Maximum voluntary contractions (MVCs) are often used for the normalisation of electromyography data to enable comparison of signal patterns within and between study participants. Recommendations regarding the types of tasks that are needed to collect MVCs for the muscles of the forearm have been made, specifically advocating the use of resisted moment tasks to get better estimates of forearm MVCs. However, a protocol detailing which specific tasks to employ has yet to be published. Furthermore, the effects of limb dominance on the collection of MVCs have not been considered previously. Muscle activity was monitored while 23 participants performed nine isometric, resisted tasks. The tasks that are likely to elicit MVC in the flexor carpi ulnaris, flexor carpi radialis, flexor digitorum superficialis, extensor carpi ulnaris, extensor carpi radialis, extensor digitorum communis, and pronator teres were identified. Thus, targeted protocols can be designed to mitigate against fatigue. Hand dominance had limited effect, with differences being found only in the finger flexors and extensors (p< 0.03). Thus, use of the contralateral flexor digitorum superficialis and extensor digitorum communis muscles to obtain baselines for activation levels and patterns may not be appropriate.  相似文献

Forearm compartment syndrome is a surgical emergency that usually requires release of the superficial muscle compartments. In some clinical situations it is imperative to also explore the deep muscle compartments. There are no anatomical guides for surgical exploration of the deep compartments that would minimize collateral damage to surrounding vessels, nerves, and muscles. Surgical injury in the setting of ischemia, especially vascular injury, compounds the tissue damage that has already occurred. The authors evaluated four surgical approaches (three volar and one dorsal) to the deep forearm by performing detailed anatomical dissections on 10 embalmed and plastinated cadavers. They used a scoring system to rate the approaches for their ability to visualize the deep space without causing iatrogenic injury to superficial muscles, arteries, and nerves. In the volar forearm, an ulnar approach to the deep space is simple, causes the least iatrogenic surgical injury, and provides access to the deep volar forearm structures. The plane of dissection is between the flexor carpi ulnaris and the flexor digitorum superficialis. Dividing one or two distal segmental branches of the ulnar artery to the distal flexor digitorum superficialis exposes the pronator quadratus. Lifting the ulnar neurovascular bundle with the flexor digitorum superficialis in the middle third of the forearm exposes the flexor digitorum profundus and the flexor pollicis longus. This approach to the deep space requires no sharp dissection. In the dorsal forearm, a midline approach between the extensor digitorum communis and the extensor carpi radialis brevis is simple and safe.  相似文献

Vascular anatomy of the forearm muscles: a study of 50 dissections   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This anatomic study is based on 50 adult cadaver upper extremities. The general disposition of the forearm arteries and muscles and the main anatomic variations encountered are specified. Constant existence of an "anterior oblique artery" satellite of the pronator teres was established. The median nerve artery was principally dedicated to the flexor digitorum superficialis and participated appreciably in the constitution of palmar arches in only one case. A supernumerary intermedial radial muscle was found only in two cases. The abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis appeared as a single muscular and vascular unit in 84 percent of cases. All the arteries destined for muscles were reckoned whatever their caliber might be. Despite its limitations, this study confirms the very great number of the forearm muscular pedicles. Each forearm contained an average of 264 muscular vascular pedicles. The systematization of the origins and destinations of the 13,158 muscular pedicles is described in a numbered manner for each of the 20 normal forearm muscles and for each of the 12 studied arterial segments. The pronator teres was likely to be supplied by all the anterior arteries of the upper limb. The flexor carpi radialis had one or two dominant pedicles originated from the recurrens ulnaris anterior, recurrens ulnaris, or ulnaris-interossea communis arteries, and many transversal branches originated from the radial artery. The flexor carpi ulnaris was supplied in its proximal third by the recurrens ulnaris posterior artery and in its distal two-thirds by many branches of ulnar artery.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The aims of this study were to explore muscle activity levels during different violin repertoires, quantify the general levels bilaterally in upper extremity muscles, and evaluate associations between muscle activity and anthropometrics characteristics. In 18 skilled violin players surface EMG was recorded bilaterally from trapezius (UT), flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU), extensor digitorum cummunis (EDC), and extensor carpi radialis (ECR) during A and E major scales played in three octaves and Mozart’s Violin Concerto no. 5. To compare side differences the static, median and peak levels of muscle activity were calculated from an amplitude probability distribution function (APDF). This study demonstrated that scales played as standardized tasks can be used to estimate the average muscle activity during violin playing. Comparing results from scales and the music piece revealed a similar muscle activity across all muscles in the music piece and E major scales. The static, median and peak EMG levels were higher in left than in right forearm muscles with left ECU presenting the highest peak load of 30 %MVE. Females demonstrated a higher muscle activity than males, but this was in accordance with differences in anthropometric measures.  相似文献

