Supplementary UV-B (12.2 kJ m−2 d−1 UV-BBE) provided to Vigna radiata for 2 h d−1 suppressed the length of root, shoot and whole plants, number of leaves, total leaf area, leaf area index, specific leaf mass, fresh and dry mass of leaves and shoot, relative growth rate and net productivity. In unstressed green gram plants (10 kJ m−2 d−1 UV-BBE), triadimefon (TRIAD) (20 mg dm−3) enhanced growth in all parameters over control. The growth promoting effect of TRIAD enabled the UV-B impacted plants to overcome the growth inhibitions to varying degrees indicating its protective potential against UV-B stress. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Pea (Pisum sativum L., cv. Scinado) seedlings were exposed to low doses of ultraviolet-B (UV-B; 4.4 and 13.3 kJ m−2 d−1) or UV-C (0.1 and 0.3 kJ m−2 d−1) radiation for 14 d. Aminocyclopropane carboxylic acid (ACC), indoleacetic acid (IAA) and abscisic acid (ABA) contents were quantified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The accumulation of ACC upon irradiation was dose-dependent. ABA content was reduced and IAA content increased upon UV-C treatment whereas the UV-B doses used did not cause significant changes in ABA and IAA contents.  相似文献

Near-isogenic lines of maize varying in their genes for flavonoid biosynthesis were utilized to examine the effects of foliar flavonoids and nutrient deficiency on maximum net photosynthetic rate (P N) and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence (Fv/Fm) in response to ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation. Plants with deficient (30 to 70 % lower N, K, Mn, Fe, and Zn) and sufficient nutrients were exposed to four irradiation regimes: (1) no UV-B with solar photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), (2) two day shift to ambient artificial UV-B, 8.2–9.5 kJ m−2 d−1 (21–25 mmol m−2 d−1); (3) continuous ambient artificial UV-B; (4) continuous solar UV-B in Hawaii 12–18 kJ m−2 d−1 (32–47 mmol m−2 d−1). The natural ratio of UVB: PAR (0.25–0.40) was maintained in the UV-B treatments. In the adequately fertilized plants, lines b and lc had higher contents of flavonoids and anthocyanins than did lines hi27 and dta. UV-B induced the accumulation of foliar flavonoids in lines hi27 and b, but not in the low flavonoid line dta or in the high flavonoid line lc. In plants grown on deficient relative to adequate nutrients, flavonoid and anthocyanin contents decreased by 30–40 and 40–50 %, respectively, and Chl a and Chl b contents decreased by 30 and 70 %, respectively. The UV-B treatments did not significantly affect P N and Fv/Fm in plants grown on sufficient nutrients, except in the low flavonoid lines dta and hi27 in which P N and Fv/Fm decreased by ∼15 %. P N, Fv/Fm, and stomatal conductance decreased markedly (20–30 %) in all lines exposed to UV-B when grown on low nutrients. The decrease in Fv/Fm was 10 % less in higher flavonoid lines b and lc. The photosynthetic apparatus of maize readily tolerated ambient UV-B in the tropics when plants were adequately fertilized. In contrast, ambient UV-B combined with nutrient deficiency significantly reduced photosynthesis in this C4 plant. Nutrient deficiency increased the susceptibility of maize to UV-B-induced photoinhibition in part by decreasing the contents of photoprotective compounds.  相似文献

Ultraviolet-B radiation (biologically effective dose 2.6 kJ m−2 d−1) had negative influence on morphology and physiology of the young triticale plants. Plants exposed to UV-B were of lower height than control plants, their leaves were narrow, and the rate of net photosynthesis was decreased. The line RAH 336, which wax cover is lesser than that of traditional cultivar Magnat, was more susceptible to UV-B radiation, considering primary photosynthesis reactions, recorded by chlorophyll a fluorescence. An activation of protective mechanisms was observed: plants responded to UV-B by an increase of the content of UV-B absorbing compounds, and changes of antioxidant enzyme activities.  相似文献

