Plasma levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin associated with parental behavior were measured in the Antarctic winter breeding emperor penguin, Aptenodytes forsteri. Males exclusively incubate the egg while females exclusively brood the nonhomeothermic young; both sexes alternate in rearing the homeothermic young. Birds were sampled on arrival from the sea through egg laying, incubation, and brooding. All parent birds lost their chicks at the end of the brooding period due to harsh weather but sampling continued. In females, LH titers dropped after egg laying but levels were restored when the birds returned from the sea to brood the chicks and were not depressed by high prolactin levels. Plasma prolactin remained low in males captured on arrival and kept until the free-living males finished incubation. In breeders, prolactin secretion increased during the prelaying period when day length decreased. Prolactin levels stayed elevated in males during incubation and in brooding females returning after a 2-month absence at sea. Prolactin values were higher in brooding females than in males ending incubation or returning in late brooding. These levels did not drop after chick loss, and the sexual difference in prolactin values was maintained after breeding failure. In emperor penguins, increased prolactin secretion appears to be triggered around the time of egg laying and continues, driven by an endogenous mechanism, through incubation and brooding until rearing is completed. Prolactin secretion independent of external stimuli may have evolved in pelagic seabirds to maintain parental care despite long absences at sea from the breeding colony.  相似文献

Passive immunization of incubating ring doves with daily injections of sheep anti-chicken vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (cVIP) serum prevented the proliferation of crop sac tissue observed in control doves given nonimmune serum. Daily injections of anti-cVIP serum did not prevent crop sac development in nonbreeding doves simultaneously treated with ovine prolactin. The concentrations of plasma prolactin were significantly depressed in birds given anti-cVIP serum although this effect became progressively less pronounced during the course of the 7- or 14-day treatment periods. Body weights and weights of regressed reproductive organs were unaffected by treatment with anti-cVIP serum and did not differ significantly from control birds. Doves showing a decreased prolactin response to anti-cVIP serum treatment developed an immune response to sheep serum which may have immunoneutralized the administered antibody. Concentrations of plasma LH were not consistently affected by anti-cVIP serum administration and were low throughout the study. The depression in plasma LH normally seen in females after their young hatch was not observed in females treated with anti-cVIP serum. No effect of treatment was observed upon the birds' incubation behavior or in their readiness to feed and brood their young. These results suggest that in the ring dove, VIP is the physiological prolactin-releasing factor responsible for stimulating prolactin secretion and consequently the development of the crop sac, during incubation. They further indicate that increased concentrations of plasma prolactin may not be essential for gonadal regression or the maintenance of full incubation and brooding behavior in ring doves under laboratory conditions.  相似文献

Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) males and females, nesting in Antarctica, alternate attendance at the nest with absences of many days to forage at sea. We investigated the importance of tactile input from egg and chicks on prolactin levels by observing nest attendance patterns and obtaining blood samples (1) during the first nest exchange of the incubation stage, (2) from birds whose incubation period was artificially increased or decreased by about 10 days, and (3) from birds whose nests had failed. Prolactin levels in females after 8 to 11 days of absence from the breeding colony did not differ from those in incubating males and did not change after females resumed incubation. Moving eggs between nests resulted in nests in which chicks hatched after about 26, 36 (normal), or 46 days. Duration of incubation did not affect prolactin levels in the parents measured during incubation, at the pip stage, hatch stage, or early brood stage. Adults first left their chicks unguarded on about the same calendar date, regardless of chick age. However, chicks from long incubation nests averaged 8 days younger when they were left unguarded than chicks from control or short-incubation nests. In females, there was no effect of nest failure on prolactin levels. In males, prolactin levels were slightly lower after nest failure than in males tending nests. Testosterone was significantly higher in males after nest failure than in males still tending nests. Prolactin is elevated in Adélie penguins as part of the program of cyclical hormonal changes that accompany the lengthy reproductive season and is relatively independent of tactile input. Sustained prolactin secretion is probably required for the maintenance of parental behavior in offshore feeding species that must be absent from the nest for many days at a time.  相似文献

