In this study we sequenced two mitochondrial (COI and 16S rRNA) and one nuclear (18S rRNA) gene fragment of an introduced muzzled blenny (Omobranchus punctatus) specimen collected from the Orinoco Delta (Gulf of Paria estuary) in Venezuela. This is the first genetic data generated for this species' introduced range in Central and South America, suggesting an introduction from the Indian Ocean.  相似文献

An updated molecular phylogeny of the blenny genus Ophioblennius, with a focus on two geographically disjunct morphotypes observed in Brazil, is presented. The analyses showed that specimens from the north‐eastern Brazilian coast are the endemic redlip blenny Ophioblennius trinitatis, but specimens from the southern Brazilian coast are conspecific to an undescribed east Atlantic Ocean (Gulf of Guinea) species, previously unknown in Brazil. Possible explanations for this geographical pattern include: natural larval dispersal and rafting across the Atlantic; an unknown ecological attribute that enabled this species to colonize southern Brazil; oil platforms as introduction vectors.  相似文献

In public goods games, group members share the benefits created through individual investments. If benefits are shared equally, individual contributions readily become altruistic, and hence, a social dilemma arises in which group interests and individual interests oppose each other. However, contributions to public goods can be self‐serving if each investor gains a disproportionate benefit from its own contribution. This scenario may hold for our study system, the interactions of shoaling‐unrelated scalefin anthias Pseudanthias squamipinnis and the ectoparasitic blenny Plagiotremus tapeinosoma. The blenny bites off pieces of skin, mucus and scales from anthias that in return may chase the blenny. Chasing the blenny represents a public good as it makes the parasite change victim species for its next attack. Laboratory experiments using artificial Plexiglas hosts suggest that one reason why individuals contribute to the public good is that the blenny may specialise on non‐punishing ‘free‐riders’. Here, we investigated how far a spatial structure within the shoal and limited space use by the blenny may contribute to punishment being self‐serving. Field observation reveals that anthias indeed live in spatially structured groups and that blennies have preferred areas for attacks. Thus, some anthias individuals are consistently more exposed to blennies than others and hence may gain disproportional benefits from their punishment. In conclusion, spatial structure may contribute to the maintenance of punishment in blenny–anthias interactions even when groups are large.  相似文献

A number of potential mimetic relationships between coral reef fishes have been described, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Similarities in colour between species have often been attributed to aggressive mimicry (where predators resemble models in order to deceive prey), however this has not been tested. The fang blenny, Plagiotremus rhinorhynchos is a specialized predator that feeds on tissues of other fishes. Some individuals appear to mimic the harmless cleaner wrasse Labroides dimidiatus in order to deceive fish visiting cleaning stations, thereby increasing access to food. In this study, the ecological relationship between the mimic and model was examined at Kimbe Bay (Papua New Guinea) and the hypothesis that colour similarities represent facultative aggressive mimicry was experimentally evaluated. Some juveniles exhibited a striking resemblance to the juvenile colouration of the cleaner wrasse, but only when in close proximity to the wrasse and only when similar in size. As predicted for mimics, P. rhinorhynchos co-occurred with L. dimidiatus, but was rare relative to the model. Among site comparisons showed that the abundance of mimetic type blennies was positively correlated with the abundance of juvenile cleaner wrasses. Approximately 50% of all P. rhinorhynchos were found 1 m from the nearest L. dimidiatus, a distance significantly shorter than expected if they were not associated. A cleaner wrasse removal experiment was carried out to test whether the colour displayed by the blenny and its foraging success were contingent upon the presence of a model. In all cases, removal of the model prompted a rapid colour change to a general non-mimetic colouration in P. rhinorhynchos. Removal of L. dimidiatus also resulted in a ~20% reduction in the average foraging success of the blenny compared to controls, supporting the hypothesis that the blenny is a facultative aggressive mimic of the cleaner wrasse.  相似文献

