Mesostigmatic mites of the Laelapinae Berlese, 1892 (Acari: Laelapidae) are nidicolous arthropods that commonly occur in the fur of Neotropical small mammmals. In this 2-yr study, the laelapine acarofauna associated with the small mammal community in an area of Atlantic forest on Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro State, was examined, including observations on patterns of host specificity, mite dispersal, ecology, and food habits. A total of 1,347 laelapines was sampled from the pelage of 6 species of small mammals (Marmosops incanus, Nectomys squamipes, Oryzomys russatus, Rhipidomys n. sp., Oxymycterus dasytrichus, and Trinomys dimidiatus), all of which occurred exclusively in monoxenous associations with their hosts. No evidence of a blood meal was observed in the gut of the mites. With the exception of the 2 species of Tur, mite populations on hosts were entirely or nearly restricted to adult females. These results, together with some morphological characteristics of laelapines, reinforce the hypotheses that Neotropical laelapine mites are not ectoparasitic, and that females disperse by phoresy.  相似文献

Parasitism plays an essential part in ecology and evolution of host species and understanding the reasons for differential parasitism within and among hosts species is therefore important. Among the very important factors potentially affecting parasitism is the gender of the host. Here, we studied whether either females or males are more likely to harbour parasites among Odonatan insects, by relying on an extensive literature review and new field data. We collected data on numerous dragonfly and damselfly species and their ectoparasites (water mites) and endoparasites (gregarines) to examine the generality of similarities and differences in prevalence, intensity and maximum number of parasites of male and female hosts. We found three main results. Firstly, most of the odonate host species showed no differences between sexes in either gregarine or water mite prevalence and intensity. The only exception was female damselflies’ higher gregarine prevalence and intensity compared to conspecific males. These inequalities in gregarine parasitism may be due to behavioral and physiological differences between conspecific males and females. In comparison, there were no differences in dragonflies between sexes in water mite or gregarine prevalence and intensity. Secondly, damselflies had higher prevalence and intensity levels of both gregarine and water mite parasites compared to dragonflies. Finally, we found a strong species level pattern between female and male parasitism: a certain level of gregarine or water mite parasitism in one sex was matched with a similar parasitism level for the other. This indicates similar exposure and susceptibility to parasites on both sexes. Even though significant differences of parasite levels between the sexes were observed within certain host species, our results strongly suggest that on a general level a more parasitized sex does not exist in the order, Odonata.  相似文献

We evaluated the relationship between infection by proteocephalid cestodes and the sex and weight classes of tucunaré (Cichla piquiti) captured between August 1999 and June 2001 in the Volta Grande Reservoir, Minas Gerais, Brazil. A total of 96 fish, 75.9?±?9.3% males and 88.9?±?6.4% females, were parasitized by Proteocephalus macrophallus and P. microscopicus, with total mean intensities of 76.6?±?23.9 and 145.2?±?36.7, respectively, during this period. In the majority of the months analysed, males showed 71.4-100% prevalence of parasitism and females 80-100%. Although there was no significant difference, females showed a higher mean intensity of infection (145.2?±?36.7) than males (76.6?±?23.9). The nemerteans of the genus Carcinonemertes live in association with decapod crustaceans. Juveniles of Carcinonemertes carcinophila imminuta Humes, 1942 are found in the gills of their hosts. A total of 281 specimens (52 males and 229 females) of Callinectes danae Smith, 1869 and 373 (332 males and 41 females) of Callinectes ornatus Ordway, 1863 were inspected for the occurrence of Carcinonemertes carcinophila imminuta in their gills. The prevalence and mean intensity of infestation by these nemerteans with regard to sex, maturity, condition of adult female crabs (ovigerous or non ovigerous), size (carapace width) and molt stage of hosts were evaluated. A prevalence of infestation by Carcinonemertes carcinophila imminutaof 39.1% was found in the population of Callinectes danae; the mean intensity of infestation was 12.0±2.7, while intensity ranged from 1 to 268. In this host species, significant differences in prevalence were observed between males and females, juveniles and adults and ovigerous and non-ovigerous adult females. Prevalence of infestation did not differ significantly among crabs in different molt stages. Mean intensity did not differ significantly between males and females nor among crabs in different molt stages. Significant differences in mean intensity were observed between ovigerous and non-ovigerous adult females of Callinectes danae. A positive correlation was observed between prevalence of infestation and the carapace width of Callinectes danae females. The prevalence of infestation in Callinectes ornatus was 8.0%; the mean intensity of infestation was 2.7±0.4 while intensity ranged from 1 to 9. Prevalence and mean intensity of infestation did not differ significantly between males and females and juveniles and adults. Prevalence did not differ significantly among crabs in different molt stages. No correlation was observed between the prevalence of infestation and the carapace width of males and females of Callinectes ornatus.  相似文献

