1 Studies on aphidophagous coccinellids have indicated that patch quality, and, in particular, the age structure of the prey or the phenological age of the plant, may play an important role in stimulating oviposition behaviour. However, little is known about the egg‐laying tactics of coccidophagous species. 2 When restricted to a single, large colony of overlapping generations of their diaspid host Abgrallaspis cyanophylli (Signoret), adult females of the coccidophagous ladybird Chilocorus nigritus F. varied their egg production rate in a cyclic pattern that lasted for approximately 22 days. This information was used to generate hypotheses relating to eliciting cues for oviposition. 3 Two experiments were carried out in the absence of conspecific larvae to assess: (i) whether changes in host density at levels above those needed to sustain egg production in the females affected egg output and (ii) the effect of restricting beetles to various homogeneous prey population structures on daily egg production. 4 Changes in host density caused a significant but transient decline in egg production whereas a heterogeneous prey population elicited significantly higher levels of oviposition than homogeneous ones with similar host densities, irrespective of the growth stage of the prey. 5 Beetles were fed to satiation throughout the experiments but the data obtained suggest that cues for eliciting oviposition operated in a density‐dependent fashion. The results of the study are used to discuss the possibility that visual and chemical cues are quantitatively used by ovipositing beetles to assess patch suitability.  相似文献

The effects of temperature on age-specific fecundity, egg viability and egg cannibalism were examined in the coccidophagous coccinellid, Chilocorus nigritus being fed on the cyanophyllum scale, Abgrallaspis cyanophylli. There were no significant differences in lifetime fecundity or oviposition rate at constant temperatures in the range of 20 to 30°C although there was a trend for both parameters to increase with increasing temperatures. Total fecundity ranged from five to 1890 eggs per female whilst the oviposition rate varied from 0.2–12.1 eggs day-1. Egg viability was significantly greater at 26 and 30°C (63 and 74%, respectively) than at lower temperatures (18 to 30%) whilst egg cannibalism was highest at 24 and 26°C (being the mid range of the temperatures tested). Mean pre-oviposition periods varied from 54 days at 20°C to 8.2 days at 30°C. The effect of relative humidities in the range of 33% to 75% on oviposition rate, egg viability and egg cannibalism was measured and found to have no significant effect on either parameter.  相似文献

A method of estimating the weight ofindividual Abgrallaspis cyanophylli (Signoret)without the need for removal from the host plant isdescribed. Using this method, which enables accurateestimations of scale insect weight by measuring lengthand relating it to a previously determined regressionmodel, maximum feeding potential in male and femaleChilocorus nigritus (F.) adults was examined atvarious constant temperatures over the range of 13 to30 °C and at a cycling temperature of 12 h/12 hat 14/30 °C (r.h. in the range of 62 to 68%). Mean daily potential food intake varied from 0.097 mg/day at 13 °C to 1.432 mg/day at 30 °C.However, intake at the cycling temperature was significantly higher than that at constant temperatures (1.98 mg/day). At 15, 20 and 30 °C there were no significant differences between male and female potential food requirements whilst at temperatures in the mid range, there was a considerable increase in female potential voracitywhen compared to that of the males. Maximum potentiallarval food requirement for development at 26 °Cand 62% r.h. in C. nigritus was also estimatedusing the above method. A mean of 16.24 mg of Abgrallaspis cyanophylli (Signoret) was required forlarvae of both sexes to complete development. Thisstudy suggests that C. nigritus would be mostefficient as a biological control agent if used inglasshouses with a mean daily temperature above22 °C.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The hypothesis was tested that intraspecific behavioural interference does not adversely affect the feeding behaviour of adults of three predatory coccinellid species, Chilocorus nigritus (F.), C.bipustulatus (L.) and C.infernalis Mulsant, at densities found under field conditions.
2. Feeding rates on mature oleander scale Aspidiotus nerii Bouché were evaluated by two methods at various predator densities. Proportion of the population dispersing was also measured for one of the species.
3. Feeding rate did not decrease and dispersal did not increase with increasing predator density. No significant behavioural interference that might have reduced predatory efficiency was observed, counter to assumptions on which published interference models are based.
4. Results here help to explain the relative importance of parasitoids and predators in the effective control of red scale Aonidiella aurantii (Mask.). The results also provide guidelines for release of these bio-control agents.  相似文献

