Bunodera sacculata (Trematoda: Allocreadiidae) infected 65 (54%) of 120 yellow perch collected in 1997 and 40 (50%) of 80 perch from Silver Creek in 1998. and 17 (30%) of 56 perch in 2000 from Silver Lake in lower Michigan. Gravid B. sacculata occurred in the pyloric ceca and anterior intestine. There were differences in monthly trends (July through August) in prevalences, mean intensities, and mean abundances of B. sacculata in Silver Creek between 1997 and 1998. The mean intensity +/- SD (8.2 +/- 9.1) and mean abundance (4.1 +/- 7.8) of B. sacculata were significantly higher in 1998 than in 1997 and 2000. An additional 20 perch (0+ in age) collected from the creek in July 1998 were all infected and had the highest mean intensity of 21.3 +/- 14.1.  相似文献

A total of 178 channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), 162 freshwater drum (Aplodinotus grunniens), 60 smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) and 2,488 yellow perch (Perca flavescens) were examined for larval Eustrongylides tubifex (Nitzsch 1819) J?gerskiold 1909 during 1973 and 1974. Older, large fish exhibited higher prevalence, larger mean numbers of larvae in infected fish, larger mean numbers of larvae in all fish examined, and wider range of intensity of infection. Infections were most extensive in yellow perch. The majority of larvae were removed from mesenteric cysts. Under experimental conditions, larvae migrated from cysts through the body wall when environmental temperatures reached or exceeded 40 C. Fourth-stage larvae removed from yellow perch successfully reinfected a variety of poikilothermous experimental hosts. Both young-of-the-year and I+ age/size class yellow perch exhibited increasing monthly larval worm burdens during portions of the sampling period. Older (II+) age/size class yellow perch did not exhibit significantly increasing worm burdens. No significant differences were noted in numbers of male and female larvae or in worm burdens in male and female yellow perch.  相似文献

Larval golden perch, Macquaria ambigua , and silver perch, Bidyanus bidyanus , were exposed to light gradients in wavebands centred on 400, 496, 601 and 695 nm at nominal quantum irradiance values of 0–1, 1–0 and 10 μmol m−2 s−l. Silver perch larvae displayed stronger phototactic behaviour than golden perch, and both species were most responsive to light in the 601 nm waveband. The intensity of phototactic responses in both species was greater at higher irradiance levels. Enhanced responsiveness to longer wavelengths reflects possible adaptations to life in turbid habitats where the underwater light field is dominated by yellow/orange wavebands.
At night, traps fitted with 12 h yellow lightsticks attracted more golden perch larvae than traps with blue, green, orange, red or no lightstick. The efficacy of yellow lightsticks may be due to yellow/orange wavebands not being attenuated under water as rapidly as blue or red wavebands. Yellow lightsticks also emit a greater intensity of light over a longer time than other colours tested, which may have increased the effectiveness of yellow traps. Despite Egusa's earlier warning of the damage that the parasitic nematode Anguillicola crassus could inflict on the European eel Anguilla anguilla, its introduction in Europe was a fact in the early 1980s. Based on an elaborate dataset on Anguillicola crassus infection of 11 river catchments, this paper presents the results of a detailed study on the dispersal of the parasite in Flanders, Belgium, and the host-parasite relationship. In addition, data from 1986 and 1997 are used for comparative purposes, providing a perspective on the temporal infection pattern over 15 yr. The presence of A. crassus in Flanders was first discovered in 1985; 2 yr later a survey revealed a prevalence of 34.1% and a mean infection intensity of 5.5, based on adult nematodes only, and 10 yr later the parasite was present at all 11 sites sampled. Prevalence had increased to 62.5 % but the mean infection intensity had decreased to 3.9 adults per infected eel. Finally, in the year 2000, a third study revealed that A. crassus was present in 139 of 140 investigated sites; a further increase in prevalence to 68.7% and a decrease in mean infection intensity to 3.4 adults per infected eel was observed. When all larval stages were taken into account, mean prevalence amounted to 88.1% and mean intensity to 5.5 adults. The high infection level in Flanders is thought to be the result of restocking with glass eel and yellow eel, both of which are susceptible to A. crassus. The general infection parameters were similar in all 11 river catchments. It is possible that in Flanders both prevalence and mean infection intensity are stabilizing due to density-dependent regulation of the parasite infrapopulation. Fibrotic swimbladder walls were observed, mainly in large eels, and 20% of the total number of nematodes consisted of encapsulated larvae in the surveys of 1997 and 2000; 8 cases of swimbladder regeneration were observed.  相似文献

