Summary The normal skin of the pleuronectid fish, Hippoglossoides elassodon, is described by light and electron microscopy. The epidermis consists of 5 to 9 layers of cells, the majority of which are squamous cells and the minority mucous cells. The squamous cells are characterized by numerous desmosomes and associated cytoplasmic filaments. The mucous cells accumulate mucous droplets in vacuoles of Golgi origin and are observed apparently in the process of releasing their content at the free surface. The dermis consists of alternating lamellae composed of typical collagen fibers. Pigment cells are of three types: melanophores, iridophores (guanophores), and lipophores. This work was supported by Public Health Service Research Grant CA-08158 from the National Cancer Institute.  相似文献

The livers of six flatfish species from Sivuch'ya Bight were examined histologically for the presence of neoplastic lesions. Out of 120 fish studied, hepatic tumors were found in two individuals: the black plaice Pleuronectes obscurusand the longsnout flounderPleuronectes punctatissimus.Based on presence of tissue and cellular atypism, tumor pearls surrounded by squamous cells, and absence of mucous secretion, the neoplasm in P. punctatissimuswas classified as squamous cell carcinoma. Abnormal growth of fibrous stroma suggests a scirrhous variant of carcinoma. Tumor in P. obscuruswas classified as a hepatocellular adenoma. This is the first information on liver tumors in flatfishes of Sivuch'ya Bight.  相似文献

Summary An ultrastructural study of the mucous cells of the intestinal epithelium of four lacertilian species (Lacerta lepida, Lacerta hispanica, Psammodromus algirus and Acanthodactylus erythrurus) is here reported. Two types of mucous cells have been found in these species: common mucous cells and granular mucous cells. Immature and mature forms of both types have been observed. The common mucous cells or typical goblet cells have the same characteristics in all four species. The granules of the granular mucous cells of the two species of Lacerta are similar but differ from those of the other two species.  相似文献

The digestive tract of the tortoise Testudo graeca (Testudines) was investigated by means of light and electron microscopy. The esophagus of T. graeca was lined by two types of epithelium: non-keratinized stratified squamous in the upper portion and stratified columnar in the lower. The lamina propria of the esophagus contained tubular or tubuloacinar glands. The mucosa of the stomach showed similar characteristics to those of other reptiles. The small intestine exhibited longitudinal folds lined by absorptive and goblet cells. The large intestine was lined by columnar mucous cells. Within the lamina propria of the large intestine, masses of 10–15 epithelial cells connecting with the surface epithelium by means of slender cytoplasmic processes were observed. A battery of six lectins (Con-A, PNA, WGA, DBA, SBA, and LTA) was used to identify the epithelial mucins. WGA and DBA reacted with all types of mucous cells throughout the alimentary canal. PNA was only unreactive in the intestine, LTA in the esophagus, and SBA in the large intestine. These results indicate a similar lectin-binding pattern throughout the gut of T. graeca.  相似文献

A comparative study has been made of the mucogenic epidermis of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio var. communis, and the three Indian major carps, Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhina mrigala: on the basis of epidermis structural organization, these species are easily differentiated. The epithelial cells in the superficial layer, as in most fishes, show secretory activity, evidenced by positive histochemical reactions, which is high in C. carpio var. communis, moderate in C. catla and low in L. rohita and C. mrigala. The epithelial cells in the underlying two or three layers also give positive reactions, though their intensity is relatively weak. The mucous cells in C. carpio var. communis are distributed in large numbers arranged in several superimposed layers in the outer regions of the epidermis, whereas in C. catla they are fewer in number and are widely separated in the surface layers as well as in the deeper layers of the epidermis; in both species the mucous cells appear rounded, large, and open on the surface by wide pores. In contrast, in L. rohita and C. mrigala the mucous cells are smaller, restricted mainly to the superficial layer, close together in a single row, and open on the surface by narrow pores. The overall density of mucous cells in L. rohita and C. mrigala, as in C. catla, is much lower than in C. carpio var. communis. In the epidermis of C. carpio var. communis there are a large number of mucous cells, and the few club cells are restricted to the deeper layers. In contrast, in the epidermis of the three Indian major carp the overall density of the mucous cells is much lower and the club cells are very numerous. It is suggested that the high density of club cells compensates an overall low density of mucous cells as an adaptation for an effective defence mechanism. Increased mucus production in the epidermis of C. carpio var. communis, as evidenced by a large number of mucous cells in outer regions and high secretory activity of superficial layer epithelial cells, is associated with increased precipitation of mud held in suspension, needed as an adaptation to the species’peculiar bottom-scooping habits. The varied density of the taste buds in the epidermis of the four carp is associated with their feeding habits.  相似文献

