Short day induction in Bougainvillea “San Diego Red” increases photosynthetic rates in mature leaves; gibberellic acid treatments, which inhibit flowering, cancel the short day effect. These results lend support of a nutritional hypothesis that suggests that in Bougainvillea assimilate supply to the reproductive axis increases before floral initiation and during flower development.  相似文献

The Marquillo × Kenya Farmer 1 “grass-clump” dwarf selection of Triticum aestivum L. was grown under continuous 2000 foot candle light and several regimes of alternating 16° and 26° temperatures combined in total cycle lengths of 6, 12, 24, or 48 hr. Plants at 26° grew as normal wheat. Those exposed to 0.25 to 2 hr of 16° per cycle showed typical “grass-clump” dwarf characteristics which were independent of the cycle length. Treatments with 16° exposures of 4 to 8 hr per 24 hr and 12 to 16 hr per 48 hr exhibited vegetative “grass-clump” dwarfness for 40 days but later displayed extensive reproductive development. Longer 16° treatments killed the plants at a very early stage of vegetative development before floral initiation. The data supported an hypothesis that all 4 growth habits were related to the temperature sensitivity of the vegetative meristem. The cessation of meristem development was possibly due to the accumulation of a stable inhibitory substance produced at low temperatures.  相似文献

Benzyladenine (BA) and short day (SD) induction promote and gibberellic acid (GA) inhibits flowering in Bougainvillea “San Diego Red.” GA is an overriding vegetative signal maintaining plants in a vegetative state even when BA is applied in SD conditions. SD promotes a more rapid conversion of BA to the ribotide and other “polar derivatives” (containing adenine derivatives). This effect of SD on BA metabolism is seen in root, stem, and apical bud tissues and is completely prevented by prior or simultaneous application of GA. GA treatment reduces the rate of polar derivative formation to that found in plants held in long days. The working hypothesis is that SD promotes flowering in Bougainvillea owing to reduced transport of gibberellins from leaves to roots and apical buds permitting metabolism of cytokinin, and perhaps other purine bases, to more polar forms that are more readily translocated and active in promoting reproductive development of the inflorescences axes.  相似文献

The distribution of phospholipids in developing soybean seeds [Glycine max (L.) Merr., var. “Chippewa 64,” “Harosoy 63,” “Wayne,” and “Clark 63”] was followed. From 30 to 60 days after flowering expressed as mole per cent of phospholipid phosphorus phosphatidic acid decreased from 14.8 to 9.1; phosphatidylinositol increased from 0 to 9.1; phosphatidylcholine increased from 8.2 to 9.8; phosphatidylethanolamine increased from 5.3 to 8.6; phosphatidylglycerol increased from 3.2 to 4.8; diphosphatidylglycerol increased from 2.7 to 4.1; and N-acylphosphatidylethanolamine decreased from 65.8 to 54.6. However, from 60 days after flowering to maturity, phosphatidic acid decreased to 0; phosphatidylinositol increased roughly 2-fold; phosphatidylcholine increased roughly 4.7-fold; phosphatidylethanolamine increased 3-fold; N-acylphosphatidylethanolamine decreased 11-fold; whereas phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol remained essentially constant. Percentages of individual phospholipid species were not statistically different between any two varieties at a given time period.  相似文献

Attention was focused on the maternal tissues of the seed coat and embryo sac. A comparative study of the specificity of the Reiter protein complement fixation (RPCF) test and the Treponema pallidum immobilization (TPI) test on 180 sera showed that the results in 178 instances or 98.9 per cent were in agreement.The sensitivity of the RPCF test, when compared to the TPI test, on 189 sera from patients known to have syphilis was in agreement in 182 or 96.3 per cent, assuming a correlation exists between positive TPI and both the “reactive” or “weakly reactive” RPCF test results.As to reproducibility of results, the RPCF test results agreed in 84 of the 87 sera tested (95.4 per cent). The sera were tested at least three times on different days.Anticomplementary reactions were observed in three of 91 normal sera.  相似文献

