Mating behavior of the Far Eastern catfish, Silurus asotus (Siluriformes: Siluridae), was observed in a ricefield system facing the shore of Lake Biwa in mid-May to early June in 1990–1997. A set behavioral sequence similar to those of two other silurid fishes, S. biwaensis and S. lithophilus, both endemic to the Lake Biwa system, was observed: “chasing,”“clinging,”“enfolding” while “squeezing” by the male, and “circling” by the spawning pair. This form of mating behavior is quite different from that of S. asotus reported from the Ooi River system in Kyoto Prefecture, which mainly spawns in running water in ditches. Some aspects of the reproductive ecology of the rock catfish Silurus lithophilus (Siluriformes: Siluridae), a species endemic to the Lake Biwa system, were investigated from April to July in 1989–1994. Field observations were conducted at a rocky shoal, which was also a spawning ground of S. biwaensis, along the shore of the Seta River, the lake's outlet. Spawning of S. lithophilus occurred around midnight at shallow, rocky places on the shoal (5–70 cm in water depth) from early May to mid-July, starting earlier than S. biwaensis (mid-May to mid-July). Spawning tended to occur at low water temperatures irrespective of high-water events, unlike S. biwaensis, and in low densities (fewer than 8 fish per night) compared to S. biwaensis (1–45 fish per night). Although the rock catfish tended to appear and spawn at higher frequencies on nights when S. biwaensis spawned or appeared, it always avoided conflict with the latter species by spawning at sites far from those used by S. biwaensis or after S. biwaensis had left the vicinity. The survival of eggs of S. lithophilus might be favored by a strategy of diverting predator attention from them by synchronizing spawning nights with S. biwaensis. The shape and development of bony elements of the neurocranium and suspensorium were studied in three species of Japanese catfish (Silurus) from the viewpoint of comparative morphology. InS. asotus andS. biwaensis the order of appearance of the bony elements was similar, but the ossification of most elements was delayed inS. lithophilus. The neurocranium and Suspensorium of adultS. lithophilus retain juvenile features compared with the other two species. On the other hand, in the skull ofS. biwaensis the sagittal crest of the supraoccipital, the ridge of the pterotic, and the hyomandibular process are more developed than in the other two species.  相似文献

This study reviews the nominal taxa within the species “Nemachilus” stoliczkae and “N.” dorsonotatus, described by Herzenstein (1888). N. dorsonotatus, N. d. retropinnis, and N. plagiognathus are reviewed within the species Triplophysa stoliczkae; it is suggested that this species is represented by at least 5 subspecies. N. stoliczkae brevicauda, N. s. leptosoma (synonym, N. s. productus), and N. s. crassicauda are considered as valid species, the last 2 are related to the group including the species T. tenuis, T. choprai, T. tenuicauda, and T. yasinensis rather than with T. stoliczkae. It was shown that the “stoliczkae” species group (sensu Prokofiev, 2001) should be divided into three species groups: “stoliczkae” (s. str.), “tenuis,” and “robusta”; their diagnoses and the species composition are presented. A new species from the “stoliczkae” group is described (T. scapanognatha sp. nova), related to T. tanggulaensis (Zhu, 1982). Original Russian Text ? A.M. The physical factor inducing spawning of the Biwa catfish, Silurus biwaensis (Siluriformes: Siluridae), an endemic species of Lake Biwa, was investigated on the basis of field observations on 150 nights at the spawning site, the rocky shore of the Seta River, the lake's outlet, and environmental data from April to July in 1989–1994. The catfish gathered at the spawning site when the water level of the river rapidly rose and the rocky shoal became submerged, within a wide range of water temperature (15.0°–30.0°C); their spawning was induced in relation to increases in the submerged portion of the rocky shoal. This observation suggests that water level control operations in Lake Biwa might critically affect the spawning of this and other fish species. Several chromosome types have been recognized in Citrus and related genera by chromomycin A3 (CMA) banding patterns and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). They can be used to characterize cultivars and species or as markers in hybridization and backcrossing experiments. In the present work, characterization of six cultivars of P. trifoliata (“Barnes”, “Fawcett”, “Flying Dragon”, “Pomeroy”, “Rubidoux”, “USDA”) and one P. trifoliata × C. limonia hybrid was performed by sequential analyses of CMA banding and FISH using 5S and 45S rDNA as probes. All six cultivars showed a similar CMA+ banding pattern with the karyotype formula 4B + 8D + 6F. The capital letters indicate chromosomal types: B, a chromosome with one telomeric and one proximal band; D, with only one telomeric band; F, without bands. In situ hybridization labeling was also similar among cultivars. Three chromosome pairs displayed a closely linked set of 5S and 45S rDNA sites, two of them co-located with the proximal band of the B type chromosomes (B/5S-45S) and the third one co-located with the terminal band of a D pair (D/5S-45S). The B/5S-45S chromosome has never been found in any citrus accessions investigated so far. Therefore, this B chromosome can be used as a marker to recognize the intergeneric Poncirus × Citrus hybrids. The intergeneric hybrid analyzed here displayed the karyotype formula 4B + 8D + 6F, with two chromosome types B/5S-45S and two D/5S-45S. The karyotype formula and the presence of two B/5S-45S chromosomes clearly indicate that the plant investigated is a symmetric hybrid. It also demonstrates the suitability of karyotype analyses to differentiate zygotic embryos or somatic cell fusions involving trifoliate orange germplasm. During the submission of this paper, we analyzed 25 other citrus cultivars with the same methodology and we found that the chromosome marker reported here can indeed distinguish Poncirus trifoliata from grapefruits, pummelos, and one variegated access of Citrus, besides the previously reported access of limes, limons, citrons, and sweet-oranges. However, among 14 mandarin cultivars, two of them displayed a single B/5S-45S chromosome, whereas in Citrus hystrix D.C., a far related species belonging to the Papeda subgenus, this chromosome type was found in homozygosis. Since these two mandarin cultivars are probably of hybrid origin, we assume that for almost all commercial cultivars and species of the subgenus Citrus this B type chromosome is a useful genetic marker.  相似文献

