Control of Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande) pupae in compost
Neil L. Helyer Patricia J. Brobyn Paul N. Richardson Rodney N. Edmondson 《The Annals of applied biology》1995,127(3):405-412
Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) develops from an active larval stage through to a non-feeding, almost immobile, pre-pupal and pupal stage. This generally occurs in the compost or soil below the plant on which the larvae fed. Control of thrips at this stage in their development offers a chance of utilising pathogens or pesticides not suitable for use in an integrated control programme aimed at adult and larval stages. Trials were done with F. occidentalis pupae and pre-pupae in a soil/peat based compost using 11 pesticides, three fungal pathogens and four species of insect parasitic nematodes. The pesticides malathion and chlorpyrifos-methyl gave the most promising result with 97.5% and 96.5% control, respectively. The fungal pathogen Metarhizium anisopliae proved better when applied as a pre-pupation rather than as a post-pupation treatment (74.5% : 26.6% control). The insect parasitic nematode Steinernema carpocapsae gave 76.6% control when applied at 25 times 104 nematodes litre-1 of compost. The results are discussed in relation to control of thrips in glasshouses.

Abstract 1 Since the late 1970s, the western flower thrips has spread from its original distribution in western North America to become a major worldwide crop pest. 2 A wide range of data sources have been used to map the original distribution in the U.S.A. and Canada, and the progress of the spread in the U.S.A., Canada, Europe, northern Africa and Australia. 3 The possible reasons for the start of the spread are discussed. The most likely reason is that intensive insecticide use in horticulture in the 1970s and 1980s selected an insecticide resistant strain or strains. These then established in glasshouses across North America and spread from there to Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. 4 The international spread of the western flower thrips occurred predominantly by the movement of horticultural material, such as cuttings, seedlings and potted plants. Within Europe, an outward spread from the original outbreak in the Netherlands is discernible. The speed of spread was 229 ± 20 km/year. 5 The spread has not been restricted to glasshouses. The western flower thrips has established outdoors in areas with milder winters; for example, across the southern U.S.A., southern Europe and Australia. It also overwinters in some regions with colder winters. 6 Polyphagous phytophagous thrips have many factors predisposing them to become worldwide crop pests, particularly in glasshouses. Some other species that might spread in a similar way to the western flower thrips are listed.

Starvation period and age affect the response of female Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) to odor and visual cues
The effects of starvation or age on the walking or flying response of female Frankliniella occidentalis to visual and/or odor cues in two types of olfactometer were examined in the laboratory. The response of walking thrips starved for 0, 1, 4, or 24h to an odor cue (1microl of 10% p-anisaldehyde) was examined in a Y-tube olfactometer. The take-off and landing response of thrips (unknown age) starved for 0, 1, 4, 24, 48 or 72h, or of thrips of different ages (2-3 days or 10-13 days post-adult emergence) starved for 24h, to a visual cue (98 cm(2) yellow sticky trap) and/or an odor cue (0.5 or 1.0 ml p-anisaldehyde) was examined in a wind tunnel. More thrips walked up the odor-laden arm in the Y-tube when starved for at least 4h (76%) than satiated thrips (58.7%) or those starved for 1h (62.7%, P<0.05). In the wind tunnel experiments the percentage of thrips to fly or land on the sticky trap increased between satiated thrips (7.3% to fly, 3.3% on trap) and those starved for 4h (81.2% to fly, 29% on trap) and decreased between thrips starved for 48 (74.5% to fly, 23% on trap) and 72 h (56.5% to fly, 15.5% on trap, P<0.05). Fewer younger thrips (38.8%) landed on a sticky trap containing a yellow visual cue of, those that flew, than older thrips (70.4%, P<0.05), although a similar percentage of thrips flew regardless of age or type of cue present in the wind tunnel (average 44%, P>0.05).

Western flower thrip (Frankliniella occidentalis) is a major global pest of agricultural products. It directly damages crops through feeding, oviposition activity or transmission of several plant viruses. We describe a Taqman real-time quantitative PCR detection system, which can rapidly identify F. occidentalis from thrips larvae to complement the traditional morphological identification. The data showed that our detection system targeted on the ribosomal RNA gene regions of F. occidentalis has high sensitivity and specificity. The rapid method can be used for on-site testing of samples at ports-of-entry in the future.