Amazona aestiva Linnaeus, 1758 is known as the blue-fronted parrot. These animals are considered seed dispersion, contributing to ecological balance. Despite its ecological importance, A. aestiva is listed as an imminent danger of becoming extinct, as it is one of the most illegally traded native species in Brazil, besides losing its habitat due to deforestation and forest fires. The cranial oesophagus mucosa is lined with a non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, and the basal layer presents melanocyte accumulation. No mucous glands were observed in the lamina propria/submucosa. The ingluvium two different muscular layer patterns were observed, one internal and circular and one very thick, external and longitudinal. The proventriculum submucosa consists of polygonal proventricular glands and contents into a broad central duct lined with simple columnar epithelium Periodic acid-reactive Schiff positive (PAS+) and Alcian blue positive (AB+). The 5-HT cells are dispersed in the proventricular glands located at base and apex. The ventricle mucous layer contains numerous branched folds lined by a simple columnar epithelium. The epithelium was negative reaction for PAS and positive for AB only on the fold surfaces. The 5-HT cells were scarce and observed only at the base of the ventricular gland, as well as in the adjacent connective tissue.  相似文献

Summary The vestibulum is very short and lined by stratified squamous epithelium which contains many alveolar cells. The cavum nasi proprium is exceedingly complex, with three conchal formations and a series of six recesses and sinuses. Olfactory epithelium lines the whole dorsal or dorso-medial half of the cavum, but not the deep sinuses. Non sensory respiratory epithelium lines the ventral or ventro-lateral half of the cavum, all the caviconchal recess, the posterolateral recess, the postturbinal sinus, the postconchal cavity, and the nasopharyngeal duct. In olfactory epithelium the proportion of sensory cells is about 61 % inCrocodylus and 59 % inCaiman; the ratio of sensory cells to supporting cells is about 2.6/1 in the former and 1.8/1 in the latter. Bowman's glands are sero-mucous and normally developed. As in other reptiles, the respiratory epithelium is composed with mucous and ciliated cells; but, in ventrolateral part of the cavum, there are also sero-mucous cells forming small multicellular glands. The hypertrophied lachrymal duct constitutes a very large naso-lachrymal not previously described gland. The lumen is lined by mucous and ciliated cells, the collet of each branched tubular gland by mucous cells and the glandular tubes by sero-mucous cells. Adult crocodilians lack a Jacobson's organ and there are no vomeronasal sensory epithelium in the cavum. In reptiles, aquatic way of life generally involves regression in olfactory epithelium, while Jacobson's organ (or, in Testudines, vomeronasal epithelium) persists and occasionally increases. In crocodilians, things are exactly reverse. After comparing with other Tetrapods, it seems likely that Jacobson's organ has been lost by terrestrial ancestor of crocodilians and birds. Now, only crocodilians posses olfactory epithelium, and naso-lachrymal gland gives them a supplementary protection, necessary in semiaquatic environment.  相似文献