The ecology of and biological control by multicoloured Asian ladybird beetle, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) are reviewed. Our emphasis is on assembling and interpreting information on general characteristics, invasion and establishment, sexual activity, foraging and predation, development, survival and reproduction, predator-predator interactions, natural enemies, biocontrol, non-target effects and status of H. axyridis as a pest of fruits. Colonization of H. axyridis for aphid biocontrol in the USA have been successful in terms of its establishment, but its abundance is turning out to be a nuisance to humans. Its harmful non-target impact on beneficial organisms, humans and native species is becoming a debatable issue. The question on its present position, whether it is a biocontrol agent or pest, is a critical issue and discussed. Inferences from the empirical data are made and new avenues for future research are suggested.  相似文献

Orientation to host plant and host insect volatiles in the coccidophagous coccinellid, Chilocorus nigritus (F.) was examined using a four-arm olfactometer. Experienced adult females were attracted towards the combination of Solanum tuberosum L. and Abgrallaspis cyanophylli (Sign.) odours, walked further and spent longer in their presence, and showed an increased turning rate and net speed than in their absence. Host plant volatiles increased speed but decreased turning rates compared with odourless controls, but elicited no strongly directional response. It is postulated that this beetle and other coccinellids have a hierarchical prey-location mechanism which involves host habitat location based on olfactory responses.  相似文献

Developmental and immature survival rates of the coccidophagous coccinellid Chilocorus nigritus (F.) were examined under constant, cycling and glasshouse temperatures in order to determine its suitability for use as a biological control agent in temperature glasshouses. First instar larvae did not complete development at 18 C. However, within the range 20-30 C, the developmental rate increased with rising temperature. The theoretical lower thermal threshold for development was found to be 16.6 C. Thermal summation and polynomial regression methods were used to predict developmental periods under glasshouse conditions. The predictions were accurate to within a mean of 10% in relation to observed data. Under laboratory conditions, immature survival rates were highest 28 C (52%) and lowest at (and below) 20 C (17%). First instar larvae suffered the highest mortality rates, while pupae had the lowest. Under glasshouse conditions, the survival rates were much lower (9% in the winter months and 20% throughout the remainder of the year), but the species was considered to be a suitable biocontrol agent if mean daily temperatures were maintained at levels above 20 C.  相似文献

The armoured scale insects Acutaspis umbonifera (Newstead), Pinnaspis buxi (Bouché) (Homoptera: Diaspididae) and the soft scale insects Saissetia coffeae (Walker) and Coccus hesperidum L. (Homoptera: Coccidae) were tested as suitable prey for the ladybird Chilocorus nigritus (F.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), with a view to using the beetle as a biological control agent in UK glasshouses. C. nigritus larvae were able to complete development on all prey species tested and adults were also able to mature eggs on P. buxi, S. coffeae and C. hesperidum (A. umbonifera was not tested in this respect). Prey in ornamental glasshouses and interior landscapes are often diverse and patchily distributed. Thus the effect on the beetle larvae of switching between diaspidid and coccid prey was also examined. Larvae were able to switch from feeding on C. hesperidum to Abgrallaspis cyanophylli (Signoret) (Homoptera: Diaspididae) and vice versa with only minor detrimental effects when compared to those beetles reared throughout on one prey species. Introductions of C. nigritus as eggs, rather than adults are indicated for the control of soft scale species.  相似文献

