This paper examines the role of body fat distribution as measured by waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) on the judgment of women’s physical attractiveness. It presents evidence that WHR is correlated with a woman’s reproductive endocrinological status and long-term health risk. Three studies were conducted to investigate whether humans have perceptual and cognitive mechanisms to utilize the WHR to infer attributes of women’s health, youthfulness, attractiveness, and reproductive capacity. College-age as well as older subjects of both sexes rank female figures with normal weight and low WHR as attractive and assign to them higher reproductive capability. The study concludes that WHR is a reliable and honest signal of a woman’s reproductive potential. The adaptive significance of body fat distribution and its role in mate selection is also discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents our efforts to explain why mammals have large thigh muscles while insects have small ones. After a discussion of this observation a definition of body foot ratio is defined which describes how animals stand and how their legs are arranged. To investigate the mechanics, we present a closed optimum solution of the body foot ratio for a 2D two-leg walking machine. A multi-walker is used as a case for 3D general analysis, and the numerical simulation is presented. Both 2D and 3D case studies can explain the above observations of mammals and insects. These findings can also be used as a guide for the design of man-made limbed machines.  相似文献

Background/Objectives

Physiological evidence indicates that high-protein diets reduce caloric intake and increase thermogenic response, which may prevent weight gain and regain after weight loss. Clinical trials have shown such effects, whereas observational cohort studies suggest an association between greater protein intake and weight gain. In both types of studies the results are based on average weight changes, and show considerable diversity in both directions. This study investigates whether the discrepancy in the evidence could be due to recruitment of overweight and obese individuals into clinical trials.

Subjects/Methods

Data were available from the European Diet, Obesity and Genes (DiOGenes) post-weight-loss weight-maintenance trial and the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health (DCH) cohort. Participants of the DCH cohort were matched with participants from the DiOGenes trial on gender, diet, and body characteristics. Different subsets of the DCH-participants, comparable with the trial participants, were analyzed for weight maintenance according to the randomization status (high or low protein) of the matched trial participants.

Results

Trial participants were generally heavier, had larger waist circumference and larger fat mass than the participants in the entire DCH cohort. A better weight maintenance in the high-protein group compared to the low protein group was observed in the subgroups of the DCH cohort matching body characteristics of the trial participants.

Conclusion

This modified observational study, minimized the differences between the RCT and observational data with regard to dietary intake, participant characteristics and statistical analysis. Compared with low protein diet the high protein diet was associated with better weight maintenance when individuals with greater body mass index and waist circumference were analyzed. Selecting subsets of large-scale observational cohort studies with similar characteristics as participants in clinical trials may reconcile the otherwise conflicting results.  相似文献

We study Body Mass Index (BMI) changes among immigrants from Iran, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and Vietnam relative to native Norwegians in Oslo. We assess the effect of acculturation on BMI changes. We hypothesize that acculturation reduces the gap of BMIs between natives and immigrants. Acculturation is measured by immigrants’ language skills. Our data come from two surveys in Oslo 2000–2002. Weights and heights were measured at the surveys; participants were asked to recall weights when they were 25 years old. Norwegian language skills and socio-economic data were collected. Our findings support our hypothesis. Acculturation, as measured by proficiency in the Norwegian language, has the predicted effects on BMI changes. We do not find any effect of immigrants’ time of residency on BMI changes.  相似文献

