Comprises species occurring mostly in subtidal habitats in tropical, subtropical and warm-temperate areas of the world. An analysis of the type species, V. spiralis (Sonder) Lamouroux ex J. Agardh, a species from Australia, establishes basic characters for distinguishing species in the genus. These characters are (1) branching patterns of thalli, (2) flat blades that may be spiralled on their axis, (3) width of the blade, (4) primary or secondary derivation of sterile and fertile branchlets and (5) position of sterile and fertile branchlets on the thalli. Application of the latter two characters provides an important basic method for separation of species into three major groups. Osmundaria , a genus known only in southern Australia, was studied in relation to Vidalia , and its separation from the Vidalia assemblage is not accepted. Species of Vidalia therefore are transferred to the older genus name, Osmundaria. Two new species, Osmundaria papenfussii and Osmundaria oliveae are described from Natal. Confusion in the usage of the epithet, Vidalia fimbriala Brown ex Turner has been clarified, and Vidalia gregaria Falkenberg, described as an epiphyte on Osmundaria pro/ifera Lamouroux, is revealed to be young branches of the host, Osmundaria prolifera.  相似文献

Chromosomal races of the house mouse (Mus musculus domesticus) in Valtellina and Orobian Alps (Northern Italy) are known for their very fast raciation. Here we present a study using geometric morphometries on size and shape changes in the skull and the mandible of three races (Orobian, Upper Valtellina, Poschiavo) occurring in this area and forming a presumably monophyletic group. One of the races (Upper Valtellina) went extinct recently in an area of sympatry with the Poschiavo race, so that data on genetics (chromosomes and allozymes), behaviour and morphology were available to investigate causes of phenotypic divergence during speciation with a recent extinction event. The evaluation of partial warp scores and the uniform component shows that morphological changes have been fast and that these races can be recognized on the basis of skull shape. Patterns of evolution in shape changes were visualized by combining the chromosomal phylogeny and shape space, summarizing therefore both the phenetic and cladistic relationships. Shape changes follow the cladogenetic sequence depicted by chromosomal fusions. The examination of Procrustes distances shows that the different parts of the skull evolved at different rates after speciation, with shifts in the integration of the various structures (olfactory, auditory, feeding, visualization, etc.). Among the possible causes, aggressive behaviour was advocated for sudden changes in the shape of the skull.  相似文献

The filament curtain is a complex structure found in Acanthaceae inside the corolla. It usually divides the corolla into two compartments, enclosing the main nectar bulk behind two adjacent filament bands. Four independent floral characters are involved in the structure of the filament curtain: a fusion of the filaments, decurrent filaments along the corolla wall, a slanting border between the synstapetal and apostapetal corolla regions (i.e. stamen corolla tube and corolla tube s.s .), and geniculate lower, lateral corolla lobe traces at this border. The distribution of a filament curtain within Acanthaceae suggests an enlarged tribe Ruellieae s.l ., including Louteridieae and Trichanthereae, excluding subtribe Barleriinae, and raises a question mark as to the systematic position of the genera Calacanthus, Glossochilus, Lankesteria and Mhitfieldia . The evolutionary origin of the filament curtain is probably connected with its functions in pollination biology, which are proposed to be those of restricted nectar access, prevention of nectar evaporation, lever arm function facilitating dorsal pollen deposition, and stabilizing of posticous position of anthers and style. Four types of filament curtains are distinguished: phaulopsoid, corolla fold, reduced and strobilanthoid. Variation in the filament curtain structure appears to be related to different pollination syndromes of the flowers. Mapping of this variation on to an existing phylogeny shows an evolution from a phaulopsoid type diverging into the other three types, possibly a development responding to shifts of pollinators.  相似文献

Misopates pontiense sp. nov. is described from one population located in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula. It is an annual, living on charred soils. Its distinguishing characteristics include its seeds, which have a carinate dorsal face and an encircling rounded ridge with cylindrical papillae, but lack a median ridge on the ventral face. Morphological characters and taxonomic affinities are discussed.  相似文献