Due to anthropogenic influences, solar UV-B irradiance at the earth’s surface is increasing. To determine the effects of enhanced UV-B radiation on photosynthetic characteristics of Prunus dulcis, two-year-old seedlings of the species were submitted to four levels of UV-B stress, namely 0 (UV-Bc), 4.42 (UV-B1), 7.32 (UV-B2) and 9.36 (UV-B3) kJ m−2 d−1. Effects of UV-B stress on a range of chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters (FPs), Chl contents and photosynthetic gas-exchange parameters were investigated. UV-B stress promoted an increase in minimal fluorescence of dark-adapted state (F0) and F0/Fm, and a decrease in variable fluorescence (Fv, Fv/Fm, Fv/F0 and F0/Fm) due to its adverse effects on photosystem II (PSII) activity. No significant change was observed for maximal fluorescence of dark-adapted state (Fm). Enhanced UV-B radiation caused a significant inhibition of net photosynthetic rate (P N) at UV-B2 and UV-B3 levels and this was accompanied by a reduction in stomatal conductance (g s) and transpiration rate (E). The contents of Chl a, b, and total Chl content (a+b) were also significantly reduced at increased UV-B stress. In general, adverse UV-B effects became significant at the highest tested radiation dose 9.36 kJ m−2 d−1. The most sensitive indicators for UV-B stress were Fv/F0, Chl a content and P N. Significant P<0.05 alteration in these parameters was found indicating the drastic effect of UV-B radiation on P. dulcis.  相似文献

Elevated UV-B radiation (12.2 kJ m–2 d–1) as against the ambient level of 10 kJ m–2 d–1 affected flowering, productivity and biomass partitioning of green gram [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek cv. KM-2]. UV-B stress delayed flowering initiation and achievement of 50 % flowering, reduced flower retention by 25 %, potential yield by 18 % and all yield attributes such as pod number (25 %), pod mass (41 %), seed number (32 %) and seed mass (45 %). Harvest index and shelling percentage were also reduced by 31 and 7 %, respectively. Application of triadimefon (20 mg dm–3) to unstressed plants accelerated flowering and enhanced flower retention (21 %), potential yield (15 %) and yield attributes (7 to 44 %). The partitioning of biomass between plant parts also showed improvement over the control plants. In UV-B-stressed plants, triadimefon treatment compensated the inhibitions to varying extents.  相似文献

Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.)Karst.) from seven seed sources was grown in a greenhouse with 8.3 and 14.7 kJ·m−2·d−1 m UV-BBE (biologically effective UV-B: 280–320 nm) irradiation, and with no supplemental irradiation as control. The seedlings total biomass (dry weight) and shoot growth decreased with high UV-B treatment but spruce from low elevation seed sources were more affected. The seedlings grown at the highest UV-B irradiance (14.7 kJ·m−2·d−1) showed from 5 to 38% inhibition of total biomass and 15 to 70 % shoot growth inhibition. Norway spruce populations from higher altitude seed sources manifested greater tolerance to UV-B radiation compared to plants from low altitudes. Changes in phospholipids and protective pigments were also determined. The plants grown at the lower UV-B irradiance (8.3 kJ·m−2·d−1) showed greater ability to concentrations UV-B-absorbing pigments then control plants. Chlorophyll a fluorescence parameter Rfd, (Rfd=(Fm-Fs)/Fs) showed a significant decrease in needles of UV-B treated plants and this correlated with the altitude of seed source. Exposure to UV-B affect levels of the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm). Results from this study suggest that the response to increased levels of UV-B radiation is depended upon the ecotypic differentiation of Norway spruce and involved changes in metabolites in plant tissues.  相似文献

The present study was aimed at understanding the effects of long term supplemental UV-B (3.6 kJ m?2 d?1) on biomass production, accumulation of reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation, and enzymatic antioxidants in leaves and roots of Withania somnifera (an indigenous medicinal plant). Under the UV-B treatment, a reduction in biomass and an increased malondialdehyde content (a characteristic of lipid peroxidation) were observed in both the shoots and roots. Amongst ROS, H2O2 content increased under UV-B in the leaves, whereas it decreased in the roots, and superoxide radical production rate decreased in both the plant parts. The activities of all enzymatic antioxidants tested (ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, glutathione reductase, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and superoxide dismutase) increased under the UV-B treatment, the increase being greater in the roots.  相似文献

Arabidopsis thaliana grown in a light regime that included ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation (6 kJ m−2 d−1) had similar light-saturated photosynthetic rates but up to 50% lower stomatal conductance rates, as compared to plants grown without UV-B radiation. Growth responses of Arabidopsis to UV-B radiation included lower leaf area (25%) and biomass (10%) and higher UV-B absorbing compounds (30%) and chlorophyll content (52%). Lower stomatal conductance rates for plants grown with UV-B radiation were, in part, due to lower stomatal density on the adaxial surface. Plants grown with UV-B radiation had more capacity to down regulate photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) as shown by up to 25% lower φPSII and 30% higher non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence under saturating light. These contributed to a smaller reduction in the maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (F v/F m), greater dark-recovery of F v/F m, and higher light-saturated carbon assimilation and stomatal conductance and transpiration rates after a four-hour high light treatment for plants grown with UV-B radiation. Plants grown with UV-B were more tolerant to a 12 day drought treatment than plants grown without UV-B as indicated by two times higher photosynthetic rates and 12% higher relative water content. UV-B-grown plants also had three times higher proline content. Higher tolerance to drought stress for Arabidopsis plants grown under UV-B radiation may be attributed to both increased proline content and decreased stomatal conductance. Growth of Arabidopsis in a UV-B-enhanced light regime increased tolerance to high light exposure and drought stress.  相似文献