What is the ideal body size and shape that we want for ourselves and our partners? What are the important physical features in this ideal? And do both genders agree on what is an attractive body? To answer these questions we used a 3D interactive software system which allows our participants to produce a photorealistic, virtual male or female body. Forty female and forty male heterosexual Caucasian observers (females mean age 19.10 years, s.d. 1.01; 40 males mean age 19.84, s.d. 1.66) set their own ideal size and shape, and the size and shape of their ideal partner using the DAZ studio image manipulation programme. In this programme the shape and size of a 3D body can be altered along 94 independent dimensions, allowing each participant to create the exact size and shape of the body they want. The volume (and thus the weight assuming a standard density) and the circumference of the bust, waist and hips of these 3D models can then be measured. The ideal female body set by women (BMI = 18.9, WHR = 0.70, WCR = 0.67) was very similar to the ideal partner set by men, particularly in their BMI (BMI = 18.8, WHR = 0.73, WCR = 0.69). This was a lower BMI than the actual BMI of 39 of the 40 women. The ideal male body set by the men (BMI = 25.9, WHR = 0.87, WCR = 0.74) was very similar to the ideal partner set by the women (BMI = 24.5, WHR = 0.86, WCR = 0.77). This was a lower BMI than the actual BMI of roughly half of the men and a higher BMI than the other half. The results suggest a consistent preference for an ideal male and female body size and shape across both genders. The results also suggest that both BMI and torso shape are important components for the creation of the ideal body.  相似文献

Background

Body image satisfaction (BIS) influences body weight regulation and may contribute to long-term healthier lifestyle after pregnancy. Thus, we aimed to assess the association between BIS before pregnancy and body mass index (BMI) 4 years after the index pregnancy.

Methods

As part of the follow-up of a birth cohort, 3612 women with prepregnancy BMI >18.5 kg/m2 were reevaluated 4 years after the birth of a child. BIS was defined as the difference between perceived and ideal body size before pregnancy, assessed by Stunkard Silhouettes after birth. The associations of BIS with BMI change (continuous) and BMI classes at 4 years, based on measured weight and height, were estimated using linear and multinomial regression, respectively.

Results

Among women with normal prepregnancy BMI, those who felt too small, regarding their ideal, had a 0.25 kg/m2 smaller increase in BMI within 4 years and a lower likelihood of becoming overweight or obese [multivariate-adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 0.63; 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 0.44–0.91 and OR = 0.21; 95%CI: 0.05–0.91, respectively) than those satisfied with body image. Feeling too large was associated with a 0.41 kg/m2 larger increase in BMI and a higher risk of becoming overweight or obese (OR = 2.12; 95%CI:1.73–2.59 and OR = 3.42; 95%CI:2.02–5.79, respectively). A similar, non-significant, trend was observed for overweight women. Obese women who felt too large had a non-significant decrease in BMI.

Conclusions

BIS plays a role in maternal body weight after delivery. Realistic body size goals may promote the motivation to lose weight and contribute to higher success in attaining them.  相似文献

Sesarmops intermedium de Haan (1835) is a semi-terrestrial crab inhabiting the areas around a forest creek at Heng-chun Peninsula in southern Taiwan. Small and large individuals excavate tunnels near the waterline, while those individuals with medium body size are more distant from the water. This unusual distribution pattern might reflect the habitat preference related to physiological requirement of crabs with different body sizes. In natural conditions, the animals keep their haemolymph osmolality at a relatively low level near those of fully-rehydrated individuals. In dehydrated conditions, the haemolymph osmolality of the animal was much higher and was negatively related to the body size. Both the rates of water loss and uptake decrease with increasing body size. While, both the potential time exposed in air and the rehydration time increase with increasing body size. The low water loss rate of large individuals may prolong the potential time exposed in air, but this advantage may be offset by their low efficiency in water uptake simultaneously. Small crabs, with a high water uptake rate and a small amount of water requirement, may have a shorter time needed for rehydration. However, those small crabs, smaller than about 2 g in living weight, due to their extremely fast loss of body water, have to access water more frequently and thus have a lower potential for terrestrial activity also. For medium sized crabs, the advantages of high water uptake rate, less water requirement and better ability to utilize interstitial water may allow them to emancipate from the water body. Due to the constraints of performance in water balance, the optimum size for extending terrestrial activity of S. intermedium is below 14 g in weight (=28.5 mm in carapace width) at which the crabs may have a higher potential for terrestrial activity. In the terrestrial adaptation regarding the water balance of S. intermedium, how to increase water uptake efficiency and the capability to use various interstitial water on land seem to be more important than how to reduce the water loss rate. Large body size and hence the low water loss rate may not be always advantageous for the terrestrial adaptation of S. intermedium and possibly other crustaceans.  相似文献

