Morphological and histological examinations of gills excised from adult winter flounder, Pleuronectes americanus Walbaum, collected at clean and contaminated areas of Long Island Sound were undertaken to assess possible biological consequences of contamination. On the basis of previous studies, three collection sites were chosen: Shoreham, New York, a relatively clean, unindustrialized area, and New Haven Harbor, Connecticut and Hempstead Harbor, New York, both industrialized and heavily populated.
Gill samples were taken monthly at all three sites for light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination. Results from both techniques suggest a relationship between contamination of the sediments and the prevalence of bifurcated gill filaments, the condition being most severe at New Haven Harbor. The bifurcations were not consistently associated with any parasitological or pathological conditions when examined by light microscopy.
Gill samples were subsequently taken from juvenile winter flounder caught in New Haven Harbor to determine how early in the life cycle gill bifurcations develop. The data show that the majority of these anomalies begin in juvenile flounder rather than in embryos, larvae, or adults. Gill bifurcations were found in 27% of the 2-year-old flounder, compared to 12% of the 1-year-old fish and 15% of the adults from the same area.  相似文献

The relation between serum uric acid and social class is examined by sex among 910 persons in Wensleydale, Yorkshire, 321 persons in Watford, Hertfordshire, and 1,213 persons in New Haven, Connecticut, all of whom were drawn from the general population. Among the men of Wensleydale there is a tendency of marginal significance at the 5% level for serum uric acid to increase with decreasing social class; in the New Haven women this same trend is significant at the 2·5% level; no trend was found among any of the other four sex-specific groups. Age did not account for the patterns observed. The difference between these findings and those of several studies from the United States is consistent with the view that both serum uric acid levels and gout are under multifactorial control.  相似文献

The toy industry has touted ethnically correct dolls as a progressive solution to representation and inclusion in the toy box, and in children's lives. Ethnographic work with ten-year-old, poor and working-class black children in New Haven, Connecticut complicates these assertions. These children had very few ethnically correct dolls. Instead, girls had white dolls that they brought into their worlds through styling their hair in ways racially marked as black. Contrasting a case study of Mattel's Shani dolls with an ethnographic look at race and commodities among New Haven kids, this paper locates children's consumption within the context of social inequality, a context examined in few studies of toys or consumption. Taking kids as primary ethnographic subjects suggests ways in which this largely silenced group can speak to larger social and theoretical issues, among them race, class, gender, and age. The history of pediatrics at the Yale University School of Medicine can be divided into eight historical eras. The "Paleohistorical Era" included colonial figures such as Governor John Winthrop and Hezekiah Beardsley who wrote about children''s disease in colonial times. Eli Ives, Professor of the Diseases of Children at Yale Medical School gave the first systematic pediatric course in America in the first half of the nineteenth century. During the second era, from 1830-1920, the New Haven Hospital was opened. An affiliation between Yale University and the New Haven Hospital led to the formal establishment of clinical departments including pediatrics in the early 20th century. Six eras coinciding with successive pediatric chairman have led the department to its present respected position in American pediatrics. The department''s 75th anniversary in 1996 is an occasion to recognize many of the department''s accomplishments and leaders over the years. It is also a time to reaffirm the mission of the department: to the health needs of the children of Connecticut and beyond, to the advancement of scientific knowledge of infants and children and their diseases, and to the training and educational of the pediatric clinicians, educators and investigators of the future.  相似文献

Diagnostic ultrasound came to Yale in the 1960s and was first developed in Glasgow and London. This story tells us that ultrasound was well-established in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale University School of Medicine in the Yale-New Haven Hospital by 1970. By then it had caught up with the pioneers in New York, Denver, and even Glasgow.  相似文献

On April 3, 2013, the fourth biennial StemCONN conference took place at the Omni Hotel at Yale in New Haven, Connecticut. This conference featured talks by scientists from across the country who are currently at the forefront of stem cell research, as well as talks by Edison Liu, President and CEO of the Jackson Laboratory, and Jonathan Rotherberg, PhD, a Yale alumnus and Ion Torrent Systems Founder and CEO. The conference highlighted the importance of stem cell research to both science and medicine and emphasized the necessity of continued government funding for this research, both in Connecticut and nationwide.  相似文献
