Water quality, diatom species composition and biomass estimates were performed in the Gharasou River in western Iran. Five sites along the River Gharasou were sampled every month from April to September 2005. Physical and chemical factors (pH, NO3–N, PO4–P, dissolved oxygen, total suspend solids, total dissolved solids, conductivity, turbidity, chemical oxygen demand and biological oxygen demand) were measured along with biological properties of the periphyton including biomass, ash-free dry mass, chlorophyll-a concentration and the taxonomic composition diatom assemblages. Information from the diatom assemblage was used to calculate the Trophic Diatom Index and biovolume. The TDI was significantly correlated with measures of human disturbance at the sites (e.g. PO4–P, NO3–N and dissolved oxygen) as well as to biomass measures (chlorophyll a, ash-free dry mass and biovolume). The sensitivity of the TDI and its component metrics to environmental stressors supports the use of this index for monitoring ecological conditions in streams in Iran and to aid diagnosis of the cause of their impairment. We studied the influence of habitat and increased mineral phosphorus and nitrogen loading on the extracellular activity of five selected hydrolases and pH in the trap fluid of the aquatic carnivorous plants, Utricularia vulgaris, U. australis, and U. foliosa (Lentibulariaceae). Enzyme activities in the trap fluid were determined using fluorometry. Phosphatase exhibited the highest activities in the traps of the European species as well as field-grown tropical U. foliosa. Trap enzyme production appeared to be uninfluenced by elevated dissolved mineral N or P concentrations both in the trap and ambient environment and thus, it seems to be constitutive. Enzyme activity in the trap fluid was determined by species and environmental conditions and varied significantly among sites within a single species. Trap fluid pH was between 4.2–5.1 in U. vulgaris and U. australis but between 5.7–7.3 in U. foliosa and seems to be regulated by the traps.  相似文献

The study assessed the composition and abundance of insect assemblages associated with two submerged macrophytes, Lagarosiphon ilicifolius and Vallisneria aethiopica, in fishless ponds. Six ponds were used, with each plant occurring singly in two ponds, whilst the remainder had both plants. The insects were sampled using a 500-μm mesh. The number of insect taxa, diversity and total abundance on Lagarosiphon were greater than on Vallisneria when the plants occurred in separate ponds. In ponds comprising both plants, the total insect abundance on Lagarosiphon was greater than on Vallisneria. In all ponds, anisopteran naiads were dominant. Hemicordulia, Diplacodes and Trithemis made up 36.2, 27.1 and 15.2%, respectively, of the total number of insects on Lagarosiphon in single plant ponds. Trithemis was the only odonate in ponds comprised exclusively of Vallisneria and made up 68.7% of insects. In ponds that were cultured with both plants, four anisopteran taxa, Hemicordulia, Diplacodes, Trithemis and Tramea, were collected. In single plant ponds, the body-size class distribution of naiads on Lagarosiphon was characterised by a broader range, with significantly greater numbers of smaller and larger size classes than on Vallisneria (Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, P < 0.05). The study shows that in fishless waters, epiphytic insect assemblages may differ between the two plant species, especially when they are widely separated in space, probably due to greater predator–prey interactions on Vallisneria than on Lagarosiphon. The two plants may also differentially affect water physicochemical conditions, which may possibly influence insect ovipositing behaviour, and so affect insect community assemblage.  相似文献

The Dindifelou fall, located in south‐eastern Senegal, receives its water from discharging springs located in Dande plate‐land. These waters form, at the foot of the cliff, a pond that drains into the Thiokoye, a tributary of the Gambia River. The water quality of the pond and the stream is very good based on physicochemical analyses. Around the pond region, a microclimate characterized by a higher humidity and a lower temperature compared with the surrounding area is present. Diatoms study is carried out in different habitat types associated with this fall. The samples were taken by scraping the surface of rocks and rinsing fern leaves with sparkling water. Dande plate‐land is made of Upper Proterozoic sandstones whose gravity accumulations litter the bottom of the pond and the stream. This study allowed us to inventory 61 species and varieties of diatoms belonging to 28 genera. The most represented genera are Achnanthidium (ten species), Eunotia and Pinnularia (eight species each). Twelve species and varieties are reported for the first time in Senegambia including five of the genera Achnanthidium. The microflora is dominated by Achnantidium minutissimum and Achnanthidium catenatum, followed by Ulnaria ulna and various species of the genera Eunotia and Brachysira. Aerial habitats are more diversified here than the epilithic samples.  相似文献