Effects of artificial salmon lice infection and pharmaceutical salmon lice prophylaxis on survival and rate of progression of Atlantic salmon (n = 72) and brown trout post-smolts (n = 72) during their fjord migration, were studied by telemetry. The infected groups were artificially exposed to infective salmon lice larvae in the laboratory immediately before release in the inner part of the fjord to simulate a naturally high infection pressure. Groups of infected Atlantic salmon (n = 20) and brown trout (n = 12) were also retained in the hatchery to control the infection intensity and lice development during the study period. Neither salmon lice infection nor pharmaceutical prophylaxis had any effects on survival and rate of progression of fjord migrating Atlantic salmon post-smolts compared to control fish. Atlantic salmon spent on average only 151.2 h (maximum 207.3 h) in passing the 80 km fjord system and had, thus, entered the ocean when the more pathogenic pre-adult and adult lice stages developed. The brown trout, in comparison to Atlantic salmon, remained to a larger extent than Atlantic salmon in the inner part of the fjord system. No effect of salmon lice infection, or protection, was found in brown trout during the first weeks of their fjord migration. Brown trout will, to a larger extent than Atlantic salmon, stay in the fjord areas when salmon lice infections reach the more pathogenic pre-adult and adult stages. In contrast to Atlantic salmon, they will thereby possess the practical capability of returning to freshwater when encountering severe salmon lice attacks.  相似文献

Life‐history traits of exotic species are important to understand the process involved in their settlement and their potential impact on native biodiversity. In this context, the seasonal density, the population structure and the reproductive patterns of exotic and native peracarid species of two natural marine environments of Southwestern Atlantic were studied in order to determine the traits that favour the invasion success of exotic species. Five samples, consisted of algal patches (0.20 × 0.20 m quadrants), were collected seasonally from 2016 to 2017 in two intertidal environments (La Estafeta and Cerro Avanzado). Both environments presented high richness of cryptogenic and exotic species (Tanais dulongii, Monocorophium insidiosum, Ampithoe valida, Melita palmata and Jassa marmorata), and only two native species were recorded (Apohyale grandicornis and Exosphaeroma lanceolatum). The comparison of life‐history traits suggested that the distribution, dominance and the highest densities of some exotic species are closely related to their continuous reproductive and recruitment periods, their capability to adapt their life‐history strategies to different environmental conditions and to a more efficient distribution of resources during reproduction; however, in native species, only A. grandicornis registered similar life‐history traits than exotic populations, suggesting that their distribution could be limited by a latitudinal gradient. We expect that these results provide essential information to understand the invasion pattern of exotic species and their potential impact on native biodiversity in Southwestern Atlantic.  相似文献

Distinguishing natural versus anthropogenic dispersal of organisms is essential for determining the native range of a species and implementing an effective conservation strategy. For cryptogenic species with limited historical records, molecular data can help to identify introductions. Nematostella vectensis is a small, burrowing estuarine sea anemone found in tidally restricted salt marsh pools. This species’ current distribution extends over three coast lines: (i) the Atlantic coast of North America from Nova Scotia to Georgia, (ii) the Pacific coast of North America from Washington to central California, and (iii) the southeast coast of England. The 1996 IUCN Red List designates N. vectensis as “vulnerable” in England. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprinting of 516 individuals from 24 N. vectensis populations throughout its range and mtDNA sequencing of a subsample of these individuals strongly suggest that anthropogenic dispersal has played a significant role in its current distribution. Certain western Atlantic populations of N. vectensis exhibit greater genetic similarity to Pacific populations or English populations than to other western Atlantic populations. At the same time, F-statistics showing high degrees of genetic differentiation between geographically proximate populations support a low likelihood for natural dispersal between salt marshes. Furthermore, the western Atlantic harbors greater genetic diversity than either England or the eastern Pacific. Collectively, these data clearly imply that N. vectensis is native to the Atlantic coast of North America and that populations along the Pacific coast and in England are cases of successful introduction.  相似文献