Disanthus cercidifolius Maxim. var. longipes H.T. Chang usually has two inflorescences growing in opposite directions in the axillae, but occasionally three inflorescences grow paratactically. The typical flowering process could be divided into 4 periods: “Pre-dehiscence”, “Initial dehiscence”, “Full dehiscence” and “Withering”. Both the natural population and the planted population had a flowering peak of 15–35 days after the first flower bloomed. There were significant differences between the time courses of flowering of the two populations. Out-crossing is the main breeding system in this species. And autogamy decreases the risk of reproductive failure of this species. The main insect pollinators of D. cercidifolius var. longipes are Episyrphus balteatus de Geer, Scaptodrosophila coracina Kikkawa and Peng, Polistes olivaceus de Geer, Apis cerana Fabricius, Nezara viridula L. and Coccinella septempunctata L., and so on. Among the insects, S. coracina and E. balteatus are the most important and efficient pollinators, but others are inefficient pollinators. Though wind pollination is not efficient, it guarantees reproduction when insect pollinators are not available. “Mass flowering” is an adaptive behavior and reproductive strategy of this species, and “few fruiting” could be caused by the lack of pollinators.  相似文献

A study of genotype-by-salinity interaction was carried out to compare the behavior of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in two F2 populations derived from crosses between the cherry tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. var. cerasiforme, and two wild relatives Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium (Jusl.) Mill. and Lycopersicon chesmannii f. minor (Hook. f.) Mull., grown at two environmental conditions (optimum and high salinity). QTLs for earliness and fruit yield could be classified into four groups: “response-sensitive”, those detected only under control conditions or whose contribution significantly decreased in salinity; “response-tolerant”, detected only in salinity or in which the direction of their additive effects changed; “constitutive”, detected in both growing conditions; and “altered” QTLs, those where the degree of dominance changed according to the presence or absence of salt. Epistatic interactions were also influenced by the salt treatment. This differential allele effect at some (non-constitutive) QTLs induced by salt stress will make selection under an “optimum environment” unfruitful for the “response-tolerant” QTLs. Similarly, selection under salinity will ignore “response-sensitive” QTLs. Given that salinity is highly variable in the field, marker-assisted selection should take into account not only the “response-tolerant” but also the “response-sensitive” QTLs although there might be cases where selection in some QTLs for both conditions is not feasible. Comparing both populations, very few QTLs showed the same behavior. Received: 5 August 1996 / Accepted: 25 October 1996  相似文献

Isolates from the marine actinobacterial genus Salinispora were cultured from marine sponges collected from along the length of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Queensland, Australia. Strains of two species of Salinispora, Salinispora arenicola and “Salinispora pacifica”, were isolated from GBR sponges Dercitus xanthus, Cinachyrella australiensis and Hyattella intestinalis. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences of representative strains, selected via BOX-PCR screening, identified previously unreported phylotypes of the species “S. pacifica”. The classification of these microdiverse 16S rRNA groups was further confirmed by analysis of the ribonuclease P RNA (RNase P RNA) gene through both phylogenetic and secondary structure analysis. The use of RNase P RNA sequences combined with 16S rRNA sequences allowed distinction of six new intraspecies phylotypes of “S. pacifica” within the geographical area of the GBR alone. One of these new phylotypes possessed a localised regional distribution within the GBR.  相似文献

