Clonal fragments of the stoloniferous herb Glechoma longituba were subjected to a complementary patchiness of light and soil nutrients including two spatially homogeneous treatments (SR–SR and IP–IP) and two spatially heterogeneous treatments (IP–SR and SR–IP). SR and IP indicate patches (shaded, rich) with low light intensity (shaded, S), high nutrient availability (rich, R) and patches (illuminated, poor) with high light intensity (illuminated, I) and low nutrient availability (poor, P), respectively. Plasticity of the species in root–shoot ratio, fitness-related traits (biomass, number of ramets and dry weight per ramet) and clonal morphological traits (length and specific length of stolon internodes, area and specific area of laminae, length and specific length of petioles) were experimentally examined. The aim is to understand adaptation of G. longituba to the environment with reciprocal patches of light and soil nutrients by plasticities both in root–shoot ratio and in (clonal) morphology. Our experiment revealed performance of the clonal fragments growing from patches with high light intensity and low soil nutrient availability into the adjacent opposite patches was increased in terms of the fitness-related characters. R/S ratio and clonal morphology were plastic. Meanwhile, the capture of light resource from the light-rich patches was enhanced while the capture of soil nutrients from either the nutrient-rich or the nutrient-poor patches was not. Analysis of cost and benefit disclosed positive effects of clonal integration on biomass production of ramets in the patches with low light intensity and high soil nutrient availability. These results suggest an existence of reciprocal translocation of assimilates and nutrients between the interconnected ramets. The reinforced performance of the clonal fragments seems to be related with specialization of clonal morphology in the species.  相似文献

Summary This experiment investigated the effect of parental nutrient shortage on the allocation of five nutrients to seeds and rhizomes in Sorghum halepense, a perennial, noxious weed, and to seeds in Sorghum bicolor, an annual, cultivated species. Plants from both species were grown from seeds and supplied with fertilizer at three concentrations. The allocation of biomass and nutrients (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) to reproductive and vegetative parts was determined. Relative biomass allocation to reproduction (either sexual or vegetative) remained constant in S. halepense in spite of large differences in total plant weight. In S. bicolor, however, biomass allocation to sexual reproductive structures decreased significantly with decreasing nutrient supply. Individual seed weight was not modified by parental nutrient supply in S. halepense, but it increased with decreasing nutrient availability in S. bicolor. Important differences in mineral allocation to seeds were found between the two species. While S. bicolor seeds were largely buffered from the differences in parental nutrient status, concentration of nutrients in S. halepense seeds decreased significantly with decreasing supply for all the nutrients analyzed except Ca. However, mineral nutrient concentration in S. halepense rhizomes remained remarkably constant despite differences in the external supply, evincing the priority given to vegetative reproduction at the expense of sexual reproduction. Overall, the pattern of nutrient allocation in S. bicolor seeds under different nutrient supply resembled the pattern observed in S. halepense rhizomes, but it had little resemblance to the pattern of nutrient allocation in S. halepense seeds. The results are discussed in terms of differences and similarities in the reproductive strategy of these two species.  相似文献

Actaea spicata and Geranium sylvaticum are deciduous rosette herbs, frequently coexisting in nutrient-rich forests of boreal Sweden. A. spicata is restricted to this habitat whereas G. sylvaticum has a wider ecological amplitude. To explore the different distributions of these species we studied the growth mechanisms by which they responded to nutrient and light supply. Plants raised from seeds were grown under four combinations of light and nutrient supplies and growth was followed for 20 weeks. Growth responses were measured as biomass accumulation and meristem activity, i.e. leaf development by shoot meristems. Biomass accumulation and meristem activity were affected by nutrient and light treatments. However, A. spicata responded more to nutrients, whereas G. sylvaticum responded more to light, and low resource supply shortened the time during which shoot meristems of A. spicata developed leaves without a corresponding effect on biomass accumulation. In G. sylvaticum, the periods of leaf development and biomass accumulation were the same, but a relationship between high development rates and peak allocation of biomass to shoot meristems indicated a storage function of these during leaf development. We conclude that the inflexible growth of A. spicata, mainly affected by nutrient supply, makes it less competitive in open habitats and restricts it to shaded, nutrient-rich habitats. G. sylvaticum should be more successful in habitats subjected to unpredictable disturbances, due to a flexible growth morphology and a dynamic function of meristems that buffers against variation in nutrient supply and facilitates positive light responses. Meristematic data should be included in interspecific comparisons on growth responses to different resource supplies. Unless species have the same growth mechanism, it is not satisfactory to study biomass-related traits alone, as internal constraints concerning plant development might confuse the interpretation.  相似文献