The non-phoretic stages of mites of the genus Hemisarcoptes are predators of the family Diaspididae. The heteromorphic deutonymph (hypopus) maintains a stenoxenic relationship with beetles of the genus Chilocorus. The mites attach to the subelytral surface of the beetle elytron during transport. There is variation in mite density among species of Chilocorus. Both Hemisarcoptes and Chilocorus have been applied to biological control programmes around the world. The objective of this study was to determine whether subelytral ultrastructure (spine density) plays a role in the evolution of symbiosis between the mite and the beetle. The subelytral surfaces of 19 species of Chilocorus and 16 species of Exochomus were examined. Spine density was determined for five subelytral zones: the anterior pronotal margin, medial central region, caudoventral tip, lateral distal margin and epipleural region. Spine density on the subelytral surface of Chilocorus and Exochomus was inversely correlated with the size of the elytron for all zones except the caudoventral tip. This suggests that an increase in body size resulted in a redistribution of spines and not an addition of spines. The pattern of spine density in Exochomus and Chilocorus follows a single size–density trajectory. The pattern of subelytral ultrastructure is not strictly consistent with either beetle phylogeny or beetle allometry. The absence of spines is not correlated with either beetle genus or size and species of either Chilocorus or Exochomus may be devoid of spines in any zone, irrespective of body size. A general difference between species of Chilocorus and Exochomus is the fact that while spine density in Chilocorus is clinal relative to the size gradient, Exochomus is dichotomous and likely to have either many spines or no spines in a particular zone. No species of Chilocorus was completely devoid of spines. Five species of Exochomus had no spines at all, thus making it difficult to interpret the primary function of the subelytral spines in a general way. Within the genus Chilocorus, spine density may play a synergistic role in host association. Based on morphological evidence alone, these findings lead to the hypothesis that the species of Chilocorus that would be most conducive to biological control application in conjunction with Hemisarcoptes would be Chilocorus cacti, Chilocorus distigma, Chilocorus fraternus, Chilocorus orbus, Chilocorus tristis and, to a lesser extent, Chilocorus bipustulatus. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998  相似文献

利用地统计学方法研究了不同时期朝鲜球坚蚧(Didesmococcus Koreanus Borchs)若虫及黑缘红瓢虫(Chilocorus rulidus Hope)幼虫种群的空间分布格局和空间相关性。结果表明,不同时期朝鲜球坚蚧若虫种九和黑缘红瓢虫幼虫种群的半变异函数均可拟合为球型,其空间格局为聚集型,在小尺度上,空间变异主要是由其空间自相关引起的,且不同时期格局变化不明显,变程分别为9.56-15.70m和18.83-19.74m之间。黑缘红瓢虫种群与朝鲜球坚蚧种群之间具有很强的追随关系,说明黑缘红瓢虫种群是朝鲜球坚蚧种群的优势天敌。  相似文献

在实验室条件下,研究孪斑唇瓢虫Chilocorus geminus Zaslavskij成虫对桑白蚧Pseudau lacaspis pentagona(Targioni-Tozzetti)各虫态的捕食功能反应,寻找效应和干扰效应。结果表明,孪斑唇瓢虫成虫对桑白蚧各虫态的功能反应均符合Holling-Ⅱ型圆盘方程。孪斑唇瓢虫成虫对桑白蚧各虫态的寻找效应随自身密度的增加而降低。根据Holling-Ⅲ型功能反应新模型拟合出1头孪斑唇瓢虫成虫对桑白蚧各虫态的最佳寻找密度分别为:成虫26.7头、卵185.2粒、1龄若虫47.9头、2龄若虫46.8头。当孪斑唇瓢虫成虫与桑白蚧各虫态的数量同比例增加时,孪斑唇瓢虫成虫个体间的相互干扰系数为0.3901,0.7891和0.9827;当桑白蚧2龄若虫数量不变而孪斑唇瓢虫成虫数量增加时,孪斑唇瓢虫成虫个体间的相互干扰系数为0.0960。  相似文献

Abstract:  Adalia bipunctata (Linnaeus) is a generalist aphidophagous ladybird having a wide prey range. It exhibits complex polymorphism. We reviewed the information on its general characteristics, polymorphism, sexual activity, foraging behaviour, food range and prey suitability, growth and development, heterospecific interactions including natural enemies, and its biocontrol potential. Although a poor biocontrol agent (only successful against aphid, Dysaphis plantaginea in Switzerland), it was used in the past as a good model to test various hypotheses and models facilitating ecological understanding in insects. In the present review, the empirical data are interpreted and inferences drawn and a checklist of its prey is provided.  相似文献

