White piedra is a superficial mycoses characterized by nodules on the hair shaft, caused by the basidiomycetous yeasts. In the present study, clinical and mycological findings of scalp white piedra caused by Trichosporon spp. are related. Twenty three cases of scalp white piedra were observed with a high incidence in women (87%) and preschool children from 2 to 6 (74%) years old. These groups presented a relationship of dependence with this infection. Despite the low socio-economic status, poor standards of hygiene, (48% of the patients) as well as the fact that 30.4% of the children shared the same nursery, these factors were not significant for the transmission of the mycosis. These were the first reports of scalp white piedra in Jo?o Pessoa city, Paraíba, Brazil.  相似文献

Background

Viewed through the micro focus of an interpretive lens, medical anthropology remains mystified because interpretivist explanations seriously downplay the given context in which individual health seeking-behaviours occur. This paper draws upon both the interpretivist and political economy perspectives to reflect on the ethno medical practices within the Korean-Australian community in Sydney.

Methods

We draw on research data collected between 1995 and 1997 for an earlier study of the use of biomedical and traditional medicine by Korean-Australians in Sydney. A total of 120 interviews were conducted with a range of participants, including biomedical doctors, traditional health professionals, Korean community leaders and Korean migrants representing a range of socio-economic backgrounds and migration patterns.

Results and Discussion

First, the paper highlights the extent to which the social location of migrants in a host society alters or restructures their initial cultural practices they bring with them. Second, taking hanbang medicine in the Korean-Australian community as an illustrative case, the paper explores the transformation of the dominant biomedicine in Australia as a result of the influx of ethnomedicine in the era of global capitalism and global movement.

Conclusion

In seeking to explain the popularity and supply of alternative health care, it is important to go beyond the culture of each kind of health care itself and to take into consideration the changes occurring at societal, national and global levels as well as consequential individual response to the changes. New social conditions influence the choice of health care methods, including herbal/alternative medicine, health foods and what are often called New Age therapies.  相似文献

Background

The use of wild birds, for several purposes, is directly associated with cultural, ecological, and conservation issues. This study aimed to inventory the wild birds known and used in three communities in Paraíba state, northeast Brazil, and to investigate the sociocultural context in which these activities occur.

Methods

A total of 179 people (98 women and 81 men) were interviewed. Data were collected through free interviews, using semi-structured forms, and posing questions about the use of local wild birds. The species were identified by direct observation of the birds, analysis of photographic records, and the use of a scientific guide.

Results

Each species’ use value (UV) was calculated in three different ways: UVgeneral, UVcurrent, and UVpotential. These UVs ranged from 0.01 to 1.15 for UVg, 0 to 0.21 for UVc, and 0.01 to 1.02 for UVp. A total of 99 species, 81 genera, and 40 families were recorded and classified into the use categories of food, breeding, and medicinal. Thraupidae (12 species), Columbidae, Accipitridae, and Icteridae (8 species each) were the most diverse families.

Conclusions

The use of wild birds is a widespread activity in the studied areas, where many species are used. This demonstrates the need to conduct studies to assess the pressure suffered by these bird species, as well as the need to create public policies that intervene in the use and conservation of wild birds.

One of the largest gaps in the knowledge of ectoparasitic flies of the families Nycteribiidae and Streblidae in Brazil is the northeastern region, where most states do not have any record. Here, we present the first records of those two bat fly families for the state of Paraíba. We recorded a total of 10 species of five genera parasitizing eight bat species of four families. Trichobius diphyllae Wenzel (Streblidae) was the most abundant species, found parasitizing Diphylla ecaudata (Phyllostomidae), and T. dugesioides dugesioides Wenzel, the second, found on Trachops cirrhosus (Phyllostomidae). Three species were recorded for the first time in northeastern Brazil and seven species are new for the semi-arid Caatinga. We collected T. galei Wenzel and T. pallidus (Curran) on Natalus macrourus (Natalidae) and Furipterus horrens (Furipteridae), respectively, two endangered bat species, and the species-specific relationship with their hosts points out to some degree of vulnerability. In addition, we present information on host-parasite relationship, and data that extend the known geographic distribution of some species.  相似文献