Four column-type sequential aerobic sludge blanket reactors were fed with phenol as the sole carbon and energy source and operated at loading rates of 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 kg phenol m–3 day–1. The results indicated that phenol loading exerted a profound influence on the structure, activity and metabolism of the aerobic granules. Compact granules with good settling ability were maintained at loadings up to 2.0 kg phenol m–3 day–1, and structurally weakened granules with enhanced production of extracellular polymers and proteins and significantly lower hydrophobicities were observed at the highest loading of 2.5 kg phenol m–3 day–1. Specific oxygen uptake rate, catechol 2,3-dioxygenase (C23O) and catechol 1,2-dioxygenase (C12O) activities peaked at a loading of 2.0 kg phenol m–3 day–1, and declined thereafter. Granules degraded phenol completely in all four reactors, mainly through the meta cleavage pathway as C23O activities were significantly higher than C12O activities. At the highest loading applied, the anabolism and catabolism of microorganisms were regulated such that phenol degradation proceeded exclusively via the meta pathway, apparently to produce more energy for overstimulation of protein production against phenol toxicity. This work contributes to a better understanding of the ability of aerobic granules to handle high-strength industrial wastewaters containing chemicals that are normally inhibitory to microbial growth.  相似文献

The prevalence of ten antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) was evaluated in a total of 616 Escherichia coli isolates from swine manure, swine lagoon effluent, and from soils that received lagoon effluent on a commercial swine farm site in Sampson County, North Carolina (USA). Isolates with ARGs coding for streptomycin/spectinomycin (aadA/strA and strB), tetracycline (tetA and tetB), and sulfonamide (sul1) occurred most frequently (60.6–91.3%). The occurrence of E. coli isolates that carried aadA, tetA, tetB, and tetC genes was significantly more frequent in soil samples (34.097.2%) than in isolates from lagoon samples (20.9–90.6%). Furthermore, the frequency of isolates that contain genes coding for aadA and tetB was significantly greater in soil samples (82.6–97.2%) when compared to swine manure (16.8–86.1%). Isolates from the lagoon that carried tetA, tetC, and sul3 genes were significantly more prevalent during spring (63.3–96.7%) than during winter (13.1–67.8%). The prevalence of isolates from the lagoon that possessed the strA, strB, and sul1 resistance genes was significantly more frequent during the summer (90.0–100%) than during spring (66.6–80.0%). The data suggest that conditions in the lagoon, soil, and manure may have an impact on the occurrence of E. coli isolates with specific ARGs. Seasonal variables seem to impact the recovery isolates with ARGs; however, ARG distribution may be associated with mobile genetic elements or a reflection of the initial numbers of resistant isolates shed by the animals.  相似文献

This study compared the spatial and temporal patterns of red hind, Epinephelus guttatus, movement and migration from annual spawning aggregations on St Thomas (STT) and St Croix (STX), United States Virgin Islands. Around STT E. guttatus migrated 6–33 km from a functional spawning migration area of 500 km2 and around STX E. guttatus migrated 5–18 km from an area of 90 km2. Similarities between sites were found in regards to timing of movement, temporal and spatial changes in sex ratios, annual and lunar predictability and were synchronized with environmental cues. E. guttatus spawning aggregations in the Virgin Islands occur between the winter solstice (i.e., after December 20) and about February 20 of any year and show a distinctive peak 20–40 days after the winter solstice. Spawning typically occurred during periods of declining seawater temperature and slacking currents within a temperature range of 26–27.5°C and current speed of 2.5–3.5 cm s−1. Males arrived early to spawning sites and stayed longer than females. These gender-based behavioral patterns are important to E. guttatus reproductive dynamics and must be factored into future studies and the design of fisheries regulations to ensure sustainability of spawning aggregation sites. The predictability of E. guttatus spawning aggregations relative to the winter solstice will be extremely beneficial for defining the temporal and spatial aspects of area closures. The consistency and synchrony of movement and migration will improve both the efficiency of planning research and monitoring programs and directing enforcement activities during critical time periods. Applying this knowledge strategically will maximize the limited resources available for research and enforcement and lead to greater protection of spawning aggregations.  相似文献