Tur megistoproctus, a new species of Laelapinae, is described from the pelage of the echimyid rodent Proechimys dimidiatus from the Atlantic forests of Ilha Grande, south of Rio de Janeiro. Measurements and illustrations are included for females and males. Another laelapine mite species, Tur turki Fonseca, co-occurred with T. megistoproctus in our studies and was recorded from the same host individuals and localities. These 2 laelapine mite species appear to be exclusively associated with a complex of echimyid rodent species (subgenus Trinomys) in the Atlantic forests of southeastern Brazil.  相似文献

In this study, we tested which host species’ characteristics explain the nature and level of parasitism for host damselfly (Coenagrionidae)–water mite (Arrenuridae) parasite associations. Prevalence and intensity of mite parasites, and mite species richness were examined in relation to geographic range size, regional occurrence, relative local abundance, phenology and body size of host damselfly species. A total of 7107 damselfly individuals were collected representing 16 species from 13 sites in southeastern Ontario and southwestern Quebec, Canada. Using comparative methods, differences in prevalence and intensity of parasitism could be predicted by a host species’ geographic range and phenology. Barcoding based on Cytochrome Oxidase I revealed 15 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) for mite species. The number of mite OTUs known to infest a given host species was explained by a host species’ regional occurrence. Our findings demonstrate the need to measure factors at several ecological scales in order to understand the breadth of evolutionary interactions with host–parasite associations and the selective ‘milieu’ for particular species of both hosts and parasites.  相似文献

Trombiculid mites are known to parasitize a variety of amphibian species, yet few comparisons of mite parasitism among amphibian species have been made. In this study, we investigated patterns of trombiculid mite parasitism among 3 plethodontid salamanders (Desmognathus fuscus, Eurycea cirrigera, and Plethodon cylindraceus) in the western Piedmont of North Carolina. All 3 salamander species were parasitized by a single species, Hannemania dunni. Desmognathus fuscus harbored mites more frequently (60.4% of individuals) than E. cirrigera (11.1%) or P. cylindraceus (14.6%). Desmognathus fuscus also had higher parasite loads than E. cirrigera or P. cylindraceus (P < 0.001). Mites on D. fuscus were found more frequently on the limbs than other body locations (P < 0.001). We found no correlation between salamander size and mite abundance (P = 0.689), but salamander collection sites influenced the abundance of mites on D. fuscus (P = 0.002). We found no effect of season on mite abundance in D. fuscus (P = 0.952). Salamander habitat preferences and edaphic or climatic differences among study sites may influence patterns of Hannemania sp. parasitism of salamanders.  相似文献

We studied the parasitism by the chigger mite Eutrombicula alfreddugesi on four sympatric lizard species of the genus Tropidurus in Morro do Chapéu, Bahia state, Brazil: T. hispidus, T. cocorobensis, T. semitaeniatus and T. erythrocephalus. For each species, we investigated the patterns of infestation and analyzed to which extent they varied among the hosts. We calculated the spatial niche breadth of the chigger mite on the body of each host species and the distribution of mites along the hosts' bodies for each Tropidurus species. All four species of Tropidurus at Morro do Chapéu were parasited by the chigger mite, with high (97-100%) prevalences. Host body size significantly explained the intensity of mite infestation for all species, except T. erythrocephalus. The body regions with highest intensity of infestation in the four lizard species were the mite pockets. The spacial niche width of the chigger varied consistently among the four lizards species studied being highest for T. erytrocephalus and lowest for T. cocorobensis. We conclude that the distribution and intensity with which lizards of the genus Tropidurus are infested by Eutrombicula alfreddugesi larvae results from the interaction between aspects of host morphology (such as body size and the occurrence and distribution of mite pockets) and ecology (especially microhabitat use).  相似文献