Given the heterogeneous oceanographic conditions observed in the continental shelf and slope off Rio de Janeiro, the phytoplankton community is expected to adapt to the diverse trophic conditions using distinct strategies. Considering the C-S-R triangle, distinct phytoplankton taxa are expected to occur in Tropical Water (TW), in South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) and in Coastal Water (CW). The study area extends from Paraíba do Sul River mouth to the region of Cabo Frio. Samples were collected on 28 stations, in 2011 austral summer. 209 phytoplankton taxa were observed, mainly dinoflagellates (93), diatoms (71), and coccolitophores (30). TW dominated the surface waters of the continental shelf and slope, and a typical tropical phytoplankton community, composed by stress-tolerant taxa, was observed. The rise in nitrate concentration caused by SACW uplift in the shelf and in the continental slope, at subsurface waters, and in silicate, associated with the Paraíba do Sul riverine plume, led to shifts in the phytoplankton community, increasing the contribution of ruderal taxa. The grouping of phytoplankton assemblages only in traditional groups would result in loss of information about the factors that determine community dynamics since the different species in each of these groups frequently share specific traits.  相似文献

The abundance of microcrustacean species recorded in plankton samples from the littoral and pelagic zones of the Upper Paran River, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, was evaluated in relation to abiotic and biotic environmental factors. The cladocerans Bosminopsis deitersi and Bosmina hagmann i were most abundant. The presence or absence of aquatic macrophytes also influenced abundance and species composition. The true zooplankton species were most abundant at the pelagic stations, while species of Chydoridae and Macrothricidae contributed markedly to microcrustacean abundance and species richness at littoral stations. Species abundance was also strongly affected by water level variation. Microcrustaceans, mainly bosminids, were most abundant during low water. During high water, bosminids decreased in abundance while most other species increased. The higher variation of the environmental factors during high water probably explains the shift in abundance patterns. Changes in water level increased mixing of littoral and pelagic microcrustaceans between sampling stations.  相似文献

The use of improved cytogenetic techniques such as fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) has offered important methodologies for cytotaxonomic and evolutionary studies. In particular, the mapping of 5S rDNA sites has proved to be an excellent marker in the study of different organisms and, more recently, in fish. In the present work, the FISH technique was used to map the 5S rDNA sites in the chromosomes of eight neotropical fish species from the Paraíba do Sul river basin, four of these belonging to the order Characiformes, family Characidae, genus Astyanax (A. scabripinnis, A. parahybae, A. giton and A. intermedius) and four to the order Siluriformes, family Loricariidae (Neoplecostomus microps, Harttia loricariformis, Hypostomus affinis and Upsilodus sp.). Karyotype evolution aspects of the analyzed groups are discussed.  相似文献

Pollutants have adverse effects on human health and on other organisms that inhabitor use water resources. The aim of the present study was to assess the environmentalquality of three watercourses in Monte Carmelo, MG, Brazil, using the micronucleustest on Tradescantia. For each treatment, 15 plants were exposed towater samples for 24 h. The control group was exposed to formaldehyde (0.2%) and thenegative control to Hoagland solution. Subsequently the plants were placed inHoagland solution for 24 h to recover. Cells were stained with 2% acetic carmine andexamined by light microscopy. Three hundred tetrads were analyzed per slide. Thefrequency of genotoxic alterations was expressed as the number of micronuclei per 100tetrads, and the groups were compared by ANOVA. At all sample sites for eachwatercourse significant genotoxicity indices were observed. The results suggest thatin the Mumbuca creek, the current situation of effluent discharge should bereconsidered by the municipal environmental authorities. The increase in micronucleusfrequency denoted for water samples of the Mumbuca creek, Lambari river and Perdizesriver emphasizes the need to adopt environmental vigilance strategies, such asbiological monitoring.  相似文献