The mimic blenny Aspidontus taeniatus Quoy & Gaimard is well known for its resemblance to the juvenile and adult cleaner wrasse Labroides dimidiatus (Valenciennes) in colour and shape. As various reef fishes including piscivores actively approach the cleaner wrasse to solicit cleaning by posing, two types of benefits have been suggested for this resemblance, that is, protective mimicry and aggressive mimicry. In aggressive mimicry, the mimic blenny is supposed to have considerable opportunities to bite the fin of deceived fishes when they pose, but some studies have confirmed that fin biting does not seem to be the main feeding tactic in the blenny in nature. Here, we examined the feeding tactics including fin biting by the mimic blenny in relation to its body size in a field observational survey in the coral reefs of Sesoko Island, Okinawa, Japan. The blenny was observed feeding mainly on four food items: the tentacles of Christmas tree worms, the mantle edges of boring clams, the demersal eggs in damselfishes’ nests and the fins of fishes. The feeding frequency by fin biting significantly decreased with body size, while that by egg predation significantly increased with body size of the blenny. When predating on eggs, the blenny was vigorously attacked by egg‐guarding fish, but often succeeded in raiding their nests by forming a feeding group. When feeding by fin biting, the blenny attacked prey fish without performing any cleaning. The ratio of fin biting was considerably higher in small‐sized blennies, suggesting reliance on this feeding tactic because of a difficulty in conducting a risky egg predation. Thus, our results suggest that the mimic blenny utilizes aggressive mimicry only when it is small as an alternative feeding tactic.  相似文献

We counted individuals of the family Blenniidae and estimated their sizes on gas platforms southeast of Dauphin Island, Alabama. We observed species abundance decreasing as depth increased. Fish sizes also decreased with depth. The most abundant species was molly miller, Scartella cristata, followed by plumed blenny, Hypleurochilus multifilis, tessellated blenny, Hypsoblennius invemar, and seaweed blenny, Parablennius marmoreus. Total blenny abundance was positively related to the barnacle, Megabalanus antillensis, and dissolved oxygen concentrations, and inversely related to Anthozoa. Individually, S. cristata was correlated with M. antillensis, and inversely related to salinity, while the other blenny species showed more complex correlations to invertebrates. As a community, blennies showed a clear separation based on depth independent of offshore/inshore sites and sample date based on multidimensional scaling analyses. Our study suggests that attached invertebrates, particularly M. antillensis, provided a predation refuge, allowing these blenny species to exist in an otherwise unsuitable habitat, i.e. open shallow waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico.  相似文献

Patterns of geographic variation within and between regional samples of the large rufous western Amazon squirrels (Sciurus) are described based on univariate and multivariate analyses. Two species are clearly recognizable by independent patterns of geographic variation in measured characters, non‐overlapping qualitative cranial features, and certain pelage color characteristics. These species are a long‐muzzled, narrow‐skulled 5. spadiceus Olfers and a more normal‐muzzled, broader‐skulled S. igniventris Wagner. The two are sympatric over all of eastern Ecuador and most of Perú; only spadiceus is known from Bolivia.  相似文献

Crabs are among the most conspicuous and ecologically important invertebrates of the large intertidal zones that characterize estuarine and protected coastal areas in temperate regions. The habitat, population structure and breeding cycle of Chasmagnathus granulatus (Brachyura: Varunidae), a semiterrestrial burrowing crab endemic to the warm temperate coasts of the Southwestern Atlantic, were studied in San Antonio Bay (Argentina), near the southern limit of its range. San Antonio Bay has no freshwater input, winter is relatively colder, and summer warmer, than northern habitats of this species. Crabs lived both in vegetated and unvegetated zones, but density and sex ratio varied among dates and zones. The maximum observed density was 136 crabs/m2 , the maximum carapace width (CW) was 32 mm (males) and 29.8 mm (females), ovigerous females were found only in November and January, and the smallest ovigerous female measured 17 mm CW. The population structure, spatial distribution, and recruitment pattern of C. granulatusdid not differ between San Antonio Bay and northern habitats. The higher density, smaller maximum size and shorter reproductive cycle observed in San Antonio cannot be atributed to changes associated with a latitudinal cline and other factors, such as thermal amplitude and food availability, need to be studied.  相似文献

Clerid beetles are common natural enemies of bark beetles, and could potentially be used as biological control agents if they could be reared in sufficient numbers. We developed an artificial diet devoid of insect components for rearing Thanasimus dubius (Fabricius), a clerid that attacks several economically important bark beetles in eastern North America. We reared larvae of this predator using the artificial diet, and then used either natural or factitious prey to feed the adults so produced. Two different methods of presenting the diet were also examined. We then compared the performance of T. dubius reared on the artificial diet with newly-emerged wild individuals collected from the field. Our results suggest that adult predators reared on the diet are near in quality to wild ones, and high R0 values can be obtained. No difference in prey preference was found between wild and diet-reared individuals after five generations in the laboratory. Sufficient numbers of predators could be generated using these techniques to permit limited field trials of augmentative biological control.  相似文献