Several studies have found the photosynthetic integration in clonal plants to response to resource heterogeneity, while little is known how it responses to heterogeneity of UV-B radiation. In this study, the effects of heterogeneous UV-B radiation (280–315 nm) on gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence of a clonal plant Trifolium repens were evaluated. Pairs of connected and severed ramets of the stoloniferous herb T. repens were grown under the homogeneity (both of ramets received only natural background radiation, ca. 0.6 kJ m−2 d−1) and heterogeneity of UV-B radiation (one of the ramet received only natural background radiation and the other was exposed to supplemental UV-B radiation, 2.54 kJ m−2 d−1) for seven days. Stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) and transpiration rate (E) showed no significant differences in connected and severed ramets under homogenous and heterogeneous UV-B radiation, however, net photosynthetic rate (P N) and maximum photosynthetic rate (P max) of ramets suffered from supplemental increased UV-B radiation and that of its connected sister ramet decreased significantly. Moreover, additive UV-B radiation resulted in a notable decrease of the minimal fluorescence of dark-adapted state (Fo), the electron transport rate (ETR) and photochemical quenching coefficient (qP) and an increase of nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) under supplemental UV-B radiation, while physiological connection reverse the results. In all, UV-B stressed ramets could benefit from unstressed ramets by physiological integration in photosynthetic efficiency, and clonal plants are able to optimize the efficiency to maintain their presence in less favourable sites.  相似文献

The possible ameliorative effects of quercetin on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] leaves exposed to UV-B radiation were conducted in greenhouse. The symmetrical leaves supplied with quercetin solution (0.2%, 1%) were exposed to UV-B radiation (0, 3.5, 6.5 kJ m−2 d−1). 0.2% quercetin ameliorated leaf photosynthesis, improved leaf water content (LWC), and decreased lipid oxidation. The unfavorable effect on photosynthetic parameter was displayed in 1% quercetin treatment. The effect of quercetin on phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) activity varied with the quercetin concentration, UV-B radiation intensity and leaf development. In the later development polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity was increased significantly by quercetin treatments. We suggested that quercetin with suitable concentration could serve as UV-B protective agent partly due to its antioxidant capacity.  相似文献

Hybridisation between certain willow species is a common feature leading to novel genotypes varying in growth rate and stress tolerance. The objective of this 4-week study was to investigate the effects of decreased watering, enhanced ultraviolet-B irradiation (UV-BBE, 280–315 nm, 7.2 kJ m−2 day−1) and combined decreased watering and enhanced UV-B irradiation on di- and polyamines in the leaves of Salix myrsinifolia and its hybrid with S. myrsinites. Control plantlets were well-watered and exposed to ambient UV-B irradiation (UV-BBE, 3.6 kJ m−2 day−1). HPLC analyses showed that the constitutive concentrations of soluble di- and polyamines varied markedly between S. myrsinifolia and its hybrids. The degree of responses to treatments also varied: in S. myrsinifolia, concentrations of free putrescine were clearly increased by reduced watering, while in the hybrid willow, change in putrescine was less pronounced and not significant. Results also showed that the increase in putrescine in S. myrsinifolia by reduced watering was mitigated by concurrent enhancement of UV-B irradiation. There were no direct UV-B effects on the soluble polyamines.  相似文献