Plasma levels of prolactin and FSH in free-living Pied flycatchers were studied in relation to breeding stage, clutch size and diurnal variations. In the female, the concentration of prolactin started to increase during the egg-laying and reached maximal values at the end of the incubation period. After hatching prolactin levels decreased. Male Pied flycatchers showed an increase in plasma levels of prolactin at the time when they returned to their home-territories, i.e. at the end of the incubation period. Males still occupying secondary territories at this time had low levels of prolactin. In the males, as in the females, plasma levels of prolactin decreased after hatching.
Male Pied flycatchers showed at all times higher plasma levels of FSH than did females. In both sexes FSH levels were high during the early part of the breeding season and started to decrease after the egg-laying period. After hatching time plasma levels of FSH were below the sensitivity of the assay. No differences in FSH were found between males occupying secondary territories and males in home-territories.
In incubating females FSH, but not prolactin, showed a distinct unimodal daily cycle.
No differences were found in plasma levels of prolactin and FSH between females incubating different sized clutches.  相似文献

In facultative polygynous birds with biparental care, a trade-off may occur between male parental care and attraction of additional mates. If there is a cost associated with reduced male parental care, the relative benefit of mate attraction may be predicted to decrease as the size of a male's clutch or brood increases. We tested this prediction in monogamous pairs of facultatively polygynous European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris). The larger the clutch, the more time the male spent incubating and the less time he spent attracting an additional female (i.e. singing near and carrying green nesting material into adjacent empty nest-boxes). Reduced paternal incubation resulted in lower overall incubation (the female did not compensate) and lower hatching success. Immediately after experimental reduction of clutches, males spent significantly less time incubating and more time singing and carrying greenery, and vice versa for experimentally enlarged clutches. Males with experimentally reduced clutches attracted a second female more often than males with experimentally enlarged clutches. This is the first study, to our knowledge, to provide experimental evidence for an adjustment of paternal care and male mate-attraction effort to clutch size. However, a trade-off between paternal nestling provisioning and mate attraction was not revealed, probably due to the absence of unpaired females by that time in the breeding season. Experiments showed that the relative contribution of the male and female to nestling provisioning was unrelated to brood size.  相似文献

Ring doves with increased plasma prolactin and low plasma LH (Group A) or with low plasma prolactin and low plasma LH (Group B) which had been incubating sterile eggs for 12 or 18 days, respectively, had their nests and eggs removed for 3 days. Upon nest return, observations were made on the birds' readiness to renest and on changes in plasma prolactin and LH. Birds from Group A demonstrated a far greater tendency to resume incubation than birds from Group B. Nest deprivation resulted in a sharp fall in the concentration of plasma prolactin in birds which were deprived of their nests after 12 days of incubation (Group A). Following resumption of incubation no subsequent increase in the prolactin levels was observed in Group A or B. The concentration of plasma LH rose sharply after nest deprivation in both sexes of both groups and declined after return of the nests. Birds in Groups A and B which returned to their nests laid a new clutch of eggs while continuing to incubate. The total length of uninterrupted sitting following nest return was 20.9 +/- 0.48 days (n = 8). These results suggest that (1) once the mechanism responsible for the increase in plasma prolactin during incubation is disrupted, it cannot be reactivated unless the whole reproductive cycle is repeated. (2) The inhibition of LH secretion during incubation involves neural mechanisms which do not necessarily involve the anti-gonadotrophic action of prolactin.  相似文献

To determine what role pituitary responsiveness plays in the suppression of gonadotropin level during incubation in the turkey, the ability of the pituitary to release luteinizing hormone (LH) in response to luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) was compared in incubating, laying, and photorefractory birds. In all three groups, the i.m. injection of LHRH (4 micrograms/kg) increased serum LH levels; however, the LH response was markedly enhanced in the incubating turkeys as compared with the laying (6.6-fold increase over preinjection levels vs. 1.9-fold; p less than 0.05) or the photorefractory birds (9.7-fold vs. 3.1-fold; p less than 0.05). The LHRH-induced LH release was also determined in turkeys as they shifted from the laying to the incubating phase of the reproductive cycle. This response increased (p less than 0.05) in magnitude as the birds started to incubate. The high prolactin level of incubating turkeys does not have a depressing effect on LHRH-stimulated LH release; thus, impaired LH response to LHRH is not a mechanism involved in the diminished gonadotropin secretion of incubating turkeys.  相似文献