Skull length is the measurement most commonly used as a standard against which other aspects of cranial morphology are compared to derive an index of relative size or proportions. However, skull length is composed of two different functional components, facial skull and cerebral skull, which vary independently and have different scaling relationships with body size. An analysis of carnivore skull shape with measurements standardized against basicranium length produced very different results than an analysis using skull length as the standard. For example, expressions of relative size of cranial measurements were reduced by 13% in mustelids and increased by 20% in canids, reflecting removal of jaw length (short in mustelids and long in canids) from the comparative standard (basicranial axis length). Cranial measurements scale with higher allometric exponents against basicranial axis length than against skull length.  相似文献

Tasmanian devils face extinction owing to the emergence of a contagious cancer. Devil facial tumour disease (DFTD) is a clonal cancer spread owing to a lack of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) barriers in Tasmanian devil populations. We present a comprehensive screen of MHC diversity in devils and identify 25 MHC types and 53 novel sequences, but conclude that overall levels of MHC diversity at the sequence level are low. The majority of MHC Class I variation can be explained by allelic copy number variation with two to seven sequence variants identified per individual. MHC sequences are divided into two distinct groups based on sequence similarity. DFTD cells and most devils have sequences from both groups. Twenty per cent of individuals have a restricted MHC repertoire and contain only group I or only group II sequences. Counterintuitively, we postulate that the immune system of individuals with a restricted MHC repertoire may recognize foreign MHC antigens on the surface of the DFTD cell. The implication of these results for management of DFTD and this endangered species are discussed.  相似文献

The contribution of metrical, karyological and biochemical techniques towards taxonomic understanding is considered with respect to (1) the delimitation of species; (2) the classification of species at generic level; and (3) subspecific variation. All these techniques are useful for the discrimination of sibling species, with metrical discriminants especially important in helping to establish the geographical limits of species, being applicable to museum collections and to fossil material. In classification at the generic level multivariate morphometric analysis is of very limited value, but karyology and allozyme studies can make important contributions provided the majority of relevant species are examined. All techniques are relevant to establishing the major aspects of subspecific variation, for which formal subspecific nomenclature is rarely appropriate. Problems of extrapolation from inadequate samples are just as acute when using these techniques as with more traditional taxonomy based on morphology. Clear presentation of results in the form of data matrices and dendrograms is important in facilitating the integration of data into a useful taxonomic system.  相似文献

A principal components analysis was performed on 20 measurements of the ectopterygoids of 85 colubroid snakes. This sample encompassed all the shape variation previously recognized in the ectopterygoid of colubroids. Simple proportions which correlate with the first two principal component axes are: relative ectopterygoid length with the first and five measures of absolute or relative head shape with the second. Using these simple proportions colubroid ectopterygoids can be sorted into four shape classes each concordant with a taxonomic grouping: relatively long with broad notched head—Crotalinac; relatively long with narrow, flat head—Viperinae; relatively short with broad, notched head—Colubridae; and relatively short with narrow, flat head—Elapidae. This concordance has an error of about 1000. We propose that these shape classes reflect phylogenetically old and conservative functional differences in the palatomaxillary complexes of the four taxonomic groupings. Other aspects of ectopterygoid shape are described and provisional character state phylogenies for some aspects of the ectopterygoid are presented. Finally, the bearing of our data on the systematics of aparallactines, micrurines, sea snakes, Azemiops and certain other genera are discussed.  相似文献

Multiple-group principal component analysis was used to investigate morphological differences between skulls of male and female hooded seals. The scores on the first principal axis (PCI), calculated from the variance-covariance matrix of log-transformed data, were highly correlated with age and the component was interpreted as a general growth axis. The other components had correlations between dimensions and component scores of different signs and magnitude and were interpreted as shape axes. The standardized component scores were subjected to analyses of variance and discriminant analyses. Sexual dimorphism was disclosed on eight of the components including PCI, and was functionally related mostly to the hood of the males.  相似文献