The responses of the early development of Laminaria japonica collected from Kiaochow Bay in China to enhanced ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280–320 nm) were studied in the laboratory. The low UV-B radiations (11.7–23.4 J·m−2·d−1) had no significant effects on zoospores attachment, but when the UV-B dose > 35.1 J·m−2·d−1 the attachment decreased significantly compared with the control. Germination of embryospores was >93% under the low (11.7–35.1 J·m−2·d−1) doses, and in the range of 78.5%–88.5% under the high (46.8–70.2 J·m−2·d−1) UV-B doses, indicating a significant radiation effect. Under the higher UV-B exposure (35.1–70.2 J·m−2·d−1), all of the few gametophytes formed from embryospores died 120 h post-release. After exposure to the low UV-B radiation (11.7–23.4 J·m−2·d−1), the formation of sporophytes decreased and the female gametophyte clones increased compared with the control. However, the sex ratio and the relative growth of female gametophytes/sporophytes had not significantly changed. According to the results, enhanced UV-B radiation has a significant effect on the early development of L. japonica under laboratory conditions, suggesting that the UV-B radiation could not be overlooked as one of the important environmental factors influencing the ontogeny of macroalgae living in marine ecosystems. The author studied the effect of different nickel concentrations (0, 0.4, 40 and 80 μM Ni) on the nitrate reductase (NR) activity of New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia expansa Murr.) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Justyna) plants supplied with different nitrogen forms (NO3 –N, NH4 +–N, NH4NO3). A low concentration of Ni (0.4 μM) did not cause statistically significant changes of the nitrate reductase activity in lettuce plants supplied with nitrate nitrogen (NO3 –N) or mixed (NH4NO3) nitrogen form, but in New Zealand spinach leaves the enzyme activity decreased and increased, respectively. The introduction of 0.4 μM Ni in the medium containing ammonium ions as a sole source of nitrogen resulted in significantly increased NR activity in lettuce roots, and did not cause statistically significant changes of the enzyme activity in New Zealand spinach plants. At a high nickel level (Ni 40 or 80 μM), a significant decrease in the NR activity was observed in New Zealand spinach plants treated with nitrate or mixed nitrogen form, but it was much more marked in leaves than in roots. An exception was lack of significant changes of the enzyme activity in spinach leaves when plants were treated with 40 μM Ni and supplied with mixed nitrogen form, which resulted in the stronger reduction of the enzyme activity in roots than in leaves. The statistically significant drop in the NR activity was recorded in the aboveground parts of nickel-stressed lettuce plants supplied with NO3 –N or NH4NO3. At the same time, there were no statistically significant changes recorded in lettuce roots, except for the drop of the enzyme activity in the roots of NO3 -fed plants grown in the nutrient solution containing 80 μM Ni. An addition of high nickel doses to the nutrient solution contained ammonium nitrogen (NH4 +–N) did not affect the NR activity in New Zealand spinach plants and caused a high increase of this enzyme in lettuce organs, especially in roots. It should be stressed that, independently of nickel dose in New Zealand spinach plants supplied with ammonium form, NR activity in roots was dramatically higher than that in leaves. Moreover, in New Zealand spinach plants treated with NH4 +–N the enzyme activity in roots was even higher than in those supplied with NO3 –N.  相似文献

Increased antioxidant activity in Cassia seedlings under UV-B radiation   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Cassia auriculata L. seedlings were irradiated with ultraviolet B (UV-B) in an environment-control chamber. The two doses assayed (7.5 and 15.0 kJ m−2) induced oxidative damage with an increase in lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide and a decrease in chlorophyll and total phenol contents. The ascorbate and dehydroascorbate content as well as the reduced glutathione/oxidized glutathione content and ratio were significantly increased. The UV-B stress led to significant increases of the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase. It is suggested that Cassia seedlings try to counteract high concentrations of oxygen species produced under UV-B stress through a co-ordinated increase in the contents and activities of antioxidants involved in their detoxification.  相似文献

Iron nutrition affects cadmium accumulation and toxicity in rice plants   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
The effect of iron (Fe) nutrition on cadmium (Cd) toxicity and accumulation in rice plants was studied using a hydroponic system. The inhibitory effect of Cd on plant growth and chlorophyll content (SPAD value) was dependent on Fe level and the genotype. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content in leaves and roots was not much affected by an increased Cd stress at 0.171 mg l−1 Fe, but it showed a rapid increase when the plants were exposed to moderate (1.89 mg l−1) and high (16.8 mg l−1) Fe levels. High Fe nutrition caused a marked reduction in Cd content in both leaves and roots. Fe content in plants was lower at high Cd (5.0 μM) stress than at low Cd (<1.0 μM) stress. Cd stress increased both superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities at low and moderate Fe levels. However, with high Fe level, it increased the POD activity, but reduced the SOD activity. Our results substantiate the hypothesis that cell membrane-bound iron transporter (carrier) involved in high-affinity iron transport systems can also transport Cd, and both these ions may compete for this common carrier. The study further showed that there were significant correlations between MDA and Fe contents in leaves and roots of rice plants. It is suggested that the occurrence of oxidative stress in plants exposed to Cd stress is mediated by Fe nutrition. The present results also show that Cd stress affects the uptake of Cu and Zn.  相似文献