The effects of a brief exposure to newly hatched squabs upon the concentrations of plasma prolactin and LH secretion and length of incubation time in ring doves were investigated using a novel experimental procedure. After 5 days of incubation birds were deprived of their nests for 3 days. On return to their nests, the birds immediately resumed incubation and laid a second clutch of eggs after 5 days at which time the first clutch was removed. A consequence of this procedure was that at the time of hatching, concentrations of plasma prolactin had passed their peaks and were falling to baseline values, while concentrations of plasma LH were beginning to increase. This experimental manipulation made it possible to demonstrate that brief exposure to newly hatched squabs significantly affects the concentration of plasma prolactin, an effect which was more pronounced in females than in males. This increased secretion of prolactin was associated with a reduction of plasma LH which reached significance in females but not in males. Birds exposed to squabs spent a significantly longer period of time on their nests as compared to those birds not exposed to squabs. This observation is consistent with a role for prolactin in maintaining readiness to incubate.  相似文献

The turnovers of hypothalamic 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT), dopamine (DA) and noradrenaline (NE) were measured in male and female ring doves (Streptopelia risoria) at three stages of the breeding cycle: courtship, 3 days after pairing; early incubation, 1–2 days after egg laying; and brooding, 1–3 days after the squabs had hatched.2. In both sexes plasma LH decreased progressively from courtship through incubation to brooding young. Crop sacs were fully developed in doves brooding young but not at other stages of the reproductive cycle, indicating increased concentrations of plasma prolactin.3. The turnovers of 5HT and DA in both sexes were significantly higher (P<0.001) in doves brooding young than in birds incubating eggs or nest building. The turnover of DA was higher in females than in males at the onset of incubation. The turnover of NE was lower (P > 0.01) in females at the onset of incubation than during courtship or brooding.4. Increased turnover of hypothalamic DA may be more closely related to brooding behaviour than to changes in prolactin or LH secretion.5. Increased hypothalamic 5HT turnover in brooding doves appears to be more directly related to crop sac development, and by inference increased prolactin secretion, than to depressed plasma LH concentrations.  相似文献

Background

Although there is growing evidence that birds may have individual chemical profiles that can function in several social contexts, offspring recognition based on olfactory cues has never been explored. This ability should be more likely evolved in colonial birds and/or species suffering brood parasitism, in which the risk of being engaged in costly misdirected parental care is high.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We performed a choice experiment to examine whether females of the spotless starling, Sturnus unicolor, a species that is colonial, and where a fraction of the population is exposed to intraspecific brood parasitism, can discriminate between the scent of their offspring and that of unrelated nestlings. We also explored whether the development of the uropygial gland secretion may play a role in such olfactory discrimination by performing the choice experiments to females rearing nestlings of two different ages, that is, without and with developed uropygial glands. Results showed that female starlings did not preferentially choose the scent of their offspring, independently of whether the gland of nestlings was developed or not.

Conclusions/Significance

Our results suggest that female starlings do not have or do not show the ability to distinguish their offspring based on olfaction, at least up to 12–14 days of nestling age. Further research is needed to examine whether odour-based discrimination may function when fledgling starlings leave the nest and the risk of costly misidentification is likely to increase.  相似文献

Stress during early development can induce substantial long‐term effects in organisms. In the case of birds, despite growth compensations, nestlings reared under harsh conditions typically show reduced survival chances in adulthood. It has been proposed that environmental early‐life stressors could affect longevity via effects on telomere length, possibly mediated through oxidative stress. However, the link between these processes is not clear. In this study, we experimentally manipulated brood size in spotless starlings (Sturnus unicolor) to test the causal relationship between early stress, oxidative and corticosterone‐mediated stress and telomere shortening. Our results show that experimentally enlarged brood sizes led to a reduction in morphometric development on nestlings, the effect being stronger for females than males. Additionally, basal corticosterone levels increased with increasing brood size in female nestlings. Neither plasma antioxidant status nor malondialdehyde levels (a marker of lipid peroxidation) were affected by experimental brood size, although the levels of a key intracellular antioxidant (glutathione) decreased with increasing brood size. We found that the treatment showed a quadratic effect on nestling telomere lengths: these were shortened either by increases or by decreases in the original brood size. Our study provides experimental evidence for a link between developmental stress and telomere length, but does not support a direct causal link of this reduction with corticosterone or oxidative stress. We suggest that future studies should focus on how telomere length responds to additional markers of allostatic load.  相似文献