Summary Cellular differentiation and migration in the fundic glands of adult and larval Xenopus laevis have been examined using bromodeoxyuridine-immunohistochemistry. In the adult fundic gland, cumulative labeling with bromodeoxyuridine revealed a proliferative cell zone between the surface mucous cells and mucous neck cells, in what is referred to as the neck portion of the gland. The labeling-index of mucous neck cells had rapidly increased by week-5. The labeling-index of oxynticopeptic cells showed a more delayed increase until week-7, coincident with the decrease in the labeling of mucous neck cells. In the immature fundic glands of larvae, the labeled proliferating cells were randomly distributed throughout the developing gastric mucosa. During metamorphosis, the labeling-index of immature epithelial cells was highest at stage 63. Following administration of bromodeoxyurdine at this, stage, there was no significant loss of labeled epithelial cells during the metamorphosing period. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the labeling-indices among the epithelial cells, such as surface mucous cells/generative cells, mucous neck cells, and oxynticopeptic cells, 7 days after administration. Cellular differentiation and migration pathways of epithelial cells in the fundic gland of adult X. laevis and its larvae are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The mucous cells of the rat stomach were stained with lectins by two post-embedding staining methods for electron microscopy. The mucous granules of surface mucous cells and foveolar mucous cells were stained weakly by Ricinus communis agglutinin-ferritin and wheat germ agglutinin-ferritin. The mucous granules of mucous neck cells were stained by concanavalin A-ferritin, Ricinus communis agglutinin-ferritin and wheat germ agglutinin-ferritin. The mucous granules of pyloric gland cells showed an affinity for wheat germ agglutinin-ferritin and concanavalin A-ferritin, while Ricinuscommunis agglutinin-ferritin only slightly stained the granules. The granules of mucous neck cells and pyloric gland cells were also stained by the concanavalin A-horseradish peroxidase-colloidal gold method, but the granules of surface and foveolar mucous cells were not stained by this method. Periodic acid oxidation of the sections before the standard concanavalin A-ferritin procedure enhanced the staining of the granules of mucous neck cells and pyloric gland cells slightly. Reduction of the sections after the periodic acid oxidation weakened the staining. Similar results were obtained using the concanavalin A-horseradish peroxidase-colloidal gold method. Though the staining with Ricinus communis agglutinin-ferritin was inhibited by periodic acid oxidation of the sections before staining, the staining with wheat germ agglutinin-ferritin was not inhibited by the oxidation. It is suggested that the paradoxical staining is closely related to the position of the concanavalin A-binding sugar residues in the carbohydrate chains. This work was supported in part by a grant-in-aid (No. 457008) from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, Japan and a grant-in-aid for cancer research (55-21) from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Japan  相似文献

Summary Epidermal cells of normal fin web and of the epidermal papilloma of the flathead sole, Hippoglossoides elassodon, were compared by light and electron microscopy. The predominant cells of normal epidermis are squamous and are characterized by complex microvillous interdigitations between adjacent cells, numerous desmosome-like structures, terminal bars, prominent cytoplasmic filaments, and blunt, broad-based microvilli on the outer (free) surfaces of the superficial cells. The less numerous mucous cells of normal epidermis possess abundant ergastoplasm and mucus-filled vacuoles, but lack desmosome-like structures and cytoplasmic filaments. In contrast, in the epidermal papilloma, mucous cells are absent; and the tumor cells are without microvilli, desmosome-like structures, cytoplasmic filaments, and conspicuous ergastoplasm. The papilloma cells are in addition characterized by certain features not seen in normal epidermis, including prominent nuclear pores, very large nucleoli, nuclear dense bodies, vesicular mitochondria with few cristae and dense internal granules, and three types of distinctive cytoplasmic particles of possible viral nature. This investigation was supported by Public Health Service research grant CA 08158 from the National Cancer Institute, and American Cancer Society Institutional Grant No. IN-53 E.We are indebted to Miss Mary Bens for her indispensable technical assistance.  相似文献