Developmental and survival rates of the locally important diaspidid pest, Abgrallaspis cyanophylli (Signoret) reared on Solanum tuberosum L . tubers were examined under light and dark conditions; humidities of 33, 53, 62 and 75% relative humidity (RH); varying population densities; constant temperatures in the range of 20 to 30oC and at cycling temperatures of 12 h at 14°C and 12 h at 30°C. Developmental rate was slightly lower under constant light conditions but mortality was higher in the dark, particularly amongst the males. At 26°C, there were no differences in developmental rate in relation to the various humidity levels. However, survival was significantly lower at 33% RH, with females suffering higher mortality than males. Population density was found to have no effect on developmental rate or size of the females. Overall mortality increased in line with population density although the result was poorly correlated. Within the range 20-28°C developmental rate increased with rising temperature but decreased at 30°C. Thermal summation and polynomial regression data show a theoretical lower thermal threshold for development of 12.47°C. The thermal constant was 541.7 degree days. Survival was lowest at 20°C and 30°C and highest at temperatures in the median range and under cycling conditions. Male survival was significantly higher than that of the females at 30°C and under the cycling regime of 14/30°C. The results suggest that the optimum conditions for rearing A. cyanophylli on potatoes would be at temperatures in the range 24-26°C and humidities of 55-65% RH.  相似文献

研究了二双斑唇瓢虫(Chilocorus bijugus Mulsant)对矢尖蚧(Unaspis yanonensis Kuwana)的捕食作用,结果表明,瓢虫雌成虫对矢尖蚧各虫态的功能反应呈Holling II型,瓢虫对矢尖蚧的捕食效应随捕食者个体间干扰作用的增加而下降,捕食作用率(E)随着瓢虫数增加呈幂函数下降曲线,温度对瓢虫的捕食效应具有显著的影响,寻找效率(a)和处置时间(Th)与温度之间呈二次函数关系,猎物密度对瓢虫生殖力的影响呈Logistic曲线。  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the most suitable prey for the development and fecundity of the predatory coccinellid, Chilocorus bipustulatus (L.) on three different diaspidid species: Aspidiotus nerii Bouché, Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell), and Pseudaulacaspis pentagona (Targioni-Tozzetti). Life tables were constructed at constant 25°C and the developmental time, longevity, fecundity, and the sex ratio were determined. Individuals fed with A. nerii displayed the shortest larval and pupal developmental time (26.0 days), lowest immature mortality rate (16.6%), highest net reproduction rate (264.7 females/ female), shortest generation time (72.9 days), and the highest intrinsic rate of increase (0.077 females/female/day). The results showed that under laboratory conditions C. bipustulatus developed best on A. nerii.  相似文献

Summary: Marine sponges often contain diverse and abundant microbial communities, including bacteria, archaea, microalgae, and fungi. In some cases, these microbial associates comprise as much as 40% of the sponge volume and can contribute significantly to host metabolism (e.g., via photosynthesis or nitrogen fixation). We review in detail the diversity of microbes associated with sponges, including extensive 16S rRNA-based phylogenetic analyses which support the previously suggested existence of a sponge-specific microbiota. These analyses provide a suitable vantage point from which to consider the potential evolutionary and ecological ramifications of these widespread, sponge-specific microorganisms. Subsequently, we examine the ecology of sponge-microbe associations, including the establishment and maintenance of these sometimes intimate partnerships, the varied nature of the interactions (ranging from mutualism to host-pathogen relationships), and the broad-scale patterns of symbiont distribution. The ecological and evolutionary importance of sponge-microbe associations is mirrored by their enormous biotechnological potential: marine sponges are among the animal kingdom's most prolific producers of bioactive metabolites, and in at least some cases, the compounds are of microbial rather than sponge origin. We review the status of this important field, outlining the various approaches (e.g., cultivation, cell separation, and metagenomics) which have been employed to access the chemical wealth of sponge-microbe associations.  相似文献

In the last decades, several expeditions were organized in Europe by the researchers of the Hungarian Natural History Museum to collect snails, aquatic insects and soil animals (mites, springtails, nematodes, and earthworms). In this study, scale insect (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) specimens extracted from Hungarian Natural History Museum soil samples (2970 samples in total), all of which were collected using soil and litter sampling devices, and extracted by Berlese funnel, were examined. From these samples, 43 scale insect species (Acanthococcidae 4, Coccidae 2, Micrococcidae 1, Ortheziidae 7, Pseudococcidae 21, Putoidae 1 and Rhizoecidae 7) were found in 16 European countries. In addition, a new species belonging to the family Pseudococcidae, Brevennia larvalis Kaydan, sp. n. and a new species of Ortheziidae, Ortheziola editae Szita & Konczné Benedicty, sp. n. are described and illustrated based on the adult female stage. Revised keys to the adult females of Brevennia and Ortheziola are presented.  相似文献
