Young Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar , brown trout, Salmo trutta , and Arctic char, Salvelinus alpinus , from eight rivers in North and Mid Norway were examined for Gyrodactylus. The fish were collected from 1975 to 1980. A Gyrodactylus salaris type was observed infecting salmon from six of these rivers. No trout or char were infected. A high frequency and intensity of infection of salmon were observed in all but one of the rivers surveyed. In the Saltdalselva, only one specimen of Gyrodactylus infecting one fish was observed. No subsequent mortality of salmon was observed in this river while there were signs of a high mortality of salmon in the other rivers. The salmon parr were more frequently attacked than the fry, the mortality of salmon seemed to have happened in most of the rivers one year after the first observations of Gyrodactylus were made. The mortality of salmon and the high infection rate of Gyrodactylus in these rivers appears unique, and as far as known to the authors there are no other described cases of mortality due to Gyodactylus in Atlantic salmon in natural waters. The reasons for the outbreak of Gyrodactylus in these rivers are not known. Two theories are discussed: one that the fish were weakened by environmental factors and the other that Gyrodactylus was introduced from some of the infected salmon hatcheries in Scandinavia.  相似文献

Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae is a myxozoan parasite of salmonids and freshwater bryozoans, which causes proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in the fish host. To test which fish species are able to transmit T. bryosalmonae to bryozoans, an infection experiment was conducted with 5 PKD-sensitive fish species from different genera. Rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, brown trout Salmo trutta, brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis, grayling Thymallus thymallus and northern pike Esox lucius were cohabitated with T. bryosalmonae-infected Fredericella sultana colonies and then subsequently cohabitated with statoblast-reared parasite free Bryozoa. Statoblasts from infected colonies were tested by PCR to detect cryptic stages of T. bryosalmonae, which may indicate vertical transmission of the parasite. In this study, brown trout and brook trout were able to infect Bryozoa, while there was no evidence that rainbow trout and grayling were able to do so. Few interstitial kidney stages of the parasite were detected by immunohistochemistry in brown trout and brook trout, while rainbow trout and grayling showed marked proliferation of renal interstitial tissue and macrophages with numerous parasite cells. Intraluminal stages in the kidney tubules were only detected in brown trout and rainbow trout. In contrast to previous observations, pike was not susceptible to PKD in these trials according to the results of T. bryosalmonae-specific PCR. No DNA of T. bryosalmonae was detected in any statoblast.  相似文献

Two practical methods are reported for treating feral Baltic salmon with thiamine hydrochloride against M74 syndrome (abnormally high yolk-sac fry mortality of the Baltic salmon). Both bathing of the yolk-sac fry in thiamine hydrochloride (1000 mg l-1, 1 h) and a single intraperitoneal injection given to the female brood fish (100 mg kg-1 fish) during the summer 3 mo before stripping were shown to elevate the whole body total thiamine concentration in the fry. Both treatments were also shown to be effective in preventing mortality due to M74 syndrome. The effect of bathing the yolk-sac fry was shown to be dose-dependent. The results support the view that there is a causal relationship between the thiamine status of the yolk-sac fry and M74 mortality. An intraperitoneal injection of astaxanthine suspension administered to the female brood fish (11 mg kg-1 fish) in the summer 3 mo before stripping elevated the astaxanthine concentration in the eggs but did not affect mortality due to M74 syndrome. An interaction between astaxanthine and thiamine may occur in the developing embryo or yolk-sac fry, however. No association could be demonstrated between the various thiamine hydrochloride treatment practices and hepatic cytochrome P450 dependent 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity in the yolk-sac fry. An injection of thiamine hydrochloride into the peritoneal cavity of wild Baltic salmon females could be used to raise thiamine concentrations in their offspring in the rivers. The effect on smolt production in Finnish Baltic salmon rivers needs to be investigated further, however.  相似文献

Proliferative kidney disease (PKD), caused by the myxozoan parasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae, is well documented as a seasonal disease of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Water temperatures influence the course of the infection both within the fish and the invertebrate host, the recovery of fish from the disease being accelerated with decreasing water temperatures. During this study, groups of rainbow trout were held at a constant temperature (18 degrees C) for a sustained period of time following initial exposure to T. bryosalmonae. While the majority of these fish had recovered from the clinical disease after 9 mo, 10% remained infected, showing clinical signs of disease. A histological study revealed that the majority exhibited very high parasite loads and unusually severe symptoms of PKD. This demonstrates that while most rainbow trout can recover from PKD independent of water temperature, there exists a sub-population that cannot.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Atlantic salmon fry have been annually stocked into Llyn Dwythwch, North Wales, since 1969, in an attempt to increase the natural stocks of the area. The growth and survival of 1- and 2-year-old salmon were investigated, and compared with that of other lake-reared populations and also with salmon in the natural stream environment. Lake-reared salmon follow the same patterns of slow and rapid growth as found for river fish, but the growth rate was superior in the former. The variation in length – weight relationship with age and sex was investigated. Survival rates in general compared favourably with the survival in rivers, with high mortality rates of salmon in Llyn Dwythwch resulting from predation at spring stocking by the resident brown trout. This was later avoided by stocking larger fish in the autumn.  相似文献