The helminth parasite fauna of a natural population of the octodontid, Ctenomys talarum, was studied. Parasites that were found included the nematodes Heligmostrongylus sp. and Trichuris sp. Total prevalence of parasitism was 92.3%, mean intensity of infection was 22.7 worms, and mean abundance was 21 worms. Prevalence and mean abundance of infection with Heligmostrongylus sp. were higher in C. talarum males relative to females. Ecological and physiological causes, as well as the mating system of the host species, influence the likelihood of sex differences in parasite infection. The low parasite burden and diversity of C. talarum are associated with restrictions imposed by the subterranean habitat and with life-history traits of these rodents. Whether these findings apply to other Ctenomys spp. is unknown.  相似文献

Birds face varying risk from parasites as they select and utilize habitat. Unfortunately, behavioral and habitat correlates of parasitism in birds are not well documented. This study combines data from a foraging behavior study with results from a banding study to test whether behavior and habitat affect an ectoparasite infestation by trombiculid mite (chigger) larvae on the bird community found in two different coffee agroecosystems in Chiapas, Mexico. Individuals from bird species with regular prevalence ( i.e. , infestation) foraged more frequently in lower vegetative layers and had significantly lower foraging height than those from species with little or no prevalence, suggesting that foraging near the ground increases exposure risk to chigger larvae. Using linear regression, across species, parasite prevalence decreased with increasing average foraging height. Lower infestation rates were found in coffee agroecosystems with higher management intensity ( i.e. , less shade and drier conditions), suggesting that management activities influence infestation rates. Consequently, drier tropical habitats may pose less risk to birds from ectoparasites, though seasonal prevalence was highest during the winter dry season. Although no direct link was found between host condition and infestation by chigger larvae on the wintering grounds, birds were sampled during the middle of the over-wintering period, not the end when infestation could affect birds fattening for migration.  相似文献

Larval water mites are parasites of various insect species. The main aim of the present study was to analyse the host range of spring dwelling water mites. The investigation focuses on seven spring sites in Luxembourg. Some 24 water mite species were recorded either from the benthos or as parasites attached to flying insects captured in emergence traps. For 20 mite species 35 host species from four Nematocera (Diptera) families were recorded. About 80% of the host species and over 90% of the host individuals were Chironomidae, the others were Limoniidae, Dixidae and Simuliidae. For all water mite species recorded we present the observed host spectrum and/or potential hosts as well as the intensity of parasitism and the phenology of the mites. For 10 mite species the hosts were previously unknown. For another ten species the known host spectrum can be confirmed and extended. The host spectrum ranged from one host species (e.g. for Sperchon insignis) to at least 10 host species (for Sperchon thienemanni, Ljania bipapillata), but the effective host range could not be definitively estimated due to the lack of corresponding data. The hypothesised host preference of the water mites, of which most are strictly confined to spring habitats, for similarly spring-preferring hosts could not be proven. The mean intensity of parasitism was highest for Thyas palustris (10.8 larvae/host) and lowest for Sperchon insignis and Hygrobates norvegicus (1.2 larvae per host for each). The hydryphantid mite Thyas palustris occurred at maximal intensity (41 larvae per host) and the two abdominal parasites Ljania bipapillata and Arrenurus fontinalis showed higher mean intensities than the thoracic parasites did. Larval water mites parasitising chironomids did not exhibit a preference for host sex. The phenology of the larval mite species was varied, some species were only present in samples early in the year and others exclusively in the summer. Another species showed two peaks of occurrence, springtime/early summer and late summer/autumn. In conclusion, the water mite larvae in the studied springs showed differences in host spectra and phenology but there are no clear evidences in both for host partitioning. Maybe, the relative low species diversity of water mites in individual springs and the low inter-specific competition for suitable hosts in combination with the high host abundances and species richness makes springs such favourable habitats for the mites.  相似文献