The reproductive endocrinology of the Wandering Albatross Diomedea exulans was studied at South Georgia to investigate the potential endocrine correlates of biennial breeding and of the acquisition of sexual maturity. Gonads of breeding birds and of known-age immature birds of both sexes were examined by laparoscopy throughout the period that they were at the nest site. Blood samples, subsequently analysed to determine concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin, progesterone, testosterone and oestradiol-17/i, were obtained from samples of breeding birds of both sexes at regular intervals from first arrival until the chicks fledged nearly a year later. Before laying in December, breeding birds had mature testes and ovarian follicles and high concentrations of LH, prolactin and sex steroids. Gonadal regression and a rapid drop in hormone levels (except for LH in females) occurred in early incubation (January). Testes (and follicles to a lesser extent) enlarged in mid-incubation, coinciding with high levels of LH and increases in prolactin and testosterone. Gonads finally regressed completely near hatching time. LH, prolactin and testosterone remained at low levels throughout chick rearing (April to November), but females had several periods of active progesterone and oestradiol secretion, and progesterone was detectable in males only late in the chick-rearing period. Although some changes in hormone levels are difficult to explain, the patterns are fairly typical of temperate birds. The persistence of progesterone secretion in both female breeders and non-breeding ‘immature’ birds is viewed as part of a mechanism inhibiting an ovary from becoming vitellogenic. Although testis size and testosterone concentrations increased with age in immature males (of ages 4–10 years), birds of 5 years and older are probably physiologically mature, even though breeding does not start until they are 7 years of age and only half an age group has bred by an age of 11 years. Immature females (of age 4–7 years) had undeveloped follicles, very low oestradiol concentrations but high progesterone levels, providing further support for the role of this hormone in inhibiting gonadotropin secretion. The condition of the female is therefore probably decisive in determining when a pair first attempts to breed but it is unknown what factors initiate normal ovarian development.  相似文献

Contents of mRNAs encoding LHbeta-, FSHbeta-, TSHbeta- and common a-subunit precursor molecules were measured in male Japanese quail deprived of food for three days. Plasma LH, FSH, thyroxine and triiodothyronine levels were also measured in the same birds. Plasma LH levels declined during the period of food deprivation. Levels in starved birds were not different from those in control birds after one day of starvation but were significantly lower after three days. Plasma FSH levels showed a similar decline, although the changes were not significant. Plasma thyroxine levels did not decrease during starvation, whilst plasma triiodothyronine levels decreased drastically and significantly soon after the start of starvation. All the hormone subunit mRNA contents in starved birds also decreased, with differences from control birds significant 3 days after the start of starvation. Plasma FSH levels showed a strong positive correlation with pituitary FSHbeta mRNA levels, while plasma LH levels had a strong positive correlation with common a mRNA levels and practically no correlation or even a negative correlation with LHbeta mRNA levels. These results suggest that starvation suppresses not only gonadotropin and thyrotropin secretion but also their synthesis in the pituitary gland. Furthermore, these results showed that FSH and LH have different synthesis and secretion dynamics in the Japanese quail. Contradicting results with TSHbeta mRNA and thyroid hormones lead us to assume that starvation affects thyroid hormone metabolism in peripheral tissue, presumably in the liver.  相似文献

Capsule The sexes make significantly different contributions in the tasks of nest-building, incubation and food provisioning to chicks.

Aims To determine the division of parental activities during breeding (nest-building, incubation, brooding, food provisioning and feeding).

