We used RAPDs (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNAs) to investigate genetic diversity and its partition within and between three populations of Iris aphylla in Poland. Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA) of 84 distinct RAPD multiband genotypes revealed higher variation within populations (77.2%) than genetic differentiation between them (22.8%, P  < 0.002). Values of genetic diversity indices ( H ) were similar in all three sites (0.21–0.24). The differentiation of the populations corresponded to low average gene flow ( Nm  = 0.81). Our results indicated that genetic diversity was independent of population size. We concluded that although sexual reproduction and gene flow between populations of I. aphylla were very limited, they preserved high levels of genetic diversity. Relatively large number of seeds, which migrated in the past to populations, as well as patterns of reproduction and life history of I. aphylla may explain this situation.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 142 , 65–72.  相似文献

Trade-offs between reproduction and survival are important determinants of life-history characteristics of lizards. Organisms cannot increase the allocation of limited resources to reproduction without diverting a proportional amount of energy from another trait. Locomotor performance is an ecologically relevant trait that potentially influences survival by affecting the ability to escape from predators. Most studies have used female lizards as subjects because pregnancy is known to reduce their locomotor abilities, whereas little is known on costs of reproduction in males. In this study we suggest that in males of the lizard Lacerta monticola reproductive investment in morphological traits that confer dominance (i.e. head size) might lead to a low probability of survival by decreasing investment in other traits that affect locomotor performance (i.e. limb symmetry). We staged laboratory agonistic encounters between males and measured their morphology and burst speed on a race track to examine possible relationships between morphology, social dominance and locomotor capacity. Our results indicate that social dominance was positively related to relative head height, and that escape speed was negatively related to levels of fluctuating asymmetry in femur length, but also negatively related to relative head height. Males with greater relative head height also had more asymmetrical femurs, thus dominant males suffered a decrease in locomotor performance. Males with higher heads tend to dominate male–male interactions and hence may gain access to reproductive females, thus increasing their current reproduction success. However, this might occur at the expense of future survivorship mediated by a decrease in escape speed. Apomixis is a very common characteristic in vascular plants. It occurs in two general forms: either subversion of the sexual system (agamospermous seeds or apogamous sporophytes in non-seed plants) or vegetative reproduction. In this communication, only the mutational consequences of vegetative reproduction are considered. Vegetative reproduction involves the replication of apical meristems, especially shoot apical meristems. Three general types of shoot apical meristems occur in the vascular plants: single tetrahedral apical initial, unstratified with impermanent initials and stratified with impermanent initials. Each meristem type has different consequences with regard to mutation, diplontic selection and the possibility of mutational meltdown.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London. A common-garden experiment was conducted on larvae to test for genetic differences in body shape among populations of Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ). Offspring from four north-west Atlantic regions were reared from hatching to postmetamorphosis at two temperatures (7 ± 1 °C and 11 ± 1 °C) and two food levels (1500 and 4500 prey L−1). Body shape differed between populations and treatments. Population differences were greatest between south-west Scotian Shelf cod and those further north; the former were characterized by a deeper body, larger head, and longer caudal peduncle than cod from the other populations. Significant differences were also observed between two putative populations on the south-west Scotian Shelf, suggesting genetic divergence between spawning aggregations at small spatial scales (< 100 km). Temperature and food supply also influenced body shape, with the effect of the former being more pronounced. Individuals reared at the higher temperature or food level had a deeper body and a larger head than those reared at the lower temperature or food supply. Phenotypic responses to changes in the rearing environment also differed among populations, indicating genetic differences in phenotypic plasticity. Differences between populations in morphology and in phenotypic plasticity suggest genetic divergence at both large (> 1000 km) and small (< 100 km) spatial scales. The genetic differences at large spatial scales counteracted the expected effects of temperature differences in the wild, suggesting countergradient variation in morphology among these populations.  © 2006 Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada. Three populations of the orchid species Cephalanthera rubra localized on neighbouring mineral islands in the Biebrza National Park (north-east Poland) were examined using 16 allozyme loci. The percentage of polymorphic loci in these C. rubra populations ranged from 25 to 31.3% and the mean number of alleles per polymorphic locus from 1.25 to 1.31. The levels of observed heterozygosity at polymorphic loci were higher than expected for all populations. The overabundance of heterozygotes was noted in every population. The values of fixation indices were highly negative. The genetic differentiation among the three populations was small ( F ST = 0.0173), albeit statistically significant ( P  < 0.001). The level of gene flow varied from 13 to 16. Fourteen multilocus genotypes were found among the 401 ramets sampled from the populations. Only four of them were common for all populations. The frequency of genotypes was different in these three populations of C. rubra . Some of the multilocus genotypes dominated in the given populations, others were found sporadically. Genetic variation within C. rubra populations is mainly the result of small population sizes and reflects the influences of breeding system and type of reproduction. Larvae of the sutchi catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus were collected during peak downstream drift in the Lower Mekong river on four occasions over an 8-week period during the 2003 spawning season, and genotyped using seven microsatellite loci. We provide