Bet‐hedging via polyandry (spreading the extinction risk of the female''s lineage over multiple males) may explain the evolution of female multiple mating, which is found in a wide range of animal and plant taxa. This hypothesis posits that females can increase their fitness via polyandrous mating when “unsuitable” males (i.e., males causing reproductive failure for various reasons) are frequent in the population and females cannot discriminate such unsuitable mates. Although recent theoretical studies have shown that polyandry can operate as a bet‐hedging strategy, empirical tests are scarce. In the present study, we tested the bet‐hedging polyandry hypothesis by using the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. We compared female reproductive success between monandry and polyandry treatments when females mated with males randomly collected from an experimental population, including 20% irradiated (infertile) males. In addition, we evaluated geometric mean fitness across multiple generations as the index of adaptability of bet‐hedging traits. Polyandrous females showed a significantly higher egg hatching rate and higher geometric mean fitness than monandrous females. These results strongly support the bet‐hedging polyandry hypothesis.  相似文献

Chromosomal evolution is widely considered an important driver of speciation because it can promote the establishment of reproductive barriers. Karyotypic reorganization is also expected to affect the mean phenotype, as well as its development and patterns of phenotypic integration, through processes such as variation in genetic linkage between quantitative trait loci or between regulatory regions and their targets. Here we explore the relationship between chromosomal evolution and phenotypic integration by analyzing a well-known house mouse parapatric contact zone between a highly derived Robertsonian (Rb) race (2n = 22) and populations with standard karyotype (2n = 40). Populations with hybrid karyotypes are scattered throughout the hybrid zone connecting the two parental races. Using mandible shape data and geometric morphometrics, we test the hypothesis that patterns of integration progressively diverge from the “normal” integration pattern observed in the standard race as they accumulate Rb fusions. We find that the main pattern of integration observed between the posterior and anterior part of the mandible can be largely attributed to allometry. We find no support for a gradual increase in divergence from normal patterns of integration as fusions accumulate. Surprisingly, however, we find that the derived Rb race (2n = 22) has a distinct allometric trajectory compared with the standard race. Our results suggest that either individual fusions disproportionately affect patterns of integration or that there are mechanisms which “purge” extreme variants in hybrids (e.g. reduced fitness of hybrid shape).  相似文献

The production of seed in flowering plants is complicated by the need to first invest in reproductive shoots, inflorescences, flowers, and fruit. Furthermore, in many species, it will be months between plants generating flowers and setting seed. How can plants therefore produce an optimal seed-set relative to environmental resources when the “reproductive architecture” that supports seed-set needs to be elaborated so far in advance? Here, we address this question by investigating the spatio-temporal control of reproductive architecture in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and Brassica napus. We show that resource and resource-related signals such as substrate volume play a key role in determining the scale of reproductive effort, and that this is reflected in the earliest events in reproductive development, which broadly predict the subsequent reproductive effort. We show that a series of negative feedbacks both within and between developmental stages prevent plants from over-committing to early stages of development. These feedbacks create a highly plastic, homeostatic system in which additional organs can be produced in the case of reproductive failure elsewhere in the system. We propose that these feedbacks represent an “integrated dominance” mechanism that allows resource use to be correctly sequenced between developmental stages to optimize seed set.  相似文献

Protein synthesis was studied during precocious and natural soybean seed (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) maturation. Developing seeds harvested 35 days after flowering were precociously matured through controlled dehydration. Total soluble proteins and proteins labeled with [35S]methionine were extracted from control, developing seeds and from precociously and naturally matured seeds and were analyzed by one-dimensional PAGE and fluorography. The results demonstrated that several polypeptides which were designated “mature polypeptides,” were synthesized de novo during precocious and natural seed maturation. Two of these polypeptides, 31 and 128 kilodalton in mass, also stained intensely with Coomassie blue, suggesting their abundant accumulation during seed maturation. Results from in vitro translation experiments showed that the mRNAs corresponding to these “maturation polypeptides” accumulated during precocious maturation and in naturally matured seeds, but not in seeds freshly harvested 35 days after flowering (control). The role of the “maturation polypeptides” is currently unknown; however, their presence and that of their corresponding mRNAs was coincident with the ability of matured seeds to establish seedling growth. This study has demonstrated that precocious seed maturation treatments may be extremely useful for investigations of metabolic events and molecular control mechanisms affecting soybean seed maturation.  相似文献

