The copepods Calanus australis and Calanoides carinatus developedfrom egg to adult in 20.3 and 18.3 days respectively at 15.5?Cand 16.0 and 12.0 days at 19.5?C. For both species the durationof the first two naupliar stages was short, <1 day. The thirdnaupliar stage was prolonged in C.australis but short in C.carinatus. Isochronal development was approximated from fourthnauplius through third copepodite; fourth and fifth copepoditestages were relatively long. Only female C.australis were produced;60% of the C.carinatus were female. Equiproportional developmentwas found for C.carinatus but not for C.australis. For bothspecies the variance in stage duration was established at thethird nauplius then remained unchanged through the older stages.In calculating developmental rates several commonly used methodswere compared. The method of ‘first appearance of an individualof a given stage’ and ‘mean time of appearance ofa stage’ both yielded estimates of development time thatwere 10–15% faster than the more commonly used methodof ‘median development time’. Plants of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) were grown under selectedlight conditions in controlled environmental chambers in orderto monitor the role of photoperiod, irradiance level and inputlight energy in plant development. Results indicated that thedaily input of light energy was the most important light factoraffecting leaf development while photoperiod and irradiancelevel had the major influences on storage organ development.Distribution of assimilates to leaves and storage organs variedunder different light regimes with long photoperiods and highirradiances producing the largest storage organs. Once initiated,the rate of storage organ growth was similar under all testedlight environments. The larval development of populations initially composed ofnauplii Nl of Euterpina acurifrons (Copepoda: Harpacticoida)is studied in the laboratory. A first experiment in which temperatureis the only varying parameter allows an assessment of inherentvariability of development. A simple mathematical model thenaccounts for the effect of temperature on development. We findresidence times to be almost identical for all developmentalstages, and higher mortality rates in the case of stages N6and Cl. The model also accounts for latency times observed inthe development of populations including larval stages. A secondexperiment, run at constant temperature, shows that a deficientfood supply increases the average residence time of early stages,as well as their variance. Data obtained on a population bredin tanks under unregulated trophic and temperature conditionsshow that the variation with time of the stage composition ofthe population modulates the effect of external factors on thegrowth of the population.  相似文献

Life cycles of the slugs Deroceras reticulatum and Arion intermediuswere compared over a four-year period on permanent pasture nearOvingham, Northumberland. Both species were semelparous, theirlife cycles taking about one year. D. reticulatum, unlike A.intermedius and other species, had two overlapping generationsthat laid their eggs in late spring and autumn respectivelyand also had one instead of two immature phases in its lifecycle. The pattern and rates of growth for the immature phasesin the life cycle of A. intermedius differed markedly from thosedescribed under laboratory conditions. Growth in the infantilephase was delayed in the field by low winter temperatures whilesecond stage growth was usually delayed in late spring by dryconditions. The life cycle of A. intermedius appears to be synchronisedby seasonal changes in photoperiod, unlike that of D. reticulatum.Growth in D. reticulatum continued throughout the winter monthsexcept under exceptionally cold conditions and was not usuallydelayed by dry conditions in spring. The size of hermaphroditegland relative to body weight in D. reticulatum reached a maximumin mature-unmated slugs and then became progressively smalleras the slug approached the post-reproductive stage which wasrelatively brief. Exceptionally dry conditions in 1962 delayedthe development of the hermaphrodite gland, the maximum sizereached was significantly reduced and fewer eggs were laid. Genetic correlations are frequently estimated from natural and experimental populations, yet many of the statistical properties of estimators of are not known, and accurate methods have not been described for estimating the precision of estimates of Our objective was to assess the statistical properties of multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), restricted maximum likelihood (REML), and maximum likelihood (ML) estimators of by simulating bivariate normal samples for the one-way balanced linear model. We estimated probabilities of non-positive definite MANOVA estimates of genetic variance-covariance matrices and biases and variances of MANOVA, REML, and ML estimators of and assessed the accuracy of parametric, jackknife, and bootstrap variance and confidence interval estimators for MANOVA estimates of