α-Synuclein is a small presynaptic protein implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinson disease. Nevertheless, its physiological roles and mechanisms remain incompletely understood. α-Synuclein is not only expressed in neurons but also in the vascular endothelium, which contains intracellular granules called Weibel-Palade bodies (WPBs) that contain a number of chemokines, adhesive molecules, and inflammatory cytokines. This study explored whether the exocytosis of WPB is regulated by α-synuclein. Phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate-, thrombin-, or forskolin-induced von Willebrand factor release or translocation of P-selectin from endothelial cells were inhibited by α- and β-synuclein but not γ-synuclein. Three point mutants (A30P, A53T, and E46K) found in familial Parkinson disease also inhibited WPB exocytosis similar to that of wild-type α-synuclein. Furthermore, the negative regulation of WPB exocytosis required the N terminus or the nonamyloid β-component of Alzheimer disease amyloid region of α-synuclein, but not the C-terminal acidic tail, and α-synuclein affected WPB exocytosis through interference with RalA activation by enhancing the interaction of RalGDS-β-arrestin complexes. Immuno-EM analysis revealed that α-synuclein was localized close to WPBs. These findings imply that α-synuclein plays as a negative regulator in WPB exocytosis in endothelial cells.  相似文献

According to the National Academy of Sciences, biology students in the USA are not being adequately prepared for successful futures. Of paramount concern is a lack of sufficient training in quantitative and computational skills, which are needed to compete effectively for an array of educational and occupational opportunities. In this paper, we introduce a classroom exercise that invites students to solve a simple biological problem and illustrates the need for a computer-assisted strategy to arrive at a solution. The exercise invites students to consider the question “How old are the parts of your body?” Some features of the human body are more ancient than others. For example, our bodies have both hair and backbones, but backbones arose much earlier in evolutionary history. Our exercise relies upon MEGA 4.0, a free, visually appealing, and intuitive computer program that allows students to gather DNA or protein sequences from electronic databases, then use them to infer phylogenetic trees. Student-inferred phylogenies are used to explore the relative order in which diverse aspects of the human form evolved. In the process, students are trained to use powerful features of MEGA and encouraged through group discussion to consider additional applications of the technology they have learned. Our lesson plan includes a brief video, a web site with essential terminology and links for further exploration, a hands-on experience using MEGA, and a follow-up discussion.  相似文献

