The risk of predation generally entails alterations in prey behaviour or morphology, but only a few organisms, such as caddisfly larvae, are able to undergo rapid morphological changes mediated by behaviour. Here I explore whether predatory fish (Squalius pyrenaicus) and crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) provoke similar responses from caddisfly larvae (Calamoceras marsupus) in terms of the speed of case construction and the use of different materials differing in their protective value (sticks > leaves; tough leaves > soft leaves). Laboratory experiments demonstrated that C. marsupus larvae were able to recognise both types of predators, and responded to them by constructing a case within hours. Moreover, predation risk motivated the use of more protective materials for case construction when compared to controls. The response to the crayfish was faster than that to the fish, which could be related to differences in the nature and predation efficiency of different predators (i.e. crayfish may be more efficient at predating on leaf litter-dwelling invertebrates than fish, which live in the water column). This study provides novel evidence about the expression of morphological defences mediated by behavioural responses to predation risk, and demonstrates that the speed of case construction and its resulting protection level can vary depending on predator nature.  相似文献

Data on the biology and morphological characters of the larva and pupa of Lipsothrix nobilis Loew, 1873 are given for the first time. The diagnostic characters for the genus Lipsothrix Loew and the species L. errans (Walker) are specified. The larvae differ in the structure of the frontal plate, coloration of the stigmal area, and structure of the hypostomium. The pupae differ in the shape of cuticular structures of the abdominal segments and structure of the spiracles and terminal dents. Abstract

The adult male and female of Xenochironomus canterburyensis (Freeman) are redescribed, and the larva and pupa are described for the first time. The immature stages are obligate, inquiline commensals of the freshwater mussel Hyridella menziesi (Gray) inhabiting the littoral zone of some New Zealand lakes. The labral setae of the larva are modified to form an elongate feeding brush, and the pupa lacks a posterolateral spur on the eighth abdominal segment. X. canterburyensis appears to be closer to X. xenolabis in certain synapomorphic features and in that both are closely associated with a host species.  相似文献

Manduca sexta molts several times as a larva (caterpillar) before becoming a pupa and then an adult moth. Each molt culminates in ecdysis behavior, during which the old cuticle is shed. Prior to each larval ecdysis, the old cuticle is loosened by pre-ecdysis behavior, which includes rhythmic, synchronous compressions of the abdomen. A previous study indicated that motor neuron activity during pre-ecdysis compression behavior is driven by an ascending neural pathway from the terminal abdominal ganglion. The present study describes a pair of interneurons, designated IN-402, that are located in the terminal ganglion and belong to the ascending pathway. Each IN-402 is synchronously active with pre-ecdysis compression motor bursts, and bilaterally excites compression motor neurons throughout the abdominal nerve cord via apparently monosynaptic connections. The pair of IN-402s appears to be the sole source of rhythmic synaptic drive to the motor neurons during the pre-ecdysis compression motor pattern. As a result of investigations over type material from a collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest, a new synonym and two new combinations in the Torymidae family (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) are proposed: Eridontomerus illiesi Szelényi, 1981 as a junior synonym of Cryptopristus caliginosus (Walker, 1833); Eridontomerus unidentatus Szelényi, 1973 is transferred to the genus Pseudotorymus Masi, 1921; and Idiomacromerus obscuripennis (Szelényi, 1973) is transferred to the genus Torymoides Walker, 1871.  相似文献

Diagnostic morphological characters of the juvenile Panchaetothripinae in New Zealand are illustrated. Keys developed enable colonies with only immature stages to be identified without needing to rear adults. Live larvae or larvae in ethanol are distinguished by the presence of expanded tips of body setae (Parthenothrips dracaenae), the absence of setae at the abdomen tip (Hercinothrips bicinctus), setae at abdomen tip not longer than abdominal tip width (Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis) and abdominal tip setae longer than abdominal tip width (Sigmothrips aotearoana, endemic species). The presence or absence of spine-like setae on abdominal segments 9 and 10, and the number and length of setae on the wing buds, enable identification of pupae. Abdominal spine-like setae were on the prepupa and pupa of H. bicinctus and S. aotearoana, species that pupate off the plant, and are probably defensive structures. This is the first record of spine-like setae on segment 10 of terebrantian pupae.  相似文献

Chitins and chitosans are some of the most abundant natural polysaccharide materials, and are used to increase innate immune response and disease resistance in humans and animals. In this work, chitin and chitosan from housefly, Musca domestica, pupa shells were obtained by treatment with HCl and NaOH. For chitin extraction, 2 N HCl and 1.25 N NaOH solutions were used to achieve decalcification and deproteinization, respectively. For chitosan extraction, 50% NaOH solution was used to achieve deacetylation. The yields of chitin and chitosan from pupa shells of M. domestica were 8.02% and 5.87%, respectively. The deacetylations of chitosan (from chitin C1 and C2) were 89.76% and 92.39%, respectively, after the first alkali treatment with 50% NaOH (w/w) solution at 105 °C for 3 h and 5 h, respectively. The viscosities of the chitosans (from chitin C1 and C2) were 33.6 and 19.2 cP, respectively.  相似文献