were normally distributed. REML and ML estimates were normally distributed for but skewed for and 0.9. All of the estimators were biased. The MANOVA estimator was less biased than REML and ML estimators when heritability (H), the number of genotypes (n), and the number of replications (r) were low. The biases were otherwise nearly equal for different estimators and could not be reduced by jackknifing or bootstrapping. The variance of the MANOVA estimator was greater than the variance of the REML or ML estimator for most H, n, and r. Bootstrapping produced estimates of the variance of close to the known variance, especially for REML and ML. The observed coverages of the REML and ML bootstrap interval estimators were consistently close to stated coverages, whereas the observed coverage of the MANOVA bootstrap interval estimator was unsatisfactory for some H, n, and r. The other interval estimators produced unsatisfactory coverages. REML and ML bootstrap interval estimates were narrower than MANOVA bootstrap interval estimates for most H, and r. Several leaf photosynthesis models were developed from wellcontrolled experiments in growth chambers. However, only a fewhave been validated under greenhouse conditions for their quantitativeand qualitative adequacy. In this paper, rates of net photosynthesisfor a tomato crop (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) were measuredin a semi-commercial greenhouse (615 m3) for a significant timeperiod. Concomitant measurements of climatic conditions andLAI were used for simulation of net photosynthesis using theTOMGRO model which integrates Acock's model for photosynthesiscalculations. From simulations and from sensitivity analysis,the prediction of net photosynthesis appeared to be very sensitiveto the quantum use efficiency. The Acock model with originalparameters underestimated the net photosynthesis rate, but anincrease in the quantum use efficiency by 10% gave a good fit.In an effort to generalize the validity of the model, a residualanalysis was performed and showed a systematic bias relatedto light intensity intercepted by the canopy. The Marquardtalgorithm was used to adjust our data to the model but did noteliminate residual heterogeneity of variance with new parametervalues. A comparison of the activity and properties of the enzyme phosphoenolpyruvatecarboxylase (PEPC) was made for plants of Sedum telephium L.grown under low (70 µmol m–2 s–1) or high(500µmol m–2 s–1) PPFD and subjected to varyingdegrees of water stress. Under well-watered conditions onlyplants grown under high PPFD accumulated titratable acidityovernight and the extractable activity of PEPC was almost 2-foldhigher in these plants than in plants grown under low PPFD.Increasing drought stress resulted in a substantial increasein the activity of PEPC extracted both during the light anddark periods and a decrease in the sensitivity to inhibitionby malic acid. The magnitude of these changes was determinedby the severity and duration of drought and by light intensity.A comparison of the kinetic properties of PEPC from severelydroughted plants revealed that plants droughted under high PPFDhad a lower Km for PEP than plants under low PPFD. Additionof 2·0 mol m–3 malate resulted in an increase inthe Km for PEP, with plants draughted under low PPFD havinga significantly higher Km in the presence of malic acid comparedto those under high PPFD. Response to the activator glc-6-P,which lowered the Km for PEP, also varied between plants grownunder the two light regimes. Under well-watered conditions PEPCextracted from plants under high PPFD was more sensitive toactivation by glc-6-P than those under low PPFD. After the severedrought treatment, however, the Km for PEP in the presence ofglc-6-P was similar for enzyme extracted from plants grown underboth light regimes. Soluble sugars and starch were depletedovernight and were both possible sources of substrate for PEPC.With increasing drought, however, the depletion of starch relativeto soluble sugars increased under both light regimes. The propertiesof PEPC and the characteristics of carbohydrate accumulation/depletionare discussed in relation to the regulation of CAM in S. telephiumgrown under different light and watering regimes. A positive genetic correlation between basal metabolic rate (BMR) and maximal (VO(2)max) rate of oxygen consumption is a key assumption of the aerobic capacity model for the evolution of endothermy. We estimated the genetic (V(A), additive, and V(D), dominance), prenatal (V(N)), and postnatal common environmental (V(C)) contributions to individual differences in metabolic rates and body mass for a genetically heterogeneous laboratory strain of house mice (Mus domesticus). Our breeding design did not allow the simultaneous estimation of V(D) and V(N). Regardless of whether V(D) or V(N) was assumed, estimates of V(A) were negative under the full models. Hence, we fitted reduced models (e.g., V(A) + V(N) + V(E) or V(A) + V(E)) and obtained new variance estimates. For reduced models, narrow-sense heritability (h(2)(N)) for BMR was <0.1, but estimates of h(2)(N) for VO(2)max were higher. When estimated with the V(A) + V(E) model, the additive genetic covariance between VO(2)max and BMR was positive and statistically different from zero. This result offers tentative support for the aerobic capacity model for the evolution of vertebrate energetics. However, constraints imposed on the genetic model may cause our estimates of additive variance and covariance to be biased, so our results should be interpreted with caution and tested via selection experiments.  相似文献