Specific cysteine protease inhibitors act as deterrents of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), in transgenic potato
Outchkourov NS de Kogel WJ Schuurman-de Bruin A Abrahamson M Jongsma MA 《Plant biotechnology journal》2004,2(5):439-448
In this study, the effects of the accumulation of cysteine protease inhibitors on the food preferences of adult female western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), were investigated. Representative members of the cystatin and thyropin gene families (stefin A, cystatin C, kininogen domain 3 and equistatin) were expressed in potato (Solanum tuberosum) cv. Impala, Kondor and Line V plants. In choice assays, a strong time- and concentration-dependent deterrence from plants expressing stefin A and equistatin was observed. Cystatin C and kininogen domain 3 were not found to be active. All tested inhibitors were equally or more active than stefin A at inhibiting the proteolytic activity of thrips, but, in contrast with stefin A, they were all expressed in potato as partially degraded proteins. The resistance of cysteine protease inhibitors against degradation in planta by endogenous plant proteases may therefore be relevant in explaining the observed differences in the deterrence of thrips. The results demonstrate that, when given a choice, western flower thrips will select plants with low levels of certain cysteine protease inhibitors. The novel implications of the defensive role of plant cysteine protease inhibitors as both deterrents and antimetabolic proteins are discussed.

All life stages of the western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande) were tested for their response to the fumigant methyl bromide and dose response curves were established. Pseudo-pupae were the most tolerant stage with a calculated LD99 of 53.1 mg litre“1 h at 15oC with a gas concentration of 13.5 mg litre”1, but no survivors were found in any test above a concentration time product of 40 mg litre“1 h. Standard 4 h fumigations achieving a CTP of 54 mg litre”1 h that are used to control other pests are therefore likely to give very high levels of control of western flower thrips.

Secondary acquisition of Beauveria bassiana conidia was recorded on the whole bodies and selected body parts of second-instar nymphs and adult female western flower thrips exposed to foliar spray residues of three differently formulated conidial preparations, for 24 h. Conidia were formulated in emulsifiable oil or with clay (wettable powder), or were essentially unformulated conidia (technical grade powder suspended in water with a surfactant). Formulation had no significant effect on dose acquisition and no effect on virulence of acquired conidia. The mean nymphal LC50/LD50 was 116 conidia/mm2 and 52conidia/insect, respectively; the values for adults were 19 conidia/mm2 and 5conidia/insect. Greatest numbers of conidia were recorded on the legs and abdomens of nymphs and on the legs, wings, and thoraces of adults. As would be expected, numbers of conidia acquired increased with residue concentration (application rate). However, an inverse relationship was noted between acquisition rate (conidia acquired/total conidia applied) and residue concentration. The mechanism underlying this response was not determined. However, there was no indication that any body parts (e.g., tarsi) became saturated with spores, which suggests that either the thrips were repelled by the conidial residues or that as the concentrations of conidia on the substrate increased, conidia somehow became more difficult to acquire. Slopes of the LC probit regressions were lower than those of the LD regressions (mean 1.14 vs 1.78), suggesting that the low slopes often obtained in fungal pathogen assays could be partly an artifact of unequal rates of dose acquisition at low vs high application rates.

To conduct laboratory experiments aimed at quantifying secondary acquisition of fungal conidia by western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis), an efficient assay technique using Beauveria bassiana as the model fungus was developed. Various application protocols were tested and it was determined that the percent mortality did not vary among protocols. Peak mortality of second-instar nymphs, under constant exposure to conidia, occurred 5 days post-inoculation. Second-instar thrips that were exposed to conidia within 24 h of the molt to second instar were more susceptible to Beauveria bassiana than thrips exposed after times greater than 24 h post-molt. Conidia efficacy, which was monitored at 24 h intervals, did not differ significantly within 72 h. A test of the final bioassay system was conducted in a series of assays aimed at determining the LD50 of B. bassiana technical powder against second-instar western flower thrips. It was determined that B. bassiana (strain GHA) is highly effective at very low doses (LD50 of 33-66 conidia/insect).