Habitat productivity and vegetation biomass are important factors affecting species diversity and ecosystem function, but factors determining productivity are still insufficiently known, especially in the forest herb layer. These factors are difficult to identify because different methods often yield different results. We sampled the herb layer biomass and assessed soil nutrients, moisture and light availability in 100 m2 plots in Czech oak forests. Habitat productivity was estimated independently from nutrient content in the soil, herb layer biomass and using a bioassay experiment (growing phytometer plants of Raphanus sativus under standardised conditions in soil samples taken from forest plots). The generalised linear model for herb layer biomass showed it to increase with light, soil phosphorus and moisture availability, but only 10.7% of its variation was explained by these factors. The phytometer biomass increased mainly with soil pH and phosphorus availability; together with soil C/N ratio these factors explained 56.1% of the phytometer biomass variability. Combined evidence based on different approaches indicates that canopy shading and soil phosphorus tend to be the most important factors influencing the herb layer productivity of the studied oak forests.  相似文献

An evergreen oak species, Cyclobalanopsis multinervis, and a deciduous oak species, Quercus aliena var. acuteserrata were grown from acorns under two light levels (full sunlight and shade at about 18 % of full sunlight, simulating the light intensities in forest clearings and gaps, respectively) for one growing season. Three hypotheses were tested: (i) the deciduous species grows faster than the evergreen species in forest gaps and clearings; (ii) the deciduous species responds more strongly in terms of growth and morphology to variation in light climate than the evergreen species; and (iii) seedling size is positively correlated to acorn size. The results showed: (i) at both light levels, the deciduous seedlings gained significantly more growth in biomass and height than the evergreen seedlings; (ii) both species produced significantly more biomass in full sunlight than in shade, without showing any significant difference in height between treatments. Increase in light intensity improved the growth of the deciduous seedlings more strongly; (iii) at a similar age, the deciduous seedlings showed a greater response in leaf morphology and biomass allocation to variation in light levels, but when compared at a similar size, biomass allocation patterns did not differ significantly between species; (iv) bigger acorns tended to produce larger seedlings, larger leaf sizes and more leaf area, between and within species. These differences demonstrate that the deciduous species is gap-dependent and has the advantage over the evergreen species in forest gaps and clearings.  相似文献

Leymus chinensis (Trin.) Tzvelev and Phragmites communis Trin. are co-dominant grasses in both nutrient-poor and rich steppes in the Songnen Plains of northeastern China. A replacement series experiment was conducted along a five-level nutrient gradient to test for changes in the competitive relationships of the species with nutrient availability. There were significant effects of nutrient level and species proportion on mean plant height, biomass and rhizome length. Facilitation was found in these plant attributes for both species when grown in mixture compared with monoculture, especially at high nutrient levels. For example, L. chinensis grew taller and intercepted more light when in mixture. The aboveground dominance of P. communis did not decrease in mixture, possibly because it benefited from belowground interactions with L. chinensis. Biomass allocation was apparently influenced by both above and belowground competition. For example, L. chinensis allocated much more biomass to shoots and less to roots when neighbor number was increased, suggesting that aboveground competition occurred. Root: shoot ratios of L. chinensis in monoculture decreased gradually with increasing nutrient availability, whereas the ratio in mixture declined rapidly, implying intense competition for light at high levels. Our results support the hypothesis that nutrient competition is more important than light competition when soil nutrients are scarce. Although the interactions between these species benefit both, P. communis is more likely to displace L. chinensis at high nutrient availability.  相似文献

