The protein synthesis world

Over the coming months TiBS will be publishing a series of articles that review different aspects of 'Protein Synthesis'. This series has been specially commissioned and edited by Matthias Hentze and Paul Schimmel, both longstanding members of the TiBS Editorial Board. The exposure of man to altitude when flying: from Paul Bert to today

This paper is organised around Paul Bert's inputs to modern aviation physiology. Paul Bert gave a masterly historical work, which established the notion of oxygen partial pressure as the right physiological parameter for the body. Human protection against aviation altitude takes this notion into account, by modifying either the pressure surrounding the body or the oxygen fraction in inhaled gases. We also consider the case of protection against accidental loss of aircraft pressurization.

Being held accountable: why attributing responsibility matters

Debates over reconciliation, atonement, forgiveness, and forgetting involve political and personal elements, with substantial investments and commitments. I contrast two perspectives: one stresses unconditional forgiveness independent of atonement; the other reflects on the importance of moral responsibility for the formation of the person. Being held accountable, for Ricoeur, matters for the development of the self. For Derrida, forgiveness is a defining aspect of being human, becoming debased when seen as a legal form of justice. I use philosophical arguments and ethnographic writings from Papua New Guinea, Cyprus, and the Holocaust to examine reconciliation and irreconciliation as strategies for either reaffirming or reimagining a common world.