The ecology and epizootology of Microsporidia were studied in the natural population of malarial mosquitoes from Western Siberia over a 30-year period. Symptoms of the disease, host specificity and character of parasite localization in host tissues were investigated. Microsporidia of 9 species from 4 genera, namely Amblyospora, Crepidulospora, Senoma, and Parathelohania, were found in the malarial mosquito larvae from the territory examined. The mosquito species Anopheles messeae was infested by larger number of the microsporidian species, than A. beklemishevi. Spores and active stages of the microsporidian Senoma sp. from mosquito larvae are localized in epithelial cells of the host's intestine. There are no external signs of the infestation. The infested larvae do not die, and the infection proceeds to the pupal stage. Microsporidians of the genus Parathelohania infest larvae of both male and female mosquitoes. The parasites localized in the fat body cells. Body of the infested host gets an opaque white color in the period of spore maturation. The infested larvae perish at 4th stage. Microsporidian spores are formed in the mosquito larvae of both sexes. However, infection rate is much higher in the male larvae (77.8%), than that in the female larvae (22.2%). Symptoms of the disease under the infestation by the genera Crepidulospora and Amblyospora are similar to those under the infestation by Parathelohania sp. There are no external signs of the infestation in the adult mosquito females. In these hosts microsporidians form large two-nuclear spores with a thin capsule accounted for transovarial transmission. An about two times decrease of fertility in the Anopheles messeae females infested by the Parathelohania microsporidians is revealed. Mean number of eggs laid by the infested females was 121, while that of the noninfested ones was 232. Thus, the cause of the decrease in the mosquito abundance is both the elimination of male larvae and the decrease of fertility in females. In Siberia malarial mosquitoes yield 2 or 3 generations per year. Infested larvae are rarely occurred in the beginning of summer. Maximal extensiveness of the invasion may be observed in the end of summer, because of the accumulation of the infection in water bodies. Number of the peaks of infestation coincides with the peaks of abundance of mosquito larvae of 4th stage. Peaks of infestation are delayed as compared with the peaks of mosquito abundance. It is an evidence of the development delay in the infested larvae. Long-term dynamics of the infestation by microsporidians is studied. The epizooty caused by Parathelohania was observed in the malarial mosquitoes in the eighties (with the infestation rate up to 62 %). 1. Sex differences in levels of parasite infection are a common rule in a wide range of mammals, with males usually more susceptible than females. Sex-specific exposure to parasites, e.g. mediated through distinct modes of social aggregation between and within genders, as well as negative relationships between androgen levels and immune defences are thought to play a major role in this pattern. 2. Reproductive female bats live in close association within clusters at maternity roosts, whereas nonbreeding females and males generally occupy solitary roosts. Bats represent therefore an ideal model to study the consequences of sex-specific social and spatial aggregation on parasites' infection strategies. 3. We first compared prevalence and parasite intensities in a host-parasite system comprising closely related species of ectoparasitic mites (Spinturnix spp.) and their hosts, five European bat species. We then compared the level of parasitism between juvenile males and females in mixed colonies of greater and lesser mouse-eared bats Myotis myotis and M. blythii. Prevalence was higher in adult females than in adult males stemming from colonial aggregations in all five studied species. Parasite intensity was significantly higher in females in three of the five species studied. No difference in prevalence and mite numbers was found between male and female juveniles in colonial roosts. 4. To assess whether observed sex-biased parasitism results from differences in host exposure only, or, alternatively, from an active, selected choice made by the parasite, we performed lab experiments on short-term preferences and long-term survival of parasites on male and female Myotis daubentoni. When confronted with adult males and females, parasites preferentially selected female hosts, whereas no choice differences were observed between adult females and subadult males. Finally, we found significantly higher parasite survival on adult females compared with adult males. 5. Our study shows that social and spatial aggregation favours sex-biased parasitism that could be a mere consequence of an active and adaptive parasite choice for the more profitable host.  相似文献