Devil facial tumor disease (DFTD) is a transmissible cancer affecting Tasmanian devils Sarcophilus harrisii. The disease has caused severe population declines and is associated with demographic and behavioral changes, including earlier breeding, younger age structures, and reduced dispersal and social interactions. Devils are generally solitary, but social encounters are commonplace when feeding upon large carcasses. DFTD tumors can disfigure the jaw and mouth and so diseased individuals might alter their diets to enable ingestion of alternative foods, to avoid conspecific interactions, or to reduce competition. Using stable isotope analysis (δ13C and δ15N) of whiskers, we tested whether DFTD progression, measured as tumor volume, affected the isotope ratios and isotopic niches of 94 infected Tasmanian devils from six sites in Tasmania, comprising four eucalypt plantations, an area of smallholdings and a national park. Then, using tissue from 10 devils sampled before and after detection of tumors and 8 devils where no tumors were detected, we examined whether mean and standard deviation of δ13C and δ15N of the same individuals changed between healthy and diseased states. δ13C and δ15N values were generally not related to tumor volume in infected devils, though at one site, Freycinet National Park, δ15N values increased significantly as tumor volume increased. Infection with DFTD was not associated with significant changes in the mean or standard deviation of δ13C and δ15N values in individual devils sampled before and after detection of tumors. Our analysis suggests that devils tend to maintain their isotopic niche in the face of DFTD infection and progression, except where ecological conditions facilitate a shift in diets and feeding behaviors, demonstrating that ecological context, alongside disease severity, can modulate the behavioral responses of Tasmanian devils to DFTD.  相似文献

Infectious diseases, including transmissible cancers, can have a broad range of impacts on host behaviour, particularly in the latter stages of disease progression. However, the difficulty of early diagnoses makes the study of behavioural influences of disease in wild animals a challenging task. Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii) are affected by a transmissible cancer, devil facial tumour disease (DFTD), in which tumours are externally visible as they progress. Using telemetry and mark–recapture datasets, we quantify the impacts of cancer progression on the behaviour of wild devils by assessing how interaction patterns within the social network of a population change with increasing tumour load. The progression of DFTD negatively influences devils'' likelihood of interaction within their network. Infected devils were more active within their network late in the mating season, a pattern with repercussions for DFTD transmission. Our study provides a rare opportunity to quantify and understand the behavioural feedbacks of disease in wildlife and how they may affect transmission and population dynamics in general.  相似文献

1. We investigated the impact of a recently emerged disease, Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD), on the survival and population growth rate of a population of Tasmanian devils, Sarcophilus harrisii, on the Freycinet Peninsula in eastern Tasmania. 2. Cormack-Jolly-Seber and multistate mark-recapture models were employed to investigate the impact of DFTD on age- and sex-specific apparent survival and transition rates. Disease impact on population growth rate was investigated using reverse-time mark-recapture models. 3. The arrival of DFTD triggered an immediate and steady decline in apparent survival rates of adults and subadults, the rate of which was predicted well by the increase in disease prevalence in the population over time. 4. Transitions from healthy to diseased state increased with disease prevalence suggesting that the force of infection in the population is increasing and that the epidemic is not subsiding. 5. The arrival of DFTD coincided with a marked, ongoing decline in the population growth rate of the previously stable population, which to date has not been offset by population compensatory responses.  相似文献

Flowers of Potamogeton normally have a completely tetramerous plan. Deviations from this norm occur quite commonly in the uppermost flowers of the inflorescence; these variations have been reported before and usually involve a reduction in number of parts. Cases have now been found where the gynoecium of all or many flowers differs from the normal tetracarpellate arrangement; some species regularly have fewer and others more than four carpels. The developmental bases of meristic variation have been explored and quantitative studies of gynoecia and developing gynoecia have been undertaken. The data are used to evaluate the control and correlation of floral development in Potamogeton in general, and in particular the relationship between the gynoecium and the rest of the flower. The developing flower passes through two successive phases of organ initiation: one in which the perianth and stamen primordia arise, and one in which the gynoecial primordia arise. There seems to be little developmental relationship between the two phases except phyllotactic continuity. During the perianth/stamen phase each stamen primordium arises directly above a perianth member, and the presence of a perianth member seems to be a prerequisite for initiation of the stamen. The perianth/stamen phase seems to be rather stable so that normally four perianth/stamen associations are initiated, except in flowers at the tip of the inflorescence. In the gynoecial phase the number of carpel primordia initiated seems to depend on the relative size of carpel primordia and floral apex, and on whether or not the floral apex continues to grow while initiating carpel primordia.  相似文献