To estimate the body temperature (BT) of seven dinosaurs Gillooly, Alleen, and Charnov (2006) used an equation that predicts BT from the body mass and maximum growth rate (MGR) with the latter preserved in ontogenetic growth trajectories (BT-equation). The results of these authors evidence inertial homeothermy in Dinosauria and suggest that, due to overheating, the maximum body size in Dinosauria was ultimately limited by BT. In this paper, I revisit this hypothesis of Gillooly, Alleen, and Charnov (2006). I first studied whether BTs derived from the BT-equation of today’s crocodiles, birds and mammals are consistent with core temperatures of animals. Second, I applied the BT-equation to a larger number of dinosaurs than Gillooly, Alleen, and Charnov (2006) did. In particular, I estimated BT of Archaeopteryx (from two MGRs), ornithischians (two), theropods (three), prosauropods (three), and sauropods (nine). For extant species, the BT value estimated from the BT-equation was a poor estimate of an animal’s core temperature. For birds, BT was always strongly overestimated and for crocodiles underestimated; for mammals the accuracy of BT was moderate. I argue that taxon-specific differences in the scaling of MGR (intercept and exponent of the regression line, log-log-transformed) and in the parameterization of the Arrhenius model both used in the BT-equation as well as ecological and evolutionary adaptations of species cause these inaccuracies. Irrespective of the found inaccuracy of BTs estimated from the BT-equation and contrary to the results of Gillooly, Alleen, and Charnov (2006) I found no increase in BT with increasing body mass across all dinosaurs (Sauropodomorpha, Sauropoda) studied. This observation questions that, due to overheating, the maximum size in Dinosauria was ultimately limited by BT. However, the general high inaccuracy of dinosaurian BTs derived from the BT-equation makes a reliable test of whether body size in dinosaurs was ultimately limited by overheating impossible.  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of body mass index (BMI) as a predictor of body fat in elderly women. Research Methods and Procedures: A total of 1423 women aged 67 ± 5 (mean ± SD, range: 60 to 88) years were consecutively enrolled into the study. Fat mass (FM) was measured using DXA. Results: BMI explained 72.9% of FM variance (p < 0.0001), with a root mean square error of estimate (RMSE) of 3.5 kg. After standardization of RMSE on the dependent variable as RMSE%, the prediction error equaled 15%. BMI explained 54.8% of FM% variance (p < 0.0001), with an RMSE of 4.1%, corresponding to an RMSE% of 11%. Discussion: The relatively high RMSE% of the FM and FM%‐BMI associations caution against the use of BMI as an adiposity index in individual elderly women. However, an error corresponding to 11% of FM% may be accepted for population studies of body fat in elderly women.  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the relative merits of BMI (kilograms per meter squared) and age‐ and gender‐adjusted BMI, age‐ and gender‐specific z score of BMI, and age‐ and gender‐specific percentiles of BMI as surrogate measures of body fatness among a sample of youth. Research Methods and Procedures: The sample comprised 596 children and adolescents 5 to 18.7 years old and was 40% male and 55% white. Height and weight were measured by trained research staff. DXA was used to determine body fat mass. BMI, age‐ and gender‐specific percentile of BMI, and age‐ and gender‐specific z scores of BMI were computed, and these metrics were compared with measured body fatness. Results: The BMI values in the sample ranged from 12.9 to 55.0 kg/m2, with a mean of 24.9 kg/m2. The Spearman correlations with percentage body fat were similar for all of the BMI metrics (r = 0.82 to 0.88). Linear regression models with age‐ and gender‐specific percentiles of BMI explained significantly less of the variance (65%) than models with log‐transformed BMI (81%) or age‐ and gender‐specific z scores of BMI (75% to 79%). z scores were the most accurate at classifying children who were overfat (sensitivity = 0.84, specificity = 0.96 for z score ≥1). However, using a BMI ≥85th percentile or a BMI ≥20 kg/m2 was also accurate at classifying youth. Discussion: The BMI metrics had similar correlations with body fatness, but age‐ and gender‐specific percentiles of BMI were the least accurate proxy measure of body fatness. However, a BMI z score ≥1, BMI percentile ≥85, and BMI ≥20 kg/m2 are all useful for identifying children who may be overfat.  相似文献

The histopathological hallmark of Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the presence of fibrillar aggregates referred to as Lewy bodies (LBs), in which α-synuclein is a major constituent. Pale bodies, the precursors of LBs, may serve the material for that LBs continue to expand. LBs consist of a heterogeneous mixture of more than 90 molecules, including PD-linked gene products (α-synuclein, DJ-1, LRRK2, parkin, and PINK-1), mitochondria-related proteins, and molecules implicated in the ubiquitin–proteasome system, autophagy, and aggresome formation. LB formation has been considered to be a marker for neuronal degeneration because neuronal loss is found in the predilection sites for LBs. However, recent studies have indicated that nonfibrillar α-synuclein is cytotoxic and that fibrillar aggregates of α-synuclein (LBs and pale bodies) may represent a cytoprotective mechanism in PD.  相似文献