Human activities such as fragmentation and selective logging of forests can threaten population viability by modification of ecological and genetic processes. Using six microsatellite markers, we examined the effects of forest fragmentation and local disturbance on the genetic diversity and structure of adult trees (N = 110) and seedlings (N = 110) of Prunus africana in Kakamega Forest, western Kenya. Taking samples of adults and seedlings allowed for study of changes in genetic diversity and structure between generations. Thereby, adults reflect the pattern before and seedlings after intensive human impact. Overall, we found 105 different alleles in the six loci examined, 97 in adults and 88 in seedlings. Allelic richness and heterozygosity were significantly lower in seedlings than in adults. Inbreeding increased from adult tree to seedling populations. Genetic differentiation of adult trees was low (overall F ST = 0.032), reflecting large population sizes and extensive gene flow in the past. Genetic differentiation of seedlings was slightly higher (overall F ST = 0.044) with all of the 28 pairwise F ST-values being significantly different from zero. These results suggest that human disturbance in Kakamega Forest has significantly reduced allelic richness and heterozygosity, increased inbreeding and slightly reduced gene flow in P. africana in the past 80–100 years.  相似文献

Diatom-based stream bioassessment is constantly being improved to meet the increasing demands of water quality management. This study examined whether percentage of live diatoms (PLD) in periphyton communities can be used as a metric of human disturbance in streams and rivers. The analyzed dataset (587 sites) was collected over the course of 3 years (2000–2002) from 12 Western US states (US EPA’s Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program). The mean PLD in Western streams and rivers was low (34.50%) and highly variable (range 2.08–97.02%). It did not differ significantly between the Mountains (MT, 36.38%) and the Xeric (XE, 35.49%) ecoregions, but it was significantly (P < 0.05) greater than that in the Plains ecoregion (PL, 28.27%). PLD distinguished reference from impacted sites in the MT (P < 0.05) and somewhat in the PL (P = 0.05). However, PLD exhibited opposite patterns in the two ecoregions. It increased with human disturbance in the MT and decreased in the PL due to a potential subsidy-stress gradient of available resources. The different pattern may be largely interpreted by the quality of the reference conditions in each ecoregion. In the MT ecoregion, the selected reference sites may resemble very closely the natural state in this ecoregion. In contrast, human disturbance is much more pervasive in the low-land PL ecoregion and the “reference sites” may reflect the best attainable conditions in this ecoregion. PLD as a metric has potential for monitoring human disturbance of streams, if reference sites represent natural conditions and differing responses among regions are included in expected effects.  相似文献