Alterations in photosynthetic capacity of primary leaves of wheat seedlings in response to ultraviolet-B (UV-B; 280–320 nm; 60 μmol m−2 s−1) exposure alone and in combination with photosynthetically active radiation (PAR; 400–800 nm; 200 μmol m−2 s−1) during different phases of leaf growth and development were assessed. UV-B exposure resulted in a phase-dependent differential loss in photosynthetic pigments, photochemical potential, photosystem 2 (PS2) quantum yield, and in vivo O2 evolution. UV-B exposure induced maximum damage to the photosynthetic apparatus during senescence phase of development. The damages were partially alleviated when UV-B exposure was accompanied by PAR. UV-B induced an enhancement in accumulation of flavonoids during all phases of development while it caused a decline in anthocyanin content during senescence. The differential changes in these parameters demonstrated the adaptation ability of leaves to UV-B stress during all phases of development and the ability was modified in UV-B+ PAR exposed samples.  相似文献

Effect of UV-B radiation on leaves of bean, pea and rape plants was studied. UV-B radiation (11.2 kJ·m−2) induced more distinct reduction of the primary photosynthesis activity when applied in darkness than the same UV-B dose, extended in time, and applied with photosynthetic active radiation (PAR). The pea plants were more susceptible to UV-B in darkness, but in the presence of PAR their tolerance was higher. The CO2 fixation in the bean and rape plants, exposed to UV-B was decreased, but for the pea plants it remained unchanged. The UV-B irradiation caused an increase in the content of ultraviolet-absorbing pigments. Additionally, the bean plants grown at UV-B increased the thickness of leaves, described as SLW.  相似文献

A crop legume Vigna unguiculata L. (Walp.) and a wild legume Crotalaria juncea L. were evaluated for their relative responses to the oxidative stress injury induced by various doses of UV-B radiation (UV-B, 280–315 nm; 0, 1.0, 1.4, 4.7, and 6.0 kJ m−2 d−1). A dose-dependent damage in lipid peroxidation was determined as an index of membrane injury caused by UV-B. The impact was significantly higher in V. unguiculata than in C. juncea. The specific activities of superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, and dehydroascorbate reductase increased directly proportional to UV-B doses. However, the activities of these enzymes were significantly higher in V. unguiculata than in C. juncea indicating that V. unguiculata was inflicted with more severe oxidative stress injury under UV-B. In C. juncea the glutathione reductase and ascorbate oxidase activities were 35 and 40 % greater than in V. unguiculata, respectively. Further, the non-enzymatic antioxidants ascorbate and glutathione, and their reduced/oxidizes ratios in C. juncea were much greater than V. unguiculata indicating C. juncea has an inherently greater antioxidative potential than V. unguiculata. Thus C. juncea is better adapted to oxidative stress than V. unguiculata by means of efficient cellular antioxidant mechanisms helping to combat the photooxidative stress injury elicited by UV-B.  相似文献

In the southeast of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau of China, Mono Maple is a common species in reforestation processes. The paper mainly investigated the changes in morphological, photosynthetic and physiological responses of Mono Maple seedlings to UV-B radiation, nitrogen supply and their combination. The experimental design included two levels of UV-B treatments (ambient UV-B, 11.02 KJ m−2 day−1; enhanced UV-B, 14.33 KJ m−2 day−1) and two nitrogen levels (0; 20 g N m−2 a−1)—to determine whether the adverse effects of UV-B on plants are eased by nitrogen supply. Enhanced UV-B caused a marked decline in growth parameters, net photosynthetic rate, and photosynthetic pigments, whereas it induced an increase in reaction oxygen species (hydrogen peroxide accumulation and the rate of superoxide radical production) and malondialdehyde content. Enhance UV-B also induced an increase in antioxidant compounds of Mono Maple, such as UV-B absorbing compounds, proline content, and activities of antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase, superoxide dimutase and catalase). On the other hand, nitrogen supply caused an increase in some growth parameters, net photosynthetic rate, photosynthetic pigments and antioxidant compounds (peroxidase, proline content and UV-B absorbing compounds), and reduced the content of reaction oxygen species (H2O2 accumulation, the rate of O2production) and malondialdehyde content under ambient UV-B. However, under enhanced UV-B, nitrogen supply inhibited some growth parameters, and increased H2O2 accumulation, the rate of O2production and MDA content, though proline content, UV-B absorbing compounds and activities of POD and SOD increased. These results implied that enhanced UV-B brought harmful effects on Mono Maple seedlings and nitrogen supply made plants more sensitive to enhanced UV-B, though increased some antioxidant activity.  相似文献
