Synopsis Sharp declines in catches prompted a detailed study of the commercially and culturally important terubok Tenualosa toli, which lives in the fast-flowing, turbid estuaries and adjacent shallow coastal waters of Sarawak. Its reproduction, diet, age and growth were investigated. An absence of small females and large males, together with histological data showing transitional gonads, suggest that T. toli is a protandrous hermaphrodite. Ageing based on otoliths indicates that individuals may not live more than about two years. Male fish spawn towards the end of their first year, change sex (transitional gonads were recorded in fish from 14 to 31 cm SL) and spawn as females in their second year. Spawning takes place in the middle reaches of estuaries and females deposit all their eggs at once. Fecundity is linearly related to fish length but shows significant seasonal and site variations. Hermaphroditism is discussed in relation to possible environmental and isolating mechanisms. T. toli is a zooplanktivore eating mainly calanoid copepods. Laser-ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectroscopy of trace elements across otoliths revealed that the species does not move into full seawater or freshwater, but completes its life cycle in estuarine and adjacent coastal waters. Therefore T. toli populations in each estuary and adjacent coastal waters may be relatively isolated from one another, and hence particularly susceptible to overfishing.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships for three mangrove fish species, Setipinna melanochir (Bleeker, 1849), Ilisha elongata (Anonymous [Bennett], 1830), and Nibea soldado (Lacépède, 1802) were determined. Samplings were conducted in a tropical mangrove estuary, Sarawak, Malaysia (3°59′25.76′′N; 113°43′51.6′′E) at the peak of three different seasons using gillnets (100 × 2.5 m, mesh sizes 1, 2 and 4 inches) during 2014–2015. No information regarding length–weight relationships of these species was reported previously in FishBase.  相似文献

In this study the diet of Stellifer rastrifer and S. brasiliensis were analysed in order to assess the role of resource partitioning between these congeneric, sympatric and abundant species along the coasts of Paraná (25 °55′28″S; 48 °33′35″W) and Santa Catarina (26 °25′55″S; 48 °34′46″W), in southern Brazil. The stomach contents of 240 S. rastrifer specimens (52–195 mm total length) and 167 S. brasiliensis (60–182 mm total length) collected by trawl boat in March of 2006, were analysed to assess the influence of sites, day and night periods as well as the size class in their diet composition. Although crustaceans have been the main resources of both species, S. rastrifer consumed pelagic and epibenthic items, whereas S. brasiliensis also used benthic resources. Results of permanova analysis provided significant evidence for food resource partitioning and confirm the role of feeding changes in the function of morphology (species, P = 0.001), behaviour (day and night, P = 0.024), and ontogeny (size classes, P = 0.001), strategies to reduce competition and to maintain the coexistence of these syntopic species.  相似文献

The Asian paddle crab, Charybdis japonica, native to the northwest Pacific, is an invasive species that has established populations within northeastern New Zealand. Here, we provide a detailed examination of C. japonica's reproductive seasonality and gametogenesis, sizes at physiological maturity, and sex ratios outside its native range. Trapping in the Weiti River Estuary, Whangaparoa (36°38.4′S, 174°43.6′E) from February 2010 to May 2012 indicated a male‐biased population. Reproductive seasonality largely depended on female condition, since males contained ripe spermatozoa year‐round. Female gametogenesis began during late autumn, with oocyte development occurring throughout winter to early spring. Based on the presence of mature gametes during late winter and the appearance of gravid females in early November, mating began during early spring, with spawning in mid‐spring. Spawning coincided with a large drop in the gonad index, and occurred between sea surface temperatures of 17–22°C and 11.75–13.5 h day length. Females remained reproductive for up to 5 months of the year. Histological observation suggested that CW50 (the carapace width at which 50% of the population is mature) for females was 46.39 mm, while CW50 for males could not be determined due to a paucity of immature males. Histological analysis also suggested that females of C. japonica could produce store sperm and multiple broods annually.  相似文献

The diet of the milk shark, Rhizoprionodon acutus, from the Senegalese coast (12°30′N–14°45′N) was investigated in 3600 specimens with total lengths ranging from 44 to 113 cm for females and from 45 to 110 cm for males. Conducted from May 2010 to April 2011, the study revealed that of the 3600 stomachs examined, 577 contained food (16.03%). Cumulative prey diversity curves reached a stable level at 175 stomachs and thus the sample size was large enough to describe the overall milk shark diet. Relevant differences in the diet were found between sexes, maturity stages, sampling seasons and locations. The milk shark diet was composed of teleosts, crustaceans, mollucs, nematodes, annelids, and unidentified invertebrates. R. acutus seemed to have a preference for teleosts (98.75% in terms of IRI). The trophic level of milk shark calculated in this study was 4.2.  相似文献

