Drimys winteri and Nothofagus dombeyi, two native Chilean wood species with high potential for pulp production, were biodegraded by Ganoderma australe. This fungus is known to provoke extensive and selective biodelignification of these wood species in the field. Under laboratory conditions, N. dombeyi underwent higher weight and component losses than D. winteri. In neither case was the lignin removal selective, because glucan loss was almost simultaneous with lignin degradation. The decayed wood chips became progressively discoloured throughout the biodegradation time. The brightness increase was only partly reversed in thermal reversion assays. Nothofagus dombey solubility in 1% NaOH increased by 13.7% after 9 weeks of biodegradation, while D. winteri solubility increased by 14.2% in a shorter period (6 weeks). In both cases, the solubility increase was proportional to the liquor absorbance increase at 272 nm, which indicates that the wood solubility in 1% NaOH was dependent of lignin solubilization.  相似文献

Introductions of exotic species pose a significant threat to the persistence of many native populations, including many inland fishes. In 1994, piscivorous lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) were discovered in Yellowstone Lake, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA, one of the last strongholds of the native Yellowstone cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki bouvieri). Predation by lake trout is expected to lead to a substantial decline in the native cutthroat trout population, which may have significant negative consequences for terrestrial predators that depend on cutthroat trout for prey and for the recreational fishery of the Park. We developed a matrix demographic model for the cutthroat trout population in Yellowstone Lake to identify the life stages that are most critical for understanding population dynamics. Parameter estimates (vital rates) were manipulated to explore the possible consequences of lake trout invasion. Comparisons of our results with current estimates of population trend and age structure suggested that our model reflected current conditions of the system. Elasticity analysis of the model revealed that population growth was most sensitive to annual survival of young trout, the group that is expected to be most vulnerable to lake trout predation. Projection of our deterministic model suggested that, in addition to a decline in abundance of cutthroat trout, the effects of lake trout may be manifest as changes in age and breeding structure of the population. Simulations of a stochastic version of the model indicated that a 60% or greater decline in the cutthroat trout population could be expected within 100 years if the lake trout population were permitted to grow uncontrolled. However, an effective control strategy that prevented the establishment of a large population of lake trout substantially reduced population decline, although the reduction in the availability of adult trout to terrestrial predators and anglers may be still be substantial (20–40%). In addition to current control activities in place in the Park, we recommend a renewed emphasis on understanding and monitoring juvenile life stages of cutthroat trout. Our results demonstrate the value of existing data sets for developing models to estimate the potential impact of biological invasions on the management and conservation of native populations, especially when opportunities and resources for additional empirical studies are limited.  相似文献

Conservation strategies of forested landscapes must consider biodiversity of the included site types, i.e. timber-quality forests and associated non-timber-quality stands. The objectives were to characterize forest overstory structure in timber-quality versus associated non-timber-quality stands; and to compare their understory communities. Six forest types were sampled in Nothofagus forests of Tierra del Fuego (Argentina): two timber-quality N. pumilio forests, and four associated non-timber-quality stands (edge, N. antarctica, wetlands and streamside forests). Overstory structure and understory vegetation (species richness, frequencies, cover and biomass) were characterized during spring and summer seasons. Analysis of variance and multivariates were carried out. Overstory structure differed across the site types, with higher tree size, canopy closure and tree volume in timber-quality stands. Fifty-one understory plant species were observed, but understory variables varied with site types, especially wetlands (highest native and exotic richness, cover and biomass, and 25% of exclusive species). Site types were grouped in three: N. antarctica stands, streamside stands and the other N. pumilio forests according to multivariate analysis. Forty three percent of plants were distributed in all site types, and all timber-quality forest understory species were present in some associated non-timber-quality stands. Timber-quality N. pumilio forests have a marginal value for understory conservation compared to associated non-timber-quality stands, because these last include all the plants observed in timber-quality forests and also possess many exclusive species. Therefore, protection of associated non-timber-quality stands during forest management planning could increase understory conservation at landscape level, and these could be better reserves of understory diversity than retentions of timber-quality stands.  相似文献