Downstream movements of young-of-the-year fish in Catamaran Brook and the Little Southwest Miramichi River, New Brunswick, Canada were monitored by drift sampling during June and July of 1994, 1995 and 1996. Atlantic salmon Salmo salar , white sucker Catostomus commersoni , Cyprinidae, and sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus , were the most commonly captured taxa. All taxa moved downstream almost exclusively at night. Movement was greatest near midnight then declined towards dawn. Drift abundances peaked in mid-June for Atlantic salmon, late June for white sucker, and early July for Cyprinidae. Dates of peak movement were earlier in the Little Southwest Miramichi River than in Catamaran Brook for all taxa. Salmon fry captured in drift samplers were shorter than salmon fry captured by electrofishing near the sampling sites. Salmon fry captured in Catamaran Brook drift samplers were heavier at length than those captured in Little Southwest Miramichi River drift samplers. Results suggest that Catamaran Brook provides relatively better habitat for Atlantic salmon fry growth and relatively poorer habitat for larval white sucker growth than the Little Southwest Miramichi River.  相似文献

Heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI) is a disease that affects farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. several months after the fish have been transferred to seawater. Recently, a new virus called piscine reovirus (PRV) was identified in Atlantic salmon from an outbreak of HSMI and in experimentally challenged fish. PRV is associated with the development of HSMI, and has until now only been detected in Atlantic salmon. This study investigates whether the virus is also present in wild fish populations that may serve as vectors for the virus. The virus was found in few of the analyzed samples so there is probably a more complex relationship that involves several carriers and virus -reservoirs.  相似文献

Survival rate and growth parameters of Atlantic salmon fry and sea trout fry were determined after stocking in the wild. Before release (22 May 2009) into the wild the larvae were reared for 10 weeks in the hatchery in three groups: (i) fry fed on live zooplankton , (ii) fry fed on larvae of live nekton, and (iii) fry fed on prepared pellet food. In autumn (15 September 2010) the fish were caught in the wild; the survival rate and growth parameters of both Atlantic salmon and sea trout were the highest in the zooplankton‐fed group, whilst the pellet‐fed group had the lowest survival rate and growth value parameters. Most effective food for hatchery‐reared fishes to be used as stock was the natural living zooplankton. The general conclusion is that the live diet supplied in the rearing period has a positively impact on fish survival in the wild.  相似文献

The strategy of releasing captive reared adult Atlantic salmon Salmo salar into the Magaguadavic River, New Brunswick, Canada, to spawn, was not an effective tool for rebuilding a seriously depressed wild population. The fish were first generation progeny from wild parents, and had spent their entire lives in captivity in either sea or fresh water. No differences in movement or behaviour patterns were observed between freshwater and seawater reared groups. Fish released in the lower river early (35 to 80 days prior to the natural spawning period) moved into a lake low in the system, and most stayed there near the commercial hatchery where they had been reared from egg to smolt. During the spawning season, none moved to the upper river reaches where most spawning habitat exists. Most broodstock released in the upper river reaches near the time of spawning stayed there during the spawning period. The following year few to no Atlantic salmon fry were found, and most appeared not to be offspring of released adults.  相似文献

An enhancement programme based on stocking 0+ year age‐class Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, conducted in the River Bush, Northern Ireland, U.K. over the period 1996–2005, was reviewed with reference to the performance and biological characteristics of wild fish. Wild ova to 0+ year fry (summer) survival was c. 8% with subsequent wild 0+ year fry‐to‐smolt survival c. 9%. Stocked unfed 0+ year juveniles gave c. 1% survival to smolt whilst fed 0+ year S. salar stocked in late summer exhibited survival at c. 5%. Stocking with unfed and fed fry contributed to increased smolt production and helped attain local management objectives between 2001 and 2005. Significant differences in biological characteristics were observed between wild and stocked‐origin fish. Wild‐smolt cohorts were dominated by 2+ year age‐class fish on the River Bush whilst smolts originating from fed fry mostly comprised younger 1+ year individuals. The mean mass of 1+ year smolts derived from stocked fed fry was significantly lower than that of wild 1+ year smolts, although these differences were not evident between older age classes. Differences in run timing between wild smolts and smolts derived from stocked fry were also apparent with the stocked‐origin fish tending to run earlier than wild fish. Although the stocking exercise was useful in terms of maximizing freshwater production, concerns over the quality of stocked‐origin recruits and the long term consequences for productivity are highlighted.  相似文献