This investigation prepares the length–weight relationships (LWRs) of two fish species, including Alburnoides nicolausi (Bogutskaya & Coad, 2009) and Alburnus zagrosensis (Coad, 2009) from Houzian River (latitude 33°22′15.20″ to 33°21′31.57″N; longitude 49°44′39.66″ to 49°44′17.67″E), Lorestan province, Iran. Fish specimens were collected monthly using seine net with 5 mm (Stretched) mesh size between April to September 2017. The LWRs for fish species were W = 0.0059L3.405 (male) and W = 0.0053L3.494 (female) for A. nicolausi, W = 0.0035L3.341 (male) and W = 0.003L3.387 (female) for A. zagrosensis, respectively. The highest value of r2 was .931 for male of A. zagrosensis and lowest value was .964 for male of A. nicolausi.  相似文献

This study provides length–weight relationships (LWRs) for three flatfish species: Cynoglossus bilineatus (Lacepède, 1802), Solea elongata (Day, 1877), and Pseudorhombus elevatus (Ogilby, 1912) from Motaf fishing grounds (latitude 27°00′ to 28°03′N; longitude 51°41′ to 52°11′E), Bushehr province, Iran. A total of 103 fish specimens were collected using shrimp trawler with 40 mm (stretched mesh size) at depths of 10–30 m between August and September 2017. The LWRs for fish species were W = 0.0019L3.353 for C. bilineatus: W = 0.0093L3.174 for S. elongata, and W = 0.006L3.181 for P. elevatus, respectively.  相似文献

Length‐weight relationships were determined for four fish species [Acentrogobius viridipunctatus (Valenciennes, 1837); Acentrogobius caninus (Valenciennes, 1837); Glossogobius olivaceus (Temminck & Schlegel, 1845); and Lutjanus ophuysenii (Bleeker, 1860)] belonging to two families. Samples were collected from 2002 to 2010 by cage net (50 × 15 × 15 cm, mesh size 0.5 cm) from Zhanjiang mangrove in China (20°36′N; 110°54′E). The total length ranged is between 2.3 and 18.1 cm and weighted between 0.3 and 90.2 g. The allometric coefficient (b) of length‐weight relationship varied from 2.72 for Zenarchopterus buffonis to 3.48 for Acentrogobius viridipunctatus. Length‐weight relationships for these four fish species were determined for the first time.  相似文献

The dusky flathead (Platycephalus fuscus) is an important teleost harvested by recreational and commercial fishers throughout its endemic distribution along eastern Australia. This study indicates that the species has an extended spawning period throughout the austral summer, with females in spawning condition occurring in lower estuarine and coastal waters. Total length (L50) and age (A50) at which 50% (±1 SE) of the population was mature was 31.72 (±1.08) cm TL and 1.22 (±0.44) years for males and 56.75 (±0.60) cm TL and 4.55 (±0.13) years for females. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters differed significantly between sexes; females grew faster and attained a greater maximum TL and age than males. The largest female was 98.5 cm TL (7.5 kg), and the oldest 16 years, whereas the largest male was 61.5 cm TL (1.58 kg) and 11 years of age. A tag‐and‐release study identified the exchange of sub‐adult and mature‐sized individuals among estuaries. Determinations of length‐based management regulations for the species are compounded by the large gender‐based differences in growth and length‐at‐maturity. Current minimum legal lengths of 30–40 cm TL protect approximately 3–9% of the female spawning population. Alternative management options, including harvest slot sizes, need to be investigated and tested.  相似文献

The present study provides length–weight relationship (LWR) of three fish species, Cynoglossus puncticeps (Richardson, 1846), Cynoglossus lingua Hamilton, 1822 and Cynoglossus lida (Bleeker, 1851) of family Cynoglossidae from Chilika lagoon (19°28′–19°54′N; 85°05′–85°38′E), India. A total of 147 specimens were sampled during March, July and October of 2017 from screen barrier nets (mesh 14 mm to 26 mm) locally called khonda jal operated by local fishermen. The estimated b values derived from the data sets as follows: 3.12 for C. puncticeps, 3.09 for C. lida, and 2.88 for C. lingua.  相似文献