The relationship between the relative abundance of ureides ([ureide-N/ureide-N plus nitrate-N] × 100) in the shoot axis (stems plus petioles), nodulated roots and leaflets of “Bragg” soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merrill) and the symbiotic dependence of these plants was examined under glass-house conditions. Plants, inoculated with effective Rhizobium japonicum CB1809, were grown with their roots exposed continuously to a nutrient solution containing either 0, 1.5, 3.0, 6.0 or 12.0 millimolar NO3-N per liter. Nodulation and N2-acetylene fixation were correlated inversely with the level of nitrate. Seasonal acetylene reduction profiles for each of the nitrate treatments were integrated and the symbiotic dependence ([N2 fixed per total plant N] × 100) determined using a conversion ratio of 1.5:1 (acetylene reduced:N2 fixed), calculated from the zero NO3 treatment. Examination of the nitrogenous solutes of the shoot axis and nodulated roots showed linear relationships between the relative abundance of ureides and the symbiotic dependence of the plants. Two standard curves, depicting these relationships during vegetative and reproductive growth, were drawn for each plant part. The overriding effect of plant age invalidated any attempt to develop a standard relationship for leaflets. Data from two diurnal studies suggested that relative ureides were insensitive to diurnal fluctuations, thus simplifying sampling procedures. Plant material could be stored at ambient temperatures (20-30°C) for up to 24 h without affecting the relative concentration of ureides and nitrate. It is suggested that the shoot axis provides the most suitable target organ when using this technique as a quantitative assay for N2 fixation because of ease of sampling of these tissues, especially with field-grown plants.  相似文献

The production in 1915 of herpes zoster or “posterior” poliomyelitis in animals with a streptococcus led to further research on the etiologic importance of streptococci in “anterior” poliomyelitis.A specific streptococcus was demonstrated consistently in persons with poliomyelitis and in well persons having contact with them or merely inhabiting an area in which poliomyelitis was epidemic. That the organism was not present in areas remote from contact with the disease was likewise demonstrated.The streptococcus has been isolated from filtrates of poliomyelitis virus and from the tissues and exudates which harbor the virus. It appears in the spinal fluid in the preparalytic stage of poliomyelitis and disappears from the spinal fluid during the severe stage of the disease.Antibody and antigen prepared from the streptococcus were used to determine the presence of antigen and antibody indicative of streptococcal infection in many patients with poliomyelitis and in well persons. The intensity of reaction indicating specific streptococcal antigen was directly proportional to the degree of paralysis in patients; the reaction was greater in persons whose age, sex and previous isolation from the disease would normally indicate greater susceptibility. The test for antibody gave opposite results.Specific agglutinins for the streptococcus and neutralizing antibody for the virus were present consistently in the serum of persons and monkeys during recovery from poliomyelitis.Virus produced in vitro from the associated streptococcus caused all the clinical and pathologic features of poliomyelitis in monkeys inoculated with it, and the animals that recovered from the disease thus induced were proved to be immune thereafter to the natural virus.Antistreptococcic serum prepared in horses was used to treat poliomyelitis. In a group of monkeys inoculated with the virus of the disease, 6 per cent of those receiving the serum before inoculation died of the disease; of the control group, 82 per cent. In a series of poliomyelitis patients treated with the serum the mortality rate was 8 per cent; in a control series, 21 per cent. In a series treated in all stages of the disease by the author, 10 per cent died; of those who did not receive the serum, 25 per cent.An antibody has been prepared from the streptococcus which appears to prevent paralysis and otherwise mitigate poliomyelitis and to provide immunization from the disease.The conclusion is reached that the virus of poliomyelitis is a form of the specific streptococcus, which is the agent in primary infections and in the development of the immunizing antibody.  相似文献