We provide the first annotated checklist of ophiuroids from the continental shelf of the State of Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. Identification keys and taxonomic diagnoses for 23 species, belonging to 14 genera and 8 families, are provided. The material is deposited in the Invertebrate Collection Paulo Young, at the Federal University of Paraíba. Ophiopsila hartmeyeri represents the first record for the northeastern region of Brazil, while Ophiolepis impressa, Ophiolepis paucispina, Amphiura stimpsoni, Amphiodia riisei, Ophiactis quinqueradia, Ophiocoma wendtii and Ophionereis olivaceae are new records for the State of Paraíba. The number of species known for the state was increased from 16 to 23, representing approximately 17% of the species known for Brazil and 54% of the species known for northeastern Brazil. The recorded fauna has a large geographical and bathymetrical distribution.  相似文献

Rivers in the Amazonian region have annual water level fluctuations varying from 6 to 20m, and the flooding period ranges from 50 to 270 days between the rising and falling phases. Along the rivers there are many different types of vegetation which are annually flooded. In order to study the variation of the species composition and structure of a forest that is seasonally flooded by a clear water river in Brazilian Amazonia 20km SW of Santarém, Pará State, Brazil, we surveyed three hectares, each divided in ten randomly placed rectangular quadrats (10×50m). The number of species per hectare ranged from 21 to 30. The number of trees varied from 242 to 741. Total basal area ranged from 0.70 to 10.9m2. Leguminosae was the most abundant and dominant family in the three hectares sampled. Couepia paraensis (Chrysobalanaceae), Campsiandra laurifolia (Leguminosae) and Leopoldinia pulchra (Palmae) were the most abundant species in the hectares sampled. Similarity indexes at species level varied from 46 to 60% between the three hectares sampled. The hectares studied have the lowest species richness observed in igapó floodplain forest of the Brazilian Amazonia. This may be correlated with the water type, soil condition and proximity of savanna.  相似文献

The potential use of epilithic diatoms as indicators of organic pollution was evaluated in Gravataí River, RS, (latitude 29°45′–30°12′ S; longitude 50°27′–51°12′ W). The river suffers agricultural impacts in its upper course and urban and industrial organic pollution in its lower course. Epilithic diatoms were sampled eight times from September 2000 to August 2002, at six sites. Species were identified and densities and relative abundances of populations were determined. Simultaneously, physical, chemical and microbiological variables were measured (water temperature, conductivity, turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand, ammonium, organic nitrogen, total nitrogen, ortho-phosphate, total phosphate, chloride and faecal coliforms). In order to interpret the environmental and biological variables, discriminant analysis and the TWINSPAN methods (Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis) were applied. The results indicated that the concentrations of ortho-phosphate, ammonium, total organic nitrogen, BOD5 and faecal coliforms characterized a pollution gradient along the river, where changes in the abundance or species composition were observed. Species were classified into three groups: Group A, including species more tolerant to heavy organic pollution and eutrophication, represented by Luticola goeppertiana, L. mutica, Eolimna subminuscula, Nitzschia palea and Sellaphora pupula; Group B, comprised of tolerant and widely distributed species such as Eunotia bilunaris, Frustulia crassinervia, F. saxonica, Navicula cryptocephala, N. cryptotenella, Nitzschia palea var. tenuirostris, Surirella angusta, Pinnularia microstauron and Ulnaria ulna and Group C, with less pollution tolerant species represented by Eunotia sp. and Gomphonema parvulum.  相似文献

Subsurface samples were taken monthly (March/1993 through February/1994) in the Baía River, a tributary of the right bank of the Paraná River (22° 43 S and 53° 17 W). We analyzed temporal changes in the phytoplankton community in relation to density, biomass, richness and species diversity, equitability, size structure, and dominance. We related these to regional climate and hydrology, and to the physical and chemical variables of the water column. We determined 119 taxa, wich were numerically dominated by the class Chlorophyceae with 37 taxa. The classes Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae contributed the most abundant biomass and were responsible for the two peaks that were observed. The high water period was generally characterized by lower phytoplankton biomass, higher richness and species diversity, and higher density of nannoplanktonic species such as Monoraphidium tortile in March, and Cryptomonas brasiliensis in January. During low water, however, the highest values of phytoplankton biomass were recorded, with heterocytous cyanophytes dominating during the phase of greater stability of the water column, and filamentous diatoms during periods of mixing turbulence. The fluctuations observed indicate that the hydrosedimentological regime of the Paraná River, together with the climatological factors, constitute the main forcing functions acting on the Baía River phytoplankton.  相似文献