Methods Between 1991 and 1998 focal observations were made at nests using 20–60× telescopes. During the incubation period, 11 pairs were studied involving a total of 2812 observation hours over 269 days. During the chick-rearing period, seven pairs were studied involving a total of 5499 observation hours spread over 503 days. The birds were sexed and identified individually on the basis of size, position during copulation, vocalization and plumage differences.

Results Significant differences were found between the sexes in parental behaviour. Males scarcely participated in incubation and contributed significantly more than the females only in food provisioning, both during incubation (food transfers to feed the female) and during chick-rearing (to feed the chicks). Females were responsible for most of the incubation, nest-building (during incubation and chick-rearing), brooding, shading and feeding of chicks. Nest attendance by females decreased over time. In both sexes, food provisioning increased with brood size.

Conclusion Intersexual differences are discussed in the context of the reversed sexual size dimorphism and parental investment strategies. We suggest that in Spanish Imperial Eagles reversed sexual size dimorphism is best explained by the prey capture difficulty hypothesis, than by parental role division during reproduction.  相似文献

Incubation was for a long time considered to be a period of decreased activity and low cost for parents. It was therefore ignored as a potential factor affecting life‐history trade‐offs in birds. Lately this view has started to change, and studies now show that there might be considerable costs connected to incubation. We experimentally reduced the nest temperature during incubation in blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus, thus increasing the energetic cost of incubation, to test the importance of incubation as a component of reproductive costs and for nestling quality. While most other studies use brood size manipulation to manipulate reproductive costs, we were able to separate treatment effects acting during the incubation period from those acting on later reproductive performance by applying a cross‐foster design. We were also able to isolate the effects of decreased incubation temperature on the nestlings from treatment effects acting on incubating females. We found no experimental effect on the length of the incubation period or on hatching success. The lower temperature during incubation, however, caused lower growth rates in nestlings and reduced chick rearing capacity in adults. We conclude that incubation is a costly period, with the potential to affect both the trade‐off between current and future reproduction and the one between parental effort and offspring quality within the current breeding attempt.  相似文献

The seasonal changes in testicular weight in the blue fox were associated with considerable variations in plasma concentrations of LH, prolactin, androstenedione and testosterone and in FSH-binding capacity of the testis. An increase in LH secretion and a 5-fold increase in FSH-binding capacity were observed during December and January, as testis weight increased rapidly. LH levels fell during March when testicular weight was maximal. Plasma androgen concentrations reached their peak values in the second half of March (androstenedione: 0.9 +/- 0.1 ng/ml: testosterone: 3.6 +/- 0.6 ng/ml). A small temporary increase in LH was seen in May and June after the breeding season as testicular weight declined rapidly before levels returned to the basal state (0.5-7 ng/ml) that lasted until December. There were clear seasonal variations in the androgenic response of the testis to LH challenge. Plasma prolactin concentrations (2-3 ng/ml) were basal from August until the end of March when levels rose steadily to reach peak values (up to 13 ng/ml) in May and June just before maximum daylength and temperature. The circannual variations in plasma prolactin after castration were indistinguishable from those in intact animals, but LH concentrations were higher than normal for at least 1 year after castration.  相似文献

In male rats, LH pulse frequency and amplitude increase dramatically by 24 h after gonadectomy; in females they increase only slightly by this time. Mean FSH levels increase significantly in both sexes by 24 h after gonadectomy. The objectives of the present studies were to compare pulsatile LH, FSH, and prolactin (PRL) secretion in intact versus gonadectomized and in male versus female rats, and to determine whether the acute postovariectomy lag in LH rise is due to a lingering effect of the higher PRL and/or progesterone (P) levels seen in intact females. LH pulse amplitude, frequency, and mean levels increased significantly by 24 h after gonadectomy in both sexes, but the increases were greater in the males. FSH mean levels, but not pulse amplitude or frequency, increased similarly in both sexes by 24 h after gonadectomy. PRL did not change with gonadectomy. Treatment with CB-154 (a dopamine agonist), with or without RU486 (a P antagonist), 1 h before gonadectomy significantly suppressed pulsatile PRL secretion 1 day later in both sexes. There was no effect of either treatment on LH secretion. We have demonstrated that there is a sex difference in LH, but not FSH or PRL, pulsatility at 24 h after gonadectomy, and that female rats' higher PRL and P levels do not account for their slow rate of LH rise after ovariectomy.  相似文献