The future status of sharks is an issue of widespread conservation concern due to declines in many species in the face of high levels of exploitation to satisfy market demands for products, especially fins. Substantial declines in the large-bodied hammerhead sharks, Sphyrna lewini, S. mokarran and S. zygaena, even in regions where some management occurs, indicate that informed conservation measures are warranted for these circumglobally distributed species. Despite the importance of assessing shark catch and trade on a species-specific basis to detect potential overexploitation of individual species, achieving this goal for hammerheads has proven elusive due to difficulties in identification of their products. Here, we present the development and application of a diagnostic, streamlined, five-primer multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay utilizing species-specific primers based on nuclear ribosomal ITS2 for the three hammerhead species throughout their global distribution. Application of this assay to investigations of the fin market confirmed the presence of hammerhead fins in the international trade. A study of the world’s largest fin market in Hong Kong revealed a high concordance between specific Chinese-name trade categories and fins from these three species (“Bai Chun” with S. lewini, “Gui Chun” with S. zygaena and “Gu Pian” with S.␣mokarran), and clear species preferences. This concordance information allows the use of market records for monitoring species-specific trends in trade and exploitation rates. The assay is also proving useful for identification of shark body parts in U.S. fisheries law-enforcement activities. Screening of morphologically identified “ S. lewini” from globally distributed areas using this assay with subsequent whole ITS2 sequencing suggests a cryptic species closely related to S. lewini occurs off the SE USA coast.  相似文献

Spawning activity of the catfish, Silurus asotus, takes place in temporary water (rice fields) from early evening to midnight, generally in connection with rainfall, from late April to late August. Spawning of the catfish was correlated with hydrographic parameters dependent on rainfall: daily precipitation, turbidity, water depth, and water temperature. The spawning habits of the catfish, and in particular the use of temporary waters such as rice fields that become submerged after rainfall or by irrigation, are presumed to be adaptations to the Asian monsoon climate with a pronounced rainy season. The apparent sex ratio of the catfish was extremely biased toward females. Intraspecific variation in the reproductive ecology, particularly mating behavior, of this species is observed among local populations. Factors that may have caused this variation are discussed in the context of a comparison of mating behavior, reproductive environment, and sex ratio between the Lake Biwa population of S. asotus and other conspecific populations, as well as two other species of silurid catfish that occur in the Lake Biwa drainage, S. biwaensis and S. lithophilus.  相似文献

We modelled the effect of habitat heterogeneity on the abundance of the submediterranean Saponaria bellidifolia, a red list species in Romania. The study was designed at two scales: 100 and 0.5 m2. At larger scale, generalized additive models and canonical correspondence analysis were used to model the density of ramets, whereas at microscale, binomial logistic regression was employed to model the species’ occurrence. S. bellidifolia abundance responded sensitively to habitat type (classified as “grassy”, “rocky” and “scree”), rather than to microclimatic variables. At both scales, habitat type was the best predictor of ramet abundance, followed by slope and vegetation cover. At 0.5 m2, soil depth was also a good predictor of species occurrence. The data revealed that screes are the most suitable habitats for hosting relatively large populations of this rare species, because of occasional natural disturbances and presumably lower interspecific competition.  相似文献

In a 5-ha area of primary lowland rain forest in Borneo, we observed four polydomous colonies of the night-active giant ant Camponotus gigas. The nonoverlapping, three-dimensional territories in the canopy had a ground size up to 0.8 ha. C. gigas showed a distinct territorial behavior: (1) specific “barrack” nests, especially containing many majors, were situated at the borders and were established during long-term territorial conflicts; (2) trunk trails were regularly patrolled by majors that attacked alien conspecifics and some other ant species violently; and (3) sentinels, often involved in long-enduring conflicts with neighboring ant colonies, defended the borders at bridgeheads. Interspecific conflicts with sympatric Camponotus species always led to violent, “bloody” fights of all castes. Intraspecific conflicts, however, were solved by ritual fights (“front leg boxing”) of majors. C. gigas performed a de-escalation strategy to end short periods of true intraspecific “ant war” that we provoked experimentally. Artificially induced ritualized combats continued over weeks also in the absence of baits, indicating that borders may become established by long-term conflicts of attrition. We discuss the differences between ritual fights in desert and rain-forest ants and apply Lanchester's theory of battles to our findings. Received: October 17, 2000 / Accepted: May 14, 2001  相似文献