The four kinds of sites under different kinds of human disturbances, i.e. a farmland area, a rotational-grazing area, an over-grazing area and a prohibited-grazing area, were selected in the typical region of the Alashan Desert of Inner Mongolia from April to October in 2002, 2003 and 2004 respectively. The fluctuating tendency of rodent communities and the sensitive response of their populations were studied using mark-recapture and trap-day methods. The four kinds of mark-recapture samples and line samples were taken in different human disturbance areas. The area of the mark-recapturing sample was 0.95 hm2 and that of the line sample was 10 km2. The samples were collected every month in the mark-recapturing sites for four consecutive days and in line sites in April, July and October every year. The variable matrix was composed of the numbers of captured rodents of the rodent communities. The sensitive response of the populations in the communities was analyzed with principal component analysis (PCA). Results showed that there were different types of rodent communities under different kinds of human disturbance on two scales in three years. In each scale, there were large differences in both the number of species and the number of main population in the rodent communities under different kinds of human disturbance on the farmland area and over-grazing area especially. The results of PCA showed that the sensitive response of the populations of the commu nities was significantly different under different kinds of human disturbance on the two scales in the three years. Four pine forests (6–10, 11–15, 16–20, and 31–40 year-old) located in the Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake National Reserve and 7 pine forests (1–5, 6–10, 11–15, 16–20, 21–30, 31–40, and more than 50 year-old) located in the non-protective area near the national reserve were selected. Three replications of each forest was set and a total of 33 sites were investigated. At each site, we quantified 6 habitat variables (species richness, abundance, and percentage of grasses and shrubs coverage respectively at the bottom layer of forests) within randomly determined 5 m × 5 m areas. One hundred cages were set in five lines at each site to trap small mammals, whose species and numbers were recorded. Dominance of Dremomys pernyi and Callosciurus erythraeus in small mammal communities, time niche breadth, and time niche overlap between the two small mammals were calculated, respectively. Step-wise regression was used to analyze the relationship between small mammals and habitat factors. Our results indicated that D. pernyi occurred earlier than C. erythraeus in protective pine forests. D. pernyi was captured in 6–10 year-old forest initially, and C. erythraeus was captured in 16–20 year-old forest initially. D. pernyi and C. erythraeus were captured in the 31–40 and 21–30 year-old forests initially in the non-protective area, respectively. Populations of D. pernyi and C. erythraeus in the 31–40 year-old protective forests were 3 and 3.75 times of those in the same-aged non-protective forests, respectively. Shrubs significantly influenced the populations of the two small mammals. The population of D. pernyi was positively correlated with the density of shrubs; the population of C. allosciurus erythraeus was positively correlated with the coverage of shrubs, and negatively correlated with the coverage of grasses. D. remomys pernyi and C. allosciurus erythraeus were important for pine forests to scatter pine seeds. Seasonal activities of the digestive enzyme trypsin were measured between August 1998 and May 1999 to study different nutritional strategies of the two copepods Pseudocalanus minutus and Oithona similis in the Arctic Kongsfjorden (Svalbard) using a highly sensitive fluorescence technique. Stage-, depth- and season-specific characteristics of digestive activity were reflected in the trypsin activity. P. minutus females and stage V copepodids (C) had highest trypsin activities in spring during reproduction (197.5 and 145.7 nmol min−1 ng C−1, respectively). In summer stages CIII–V and in autumn stages CIV and V had high activities (80–116 nmol min−1 ng C−1) in the shallow layer (< 100 m) presumably as a consequence of prolonged feeding before descending to overwintering depth. Trypsin activities at depth (> 100 m) in summer and autumn were low in stages CIII and CIV (29–60 nmol min−1 ng C−1) and in winter in all stages in both layers (20–43 nmol min−1 ng C−1). Based on low trypsin activity, males most likely did not feed. In O. similis, the spring phytoplankton bloom did not significantly affect trypsin activity as compared to the other seasons. O. similis CV and females had high trypsin activities in summer in the deep stratum (304.5 nmol min−1 ng C−1), which was concomitant with reproductive processes and energy storage for overwintering. In autumn, stage CV and female O. similis had significantly higher activities than stage CIV (130–152 versus 78 nmol min−1 ng C−1), which is in accordance with still ongoing developmental and reproductive processes in CVs and females. Comparisons of both species revealed different depth-related responses emphasizing different nutritional preferences: the mainly herbivorous P. minutus is more actively feeding in the shallow layer, where primary production occurs, whereas the omnivorous O. similis is not as much restricted to a certain depth layer, when searching for food. P. minutus had lower levels of trypsin activity during all seasons. In contrast to P. minutus, higher enzyme activities in males of O. similis suggest that they continue to feed and survive after fertilization of females.  相似文献