Factors contributing to an invasion of the Asian woody vine Celastrus orbiculatus in a mesic forested Massachusetts (USA) sanctuary were investigated. Planting germinated C. orbiculatus seeds in the field revealed that, although they tolerate a wide range of conditions, seedlings grow largest in moist circumneutral soil under high irradiance. A study of naturally occurring vines in a logged forest suggested that C. orbiculatus invaded two years after harvest, and invasion may have been triggered by logging disturbance. Vine stems were more abundant on former logging roads than in surrounding selectively logged areas. Former logging roads had a significantly higher soil pH than surrounding areas and, due to the direction of construction, a significantly more southerly aspect. Fourteen years after harvest, logging roads continued to provide this aggressive exotic with superior habitat for establishment and growth.  相似文献

The role of parasites in a marine invasion was assessed by first examining regional patterns of trematode parasitism in the introduced Japanese mud snail, Batillaria cumingi (= B. attramentaria), in nearly all of its introduced range along the Pacific Coast of North America. Only one parasite species, which was itself a non-native species, Cercaria batillariae was recovered. Its prevalence ranged from 3 to 86%. Trematode diversity and prevalence in B. cumingi and a native sympatric mud snail, Cerithidea californica, were also compared in Bolinas Lagoon, California. Prevalence of larval trematodes infecting snails as first intermediate hosts was not significantly different (14% in B. cumingi vs 15% in C. californica). However, while the non-native snail was parasitized only by one introduced trematode species, the native snail was parasitized by 10 native trematode species. Furthermore, only the native, C. californica, was infected as a second intermediate host, by Acanthoparyphium spinulosum(78% prevalence). Given the high host specificity of trematodes for first intermediate hosts, in marshes where B. cumingi is competitively excluding C. californica, 10 or more native trematodes will also become locally extinct.  相似文献

Diachasmimorpha longicaudata(Ashmead) andPsyttalia fletcheri(Silvestri) are opiine parasitoids introduced into Hawaii for control of the Oriental fruit fly,Bactrocera dorsalis(Hendel) and the melon fly,Bactrocera cucurbitae(Coquillett), respectively. Gravid females ofD. longicaudataandP. fletcheriwere confined with bloomingD. raillardioidesflowerheads infested with late instarT. dubautiae.BothD. longicaudataandP. fletcherilacked positive oviposition responses toT. dubautiaelarvae in infested flowerheads and caused neither parasitism nor mortality to the flies. However, when larvae were removed from the flowerheads and presented in screened dishes containing artificial diet of the parasitoids' normal rearing hosts (B. dorsalisandB. cucurbitae), bothD. longicaudataandP. fletcherireadily oviposited in the test larvae. Oviposition byD. longicaudatadid not significantly affect the percentage pupation ofT. dubautiae,but did reduce the emergence of adult flies. Oviposition byP. fletcherisignificantly reduced both pupation and adult fly emergence. All progeny of both parasitoid species died as eggs or first-instar larvae. Results from our experiments demonstrate that biological control programs targeted against frugivorous tephritid pests byD. longicaudataandP. fletcherihave no harmful impact on flowerhead-infestingT. dubautiae.  相似文献

Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and crayfish, Orconectes virilis, have been introduced for the last century into North American streams inhabited by native fishes. We sought to determine the behavioral response of a federally threatened cyprinid, Little Colorado spinedace, Lepidomeda vittata, in the concurrent presence of multiple nonnative predators (rainbow trout and crayfish), as well as the response to the presence of a combination of native (Apache trout, Oncorhynchus apache) and nonnative (crayfish) predators. We held spinedace in artificial streams and exposed them to four treatments: (1) control, (2) crayfish added, (3) trout added, and (4) both crayfish and trout added. Only a single spinedace was consumed over the course of the experiments; it was captured and preyed upon by a crayfish. When both crayfish and Apache trout were present, spinedace response was similar to what it was when only Apache trout were present (decreased movement in and out of refuge), suggesting that crayfish and Apache trout did not mutually influence spinedace behavior. However, when both rainbow trout and crayfish were present, spinedace not only decreased movements in and out of refuge, but also decreased activity rates. We suggest that crayfish and rainbow trout mutually influence spinedace behavior and recommend control or elimination of crayfish and rainbow trout from spinedace critical habitat or potential reintroduction sites. In addition, potential reintroduction sites for Apache trout should be evaluated based on presence of crayfish and spinedace to avoid potential multiple predator interactions and negative effects on spinedace.  相似文献

