Recent research using fungi as models provide new insight into the ability of regulatory networks to generate cellular states that are sufficiently stable to be faithfully transmitted to daughter cells, thereby generating epigenetic inheritance. Such protein-based inheritance is driven by infectious factors endowed with properties usually displayed by prions. We emphasize the contribution of regulatory networks to the emerging properties displayed by cells.  相似文献

There has been minimal theoretical exploration of the role of epigenetic variation in the response to natural selection. Using a population genetic model, I derive formulae that characterize the response of epigenetic variation to selection over multiple generations. Unlike genetic models in which mutation rates are assumed to be low relative to the strength of selection, the response to selection decays quickly due to a rapid lowering of parent-offspring epiallelic correlation. This effect is separate from the slowing response caused by a reduction in epigenetic variation. These results suggest that epigenetic variation may be less responsive to natural selection than is genetic variation, even in cases where levels of heritability appear similar.  相似文献

Previous studies on the inheritance of aposporous apomixis in bahiagrass showed a wide range of segregation ratios in crosses involving sexual and aposporous apomictic plants. The F1 progenies were classified through a visual progeny test carried out on few F2 plants. The number of sexual F1s highly exceeded the apomictics leading to the conclusion that apomixis was controlled by a few recessive genes. The present study examines the inheritance of apospory in bahiagrass. A sexual plant was self-pollinated and crossed with an aposporous apomictic plant as pollen donor. Backcross and F2 progenies were obtained in several combinations. All self-pollinated sexual plants or sexual x sexual crosses produced progenies free of apospory. All crosses involving a sexual and an apomictic plant produced approximately three times more apospory-free plants than plants with apospory. Bahiagrass is of autotetraploid origin and hence is expected to display tetrasomic inheritance. The most widely accepted genetic model for inheritance of apospory in tropical grasses is a single dominant gene with tetrasomic inheritance. In the present experiments none of the apospory-free F1s segregated for the apospory trait indicating that it is most likely a dominant character. However, the observed results fit better a modified model: tetrasomic inheritance of a single dominant gene with pleiotropic effect and incomplete penetrance. The excess of apospory-free plants in the F1 progeny could be ascribed to some distortion in the segregation pattern due to a pleiotropic lethal effect of the dominant A allele with incomplete penetrance. Alternatively, partial lethality of factors linked to aposporous gene may account for segregation distortion against apospory.  相似文献

The inheritance of plant height was investigated in a ten-parent diallel cross of diverse rice cultivars. Parents included two tall japonica lines and eight semidwarf lines. Data from parent, F1, F2 , and F3 generations indicated that the majority of height variation among the ten parents could be accounted for by three major genes with additive loci effects. D51, 72/2234–11, and G33 (derived from the known major-gene indica semidwarf Dee-geo-woo-gen) all were found to possess an allelic, partially recessive semidwarfing gene (sd1). Additional semidwarfing genes were detected in D66 (sd2, fully recessive) and in CI 9858 (sd3, partially to fully recessive). Relative magnitudes of additive effects were sd1 > sd2sd3. Hokuriki 76, Tedoriwase, and IV 29–4 were found to be dwarfed by a multiple-gene system. Hayman-Jinks diallel cross analysis on parent and F1 information (1974 and 1975) and on parent and F2 information demonstrated the presence of significant additive and dominance variation, but epistasis was not detected. A preponderance of dominant alleles with partial dominance for increased plant height was observed. Since diallel statistics reflect properties of genes with larger effects, the genetic model proposed from segregation analysis was in substantial agreement with predictions of the Hayman-Jinks analysis.  相似文献

Doolittle (Biol Philos 28(2):351–378, 2013) and Ereshefsky and Pedroso (Proc Natl Acad Sci 112:10126–10132, 2013) argue that selection can act at the level of biofilms and other microbial communities. Clarke (Biol Philos 191–212, 2016) is skeptical and argues that selection acts on microbial cells rather than microbial communities. Her main criticism is that biofilms lack one of the ingredients required for selection to operate: heritability.