Objective:This paper presents the analyses of the fatigue effect on the cross-talk in mechanomyography (MMG) signals of extensor and flexor forearm muscles during pre- and post-fatigue maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC).Methods:Twenty male participants performed repetitive submaximal (60% MVIC) grip muscle contractions to induce muscle fatigue and the results were analyzed during the pre- and post-fatigue MVIC. MMG signals were recorded on the extensor digitorum (ED), extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL), flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) and flexor carpi radialis (FCR) muscles. The cross-correlation coefficient was used to quantify the cross-talk values in forearm muscle pairs (MP1, MP2, MP3, MP4, MP5 and MP6). In addition, the MMG RMS and MMG MPF were calculated to determine force production and muscle fatigue level, respectively. Results:The fatigue effect significantly increased the cross-talk values in forearm muscle pairs except for MP2 and MP6. While the MMG RMS and MMG MPF significantly decreased (p<0.05) based on the examination of the mean differences from pre- and post-fatigue MVIC.Conclusion:The presented results can be used as a reference for further investigation of cross-talk on the fatigue assessment of extensor and flexor muscles’ mechanic.  相似文献

Exposure and infection of a Gore-Tex vascular access graft often results in removal of the graft. Salvage of the graft is possible, however, with the use of well-vascularized muscle flaps. In 1982, Hodgkinson was the first to use a sublimis muscle flap to cover an exposed vascular access graft. We used the flexor carpi ulnaris and flexor digitorum superficialis to cover exposed Gore-Tex grafts in nine patients. The sublimis was used to cover distal graft exposures, and the longer flexor carpi ulnaris muscle was used to cover more proximal sites. Multiple exposures required both flaps or combinations of muscle flaps and local rotation flaps. Eight of nine chronically exposed grafts were salvaged using these techniques; a graft was removed from one patient because of diffuse unrecognized graft bed infection. Disability is minimized by using only part of the sublimis, and loss of the flexor carpi ulnaris is compensated by local muscles with similar actions. Vascular puncture can be continued during healing.  相似文献

The Sterkfontein hand bones, attributed to Australopithecus africanus, were analysed to determine potential hand function of the power grip type of this species. The metacarpus is as stable as that of modern humans, as indicated by the depth of the groove on the base of metacarpal 2, the styloid process of metacarpal 3, the base articular surface areas, and the ligament markings on the bases of the metacarpals. The flexion and rotation of metacarpal 5 might have been less than that of modern humans, due to a more marked ventral articular lip on the base. The metacarpus acts as a lever, acting in various planes. The extensor carpi ulnaris and extensor carpi radialis longus muscles were probably better developed than in modern humans. The extensor carpi radialis brevis and flexor carpi radialis muscles would probably have been as well developed as in modern humans. None of the long tendons have a mechanical disadvantage as compared to modern humans. The metacarpals have a high robusticity index. The proximal phalanges show some midshaft swelling, slightly greater curvature than in modern humans, and some side to side bowing: pongid features. The fibrous flexor sheath markings are well developed, but resemble those of modern humans rather than those of the pongids. A single middle phalanx resembles that of modern humans, and has well developed ridges for insertion of the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle. The distal phalanx of the thumb has a well developed region for insertion of the flexor pollicis longus muscle, and has a mechanical advantage over modern humans for action of this muscle at the interphalangeal joint. The features indicate that the hand of A. africanus was well adapted to powerful hand use, as in hammering, striking, chopping, scraping, and gouging actions, as well as for throwing and climbing activities.  相似文献