One hundred five spotted owls (Strix occidentalis) from seven populations and three subspecies were examined for hematozoa. Haemoproteus noctuae, H. syrnii, Leucocytozoon ziemanni, Trypanosoma avium, Atoxoplasma sp. and unidentified microfilariae were recorded. All northern (S. occidentalis caurina), California (S. occidentalis occidentalis) and Mexican (S. occidentalis lucida) spotted owls were infected with at least one hematozoan; 79% had multiple infections. Twenty-two percent of the owls were infected with as many as four species of parasites. There were significant differences in the prevalence of these species of parasites occurring among the five populations of northern and California spotted owls sampled in California. Haemoproteus noctuae, H. syrnii and Atoxoplasma sp. represented new host records for this host species.  相似文献

1. When available, Daphnia spp. are often preferred by age‐0 yellow perch and bluegill sunfish because of energetic profitability. We hypothesised that predation by age‐0 yellow perch could lead to a midsummer decline (MSD) of Daphnia spp. and that priority effects may favour yellow perch because they hatch before bluegill, allowing them to capitalise on Daphnia spp. prior to bluegill emergence. 2. Data were collected from 2004 to 2010 in Pelican Lake, Nebraska, U.S.A. The lake experienced a prolonged MSD in all but 1 year (2005), generally occurring within the first 2 weeks of June except in 2008 and 2010 when it occurred at the end of June. MSD timing is not solely related to seasonal patterns of age‐0 yellow perch consumption. Nevertheless, when Daphnia spp. biomass was low during 2004 and 2006–2010 (<4 mg wet weight L?1), predation by age‐0 yellow perch seems to have suppressed Daphnia spp. biomass (i.e. <1.0 mg wet weight L?1). The exception was 2005 when age‐0 yellow perch were absent. 3. Growth of age‐0 bluegill was significantly faster in 2005, when Daphnia spp. were available in greater densities (>4 mg wet weight L?1) compared with the other years (<0.2 mg wet weight L?1). 4. We conclude that age‐0 yellow perch are capable of reducing Daphnia biomass prior to the arrival of age‐0 bluegill, ultimately slowing bluegill growth. Thus, priority effects favour age‐0 yellow perch when competing with age‐0 bluegill for Daphnia. However, these effects may be minimised if there is a shorter time between hatching of the two species, higher Daphnia spp. densities or lower age‐0 yellow perch densities.  相似文献

In this study, we provide new information about the habitats selected by the blood fluke Paradeontacylix kampachi in the greater amberjack Seriola dumerili based on an exhaustive anatomical examination. From May to October 1998, 21 fish of the 0+ age class were collected from tanks of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography in Puerto de Mazarrón, Spain, for parasitological analysis. Individuals of P. kampachi were found in 17 of the 21 fish analysed (mean intensity +/- SD: 13.6 +/- 16.6; median: 6). Worms occurred in the girdles, cephalic kidney, sinus venosus, kidney and branchial arteries. A Friedman test with a post-hoc contrast revealed a significantly higher number of worms in the girdles when compared with the other sites, suggesting this may be the main habitat for P. kampachi. This location had never been reported as a habitat for any species of Paradeontacylix, probably because it had not been examined before. Girdles should be routinely examined to estimate the actual intensity of infection and to maximize the likelihood of finding this species of digenean.  相似文献

The prevalence and intensity of the hematophagous pennellid copepod Haemobaphes diceraus were monitored over a 10-mo period in shiner perch Cymatogaster aggregata at Pipers Lagoon, Nanaimo, British Columbia. The prevalence and mean intensity of metamorphosed adult female H. diceraus (n = 421) were 10.0% and 1.2 (+/-0.5 SD), respectively. The majority (97.9%) of infected fish had single infections, reflecting the possibility of intensity-dependent parasite-induced mortality, rejection of additional parasites, or both. Transforming females were detected throughout the year; however, there was no detectable seasonal pattern of colonization. Neither copepodids nor adult males of H. diceraus were observed on the gills of shiner perch, and this was consistent with the hypothesis that an intermediate host harbors these stages. Males of Haemobaphes sp. infected the gills of bay pipefish Syngnathus griseolineatus with a prevalence and mean intensity of 56.0% and 6.8 +/- 3.7, respectively. Transmission of H. diceraus to shiner perch probably occurs in inshore protected areas, where shiner perch ecologically overlap with the probable intermediate host of H. diceraus, the bay pipefish.  相似文献