A variety of demographic, seasonal, and site-specific variables may influence parasitism, but the relative importance of these variables is generally unclear. We measured the relative ability of host characteristics, season, and site to explain louse (Trichodectes octomaculatus) and flea (Orchopeas howardi) infestation across 10 populations of raccoons (Procyon lotor). Lice are highly dependent on specific hosts and are predicted to display a relatively strong relationship with factors intrinsic to the host, when compared to fleas, which can infest multiple species and survive off-host for weeks without feeding. We developed a priori models that represented explicit hypotheses and contrasted their ability to predict infestation patterns. While the abundance of lice was seasonal, models that included solely host age and sex best predicted prevalence and abundance, in part because males were infested with 3 times the number of lice than were females. Conversely, flea prevalence and abundance, which peaks sharply in the spring, was best predicted by season; factors intrinsic to the host were relatively unimportant for predicting abundance. These, and other, recent findings emphasize the need to simultaneously assess the relative importance of multiple ecological variables between parasite species when attempting to describe general trends and constraints of host-parasite associations.  相似文献

Blaesoxipha atlanis (Aldrich) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is a common parasitoid of the grasshopper Melanoplus sanguinipes (F.) (Orthoptera: Acrididae) in western Canada. We tested the hypothesis that B. atlanis can develop as either a solitary or a gregarious parasitoid, and assessed the influence of parasitism on the growth and survival of infected grasshoppers. Males and females of M. sanguinipes were parasitized manually with one, two, or three first-instar larvae of B. atlanis in the laboratory. Parasitism was more deleterious to males than females of M. sanguinipes; females are larger than males. Host survival and longevity declined with the number of larvae per host in a sex-specific manner. In females, 39%, 24%, and 8% of hosts containing, respectively, one, two, and three sarcophagid larvae survived parasitism. Although 41% of single-parasitized males survived, all males containing more than one larva died. Variations in host quality as measured by dry mass explained much of the response to parasitism in male, but not female, hosts. Parasitoid larvae, apparently, did not cause significant physical damage to host organs and tissues but instead functioned as a metabolic sink. The greater metabolic activity associated with egg production could account for the relatively higher tolerance to parasitism of female, as opposed to male, grasshoppers. Developmental time, adult size, and percentage survival of B. atlanis declined with the intensity of parasitism, especially in parasitoids developing in male hosts. Females developing gregariously contained fewer ovarioles at eclosion than counterparts developing as solitary larvae. The mean body size of field-collected B. atlanis did not differ from that of laboratory-reared parasitoids developing singly in a host. Gregarious development is an alternative strategy to solitary development that may enable B. atlanis to maintain population numbers during periods of grasshopper scarcity.  相似文献

Prevalence and abundance of Gyrodactylus sp. on the 1993 year-class of sand gobies Pomatoschistus minutus in the Oslo Fjord, Norway, decreased slightly during the cold months, increased as temperature increased in spring, reaching a peak in June, then decreased significantly, corresponding with a decline in the number of hosts from August. Abundance and, especially, prevalence increased again in September, and decreased in late autumn. Death of the most heavily infected hosts, and/or host resistance might be responsible for the decline in parasite numbers on post-spawners in summer. The young of the year (1994 year-class) were probably infected shortly after they commenced benthic life in July, and prevalence and abundance increased significantly throughout late summer and autumn. Parasite abundance on males was significantly higher than on females at the height of the breeding season in June, but significantly lower at the end of the breeding season in July. Two-thirds of the parasites infected the gills, oral cavity and pharynx. The proportion of parasites on the body, head and fins increased on both sexes, but significantly more so on males, during the breeding season of the host, when parasite intensity was highest. Possible routes of transmission of the parasite are discussed.  相似文献