The study presents length‐weight relationships (LWRs) and length‐lenght relationships (LLRs) for two freshwater fish species from the Cheshmeh‐Langan River (Iran; 32°50′N, 50°04′E), a part of the Tigris drainage basin. Fish were sampled by electrofishing (Samus 725M) in August and September 2017. The LWRs and LLRs obtained showed a high level of correlation (r2 > .98).  相似文献

Knowledge of the main reproductive parameters of a species is fundamental for comprehension of the reproductive behavior of a species within its habitat. To evaluate the reproductive biology of curimbatá, Prochilodus argenteus, an important species for commercial fisheries of the São Francisco River basin, Brazil, 153 females and 174 males were captured during 1999–2000 in the São Francisco River. The females (maximum total length 71.2 cm and maximum weight 7.8 kg) were larger than the males (65.0 cm and 4.3 kg). The weight–length ratio indicated isometric growth for females (b = 3.15) and for males (b = 3.04). Prochilodus argenteus presented total spawning from October to January. Increase in rainfall was the main triggering factor for reproduction, showing a positive correlation with the gonadosomatic index (r = 0.84 females; r = 0.95 males). Size at gonadal maturation of females and males was 31.0 and 25.5 cm, respectively. This study provides information to aid in future implementation of captive breeding and management practices that intend to reduce the ongoing depletion of natural stocks.  相似文献

Length‐weight and length‐length relationships were investigated for 13 freshwater fish species from the lower Jinsha River, southwest China (from 101°32′49.63″E; 26°35′38.27″N to 104°37′48.14″E; 28°45′59.55″N). Fish were sampled from five sites during 2014 and 2016, using trap‐nets, gillnets (major mesh size: 2–6 cm), longline and electrofishing. Length‐weight relationships for six and length‐length relationships for 12 species are the first report to FishBase, respectively. Moreover, new maximum length for 11 species are also presented to FishBase in this study. All regressions were highly significant (< .001), with the coefficient of determination r> .950. These information will be helpful for management and conservation in local fishes and fisheries.  相似文献

Hook selectivity, sex ratio of catches and relative abundance (Catch Per Unit Effort – CPUE) were assessed for the pelagic stingray Pteroplatytrygon violacea (Bonaparte, 1872), caught by longline gear in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean over the continental slope and adjacent oceanic area. The catches were carried out at depths of 200–4000 m by research cruises in 2002 and 2003, from Cabo Frio (22°52′S) to Laguna (28°28′S); and by hook selectivity experiments from 2004 to 2008, from Itajaí (26°54′S) to Tramandaí (29°59′S). Hook selectivity experiments indicated higher catches of stingrays with ‘J’ hooks (9/0, 10° offset) commonly used by the pelagic longline fleet than with ‘circle’ hooks (18/0, 10° offset). ‘circle’ hooks reduce the longline by‐catches of this species. Most of the stingrays caught were males (6 : 1). One female aborted mid‐term embryos at the time of capture. CPUE was highest between spring and autumn and lowest during winter.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships were determined for three fish species (Cynoglossus macrolepidotus (Bleeker, 1851), Liparis tanakae (Gilbert & Burke, 1912), Zoarces elongatus (Kner, 1868)) from Bohai Sea (38°38′–40°28′N; 119°42′–121°10′E), China. Fish specimens were sampled monthly between May 1982 to May 1983 using pair bottom trawlers (150.5 × 96.5 m, mesh size: 30–200 mm) with a cod end (mesh size: 30 mm), which were towed at a ship's speed of two knots for 1 hr at a maximum depth of about 80 m. The reproductive biology of the guitarfish Rhinobatos percellens was studied from 751 specimens caught by bottom pair trawlers off the coast of São Paulo, Brazil, between c. 24° 00′ S; 45° 15′ W and c. 25° 10′ S; 47° 52′ W, from September 2007 to August 2009. The total length (LT) and total mass (MT) relationship for males and females combined was MT = 1·29E‐06 LT3·15 (r = 0·99, n = 751). The mean LT of sexually mature specimens was 548 mm for males and 583 mm for females. Clasper growth was allometric and showed three distinct phases. Most claspers were calcified in specimens of c. 550 mm LT. The mean diameter of the largest oocyte was 29·8 mm, the mean ovarian fecundity was seven oocytes and ovulation occurred between August and November. Uterine fecundity ranged from two to 13 embryos (mean of five embryos). Larger females had higher litter sizes and larger embryos; the size‐at‐birth was c. 200 mm LT. The hepato‐somatic index oscillated seasonally for males and females; the gonado‐somatic index had little variation in males, but varied seasonally in females. The presence of many non‐pregnant adult females and of encapsulated eggs during two consecutive seasons suggests a resting period between gestations and the possibility of diapause.  相似文献