evidence for several heterogeneous groups within and among the temporally discrete larval peak samples. Strong evidence for a significant deficit of heterozygotes was observed for each larval sample and the pooled sample, possibly due to population admixture. Although individual-based assignment tests suggested that each larval peak sample was admixed, significant but low genetic differentiation was observed among larval samples ( F ST = 0.0052, P  < 0.01). The lack of significant relatedness confirms the multifamily composition of each larval group, excluding family bias to explain the observed genetic heterogeneity. Both the entire larval peak and each temporally separated larval peak originated from spawning groups with heterogeneous allelic composition involving several distinct spawning events. We propose three explanations to account for our findings: (1) the ecological match/mismatch hypothesis; (2) the genetic 'sweepstakes' selection hypothesis; and (3) life-history-specific characteristics of the spawning populations. Research on life-history traits of squamate reptiles has focused on North American species, while Asian taxa have been virtually ignored. In order to understand general patterns in reptile life histories, we need a broader data base. Our study on the slender-bodied lacertid lizard Takydromus septentrionalis provides the first detailed information on factors responsible for intraspecific variation in reproductive output and life history in a Chinese reptile. Clutches of recently collected lizards from five widely separated localities in China revealed major divergences in female body size at maturation, mean adult female body size, body condition after oviposition, size-adjusted fecundity, relative clutch mass, and mass and shape of eggs. Most of these geographical differences persisted when the same groups of females were maintained in identical conditions in captivity. Additionally, reproductive frequency during maintenance under laboratory conditions differed according to the animals' place of origin. Thus, the extensive geographical variation in reproductive and life-history traits that occurs within T. septentrionalis is exhibited even in long-term captives, suggesting that proximate factors that vary among localities (local conditions of weather and food supply) are less important determinants of life-history variation than are intrinsic (presumably genetic) influences. In many salamanders, most aspects of reproduction coincide with seasonal changes in abiotic factors such as temperature and humidity. However, while these reproductive patterns have been well documented for temperate salamanders, detailed data for tropical species are relatively sparse. I used histological techniques to examine temporal variation in the spermatogenetic cycles of four species of Guatemalan bolitoglossine salamanders ( Bolitoglossa occidentalis , B. rostrata , Dendrotriton bromeliacia and Pseudoeurycea goebeli ) from different microhabitats along an elevational gradient. All four species have mature sperm present in the testis throughout the year, irrespective of patterns of courtship and egg-laying. Additionally, the two species from more seasonal habitats ( B. occidentalis and B. rostrata ) exhibit significant but cryptic levels of variation in the amount of spermatozoa present in the testis not detectable by external appearance or the presence of secondary sexual characteristics. For the two species from less seasonal cloud forests ( D. bromeliacia and P. goebeli ), there were no detectable patterns to variation within the testis. Sexual dimorphism is usually interpreted in terms of reproductive adaptations, but the degree of sex divergence also may be affected by sex-based niche partitioning. In gape-limited animals like snakes, the degree of sexual dimorphism in body size (SSD) or relative head size can determine the size spectrum of ingestible prey for each sex. Our studies of one mainland and four insular Western Australian populations of carpet pythons ( Morelia spilota ) reveal remarkable geographical variation in SSD, associated with differences in prey resources available to the snakes. In all five populations, females grew larger than males and had larger heads relative to body length. However, the populations differed in mean body sizes and relative head sizes, as well as in the degree of sexual dimorphism in these traits. Adult males and females also diverged strongly in dietary composition: males consumed small prey (lizards, mice and small birds), while females took larger mammals such as possums and wallabies. Geographic differences in the availability of large mammalian prey were linked to differences in mean adult body sizes of females (the larger sex) and thus contributed to sex-based resource partitioning. For example, in one population adult male snakes ate mice and adult females ate wallabies; in another, birds and lizards were important prey types for both sexes. The circumarctic clonal plant Saxifraga cernua reproduces efficiently via bulbils, largely depends on insects for pollination and appears to set seed very rarely. However, high levels of genotypic variation observed at small spatial scales in the arctic archipelago of Svalbard have been taken as evidence of occasional sexual reproduction. Here we assess the relative contributions of mutation and recombination to random amplified polymorphic DNA variation in four populations in East Greenland and re-analyse the Svalbard data. Greater variation due to recombination was predicted in Greenland than in Svalbard, because the higher summer temperatures and longer growing season likely increase the chances for sexual reproduction. Although we observed higher levels of genotypic diversity in Greenland than in Svalbard, matrix incompatibility and linkage disequilibrium measures provided no evidence of more sexuality, suggesting differences in glacial/postglacial history. The genetic structure and spatial distribution of clones suggest that clonal migration may increase variability in local populations, which is consistent with frequent large-scale migration in this species inferred from a circumarctic analysis of chloroplast DNA haplotypes. We conclude that a combination of somatic mutations and sexual reproduction has contributed to the observed patterns of genotypic diversity in the Greenland and Svalbard populations of S. cernua , and that sexual reproduction is important in maintaining genotypic diversity, despite the rarity of observations of seed setting.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 152 , 209–217.  相似文献