I studied the relationship between sex and infestation with ectoparasites in the water rat Scapteromys aquaticus from La Plata river marshland, Argentina. The Relative Density's Index (RDI) for males was 3.90% (females 3.60%). A total of 2653 ectoparasites were collected on 33 male hosts, and 1945 on 31 females. Ectoparasite specific richness (S) and diversity (H) were S = 14, H = 1.17 on males, and S = 10, H = 1.52 on females. The similarity between male and female rodents according to their ectoparasites was 75.00%. Although no ectoparasite species showed significant mean abundance (MA) differences between host sexes (p < 0.05), and only Laelaps manguinhosi prevalence was significantly higher on male hosts (N = 2.01, p < 0.05) in this study, there are reasons to think that the sex of the water rat affects ectoparasite burden and specific richness. This information has epidemiological potential because the closely related Scapteromys tumidus is involved in the transmission of Rickettsia coronii, which causes Marsella fever in humans.  相似文献

The parasite fauna of 4 intertidal grapsid crabs from New Zealand was studied between 1998 and 2000. The occurrence of an undescribed entoniscid species, Portunion sp. (Isopoda: Epicaridea), is presented. Portunion sp. was found in Cyclograpsus lavauxi (34.1%, n = 1650), Hemigrapsus crenulatus (19.0%, n = 2300), and Helice crassa (11.6%, n = 825) but was absent from Hemigrapsus sexdentatus (n = 636). Parasitized hosts contained mostly 1 female Portunion sp. but occasionally up to 7 females were found. One to 3 dwarf males typically occurred on each mature female Portunion sp. Most developmental stages of female Portunion sp. were found throughout the year, demonstrating that reproduction and infection occurred continuously. Portunion sp. differentially affected male and female hosts. Prevalence was generally higher in male hosts than in female hosts and increased significantly with host size. Female hosts were castrated, whereas males were not. Portunion sp., therefore, influenced the operational sex ratio in its host species, causing a more male-biased ratio.  相似文献

This study examined whether ecoparasitic larval Unionicola foili exhibited a sex bias when infecting laboratory populations of the host insect Chironomus tentans and whether an association with male or female midges increased the likelihood of larval mites returning to the aquatic habitat. When laboratory populations of C. tentans were exposed to larval U. foili, there was a higher prevalence of mites among female hosts at emergence (17 of 30 males vs. 25 of 30 females infected by mites). However, there was no significant difference in the distribution or abundance of larvae among infected male (mean = 2.3 larvae per host) and female (mean = 2.6 larvae per host) midges. Larval mites parasitizing both male and female chironomids were more likely to return to water than could be expected by chance. Mite larvae infesting female C. tentans were more likely to return to water when female hosts deposited egg masses in water, suggesting that oviposition plays an important role in cueing larvae parasitizing female midges to detach. The mechanism responsible for increasing the likelihood that mites parasitizing male hosts return to water remains unclear. Future studies will address the possibility of parasite-mediated changes in host behavior.  相似文献

Effects of parasitism, polydnavirus, and venom of the endoparasitoid Glyptapanteles liparidis on Lymantria dispar larvae infected with the microsporidium Vairimorpha sp. and uninfected hosts were studied. We tested the impact on growth and development of hosts, as well as on microsporidian infection. Both parasitism and polydnavirus/venom treatment alone caused a slight increase in growth rate and relative growth rate in uninfected fourth instar hosts. This effect was more pronounced with the addition of Vairimorpha infection. With no parasitism, however, infection reduced host growth markedly. Microsporidiosis delayed larval molts of L. dispar, and additional polydnavirus/venom treatment or parasitization induced significantly earlier molting. Polydnavirus/venom treatment of uninfected L. dispar resulted in prolonged larval development due to supernumerary molts and in higher pupal mortality. Infected larvae treated with polydnavirus/venom died earlier than infected larvae that were not treated and produced more Vairimorpha spores per unit fresh mass of the host.  相似文献