The effects of third ventricular (IVT) injection of 25 μg of bradykinin (BK) upon plasma levels of LH, FSH, TSH, GH and prolactin were investigated in conscious ovariectomized female rats bearing indwelling jugular cannulae. Some animals were pretreated with bradykinin potentiating factor (BPF). Intravenous administration of BK had no effect upon hormone levels. IVT injection of BK significantly depressed plasma prolactin levels at 15 and 30 min post-drug, with levels returning to control values by 60 min. Pretreatment of animals with BPF (75 μg/3 μl) prolonged the prolactin suppression induced by BK for up to two hours. Plasma LH, FSH, TSH and GH levels in BK-rats were not significantly different from those of saline-injected animals at any time point measured. Neither BPF alone nor in conjunction with BK had any effects upon plasma levels of TSH; however, BK plus BPF suppressed FSH concentrations at 75 min post-BPF, while BPF alone appeared to increase GH levels at 45 min. In vitro incubation of hemipituitaries with 0.083, 0.83 or 8.33 μg/ml BK had no effect upon the release of LH, TSH or prolactin compared to control values. However, the secretion of GH and FSH was suppressed by the lowest dose of BK tested. These results suggest that BK may play a physiological inhibitory role in the regulation of prolactin, which can be augmented by preventing its degradation, i.e. via BPF. The effect of the peptide seems to be mediated by the CNS since neither intravenous injection of BK nor in vitro incubation of pituitaries with the peptide modified prolactin release.  相似文献

Male provisioning of incubating females can increase reproductive success by maintaining physiological condition of females and consistency of incubation. The effects of male provisioning on the maintenance of incubation temperature and embryo development should be particularly pronounced in environments where ambient temperature exceeds the tolerance of unincubated eggs and where consistency of female incubation might be particularly important for hatching success. Here, we investigated the reproductive consequences of incubation feeding in a desert population of House Finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) in southwestern Arizona. We found that greater nest attentiveness by females was related to higher minimum incubation nest temperature, that in turn was closely associated with hatching success. Only 44% of males regularly provisioned their incubating females. Although provisioned females maintained higher incubation temperature and took fewer incubation breaks than non-provisioned females, overall, male provisioning did not influence incubation dynamics or hatching success. Further, a male’s incubation feeding rate did not correlate with male provisioning of nestlings. These results corroborate the finding that, in male House Finches, neither provisioning of incubating females nor pre-incubation courtship feeding are associated with increases in circulating pituitary prolactin––the hormone regulating male provisioning of nestlings. We suggest that incubation provisioning by male might be a component of pair maintenance behavior and that variation in male incubation behavior is best understood in relation to asymmetries in residual reproductive values between the mates.  相似文献

Four groups of 10 male starlings were transferred from short daylengths (8 h light/day) to long daylengths (18 h light/day), which caused the tests to develop rapidly to maximum size and then to decrease to minimal size as birds became photorefractory. Birds were surgically thyroidectomized at 8, 16 or 28 weeks. A fourth group was left intact. Testicular volume and plasma FSH and prolactin concentrations were measured. After 42 weeks all birds were castrated and plasma FSH was measured during the next 6 weeks. Testicular growth began in all thyroidectomized birds between 4 and 8 weeks after thyroidectomy. By 42 weeks, the testes of all thyroidectomized birds were large, whereas those of intact birds were still of minimal size. Plasma FSH concentrations remained low in all birds and plasma prolactin values, originally elevated by long daylengths, decreased at a similar rate in thyroidectomized and intact birds. After castration at 42 weeks, plasma FSH values increased rapidly in all thyroidectomized birds but remained low in non-thyroidectomized birds. The results demonstrate that thyroidectomy of photorefractory starlings does not induce immediate testicular growth but may initiate a process which eventually terminates photorefractoriness in a way similar to that caused by return to short daylengths.  相似文献