Because environments are temporally variable, animals may oftenestimate the current environmental state to inform their behavioralchoices. However, using experience may cause behavior to lagbehind the current state of the environment, and estimates maysuffer from sampling errors. We used stochastic dynamic modelsto examine the environmental conditions that favor flexible ratherthan fixed estimates and behaviors. The examination was conductedin the context of reproductive decisions made by the femalepeacock wrasse (Symphodus tinca), a nearshore Mediterraneanfish. Female peacock wrasses can choose to spawn in a nest,with males that defend these nests within territories, or outof a nest, with males that defend neither territories nor nests.A female must expend effort and time to find nesting males,and the profitability of this search, relative to spawning with nonnestingmales, changes with the density of nests and relative hatching successof eggs in and out of nests. A female can increase her fitnessby estimating the environment's state and matching her reproductivedecisions to the current environment. These estimates can beflexible and formed by experience, or fixed and formed by selection.We found that flexible estimates based on experience do betterwhen there is variance within and between seasons and when thereis greater uncertainty. The optimal rate for forgetting experiencesis set by the rate of environmental change. Comparisons of predictedfemale behavior using flexible and fixed estimates with observed behaviorsuggest that females use estimates that are updated by experience.  相似文献

A Second-order Dynamic Model for the Frost Hardiness of Trees   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The development of frost hardiness in forest trees is describedby a dynamic model in which the input variables are the prevailingenvironmental conditions and the developmental stage of trees.The assumption of the model is that for each temperature andphotoperiod there is a discrete stationary level of frost hardiness,which is attained if these environmental factors remain constant.The dependence of the stationary level on temperature and photoperiodis assumed to be piece-wise linear and additive. The rate ofacclimation, i.e. frost hardening or dehardening, is describedas a second-order dynamic process with two time constants, thesecond of which changes depending on the stage of the annualdevelopment of the trees. The frost hardiness model was calibratedand tested using experimental data from Douglas fir [Pseudotsugamenziesii var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco] seedlings. Current methods to determine the stage duration of copepodsfrom stage-frequency dataare often based on inappropriate distributionfunctions of the stage development time; they also lack a clearprobability model that describes the random noise in the data.This study aims to estimate the duration of copepod life stages,using an asymmetrical probability distribution function of developmenttime. Data on stage frequency were collected from cultured cohortsof Acartia clausi, Temora longicornis and Pseudocalanus elongatus.In addition, data from cultures of Calanoides carinatus andCalanus australis by Peterson and Painting (J. Plankton Res.,12, 283–293, 1990) were used. Following Landry(Limnol.Oceanogr., 20, 854–858, 1975), for each stage the numberof animals that did not yet pass that stage was plotted as afunction of time. A gamma distribution function appeared todescribe the expected proportion of these animals versus time.The number of animals is assumed to follow a binomial distributionand the model parameters are estimated by maximizing the likelihood.This method enables individuals with a retarded development,which are usually deleted from the data material, to be dealtwith. The median development time was estimated from the gammadistribution functions, from which the duration of the stageswas derived. Isochronal development was confirmed for most stages.However, the first feeding naupliar stage, as well as the lastcopepodite stage (CV), took longer in most species, whereasthe pre-feeding naupliar stages had a shorter duration, particularlyin P.elongatus. Differences betweensexes were not apparent.Contradicting results among cultures and with published resultsbyother workers suggest that part of the observed deviation fromnear-isochronal development may be due to the culture conditions.  相似文献