The isolated population of grass snakes, Natrix natrix (L.), on the island of Gotland in die Baltic Sea is described and illustrated. Comparisons are made with the surrounding mainland grass snake. On the basis of morphological and ecological divergence, the conclusion is drawn that the Gotland population represents a new subspecies.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Twenty different clonal strains of marine and brackish Euplotes , representing four morphotypes, were tested for hyposalinity tolerance by a method which gradually acclimated the cells to lower salinity medium. The lowest salinities in which the strains could thrive ranged from 60% of normal seawater to complete freshwater. The morphological effects of culture medium salinity were also examined for two strains of a small Euplotes charon morphotype, as well as for two mating compatible Euplotes vannus strains and several of their exconjugates. There were no differences between the euryhaline strains grown in fresh or saltwater, except for a slight increase in overall cell size in one strain when cultured in freshwater medium. E. vannus strains increased in overall cell size with decreased salinity; also, the dorsal surface of the cells can become disorganized when the cells are cultured in 30% normal seawater.  相似文献

Recent ecomorphological studies have shown that the predicted correlations between morphology and ecology on broad taxonomic levels are often obscured when comparing more closely related groups. Among species, comparisons of lizards often indicate very little support for adaptive radiations into novel habitats. As few population level studies have been performed, we compared body, head and limb shape between four populations of Urosaurus ornatus living in structurally distinct habitats (cliffs, rocks, trees and boulders). Surprisingly, clear correlations between habitat use and body shape among populations were found, most of which were in good accordance with a priori biomechanical predictions (e.g. flat body and head for extreme climbers; long distal hindlimb segments for jumpers and runners; narrow body and long tail for tree dwelling lizards). This indicates that populations of Urosaurus ornatus are seemingly 'adapted' to the habitat they live in. However, quantification of performance and behaviour are needed to determine the adaptive nature of these observations.  相似文献

Evolution of skull shape in carnivores 1. Representative modern carnivores   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fifteen variables, selected primarily to reflect functionally significant aspects of cranial morphology, were measured on one skull each of 62 species of modern carnivores, including viverrids, canids, mustelids and felids. To allow comparisons between species of different sizes without the potentially confounding effects of allometric shape changes, the measurements were transformed to dimensionless variables, based on the residuals from allometric equations. Fourteen out of 15 of the transformed variables distinguish one or more of the four family groups and the rotated first two axes of a principal components analysis distinguish all four families from each other. The following functional hypotheses are proposed: mustelids and felids have the most powerful bites and canids the weakest among the four family groups studied; mustelids and, to a lesser degree, felids have more powerful neck musculature than do canids and viverrids; and visual abilities are best developed among felids and least developed among mustelids. The first two functional hypotheses suggest possible differences in killing behaviour, which are supported by a preliminary survey of the literature on such behaviour. Allometric analysis of the 15 cranial measures shows that the neurocranial components scale with negative allometry, while most of the other measures scale approximately isometrically.  相似文献

The taxonomie status of different morphotypes generally ascribed to the species of boring sponge Cliona viridis is examined. Morphometric, ecological and genetic differences between two morphotypes living sympatrically on rocky shores of the Ligurian Sea are considered. Morphotype 1 is characterized by small, well separated papillae (α stage), exclusively boring into the crust of coralline algae on the exposed rocky bottoms of the upper sublittoral zone. Morphotype 2 shows bigger papillae, often connected by portions of encrusting tissue ( β stage), and is predominantly found boring into organogenic concretions in slightly lighted habitats. Measurements of tylostyles indicate that morphotype 1 has spicules significantly smaller than morphotype 2. Electrophoretic analysis shows that the two morphotypes are fixed for different alleles at all four loci scored, indicating absence of gene flow between the two populations, i.e. they appear to be distinct biological species.  相似文献

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against not only human, mouse, and rat but also rabbit, dog, cat, bovine, pig, and horse podoplanins (PDPNs) have been established in our previous studies. PDPN is used as a lymphatic endothelial cell marker in pathological diagnoses. However, mAbs against Tasmanian devil PDPN (tasPDPN), which are useful for immunohistochemical analysis, remain to be developed. Herein, mice were immunized with tasPDPN-overexpressing Chinese hamster ovary (CHO)-K1 (CHO/tasPDPN) cells, and hybridomas producing mAbs against tasPDPN were screened using flow cytometry. One of the mAbs, PMab-233 (IgG1, kappa), specifically detected CHO/tasPDPN cells by flow cytometry and recognized tasPDPN protein by western blotting. Furthermore, PMab-233 strongly detected CHO/tasPDPN cells by immunohistochemistry. These findings suggest that PMab-233 may be useful as a lymphatic endothelial cell marker of the Tasmanian devil.  相似文献