Using hydrophilicity and recognition values of amino acids, the antigenic sites of theΒ-subunits of human choriogonadotropin and luteinizing hormone were computed from their amino acid sequences. Six antigenic sites were calculated for human choriogonadotropinΒ-subunits: residues 3–8, 17–22, 59–65,100–106,110–116 and 134–139. For luteinizing hormoneΒ-chain three antigenic sites were calculated: residues 17–22,59–65, and 100–106; all these three sites of luteinizing hormoneΒ being identical to the corresponding sites in human choriogonadotropinΒ. There was no antigenic site in luteinizing hormone that was also not found in human choriogonadotropin. Gap characteristics and gap regeneration were studied in three mature stands belonging to different community types in a subalpine coniferous forest on Mt Ontake, central Honshu, Japan. Gap disturbance regimes were remarkably similar among stands studied; percentage gap area to surveyed area, gap density and mean gap size were 7.3–8.5%, 17.8–20.0 ha−1 and 40.8–42.5 m2, respectively. The gap size class distributions were also similar and showed a strong positive skewness with a few large and many small gaps; gaps <40m2 were most frequent and gaps >200m2 were rare. Forty-five to 66% of gaps were due to the death of single canopy trees. Canopy trees more often died leaving standing dead wood (40–5.7%) or broken trunks (43–49%). Shade tolerantAbies mariesii andAbies veitchii, frequently, andTsuga diversifolia, less frequently, regenerated in gaps, from advance regenerations recruited before gap formation.Picea jezoensis var.hondoensis may regenerate in gaps, from new individuals recruited after gap formation. The breakage of denseSasa coverage and the mineral soils exposed by the uprooted plants that form gaps might provide regeneration opportunities for shade intolerantBetula. Of the important species limited to the ridge site,Chamaecyparis obtusa, frequently, andThuja standishii, infrequently, regenerated from plants alreadyin situ. Regeneration ofPinus parviflora was not seen. Based on the gap characteristics and gap regeneration behaviour of each species described, stand dynamics in each stand are discussed.  相似文献

The biosorption equilibrium isotherms of Ni(II) onto marine brown algae Lobophora variegata, which was chemically-modified by CaCl2 were studied and modeled. To predict the biosorption isotherms and to determine the characteristic parameters for process design, twenty-three one-, two-, three-, four- and five-parameter isotherm models were applied to experimental data. The interaction among biosorbed molecules is attractive and biosorption is carried out on energetically different sites and is an endothermic process. The five-parameter Fritz–Schluender model gives the most accurate fit with high regression coefficient, R 2 (0.9911–0.9975) and F-ratio (118.03–179.96), and low standard error, SE (0.0902–0.0.1556) and the residual or sum of square error, SSE (0.0012–0.1789) values to all experimental data in comparison to other models. The biosorption isotherm models fitted the experimental data in the order: Fritz–Schluender (five-parameter) > Freundlich (two-parameter) > Langmuir (two-parameter) > Khan (three-parameter) > Fritz–Schluender (four-parameter). The thermodynamic parameters such as ΔG 0, ΔH 0 and ΔS 0 have been determined, which indicates the sorption of Ni(II) onto L. variegata was spontaneous and endothermic in nature.  相似文献