To study the functional implication of neuronal responses in frontal cortex to noxious and innocuous heat stimuli, experiments were carried out on two monkeys (Macaca mulatta) during performing a delayed discrimination GO/NO-GO task. The animals were trained to hold a lever for at least 3 s in the response period when an innocuous heat stimulus had been applied to the forearm in the cue period, or release it within 1 s with a noxious one. After a criterion of 90% of correct responses in 3 successive days was reached, single neuronal activity was recorded from the frontal cortex along with EMGs from six muscles in both arms. Of 142 task-related neurons recorded, 87 (66.4%) were related to heat, 34 to visual, and 21 to both visual and heat stimuli. Among the heat-related neurons, 22 were responsive to noxious heat, 18 to innocuous heat, and 47 to both. Of the neurons responding to both noxious and innocuous heat stimuli, 4 neurons showed changes in discharge rates, depending on the type of stimuli. In most cases, muscular activities just appeared at the moment of lever pressing and/or releasing in m. extensor digitorium communis, m. flexor carpi ulnaris and m. flexor carpi radialis of the performing arm. No regular muscular activities appeared in other muscles and in other periods of the task. The result showed that the neuronal responses in frontal cortex elicited by heat stimuli in the cue period were not related directly to the initiation and modulation of behaviours.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The aim of this study was to discriminate fatigue of upper limb muscles depending on the external load, through the development and analysis of a muscle fatigue index. Muscle fatigue is expressed by a fatigue index based on an amplitude parameter (calculated in the time domain) and a fatigue index based on a frequency parameter (a parameter calculated in the frequency domain). The fatigue index involves a regression function that describes changes in the EMG signal parameter, time elapsing before muscle fatigue and the probability of specific trends in changes in EMG parameters for the population under study.

The experimental study covered a group of 10 young men. During the study, they exerted force at a specific level and for a specific time in 12 load variants. During the study, EMG signals from four muscles of the upper limb were recorded (trapezius pars descendents, biceps brachii caput breve, extensor carpi radialis brevis, flexor carpi ulnaris). For each variant and for each examined muscles, the value of the fatigue index was calculated. Values of that index quantitatively expressed fatigue of a specific muscle in a specific load variant.

A statistical analysis indicated variation in the fatigue of the biceps brachii caput breve, extensor carpi radialis brevis, and flexor carpi ulnaris muscles depending on the external load (load variant) according to the task performed with the upper limb.

The study demonstrated usefulness of the fatigue index in expressing quantitatively muscle fatigue and in discriminating muscle fatigue depending on the external load.  相似文献

We measured the medial joint distance (MJD), activity of muscles involved in medial elbow-joint support, and grip strength, aiming to examine the supportfunction of muscles.MJD was measured in supinated and pronated positions of the forearm of 10 participants under three conditions: at rest (R), under valgus load on the elbow joint (L), and under valgus load on the elbow joint during the grip task (L-grip). Under the L-grip condition, electromyography was performed on flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), pronator teres (PT), flexor carpi radialis (FCR), and flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU); subsequently, normalized integrated electromyograms (NIEMG) were calculated. Under the L-grip condition, MJD was shorter in the pronated position than in the supinated position (p < 0.001); however, grip strength was lower in the pronated position. NIEMG of FDS was 90% in both positions, and those of FCR and FCU were low at 10%. However, that of PT was 3.6% in the supinated position and 40.9% in the pronated position, showing higher NIEMG in the pronated position (p < 0.001). Medial support during grip tasks was higher in the pronated position probably because PT activity compensates for the decreased FDS activity.  相似文献