Some alien tree species used in commercial forestry cause major problems as invaders of natural ecosystems. One such case, the black wattle tree, was introduced into South Africa from Australia in the 19th century. It is an important commercial species, as well as an aggressive invader, giving rise to significant environmental impacts and conflicts of interest. This paper provides an analysis of costs and benefits associated with this species in South Africa at a national level. The results suggest that a do nothing scenario (with no attempts being made to control the spread of the species beyond the limits of plantations) is not sustainable, as the benefit–cost ratio is around 0.4. The most attractive control option will be to combine physical clearing and plant-attacking biological control with the continuation of the commercial growing activities. In case this is not practically feasible the next best option is a combination of seed-attacking biological control, physical control and the development of secondary industries based on wood products from clearing programmes. There is, however, a 40% loss of benefits involved with this option when compared with the first best option. The techniques used in this study, and the findings relating to the scenarios that deliver the best returns on investment, should be of broad relevance to the problem of dealing with conflicts of interest relating to invasive alien plants that have commercial value.  相似文献

Norway maple (Acer platanoidesis) is invasive in a natural stand in suburban Ithaca, NY. To determine the understory pattern and consequences of a Norway maple invasion, I compared density and species richness under Norway maples and sugar maples (Acer saccharum). Mean sapling density was significantly lower (P<0.0027) under Norway maples (3.64/100 m2±1.6 SE) than under sugar maples (19.4/100 m2±4.4 SE). Mean sapling species richness was significantly lower (P<0.0018) under Norway maples (0.7/32 m2±0.18 SE) than under sugar maples (2.6/32 m2±0.48 SE). Likewise, Norway maple regeneration is more frequent under sugar maples than sugar maple regeneration: 57% of sugar maple plots had Norway maple saplings while 0% of Norway maple plots had sugar maple saplings. Two significant plot effects were found for presence–absence: Norway maple saplings grow under Norway maples with a significantly lower frequency (P<0.03) than under sugar maples; sugar maple saplings grow under Norway maples with a significantly lower frequency (P<0.000) than under sugar maples. Across the site, Norway maple saplings were the most abundant (29 saplings for 480 m2). The success of Norway maple regeneration and the reductions in total stem density beneath Norway maples is most likely the result of its strong competitive abilities, notably its high shade tolerance and abundant seed crops.  相似文献

Natural disturbances such as fires, windstorms, floods, and herbivory often act on plant communities, affecting their structure and the abundance and composition of their species. Most research has focused on the effects of single disturbances on plant communities whereas the synergistic effects of several disturbances have received less attention. In this study, we evaluated how timing and severity of tree mortality modified plant use by introduced deer and early post-mortality successional trajectories in northern Patagonian conifer forests. We sampled understory composition and deer use in Austrocedrus chilensis (ciprés de la cordillera) forest stands undergoing varying timing and severity of forest mortality as reconstructed using dendroecological techniques. In addition, we evaluated the effect of fallen logs on plant composition and deer use of plants by monitoring areas of massive dieback where fallen logs had been removed for fire hazard reduction, and nearby control areas not subjected to such removal. Stepwise regression analyses showed that history and severity of tree mortality strongly influence plant composition and deer use of plants. For deer use (with pellet counts and browsing index as response variables), results showed a positive relationship with degree of stand mortality and a negative relationship with cover of fallen logs. Similarly, cover of unpalatable shrub species was explained by canopy mortality history, whereas cover of palatable shrub species was positively associated with severity of canopy mortality. In areas where fallen logs had been removed, pellet counts were six times higher than those in control areas. Though total shrub species cover was similar between log removal and control areas, proportion of unpalatable shrubs increased in areas where fallen logs had been removed. In conclusion, deer use of plants was strongly limited by tall fallen logs, allowing palatable species to establish and grow. Fallen log removal accelerated deer entrance and changed understory composition toward more browse-resistant and unpalatable species. These results underscore the importance of considering the dynamics (timing, severity, and extent) of fallen woody debris influencing understory herbivory and post-disturbance succession. In addition, experimental results underpin the importance of maintaining snags and large woody debris in disturbed landscapes where salvage logging is a routine procedure.  相似文献