 The species richness of putative ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi fruiting in blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus Labill.) plantations in Western Australia was investigated in relation to plantation age. Eleven plantations, 1–8 years old, were selected for study and two native Eucalyptus forest sites in the same region were chosen for comparison. Sporocarps of 44 species of putative EM fungi were collected from the 13 sites. Of these, 30 species were found in blue gum plantations. The number of fungal species was highly positively correlated with plantation age and inversely correlated with soil pH. Young plantations (1–5 years) had 2–9 fungal species and were overwhelmingly dominated by species of Laccaria and Scleroderma. In older plantations (6–8 years), the relative abundance of sporocarps of each species within the fungal community decreased, accompanied by an increase in the number of fungal species (12–17 per site). A brief survey of the two native eucalypt forests in this region revealed a much higher number of fungal species than that observed in plantations. In plantations, species of Descolea, Laccaria, Pisolithus and Scleroderma typically fruited in young plantations. Species of epigeous fungi of the genera Boletus, Cortinarius, Hydnum, Inocybe, Lactarius, Paxillus, Russula and hypogeous fungi, including species of Descomyces, Hysterangium and Mesophellia, were found only in older plantations, or in native forests. Some of the fungi that fruit in young plantations are now being evaluated for use in commercial spore inoculation programs to increase the species diversity of EM fungi in exotic eucalypt plantations. We investigated the influence of position on a slope (plot relative elevation) and vegetation disturbance (the tallest tree height per plot) on community composition and diversity in a SE Brazilian Seasonal Semideciduous Forest (46°55′ W, 22°50′ S). Trees with dbh ≥5 cm were sampled in one hundred 10 × 10 m plots randomly placed in a 6.5-ha stand. Through partial Mantel test, floristic dissimilarities among plots (Jaccard index computed with species abundance in each plot) were correlated with environmental distances among plots (Euclidian distance index computed with relative elevation and the tallest tree height values in each plot). Relative elevation and the tallest tree per plot height were individually correlated with floristic gradients expressed by PCA axes scores using Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Through resampling, we compared diversity (richness, Berger-Parker D and Shannon H′) among plots in the drier (up) and moister (low) ends of the slope. Floristic dissimilarities were significantly correlated with environmental distances even after geographic distances among plots have been partialled out (r m = 0.1274, p < 0.001). The first two PCA axes accounted for 22% of the total variance. After Bonferroni and Dutilleul’s corrections, axis 1 showed a marginally significant correlation with plot relative elevation (r = − 0.4097, p = 0.0309), and axis 2 was significantly correlated with the tallest tree height per plot (r = 0.2953, p = 0.0106). Position on the slope and vegetation disturbance were reliable predictors of community composition, thus suggesting the operation of niche assembly organizing processes. Richness and diversity (H′) decreased and dominance (D) increased with elevation on the slope. Dominance increase from D (300) = 0.11 (confidence interval = 0.091–0.131) to D (300) = 0.19 (CI = 0.165–0.210) surpassed the expected dominance increase based on the reduction of richness alone: D (300) = 0.13 (CI = 0.110–0.140), thus highlighting the niche partitioning assembly of the community, especially among abundant species. Given the great amount of floristic variability remaining unexplained, stochastic processes, such as those related to dispersal limitation, may also have influence on the community composition. In 1998–2001, I studied disturbance effects on the population structure and dynamics of a grassland strict biennial Pedicularis sylvatica, and on the species demography (monthly dynamics of seedling recruitment in 1998 and within- and between-year survival in 1998–2000). In two Czech populations, I established three experimental disturbance regimes: (1) a gap treatment, that simulated grazing by clipping vegetation and creating small gaps, (2) a mowing treatment, where I clipped the vegetation, and (3) a no management treatment, where I left the vegetation untreated. The number of recruiting seedlings varied greatly by year, and demographic structure of populations showed significant year-to-year oscillations in mean seedling numbers, from low (3 ± 0.7 s.e. per 0.25 m2 plot) to high (103 ± 20). Inversely in the same years and plots, mean adult numbers in populations oscillated from high (12 ± 2) to low (0.7 ± 0.3). Disturbance effects were only important for seedling recruitment in early census dates in all years. In 1998, most seedlings recruited in April–May in gaps in both sites, but most died before winter. Within- and between-year survival was not affected by disturbance regimes but fluctuated significantly among years. Between-year survival increased with increasing size of the overwintering bud and was higher in disturbance treatments. Since the oscillations in population structure did not significantly vary in response to experimental disturbances, population dynamics may be driven endogenously rather than by disturbance events. The weak disturbance effects on species demography may also indicate population resilience to changes in habitat quality. However, since disturbances promoted seedling recruitment, grazing or mowing regimes are strongly recommended, as they create regeneration opportunities and maintain habitat quality, meeting the species long-term conservation goals.  相似文献

研究了北京市区沿城乡梯度带河流底栖硅藻的空间分布及其季节变化特征。通过在2014年的春季、夏季和秋季在山区对照溪流、城市上游河道和城市下游河道3个样区,共23个样点进行了底栖硅藻样品采集。分析表明,主要优势种的空间差异明显。在对照溪流,主要优势种为极小曲丝藻(Achnanthidium minutissimum);在城市上游河道,主要优势种分别为短文假十字脆杆藻(Pseudostaurosira brevistriata)和连结十字脆杆藻腹面变种(Staurosira construens var.venter);在城市下游河道,主要优势种为谷皮菱形藻(Nitzschia palea)。然而,3个样区内的主要优势种相对丰度季节变化较小(P0.05)。其中,A.minutissimum及P.brevistriata的季节变化特征均为春季秋季夏季,而S.construens var.venter及N.palea的季节变化特征均为春季夏季秋季。结果发现,北京市城乡梯度带的河流硅藻种类组成差异较大,但主要优势属种季节变化相对较小,表明硅藻种类能较好地反映城乡梯度带的河流环境变化状况,可用于北京市河流水质生物监测。  相似文献