The study presents length–weight relationships (LWRs) and length–length relationships (LLRs) for three algae‐scraper species; Capoeta coadi from the Kouhrang River (Iran; 32°23′N, 50°08′E) a part of the Tigris drainage basin, Capoeta pyragyi from Cheshmeh Langan River (32°55′N, 50°10′E) a part of Zayanderud River basin and Capoeta umbla from Chooman River (35°57′N, 45°47′E). Fish were sampled by electro fishing (Samus1000; Power Out: 200 watts) in August, September and October 2017. Sampling was carried out each months in sites covering an area of about 100 m2 including runs, riffles and pools at a water depth of 10–60 cm. Length–weight relationship (LWR) was estimated for 12 elasmobranch species; five shark species, four species of rays and three species of guitar fishes from north‐eastern Arabian Sea, India. Five major landing centres of Maharashtra were selected; Satpati (Lat. 19°43′15″N, Long. 72°42′00″E), Naigaon (Lat. 19°19′32″N, Long. 72°48′54″E), Versova (Lat. 19°08′33″N, Long. 72°48′11″E), New ferry Wharf (Lat. 18°57′29″N Long. 72°51′01″E) and Sassoon dock (Lat. 18°54′42″N, Long. 72°49′33″E). Samples were collected fortnightly during August 2016 to October 2017 from various gears; drift gill nets (Hung length 114–143 m and #100–270 mm) off Satpati coast at 35–50 m depth, dol nets (length 50–65 m and cod end # 30–69 mm) in Naigaon at 38–50 m depth and trawl (length 33–72 m and cod end # 17–32 mm) in Versova, New ferry Wharf and Sassoon dock operated at 20–50 m depth. Multiday fishing was carried out with 2–3 fishing trips in a month, each trip with duration of 7–13 days. Soaking time of gill net and dol net varied from 4 to 8 hr while each trawl haul lasted for 3–4 hr. Length–weight/Disc‐width‐weight relationship showed good fit with r2 values varying from 0.818 to 0.999. In addition to information on LWR, new maximum size for three species of elasmobranchs is reported in this paper.  相似文献

Samples of Paralonchurus brasiliensis Steindachner, 1875 (627 females; no males) were taken monthly from June 1997 to May 1998 at the fishing pier of Cidreira – Rio Grande do Sul (30°08′S; 50°11′W) in southern Brazil. The fish were captured by sport fishermen using different sizes of hook‐and‐line. The reproductive period of P. brasiliensis extends from August to March, presenting greater activity from October to February. Females reach first maturation at 15.4 cm total length (TL). Of the 466 scales analyzed, one to six annuli were found. Growth annuli are formed between June and August, corresponding to the winter period (southern hemisphere), with the first visible annulus being formed when the fish are 1.5 years old. The length growth curve for P. brasiliensis females is described as: Lt = 20.0 (1 ? e?0.564×t), TL in centimeters and age in years. The undersize asymptotic length may be a result of excessive fishing mortality on the studied population.  相似文献

Present study provides length–weight relationships (LWRs) and length–length relationships (LLRs) of eight fish species from river Ganga, India. Specimens were sampled from gill nets (mesh, 22–120 mm), cast nets (mesh, 12–14 mm), and seine nets (mesh, 12 mm) on quarterly basis from September 2016 to September 2017 within the river stretch from Buxar (25°33′43.90″N and 83°56′3.10″E) to Freserganj (21°35′40.58″N and 88°15′28.92″E). The b value ranged from 2.86 (Otolithoides pama) to 3.08 (Polynemus paradiseus), whereas a value ranged from 0.004 (P. paradiseus) to 0.016 (Rita rita). Both relationships (LWRs and LLRs) were found to be highly correlated (p < .001). This study provides first report on LWR for Amblyceps mangois and Osteobrama cotio, whereas new maximum length recorded for Macrognathus pancalus. Furthermore, the estimate of R. rita should be considered as tentative because of the limited size range in the study.  相似文献