Although humpback whales are among the best-studied of the large whales, population boundaries in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) have remained largely untested. We assess population structure of SH humpback whales using 1,527 samples collected from whales at fourteen sampling sites within the Southwestern and Southeastern Atlantic, the Southwestern Indian Ocean, and Northern Indian Ocean (Breeding Stocks A, B, C and X, respectively). Evaluation of mtDNA population structure and migration rates was carried out under different statistical frameworks. Using all genetic evidence, the results suggest significant degrees of population structure between all ocean basins, with the Southwestern and Northern Indian Ocean most differentiated from each other. Effective migration rates were highest between the Southeastern Atlantic and the Southwestern Indian Ocean, followed by rates within the Southeastern Atlantic, and the lowest between the Southwestern and Northern Indian Ocean. At finer scales, very low gene flow was detected between the two neighbouring sub-regions in the Southeastern Atlantic, compared to high gene flow for whales within the Southwestern Indian Ocean. Our genetic results support the current management designations proposed by the International Whaling Commission of Breeding Stocks A, B, C, and X as four strongly structured populations. The population structure patterns found in this study are likely to have been influenced by a combination of long-term maternally directed fidelity of migratory destinations, along with other ecological and oceanographic features in the region.  相似文献

Since its first introduction into the Atlantic for farming purposes in 1983, the brown alga Undaria pinnatifida has been found at several sites along the European coasts. The present study deals with an ecological experiment that was performed at the island of Ushant (Brittany, France) in order to check the ability of Undaria to recruit to a rocky substratum in situ. On the one hand, the authors were unsuccessful in getting Undaria to colonize a previously denuded area of shore, which was subsequently colonized by other native species, a result that may speak for a competition between Undaria and the local kelps. On the other hand, evidence is presented that Undaria pinnatifida has become a member of the Atlantic flora for good. The sporophytes can be found growing from low water mark of neap tide (+1.5 m) down to at least –15 m below lower water mark of spring tide. Its propagation is thought to occur in at least two ways: either step by step from cultivation sites along the coasts, or from the hulls of ships sailing from harbour to harbour. The preference of Undaria for settlement is on artificial structures.  相似文献

We examined the polymorphism of the lysyl oxidase (LOX) locus, involved in the initiation of muscle collagen cross-linking, in three populations of Atlantic salmon with different life histories and growth rates and compared it with a closely related species (rainbow trout). Up to four alleles were observed per individual, probably as a consequence of the tetraploid origin of the salmonid genome. We found high polymorphism in the LOX locus (16 alleles expressed in total and several low frequency private alleles) in two natural Atlantic salmon populations and extremely reduced diversity in a farmed population (3 alleles) with low density of collagen crosslinks. We also assessed the relative role of selection in maintaining LOX genetic variability in Atlantic salmon. Results from several neutrality tests suggest that selection is playing a role in shaping diversity at the LOX locus. Positive selection was inferred by three different likelihood phylogeny-based methods and one selected site, identified by all three different methods (PAML, FEL and REL) was located within the “copper-talon” characteristic of LOX proteins. We suggest that the retention of four alleles in the salmon LOX locus could be related to its multiple functions.  相似文献

The aquatic macrophyte Stratiotes aloides Linnaeus, which has recently received attention in studies on allelopathy, has been shown to suppress phytoplankton growth. In the Netherlands, S. aloides often co-occurs with floating filamentous algae. However, filamentous algae are generally absent in close proximity to S. aloides, resulting in gaps in filamentous algae mats. We analyzed whether those gaps may be caused by allelopathic substances excreted by S. aloides or by nutrient depletion. We studied in a field survey the colonization of natural S. aloides by filamentous algae and determined in situ nutrient concentrations in natural S. aloides stands. To analyze the relative importance of allelopathy and nutrient competition in the interaction between S. aloides and filamentous algae, we carried out field experiments. Introduction of artificial (non-allelopathic) plants in natural S. aloides stands enabled us to compare the colonization by filamentous algae of both Stratiotes sp. and artificial plants. The filamentous algae were absent in close vicinity to S. aloides. Significantly lower concentrations of ortho-phosphate and potassium were observed close to S. aloides as compared with the filamentous algae. In the field experiments the artificial plants were rapidly colonized by filamentous algae, mainly Cladophera Kützing and Spirogyra Link, while all natural plants remained free of such algae. Additionally, most nutrient concentrations did not significantly differ in the proximity of artificial or natural stands of S. aloides. The concentrations of the major growth-limiting nutrients, phosphate and nitrate, were significantly higher and nonlimiting in natural Stratiotes stands. Our main conclusion is that, although allelopathic interactions between S. aloides and filamentous algae do occur under natural conditions, nutrient competition between the two can also be an important factor.  相似文献