Candidatus Liberobacter,” the uncultured bacterium associated with citrus Huanglongbing (HLB) disease, is an α-Proteobacteria, and two species, “Candidatus L. africanum” and “Candidatus L. asiaticum,” have been characterized by sequence analysis of the 16S rDNA and β operon (rplKAJL-rpoBC) genes. These genes were isolated by PCR and random cloning of DNA from infected plants. However, this strategy is laborious and allowed selection of only three Liberobacter DNA fragments. In this paper, we described isolation of additional genes using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD). In total, 102 random 10-mer primers were used in PCR reactions on healthy and Liberobacter-infected plant DNA. Eight DNA bands amplified from infected plant DNA were cloned and analyzed. Six of them were found to be part of the Liberobacter genome by sequence and hybridization experiments. On these DNA fragments, four genes were identified: nusG, pgm, omp, and a hypothetical protein gene. These results indicate that RAPD can be used to clone DNA of uncultured organisms. Den sharing by conspecific spiny lobsters (aggregation) is modulated by chemical attraction but may confer several, not necessarily mutually exclusive, antipredator byproduct benefits: a “guide effect”, which only benefits the individual attracted to a sheltered conspecific; a “dilution effect”, which reduces per-capita risk of predation simply through aggregation; or active “group defense”. Each potential benefit has a different set of predictors (relationships between aggregation and conspecific or predator densities), but conflicting results could suggest the simultaneous operation of more than one benefit. These predictions were tested for coexisting Panulirus guttatus (a reef-obligate) and Panulirus argus (a temporary reef-dweller) using data collected during 11 surveys on fixed sites over a coral reef in Mexico. P. guttatus greatly outnumbered P. argus, but P. argus showed a greater tendency to aggregate. All three benefits of den sharing operated for the more social P. argus, with “group defense” being of the most benefit for larger individuals, and the “guide” and “dilution” effects for smaller individuals recently immigrating into the reef habitat and sharing dens with larger conspecifics. P. guttatus did not display “group defense” and its aggregations appeared to be modulated by the interplay between attraction and aggressive behaviors. This species relied more on solitary crypticity, especially at larger sizes, but appeared to benefit from a “guide effect” at high conspecific densities. In experimental tanks, each species tended to aggregate when tested separately, but when tested jointly, aggregation among P. guttatus was significantly reduced. The experimental results reflect the differential patterns of aggregation between the fore-reef, where P. guttatus dominated, and the back-reef, where coexistence of both species was greater.  相似文献

Plagiochila dubia Lindenb. & Gottsche is reduced to a synonym of the Neotropical P. patula (Sw.) Lindenb. Specimens from the Canary Islands and Madeira proved to belong to the eastern North American P. virginica A.Evans, new to Europe. Phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) of nuclear ribosomal DNA of ten Plagiochila species produced four independent lineages that are well supported by all bootstrap analyses (maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony, and distance). These lineages correspond with the Plagiochila sections Arrectae, Contiguae, Cucullatae and Glaucescentes. Spruce's “Ramiflorae” and “Cauliflorae” may no longer be regarded as monophyletic units of Plagiochila. Received August 19, 2001 Accepted October 11, 2001  相似文献

A new species of notothenioid fish, Pogonophryne bellingshausenensis n. sp., is described from the Bellingshausen Sea, Antarctica. The new species belongs to the dorsally-spotted “mentella” group of the genus and is characterized by having a short (about 13% SL) mental barbel with a short (about 16% of barbel length), narrow (barely wider than the stalk), and relatively inconspicuous terminal expansion composed of short, irregular, fingerlike processes. Compared to most other dorsally-spotted species of Pogonophryne (“barsukovi”, “marmorata”, and “mentella” groups), P. bellingshausenensis has a relatively wide (about 7% SL) interorbital region. An unspotted patch on the median dorsal surface of the head, posterior to the posttemporal ridges and anterior to the first dorsal fin, has not been observed previously in any dorsally-spotted species. The holotype was collected at 1,947 m, one of the deepest records for any species of Pogonophryne. A revised key to the ten species of the “mentella” group of Pogonophryne is also provided.  相似文献

Male mating behavior of a Japanese pond frog,Rana porosa brevipoda, was observed in an enclosed pond. Males organized chorus aggregation during the night. Within the chorus, most males defended “floating” territories. Territorial males exhibited 2 types of calls: advertisement and encounter. Mating occurred primarily in male territories with female initiation, while most spawning occurred outside of the territories. After spawning, males returned to their territories and resumed display behavior. The mating system of this frog is analogous to the typical lek system. Alternative male mating tactics, including satellite and ambush behavior, were also observed. Satellite and ambush males mated with females through forced clasping.  相似文献