 During the pupal moult the suspended prepupa of the butterfly Inachis io completely removes its larval skin (exuvia) from the body. In doing this, the attachment to a silken pad has to be transferred from the anal prolegs of the prepupa to the cremaster of the pupa without losing the hold at any time. Falling is prevented by a short safety band which is drawn off from the innermost layer of the exuvia as it adheres to two prominent, pupal projections when the exuvia is slipped backwards. The projections which lie on the ventral side of the last abdominal segment are covered with numerous, minute spines each orientated in the opposite direction to the removal of the exuvia. The transparent safety band has a gelatinous consistency and is strong enough to withstand the fivefold load of a pupa. By contrast, the prepupa of Pieris brassicae is additionally held in place during moult by a girdle around the back. It usually rests in an upright position. Nevertheless, the pupa also shows the prominent projections covered with spines. The exuvia is held fast by the projections, but only a fold is formed. The formation of a safety band is never observed. The connection of the exuvia to the projections is sufficient to hold the tip of the abdomen within reach of the pad for hooking the cremaster therein. However, the pupae of those species in Satyrinae which pupate lying in cocoons or cells lack any kind of projections as well as spines. Accepted: 21 January 1998  相似文献

 Morphological differences in body shape of two sympatric benthophagous cichlid species from Lake Malawi, Ctenopharynx pictus and an undescribed species, Otopharynx sp. “heterodon nankhumba,” were investigated using geometric morphometric methods. From digitized data of landmark points on lateral profiles of fishes, the shape of each species was compared by the thin-plate spline method. Statistical analyses revealed significant variation in both uniform and nonuniform components of shape between the two species. From the splines generated, it was revealed that most of the significant variation between the two species occurs in the head region. Specifically, C. pictus has a longer and deeper head than Otopharynx sp. In addition, the mouth of C. pictus is larger than that of Otopharynx sp. In the trunk region, C. pictus has a shorter abdominal cavity, which may indicate possession of shorter intestines than Otopharynx sp. The variation in gross head morphology and intestinal length may reflect interspecific differences in trophic ecology, possibly facilitating the coexistence of the two species through resource partitioning.  相似文献

The early pupal heart of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has recently been the subject of intense physiological and molecular work, yet it has not been well described, nor has it been compared with the heart of the adult fly. In the work reported here, the hearts of adults and early pupae of D. melanogaster were studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy and by light microscopy. The hearts of adults and early pupae both consist of a tube of circular striated muscle one cell in thickness. The alary muscles, which suspend the heart, are more delicate in the adult compared to the early pupa. The pericardial cells in both early pupae and adults are connected to the heart by connective tissue radiating from the alary muscles or dorsal diaphragm. We confirm that four major changes occur in the heart during metamorphosis: 1) a conical chamber is formed de novo in the first and second abdominal segments; 2) the adult heart curves to conform to the contour of the abdomen; 3) a layer of longitudinal striated muscle appears on the ventral surface of the heart; 4) a fourth pair of ostia is added to the three already present in the early pupa; and note additionally that 5) the ostia appear as simple openings in the heart of the early pupa but are valve‐like in the adult. Summary 1) When a thermal gradient (20–40° C) was established along a laboratory nest, Camponotus mus nurse workers showed a photoperiodic circadian rhythm of temperature preferences for brood rearing. Two different temperatures were daily selected to translocate the brood, i.e. 30.8° C selected at the middle of the photophase, and 27.5° C selected during the scotophase, 8 h later. 2) The daily temperature response of nurse workers consisted of paired high and low-temperature translocations, with a 8 hs-interval in between: high-temperature translocation was shown to be entrained by the photophase length, whereas low-temperature translocation was shown to be dependent on the precedent one. 3) Prey deprivation to the colony modified the brood transport behaviors resulting in translocations of only cocoons and large (ripe) larvae, stages in which the pupation processes are triggered. Small larvae and eggs remained located at 27.5° C. 4) Evaluation of pupa developmental time as well as percentage of pupa mortality at different temperature regimes allowed to construct an efficiency index relating pupa survival and cocoon developmental time. In the range of temperatures selected by nurses, the index reached its maximal values. 5) The ecological significance of these results is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The dragonfly nymph Mesogomphus lineatus satiated predating 21 larvae of Culex fatigans in 50 minutes; number of attack and predatory efficiency decreased precipitously from 2 attacks/min and 70% during the first 10 minutes of feeding to 0.04 attack/min and 0.01% efficiency respectively during the sixth 10 minutes interval. The nymphs fed after 6, 12, 18, 24, 36 or 42 hours of deprivation consumed 4, 13, 15, 20, 21 or 21 larvae; apparently, the maximum appetite is returned after about 36 hours of deprivation. Satiation time, which was 50 minutes at the density of 15 larvae/aquarium, decreased to 30 minutes in aquaria containing 200 larvae. The nymphs predated increased the number of prey when they were exposed to higher densities of C. fatigans and Anopheles stephansi larvae, and pupa of C. fatigans. They consumed equal weight (but different number) of Culex and Anopheles larvae at all the tested prey densities and selectively selected Culex larva over the pupa or Anopheles larva. Comparative analyses suggest that the dragonfly nymphs deserve serious consideration as larvivorous predators.  相似文献

The fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea Drury, is an economically important introduced pest in China. A native pupal endoparasitoid, Chouioia cunea Yang (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae, Tetrastichinae) causes considerable mortality of H. cunea pupae in some areas of China. Alternative hosts of C. cunea were tested to find potential substitute hosts for mass rearing the parasitoid. Antheraea pernyi Guerin-Meneville (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) was chosen as a surrogate host as a single pupa produced an average of 6552 wasps and a maximum of 11,256 per pupa. A mass-rearing technique and successful release program of this parasitoid is described. Parasitism by C. cunea in the areas where it was released averaged 67.74% and was usually over 80%. Other native parasitoids, such as Coccygomimus disparis (Viereck), C. parnasae (Viereck) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) and Exorita japonica Townes (Diptera: Tachnidae), caused the total average parasitism to exceed 90% on average, reaching a maximum of 96.28% in the release areas. These successful releases indicate that an introduced pest species can also be controlled by the mass-rearing and release of native parasitoids in the country of introduction.  相似文献