A greenhouse mesocosm experiment, representing earthworm-free North American Acer-dominated forest floor and soil conditions, was used to examine the individual and combined effects of initial invasion by three European earthworm species (Dendrobaena octaedra, Lumbricus rubellus and Lumbricus terrestris) on the forest floor and upper soil horizons, N and P availability, and the mortality and biomass of four native understory plant species (Acer saccharum, Aquilegia canadensis, Aralia racemosa, and Carex pensylvanica). All the three earthworm species combined caused larger impacts on most variables measured than any single earthworm species. These included loss of O horizon mass, decreased thickness of the O horizon and increased thickness of the A horizon, and higher availability of N and P. The latter finding differs from field reports where nutrients were less available after invasion, and probably represents an initial transient increase in nutrient supply as earthworms consume and incorporate the O horizon into the A horizon. Earthworms also increased mortality of plants and decreased total mesocosm plant biomass, but here the impact of all the three earthworm species was no greater than that of L. terrestris and/or L. rubellus alone. This study corroborates field studies that European earthworm invasions alter North American forest ecosystem processes by initiating a cascade of impacts on plant community composition and soil properties.  相似文献

Bioassays of nutrient limitation in a tropical rain forest soil   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary Six speices of shrubs and one large herb with contrasting life history patterns were used as bioassays of nutrient availability in a Costa Rican lowland rain forest soil. Growth responses of the herb (Phytolacca rivinoides, Phytolaccaceae) confirmed soil measurements indicating high availability of N and potentially limiting levels of P, K, Mg and Ca. Growth responses of the shrub species (Miconia spp., Melastomataceae and Piper spp., Piperaceae) to a complete nutrient fertilizer were generally less than that of Phytolacca. Lack of a strong shrub response to +P fertilization is probably due to mycorrhizal associations and slower growth rates of woody species. In general, increased growth did not occur at the expense of phenolic production in the leaves. The results emphasize that assessment of specific nutrient limitations to plant growth vary depending on species selected for the bioassay, even among species from the same community.

Soil nutrient-level and herbivory are predicted to have opposing effects on the allocation pattern of the competitive dominant plant species. Lower stem and higher leaf allocation are favoured when plants are grazed, whereas a higher stem allocation is favoured at high nutrient levels. Grazing by hares and geese can prevent invasion of the tall Elymus athericus, into short vegetation of Festuca rubra, at unproductive stages of salt-marsh succession but not at more productive stages. We hypothesise that the negative effect of herbivory on Elymus decreases due to increasing soil nitrogen levels and shifts the competitive balance towards this species. We tested how simulated grazing and nitrogen availability affected the competitive balance between adult plants of both grass species in a greenhouse experiment. Elymus had a higher above-ground biomass production, invested relatively more in stem and root tissue and had a larger shoot length than Festuca. The above-ground relative yield of Elymus in mixtures of both species increased with increasing nitrogen levels. This indicates that Elymus was the superior competitor at high soil fertility. Although clipping removed relatively more biomass from Elymus than from Festuca and exceeded the observed biomass removal in field conditions, it did not change the competitive balance between both species. Decreasing effects of herbivory due to increasing nitrogen levels are not a likely explanation for the invasion of Elymus in productive marshes. The results suggest that once Elymus has established it can easily invade vegetation dominated by Festuca irrespective of grazing by herbivores such as hares and geese. Herbivory by small herbivores may mainly retard the invasion of this plant by influencing establishment itself.  相似文献

Resource sharing in heterogeneous environments has been shown to increase growth and survival of clonal plants. In addition, plants in harsh climates have been suggested to have higher levels of resource sharing than plants in milder climates. We experimentally investigated the level of resource sharing in plants from garden and forest habitats from two regions with contrasting climates. The clonal herb Aegopodium podagraria reaches its northern distribution limit in central Sweden. South of that it grows in both patchy and dynamic light climate, as a natural component of deciduous forest, as well as in more homogeneous light climates as a garden weed. Since heterogeneity and habitat harshness have both been suggested to increase resource sharing, we hypothesized (1) integration and sharing of resources to be higher in plants from forest than in plants from garden habitats and (2) integration and sharing of resources to be higher in plants from the northern region that encounter a harsher climate than in plants from the southern region. Clonal fragments of A. podagraria were collected and multiplied in the greenhouse. Ramet pairs were then planted in adjacent pots, with one ramet shaded. Rhizome connection was either left intact or severed to prevent resources sharing. Plants from forest habitats were more negatively affected by the severance treatment than plants from garden habitats. Although region alone had no significant effect on biomass, the interaction between rhizome severing, shading and regional origin was close to significance. We conclude that A. podagraria from forests are more dependent on resource sharing than those from gardens. These results concur with previous studies that suggest that local adaptation for different degrees of resource sharing can occur in clonal plants.  相似文献