The biology, chromosome number, and karyotype of a lung fluke, Paragonimus westermani (Kerbert, 1878) collected in Haenam, Haenam-gun Chollanam-do, Korea were analyzed. We compared the size of metacercariae from Haenam with those taken from a crayfish collected at Youngam, Youngam-gun, Chollanam-do, Korea. The mean length of P. westermani metacercariae from Haenam was 300.3 microm and that from Youngam was 362.0 microm. Adult worms were recovered from the lungs of experimentally infected dogs. The mean egg sizes obtained from adult flukes were 72.1 x 46.8 microm from Haenam and 93.5 x 54.2 microm from Youngam. Semisulcospira tegulata collected in the Youngam area were found to be infected with cercariae of P. westermani, one of the snail-borne human lung fluke trematodes in Korea. Of 4218 snails studied, 5 (0.12%) harbored P. westrermani larvae. This is the first report of S. tegulata serving as the initial intermediate host of P. westermani. The chromosome numbers of P. westermani from Haenam and Youngam were 2n = 22 and 3n = 33. The diploid type of P. westermani has not been previously reported in Korea.  相似文献

The population dynamics of larval Pomphorhynchus bulbocolli were studied in the amphipod intermediate host, Gammarus pseudolimnaeus. Amphipods were collected monthly from April 1982 to March 1983 from a study site at the West Fork of Drake's Creek, Simpson Co., Kentucky. The number of infected amphipods per m2 was lowest (0.6) in May and highest (27.3) in November. A total of 2,502 amphipods was examined; 1,575 (62.9%) were infected with P. bulbocolli. Infection intensity ranged from 1 to 12 with a mean of 1.83 +/- 0.03. Single and multiple worm infections were found in 800 (50.8%) and 775 (49.2%) amphipods, respectively. Female amphipods had higher prevalence and intensity of infections than males but differences were not significant. Prevalence in the monthly samples was lowest in May (5.1%) and highest in October (88.1%). The monthly mean intensity of infection was lowest in July (1.10 +/- 0.04) and highest in November (2.02 +/- 0.08). Amphipods in length classes 3 through 15 were infected with P. bulbocolli. In late summer and fall, amphipods in all length classes were infected, while in late winter and spring only large amphipods were infected. Recruitment of P. bulbocolli into amphipods was seasonal and the total infrapopulation within an amphipod was usually acquired at one time. There was little correlation between size and number of larvae present.  相似文献

Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and yellow perch (Perca flavescens) populations are often sympatric in the Great Plains region of the U.S.A. and portions of Canada; however, very little attention has been given to potential interactions between these species for available resources, especially during the early life stages. Relationships between age-0 bluegill and yellow perch growth and relative abundance were explored across multiple lakes and years within the Nebraska Sandhill region, USA. In addition, four habitat patch types (open water, Phragmites spp., Typha spp., Scirpus spp.) were sampled for age-0 bluegill and yellow perch, and food habits were examined for each species during August, September, and October of 2009 in one of these lakes. Age-0 yellow perch growth was negatively related to age-0 bluegill relative abundance across a spatiotemporal scale. Age-0 bluegill and yellow perch exhibited similar habitat use (moderate–high overlap), but generally consumed different important and dominant prey taxa (bluegill consumed both macroinvertebrates—56?% and zooplankton—44?%, while yellow perch consumed more zooplankton—66?%), which resulted in low overall diet overlap between species. Previous research indicates that age-0 yellow perch diet ontogeny often results in feeding predominately on macroinvertebrates and positively selecting them (and avoiding zooplankton prey) at sizes observed in our study. Therefore, yellow perch growth rates may be compromised by the presence of bluegill because of the need to consume less energetically profitable prey items such as zooplankton.  相似文献

Samples of perch, Perca fluviatilis L., were examined monthly for the presence of the intestinal trematode Bunodera luciopercae (Müller). Marked seasonal cycles in incidence and intensity of infection were found, with a minimum level in July, when all the fish examined were free of the fluke, and a maximum level in February. Five developmental stages of the fluke were recognized and the seasonal changes in the percentage distribution of these stages were studied. Infective larvae were found in the period August–March, with a peak in January. Gravid worms were mainly found in the period May-June. The frequency distribution of parasite counts were over-dispersed and followed the negative binomial distribution within fish samples from different periods of the year.  相似文献