Trichodesmium sp. IMS 101, originally isolated from coastal western Atlantic waters by Prufert-Bebout and colleagues and maintained in seawater-based media, was successfully cultivated in two artificial media. Its characteristics of growth, nitrogen fixation, and regulation of nitrogen fixation were compared to those of natural populations and Trichodesmium sp. NIBB 1067. Results indicate that the culture grown in artificial media had nitrogen fixation characteristics similar to those when the culture is grown in seawater-based medium and to those of Trichodesmium sp. in the natural habitat. The study provides practical artificial media to facilitate the physiological studies of these important diazotrophic cyanobacteria, as well as the cultivation of other Trichodesmium species in future studies. Manipulations of the light/dark cycle were performed to determine whether or not the daily cycle of nitrogen fixation is a circadian rhythm. Cultures grown under continuous light maintained the cycle for up to 6 days. We demonstrated that the daily cycle of nitrogen fixation in Trichodesmium sp. IMS 101 was at least partially under the control of a circardian rhythm.  相似文献

Field observations on feeding and related behavior of the mimic blennyAspidontus taeniatus and 3 species closely related to it, and the cleaner fish (model)Labroides dimidiatus were made at the coral reef of Sesoko Island, Okinawa, Japan, along with analysis of gut contents. The mimic blenny fed mostly on demersal eggs of fishes and tentacles of polychaetes, but it rarely tore pieces from the fins of host fishes even when they were posing for cleaning. The feeding habits of the mimic blenny are compared with those in other localities and with those of related species. It is concluded that the mimicry can hardly be regarded as an aggressive one: posing by host fishes seems to be a secondary result of the resemblance which may have developed because of the benefit for immunity from predation, and the resemblance itself prevents the blenny from becoming a specialized fin-eater because it can be easily recognized by host fishes.  相似文献

Summary It has been claimed that Borage (Borago officInalis L.) has a multifactorial self-incompatibility system. Such systems may have a high level of ineffective pollination, and we show that this is the case in borage. The ranking of seed set from highest to lowest is as follows: bee-pollination; natural pollination in the absence of bees; artificial cross-pollination between unrelated plants; artificial cross-pollination between related plants; artificial self-pollination. In diallel crosses, significant parental effects were detected but no consistent patterns of seed set, which suggest a simple self-incompatibility system, were detected. The level of outcrossing with natural pollination was very variable but greater than 50%. Thus, there appears to be no straightforward self-incompatibility system in borage.  相似文献

Careful analysis of gut contents has resulted in the reclassification of several species of grazing fish as detritivores, shifting the trophodynamic assignment of many prominent reef grazers. Combtoothed blennies, which are among the most numerous grazing fish of the Great Barrier Reef, have been shown to target the detrital component of the epilithic algal matrix (EAM). It has been suggested that blennies have specialized dental morphology that allows them to comb through fronds of algae, collecting detritus, while leaving the algal component intact. In this study, we analysed the capability of a common reef flat blenny, Salarias fasciatus, to remove algae by (i) examining oral morphology for evidence of wear and adaptations for abrasion, and (ii) a short-term EAM feeding experiment. Examination of S. fasciatus teeth with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed evidence of macrowear (changes in tooth height or shape), microwear (surface chips and striae), and tooth replacement that suggests abrasion on the substrate. Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS) revealed that oral teeth incorporate mineral iron. When fed artificial substrata with a developed EAM layer S. fasciatus removed 57% of photosynthetic material and 38.5% of organic biomass. Although studies have found that blenny gut contents consist predominantly of detritus, blennies are still likely to contribute to the removal of algae on coral reefs.  相似文献