Integrating conservation goals with the sustainable use of tropical rain forests has received much attention in recent decades. Amomum villosum, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, has been cultivated in the understory of seasonal rain forest for 40 years in Xishuangbanna, Southwest China. Cultivated area has reached 58.11 km2 much of which is distributed within nature reserves. This practice has caused controversy on whether A. villosum cultivation would alter the structure and function of the primary forest. This study examined the effects of medicinal plant cultivation on seasonal rain forest by comparing plant diversity, biomass, litterfall and soil nutrients of primary rain forest with disturbed areas where A. villosum is cultivated. The results indicate that plant diversity, tree biomass, litter production and soil nutrients are significantly lower in the disturbed than in the primary rain forest. These results suggest that the cultivation of A. villosum affects the structure and function of the seasonal rain forest in Xishuangbanna.  相似文献

Opening of the forest canopy may result in higher fitness of understory plants due to increased light intensity on the forest soil and increased nutrient availability. Especially, tuberous orchids may profit from increased light as photosynthetic assimilation products and nutrients are accumulated in their belowground storage organs. We investigated the effects of coppicing on demographic structure and fruit and seed set in 15 populations of the tuberous, perennial orchid Orchis mascula, seven of which were located in undisturbed, shaded woodland and eight in recently coppiced woodland. Coppicing resulted in a massive increase in flowering and in increased fruit set. On average, 42.9% of all individuals consisted of flowering plants in coppiced woodland, whereas in undisturbed woodland only 20.8% of all individuals flowered. The percentage fruit set varied between 20% and 55% in coppiced woodland and was strongly related to population size (measured as the number of flowering individuals). Mean fruit weight and fruit size were also significantly higher in populations located in coppiced woodland than in undisturbed woodland, whereas the proportion of viable seeds was not related to woodland type. Given that O. mascula is dependent on seed set to fill space with new individuals, these results suggest that the long-term survival of this species strongly depends on frequent opening of the canopy.  相似文献

Phlorotannins, C-based defence compounds in brown seaweeds, show a high degree of spatial and temporal variation within seaweed species. One important model explaining this variation is the Carbon Nutrient Balance Model (CNBM), which states that the relative supply of carbon and limiting nutrients will determine the level of defence compounds in plants. Nitrogen is often considered to be the limiting nutrient for marine macroalgal growth and the CNBM thus predicts that when the carbon:nitrogen ratio is high, photosynthetically fixed carbon will be allocated to production of phlorotannins. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of light (i.e. carbon) and nitrogen on the phlorotannin content of two intertidal brown seaweeds, Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus. This was done in an observational field study, as well as in a manipulative experiment where plants from habitats with different light regimes were subjected to different nitrogen and light treatments, and their phlorotannin content was measured after 14 days. The results showed that there was a negative relationship between tissue nitrogen and phlorotannin content in natural populations of F. vesiculosus, but not in A. nodosum. In the short term, the phlorotannin content in both algal species was not affected by changes in nitrogen availability. Exposure to sunlight had a positive effect on the phlorotannin content in natural populations of both algal species but, in the manipulative experiment, only F. vesiculosus showed a rapid response to changes in light intensities. Plants subjected to sunlight contained higher phlorotannin content than shaded plants. In conclusion, the results imply that nitrogen availability explains some of the natural variation in the phlorotannin content of F. vesiculosus, but the light environment has greater importance than nitrogen availability in predicting the phlorotannin content of each species.  相似文献

Summary The accumulation of nutrients by seedlings ofEucalyptus grandis andE. saligna from a latosol and two other fertile soils was compared. Both species performed well in a calcareous soil and an acidic but fertile gallery forest soil but not in the dystrophic latosol.E. grandis accumulated more nutrients from the calcareous soil thanE. saligna. In the other two soils these two species showed similar growth and nutrient accumulation. In spite of the high acidity, manganese toxicity did not seem to be a limiting factor in the latosol or the gallerty forest soil. Correlations among the shoot concentrations were not always the same as those among the total contents of the nutrients in the aerial biomass.  相似文献

