5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is an essential precursor of all tetrapyrrole compounds such as chlorophylls and heme in plants. It has also been suggested widely for applications to crops to enhance growth and production as a plant growth regulator. However, how successful ALA can be used in fruit production was rarely reported. We conducted a field experiment at eight locations in four provinces across eastern China; and the results showed that application of ALA solutions to ‘Fuji’ apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) fruits 20 days prior to harvest significantly increased the anthocyanin content in the fruit skin. Also, ALA treatment increased the anthocyanin content of the detached apple skin in a growth chamber. Results from the semi-quantitive RT-PCR analysis showed that ALA induced gene expressions related to anthocyanin biosynthesis, including the structural genes Pal, Chs and Ufgt, and regulatory genes Myb, bHLH and Wd40. When levulinic acid (LA), an inhibitor of ALA dehydrase, was added, ALA promotion of anthocyanin accumulation and up-regulation of gene expressions were inhibited. Taken together, these results suggest that ALA promotion of anthocyanin accumulation in apples was facilitated by the up-regulation of gene expression, which might be related to the conversion of ALA to porphyrins.  相似文献

Structural and regulatory genes control fruit colors in plants. Real-time quantitative PCR results showed significantly higher expression levels of structural genes (FpCHS, FpDFR, FpANS, and FpUFGT) as well as of the regulatory gene MYB10 in red fruits of Fragaria pentaphylla compared to white fruits. These genes were strongly associated with anthocyanin accumulation within fruits. The full-length sequence of the FpDFR gene in red fruits of F. pentaphylla had a length of 2080 bp, was separated by five introns, and shared 95% homology with the F. vesca DFR sequence. Twenty-seven SNPs were detected in the FpDFR gDNA sequences between red and white fruits. Among these, transition substitutions were more frequent than transversions (66.7% vs. 33.3%), and a larger number of nucleotide variants existed in introns compared to exons (70.4% vs. 29.6%). A Chi-square test showed only three SNPs significantly associated with fruit color. Combined with structural analyses of the FpDFR protein and an expression analysis of the anthocyanin pathway genes, these results indicate that trans-regulation might contribute to color control in F. pentaphylla.  相似文献

Background

For the first time, a morphometric characterization of chaura (Gaultheria pumila) fruits has been conducted between natural populations growing in the Villarrica National Park, Araucania Region, Chile. Chaura is a native Ericaceae from Chile that produces aromatic and tasty fruits which could be of agricultural interest.

Results

To influence the decision for a further domestication of G. pumila, both the fruit sizes (indicator of productivity) and the nutritional properties of the fruits have been determined from different subpopulations. Samples were a total of 74 plants and 15 fruits per plant which were randomly harvested following its natural distribution around the Villarrica volcano. Altogether, fresh weight, shape, color, diameter in the pole and the equatorial dimensions were determined as phenotypic traits of the G. pumila fruits. Meanwhile the total soluble solids, anthocyanin and pectin contents were calculated as nutritional traits of the Chaura fruits. Results showed a high phenotypic diversity between the sampled population with three main fruit shapes and three predominant colors. The round shapes were the most abundant, whereas a significant correlation was found among fruit size with weight and color. The highest fresh weight (597.3 mg), pole diameter (7.1 mm) and equatorial diameter (6.5 mm) were estimated in the pink color fruits.

Conclusions

The total amount of anthocyanin was higher in red fruits, while the maximum pectin content was obtained in the round white fruits. Overall results must pave the way for a further domestication and introduction of the Chaura species in the agro-productive system in Chile.  相似文献

The light requirement and low-temperature stimulation of anthocyanin synthesis in peel of apple ( Malus domestica ) and pears ( Pyrus communis ) and the presence of anthocyanins in immature fruits are not congruent with a visual function in dispersal. We hypothesized that anthocyanins afford photoprotection to peel during low-temperature-induced light stress and that the protection is not a fortuitous side-effect of light absorption by anthocyanin. The extent of photoinhibition at harvest and after light stress treatment in pear cultivars differing in redness decreased with increasing red color on the sun-exposed sides of fruits. Green-shaded sides of the pears showed comparable levels of photoinhibition indicating that pears did not differ in their inherent photosensitivity. Apple and pear peel show considerable short-term fluctuation in redness in response to temperature, with red color increasing rapidly in response to low temperature and just as quickly fading in response to high temperature. Briefly, shading pears and apples during cold conditions for 2 days reduced the accumulation of anthocyanin and increased the photosensitivity of peel. Subsequent shading during warm conditions did not affect the accumulation of anthocyanin or the photosensitivity of peel indicating that the response at low temperature was not due to shade adaptation. The assessment of photosystem II (PSII) efficiency and quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence between 16 and 40°C indicated that 'Forelle' pear peel was particularly sensitive to photostress at low temperature. The photosynthetic system in mature 'Forelle' leaves was comparatively much less sensitive to light stress at low temperature. Results support the view that anthocyanins are adaptable light screens deployed to modulate light absorption in sensitive tissues such as fruit peel in response to environmental triggers such as cold front snaps.  相似文献