The composition and spatial and temporal variation of oligochaete community were analyzed in Patos Lake and Ivinhema River, a tributary of the Paraná River Brazil, during the period March 1993 to February 1994. Lentic and lotic environments were studied, with the objective of analyzing species association and temporal changes in the function of the abiotic variables at nine sites studied. Seventeen species of oligochaetes were identified. Oligochaete association was analyzed by Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) and abiotic variables, by Principal Components Analysis (PCA). This method showed that Aulodrilus pigueti predominated in Patos Lake, probably because it has adapted to mud with high organic matter in low currents. Brinkhurstia americanus predominated at the right bank of the Ivinhema River while Paranadrilus descolei predominated at the left bank. Temporal variation of organism density was influenced by hydrological cycle, and spatial variation was determined by grain size and quantities of organic matter in the sediments.  相似文献

This study was carried out in the Counties of Montenegro and Pareci Novo located in the region of the Vale do Rio Cai, Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil, aiming to determine the fruit fly species of Tephritidae and Lonchaeidae that occur in organic orchards of sweet orange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb.] cultivar Céu, and Murcott tangor (Citrus reticulata Blanco x C. sinensis), during the fruit ripening stages in 2003 and 2004. Eight McPhail traps baited with integral grape juice diluted to 25% were installed in four orchards, two in each citrus species. The traps were checked weekly, when the baits were changed, the flies separated and preserved in 70% ethyl alcohol. Fruits were also sampled from the orchards, placed in containers with damp soil and closed with a mesh. The tephritid flies represented 86.2% of all captured flies in the four orchards during both years. Five Tephritidae species were captured from traps: Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann), Anastrepha grandis (Macquart), Anastrepha pseudoparallela (Loew), Anastrepha dissimilis Stone and Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). The captured species of Lonchaeidae were: Neosilba zadolicha McAlpine & Steyskal, Neosilba n.sp.3, Neosilba sp. and Lonchaea sp. Anastrepha fraterculus was found in 99% of the fruit samples, both in 'Céu' orange and 'Murcott' tangor, and Neosilba n.sp.3 were only obtained from 'Murcott' tangor fruits.  相似文献

The Blue Peacock Bass (Cichla piquiti), native to the Tocantins-Araguaia river basin of the Amazon system, was introduced into the basin of the Paranaíba River, Paraná River system. Cachoeira Dourada reservoir is one of a series of dams on the Paranaíba River in central Brazil, where this fish has become established. A study of its feeding spectrum, combined with information about its reproductive characteristics and population structure, would enable the current state of this species in the reservoir to be assessed and might provide useful data for the management of other species native to this habitat. This study showed that the peacock bass has no predators or natural competitors in the reservoir and that reproduces continuously, with high reproductive rates, and has a smaller median length at first maturity (L50) than other species of Cichla. Its successful establishment in habitats strongly affected by human activity should cause changes in the whole structure of the local fish communities. Nonetheless, in this reservoir, there appears to be some sharing of the functions of this species with native carnivorous fish, a situation that may be sustained by the presence of a wide variety of foraging fish.  相似文献

Synopsis We studied the timing of migratory fish spawning in the last dam-free stretch of the upper Paraná River and in Itaipu Reservoir. Eggs were more common in the Amambai and Ivaï Rivers, while larvae predominated in the Paraná River and in Itaipu Reservoir. Both eggs and larvae were more abundant at night. The highest abundance of eggs was in October and that of larvae in November. Migratory species predominated in the Amambai and Paraná Rivers, and non-migratory species in the Ivaï River and Itaipu Reservoir. The predominance of eggs in the upper and middle portions, and larvae in the lower, infer that there are spawning sites in the former and nurseries in the latter. The high nocturnal abundance of eggs is associated with spawning at sunset and that of larvae with feeding, avoidance of predators and nocturnal disorientation. The presence of tributaries such as the Amambai and Ivaí Rivers in the last dam-free stretch of the Paraná River is extremely important to the maintenance of regional fish diversity and fish stocks in both the Paraná River and Itaipu Reservoir.  相似文献