The abductor pollicis longus (APL) is one of the primary radial deviators of the wrist, owing to its insertion at the base of the first metacarpal and its large moment arm about the radioulnar deviation axis. Although it plays a vital role in surgical reconstructions of the wrist and hand, it is often neglected while simulating wrist motions in vitro. The aim of this study was to observe the effects of the absence of APL on the distribution of muscle forces during wrist motions. A validated physiological wrist simulator was used to replicate cyclic planar and complex wrist motions in cadaveric specimens by applying tensile loads to six wrist muscles – flexor carpi radialis (FCR), flexor carpi ulnaris, extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL), extensor carpi radialis brevis, extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) and APL. Resultant muscle forces for active wrist motions with and without actuating the APL were compared. The absence of APL resulted in higher forces in FCR and ECRL – the synergists of APL – and lower forces in ECU – the antagonist of APL. The altered distribution of wrist muscle forces observed in the absence of active APL control could significantly alter the efficacy of in vitro experiments conducted on wrist simulators, in particular when investigating those surgical reconstructions or rehabilitation of the wrist heavily reliant on the APL, such as treatments for basal thumb osteoarthritis.  相似文献

The fraction of crosstalk was examined from the surface EMG signals collected from digit- and wrist-dedicated flexors with a blind signal separation (BSS) algorithm. Six participants performed static power grip tasks in a neutral posture at four different exertion levels of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% MVC. The signals were collected from the flexor digitorum superficialis, flexor digitorum profundus, flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, and flexor carpi ulnaris using a bipolar electrode configuration. The percentage of root mean square (RMS) was used as an amplitude-based index of crosstalk by normalizing the signals including crosstalk to those excluding crosstalk by the BSS algorithm for each %MVC exertion. The peak R2 value of a cross-correlation function was also calculated as a correlation-based index of crosstalk for a group of forearm flexors by force level and algorithm application. The fraction of crosstalk ranged from 32% to 50% in the wrist-dedicated flexors and from 11% to 25% in the digit-dedicated flexors. Since surface EMG signals had such high levels of crosstalk, reduction methods like the BSS algorithm should be employed, as the BSS significantly reduced crosstalk in the forearm flexors 33% over all muscles and exertion levels. Thus, it is recommended that BSS be utilized to reduce crosstalk for the digit- and wrist-dedicated flexors during gripping tasks.  相似文献

Computer mouse work often includes memory demands and contra lateral activity. This study simulated video display unit (VDU) mouse-work and the focus was on forearm muscle activity as a result of standardised postural loads, memory demands and contra lateral activity. Surface and intramuscular electromyography (EMG) were recorded from the right forearm muscles during finger elevation and rest with and without memory demands and with and without contra lateral activity i.e. activity of the left hand. In most situations, memory demand increased activity in the m. extensor carpi radialis brevis and m. flexor digitalis superficialis. Also contra lateral activity increased activity in situations with and without memory demands. While surface EMG level of the m. extensor digitorum communis did not increase during memory demands, intramuscular EMG level increased when memory demands and contra lateral activity was combined. Influence of memory demands and contra lateral activity were most pronounced, in situations where activity levels were small. We presume that it is not only prolonged time of active computer mouse use that is a risk for development of musculoskeletal disorders, but also the time when people interact with the computer mentally or with the 'non-mouse hand', while resting their 'mouse-hand' on the mouse.  相似文献

Two of the forearm flexors of the horse, the superficial and deep digital flexor muscles, are critical to support the digital and fetlock joints, exhibit differing insertions, and are passively supported by the proximal and distal check ligaments, respectively. These two muscles differ in histochemical composition and architecture. The differences are correlated with the different stress levels transmitted through their tendons, and the different frequencies of clinical breakdown that have been reported. Both muscles contain type I and type IIa fibers. A few type IIb fibers occurred in the deep digital flexor. The superficial digital flexor contained approximately 56% type I fibers, extremely short muscle fibers, and extensive connective tissue investment. In contrast, the deep digital flexor had three muscle heads: ulnar, radial, and "long" and "short" regions of the humeral head. The "long" and "short" regions of the humeral head contained 33% and 44% type I fibers, respectively, fiber lengths three to four times as long as those in the superficial digital flexor, and relatively less connective tissue investment. Flexor carpi radialis and flexor carpi ulnaris compared most closely with the humeral head of the deep digital flexor. These data suggest a correlation of the unique architecture of superficial digital flexor with its proposed elastic storage properties during locomotion in horses, and an explanation for the frequent breakdown of the superficial digital flexor in athletic horses.  相似文献