The potential of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok. for the control of Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) on chrysanthemum cuttings was evaluated in greenhouse experiments. The fungus significantly reduced both the adult and larval populations of F. occidentalis, although the level of control of larval populations was much lower than for adults. Combined application of M. anisopliae and Methomyl (Lannate®), however, resulted in a significant reduction of both the larval and adult stages. The use of both control agents might be helpful in reducing the selection pressure for resistance to chemical insecticides, thereby delaying or preventing the build-up of resistant populations in greenhouses. This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Biological characteristics of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysan., Thripae), were investigated on excised leaves of five vegetables: cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. Jingfeng 1), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. var. Zhongnong 8), capsicum (Capsicum annuum L. var. Zhongjiao 5), kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. Gonggeizhe) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum M. var. zhongza 9). The developmental time from egg to adult on the cucumber, cabbage, bean, capsicum and tomato leaf was 9.22 ± 0.13, 10.19 ± 0.08, 10.42 ± 0.06, 12.15 ± 0.07 and 12.91 ± 0.04 days, respectively. Survivorship of immatures on cucumber, cabbage and tomato was high (75–80%) but low on capsicum (50%). The total number of first instars produced was highest on cabbage (76.62 ± 11.79), while the daily first instar production was highest on cucumber (6.12 ± 1.81), whereas the total and daily first instar production rates were lowest on capsicum (7.67 ± 3.35 and 1.89 ± 0.91). F. occidentalis had the highest intrinsic rate of increase (rm) on cucumber (0.208), followed by cabbage (0.184), bean (0.164), tomato (0.100) and capsicum (0.017). The results indicate that cucumber was the most suitable host plant for F. occidentalis, whereas capsicum was the least suitable.

In the latitude of Kiev, 80% of Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande 1895) population was caught on the colour traps from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in summer and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in winter. Meanwhile, 10% of the population did not react to the colour traps at all (“passive” individuals), whereas for 20% of the population it was impossible to determine the clear colour with attractive properties. The thrips attracted with blue and yellow color traps, had more massive and variable body parts to be connected with their flight. Their antennae and segment sizes were significantly smaller than compared to the control variant, which could be explained by eyesight domination over other organs of sensory orientation. The indices of heterogeneity of morphological features can be used as evaluation criteria for the adaptive variability and stability of the thrips population.

Abstract: The population response of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) to triflumuron, growth regulator of the benzoyl-phenyl-urea group which performs a chitin-inhibiting action, was the subject of an experimental field test. The characteristics of the active ingredient (knock-down effect, temporal persistence and overall effect of the substance) were assessed in comparison with the responses of two synthetic insecticides (methiocarb, chlorpyrifos-methyl) and in relation to the different treatment strategies (number and dates of treatments). The results of the experimental tests were analysed using a specially developed innovative method, which allows to evaluate precisely and in quantitative terms the response of the system (modification in the population dynamics of thrips) to the treatment carried out. The observations performed highlight that, at the considered doses, triflumuron is characterized by a weak knock-down effect but by good temporal persistence which makes it a product endowed with a distinct larvicidal activity. Furthermore, its action is better overall than that of chlorpyrifos-methyl and is comparable with that of methiocarb.

The effect of the predatory miteHypoaspis aculeifer Canestrini (Acarina:Laelapidae) on soil-dwelling stages of thewestern flower thrips (WFT) Frankliniellaoccidentalis Pergande (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)and the influence of combined releases of H.aculeifer and two entomopathogenic nematodes(EPNs) Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Poinar(Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae) (strain HK3,HK3) and Steinernema feltiae Filipjev(Rhabditida: Steinernematidae) (Nemaplus®,SFN) were investigated in pot trials usingseedlings of green beans (Phaseolus vulgarisL.). Ten H. aculeifer adults per pot and 400infective juveniles (IJs) cm–2 soil, of the twoEPN strains were used. In comparison withuntreated control, H. aculeifer reduced theproportion of adult F. occidentalis emergenceby 46%, while SFN and HK3 led to a reductionin adult thrips emergence by 46% and 61%,respectively. Significant differences in adultWFT emergence were found between combinedtreatments of EPNs and H. aculeifer, andindividual applications of EPNs and/or H.aculeifer, with significantly lower adultthrips emergence in the combined treatments. These findings highlight the potential for acombined use of EPNs with H. aculeifer for thecontrol of soil-dwelling stages of thrips.
