Aposematism (warning) signaling is a common defensive mechanism toward predatory or herbivorous animals, i.e., interactions between different trophic levels. I propose that it should be considered at least as a working hypothesis that chemical aposematism operates between certain host plants and their plant predators, parasitic plants, and that although they are also plants, they belong to a higher trophic level. Specific host plant genotypes emit known repelling chemical signals toward parasitic plants, which reduce the level of, slow the directional parasite growth (attack) toward the signaling hosts, or even cause parasitic plants to grow away from them in response to these chemicals. Chemical host aposematism toward parasitic plants may be a common but overlooked defense from parasitic plants. 相似文献

The effect of dry conditions on the population dynamics of the entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) Steinernema affine was studied for one month in the exceptionally dry period in the summer of 2003 in the oak wood in the vicinity of Ceské Budejovice, Czech Republic. Soil moisture, soil temperature, and the abundance of suitable insect hosts were monitored. The abundance of infective juveniles (IJs) was correlated with soil moisture and both these values were gradually decreasing during the study period and finally rapidly increased at the end of the investigation. During this period there was a decline in the number of insects suitable as hosts for S. affine, but not in numbers of unsuitable insects. We hypothesise that the observed decrease in IJ numbers was probably caused by the persistence of IJs in host cadavers due to low ambient moisture. 相似文献

Parsimony-based techniques may help to reconstruct phylogeny based on knowledge of character evolution, and vice versa. Problems arise when one deals with poorly known and poorly understood phylogenies and character behaviour, as in such cases it is not easy to avoid circular logic. This study is concerned with such a case: the poorly understood systematics of the family Hydrobiidae; and with a new character set: shell surface and inner structure as studied by SEM. This is based on previous papers by these authors, describing these structures. A total of 25 binary or multistate characters were chosen, all of unknown transformation series and unclear homologies. The shortest tree was found with the HENNIG86 PC program, and further analysis was carried out with MACCLADE. The evolution of all the characters was analysed. Seven characters were excluded as being uninformative and/or having unknown states in some taxa. MPR was rooted based on the outgroup criterion, resulting in a tree that was two steps longer. The latter was compared with four trees found in the literature. The SEM-based tree supports only the tree based on the classification by Ponder and Warén (1988) and does not support the trees constructed following the systems described by Bernasconi (1992) or Radoman (1983). The shell-structure characters seem to show the same mosaic pattern of evolution as shown by the traditionally used characters, extending the character list. It seems possible to support the ‘traditional’ data set with the ‘new’ one using successive approximations, thus avoiding circular logic. 相似文献

For their biological and ecological characteristics, ticks are vectors of the widest variety of pathogens causing tick-borne diseases (TBDs). Little information is available about the ways in which time spent by ticks to feed on hosts, transmission times and TBD prevention are related and it is exclusively limited to laboratory reports on adult stages. In particular, the time required by immature stages to transmit pathogens has not been determined for most TBDs. Considering their importance for animal and human health, effective control of immature ticks is advisable to reduce the damage ticks cause. Recently, the efficacy of a combination of imidacloprid 10%/permethrin 50% was compared with that of fipronil 10%/S-methoprene 9% against ticks when administered to naturally infected dogs. A semi-quantitative method was used to assess the methodological parameters to calculate drug efficacy on immature stages. On adult ticks, the efficacy of both products was high and overall very similar, whereas for the immature stages the combination of imidacloprid 10% and permethrin 50% had a higher efficacy than fipronil 10% and methoprene 9% throughout the observation period (statistically significant difference on day + 28 only). The semi-quantitative method proposed for the evaluation of immature stages can be considered a useful tool for calculating the efficacy of a drug in the field. Due the important role of immatures in the spread of TBDs, the immature tick load should be calculated to assess the efficacy of acaricidal products both under laboratory and field conditions. 相似文献

Summary As a test of the hypothesis that adult temperature stress is an important component of natural selection maintaining the -gpdh polymorphism, we have looked for differential survival among genotypes subjected to (i) heat shock and (ii) cold shock. Factorial ANOVAR, taking account of genotype, sex and temperature-stress indicated that genotype did not contribute to the variance of survival proportion per vial. We have not therefore found evidence to support our hypothesis. Incidental to the above was a significant sex-temperature interaction. Thus, adult females showed higher survival than males under heat stress, while under cold stress, there was no indication of a survival difference between the sexes. 相似文献