The study examined the fatigue effect on tennis performance and upper limb muscle activity. Ten players were tested before and after a strenuous tennis exercise. Velocity and accuracy of serve and forehand drives, as well as corresponding surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of eight upper limb muscles were measured. EMG and force were also evaluated during isometric maximal voluntary contractions (IMVC). Significant decreases were observed after exercise in serve accuracy (−11.7%) and velocity (−4.5%), forehand accuracy (−25.6%) and consistency (−15.6%), as well as pectoralis major (PM) and flexor carpi radialis (FCR) IMVC strength (−13.0% and −8.2%, respectively). EMG amplitude decreased for PM and FCR in serve, forehand and IMVC, and for extensor carpi radialis in forehand. No modification was observed in EMG activation timing during strokes or in EMG frequency content during IMVC. Several hypotheses can be put forward to explain these results. First, muscle fatigue may induce a reduction in activation level of PM and forearm muscles, which could decrease performance. Second, conscious or subconscious strategies could lead to a redistribution of muscle activity to non-fatigued muscles in order to protect the organism and/or limit performance losses. Otherwise, the modifications of EMG activity could also illustrate the strategies adopted to manage the speed-accuracy trade-off in such a complex task.  相似文献

The primary objective of this study was to investigate the reliability of the myotonometer in the mechanical properties of the forearm muscles [m. extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB), and m. flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU)] in healthy individuals. The secondary objective was to investigate the relationship between the handgrip strength and mechanical properties of these forearm muscles. The mechanical properties (muscle tone, stiffness, and elasticity) of the ECRB and FCU were measured using the MyotonPRO device. Examiner 1 performed two sets of measurements with a time interval of 30 min to determine intra-examiner reliability. Examiner 2 performed measurements during the interval between the two sets of examiner 1. The intra- and inter-examiner reliabilities were excellent (ICC˃0.82) for muscle tone, stiffness, and elasticity of the FCU. Both intra- and inter-examiner reliability in the evaluation of ECRB muscle tone, elasticity, and stiffness was moderate to excellent (ICCs = 0.56–0.98). The muscle tone and stiffness properties of the FCU were positively correlated with the handgrip strength (p <.05). The study findings indicate that the MyotonPRO device is a reliable tool to quantify ECRB, and FCU muscles mechanical properties in healthy individuals.  相似文献

In 47 dissected right and left hands of adults of both sexes, kept in a moist condition, significant practical-clinical investigations of the transitional zone between forearm and hand were undertaken. In particular it was sought to determine the characteristic sizes of the extensor retinaculum, the osteofibrous tunnels, the insertion tendons of the hand and finger extensor muscles, and their tendon sheaths. Together with the palmar carpal ligament, the 2 to 3 cm wide extensor retinaculum annularly surrounds the whole circumference of the carpus. It extends obliquely from radial-proximal to ulnar-distal and conducts the extensor tendons over the carpal articulations. According to recent studies, it is divided into a superficial and a deep fibrous layer. From the undermost surface, vertical and oblique septa run to the plane of the forearm and carpal bones. They separate the fibrous portion of the 6 tendinous compartments of the dorsum manus. In 8.5% of cases, an accessory and completely independent tunnel of the extensor pollicis brevis muscle exists in the material investigated, and in 2.2% of cases, there is an additional tunnel for the extensor carpi radialis muscle. Hence, one occasionally finds 8 separate osteofibrous gliding compartments for the extensor muscles in the dorsal hand region. The longest tunnel belongs, as a rule, to the extensor digiti minimi muscle, whilst the widest pertains to the extensor digitorum muscle. Within the tunnel and also proximal and distal to it, the extensor tendons are surrounded by synovial sheaths. Because of its wide encroachment on the dorsum of the hand, the insertion tendon of the extensor digiti minimi muscle possesses the longest tendon sheath, measuring 68.8 mm. The next longest sheath, that of the extensor pollicis longus muscle, which measures 56.2 mm, begins further proximal to the gap of the radiocarpal articulation. In 12.8% of cases, there are divided sheaths of the abductor pollicis longus and of the extensor pollicis brevis muscle. The tendon sheath of both extensor carpi radiales muscles is frequently divided into 2 compartments which, in 2/3 of cases, communicate. The compartment of the extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle, in 91.5% of cases, shares a window-like opening with the roof of the synovial vagina of the extensor pollicis longus muscle. The tendon sheath of the long extensor muscles of the fingers originates 5 mm proximal to the forearm border of the extensor retinaculum and has a communal recess. The IVth tendon sheath opens distally and splays out in a glove-like manner to some distal recesses.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