Seeds of Chenopodium album L. were buried under field and controlledconditions. The germination capacity of these seeds was testedover a range of conditions at regular intervals. Seed buriedin the field only showed small seasonal changes in germinationcapacity when tested at constant temperatures in incubators.However, when germination was tested at field temperatures,seasonal changes in germination were more obvious. Nitrate andlight always promoted germination. There was a strong positiveinteraction between the effects of the two factors. When nitrateand light were combined, exhumed seeds germinated over a muchlonger period of the year than in water with or without light.Desiccation only stimulated under particular conditions, forexample, when germination was tested in nitrate in darkness.A regression model was developed with the data from the germinationtests in incubators. The model describes the changes in dormancyand germination and estimates germination at field temperaturesaccurately throughout the year. Incubation temperature determines sex in the mugger crocodile,Crocodylus palustris. Exclusively females are produced at constanttemperatures of 28.0°C through 31°C. At 32.5°C,only males are produced. Both sexes are produced in varyingproportions at 31.5, 32.0, and 33.0°C. Embryo survival isnot affected within this range, but developmental rate and totalincubation time are strongly temperature dependent. In naturalnests laid in breeding enclosures, cool incubation temperaturesproduced only females whereas males were produced only in warmnests. Clutch sex ratios were female or male biased. Yearlysex ratios (=percent male) varied from 0.05 to 0.58; overallsex ratio during six nesting seasons was 0.24 (1 male: 3 females).Sex ratio and incubation time vary with nest location and temperaturein a manner consistent with the constant temperature results.Incubation time decreases with increasing incubation temperature,and is an accurate predictor of sex ratio in the field and laboratory. To date, temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) has beenreported in five species of Crocodylus and in three speciesof Alligatorinae; but the TSD patterns in these groups differ.The TSD pattern of C. palustris is similar to that of C. porosus.Nesting in C. palustris is synchronized with the seasonal availabilityof thermal regimes suitable for incubation. Resultant sex ratiosare a consequence of when and where eggs are laid. Early nestsare located in warm, sunny sites; in contrast, late season nestsare located in the shade. An egg transplant experiment demonstratedthat sex ratios could be altered by simple manipulations ofnest temperatures in the field. The adaptive significance ofTSD in crocodilians may relate to the influence of incubationtemperature on various hatchling attributes, particularly growth.  相似文献

南京地区棉铃虫Heliclverpa armigera (Hubner)越冬蛹滞育的解除时间及解除后发育与温度的关系等问题。结果表明,该地区越冬蛹于12月中旬前后解除滞育,12月下旬至3月上旬处于休眠状态,3月下旬至4月上旬温度上升至约10℃~12℃后眼点开始移动。发现该虫在滞育后的发育中,眼点移动前期的发育速率、发育起始温度及血淋巴总蛋白含量动态明显不同于眼点移动后期或非滞育蛹。  相似文献

Multiple internal and external tagging experiments tested the applicability of five back-calculation models (Biological Intercept, Modified-Fry, Body Proportional Hypothesis, Time-Varying Growth, and an Age-Effects model) as predictors of individual growth trajectories of two marine cleaning gobies, Elacatinus evelynae and E. prochilos, that were raised in aquaria under conditions that resulted in variable growth. Mixed-effect model analyses of longitudinal records of otoliths and somatic growth collected at the individual level revealed that E. evelynae and E. prochilos produced daily increments on their otoliths for up to two months post-settlement and that the Modified-Fry model provided the most accurate size-at-age estimates despite the presence of age, growth and time-varying growth effects in the dataset. Very large errors in predicted size were produced by the Age-Effects model. The four other back-calculation models all provided slightly biased estimates of back-calculated size-at-age, with the Modified-Fry model providing the least biased estimates. Regardless of bias, both experimental and theoretical evidence indicated that back-calculated size was a better proxy of fish length than otoliths radius. Relationships between fish length and otoliths radius were allometric at the level of individuals, which explained why the Modified-Fry model performed better. However, this allometry was undetectable at the population level. This study represents the first attempt to validate modern back-calculation models using longitudinal data collected and analysed at the individual level. Our results suggest the use of the Modified-Fry model as a conservative approach in routine back-calculations of fish size at age from otoliths.  相似文献