The macro-pathological impact of plerocercoid infection of perch Perca fluviatilis livers was quantitatively determined by an index of liver lesion ( I LL) in fish from Upper Lake Constance (ULC). These results were compared to the I LL values of perch from two other lakes. From February to November 1999, 2071 perch were examined from the three sites. Prevalence of infection in ULC was 13% in actively growing first year (0+ year) perch and 94% in older fish, whereas in the two lakes used for comparison the figures for 0+ year perch were 12 and 20%, and in older fish 62 and 60%, respectively. Infected livers from perch caught in ULC revealed significantly higher I LL values than those of fish from the other two lakes. Perch livers from ULC containing more than three Triaenophorus nodulosus larvae also showed significantly more serious pathological alterations than uninfected livers or those with normal infection levels of one to three T. nodulosus . In all three lakes, excluding heavily infected perch from ULC, 0+ year perch livers revealed little or no damage, whereas in livers of older perch pathological alterations were apparent. In addition, analysis of age and total length data showed that perch infected with one to three parasites in ULC grew significantly slower than uninfected ones, and severely infected perch (greater than three parasites) grew significantly slower than those with a normal parasite load. With respect to mass, growth of ULC fish suffering normal infection (49% of all adults) was reduced by 9% and in those with severe infections (45% of all adults) growth was 16% below expected at normal harvesting age.  相似文献

Trout‐perch are abundant in many North American aquatic systems, but the ecological roles of trout‐perch as predators, competitors and prey remain relatively understudied. To elucidate the ecological role of trout‐perch in Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron, North America), the spatial and temporal diet composition was quantified and the frequency of occurrence of trout‐perch in diets of piscivorous walleye and yellow perch was evaluated. From May through November 2009–2010, trout‐perch and their potential predators and prey were collected monthly from five sites in Saginaw Bay using bottom‐trawls. Trout‐perch were abundant components of the Saginaw Bay fish community, and in 2009, represented 13.5% of fish collected in trawls, with only yellow perch (38%) and rainbow smelt (19.1%) being more common. Trout‐perch primarily consumed Chironomidae (84.0% of diet biomass) and exhibited strong, positive selection for Chironomidae and Amphipoda, suggesting that their diet preferences overlap with the economically important yellow perch and juvenile walleye. Energy content of trout‐perch averaged 4795 J g?1 wet and was similar to yellow perch (4662 J g?1 wet) and round goby (3740 J g?1 wet). Thus, they may provide a comparable food source for larger piscivorous fish. However, despite their high energy density, abundance, and spatial overlap with other fish prey species, trout‐perch were very rare in diets of piscivorous walleye and yellow perch in Saginaw Bay, indicating that trout‐perch are a weak conduit of energy transfer to higher trophic levels.  相似文献

The patterns of infection of American eels Anguilla rostrata, with the introduced swimbladder nematode Anguillicola crassus, in tributaries of middle and upper Chesapeake Bay are described. A total of 423 subadult eels was collected from 8 Bay tributaries from spring 1998 to fall 1999. Also, 30 elvers were collected from Ocean City, Maryland, in spring 1998. The numbers of juvenile and adult specimens of A. crassus in the swimbladder wall and lumen were counted. No elvers were infected. In subadult eels, prevalence of adult and juvenile stages combined ranged from 13% to 82%; mean intensity ranged from 2.6 to 9.0 worms per eel. Infection levels were highest for Susquehanna River eels (northernmost river) and lowest in the southernmost sites: St. Jerome's Creek and the Pocomoke River. Although eels from these 2 localities were larger, the low infection rates there are most likely due to reduced transmission in higher salinity water and not to eel size. Eels with both adult and juvenile stages of A. crassus were more common than expected by chance. This might be explained by inhibition of juveniles migrating into the swimbladder lumen when adults are already present there.  相似文献

Four parasite species (Crepidostomum cooperi, Cystidicoloides ephemeridarum, Acanthocephalus dirus, Salmincola edwardsii) infected 215 juvenile brook trout (105 young-of-year; 110, 1-yr-old) from Hunt Creek, Michigan, in 2003, 2004, and 2005. Prevalences of these species in 2004 (main study year) varied from 29 to 37%. Crepidostomnum cooperi had the highest mean intensity and mean abundance, followed by C. ephemeridarum. The number of fish infected with each parasite species was significantly higher in 1-yr-old fish than in young-of-year fish. Also, the mean intensities and mean abundances of C. cooperi and C. ephemeridarum and the mean abundance of A. dirus were significantly higher in older fish. The mean intensity of C. cooperi and prevalence of A. dirus were significantly higher in fish between creek sections. Fish length had a significant positive effect on the abundances of C. cooperi and C. ephemeridarum; parasite species richness, on the abundances of A. dirus and S. edwardsii; and parasite species richness in the 2003 and 2004 trout cohorts, respectively. Crepidostomum cooperi, C. ephemeridarum, A. dirus, and S. edwardsii commonly infect Michigan brook trout. The small number of parasite species infecting Hunt Creek brook trout is similar to the number of parasite species of brook trout from other Michigan creeks.  相似文献