We analyzed the time course of changes in muscle activity of the prime mover and synergist muscles during a sustained brake-pulling action and investigated the relationship between muscle activity and braking force fluctuation (FF). Thirty-two participants performed a continuous fatiguing protocol (CFP) at 30% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) until failure. Surface electromyography was used to analyze root mean square (RMS) values in the flexor digitorum superficialis (FD), flexor carpi radialis (FC), extensor digitorum communis (ED), extensor carpi radialis (EC), brachioradialis (BR), biceps brachii (BB), and triceps brachii (TB). The FF and RMS in all muscles increased progressively (P<0.01) during the CFP, with sharp increments at time limit particularly in FD and FC (P<0.001). The RMS of the FD and FC were comparable to the baseline MVC values at time limit, in comparison to the other muscles that did not reach such levels of activity (P<0.003). The three flexor/extensor ratios used to measure coactivation levels decreased significantly (P<0.001). In contrast to RMS, MVC was still depressed at the minute 10 of recovery. The results suggest that the time limit was mainly constrained by fatigue-related mechanisms of the FD and FC but not by those of other synergist and antagonist muscles.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the stabilisation of the wrist joint and the ad hoc wrist muscles activations during the two principal phases of the freestyle stroke. Seven male international swimmers performed a maximal semi-tethered power test. A swimming ergometer fixed on the start area of the pool was used to collect maximal power. The electromyography signal (EMG) of the right flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) and extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) was recorded with surface electrodes and processed using the integrated EMG (IEMG). Frontal and sagittal video views were digitised frame by frame to determine the wrist angle in the sagittal plane and the principal phases of the stroke (insweep, outsweep). Important stabilisation of the wrist and high antagonist muscle activity were observed during the insweep phase due to the great mechanical constraints. In outsweep, less stabilisation and lower antagonist activities were noted. Factors affecting coactivations in elementary movements, e.g. intensity and instability of the load, accuracy and economy of the movement were confirmed in complex aquatic movement.  相似文献

BackgroundHandwriting is a fundamental skill needed for the development of daily-life activities during lifetime and can be performed using different forms to hold the writing object. In this study, we monitored the sEMG activity of trapezius, biceps brachii, extensor carpi radialis brevis and flexor digitorum superficialis during a handwriting task with two groups of subjects using different grasp patterns.Subjects and methodsTwenty-four university students (thirteen males and eleven females; mean age of 22.04 ± 2.8 years) were included in this study. We randomly invited 12 subjects that used the Dynamic Tripod grasp and 12 subjects that used the Static Tripod grasp.ResultsThe static tripod group showed statistically significant changes in the sEMG activity of trapezium and biceps brachii muscles during handwriting when compared to dynamic tripod group’s subjects. No significant differences were found in extensor carpi radialis brevis and flexor digitorum superficialis activities among the two groups.ConclusionThe findings in this study suggest an increased activity of proximal muscles among subjects using a transitional grasp, indicating potential higher energy expenditure and muscular harm with the maintenance of this motor pattern in handwriting tasks, especially during the progression in academic life.  相似文献