Summary In larvae of Rana temporaria and Bufo bufo the location of filter apparatus within the larval organization, the arrangement of the morphological parts as branchial food trap, ventral velum, and filter rows, as well as their surface anatomy, are similar to that of other species of Orton's larval type IV. The means by which mucous with its entrapped food particles is transported from the filter rows to the esophagus is finally resolved. The dorsally positioned ciliary cushion extends far ventrally between the filter plates. From their contact with the filter rows, the cilia transport the mucous to Kratochwill's caudally positioned Flimmerrinne and from there to the esophagus. The original chordate principle of mucous entrapment and ciliary transport is thus retained by these anuran larvae. The only modification specific to the latter is the division into a ventral filter apparatus, whose epithelia serve for mucus entrapment, and a dorsal ciliary area.Six different types of cell may be distinguished ultrastructurally: (1) The ubiquitous squamous epithelium with merocrine extrusions; (2) the large supporting cells of the filter rows and of the ventral velum; (3) the ciliary cells of the ciliary cushion; (4) three different types of mucous producing secretory cells: (a) A type of cell similar to the goblet cell is found in the ciliary cushion (merocrine extrusion); (b) The secretory pits of the ventral velum and the secretory ridges have similar bottle-shaped merocrine secretory cells; (c) The merocrine apical cells of the filter rows are the final kind. It is evident that the ciliary cushion epithelium resembles that of both the manicotto glandulare of anuran larvae and the trachea and bronchus of Mammalia.Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft-DFG  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of the mucous and endocrine cells of the gastric mucosa of the cane toad (Bufo marinus) has been examined. Surface mucous cells line the entire gastric mucosa and pits. Many of their secretory granules contain an electron-dense core that remains unreactive after cytochemical testing for glycoproteins. A second spatially and structurally discrete population of mucous cells is present in the gastric glands. These glandular mucous cells are probably homologous with the antral gland and mucous neck cells of mammals; their secretory granules also contain non-glycoprotein cores. Three distinct populations of endocrine cells show structural homologies with gastric hormone-storing cells of higher vertebrates. This study was supported by grants from N.H. & M.R.C. Summary The glycoconjugates of the human fundic mucosa were characterized at the ultrastructural level by means of direct (Helix pomatia agglutinin-gold complex) and indirect lectin techniques (Concanavalin A and horseradish peroxidase-gold complex; wheat germ agglutinin and ovomucoid-gold complex). Surface mucous cells and mucous neck cells secreted O-glycoproteins with N-acetylgalactosamine and N-acetylglucosamine residues at the non reducing terminus of the saccharidic chain. The secretory granules of the mucous neck cells showed condensed areas slightly reactive to ConA. The results obtained in the chief cells suggest that these cells secrete N-glycoproteins rich in mannose and/or glucose residues. Transitional cells, presenting both morphological characteristics and lectin binding pattern intermediate to the mucous neck and chief cells have been observed. The surface of the intracellular canaliculi of the parietal cell was labelled by HPA, WGA and ConA. In the neck region of the gastric glands, immature parietal cells containing abundant mucous granules reactive to HPA, WGA and ConA were observed. The present results further corroborate the existence of a common cell precursor for surface mucous, mucous neck and parietal cells. In a further step, mucous neck cells gradually differentiate into chief cells the transitional cells being an intermediate stage.  相似文献

It has been described the cytology of the following parts of the respiratory system of some South American primates:Callithrix jacchus andCallithrix argentata melanura. The nasal cavities are divided into three parts: a vestibule, covered with a stratified nonkeratinized squamous epithelium; the respiratory portion, consisting of a pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium with goblet cells and the olfactory portion which is also covered with a high respiratory epithelium without goblet cells. The trachea is lined with a mucous membrane, whose epithelium is pseudostratified columnar ciliated with scarce goblet cells in the proximal portion unlike to the distal one. In the dorsal portion of the trachea, at the level of the gap between the two ends of incomplete cartilaginous rings, the epithelial lining is of transitional type. The incomplete hyaline cartilaginous rings present centers of calcification. The right and left lungs consist of two and three lobes respectively characteristic for these species, but they are not divided into lobules by connective tissue as in other ones. The bronchi, bronchioles and the respiratory portion, respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs, and alveoli present the typical respiratory structure with exception of their cartilaginous configuration; the cartilage continues as far as the respiratory bronchioles and alveolar ducts. These last structures are formed by a thin squamous epithelium, in which we observed two types of alveolar lining cells. The respiratory organs of Amphipnous cuchia comprise a pair of aicsacs, vestigial gill filaments borne on second gill arch and vascular folds of the third gill arch. The volume of each air-sac, its surface area and its reltionship with the body weight of the fish have been determined. The air-sac is lined by a respiratory mucosa which is composed of vascular and non-vascular areas. Each vascular area, called here the ‘respiratory islet,’ studded with hundreds of vascular rosettes, which are formed of collagenous material and supported by endothelial cells. Pilaster cells are absent. The ‘islets’ are covered over by a single layer of squamous type of epithelial cells. The non-vascular areas (lanes') are the stratified part of the respiratory epithelium and contain a large number of mucous glands which secrete mainly acid mucopolysaccharides. The vascularisation of the gills have been studied by India ink injection methods. The secondary gill lamellae are absent, their place being taken up by coiled vascular loops. A quantitative estimation of haemoglobin in blood of ‘cuchia’ and other air- and water-breathing fishes have been made by colorimetric method and the results have been discussed in relation to their habit and habitats. The cranial muscles which are involved in respiration of ‘cuchia’ and the mechanics of muscle action in breathing have been described.  相似文献

In squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) the position of submandibular glands in the neck, on either side of the trachea, more closely resembles that of rodents than that of other primates. The glands exhibit seromucous acini and mucous tubules with seromucous demilunes. Electron microscopy shows basal cytoplasmic folds and well-developed intercellular tissue spaces and canaliculi only in relation to seromucous cells. Greatly dilated cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum and prominent Golgi membranes are characteristic of the mucous cells. The secretory granules of seromucous and mucous cells are morphologically distinct and indicate chemically different products for the two cell types. Histochemically, the seromucous cell shows the presence of acid mucosubstance as indicated by the PAS and Alcian blue techniques. Preliminary studies showed no appreciable quantity of amylase in submandibular glands. The intercalated duct cell is juxtaposed with the acinar cell or mucous tubule cell. Short luminal microvilli, prominent Golgi complexes and scant apical granules are notable features of intercalated duct cells. Four cell types compose the striated ducts, viz., granular light cells, agranular dark cells, vesiculated dark cells, and basal cells. Peripheral nerves are found in five different locations: in the connective tissue (interstitial), between adjacent myoepithelial and mucous-secreting cells, in the intercellular space between adjacent secretory cells, and between basal plications of striated ducts and between adjacent myoepithelial and intercalated duct cells.  相似文献

Abstract. Objective: It is not known whether or not epithelial progenitors of the pyloric antrum are involved in gastric carcinogenesis. Normally, these progenitors give rise to two main cell lineages: pit and gland mucous cells. This study was designed to examine the changes that occur in pyloric antral mucous cell lineages and their progenitors during development of gastric adenoma and carcinoma in trefoil factor 1 (TFF1) knockout mice. Materials and methods: Pyloric antral mucosal tissues of TFF1 knockout mice at ages from 3 days to 17 months were processed for histochemical analysis using Ulex europaeus and Grifforia simplifolica lectins as markers for pit and gland mucous cells, respectively. The dividing epithelial progenitors were identified by using immunohistochemical and electron microscopy techniques. Results: TFF1 loss was associated with amplification of both mucus‐secreting pit and gland cells. Both lectins examined bound not only to mature mucous cells, but also to most of epithelial progenitors which gradually amplified with age and frequently were seen in mitosis. Analysis of 12‐ to 17‐month‐old TFF1‐deficient stomachs revealed occasional groups of poorly differentiated mucosal cells with features similar to those of epithelial progenitors (or stem cells), in the basal portion of the antral mucosa. These cells eventually invaded the muscularis mucosa while maintaining some capacity to differentiate. Conclusion: This study shows that the progenitors of pit and gland mucous cells contribute to gastric carcinogenesis in the pyloric antrum of TFF1 knockout mice, strongly supporting the concept of stem cell origin of cancer.  相似文献

Glycoproteins (GPs) were visualised histochemically in the secretory cells – the mucous goblet cells (the type A and the type B), the serous goblet cells, the club cells and the epithelial cells in the gill epithelium of Rita rita. The type A mucous goblet cells, the type B mucous goblet cells and the epithelial cells elaborate GPs with oxidizable vicinal diols and GPs with sialic acid residue without O-acyl substitution. In addition, GPs with O-sulphate esters are elaborated by the type A and GPs with O-acyl sugars by the type B mucous goblet cells. GPs are absent in the serous goblet cells and are with oxidizable vicinal diols in low moieties in the club cells. The analysis of the results elucidates interesting differences in the composition and concentration of GPs in the mucus elaborated by the epithelium of the gill arches and the gill rakers; and the gill filaments and the secondary lamellae indicating the potential importance of the glycoproteins at these locations. GPs elaborated on the surfaces of the gill arches and the gill rakers could be associated to assist in feeding activities and on the surfaces of the gill filaments and the secondary lamellae in the respiratory activity.  相似文献