The development of primary root nodules on the field bean (Viciafaba L.) grown at 10 and 18 °C was examined. The sequenceof anatomical changes observed was the same in both temperatureregimes. Nodules developed much more slowly at 10 °C andthe nodules were much larger when corresponding anatomical changesoccurred. Primary root nodules eventually ceased growth in bothtemperature regimes but ultimate nodule volume was nearly twiceas great as 10 °C as at 18 °C. The larger size did notcompensate for the lower specific nitrogenase activity of cold-grownnodules: nitrogen fixation (acetylene reduction) rates on awhole plant basis were much lower at 10 °C than at 18 °C.There was no difference in the total number of primary rootnodules in the two temperature regimes but their distributionwas biased towards the upper part of the root and the epicotylat 18 °C. Apical senescence was examined in a range of intact and defloweredflowering genotypes under both long and short photoperiods.The flower inhibitor produced by the gene Sn, appears to havea direct effect on apical senescence since it can delay apicalsenescence under short day conditions in the absence of flowerand fruit development or where the rate of such developmentis the same in different treatments. Gene Hr can magnify thiseffect. Gene E, on the other hand, appears to influence apicalsenescence only indirectly through the effect it has on flowerand fruit development. The flowering genes at the If, sn andhr loci are also thought to have indirect effects on apicalsenescence. Even in deflowered plants apical senescence appearsto occur eventually in continuous light in all genotypes testedindicating that the presence of developing fruits, althoughpromotory, is not essential for apical senescence. Two versions of a stage-structured model of Cirsium vulgare population dynamics were developed. Both incorporated density dependence at one stage in the life cycle of the plant. In version 1 density dependence was assumed to operate during germination whilst in version 2 it was included at the seedling stage. Density-dependent parameter values for the model were estimated from annual census data in a factorial grazing experiment. Version 1 of the model produced significant estimates of density dependence under field conditions. The estimated values, when included in a simulation of the dynamics, produced two-point limit cycles under conditions of hard grazing. The limit cycles were most pronounced at the early rosette stage. Comparison of the effects of density dependence at the two different stages in the life cycle revealed a strong difference in predicted dynamics. This emphasizes the importance of determining where density dependence operates under field conditions and the potential problems of arbitrarily assigning it to particular life-history stages. Version 1 of the model produced a good prediction of observed mean plant density across the different grazing treatments (r 2=0.81, P<0.001).  相似文献

Aeluropus lagopoides(Linn.) Trin. Ex Thw. (Poaceae) is a perennialgrass distributed from coastal Sindh and Balochistan to salineflats of Punjab, Pakistan. Seeds collected from an inland populationofA. lagopoides located on the University of Karachi campuswere germinated under various levels of salinity (0, 100, 200,300, 400 and 500 m M NaCl) and temperature regimes (10/20, 15/25,20/30 and 25/35 °C) in a 12 h dark/12 h light photoperiod.Highest germination was obtained under non-saline conditions,and an increase in NaCl concentration progressively inhibitedgermination. Inhibition of germination was greater at coolertemperatures (10/20 °C) when no seed germinated above aconcentration of 300 m M NaCl. The germination response at moderatetemperatures (20/30 °C) was optimal, with 30% of seeds germinatingin 500 m M NaCl. The rate of germination decreased as salinityincreased. Germination rate was highest at 20/30 °C andlowest at 10/20 °C. Seeds were transferred from salt solutionsto distilled water after 20 d and those from high salinitiesrecovered quickly at warmer temperatures with an optimal responseat 20/30 °C. A simulation study illustrates the effects of the inclusion of half-sib pairs as well as the effects of selective genotyping on the power of detection and the parameter estimates in a sib pair analysis of data from an outbred population. The power of QTL detection obtained from samples of sib pairs selected according to their within family variance or according to the mean within family variance within half sib family was compared and contrasted with the power obtained when only full sib pair analysis was used. There was an increase in power (4–16%) and decrease in the bias of parameter estimates with the use of half-sib information. These improvements in power and parameter estimates depended on the number of the half sib pairs (half sib family size). Almost the same power as that obtained using all the available sib pairs could be achieved by selecting only 50–60% the animals. The most effective method was to select both full and half sib pairs on the basis of high within full sib family variance for the trait in question. The QTL position estimates were in general slightly biased towards the center of the chromosome and the QTL variance estimates were biased upwards, there being quite large differences in bias depending on the selection method.  相似文献