Over a period of 20 years, Chinese privet, Ligustrum sinense, invaded a mixed hardwood forest in western North Carolina, USA. The invasion penetrated about 30m under the canopy trees, providing 100% cover of the forest floor. Under the privets and in a nearby privet-poor reference area we marked off twenty, one square meter plots with string. All plants in each square meter of both areas were tallied in the spring of 1999 and young trees less than 1m high were again counted in September. We removed privets of the invaded area in November and again tallied all plants in both areas the following spring of 2000. In the spring of 1999, the mean number of herb species per square meter under the privet was 41%, and stem counts 75% less than in the reference area. 42% of herb species found in the reference area were missing under the privet. After removing the privets in the fall of 1999, the number of both native species and stems increased in the privet area the following spring. Plots of density of two native plants against privet density showed both native plants decreasing under increasing privet cover. In the spring of 1999, there were 4 species and 274 stems of tree seedlings in the privet area. In September of that year, we found only one small American holly tree, a highly shade-tolerant species, remaining under the privet. Our data support the thesis that Chinese privet can severely reduce herbaceous species and almost completely suppress tree regeneration in a mixed hardwood forest.  相似文献

In 1994, Mycoplasma gallisepticum, a common bacterial poultry pathogen, caused an epidemic in house finches in the eastern part of their North American range where the species had been introduced in the 1940s. Birds with mycoplasmal conjunctivitis were reported across the entire eastern United States within 3–4 years. Here we track the course of the Mycoplasma gallisepticum epidemic as it reached native, western North American populations of the house finch. In 2002, Mycoplasma gallisepticum was first observed in a native house finch population in Missoula, MT, where it gradually increased in prevalence during the next 2 years. Concurrently, house finches with conjunctivitis were reported with increasing number in the Pacific Northwest. In native populations of the host, the epidemic expanded more slowly, and reached lower levels of prevalence than in the eastern, introduced range of the species. Maximal prevalence was about half in the Missoula population than in local populations in the East. Although many factors can contribute to these differences, we argue that it is most likely the higher genetic heterogeneity in western than in eastern populations caused the lower impact of the pathogen.  相似文献

The mechanisms by which invasive species affect native communities are not well resolved. For example, invasive plants may influence other species through competition, altered ecosystem processes, or other pathways. We investigated one potential mechanism by which invasive plants may harm native species, allelopathy. Specifically, we explored whether native tree species respond differently to potential allelopathic effects of two invasive plant species. We assessed the separate effects of Lolium arundinaceam (tall fescue) and Elaeagnus umbellata (autumn olive) on three common successional tree species: Acer saccharinum (silver maple), Populus deltoides (eastern cottonwood), and Platanus occidentalis (sycamore). Tall fescue and autumn olive are widely planted and highly invasive or persistent throughout North America where they often grow in forest edges, old fields, and other sites colonized by pioneering tree species. In an exploratory greenhouse experiment, we applied aqueous extracts derived from soil, leaf litter, or live leaves to native trees. We compared these treatments to a sterile water control and also to minced leaves leached in water, a common, but potentially less realistic method of testing for allelopathy. For all tree species, minced leaves from tall fescue reduced the probability that seedlings emerged, and minced leaves of autumn olive reduced the number of days to emergence. During other demographic stages, the three native tree species diverged in their responses to the invasive plants. Platanus occidentalis exhibited the widest range of responses, with reduced root biomass due to minced tissue from both invasive species, reduced days to emergence and marginally reduced survival from minced tall fescue, and reduced leaf biomass from tall fescue leaf litter. Populus deltoides appeared insensitive to most extracts, although survival was marginally increased with application of minced or fresh leaf extracts from autumn olive. In addition, minced tall fescue shortened the time to seedling emergence for Acer saccharinum, potentially a positive effect. Overall, results suggest that allelopathy may be one mechanism underlying the negative impacts of tall fescue and autumn olive on other plant species, but that effects can depend strongly upon the source of allelochemicals and the tree species examined.  相似文献