Forest fragmentation alters plant-animal interactions, including herbivory. Relying manipulative experiments, we test if the reduction in insect herbivory associated with forest fragmentation translates into increased seedling growth and survival of three tree common species (Aristotelia chilensis, Cryptocarya alba and Persea lingue) in forest fragments and continuous forests in coastal Maulino forest, central Chile. Furthermore, we test if after protecting seedlings from herbivorous insects, plant performance is increased regardless of forest fragmentation. Nursery grown seedlings were transplanted into four forest fragments and a continuous forest during 2002. Insects, important herbivores in this forest, were excluded from half the seedlings by repeated applications of insecticides. Compared to continuous forests, in forest fragments, herbivory was reduced in all three species, seedling growth was greater in A. chilensis and C. alba but not in P. lingue, and survivorship was unaffected by herbivory or fragmentation in all three species. Protecting seedlings from insects reduced herbivory in the continuous forest to similar levels attained in the forest fragments. No change in herbivory results from by protecting seedlings in forest fragments. These results confirm that insects are important herbivores in the Maulino forest and also support the hypothesis that fragmentation can have strong indirect effects on plant communities as mediated through trophic interactions.  相似文献

Root production and root turnover in two dominant species of wet heathlands   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Summary Root biomass production, root length production and root turnover of Erica tetralix and Molinia caerulea were estimated by sequential core sampling and by observations in permanent minirhizotrons in the field. Root biomass production, estimated by core sampling, was 370 (Erica) and 1080 (Molinia) g m-2 yr-1. This was for both species equal to aboveground production. Assuming steady-state conditions for the root system, root biomass turnover rates (yr-1), estimated by core sampling, were 1.72 (Erica) and 1.27 (Molinia). Root length production of both species, estimated by minirhizotron observations, varied significantly with observation depth. Root length turnover rate (yr-1) of both species did not vary significantly with observation depth and averaged 0.92 in Erica and 2.28 in Molinia. Reasons are given for the discrepancy between the results of the two types of turnover measurements. The data suggest that the replacement of Erica by Molinia in a wet heathland, which occurs when nutrient availability increases, leads to an increased flow of carbon and nutrients into the soil-system. Therefore, there may be a positive feedback between dominance of Molinia and nutrient availability.  相似文献

Summary In a phytotron study of the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus supply ratio on nutrient uptake and use by Larrea tridentata, seedlings responded to increases in N and P availability with increases in leaf size, total biomass, and leaf nutrient concentration, and with decreases in root: shoot ratio. N and P use efficiency decreased with increasing N and P availability, respectively, but increased with increasing availability of the other nutrient, suggesting that Larrea responds both to the absolute and to the relative availability of limiting nutrients. Absolute amounts of N and P resorption, as well as N and P resorption efficiencies did not demonstrate a significant trend with nutrient availability, and there was no evidence of significant interactions between the two nutrients. More studies of the effects of nutrient interactions in the cycling and use of nutrients by different plant species are needed before more general conclusions can be drawn.  相似文献

Summary Growth of the broad-leaved graminoid Milium effusum, occurring in shady deciduous forests, was matched with periods of high light influx through the tree canopy in spring and autumn. Fertile shoots grew faster than sterile shoots. Leaves on flowering shoots were fully developed when the budbreak started on the trees, whereas nonflowering shoots had fully developed leaves when the tree canopy closed. Leaf concentrations of N and P were high (6.1 and 0.74% respectively) in spring but decreased as the leaves expanded. Maximum pool sizes of N and P in whole tillers were reached about one month after the onset of spring growth, whereas maximum spring pools of K, Mg, and Ca were timed with peak biomass about one month later. The leaves lost nutrients during summer when no growth took place. Since leaching losses were negligible, nutrients were probably allocated from the leaves to support root growth. Autumn reallocation to winter stores was low. The pattern of growth and nutrient use suggests that light availability, i.e., the resource in relatively lowest supply, regulates the investment of the resource in highest supply, i.e., nutrients. This is consistent with previously reported observations on Eriophorum vaginatum, a graminoid of low nutrient — high light environments. This species utilizes nutrients efficiently at the expense of less efficient acquisition of carbon. We suggest that selection for efficient utilization of the resource in lowest relative supply has been a strong driving force behind the physiological adaptation of both species to their environments.  相似文献