We studied fluctuating asymmetry and feather growth rates as indicators of fitness of blackcaps ( Sylvia atricapilla ) breeding at the border of their distribution range in the Iberian Peninsula. Iberian blackcaps increase their abundance with increasing rainfall and ground cover of brambles. In border habitats, they are sedentary and morphologically different from migrants, suggesting that they could be adapted to peripheral conditions. We tested whether juvenile body condition depends on (1) distance from the centre of the range, (2) mean precipitation or (3) bramble cover. Controlling for environmental variation, we tested for differences between migratory and sedentary populations. Body condition varied across the Iberian gradient in parallel with changes in precipitation. Controlling for this effect, sedentary populations were in better body condition than migratory populations. Our results support the idea that environmental heterogeneity causes fitness to fluctuate across species' ranges, and also that local adaptation may mean that peripheral populations are more than a 'tail end' of the species.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London . Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 78 , 479–488.  相似文献

Migratory birds have less time for moulting than sedentary birds, which may force them to produce their feathers faster at the expense of reducing feather quality. However, the effects of migration on the trade-off between moult speed and plumage quality remain to be studied in natural populations. We analysed the relationship between growth rate and quality of individual feathers, taking advantage of natural variation between migratory and sedentary populations of blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla . As predicted by life-history theory, individual blackcaps showed variable individual quality, which was revealed by positive correlations between feather growth rate and feather mass within populations. However, migrants grew up their feathers faster, producing lighter feathers than sedentary blackcaps. These results support the idea that feather growth rate and feather quality are traded against each other in blackcaps. Most studies of the genetic structure of Atlantic cod have focused on small geographical scales. In the present study, the genetic structure of cod sampled on spawning grounds in the North Atlantic was examined using eight microsatellite loci and the Pan I locus. A total of 954 cod was collected from nine different regions: the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the Celtic Sea, the Irish Sea and Icelandic waters during spring 2002 and spring 2003, from Norwegian waters and the Faroe Islands (North and West spawning grounds) in spring 2003, and from Canadian waters in 1998. Temporal stability among spawning grounds was observed in Icelandic waters and the Celtic Sea, and no significant difference was observed between the samples from the Baltic Sea and between the samples from Faroese waters. F -statistics showed significant differences between most populations and a pattern of isolation-by-distance was described with microsatellite loci. The Pan I locus revealed the presence of two genetically distinguishable basins, the North-west Atlantic composed of the Icelandic and Canadian samples and the North-east Atlantic composed of all other samples. Permutation of allele sizes at each microsatellite locus among allelic states supported a mutational component to the genetic differentiation, indicating a historical origin of the observed variation. The evolutionary importance of cryptic taxa is well documented, yet few studies have examined them with a view to conservation. In the present study, the significance of cryptic speciation in freshwater crabs is examined. Allozyme and 16S rRNA sequence data were used to explore the degree of population differentiation between mountain stream populations of two distinct freshwater crab species. Marked patterns of differentiation were evident among populations; those in close geographical proximity were characterized by the fixation of alternate alleles at certain loci, indicating that currently there is no gene flow among populations. Both allozyme and sequence data provide evidence for the recognition of at least five distinct evolutionary lineages with pronounced levels of genetic differentiation. Morphometric data failed to detect any distinct geographically intermediate population groupings. We resurveyed an elevational transect in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park first sampled in 1947 for chromosomal polymorphisms in populations of Drosophila robusta . Combining these results with those from previous surveys, unpublished data, and long-term meteorological data from this region up to 2003, we found that these chromosomal polymorphisms had continued to shift in frequency consistent with long-term temperature changes, yet had maintained elevational clines. Intensity of linkage disequilibrium for X-chromosome gene arrangements had shifted up and down the transect over the 56-year sampling period, suggesting shifting patterns of adaptation. Chromosomal frequency changes through the 1980s clearly demonstrated concerted directional evolution in response to cooler temperatures, but over the 20 years until 2003, frequency changes in most high-elevation populations reversed for many of the most temperature-sensitive gene arrangements.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 131–141.  相似文献

Morphological and genetic analyses of Eonycteris spelaea from 15 islands along the Banda Arc, from Sumatra to Timor and including Kalimantan and Sulawesi, revealed considerable divergence between islands and geographical patterning. On the basis of both morphology and genetics, the populations on the large islands of Greater Sunda (Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan and Sulawesi) are generally distinct from one another and from those on the islands in Nusa Tenggara (Lombok to Timor), which form a more cohesive cluster. These differences may be the result of the Nusa Tenggara populations having been colonized more recently than those on the Greater Sunda, and probably from a single source. All biological measures of the relationships between island populations are positively associated with the extent of the sea-crossing between them, indicating the sea is an important barrier to movement. Multivariate analyses show the presence of a marked trend for body size to increase from west to east. However, individuals from Kalimantan are not consistent with this trend, being smaller than predicted, and on the two outer Banda Arc islands of Sumba and Timor animals are a little larger than predicted from the longitudinal trend. These differences could be due to the relative isolation of these populations or differing environmental conditions. There is also a negative relationship between body size and island area, but this is confounded by the longitudinal trend.