Large, infrequent natural disturbances have been proposed as a key component in determining the distribution and abundance of Nothofagus in southern Andean temperate forests. In this study, a comparison of influences of small-to-intermediate-sized natural disturbances and effects of selective logging on the establishment and growth of Nothofagus forests in south-central Chile are synthesized with the results of other forest studies to develop general hypotheses on the regeneration dynamics of southern Chilean Nothofagus alpina forests. A synthesis is given for regeneration pattern in the abundance of 18 temperate rain forests in the Andean Range, Chile. The study aimed to determine the role of life history differences in promoting coexistence of the five main tree species (N. alpina, N. dombeyi, N. pumilio, N. macrocarpa and Laurelia philippiana) in N. alpina-dominated forests. Age data reported for N. alpina, a shade mid-tolerant emergent tree in the temperate rain forests of southern Chile, indicate maximum lifespans > 650 years, figures unprecedented for N. alpina. In low elevation stands, N. alpina coexists with broad-leaved evergreen tree species, such as L. philippiana, L. sempervirens, Persea lingue, and in these stands an intermittent establishment of Nothofagus occurred and appeared to be most dependent on small-to-intermediate disturbances. In high-elevation stands, in contrast, Nothofagus establishment was less dependent on disturbance, regeneration being much more continuous even in the absence of canopy openings. The forests studied provide another example of the general pattern of increasing dependence of Nothofagus on disturbance towards the more productive end of the environmental gradients. As a long-lived pioneer and despite its dependence on disturbance in lowland sites, N. alpina has been subject to selection for complementary growth, adult survivorship, and mid-tolerance to shade. Thus, interspecific differences in juvenile and adult life history characteristics of N. alpina and its competitors may be sufficient to maintain its persistence in the landscape. In conclusion, this study of population structures and replacement patterns provides a comprehensive picture on our understanding of regeneration dynamics and trait differentiation in southern temperate forests by recognizing both the influences of environmental gradients (i.e., altitude) on competing species and the disturbance regimes. Forest plantations of exotic conifers represent an important economic activity in NW Patagonia, Argentina. However, there is a remarkable lack of information on the impact of forestry on native biodiversity. We analyzed the effect of Pinus ponderosa plantations on bird communities, considering different stand management practices (dense and sparse tree covers), and different landscape contexts where they are planted (Austrocedrus chilensis forest and steppe). Ultimately we wished to assess in which way plantations may be designed and managed to improve biodiversity conservation. Bird richness and abundance did not change significantly in the steppe, although community composition did, and was partially replaced by a new community, similar to that of ecotonal forests. In contrast, in the A. chilensis forest areas, species richness decreased in dense plantations, but bird community composition remained relatively constant when replacing the native forest with pine plantations. Also, in A. chilensis forest, stand management practices aiming at maintaining low tree densities permit the presence of many bird species from the original habitat. In the steppe area in turn, both dense and sparse plantations are unsuitable for most steppe species, thus it is necessary to manage them at higher scales, maintaining the connectivity of the native matrix to prevent the fragmentation of bird populations. We conclude that pine plantations can provide habitat for a substantial number of native bird species, and this feature varies both with management practices and with the landscape context of areas where afforestation occurs.  相似文献

Nothofagus pumilio (Poepp et Endl.) Krasser is the dominant subalpine tree in the southern Andes between 36°S and 55°S. Increment cores from a N. pumilio stand growing near the Ameghino Glacier (50°25S, 73°10W), southern Patagonian Andes, Argentina, contain significant numbers of intra-annual bands (or false rings) which have not been previously described for this species. These samples are used to develop a well-replicated ring-width chronology and a record of intra-annual bands from AD 1760 to 1997. Annual variations in radial growth of N. pumilio at this site are negatively correlated with spring–summer temperatures and positively with spring precipitation. The formation of intra-annual bands appears to be a response to anomalously dry-warm springs followed by wet-warm late summers. Intra-annual bands may occur in up to 95% of the sampled trees in a given year, and the percentage of trees affected was used as an indication of the strength of the forcing event. Narrow rings occurred in the years following intra-annual band formation, reflecting the lagged effect of unfavorable climatic conditions on tree growth during the subsequent growing season. Intra-annual bands occurred more frequently in the twentieth century than the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This contrasting pattern seems to be a response to the combination of a long-term warming trend and a significant decrease in precipitation recorded during the last 100 years in this region of southern South America.