In the southern Appalachian mountains a subcanopy species, Rhododendron maximum, inhibits the establishment and survival of canopy tree seedlings. One of the mechanisms by which seedlings could be inhibited is an allelopathic effect of decomposing litter or leachate from the canopy of R. maximum (R.m.) on seed germination, root elongation, or mycorrhizal colonization. The potential for allelopathy by R.m. was tested with two bioassay species (lettuce and cress), with seeds from four native tree species, and with three ectomycorrhizal fungi. Inhibitory influences of throughfall, fresh litter, and decomposed litter (organic layer) from forest with R.m. (+R.m. sites) were compared to similar extractions made from forest without R.m. (-R.m. sites). Throughfall and leachates of the organic layer from both +R.m. and -R.m. sites stimulated germination of the bioassay species above that of the distilled water control, to a similar extent. There was an inhibitory effect of leachates of litter from +R.m. sites on seed germination and root elongation rate of both bioassay species compared with that of litter from -R.m. sites. Native tree seed stratified in forest floor material from both forest types had a slightly higher seed germination rate compared with the control. A 2-yr study of seed germination and seedling mortality of two tree species, Quercus rubra and Prunus serotina, in field plots showed no significant influence of litter or organic layer from either forest type. Incorporating R.m. leaf material into the growth medium in vitro depressed growth of one ectomycorrhizal species but did not affect two other species. Leaf material from other deciduous tree species depressed ectomycorrhizal growth to a similar or greater extent as leaf material from R.m. In conclusion, R.m. litter can have an allelopathic effect on seed germination and root elongation of bioassay species as well as some ectomycorrhizal species. However, this allelopathic affect is not manifest in field sites and is not likely to be an important cause for the inhibition of seedling survival within thickets of R.m. 相似文献

Liver FABP (fatty-acid-binding protein) binds a variety of non-polar anionic ligands including fatty acids, fatty acyl CoAs, lysophospholipids and bile acids. Liver FABP is also able to bind to anionic phospholipid vesicles under conditions of low ionic strength, and membrane binding results in the release of bound ligand. However, the molecular interactions involved in binding to the phospholipid interface and the mechanism of ligand release are not known. Ligand release could be due to a significant conformational change in the protein at the interface or interaction of a phospholipid molecule with the ligand-binding cavity of the protein resulting in ligand displacement. Two portal mutant proteins of liver FABP, L28W and M74W, have now been used to investigate the binding of liver FABP to anionic phospholipid vesicles, monitoring changes in fluorescence and also fluorescence quenching in the presence of brominated lipids. There is a large increase in fluorescence intensity when the L28W mutant protein binds to vesicles prepared from DOPG (dioleoyl-sn-phosphatidylglycerol), but a large decrease in fluorescence intensity when the M74W mutant binds to these vesicles. The Br(4)-phospholipid prepared by bromination of DOPG dramatically quenches both L28W and M74W, consistent with the close proximity of a fatty acyl chain to the tryptophan residues. The binding of liver FABP to DOPG vesicles is accompanied by only a minimal change in the CD spectrum. Overall, the results are consistent with a molecule of anionic phospholipid interacting with the central cavity of the liver FABP, possibly involving the phospholipid molecule in an extended conformation. 相似文献

The invasive box‐tree moth Cydalima perspectalis causes damage to horticultural box trees (Buxus spp.) in private gardens and parks in Europe and defoliation of large areas of European native box trees Buxus sempervirens, which grow in the understorey of deciduous forests. In some parts of their distribution area, wild native box trees are infected by the box rust Puccinia buxi, a fungus which does not occur in the native range of C. perspectalis. We examined whether the infection of P. buxi deters grazing by C. perspectalis in 31 wild box‐tree stands in forests in north‐western Switzerland and south‐western Germany. On average, 82.4% of the box trees were infested by P. buxi (among‐site variation 20%–100%), or 18.5% of their leaves. Linear mixed‐effect (LME) models revealed that the percentage of rust‐infected leaves was influenced by the local box‐tree density and the slope aspect of the forest site. 9.5% of the leaves showed grazing damage by C. perspectalis. LME showed that the percentage of leaves with grazing damage was affected by the elevation of the site and the percentage of rust‐infected leaves. The effect of box rust infection on food choice and larval performance (survival and growth rate) was examined in two experiments. In food‐choice tests, larvae of C. perspectalis did not show any preference for uninfected or rust‐infected box‐tree leaves and consumed similar amounts of leaf tissue of either type. However, when larvae were reared on leaves with three different degrees of P. buxi‐infection (and uninfected leaves as control), both survival and growth rate decreased with increasing degree of rust infection. This indicates that larval performance of C. perspectalis is reduced by the box rust. In the case of an outbreak of C. perspectalis, however, larvae may indiscriminately defoliate wild box trees. 相似文献

Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) are eaten by a number of bird species in southern Africa. Our database contained 545 species (excluding waterbirds and raptors), of which 179 species have been observed feeding on ants, or had ants in their stomachs. Ants are eaten by birds in all ecosystems, but the consumption of ants is disproportionately high in species that occur in arid ecosystems. The number of bird species eating ants increases in proportion to the number of bird species in any ecosystem, but it increases disproportionately with decreasing mean annual rainfall. There was a small, but not significant, difference in the proportion of ant-eating bird species between 502 resident species, of which 154 (30.6%) eat ants, and 47 nomadic species, of which 18 (38.2%) eat ants. Foraging behaviour and substrate, i.e. whether foraging in the air, from a perch or on the ground, significantly influenced the probability that ants would be included in the diet. 相似文献