The river Ingdalselva, which drains to the Trondheims fjord, has no local salmon population due to an impassable waterfall 500 m upstream from the outlet. In the period 1994–97, a total of 31 mature Atlantic salmon (19 females and 12 males) from the rivers Orkla (1994–96) and Vigda (1997) were radio-tagged and released in the river Ingdalselva before spawning. The main goal of the project was to find out whether the fish would stay and spawn in the river, and if the observations during the spawning period could be used to indicate where spawning had taken place. Some fish left the river shortly after release, but 77% of the fish stayed in the river during the spawning period in October. Most of the females (74%) spawned in the river, including multi-sea winter salmon of approximately 10 kg. Some fish remained at the site of the release, while others migrated downstream to hiding places where they stayed until spawning. Long distance upstream migrations were not observed. The observations of the fish during the spawning period were used to identify spawning areas. Electrofishing for salmon fry in the spawning areas the following year in all cases produced fry, and in two of the years salmon fry were also found in areas where no spawning activity had been registered. Radio-tracking was an efficient method for determining whether transplanted salmon would remain in a `new'n river during the spawning season and for locating spawning areas, particularly when the fish were tracked daily.  相似文献

Proliferative kidney disease (PKD) is a hyperplastic condition of the lymphoid tissue of salmonids infected with the spores of Tetracapsula bryosalmonae, a myxozoan parasite formerly designated PKX, which has recently been described as a parasite of several species of bryozoans. The occurrence of PKD is generally associated with seasonal increase in water temperature, with research indicating that transmission of the disease does not occur below 12 to 13 degrees C. This suggested that the infectious stages are absent from about November to March/April. Here we document the transmission of PKD at water temperatures and seasons previously considered to be non permissive for PKD infection. The exposure of naive rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) to PKD-infected water ranging from 8 to 13 degrees C during the Autumn, Winter and early Spring, resulted in the infection of kidney interstitium once the trout were transferred to 16 degrees C. In addition, cohabitation studies were conducted with the bryozoan host Fredericella sultana collected from a river at times of low seasonal temperatures because this bryozoan species overwinters as living colonies. Cohabitation of trout with colonies of F sultana in parasite-free city water at 16 degrees C, also led to renal lymphoid tissue infection with the parasite and even to nephromegaly. Our results provide evidence that the infectious stages of T bryosalmonae for rainbow trout were present in the water throughout the entire year and that the impact of temperature on the development of PKD is primarily a result of the kinetics of Tetracapsula multiplication in bryozoan and fish hosts.  相似文献

This study quantified the use of cool water sources by wild 0+, 1+ and 2+ year Atlantic salmon Salmo salar during high water temperatures ( i.e. >23° C) in summer 1995 and 2004. During these events, 0+ year Atlantic salmon did not aggregate or increase in abundance in cool water sites. Interestingly, 1+ and 2+ year Atlantic salmon numbers increased in cool water sites. In addition, these older juveniles formed numerous, discrete aggregations along the plume created by a tributary with aggregation locations being similar between years. Aged 2+ year fish aggregations were at the coolest sources whereas 1+ year aggregations were in locations cooler than the main river. Fish in aggregations on average used deeper sections (average depth: 380 mm) compared with the coolest available habitat in the thermal plume (average depth: 230 mm). Hence, during high temperature events, older juvenile Atlantic salmon moved to cooler water sites and then aggregated in deeper microhabitats.  相似文献

A synthesis of results from two projects was assessed to analyse possible influence of sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis on marine Atlantic salmon Salmo salar survival. During the years 1992–2004, trawling for wild migrating post-smolts was performed in Trondheimsfjord, a fjord in which no Atlantic salmon aquaculture activity is permitted. Prevalence and intensity of sea lice infections on migrating wild post-smolts differed between years. A correlation analysis between 1 sea-winter (SW) Atlantic salmon catch statistics from the River Orkla (a Trondheimsfjord river) and sea lice infections on the migrating smolts in the Trondheimsfjord was not significant. Up to 2% reduction in adult returns due to sea-lice infection was expected. In addition, experimental releases from 1996 to 1998 with individually tagged groups of hatchery-reared Atlantic salmon smolts given protection against sea-lice infection was performed. Higher recaptures of adult Atlantic salmon from 1998 treated smolts compared to the control group may correspond to high abundance of sea lice found on the wild smolt, and may indicate influence on post-smolt mortality. These studies indicate that post-smolt mortality in Trondheimsfjord is marginally influenced by sea lice infection; however, the methods for assessing wild smolt mortality might be insufficient. Higher infections of sea lice farther out in the fjord may indicate more loss in Atlantic salmon returns in some years.  相似文献