The seeds of both cedar-of-Lebanon (Cedrus libani) and Cyprus cedar (Cedrus brevifolia) are attacked in their natural range by a specialised chalcid, Megastigmus schimitscheki. From 1995 to 1999, seeds were screened for insect damage in the main cedar plantations of southern France, as well as in the stands where cedar is mixed with firs (Abies spp.). X-rays were used to identify chalcid-infested seeds from which the insects were then reared. The surveys revealed the presence of M. schimitscheki in all the stands of Atlas cedar, Cedrus atlantica, planted at Mt Ventoux, southeastern France. The chalcid also infested seeds of an exotic fir, Abies pinsapo, planted in the same area. However, it has not yet reached the cedar plantations in southwestern France, where the seeds are colonised by a related exotic insect, Megastigmus pinsapinis, originating from North Africa. The latter species was common in cedar seeds at Mt Ventoux in the early 1990s but seems to have been supplanted by M. schimitscheki in the invasion zone. A native chalcid species, Megastigmus suspectus, was also shown to have shifted to a slight extent from a native fir, A. alba, onto cedar. The presence of three chalcid species competing for cedar seed resources may result in a substantial decline of the regeneration potential of that tree species. At Mt Ventoux, up to 92.6% of the cedar seeds were attacked, with 86.8% due to M. schimitscheki. The survey also revealed the widespread presence of another North American chalcid, Megastigmus rafni, in the fir stands of southern France. The exotic Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, was recently introduced to the northeastern coast of North America and during the 1990's breeding populations were established throughout southern New England. In 1997–1998, ecological studies of several co-occurring brachyuran crabs were conducted and in native (Tanabe Bay, Japan) and invaded (Long Island Sound, USA) habitats of H. sanguineus. Standardized comparisons of H. sanguineus were made between the 2 habitats using data on crab sizes, utilization of space, and food habits. Results revealed that (1) the resource use of H. sanguineus was quite different from that of other resident species in its invaded habitat, and (2) there were no substantial changes in resource utilization by H. sanguineus after it became established in the invaded habitat (relative to native Tanabe Bay). Differing patterns of resource use by H. sanguineus and other crabs in the invaded habitat, the lack of restriction in resource use by H. sanguineus following its introduction, and the climatological and physical similarities between native and invaded regions likely contributed to the successful invasion of H. sanguineus into rocky intertidal habitats in southern New England.  相似文献

The estuarine mud snail, Batillaria attramentaria, was transported to the Pacific coast of North America with the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas (C. gigas), imported from Japan in the early part of this century, and has proliferated in several bays where the oyster was introduced. Since the arrival of Batillaria there have been declines in populations of its native ecological equivalent, Cerithidea californica. This study documents the distribution of the exotic Batillaria throughout its entire introduced range, concentrating on the few bays in northern California where both snails exist sympatrically. Using dates of initial importation of C. gigas and dates of first documentation of Batillaria within a bay, I established the earliest possible date for the introduction of Batillaria in a particular area. In cases where Cerithidea also was, or had been, present within a bay, I calculated a range of time for either the continued coexistence of the two species or the time until local exclusion of the native. Density measurements of Cerithidea within these bays where the species co-occurred allowed comparison of present Cerithidea numbers to historical accounts. Results indicated that Batillaria is replacing Cerithidea in the northern marshes of California. This replacement of the northernmost Cerithidea populations is not only reducing Cerithidea's overall range, but also eliminating a race recently shown to be a genetically distinct from southern Cerithidea populations. Other studies that have demonstrated superior exploitative competitive ability by Batillaria provide a potential mechanism for this displacement pattern. Regardless, the results presented here indicate that the displacement process is slow, taking on average >50 years to complete. This study illustrates a gradual, but predictable process of exotic replacement of native species, and argues strongly against complacency toward invaders that may currently seem innocuous. The response of three larval–pupal parasitoids,Diachasmimorpha longicaudata(Ashmead),Diachasmimorpha tryoni(Cameron), andTetrastichus giffardianusSilvestri, to the Hamakua pamakani gall fly,Procecidochares alaniL., was determined in the laboratory. We also observed responses of these parasitoids to their normal rearing hosts,Bactrocera dorsalis(Hendel) andCeratitis capitata(Weidemann).D. tryonilanded on pamakani galls or on dishes containingP. alanilarvae as frequently as on dishes containingC. capitata.In contrast,D. longicaudataonly rarely landed on the galls.D. tryoniandD. longicaudataoviposited in galls in fewer than 1% of our observations.D. longicaudataprobedP. alanilarvae as frequently asB. dorsalislarvae, but no parasitoid offspring were observed.D. tryonioviposited more frequently inC. capitatathanP. alani.NoD. tryonideveloped inP. alanilarvae.T. giffardianuslanded on pamakani galls andP. alanilarvae more frequently than any other host substrate. In contrast,T. giffardianusentered galls with artificially opened windows one time in 10 observations. We observed 12% parasitism ofP. alanilarvae dissected from the galls and 20% of parasitismP. alaniin the windowed galls.