The Lymnaeidae constitute a significant part of the freshwater molluscan diversity of Greenland. Since 1842, not less than 10 nominal taxa of the species and variety rank were described to organize the diversity of the Greenland lymnaeid snails. All previous attempts to revise these taxa were systematically based on morphological evidence only. Here, we provide a molecular analysis of the phylogenetic affinity and systematic status of three alleged species of the Greenland Lymnaeidae: Lymnaea vahlii (Møller, 1842), L. holboellii (Møller, 1842), and L. pingelii (Møller, 1842). We examined the newly collected material and inspected the type series of the three species. Our results show a very tight relationship between the Greenland snails and the Nearctic species Ladislavella catascopium (Say, 1817) s. lato. From the genetic point of view, the Greenland populations should be classified within L. catascopium, albeit probably with the merit of a subspecies status. The three nominal species of lymnaeids described by Møller (1842) are apparently synonyms of each other. Our findings assume a rather recent colonization of Greenland by snails arriving from the North American mainland, which is compatible with the so-called “tabula rasa” hypothesis, proposed to explain the currently observed taxonomic diversity of continental animals and plants of the North Atlantic islands. No lymnaeid species endemic to Greenland is thus revealed. 相似文献

Across existing fish host–parasite literature, endoparasites were depleted in δ15N compared to their hosts, while ectoparasitic values demonstrated enrichment, depletion and equivalence relative to their hosts. δ13C enrichment varied extensively for both endo- and ectoparasites across taxa and host tissues. In our case study, sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) were enriched in δ15N relative to their farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) hosts, although the value contradicted the average that is currently assumed across the animal kingdom. Common fish lice (Argulus foliaceus) did not show a consistent trend in δ15N compared to their wild S. salar hosts. Both parasitic species had a range of δ13C enrichment patterns relative to their hosts. Farmed and wild S. salar had contrasting δ13C and δ15N, and signals varied across muscle, fin and skin within both groups. L. salmonis and A. foliaceus subsequently had unique δ13C and δ15N, and L. salmonis from opposite US coasts differed in δ15N. Given the range of enrichment patterns that were exhibited across the literature and in our study system, trophic dynamics from host to parasite do not conform to traditional prey to predator standards. Furthermore, there does not appear to be a universal enrichment pathway for δ13C nor δ15N in parasitic relationships, which emphasizes the need to investigate host–parasite linkages across species. 相似文献

Cryptaulax? bittneri, also known asPromathildia bittneri, is frequently reported to be present in Late Triassic biotas and is cited as a species with almost cosmopolitan distribution (S-Alps, S-America, Iran, Karakorum). Re-examination of the holotype of the species shows that nearly all reports are based on misidentifications. This species is known only from the holotype and thus it is known only from its type locality, the Cassian Formation (S-Alps, Italy). Frequent misidentifications show thatCryptaulax bittneri is poorly known and therefore the holotype is figured and redescribed. It is one of the earliest cerithioid gastropods that has a complex teleoconch ornament typical of many modern Cerithioidea. This complex ornament of axial ribs and spiral cords with knobby intersections could represent an early aspect of the Mesozoic marine revolution. A complex teleoconch ornament and a carinated larval shell could represent apomorphies of the Mesozoic Procerithiidae, since these characters are absent in the known Palaeozoic Cerithimorpha. The Recent genusArgyropeza is so similar to the procerithiid genusCryptaulax thatArgyropeza can be considered to represent a living fossil.Xystrella inaequelineata Nützel &; Senowbari-Daryan 1999 from the Late Triassic Nayband Formation of central Iran is transferred toCryptaulax. 相似文献

- Thermal disturbance of aquatic ecosystems directly and/or indirectly affects interspecific interactions, including parasitism. Both hosts and parasites respond differently to environmental changes, thus, predicting how host–parasite systems behave under the influence of disturbance remains a challenge. The aim of the study was to check how the differences in thermal conditions of lakes affect life-history traits of hosts and the level of parasitism, using a Viviparus contectus–digenean trematodes model.
- Overall, we examined 480 individuals of V. contectus collected from a thermally polluted lake (TPL) and a natural lake (NL). Host features, including body size and fecundity, as well as the prevalence and species richness of digenean trematodes in snail populations were investigated.
- We found that V. contectus from the TPL were significantly larger, heavier, and females were more fertile than snails collected from the NL. A total of 20.4% of the collected snails were infected with digenean larvae. The species richness of parasites was twice as high in the NL compared to the TPL (six and three species, respectively). A significant difference in the percentage of snails infected with parasites was identified between both types of lakes, with a higher prevalence of V. contectus in the NL (31.3%) compared to the TPL (7.3%).
- These results indicate that host–parasite systems follow the environmental changes in lakes due to thermal pollution by increasing fertility and metabolism rate of viviparid hosts and by decreasing the prevalence and diversity of digenean trematodes.