An attempt is made to characterize the rapidly labeled hybridizable RNA of L5178Y mouse leukemic cells which has been shown to have similar base sequences when synthesized in two different stages of the cell cycle. The size of rapidly labeled RNA molecules was heterogeneous. For labeling times of 20 min or less, the per cent of hybridization was maximal. With longer labeling times, the per cent of hybridization decreased as radioactivity appeared in long-lived species of low hybridization efficiency; the radioactivity profile resembled the optical density profile in sucrose gradients. The lifetime of newly synthesized hybridizable RNA was studied by pulse labeling exponentially growing cells and then “chasing” with nonradioactive uridine. The per cent of hybridization was studied as a function of chase time. Three RNA groups, which comprised different proportions of rapidly labeled hybridizable RNA, were distinguished. The short-lived group had a half-life of 10 min, much less than the values reported in the literature for messenger RNA of mammalian cells. The half-life of 1-1½ hr observed for a medium-lived group more closely corresponds to that of messenger RNA. A long-lived group had a half-life of approximately 20 hr. Specific activity measurements during chase indicate the presence of a “pool” of labeled uridine derivatives. The uridine of this pool appears to be nonexchangeable with but dilutable by exogenous uridine. A nontoxic concentration of actinomycin D was added to the chase media in an attempt to block the “pool effect”. A rapidly degradable RNA was demonstrable both by specific activity and per cent of hybridization measurements.  相似文献

Global warming is causing ocean warming and acidification. The distribution of Heliocidaris erythrogramma coincides with the eastern Australia climate change hot spot, where disproportionate warming makes marine biota particularly vulnerable to climate change. In keeping with near-future climate change scenarios, we determined the interactive effects of warming and acidification on fertilization and development of this echinoid. Experimental treatments (20–26°C, pH 7.6–8.2) were tested in all combinations for the ‘business-as-usual’ scenario, with 20°C/pH 8.2 being ambient. Percentage of fertilization was high (>89%) across all treatments. There was no difference in percentage of normal development in any pH treatment. In elevated temperature conditions, +4°C reduced cleavage by 40 per cent and +6°C by a further 20 per cent. Normal gastrulation fell below 4 per cent at +6°C. At 26°C, development was impaired. As the first study of interactive effects of temperature and pH on sea urchin development, we confirm the thermotolerance and pH resilience of fertilization and embryogenesis within predicted climate change scenarios, with negative effects at upper limits of ocean warming. Our findings place single stressor studies in context and emphasize the need for experiments that address ocean warming and acidification concurrently. Although ocean acidification research has focused on impaired calcification, embryos may not reach the skeletogenic stage in a warm ocean.  相似文献

Epithelial tissues respond to a wide variety of environmental and genotoxic stresses. As an adaptive mechanism, cells can deviate from their natural paths to acquire new identities, both within and across lineages. Under extreme conditions, epithelial tissues can utilize “shape‐shifting” mechanisms whereby they alter their form and function at a tissue‐wide scale. Mounting evidence suggests that in order to acquire these alternate tissue identities, cells follow a core set of “tissue logic” principles based on developmental paradigms. Here, we review the terminology and the concepts that have been put forward to describe cell plasticity. We also provide insights into various cell intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including genetic mutations, inflammation, microbiota, and therapeutic agents that contribute to cell plasticity. Additionally, we discuss recent studies that have sought to decode the “syntax” of plasticity—i.e., the cellular and molecular principles through which cells acquire new identities in both homeostatic and malignant epithelial tissues—and how these processes can be manipulated for developing novel cancer therapeutics.  相似文献

Plants of the wilty tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) mutant, flacca, and of the normal cultivar Rheinlands Ruhm growing under either “normal” or high humidity were used in this research. Under normal humidity, RNase activity was much higher in mutant plants in which abscisic acid (ABA) and water content were lower than in the normal plant. The mutant also contained less RNA and protein per cell and less soluble RNA relative to ribosomal RNA as compared with the normal genotype. In ABA-treated mutant plants, RNase activity decreased while RNA, protein, the ratio of soluble to ribosomal RNA and water content increased.  相似文献