Gyrodacrylus salaris was most probably introduced to the River Lakselva in 1975 through stocking of Atlantic salmon from an infected hatchery. The parasite population grew rapidly, and the parasite spread throughout the entire watercourse during the summer of 1976. This epidemic situation led to mortality among the young Atlantic salmon, and the density of salmon parr was heavily reduced from 1976 to 1977. The density of salmon parr has remained close to zero since then, while there are no apparent trends toward decrease or increase in the density of brown trout. In spite of the reduced density of young salmon, a new epidemic has developed each year among the few young 0+ and 1+ Atlantic salmon present in the river. Results from successive sampling during the summer of 1987, 1988 and 1989 indicate that most of the presmolt salmon are attacked during their first summer or autumn of life. The infection develops into an epidemic during the first autumn, winter or the next summer. The build-up of the parasite burden on the fish leads in turn to mortality. Norwegian Atlantic salmon probably have no resistance against G. salaris, since the parasite has recently been introduced to Norwegian rivers.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon straying from the River Imsa   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4
Mean estimated straying rate for Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. leaving the River Imsa as smolts during 1976–1999 was 15% for hatchery fish and 6% for wild conspecifics. Hatchery Atlantic salmon selected for production traits during four or more generations strayed >50%. The straying rate was higher for Atlantic salmon staying 2 rather than 1 year at sea before attaining maturity. For spawning, 96% of the strays entered streams within 420 km from the River Imsa, and c . 80% entered streams within 60 km of the mouth of the River Imsa, whether the fish were wild or hatchery released. Within the 60 km zone, the number of strays caught in a river increased with the Atlantic salmon catch in that river, but there was no significant relationship between straying rate and water discharge or distance from the river to the River Imsa. The observed straying rate of hatchery Atlantic salmon decreased with increasing number of fish entering the River Imsa. Sexual maturation as parr did not influence the tendency to stray. The results suggest that the establishment of temporary zones, free of fish farms, outside important Atlantic salmon rivers by the fisheries authorities in Norway should be large, whole fjords, to be effective.  相似文献

Proliferative kidney disease (PKD), caused by the malacosporean parasite, Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae, is a major disease of salmonid culture both in western Europe and North America. The fish are infected from spores that develop within freshwater bryozoans and are released into the water column. Although sporogenesis has been studied in the bryozoan host and occurs within sacs, the formation of these sacs from presaccular stages has only been hypothesized. Examination of infected bryozoans by using a range of techniques identified proliferating, presaccular amoeboid stages of T. bryosalmonae on the body wall of the bryozoan Fredericella sultana. These stages possessed unique electron-dense bodies and were observed as aggregating within the bryozoan metacoel, differentiating to form spore sacs. Spore sac growth was associated with the assimilation of the presaccular parasites rather than through cryptomitosis of sac mural cells. This sac formation through aggregation and assimilation suggests an intriguing mechanism by which T. bryosalmonae can cross-fertilize.  相似文献

In March 2012, fishermen operating in a fjord in Northern Norway reported catching Atlantic cod, a native fish forming an economically important marine fishery in this region, with unusual prey in their stomachs. It was speculated that these could be Atlantic salmon, which is not typical prey for cod at this time of the year in the coastal zone. These observations were therefore reported to the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries as a suspected interaction between a local fish farm and this commercial fishery. Statistical analyses of genetic data from 17 microsatellite markers genotyped on 36 partially-degraded prey, samples of salmon from a local fish farm, and samples from the nearest wild population permitted the following conclusions: 1. The prey were Atlantic salmon, 2. These salmon did not originate from the local wild population, and 3. The local farm was the most probable source of these prey. Additional tests demonstrated that 21 of the 36 prey were infected with piscine reovirus. While the potential link between piscine reovirus and the disease heart and skeletal muscle inflammation is still under scientific debate, this disease had caused mortality of large numbers of salmon in the farm in the month prior to the fishermen''s observations. These analyses provide new insights into interactions between domesticated and wild fish.  相似文献