The N-terminal proline-rich domain of γ-zein (Zera) plays an important role in protein body (PB) formation not only in the original host (maize seeds) but in a broad spectrum of eukaryotic cells. However, the elements within the Zera sequence that are involved in the biogenesis of PBs have not been clearly identified. Here, we focused on amino acid sequence motifs that could be involved in Zera oligomerization, leading to PB-like structures in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves. By using fusions of Zera with fluorescent proteins, we found that the lack of the repeat region (PPPVHL)8 of Zera resulted in the secretion of the fusion protein but that this repeat by itself did not form PBs. Although the repeat region containing eight units was the most efficient for Zera self-assembly, shorter repeats of 4–6 units still formed small multimers. Based on site-directed mutagenesis of Zera cysteine residues and analysis of multimer formation, we conclude that the two N-terminal Cys residues of Zera (Cys7 and Cys9) are critical for oligomerization. Immunoelectron microscopy and confocal studies on PB development over time revealed that early, small, Zera-derived oligomers were sequestered in buds along the rough ER and that the mature size of the PBs could be attained by both cross-linking of preformed multimers and the incorporation of new chains of Zera fusions synthesized by active membrane-bound ribosomes. Based on these results and on the behavior of the Zera structure determined by molecular dynamics simulation studies, we propose a model of Zera-induced PB biogenesis.  相似文献

At the macroevolutionary level, one of the first and most important hypotheses that proposes an evolutionary tendency in the evolution of body sizes is "Cope's rule". This rule has considerable empirical support in the fossil record and predicts that the size of species within a lineage increases over evolutionary time. Nevertheless, there is also a large amount of evidence indicating the opposite pattern of miniaturization over evolutionary time. A recent analysis using a single phylogenetic tree approach and a bayesian based model of evolution found no evidence for Cope's rule in extant mammal species. Here we utilize a likelihood-based phylogenetic method, to test the evolutionary trend in body size, which considers phylogenetic uncertainty, to discern between Cope's rule and miniaturization, using extant Oryzomyini rodents as a study model. We evaluated body size trends using two principal predictions: (a) phylogenetically related species are more similar in their body size, than expected by chance; (b) body size increased (Cope's rule)/decreased (miniaturization) over time. Consequently the distribution of forces and/or constraints that affect the tendency are homogenous and generate this directional process from a small/large sized ancestor. Results showed that body size in the Oryzomyini tribe evolved according to phylogenetic relationships, with a positive trend, from a small sized ancestor. Our results support that the high diversity and specialization currently observed in the Oryzomyini tribe is a consequence of the evolutionary trend of increased body size, following and supporting Cope's rule.  相似文献

Simultaneous changes in sleep and body temperature, produced either by lesion or by stimulation of the medial preoptic area (mPOA), have given reasons to suggest that thermoregulation and sleep regulation are controlled by the same set of neurons. The reasons for simultaneous changes in these parameters are discussed in the present paper with a view to explaining the relationship between thermoregulation and sleep regulation. Changes in body temperature and sleep on destruction of the preoptic area (POA) neurons and the sequence of these changes, suggest a separate control mechanism in the mPOA for regulation of sleep and body temperature. Evidence is put forward in the present paper to show that the mPOA is not involved in the downregulation or upregulation of changes in body temperature with alteration in the vigilance state. On the other hand, circadian modulation of body temperature is possibly involved in altering sleep propensity. A clear indication regarding separate control of sleep and body temperature came from the studies in which noradrenergic agents were applied into the mPOA of animals with and without lesion of the noradrenergic fibers projecting to the mPOA. Experiments in which sleep was analyzed after experimental manipulations of ambient temperature and body temperature, including peripheral, core and brain temperature, are presented here to show a close relationship between thermoregulation and sleep regulation. Various theories regarding the regulation of body temperature during slow wave sleep and rapid eye movement sleep are also discussed. The functional integrity of the mPOA may be essential not only for the regulation of body temperature and sleep-wakefulness but even for the homeostatic regulation of energy balance of the body in response to alterations in environmental temperature and sleep-wakefulness.
