycling stability and effective suppression of dendrites at ambient temperature. This work facilitates the realization of solid‐state LMBs with high energy and high safety.  相似文献

Lithium‐air (Li‐air) batteries have become attractive because of their extremely high theoretical energy density. However, conventional Li‐air cells operating with non‐aqueous electrolytes suffer from poor cycle life and low practical energy density due to the clogging of the porous air cathode by insoluble discharge products, contamination of the organic electrolyte and lithium metal anode by moist air, and decomposition of the electrolyte during cycling. These difficulties may be overcome by adopting a cell configuration that consists of a lithium‐metal anode protected from air by a Li+‐ion solid electrolyte and an air electrode in an aqueous catholyte. In this type of configuration, a Li+‐ion conducting “buffer” layer between the lithium‐metal anode and the solid electrolyte is often necessary due to the instability of many solid electrolytes in contact with lithium metal. Based on the type of buffer layer, two different battery configurations are possible: “hybrid” Li‐air batteries and “aqueous” Li‐air batteries. The hybrid and aqueous Li‐air batteries utilize the same battery chemistry and face similar challenges that limit the cell performance. Here, an overview of recent developments in hybrid and aqueous Li‐air batteries is provided and the factors that influence their performance and impede their practical applications, followed by future directions are discussed.  相似文献

The application of lithium (Li) metal anodes in rechargeable batteries is primarily restricted by Li dendrite growth on the metal's surface, which leads to shortened cycle life and safety concerns. Herein, well‐spaced nanotubes with ultrauniform surface curvature are introduced as a Li metal anode structure. The ultrauniform nanotubular surface generates uniform local electric fields that evenly attract Li‐ions to the surface, thereby inducing even current density distribution. Moreover, the well‐defined nanotube spacing offers Li diffusion pathways to the electroactive areas as well as the confined spaces to host deposited Li. These structural attributes create a unique electrodeposition manner; i.e., Li metal homogenously deposits on the nanotubular wall, causing each Li nanotube to grow in circumference without obvious sign of dendritic formation. Thus, the full‐cell battery with the spaced Li nanotubes exhibits a high specific capacity of 132 mA h g?1 at 1 C and an excellent coulombic efficiency of ≈99.85% over 400 cycles.  相似文献

The insulating nature of sulfur, polysulfide shuttle effect, and lithium‐metal deterioration cause a decrease in practical energy density and fast capacity fade in lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) batteries. This study presents an integrated strategy for the development of hybrid Li‐S batteries based on a gel sulfur cathode, a solid electrolyte, and a protective anolyte composed of a highly concentrated salt electrolyte containing mixed additives. The dense solid electrolyte completely blocks polysulfide diffusion, and also makes it possible to investigate the cathode and anode independently. This gel cathode effectively traps the polysulfide active material while maintaining a low electrolyte to sulfur ratio of 5.2 mL g?1. The anolyte effectively protects the Li metal and suppresses the consumption of liquid electrolyte, enabling stable long‐term cycling for over 700 h in Li symmetric cells. This advanced design can simultaneously suppress the polysulfide shuttle, protect Li metal, and reduce the liquid electrolyte usage. The assembled hybrid batteries exhibit remarkably stable cycling performance over 300 cycles with high capacity. Finally, surface‐sensitive techniques are carried out to directly visualize and probe the interphase formed on the surface of the Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) pellet, which may help stabilize the solid–liquid interface.  相似文献

Lithium metal is an ultimate anode material to provide the highest energy density for a given cathode by providing a higher capacity and cell voltage. However, lithium is not used as the anode in commercial lithium‐ion batteries because electrochemical dendrite formation and growth during charge can induce a cell short circuit that ignites the flammable liquid electrolyte. Plating of lithium through a bed of Li3N particles is shown to transform dendrite growth into a 3D lithium network formed by wetting the particle surfaces; plating through a Li3N particle is without dendrite nucleation. The Li3N particles create a higher overpotential during Li deposition than that with dendrite growth in galvanostatic charge/discharge tests. The characteristic overpotential increase is correlated with the morphological changes and a more isotropic growth behavior. The Li3N‐modified Li electrode shows a stable cycling performance at 0.5 and 1.0 mA cm?2 for more than 100 cycles. The origin of the bonding responsible for wetting of the Li3N particles by lithium and for plating through a Li3N particle is discussed.  相似文献