General response patterns of fish populations tostress, originally proposed by Colby for fisheriesrehabilitation and later adapted by Munkittrick forcontaminants, were evaluated using an individual-basedsimulation model. General response patterns relatechanges in population-level variables to the type ofstress. The model follows the daily growth,mortality, and spawning of individual yellow perch andwalleye through their lifetime, and was corroboratedusing Oneida Lake data. Two versions of the model wereused: population (yellow perch only) and community(dynamic predation on yellow perch by walleye). Eightstresses were imposed on the population and communityversions of the model and 100-year simulations wereperformed. Response patterns were defined by changesin predicted yellow perch mean population abundance,mean age of adults, and mean adult growth (representedby mean length at age-7). Proposed response patternswere similar to those predicted using the populationversion of the model. Simulations using the communityversion of the model distorted the response patterns,either causing amplification, dampening, or reversalof many of the patterns. Predicted response patternsbecame unique when additional variables were included.Our model results suggest that caution is appropriatein interpreting general response patterns based onmean age, or when the population of interest plays amajor role in a relatively simple food web. The responsepattern approach may be better at identifying the lifestage impacted rather than the mechanism of the stress.  相似文献

The trophic linkage between yellow perch Perca flavescens and two exotic prey items, alewife Alosa pseudoharengus and round goby Neogobius melanostomus , was investigated in the extreme southern area of Lake Michigan during the summer of 2002. Yellow perch ≥100 mm total length, L T( n  = 1293) exhibited size selective feeding, with 148 fish containing round gobies and 120 fish containing alewives. The mean round goby L T, preyed on by yellow perch, was 23% of the predator L T, with a range of 7 to 47%, and mean alewife L T was 32% of yellow perch L T, with a range of 18 to 46%. Although the selection of prey size by yellow perch increased proportionally with yellow perch L T, prey consumed appeared smaller than theoretically possible based on gape size.  相似文献

Great Lakes coastal wetlands provide important spawning and nursery habitat as well as abundant food resources for yellow perch (Perca flavescens). We examined multiple years of fyke-net data from wetlands along Lakes Huron and Michigan to describe yellow perch distribution in drowned river mouth (DRM) and coastal fringing systems. Principal components analysis and multi-response permutation procedures indicated that DRM wetlands (yellow perch CPUE = 0.2) were eutrophic systems that often exhibit high temperatures and periods of hypoxia, whereas coastal fringing wetlands (yellow perch CPUE = 32.1) were less productive. Among the coastal fringing systems, Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron), displayed characteristics of being more productive and had more yellow perch. Most yellow perch captured in Saginaw Bay were age-0, suggesting that it was an important nursery habitat. Among DRM ecosystems, we found that the downstream lake macrohabitats contained more yellow perch than upstream wetlands; however, there was no significant difference in abiotic characteristics to explain the higher catches in lakes. We hypothesize that yellow perch were more prevalent in wetlands with intermediate productivity during summer because these systems provide abundant food resources without the harsh conditions associated with highly eutrophic wetlands.  相似文献

Determining the causes of mortality in populations of fish is inherently difficult. To simplify the determination of whether parasite-induced mortality occurs, parasitologists have relied on 3 types of subjective analyses of graphs. Peaked host age-parasite intensity curves concomitant with a decrease in the degree of dispersion (measured by variance-to-mean ratio) of parasites in older age-classes of fishes, a slope of less than 2.0 for a log-log graph of variance versus mean intensity of infection, and differences between truncated and nontruncated forms of a theoretical frequency distribution for the parasite are considered indicators of parasite-induced mortality in fishes. The nematode Raphidascaris acus causes significant parasite-induced mortality in natural populations of yellow perch (Perca flavescens) in Dauphin Lake, Manitoba, Canada. Using this fish-parasite system we present a comparison of some of the graphical techniques used by parasitologists to detect parasite-induced mortality and show how confidence ellipses based on the parameters beta 0 and beta 1 of a linear model for growth of yellow perch (weight = beta 0 + beta 1 x age) can be used to compare many growth curves simultaneously. When plotted in a bivariate fashion (beta 0 vs. beta 1), vertical displacement of confidence ellipses along the ordinate (beta 1) are due to sublethal effects on growth of fishes in response to parasites, whereas lateral shifts along the abscissa (beta 0) are suggestive of parasite-induced mortality.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