Mean biomass (153-1) and production (P) of fish in two small tributaries of the Paraná River (Paraná, Brazil) were 61 kg ha–1 and 48 kg ha–1 yr–1 in the Caracu River and 29 kg ha–1 and 26 kg ha–1 yr–1 in the Agua do Rancho River, respectively. Matrix correlation analysis revealed high positive correlations of both 153-2 and P to maximum depth and hiding places and, at a lower level of significance, to mean depth, pH and oxygen level. Lower 153-3 and P values were found in the Agua do Rancho River, whose valley has retained a more natural character, rich canopy and scarcity of macrophytes, but also lower conductivity and nitrogen and phosphate levels than those in the Caracu River.Address for correspondence  相似文献

Rumors of Aedes aegypti (L.) resistance to temephos in diferent Brazilian states justified this research, whose objective was to verify and characterize the resistance to temephos in A. aegypti populations from Paraíba State. The temephos resistance was evaluated and characterized through a diagnostic dose of 0.012 mg/l and concentration-mortality curves. The mortality data of multiple concentrations were submitted to Probit analysis, and the resistance ratios (RR) were figured out from the CL50s of the survived population and CL50 a laboratory susceptible population. All the A. aegypti populations showed resistance to temephos. The Sítio Piabas population with RR = 4.0, showed lower resistance, the Campina Grande with RR = 6.0, Lagoa do Mato with RR = 9.3 and Capim de Cheiro with RR = 9.0, showed a moderate resistance, and Boqueir?o with RR = 11.0, Brejo dos Santos with RR = 16.6 and Itaporanga with RR= 15.6, showed intermediate levels of resistance to temephos. These results confirm the need of a continuous monitoring and managing program of A. aegypti resistance in Paraíba State.  相似文献

In reservoirs of the Upper Paraná River Basin, Brazil Paraguay, phytoplankton biomass is generally low relative to reservoirs in other parts of the world. To investigate what might be limiting phytoplankton biomass in the Upper Paraná reservoirs, we used an empirical approach wherein climatic conditions in the basin as well as chemical, hydrological and morphometrical characteristics of 13 reservoirs, were compared against those prevailing in 58 reservoirs of the south-central United States. In both regions, phytoplankton biomass was correlated with chemical, hydrological and morphometrical characteristics of the reservoirs. There were no differences in phosphorus concentrations between the two regions, nitrogen levels were higher in the Upper Paraná, ionic concentrations were higher in the south-central United States and there were major differences in all physical characteristics considered. In reservoirs of the south-central United States, hydraulic retention time increased and discharges decreased during the post-spawning period allowing increases in phytoplankton biomass; in the Upper Paraná River Basin, discharges peaked during the post-spawning period, delaying the peak of phytoplankton blooms until after completion of the post-spawning period. Our comparison between the two sets of reservoirs suggests that hydrologic regimes dictate differences in phytoplankton biomass and that hydrology of the Upper Paraná River Basin, exacerbated by climatic patterns, deter phytoplankton production despite suitable levels of essential nutrients.  相似文献

Samples of fishes were collected quarterly at three reaches in the Água Nanci stream, upper Paraná River basin, Brazil: near the spring, in the middle course, and near the mouth. Richness and evenness of the fish fauna increased between reaches towards the river mouth showing a correlation with stream width, pH and the presence of riparian vegetation. These variations in species richness and evenness, verified through Principal Component Analysis and Pearson correlation, suggest relations to habitat complexity, especially characterized by both the degree of preservation of dense riparian vegetation and high width at the lower reaches of the stream, providing a wide variety of hiding places for fish. Abundant species showed correlations with some environmental factors, suggesting habitat preferences.  相似文献
